Global Warming a Religion, Say Climate Scientists

According to many scientists, Global Warming has become the religion of "Climatism" -- with a global congregation led by a clergy of institutional science.  However, "the cracks in the scientific claims for catastrophic warming are…becoming much harder for the supporters to defend."
"Global climate alarmism has been costly to society, and it has the potential to be vastly more costly. It has also been damaging to science, as scientists adjust both data and even theory to accommodate politically correct positions."
-- Dr. Richard Lindzen of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

Richard Lindzen is a climate change skeptic with a novel theory. The MIT meteorologist concedes that greenhouse gases cause warming, but he believes Earth will be able to regulate its temperature, like a thermostat, thanks to clouds. Lindzen argues that when surface temperature increases, the moist air that rises from the tropics will rain out more of its moisture, leaving less to form the wispy, high clouds known as cirrus. Just like greenhouse gases, those cirrus clouds trap heat in the atmosphere, so a decrease in them would counteract the increase of greenhouse gases. From "Climate Science Exploited for Political Agenda, According to Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons" by Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS), posted at The Sacramento Bee 8/28/13

Climatism or global warming alarmism is the most prominent recent example of science being coopted to serve a political agenda, writes Richard Lindzen of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the in the fall 2013 issue of the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons. He compares it to past examples: Lysenkoism in the Soviet Union, and the eugenics movement.

. . . he writes, "A profound dumbing down of the discussion…interacts with the ascendancy of incompetents." Prizes and accolades are awarded for politically correct statements, even if they defy logic. "Unfortunately, this also often induces better scientists to join the pack in order to preserve their status," Lindzen adds.

In normal science, models are judged by how well they agree with nature, Lindzen explains. In the climate "debate," however, the models are given a claim to validity independent of agreement with real observations.

Tennessee College OKs Homosexual Indoctrination

Columbia State Community College officials have concluded that psychology professor Dr. Linda Brunton was right to require students to participate in a "gay pride" assignment.  Christian students, referred to by Brunton as “uneducated bigots,” complained that she infringed on their constitutionally-guaranteed right of conscience.
"I don't really see why it would be much of a problem if it's an assignment, I mean people should be more open-minded, we're in college, anyway."

The investigation was conducted by Randy Elston, director of the Columbia State Human Resources Department, whose findings were submitted to the college in a document dated Aug. 26.

[Elston's conclusions include:]

* The issue of homosexuality is part of the course content and appears in several textbook chapters. Brunton’s comments in class could have been tempered with “more sensitivity,” he added, but were within the bounds of academic freedom.

* While many students in all three classes were uncomfortable with the assignment for religious reasons, “I also believe that (Brunton) in some cases did not consider those beliefs and the impact on students when she was dealing with this subject matter.”

* Only four of the 43 students who participated in the assignment received a grade of zero. Two of them “who allegedly received a zero because of their religious beliefs” turned in an optional assignment that they knew was not written according to instructions.

A Tennessee community college professor ordered her students to wear ribbons supporting gay rights and said those who believed in the traditional definition of marriage are just “uneducated bigots” who “attack homosexuals with hate,” according to a legal firm representing several of the students in the class.

Students in a general psychology class at Columbia State Community College were directed by their professor to wear “Rainbow Coalition” ribbons for an entire day and express their support for the homosexual community, said Travis Barham, an attorney with the Alliance Defending Freedom.

According to her faculty page, Brunton is a member of the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Educators Network and lists diversity issues among her professional interests.

The students were also barred from defending or explaining any other views regarding homosexual conduct, dismissing such arguments as “throwing Bible verses” at her,” the attorney said.

From "Tenn. Professor Requires Students to Support Gay Rights, Calls View of Those Opposed to Assignment 'Ignorant'" by Alex Murashko, Christian Post Reporter, 6/19/13

When several students objected to being forced to support conduct that violates their faith convictions, Brunton brushed aside their concerns, described their views as "ignorant and uneducated," and explained that she hoped this assignment would cause them to change their beliefs, ADF stated. Regardless of their convictions, students had to express the views in a paper about the assignment she mandated in order to receive class credit.

The ADF letter explains that "for at least seven decades, the Supreme Court has consistently ruled that the government may not compel a citizen to say what he does not want to say." The letter points out that the Supreme Court has specifically ruled that "the First Amendment protects the right of individuals…to refuse to foster…an idea they find morally objectionable."

"College officials must respect their students' constitutional freedoms, including freedom of speech and freedom of religion," added Senior Counsel Kevin Theriot. "Compelling students to utter government-approved ideas is not education, but an abuse of power. We hope Columbia State acknowledges this and ensures that its professors stop forcing any students to endorse views with which they disagree in order to receive a passing grade."

Abortions by Non-physicians per Calif. Legislation

As fewer doctors want to be abortionists, a crisis looms in California -- a land packed with liberals who typically kill more babies than they birth.  The state legislature overwhelmingly passed bills to allow nurses, and others who fall short of being actual medical doctors, as abortionists.

Gov. Jerry Brown soon will decide whether to sign AB154 by Assemblywoman Toni Atkins, D-San Diego, which would let nurse practitioners, certified nurse-midwives and physician assistants with special training perform the most common kind of first-trimester abortion. The Assembly passed the bill on a 50-25 vote in May, and the state Senate passed it Monday on a 25-11 vote, with most Democrats and no Republicans for it.

The Assembly must vote on some Senate amendments before the bill reaches the governor's desk, and Brown won't comment on bills that haven't reached his desk yet. Though he was raised Catholic and even spent time in a Jesuit seminary, he described himself in 2010 as "an uncompromising champion of a woman's right to choose."

The bill's supporters say there aren't enough doctors now providing abortions.

From "California Bill Would Let Nurses Perform Abortions During First Trimester" by Kathleen Miles, Huffington Post 8/28/13

The bill would allow nurse practitioners, certified nurse-midwives and physician assistants to be trained to perform first-trimester "manual vacuum aspiration abortions." An aspiration abortion involves inserting into the uterus a small tube attached to a pump that vacuums out fetal tissue.

Non-physicians are allowed to perform aspiration abortions in four states: Montana, Oregon, New Hampshire and Vermont.

The bill is supported by the California Medical Association and the American Nurses Association. It is sponsored by the California Women’s Health Alliance, which includes Planned Parenthood, California Church IMPACT, California Latinas for Reproductive Justice and Black Women for Wellness.

Patty Bellasalma, president of the California National Organization of Women, said the bill will improve health care access and jobs for women.

From "California Senate Approves Bill Allowing Nurses to Do Abortions" by Steven Ertelt, LifeNews.com 8/27/13

[Calif. state] Sen. Joel Anderson, R-Alpine, said legalized abortion was supposed to end the days when women’s lives were put at risk. Yet he said Atkins’ bill would allow the procedures by providers who have less training and in clinics without sufficient backup if there are complications.

Bill May of Catholics for the Common Good says the bill was approved even though polling data shows California residents oppose allowing nurses to do abortions.

“California has the most abortions in the nation and the highest rate per capita. But that is not good enough for the abortion business,” says California Right to Life.

The group is also opposing Assembly Bill 980, which it says will remove the current requirements that abortion be done in a medically surgical and antiseptic setting, but allow them to be done in facilities like the ‘walk-in’ counseling rooms now so popular in drug stores and pharmacies. None of the medical safety or even plumbing of current abortion centers will be required.

“If these bills pass, there will be higher medical standards for animal abortions; yes, veterinarians must provide better safety and cleanliness standards than Planned Parenthood is proposing,” it says.

From "California Bill Would Let Nurses Perform Abortions" by Napp Nazworth, Christian Post Reporter 8/27/13

Lila Rose, president and founder of Live Action, a pro-life advocacy organization, argued in a statement that a desire for greater access to abortion does not justify allowing nurses to perform the procedure.

"Do you let a butcher build your house because you 'deserve access to' a carpenter?" she said. "Do you let a nurse do your bypass surgery because you 'deserve access to' a cardiologist? Nowhere else does 'we really need it, therefore let unqualified people do it' make sense – and the mentality doesn't make sense here, either. In fact, it's downright dangerous.

"In the wake of Kermit Gosnell, in whose abortion facility a woman died from an untrained staff member's mistake, it's unthinkable for lawmakers in California to push a law like this. How many more times will my home state carry water for this unregulated industry which makes its money off of the vulnerable moments of women and by murdering pre-born children?"

Pentagon Gay Agenda: Christians = 'Hate Groups'

Documents obtained by Judicial Watch, a watchdog organization, under the "Freedom of Information Act" reveal that the DOD Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute training materials teach soldiers that Christians should be considered "extremists" if they espouse a belief that homosexual behavior is sinful.

The training guide warned that participation in groups that are regarded as extremist organizations is “incompatible with military service and is, therefore prohibited.”

The Pentagon did not return telephone calls seeking comment on the training materials.

“This document deserves a careful examination by military leadership,” Judicial Watch president Tom Fitton told Fox News. “Congress needs to conduct better oversight and figure out what the heck is going on in our military.”

The document relied heavily on information obtained from the Southern Poverty Law Center [SPLC], a leftwing organization that has a history of labeling conservative Christian organizations like the Family Research Council as “hate groups.”

Other than a mention of 9/11 and the Sudan, there is no discussion of Islamic extremism.

Abortion Clinics Close in Most States Since 2010

Since 2010, there are now at least 54 fewer locations in America killing unborn children in 27 states, according to a survey by the Huffington Post, as a result of an increase in pro-life state legislatures and governors across the nation.  Only Nebraska and Massachusetts have added an abortion clinic during this time frame.
Meanwhile, abortion advocates raise money targeting minorities and low income for abortions.

. . . the other 21 states and the District of Columbia, most of which have not passed new anti-abortion laws since 2010, were unable to accurately count their clinics because their health departments do not license abortion providers separately from other kinds of medical providers. The Huffington Post's tally did not include hospitals that provide abortions.

A comprehensive survey by The Daily Beast found that as of January 2013, 724 abortion clinics remained operational across the U.S.

While states have been passing abortion restrictions since long before 2010, the recent legislative trend has been to directly target abortion providers and make it harder for them to operate. In addition to passing mandatory waiting periods and mandatory ultrasounds, states are passing so-called "TRAP" laws -- the Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers. These laws often require abortion clinics to undergo extensive and costly renovations in order to become ambulatory surgical centers, which are essentially mini-hospitals.

From "Raising money to ensure women have access to abortions" by Marina Villeneuve, Los Angeles Times 8/25/13

Representatives from such abortion rights organizations say new restrictions are disproportionately affecting women whose income is below the poverty line, about 42% of those who have abortions.

As a result, low-income women are increasingly seeking assistance from little-known abortion funding groups, including the Lilith Fund. The mainly volunteer-run nonprofits in 40 states offer advice, grants and sometimes interest-free loans, raising money with wine tastings, yard sales and casserole cook-offs.

Many of the organizations were started in the late 1970s after Congress banned the use of federal money for abortion, with a few exceptions. Most states still do not cover abortion through Medicaid. And many private insurance policies also do not pay for the procedure. For low-income women, the funding groups are often their last resort.

From "Argument Against Inspecting Abortion Facilities is Disingenuous, Anti-Woman" by Rachel Cox, LifeNews.com 8/26/13

Whenever a legislator proposes safety regulations for abortion facilities, the abortion industry always plays the part of the victim to drum up sympathy and support for their cause. They often claim safety regulations are unnecessary because complications from abortion rarely arise. Abortion complications may be rare. However, that doesn’t mean they don’t happen and that clinics shouldn’t be required to be prepared for them.

According to the Guttmacher Institute, which strongly supports abortion, approximately 0.5% of abortion patients have a complication that requires hospitalization. That’s likely a low figure, but let’s assume that they’re right for the sake of argument. When you consider that there are well over one million abortions performed in the United States annually, the number of patients requiring hospitalization after an abortion would be over 5,000! Don’t these 5,000+ women deserve optimal care?

Abortion organizations like Planned Parenthood claim they care about women’s health. If they really cared, they wouldn’t oppose safety measures for their clinics.

Homosexuality NOT a Sin, Says Gov. Christie's Law

Gov. Chris Christie signed a bill Monday barring licensed therapists from trying to turn gay teenagers straight, making New Jersey the second state to ban so-called conversion therapy, along with California.

The bill passed both houses of the New Jersey Legislature with bipartisan support in June. Assemblyman Tim Eustace, who sponsored the bill and is openly gay, described the therapy as "an insidious form of child abuse."

In a note accompanying the bill, Christie said he believes people are born gay and that homosexuality is not a sin. That view is inconsistent with his Catholic faith, which teaches that homosexual acts are sins.

The anti-conversion therapy bill, A-3371, declares that being “lesbian, gay or bisexual is not a disease, disorder, illness, deficiency or shortcoming,” and it bans licensed therapists from providing gay-to-straight conversion therapy to children under age 18.

John Tomicki of the conservative League of American Families has called the bill unconstitutional and vowed in June, after its passage, that opponents would sue to prevent it from taking effect.

A lawsuit prevented California’s ban on conversion therapy for minors from taking effect as scheduled at the start of this year, and the legislation remains on hold. A three-judge panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals agreed last December to block the law pending a decision on its constitutionality. Opponents have argued that it violates free speech rights.

From "Chris Christie, theologian?" by Phil Lawler, CatholicCulture.org 8/21/13

. . . Two problems here. First, there’s a lively debate as to whether or not a homosexual orientation is established at birth. Christie is entitled to his opinion on that question, but his view carries no special weight; it certainly shouldn’t be the basis for legislation. . . . Second, Christie—who’s intelligent enough to know better—misrepresents the Church teaching. Whether or not a “predisposition to be homosexual” is innate, it’s not the disposition that is sinful; it’s the homosexual acts. The distinction is crucial, because if you understand the Church teaching, you can see the problem with the legislation that Christie approved.

Some people, it seems, are especially susceptible alcohol abuse. The root causes of this predisposition are not well understood. But even without rushing in where psychologists fear to tread, we can say two things. A tendency toward alcoholism is a disorder, not a sin. Yet getting drunk remains sinful—even for those who may have some innate weakness.

Now with that in mind, would anyone suggest barring psychologists from helping people to overcome a tendency toward alcoholism? Let’s hope not; such a ban would be a gross violation of individual freedoms. So is the ban on “reparative therapy.”

While the [above] statute itself was an undeniable win for gay activists, Christie’s willful entry into the fray suggests that 2016 may be the year in which the baton is passed from Democrats to Republicans in terms of an interesting presidential debate on gay rights.

How can [Republicans] possibly reconcile wooing social conservatives in the primary with any shot at winning mainstream America in the general? The public is advancing so quickly on LGBT equality that any serious candidate will have to avoid sounding antiquated – or perhaps even bigoted – in order to have a prayer with unmarried women, independents and the under-30 crowd.

“As a country we can agree to disagree,” [2016 presidential contender Sen. Rand] Paul told an ABC reporter. “As a Republican Party, that’s kind of where we are as well. The party is going to have to agree to disagree on some of these issues.”

That sounds frighteningly close to something Barack Obama might have said as a young senator gearing up for his 2008 presidential bid.

Homosexualists Persecute Florida Christian Official

After Miami-Dade County commissioners advocating for an expanded "gay rights" ordinance were forced to drop it due to public pressure generated by Christians, homosexualists have now launched a smear campaign against Lynda Bell, the lone commissioner of twelve who publicly voted against the measure.  Bell is an outspoken pro-life Christian who was key to the reinstitution of prayer at Commission meetings in December 2012.

In May, the county's largest gay rights group, SAVE Dade, introduced a "TransEquality" campaign "to pass a trans-inclusive countywide Human Rights Ordinance" that would amend Miami-Dade's 1998 anti-discrimination law. The law protects gays and lesbians, but doesn't include language for transgender rights.

The proposal seemed on track when, sponsored by Commissioners Bruno Barreiro and Audrey Edmonson, it passed on its first reading with an 11-1 vote -- with Bell casting the lone vote against it, according to the Miami Herald.

The amendment then went to the Health and Social Services Committee, of which Bell is a member.

The committee then decided to defer the discussion; Tuesday, its co-sponsors were forced to drop the proposal when it didn't have enough committee votes.

"Time and again Commissioner Bell has taken the side of bigotry and discrimination," SAVE Dade Deputy Director Maria Barth said in a news release after commission co-sponsors dropped a proposed addition to the county’s gay-rights ordinance.

Bell struck back by calling the SAVE Dade attack “dishonest and slanderous.”

“I am one vote on the commission, and I do not have the power to single-handedly derail any piece of legislation,” Bell said in a statement to the Miami Herald. “To indicate or suggest otherwise, based on the results of one preliminary vote is misleading at best and divisionary and inflammatory at worst.”

After lobbying by Miami-Dade's statewide Christian Family Coalition, the committee declined to discuss the proposal at its July 8 meeting and originally decided to defer until Aug. 26. Realizing the committee votes weren’t there, co-sponsors dropped the proposal on Tuesday.

“The commission has decided to withdraw the item in order to allow more time to educate the county commission on this important issue,” said Maria Barth, deputy director of SAVE Dade, the county’s leading gay-rights group.

The county’s existing gay-rights law that passed in 1998 doesn’t cover transgender people. Monroe County and Key West updated their human rights ordinances in 2003, Miami Beach in 2004, Palm Beach County in 2007 and Broward County in 2008.

Mara Keisling, executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality, said Tuesday’s decision “is the step that needed to be taken.”

The campaign culminated on July 8th, when more than two-hundred and fifty pro-Family, Human Rights advocates showed up at Miami-Dade County Commission chambers calling for a "NO" vote on the harmful, ideologically-based measure.

Miami-Dade is not alone in rejecting this dangerous and discriminatory "Transsexual" ordinance. Just this year, the Florida legislature rejected a similar proposal as did the City of Jacksonville last year along with at least half a dozen other municipalities across the country.

State and national LGBT activists believe eventually the law will pass.

“We’re going to meet with commissioners again to make sure the support is there, and the education is there, as well,” said Maria Barth, deputy director of SAVE Dade, the county’s leading LGBT rights group. “Then we’re going to continue with our ground game, our advocacy work within the county. Our staff is completely committed to passing this ordinance.”

Miami-Dade, where singer and Florida orange juice spokeswoman Anita Bryant led a 1977 repeal of the county’s original gay-rights ordinance, again banned discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in 1998. Voters upheld the law in 2002.

“Many more campuses today want to be called LGBT-friendly but only those who participate in the Campus Pride Index know what policies, programs and practices are important to create safer, more LGBT-friendly colleges and universities,” said Shane Windmeyer, executive director of Campus Pride.

“The index also grew for the seventh consecutive year to over 380+ colleges and universities, representing both 2 year and 4 institutions,” the group said.

[Examples:]
The University of Oregon is the only institution in the state to offer Queer Studies as a minor in their Department of Women’s and Gender Studies.

Macalester College, a private undergraduate liberal arts college in St. Paul, Minn., has what they call “all gender bathrooms” on campus.

The University of Massachusetts, Amherst has the first LGBTQA floor to be established on a college campus. “The floor includes gender-inclusive rooms for transgender students and an informally gender-inclusive bathroom,” its website said.

Lesbian Officer Punishes Airman for Moral Beliefs

19-year Air Force veteran Senior Master Sgt. Phillip Monk was immediately relieved of his duties as a result of his commander, (open lesbian) Major Elisa Valenzuela, forcing him to admit that he wouldn't advance the Gay Agenda due to his Christian faith.  Monk was forbidden to even return to his desk to retrieve personal belongings.

[Monk] claims a turn of events in June while serving in the 326th training squadron at Lackland Air Force base is why he's in front of the bright lights and camera now.

A letter seeking redress filed on behalf of Monk by the Liberty Institute says while on duty, the sergeant was asked by his female commander whether "he could agree that a verbal statement expressing religious or moral opposition to same-sex marriage was discrimination. Monk answered he did not agree that it was discrimination."

"When I wouldn't agree to my commander's viewpoint on a religious matter, I was relieved and stripped of my position," Monk said.

The case of the senior master sergeant is exactly what some lawmakers are trying to prevent by seeking changes in military policies on diversity, tolerance and religious freedom that would allow service members with strong religious or moral objections to homosexuality to speak their minds without fear of reprisal.

Monk, an evangelical Christian, said the issue came up when he was advising his commander about a situation involving a staff sergeant who had expressed opposition to homosexuality on religious grounds — an opinion shared with trainees that might be a violation of an Air Force policy barring the use of a position of authority to promote personal religious beliefs.

Monk said he wanted the incident to be treated as a learning experience, but the commander wanted to do more. Monk said this led to a discussion in which the commander pressed him into saying he also had a moral objection to gay marriage.

Monk said it was a “very, very contentious” discussion . . .

“In one of our first meetings, she was talking about her promotion and she mentioned something about a benediction,” Monk told Fox News. “She said she wanted a chaplain but objected to one particular chaplain that she called a bigot because he preached that homosexuality is a sin.”

“She then said, ‘I don’t know what kind of people actually believe that kind of crap,’” Monk said, recalling the meeting. “I knew I was going to have a rough time in this unit and I would have to be very careful what I said.”

Gay Agenda: NM County Clerk Assumes Role of Judge

The ObamaNation lawlessness spreads further . . .

Lynn Ellis, Clerk of Doña Ana County, has begun to issue same-sex "marriage" licenses based on his independent reading of the U.S. and New Mexico constitutions.  Not surprisingly, New Mexico Attorney General Gary King (Democrat candidate for governor) announced that he will NOT challenge any county wanting to follow suit.

Odd . . . the U.S. Supreme Court has NOT found any right to "gay marriage" in the Constitution, per their decisions several weeks ago.

Gay couples rushed to a courthouse in Las Cruces on Wednesday after the county clerk decided to issue same-sex marriage licenses in a surprise move that came as several legal challenges on the practice make their way through the courts.

Jeff Williams, a public information officer in the county's government and a reverend with Universal Life Church, said he was marrying same-sex couples all day long while wearing his rainbow-colored tie.

[Attorney General] King said Wednesday that "we feel like our position that the [current marriage] law is unconstitutional presents a barrier to us from bringing any action."

Proponents [of "gay marriage"] are banking on the outcome of the court cases, pending before separate district courts, and on a statement by Gary King, the state’s attorney general, in June saying the statutory framework that precludes same-sex marriage would be “vulnerable to challenge.”

. . . Despite her long-professed opposition to same-sex marriage, [Republican] Governor Martinez has softened her stance, saying voters should be the ones to decide whether to legalize it in New Mexico — “not a court, not politicians in Santa Fe, and not one random county clerk,” as her spokesman, Enrique Knell, put it in a statement on Wednesday.

Polls have indicated that the electorate is divided, though, with much of the resistance grounded in the strong Roman Catholic vein that runs through the state.

At the Doña Ana County clerk’s office on Wednesday, staff members were issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples at a rate of four an hour, a record for an office that generally grants five marriage licenses a day. . . .

UPDATE 12/19/13: "Gay marriage ruled legal by New Mexico's high court" by The Associated Press

Justice Edward L. Chavez said in a ruling that none of New Mexico's marriage statutes specifically prohibits same-gender marriages, but the state's laws as a whole have prevented gay and lesbian couples from marrying. The justices said same-sex couples are a discrete group that has been subjected to a history of discrimination and violence.

"Accordingly, New Mexico may neither constitutionally deny same-gender couples the right to marry nor deprive them of the rights, protections and responsibilities of marriage laws, unless the proponents of the legislation — the opponents of same-gender marriage — prove that the discrimination caused by the legislation is 'substantially related to an important government interest,'" Chavez wrote.

Eight of the state's 33 counties started issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples in August when a county clerk in southern New Mexico independently decided to allow the unions.

The Democratic-controlled Legislature repeatedly has turned down proposals for domestic partnerships for same-sex couples and a constitutional amendment that would have allowed voters to decide whether to legalize gay marriage. Measures to ban same-sex marriage also have failed.

The Obama administration has embarked on massive taxpayer-funded benefits to homosexuals who agree to "marry," such as vacations for members of the military and special rights to non-citizen homosexuals:  Foreigners who enter into same-sex "marriage" get faster visas, and those living in the U.S. with expired visas will be forgiven if they "marry" a same-sex partner.

-- From "The Military Endorses Same-Sex Marriage" by Mark Joseph Stern, Slate 8/14/13

Today, the Pentagon has announced that it will grant the exact rights and benefits to married same-sex couples that it does to married straight couples, including housing and healthcare, a vast expansion of its previously announced plans to extend only meager perks to gay couples. Even more surprisingly, the military will offer a 10-day leave to gay couples stationed in a non-marriage state to travel to the 13 states plus Washington, D.C., to be legally wed.

Make no mistake: This is huge news, the biggest military-related LGBT victory since the repeal of Don’t Ask Don't Tell. . . . To allow gay couples to leave the homophobic states [sic] in which they are stationed to gain equal rights—to encourage it, actually, by tethering it to a holiday—is a bold endorsement of marriage equality by the military.

And that endorsement will have broad repercussions throughout society. . . .

From "Military to allow leave for gay weddings" by David S. Cloud, Los Angeles Times 8/14/13

In a sign of how quickly society is changing, the Pentagon said Wednesday it would grant special leave to thousands of military personnel in same-sex relationships so they can get married in the 13 states where such unions are legal — making them eligible for the first time for full benefits provided to other military families.

The decision, which the Joint Chiefs of Staff unanimously backed, places the military in the forefront of the still-contentious national debate over same-sex unions.

Same-sex marriage is still barred in 37 states, including the entire South, where many of the Pentagon's largest installations are located. Thus many gay and lesbian couples in the military will face the unusual situation of having their unions recognized by federal authorities while they are on base, but not by the states where they live.

Critics contend that the Obama administration is pushing the military into the center of a political controversy with the goal of forcing even wider acceptance of same-sex marriage in the civilian realm.

As long as the marriage is valid in the jurisdiction, either U.S. or foreign country where it took place, it is valid for immigration purposes, the State Department said in statement. An engaged couple who cannot marry in the foreign fiancé’s country can apply for a fiancé(e) (K) visa.

Dartmouth Dumps African in Support of Homosexuals

Backed by the NAACP, Dartmouth College has rescinded the appointment of Dr. James Tengatenga, the former bishop for the Anglican diocese of Southern Malawi, because of past statements he made critical of homosexuality, although more recently, he HAS embraced "gay marriage."  Having thus been accused of not being gay-supporting enough, Dr. Tengatenga plans to engage legal counsel.

This is an intriguing saga of a battle between several leftist homosexualist institutions . . .

The extraordinary move by Dartmouth’s new president, Philip J. Hanlon, to retract the college’s offer won praise from those who raised concerns about how the appointment would affect gay students on a campus that has sometimes struggled with intolerance.

Hanlon, who met last week with Tengatenga on Dartmouth’s campus in Hanover, N.H., said in a statement Wednesday that after much reflection and consultation with senior leaders at the college, he decided that Tengatenga’s past statements compromised his ability to lead the William J. Tucker Foundation.

His appointment had sparked a campus controversy as word spread that he had sharply criticized the election of Bishop Gene Robinson of New Hampshire, the first openly gay bishop in the Anglican Communion, and that he had asserted in 2011 that the Anglican dioceses in Malawi remained “totally against homosexuality.”

Tengatenga released a statement saying that his views on gay rights had evolved over time and that he now supports marriage equality and considers discrimination of any kind sinful.

Despite Tengatenga’s July 18 statement announcing his support for LGBT rights, many students said they support Hanlon’s decision because they would not have wanted a Tucker leader who might have discriminated against community members.

After Tengatenga stated his support of same-sex marriage on Dartmouth Now, many still feel that Tengatenga’s prior statements reflect his personal views.

“We don’t know how many people had trouble separating comments expressing institutional views from private individual views,” said German and comparative literature professor Irene Kacandes, who led the Tucker search committee that selected Tengatenga.

. . . some North American church leaders are surprised and saddened by the decision, saying that they know Tengatenga as a bridge-builder and reconciler who has a deep understanding of the complex issues concerning human sexuality.

Tengatenga, who was elected as ACC chair in 2009, and also became chair of the Anglican Communion Standing Committee, told ENS on Aug. 15 that he is “saddened” by Dartmouth’s decision. “They have chosen to trust bigotry over truth and justice.”

One of the groups that countersigned the protest is the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. “Of all the groups to take the lead against a black person on flimsy grounds,” Tengatenga said. “So much for the advancement of colored people … It is sad that such an institution can stoop so low.”

Parents Allow Babies to Choose Gender From Birth

Transgenderism beliefs were first confined to mentally ill adults, but then spread to sexually confused teens; most recently parents have been encouraged to allow preschool kids to think they're a different gender, and now, the German government will provide birth certificates with NO gender identification, such that the baby can choose on its own.
"The new law also stipulates that individuals can opt to remain of indeterminate gender for their whole lives."

-- From "Germany To Offer Third Gender Option On Birth Certificates" by Amanda Scherker, The Huffington Post 8/17/13

A new German law stipulates that children who are born of indeterminate gender no longer have to be categorized as "male" or "female." Instead, parents can choose to leave the space blank on their child's birth certificate, according to German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung. Those individuals can eventually decide whether to identify as male, female or neither.

The German legislature voted this as an amendment to the Civil Status Act on May 7. As Süddeutsche Zeitung recently noted, the "legal change has received little attention so far." But that all changed when some determined the new law, while progressive, doesn't go far enough.

Incidentally, Germany's not the only country navigating the legal implications of appropriately categorizing third gender identifiers. Earlier this year, Nepal began issuing "third gender" citizenship certificates. Activists lauded the progressive measure, noting its potential to simplify lives for sexual minorities.

. . . Under the new law, individuals can also opt to remain outside the gender binary altogether.

. . . just six weeks after Australia became the first country in the world to introduce legal guidelines on gender recognition. Under the Australian system, which applies to all personal documents, individuals can select the third category irrespective of whether or not they have undergone sex reassignment surgery or hormone therapy.

Finland is the only EU member state aside from Germany to have made significant progress in the area of third gender recognition. Despite its efforts, bureaucratic hurdles in the Nordic country have meant that there is still no concrete legislative change in sight.

According to Silvan Agius, policy director at human rights organisation ILGA Europe -- the European chapter of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association -- the European Union is lagging behind on the issue. Though Brussels commissioned a report on trans and intersex minorities in 2010, and has since attempted to coordinate efforts to prohibit gender discrimination, progress has been halting.

From "Germany to become first European state to allow ‘third gender’ birth certificates" posted at Russia Today 8/17/13

The new law will come into force on November 1, on the back of a constitutional court decision which states that as long as a person “deeply feels” that they belong to a certain gender, they have a personal right to choose how they legally identify themselves.

Justice Minister Sabine Leuthheusser-Schnarrenberger said the decision will have deep repercussions and will require “comprehensive reform” of all documents issued by the state.

The ‘third gender’ designation will also have an effect on marriage laws. As of now, only men and women are allowed to legally marry in the country. Homosexual couples can enter into a civil partnership, and no provisions are made for unions between other genders.
