Rutgers Univ. Crucifying Jesus Art Draws Outrage

Photographs of so-called artwork depicting Jesus Christ crucified on a dartboard hanging prominently in the Rutgers Art Library on the College Avenue New Brunswick campus on Voorhees Mall went viral on social media causing officials to first relocate the display and then remove it entirely.
“Honestly, if this were Muhammad or some other religious figure there would have been more of an outcry, not to mention wouldn’t have been done in the first place.”

The display, named "Vitruvian Man," caught the eye of student Natalie Caruso, who said it was displayed in the Art Library. She asked staff to take it down and numerous others followed her lead in their outrage over the display, NJ.com reported.

While Caruso felt the display is unacceptable, others on the same Facebook post defended the display.

"I'm Catholic I'm not offended by this. If its an artwork in an art gallery that's someone's expression and their emotion in physical form. That's their view and you don't know what they dealt with in that religion emotionally just respect that and move on," Jonathan Ksiezopolski said in the comments.

“Just because something offends you doesn't give you the right to silence someone,” wrote Parth Mehrotra, a School of Arts and Sciences sophomore. “It's not about separation of church and state, it's not about anything, it's someone exercising their freedom of speech in a public art exhibit.”

Jessica Pellien, director of communications at Rutgers University Libraries, said the exhibit was removed because it failed to meet the library’s policy for art displays. These policies require exhibits “to be based on University events, curricular offerings and topics of interest to the university community,” in broad terms.

“The process that the Libraries use to determine how artwork is selected for inclusion in an exhibit takes into consideration freedom of expression as well,” she said in an email. “We have concluded that the policy and process the Libraries use to select artwork for exhibitions was not followed.”

The dartboard Jesus art piece was one of dozens of unusual art pieces displayed around the three-story library. The other pieces include a stack of coins covered with a condom (titled "Tower of Babel"), a milk carton with a photo of Holocaust victim Anne Frank on the back (titled "Cute Kids Make Good Advertising") and a Rutgers diploma hanging from a real estate sign (titled "The Bullfighter Extends His Cape").

NJ Parents Reject School's New Transgender Policy

Unlike the parents in several New Jersey school districts which recently enacted the Gay/Transgender Agenda open-bathroom policies, parents of the Pascack Valley Regional High School District are not standing still for a policy that allows students to hide an alternative "gender identity" from their own parents, and also requires the school to accept every child's sexual whim.
The Board of Education believes the responsibility for determining a student's gender identity rests with the student . . . Therefore, the Board will accept a student's assertion of his or her gender identity when there is consistent and uniform assertion of the gender identity, or any other evidence that the gender identity is sincerely held as a part of the student’s core identity. The Board of Education will not question or disregard the assertion of a student’s gender identity.
The Board also recognized a transgender student’s right to privacy, and therefore, if a student represents that his/her parent(s)/guardian(s) is unaware of the student’s gender identity, the school and district staff must obtain consent from the student prior to communicating with his/her parent(s)/guardian(s) regarding the student’s transgender status.

UPDATE 4/2/16: Toilets NOT in Restrooms will be New Design for Transgender Agenda

-- From "Transgender rights under debate in Pascack Valley schools" by Myles Ma, The Star-Ledger NJ.com 3/30/16

A crowd of more than 100 people debated the issue Tuesday night at Pascack Hills High School [in Montvale, NJ].

The policy would prohibit discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation, allow transgender students to participate in physical education classes and sports, as well as provide access to restrooms and locker rooms based on their gender identity.

Pascack Valley school officials plan to introduce the policy next week and vote on it the following week.

From "Bergen School District Designs Policy To Protect Transgender Students" by Daniel Hubbard, Patch Staff 3/31/16

A new proposal by the Pascack Valley Board of Education would permit district students to use locker rooms and restrooms based on their gender identity and require staff to address students by the name and gender pronoun a student identifies with.

A student would be permitted to take physical education classes "consistent with their gender identity."

A student's records, including grade books and their permanent record, would be required to reflect the gender as well. Official student records would be changed if a parent documents a legal change of a student's name or gender.

From "Pascack Valley enters national debate on transgender rights" by Andrew Wyrich and Abbott Koloff, staff writers, The Record (Bergen County, NJ) 3/30/16

Theresa Jordan, a Hillsdale resident and mother of a Pascack Valley High School student, said her objections over the issue of restroom use were centered on her religious beliefs, adding that she was “looking out for the rights of my daughter not to be exposed to something I don't want her to be exposed to.”

Pascack Valley temporarily tabled the proposal last month after parents at a Feb. 22 Board of Education meeting opposed it, with one woman questioning whether it opened the door to “sexual immorality.” . . .

The Pascack Valley proposal is similar to model school policies that have been circulating around the state. In North Jersey, North Arlington, Carlstadt, East Rutherford and Mahwah have adopted such policies. The North Arlington policy, approved earlier this year, uses the same language as the one in Pascack Valley. Last month, Toms River school officials put a similar proposal on hold after it met with opposition from parents and local religious leaders.

At the meeting, held at Pascack Valley High School, Hillsdale resident Bernadette Orso, a mother of a teenage son, called that part of the policy an "invasion of privacy" and not "proper or respectful."

Sherry Silk, a Montvale resident, agreed. In the instance of an anatomical boy identifying as a girl, she said it may "open a door" for "sexual immorality."

Carolee Adams, another Montvale resident, concurred, telling the board to postpone the vote and that the policy needs "further investigation and time."

While the board moved to table the policy after much public outcry, Board President Jeffrey Steinfeld told parents that the district's two principals, as well as the board attorney, told the board that they should have the policy in place, for one to avoid litigation. Board Member Arnold Scher was opposed to tabling the policy.

[Steinfeld] added that the policy committee reviewed the policy and a "tremendous amount of thought" went into it. Superintendent Erik Gundersen explained that the needs and rights of transgender students is a "significant factor for the policy."

"We have a strong policy in place," said Gundersen. "You have to allow [transgender students] the right to have access to a locker room. They have the legal right to have access. We don't have the legal right to say no."

Accused Bisexual Abuser Hired by Multiple Schools

Days after Jinwoo Seong, 36, was fired by the New York Department of Education from Martin Van Buren High School in Queens for oral sex with a male student and groping numerous students of both sexes, he began teaching math at Don Bosco Technical Academy (middle school) in the Paterson, New Jersey school district, having passed the necessary background check.
“Jinwoo Seong’s inappropriate conduct makes it clear that he has no place in New York City public schools.”
-- Richard Condon, Special Commissioner of Investigation, New York City School District (9/28/2015)

Yet, the New York officials told Seong “this was in-house and ‘you don’t have to worry about this moving on.’”

In October, New Jersey OK’d Seong’s application to recognize his New York certifications — a month before he was fired from NYCs as schools investigator Richard Condon wrote in a letter he had “no place” in the schools, the report said. He started at Don Bosco in a $62,000 position on Dec. 7, the report said.

The [New York] Post reported that the investigation found he’d exposed himself to a male student, touched a girl’s breast and butt, cracked “gay jokes” and had a girl measure a boy’s genitals. The New York Deptartment of Education assigned Seong to a “rubber room” where he reported and sat all day until his firing was official on Nov. 30, according to the Post.

Seong has denied the allegations. Capt. James Smith, executive director of security and internal investigations for Paterson schools, told the Post that Seong passed a criminal background check because he was never charged with a crime.

Seong’s lawyer, Vincent White, said in a letter to Paterson officials that his client “has never been charged with any crime by local law enforcement.” White’s letter, dated Feb. 1, also described the New York City School District’s eight-page report accusing Seong of the sexual activity as “extremely flawed.”

White told Paterson officials that the New York report “ignored the fact that students gave inconsistent, hearsay statements and some alleged victims even denied the truth of the allegations until they were further prodded to confirm them.” White said students at Martin Van Buren High School in Queens were retaliating against Seong for calling their parents about discipline problems.

District officials said they were unaware of the New York investigation targeting Seong until contacted about the situation late last week by a reporter from the New York Post. The Post published a story about Seong on Sunday. The story said Seong’s termination by the New York education department took effect Nov. 30.

The report says Seong denied the allegations. Seong’s lawyer wrote to Paterson school officials that he hoped his client “will not be further victimized due to these baseless allegations made by some troubled students.”

Seong, who was fired, managed to get a new job in Jersey simply by not revealing his troubled past. The case shows how a teacher accused of shocking misconduct can slip through bureaucratic cracks and back into the classroom.

Capt. James Smith, executive director of security and internal investigations for Paterson schools, on Friday immediately ordered Seong’s removal from the classroom pending further inquiry when informed by The Post about Condon’s report.

“If you’ve been disciplined for inappropriate conduct with a student, we’ll take action,” Smith said he told Seong.

The state is investigating Seong to determine if he should be stripped of his license.

NJ Atheist Official's Hissy Fit re: Christmas Tree

Charlene Storey, a Democrat councilwoman in Roselle Park, New Jersey, threw a temper tantrum and spontaneously resigned her post because the majority borough council voted to rename the "Holiday Tree Lighting" ceremony to the "Christmas Tree Lighting."  However, after a brief cooling off period, she rescinded her resignation in trade for the creation of a council diversity committee, which she will lead.
“People are offended because we use the word ‘Christmas.'  Well I feel offended when you tell me ‘holiday.' . . . it’s a Christmas tree.”

Minutes after the Roselle Park council approved the [ceremony name] change Thursday night, Charlene Storey walked out of the meeting. She submitted a resignation letter, saying the borough’s decision to change the ceremony’s name from a “tree lighting” to a “Christmas tree lighting” favors one religion and “cuts non-Christians out of the loop.”

Earlier this week, the Roselle Park City Council voted 4 to 2 to change the name . . .

Storey, who was raised Catholic but describes herself as a non-believer, said she made the decision because she did not want to be a part of a city council that excluded other religions.

“I cannot in good conscience continue to be part of a council that is exclusionary or to work with a mayor who is such,” Storey said in her resignation letter.

She also sited the separation of church and state plus an increasingly diverse community.

The following statement was released by both Mayor Carl Hokanson and Councilwoman-At-Large Charlene Storey [excerpts]:
The new name of the event will remain in place, as approved by the council, the mayor and the councilwoman said. Storey still opposes the change.

Storey and Hokanson said a misunderstanding between them before this week’s council meeting led to each feeling blindsided at the session.

Hokanson said: “It was never my intent to insult anyone’s beliefs or religion. We live in an increasingly diverse community, and we have to come to grips with that fact.”

[Mayor Carl Hokanson] said he's received dozens of calls and emails, most of them in support of the renaming of the Dec. 11 event.

"Just like the Easter Bunny is the Easter Bunny and not the Holiday Bunny," he said. "It was never my intent to insult anyone's beliefs or religion."

Hokanson said growing up in Roselle Park the event was always called a "Christmas Tree Lighting." Now, in his first year as mayor and master of ceremonies of the event, he wanted to change it back.

He said "Christmas" was removed from the name years ago after a lawsuit over Jersey City's holiday display.

Storey said Mayor Carl Hokanson had briefly mentioned the idea of making the change several days ago. However, Storey said the resolution for the change was not listed on the agenda and she was surprised when it was brought up at the meeting.

She said she had checked other municipalities and only found events, tree lightings or holiday tree lightings, and none that included the word Christmas.

Hokanson said each municipality can use what title it wants to use. New York, he said, calls it a Christmas Tree lighting and another city may not.

From "Council Approves Mayor’s Request To Have A ‘Christmas Tree Lighting’" by Saul Qersdyn, Roselle Park News 12/4/15

“I’d like to have council’s permission to change it from the Annual Holiday [Tree] Lighting back to the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting if that’s all right with everybody,” stated Mayor Carl Hokanson at last night’s Mayor & Council meeting. He was referring to the popular winter annual event currently known as the Annual Holiday Tree Lighting And Gala which will be held next Friday. He announced his proposal by producing a flier he had included in every council member’s meeting packet which is usually distributed days before a meeting.

Councilwoman-At-Large Charlene Storey immediately commented, “Well, I’ve got to say Mr. Mayor, I have checked that out and every other town in the area calls it a holiday lighting or a tree lighting. I think that this is moving away from inclusiveness to exclusiveness so I cannot support that.”

Mayor Hokanson responded, “Well, again, that’s everybody else. That doesn’t have to be here. I’m just asking if that’s what everybody wants.”

As the meeting progressed, during the Borough Engineer’s report, Councilwoman Storey left the dais. Almost five minutes later, the Council President returned momentarily to pick up her coat and belongings then left the meeting for good without saying a word to anyone. Later on, Mayor Hokanson appointed Councilman Kelly – the longest sitting member of council – as the acting Council President.

From "Councilwoman Storey Provides Insight Into Decision To Resign" by Saul Qersdyn, Roselle Park News 12/5/15

Councilwoman-At-Large Charlene Storey issued a statement providing further details on her decision to resign her seat. [An excerpt from that] statement is included below. The councilwoman also addressed some additional questions in order to provide insight into a series of events and decisions that, in less than 24 hours, would have the second highest-ranking member of council and the only woman serving as an elected official call it a day over a single word.
. . . Had the name of this event never been changed to use a non-religious term, had it stayed with “Christmas” instead of being changed to “Holiday,” I could have accepted it as a cultural term. But to change it from a neutral term back to a religious one was clearly meant to put religion back into the public event. And to underscore religious division at this time in the nation and world is, to me, as wrong as wrong can be.

. . . All four members of the Council who voted for this are male, white, Catholic and members of the Knights of Columbus, a religious organization that every year posts a large sign urging, “Keep Christ in Christmas.” So I find it hard to accept that to them, a “Christmas” tree is a secular tree.

. . . I am a non-Christian and a non-believer. My husband and I are Humanists, as I’ve pointed out in campaign literature and in my bio on the Borough’s website. We believe it’s our duty to do good in this life as a matter of principle, not as a religious obligation.

Angry Muslims Storm New Jersey School Board

School officials in Jersey City, New Jersey called for security after an unruly mob of Muslim parents attempted a take-over of the School Board meeting last week.  The local religious minority demanded that the school officially declare an Islamic holiday on September 24th.

-- From "Jersey City School Board Meeting Gets Heated During Debate Over Closing for Muslim Holiday" by Brian Thompson, WNBC-TV4 (New York, NY) 9/17/15

The Jersey City Board of Education had originally proposed to close schools next Thursday so that Muslim students could observe the [Eid al-Adha] holiday, and the City Council unanimously supported it a week ago. The academic year would have extended one day to June 23, 2016 as a result.

But during the nearly four hours of debate at the board meeting Thursday, some of the Jewish faith said they felt they were being discriminated against because they weren't getting their own school days off for holidays like Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

In the original resolution announcing the vote, the board said it was "committed to honoring the great diversity of our district, including our religious diversity," and that it will "continue to engage our communities to explore ways to support its diverse communities and celebrate our many cultures and faiths."

On Saturday, Jessica Abdelnabbi Berrocal, a Muslim parent in Jersey City who started the petition for the holiday in June, said she thinks the vote rather meant that "they aren't ready for the change."

Lyles's Chief of Staff Maryann Dickar, who also attended the meeting, said it is inaccurate to characterize the debate on the holiday as "a conflict between Jews and Muslims." She said she recalled only one statement that referenced the Jewish holiday, among "hundreds" of other comments.

From "New York City Schools Observing Muslim Holiday For First Time" by Julia Glum, International Business Times 9/23/15

New York City public schools were scheduled to close Thursday for their first time recognizing the Muslim holiday Eid al-Adha. The district, which serves about 1.1 million students, was due to become the largest school system in the United States to shut down for the observance. Local Muslims welcomed the move as a symbol of the community's acceptance and shift toward inclusion, Agence France Presse reported.

New York City has an estimated 600,000 to 1 million Muslim residents, and between 10 and 12 percent of its public school students identify as Muslim. That means that holy days tended to devastate attendance -- for example, the last time Eid al-Adha was on a school day, more than one-third of PS/IS 30 in Brooklyn was absent, according to a news release.

About two years after first agreeing to give students the day off, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the calendar change in March. He officially canceled classes on Eid al-Fitr, which occurred in July and marked the end of the fasting month Ramadan, and Eid al-Adha. Eid al-Adha, also called the Feast of Sacrifice, runs from Wednesday night to Thursday night. Schools in New York City were already closed Wednesday for the Jewish observance of Yom Kippur.

“It is a huge victory to actually see the day come,” says Linda Sarsour, a member of the Coalition for Muslim School Holidays and a New York activist with three children.

“I’m sure this kind of policy from the government side will push Muslims further to feel a sense of belonging,” he said.

New York follows at least seven other school districts that close for Eid in New Jersey, Massachusetts and Vermont, but activists are still campaigning in other parts of the country.

Ibrahim Hooper, spokesperson for the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the country’s largest Muslim civil liberties organization, agreed that the holiday comes at the right time.

NJ Judge Rules Deviant Sexual Behavior is Normal

While mental health professionals have been redefining sexual norms for many years, this week's ruling by a New Jersey judge is not only intended to create a common law basis for the normality of homosexual behavior, it also means that anyone, including clergy, who agrees to counsel a person desperate to overcome homosexual temptation, is committing an illegal, fraudulent act.

-- From "New Jersey judge: Gay conversion therapy claims describing homosexuality as curable are fraud" by The Associated Press 2/11/15

Hudson County Superior Court Judge Peter Bariso Jr. ruled Tuesday against the Jersey City-based Jews Offering New Alternatives for Healing [JONAH]. He said JONAH's claims are illegal based on the state's Consumer Fraud Act.

JONAH has been sued by four men and two of their mothers, alleging their methods don't work.

Bariso also ruled last week that JONAH could not call proponents who planned to offer testimony that homosexuality is an illness.

From "N.J. judge calls gay conversion therapy claims fraud" by Andrew Seidman, Philadelphia Inquirer Trenton Bureau 2/12/15

The ruling is the first time a judge in the United States has found that as a matter of law, homosexuality is a normal variation of human sexuality and not a disease or disorder, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center [SPLC], a prominent civil rights group whose lawsuit spurred the judge's order.

The American Psychiatric Association declassified homosexuality as a mental disorder in 1973, and the American Psychological Association says conversion therapy can cause depression and suicidal thoughts.

. . . lawyer Charles LiMandri told the Associated Press that [JONAH] used disorder in the context of Jewish law, and was not speaking of homosexuality as a psychological disorder.

"They're not your typical target of Consumer Fraud Act defendants who are making misrepresentations of people," LiMandri said. "They're just trying to help people who are in distress get help if they want it. If they don't want it, that's fine."

From "Selling Cure for Being Gay Found Illegal in New Jersey" by Jason Grant, New York Times 2/13/15

This week, in a lawsuit brought against the counseling group by that man and three others, a State Superior Court judge in Hudson County, N.J., ruled that counselors selling so-called conversion therapy with claims that homosexuality was a curable mental disorder were engaged in consumer fraud.

The judge also wrote that promoting the therapy by touting “success” statistics “when there is no factual basis for calculating such statistics” would further violate the law. He did not address whether Jonah had done so.

. . . Judge Bariso prohibited Jonah from calling five expert witnesses because, he said, their supposed expertise rested on the faulty premise that homosexuality was a sickness. He allowed a sixth expert witness to testify on a separate issue.

The suit [Ferguson v. JONAH] seeks financial damages and the closing of Jonah. . . .

Bariso granted partial summary judgment to the plaintiffs, four young men who obtained gay conversion therapy–referred to by the court as sexual orientation change efforts, or SOCE—through Jews Offering New Alternatives for Healing (JONAH), plus two of their mothers.

JONAH is a Jersey City, N.J., nonprofit formerly known as Jews Offering New Alternatives to Homosexuality.

JONAH had tried to justify statements that homosexuality is unhealthy based on information from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control about HIV and AIDS but Bariso noted that he had already determined such evidence was irrelevant in ruling on the experts because the case does not turn on any harms that might be caused by homosexual conduct.

The suit was brought as a test case by Southern Poverty Law Center, a nonprofit legal advocacy organization based in Montgomery, Ala. . . .

JONAH is being represented by the group Rancho Santa Fe, California-based legal group the Freedom of Conscience Defense Fund.

Charles S. LiMandri, president and chief counsel at the Defense Fund, told The Christian Post that he was "disappointed" with the decision and felt that it could provide "great grounds for an appeal" if they lose at that court level [when a jury trial begins in June 2015].

LiMandri also told CP that despite Bariso's decision on the experts, the judge left intact a "religious liberty defense" for JONAH that could undermine the plaintiff's case.

"Whatever statements that they made regarding homosexuality being disordered was in the context of them being a religious ministry," said LiMandri.

She said that her father and mother had her when they were both 18 themselves, but broke up while her mother was still pregnant.  The women said that she’d had only a brief relationship with her father as a child, and then they had been estranged for many years.

The two reunited when she was 17 after he had spent years trying to contact her.  She believes her mother was actively keeping them from having a relationship.

As a teenager she said that she didn’t date very much, but identifies as bisexual.

They plan to move to New Jersey where adult incest isn’t illegal, and hope to have a big family.

From "Woman tells magazine she's 'marrying' her father, moving to N.J." by Paul Milo & Justin Zaremba, The Star-Ledger (Newark, NJ) 1/17/15

Former Morris County Prosecutor Robert Bianchi told NJ Advance Media that so long as certain criteria were met, a sexual relationship between the two may be legal.

"So long as she's not mentally incapacitated, they're both over the age of 18, and there's no physical force or coercion, or he's not otherwise subject to specific parole stipulations," Bianchi said.

In New Jersey, a parent who has sex with their child under the age of 18 can be charged both with sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child, Bianchi said. Given the length of the alleged relationship, Bianchi said, "an inventive prosecutor" could argue that the woman may have been mentally incapacitated because she's been a victim of abuse.

Keith Pullman runs a blog that advocates marriage equality. It’s a forum where consenting adults feel comfortable expressing their love for another despite the sex of their partners or relationship to them. The site, as Pullman explains, focuses on unconditional love, and incest based on GSA [“Genetic Sexual Attraction”] is included.

Some people involved in these relationships, where they are physically and emotionally attached to a blood relative, prefer to remain anonymous, primarily over fears of being ostracized or jailed. The teenager who admitted to being in a father-daughter sexual relationship would only reveal that she is from the Great Lakes region.

The girl recalls confusion during her preteen and teen years, and she admits to being hurt by a boy and experimenting with a same-sex relationship.

From "What It’s Like to Date Your Dad" by Alexa Tsoulis-Reay, New York Magazine 1/15/15

In the late '80s, the founder of a support group for adopted children who had recently reconnected with their biological relatives coined the term “Genetic Sexual Attraction” (GSA) to describe the intense romantic and sexual feelings that she observed occurring in many of these reunions. . . .

Here, an 18-year-old woman from the Great Lakes region describes her romantic relationship of almost two years with the biological father she met after 12 years of estrangement.

How many stepfathers have you had?
Near the end of the time my parents had joint custody of me I had a stepdad. He took good care of my mom but she went through one of her stages again, so it ended. She had another husband who went crazy and tried to kill her. He was schizophrenic. Then she got with my brother’s dad and they dated for a while but when my brother was born the dad didn’t want anything to do with him, so I helped my mom raise him. Once he was about 3 she got together with my current stepdad and had my baby sister. My brother and I are 9 years apart and my sister is 12 years younger than me. I think of them as my brother and sister, and I also think of them as my babies because I helped raise them.
Did you date when you were a teenager?
I didn’t really have a social life. . . . In fifth grade I dated a boy for two years. But one night he got drunk and had sex with a girl who ended up pregnant. . . .
Did you have sex with that boyfriend?
No. I had a girlfriend in middle school and that was the most major sexual experience I’d ever had. But she was very religious and every time we were intimate she would sob and read me verses out of the Bible. It made me feel like I’d hurt her. The second time we did it she cried and said we’d done something wrong and she was worried her grandmother would find out. I was done after that. No more crying, and no more Bible transcripts. She had me in tears because I felt so guilty.
Did you tell [your father] you were a virgin?
Yes. I told him I wanted him to be the first person I made love to. We talked about how it could be awkward if it didn’t end up working out. He also said that if I didn’t feel comfortable at any point I should tell him.
Did you think that a relationship was a possibility?
We discussed it before we had sex. I told him I was saving myself for someone who I’d be committed to for the rest of my life. It was important for me to make it clear that if I made love to him he was in a relationship with me. I didn’t regret it at all. I was happy for once in my life. We fell deeply in love.
Had you been depressed before that?
I’ve struggled with chronic depression, and I was bullied at school.
You’re engaged?
I’m planning on a full-on wedding but it won’t be legally registered. And personally, I don’t believe you need a piece of paper to prove that you want to be with the person you love. When you get married, you are signing part of yourself over to somebody. We’ll tell everybody that we got our marriage license, but they don’t have to see it. One of our friends will act as the celebrant.
Will you tell your kids that their father is your dad, and their grandfather?
We’ve decided that most likely we won’t. I don’t want to give them any problems.

New Jersey Boy Returns to Middle School as Girl

During the summer, Brian Pepe and his mother decided that because Brian was diagnosed with mental illnesses that he should show up at Thorne Middle School as a girl named Rachel.  The Middletown (New Jersey) School District initially declined to accept Brian in female attire and makeup, but under public pressure, later agreed that the administration and faculty should undergo Gay Agenda indoctrination (a.k.a. "sensitivity training").

Angela Peters, mother to young Rachel, says the Middletown School District recently informed her that because Rachel's birth certificate lists her name as Brian, it would not be able to identify the student as a female or use her post-transition name. Additionally, the school district reportedly has refused a request for the teen to use a private nurse's bathroom away from the school's public restrooms.

It is, however, illegal in New Jersey to discriminate against a person based upon their gender—an aspect that, coupled with the attention the incident is garnering, has Superintendent William O. George promising to look back into Pepe's case.

“He was going to school last year as Brian,” said Angela Peters, Rachel’s mother, adding that her child developed stress-related seizures, depression and panic attacks. “How can I send her back as Rachel? And I am not sending her back as Brian because the depression will start again.”

Rachel’s mother admits she struggles sometimes with knowing what is the right thing to do. While Rachel is young, there will be little talk of hormone shots or surgery. But that is her child’s future, if she wants it.

“We as a district want to do everything we can as a district,” [Supt.] George said. “Every child is different and their education and social and emotional well being is my priority. We will work with them to find the appropriate placement.”

“I support this without interviewing this child. It certainly is reasonable. Children with psycho-sexual issues often benefit from a fresh start at a new school,” he said.

According to the American Civil Liberties Union, New Jersey is among more than a dozen states where schools have been protecting transgender students such as Middletown resident Rachel Pepe from harassment or discrimination.

The others are California, Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Vermont, Washington, and the District of Columbia.

While some states have laws that refer to education specifically, others like New Jersey’s classify public schools as public accommodations where gender identity discrimination is illegal. The Garden State also has ruled that gender identity discrimination laws cover some or all nonsectarian private schools. New Jersey’s bullying provisions also provide some protections.

. . . According to Garden State Equality, [Supt.] George said Middletown Township Public Schools staff would undergo lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender sensitivity training.

In April, [President Obama's] U.S. Department of Education clarified that Title IX, the federal legislation that prohibits sex discrimination, extends to transgender students.

"Indeed, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth report high rates of sexual harassment and sexual violence. A school should investigate and resolve allegations of sexual violence regarding LGBT students using the same procedures and standards that it uses in all complaints involving sexual violence," the Education Department's guidelines said.

They continue: "The fact that incidents of sexual violence may be accompanied by anti-gay comments or be partly based on a student's actual or perceived sexual orientation does not relieve a school of its obligation under Title IX to investigate and remedy those instances of sexual violence."

Public Prayer: Vast Majority of Americans Want it

A just-released poll by Fairleigh Dickinson University finds that 73% of Americans, including 60% of Democrats, favor prayer at public civic meetings; but what kind of prayer does the public want? It appears, that just as the political correctness police have taught Americans to believe in an unknown god, this poll finds that Americans want the prayers directed toward some thing other than God the Creator (the author of American freedom).

Public opinion is often difficult to understand, such as the poll showing that Most Americans are Disgusted with American Morals, Yet Favor Sin

UPDATE 9/27/14: Gallup Poll Finds Most Americans Support Prayer in School

From "U.S. voters say it's OK to pray at public meetings, NJ poll finds" by Jeff Goldman, The Star-Ledger (New Jersey) 4/23/14

About 73 percent of the 883 people asked in a Fairleigh Dickinson University PublicMind poll conducted in December say it's OK "as long as the public officials are not favoring some beliefs over others."

"This has always been a praying nation, despite its very secular Constitution," Peter J. Woolley, professor of comparative politics at Fairleigh Dickinson University said in a release. "People generally see generic prayer as harmless, if not uplifting, not as something that is oppressive."

"An overwhelming number of Americans are upset by two things — not being allowed to pray, and someone insisting that only their prayer is legitimate," Woolley said.

From "National FDU poll: OK to pray at public meetings" by William Westhoven, The Daily Record (Parsippany, NJ) 4/23/14

Seventy-three percent of the 883 registered voters responding to the poll agreed with the statement, “Prayer at public meetings is fine as long as the public officials are not favoring some beliefs over others.” Less than a quarter of the respondents — 23 percent — agreed with the statement, “Public meetings shouldn’t have any prayers at all because prayers by definition suggest one belief over another.”

Rev. Neill Tolboom of Morristown United Methodist Church said, “I believe it is appropriate, especially if you are only talking about prayer, and not expounding on one faith over another. All you are doing is evoking help from a creator, or God, and acknowledging that there may be something greater than us, a spiritual realm. Maybe the prayer is for someone who is sick, or you are just praying for guidance. What could be wrong with that?”

Republicans favored public-meeting prayer by a margin of 88 percent to 10 percent, while Democrats favored it 60 percent to 36 percent. The survey showed no significant statistical difference between men and women, whites and non-whites, or age groups.

The U.S. Supreme Court will soon rule on the constitutionality of prayer at public meetings [in Greece, New York].

“(Greece officials) were trying their best not to offend anyone by making prayers as generic as possible. In this survey we asked if this is an acceptable way to approach the problem. Three in four people said yes,” said Peter Woolley, professor of political science at Fairleigh Dickinson in New Jersey.

The key, however, is that this case centers on generic prayer that is “harmless, if not uplifting,” said Woolley. “Americans have become more used to the idea that one denomination is not necessarily privileged over another. Even unbelievers — atheists who would say prayer ‘is not for me’ — approved” of allowing nonspecific prayer.

From "New survey: generic public prayer is okay, Jesus Christ is the problem" by Laura Jones, The Global Dispatch 4/24/14

While support for prayer was similar for every age group and both men and women, the most religiously observant were the most inclined to approve of it. Among those who attend religious services (excluding funerals or weddings) at least once or twice a month, 86 percent would allow prayer, 11 percent would not.

For those who attend services a few times a year, 73 percent support it but opposition doubles to 26 percent.Even those who seldom or never go to church backed the prayers at public meetings, with 58 percent approving and 36 percent opposing.

Sex in Jersey Kindergarten, Nobody Blames Culture

School officials in rural Mullica Township, New Jersey want to fire teacher Kelly Mascio for finding two of her 5-year-old students naked in the bathroom (when asked, the girl and boy told Mascio they were "having sex"), but the union is defending the teacher.  "Experts" are not sure what the children were up to, but say it may be a case of bullying.

Perhaps some are wondering if the students were practicing "safe sex" as taught in public schools or if they were role-playing their home media viewing.

Superintendent Brenda Harring-Marro has filed tenure charges against the teacher, Kelly Mascio, of Mullica Township, said Mullica Township Education Association President Barbara Rheault.

“Our main concern is that the administration has completely forgone all traditional disciplinary avenues available in handling the incident,” said Rheault, who is also a township committeewoman. “The administration has selected a disciplinary route that has resulted in enormous emotional and professional turmoil, and has strained the confidence and trust of school staff, parents and community members.”

The Board of Education met Wednesday night in executive session to determine whether to certify the charges, which would bring the issue before a state arbitrator to decide if Mascio can be fired.

About 200 people came out in Mascio’s support, but the board refused to tell the public whether it had certified the complaint, Rheault said.
