More educators are teaching American students that the greater risk to the public is white Christian terrorists rather than Muslim terrorists.

[Dr. Ross Avilla] essentially argued many Americans wrongly believe Muslims make up the vast majority of U.S. terrorists because they have not thought long and hard on the matter.

The scholar made the statements to his class of about 250 students, mostly freshmen.

“They are students who are impressionable,” one of the students who provided the video told The College Fix, adding “I wanted to learn about psychology. I didn’t want to hear biased politics.”

A widely touted study claiming right-wing extremism is more deadly than Islamic terrorism in the United States has been debunked by a history professor who shows that, in actuality, there have been 62 Americans killed by Islamic terrorists in the U.S. for every one American killed by right-wing extremists.

Professor Andrew Holt of Florida State College at Jacksonville recently published his analysis that discredits the widespread sentiment that right-wing attackers are the deadliest domestic terrorists in the U.S.

Holt’s analysis points out numerous flaws in the highly cited study released in 2015 by New America Foundation, which claimed 48 deaths in the U.S. were due to “far right wing attacks” while only counting 45 deaths due to “violent jihadist attacks.”

The study’s findings were not only touted by many major news outlets across the nation as proof that fears over radical Islamic terror in the U.S. are overblown, but the findings are also used today in some college classrooms as an example of Islamophobia.

But, Holt points out the foundation’s findings are based on flawed data sets.

The now oft repeated claim that right wing extremism is more dangerous to Americans than Islamic extremism is based on total deaths and excludes casualties. Moreover, such accounts limit themselves to attacks in the United States (not worldwide), and purposefully exclude the nearly 3,000 deaths (as well as the over 6,000 survivors treated at hospitals) that took place on September 11, 2001. They don’t count the 9/11 deaths as then the numbers would be extraordinarily lopsided (in terms of total U.S. deaths due to Islamic extremism vs right wing extremism) and so such claims are careful to be based only on deaths in the United States AFTER the events of 9/11.

Indeed, if you include the death totals from 9/11 in such a calculation, then there have been around 62 people killed in the United States by Islamic extremists for every one American killed by a right wing terrorist (a 62 to 1 ratio if you divide the slightly over 3000 deaths due to Islamic extremism by the 48 deaths attributed to right wing extremism).

. . . recognize the disproportionately high number of attacks by Islamic extremists in the United States, who, even after excluding the victims of 9/11, are still responsible for around 50% of the total number of deaths due to extremism, even though Muslims only account for around 1% of the total U.S. population.

The only terrorists we need to fear are domestic white “Christian” men with easy access to guns. Vote Bernie - That is all. Enjoy your day.

The superintendent of the school system, Maria Libby, says the comment made by Piet Lammert is not indicative of the person or administrator he is. Still, the community says his post was just inappropriate.

The superintendent says she knows Lammert well and says the post was an error in judgement.

Libby says this situation isn't a matter of free speech. She says Lammert is an administrator and therefore should not post things of this nature.

“As superintendent, I have looked into the issue and am taking appropriate action,” Libby said. “As you know, I am unable to share the details because it is a personnel issue. I will say that I know Piet, and he is someone who genuinely accepts all people. The Five-Town CSD is committed to providing an atmosphere open to all students, families and staff and has a well-earned reputation for doing so.”

When reached Friday, Lammert said he posted an apology on his Facebook page that morning and would be sharing the statement in an email to parents.

I am writing to take responsibility and apologize for a post that I made on my private Facebook account yesterday. I mistakenly left my setting open to “Public” and in doing so made a post that offended some members of our community and beyond. I deeply regret doing so, take full responsibility, and hope that those I offended will accept my apology.

With true humility, I write to apologize for the offensive statement that I recently posted on Facebook. I did not intend this statement literally when I wrote it–it was an exaggeration–but soon after realized that it was unintentionally hurtful, offensive, and divisive at a time when more than ever we need compassion and understanding.

In short, I did not mean what I said and wish with all my heart that I could take it back. But I need to take responsibility for it nonetheless, because I wrote it. It does not represent who I am or what I believe, but I wrote it. This post is an effort to at least begin to make amends.

Had I simply written what I meant, the post would have reflected my urgent distress at the epidemic of mass violence in our country, which more recent events have proven to span all social groups. Ironically, in my effort to point out that we run the risk of simplifying the problem by singling out a particular ethnic group, I did exactly that to the group to which I belong. It was careless and rash.

Maria Libby, the superintendent of the school system, criticized the Facebook post but defended Lammert's character.

"He understands that he made a mistake and he has tried to take responsibility for that," Libby told FoxNews.com Tuesday -- though she added, "I don’t think that everyone in the community would say it’s resolved."

"I think that there are people in the community who are quite upset over the post and may not be happy unless that assistant principal is fired," she said.

Libby said the situation has been handled appropriately but did not provide details on what actions were taken. She said he will not be fired.

Holding his Bible, the two-term Republican governor opened the event by urging a revival to "begin right here, right here in our hearts." Later Saturday afternoon, he described his conversion to Christianity as a teenager.

"Today is about humbling ourselves before the Lord. Today we repent for our sins," he said. Later Jindal told attendees: "We can't just elect a candidate to fix our country ... We need a spiritual revival to fix our country."

The event drew protests outside the basketball arena where several hundred were gathered because of accusations that the American Family Association promotes discrimination against gays and is hostile to non-Christians. Jindal briefly referred to the protests in his appearance, asking the rally's attendees to pray for the demonstrators.

Otherwise, he stuck to his personal story, describing his seven-year path to Christianity as he paced the stage in jeans, a blazer, and a TED-speech style microphone headset. He spoke of a high school friend who had told him that he would be missed when the friend and his family went to heaven but Jindal did not. Jindal recalled a girl in high school who said she wanted to grow up to be a Supreme Court justice, so she could "save innocent human lives" from abortion. He spoke of a revelation as he watched a video about Jesus dying on the cross.

By hosting the event, Jindal was unable to attend a more prominent gathering of conservatives being held simultaneously in Iowa. The Iowa Freedom Summit drew a series of possible Republican presidential contenders, including Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker.

"Twenty-seven years ago, I came to Christ as a teenager right here at this campus at Chapel on the campus. It is amazing to me that 27 years later, I'd be able, as Governor, to invite people to come back and offer spiritual renewal and revival that we so desperately need in our state," Jindal said.

But members of LGBTQ communities from around the state, as well as LSU students and faculty, were not buying it, or anyway were not buying that the event should be held on the LSU campus.

The LSU Faculty Senate, in fact, passed a resolution opposing the prayer rally, in part because it was funded by the AFA, which it said was classified as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

The AFA, the resolution claimed, demonizes and makes false claims “about lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) people, Jews, Muslims, Hispanics, Native Americans and atheists.” The resolution said the event contridicted LSU’s mission “to use its extensive resources to solve economic, environmental and social challenges.”

Outside LSU’s Pete Maravich Assembly Center, about 400 LSU students, faculty and others peacefully demonstrated, calling for equality for gay people and lesbians, an end to education funding cuts, and unity among the races and religions. Despite the controversy and concern it spawned in the weeks leading up to Jindal’s much-discussed prayer rally, those who attended said they left the event feeling uplifted.

Shamaka Schumake, of Baton Rouge, was among the protestors outside the PMAC. She said she wanted to get involved in the protest because of what she sees as anti-Muslim and anti-gay rhetoric from AFA and others involved.

Though [Jindal] and others have stressed repeatedly that the prayer rally wasn’t political, the event offered Jindal another chance to court evangelicals and the Christian right as he weighs a run for president. Critics had accused him of putting on a political show, just days after his supporters launched a political action committee that would set up a financial framework if he decides to seek the GOP nomination.

He also spoke briefly to an anti-abortion rally at the outdoors Greek Theater on campus while the prayer rally was in progress nearby.

"If I do decide to run [for president] I think this country, I think our nation, needs leaders who have the courage to speak the truth to us. He noted that Louisiana has a law defining marriage as being between a man and a woman, and said that if the court handed down a ruling that invalidated it, he would urge lawmakers in Washington, D.C. to pass a constitutional amendment that allowed states to continue defining marriage.

U.S. District Court Judge Robert W. Gettleman ruled this week that Waubonsee Community College (WCC) in Sugar Grove, Illinois must allow Wayne Lela and John McCartney, of Heterosexuals Organized for a Moral Environment, to distribute flyers on campus.  WCC had barred the social activists' "politically incorrect" opinions because the speech was not "consistent with the philosophy, goals and mission of the college."

“Allowing plaintiffs to exercise their First Amendment rights on WCC’s campus does not amount to the college endorsing [the] plaintiff’s views or speech,” U.S. District Judge Robert Gettleman wrote in an opinion and order he issued this week. “In fact, as plaintiffs point out, the United States Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights has publicly stated that its policies should not be carried out in ways that impair First Amendment rights.”

Gettleman granted Lela and McCartney’s motion to preliminarily prevent WCC from denying them access to the campus for purposes of leafleting. [WCC] now must submit to the court on or before Monday a written proposal for a reasonable time, place and manner for leafleting, according to the order.

Gettleman on Wednesday is set to make a definitive preliminary injunction order. In response, Jim Sibley, WCC’s executive director of marketing and communications, wrote in an emailed statement: “While we await the court’s final determination, we consider this a matter of pending litigation. Waubonsee Community College remains committed to maintaining a nondiscriminatory campus that is not disruptive to our educational mission.”

Whitman Brisky and Noel Sterett of Chicago-based Mauck & Baker LLC are assisting The Rutherford Institute, a nonprofit civil liberties organization, in its defense of Lela and McCartney’s constitutional rights.

Wayne Lela and John McCartney, members of the group Heterosexuals Organized for a Moral Environment, filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court on July 16.

In the suit, Lela and McCartney are seeking to have Waubonsee Community College’s Use of College Facilities declared discriminatory and that it violates their free speech rights. The suit also seeks unspecified monetary damages.

According to the suit, Lela and McCartney contacted WCC administrators in early January seeking approval to pass out fliers titled “The Uncensored Truth About Homosexuality” and “Gay Activism and Freedom of Speech and Religion.” The fliers were sponsored by H.O.M.E.

In the lawsuit, Lela and McCartney claim that WCC’s Use of College Facilities and Services policy is discrimination because it “prohibits all speech which espouse views which WCC deems inconsistent and unfavorable with, or critical of, its philosophy, goals and mission, but not views that are consistent or favorable with its philosophy, goals and mission.”

Marquette Bans Conservative Prof, Like a Terrorist

The Catholic Jesuit Marquette University has suspended (with pay) 37-year Professor John McAdams and banned him from the campus "like a potential terrorist," he says, because he blogged criticism of pro-homosexual philosophy instructor Cheryl Abbate for her censoring a student who criticized the notion of homosexual "marriage."

McAdams, who teaches political science, was notified by email Tuesday that he was relieved of his duties until further notice and was not to come to campus without advance written permission from his dean.

The controversy apparently began with a post McAdams wrote in his Marquette Warrior blog Nov. 9 in which he criticized a graduate student teaching assistant for not allowing discussion of gay marriage in an ethics class.

A student challenged her decision after class and recorded the conversation. The student told teaching assistant Cheryl Abbate that it was his right as an American citizen to make arguments against gay marriage, and she replied: "You don't have a right in this class to make homophobic comments."

Associate Professor John McAdams' suspension with pay comes as Marquette University has begun requiring its faculty to attend anti-harassment training, where they are instructed to report any employee that speaks out in opposition to gay marriage.

"Although employees have free speech rights under the United States Constitution, in academic and other workplaces those rights are limited when they infringe upon another person's right to work in an environment free of unlawful harassment," the school's anti-harassment training video, produced by the Texas-based Workplace Answers, asserts.

"Abbate, of course, was just using a tactic typical among liberals now," McAdams wrote. "Opinions with which they disagree are not merely wrong, and are not to be argued against on their merits, but are deemed 'offensive' and need to be shut up."

Additionally in his blog post, McAdams criticized the school and deemed it "not a Catholic university" for not permitting discussion and debate on gay marriage in class.

Abbate explained that “some opinions are not appropriate, such as racist opinions, sexist opinions” and then went on to ask “do you know if anyone in your class is homosexual?” And further “don’t you think it would be offensive to them” if some student raised his hand and challenged gay marriage? The point being, apparently that any gay classmates should not be subjected to hearing any disagreement with their presumed policy views.

Then things deteriorated further as the student said that it was his right as an American citizen to make arguments against gay marriage. Abbate replied that “you don’t have a right in this class to make homophobic comments.”

She went on “In this class, homophobic comments, racist comments, will not be tolerated.” She then invited the student to drop the class.

. . . in the politically correct world of academia, one is supposed to assume that all victim groups think the same way as leftist professors.

Groups not favored by leftist professors, of course, can be freely attacked, and their views (or supposed views) ridiculed. Christians and Muslims are not allowed to be “offended” by pro-gay comments.

Calif. Univ. Fires Scientist for Being Christian

Scientist Mark Armitage stunned the scientific community last year when he published his discovery of soft tissue from the triceratops horn fossil that he had unearthed in 2012 in Montana -- thus proving that the dinosaurs roamed the earth thousands of years ago, rather than millions. While at the Hell Creek Formation excavation site in [Glendive,] Montana, researcher Mark Armitage discovered what he believed to be the largest triceratops horn ever unearthed at the site, according to attorney Brad Dacus of Pacific Justice Institute.

Upon examination of the horn under a high-powered microscope back at CSUN, Dacus says Armitage was “fascinated” to find soft tissue on the sample – a discovery Bacus said stunned members of the school’s biology department and even some students “because it indicates that dinosaurs roamed the earth only thousands of years in the past rather than going extinct 60 million years ago.”

Armitage’s findings were eventually published in July 2013 in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.

Scientists who study dinosaurs have long believed that triceratops existed some 68 million years ago and became extinct about 65 million years ago.

Armitage's finding, however, challenged that assertion. He argued the triceratops must be much younger or else those cells would have "decayed into nothingness," according to the July 22 lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court.

Armitage, a long-time microscope scientist who has some 30 published papers to his name, believes the bones are no more than 4,000 years old -- a hypothesis that supports his view that such dinosaurs roamed the Earth relatively recently and that the planet is young.

The discovery of soft tissue cells within dinosaur remains is controversial. When soft tissue was found in 2005 on the bones of a Tyrannosaurus rex -- believed to be 68 million years old -- researchers last November provided a physical explanation for it: iron within the dinosaur's body had preserved the tissue from decay.

. . . according to the lawsuit, the day that Armitage's paper was published online, February 12, 2013, Kwok called a secret meeting of other staff members, during which the decision was made to fire Armitage.

Several days later a manager in Armitage's department informed him that he was the target of a “witch hunt” and encouraged him to resign, according to the lawsuit. On February 27 [2013] Armitage was officially terminated from his employment.

According to the complaint, while Armitage had been in his position for over three years and was led to believe it was permanent, CSUN abruptly claimed his appointment was only temporary and that there was suddenly a lack of funding for his position.

Michael Peffer, a Pacific Justice Institute staff attorney who is assisting in the suit, said that it was “apparent that 'diversity' and 'intellectual curiosity,' so often touted as hallmarks of a university education, do not apply to those with a religious point of view. This suit was filed, in part, to vindicate those ideals.”

Armitage, who has some 30 publications to his credit and is past-president of the Southern California Society for Microscopy, was hired by the university in early 2010 to manage a wide variety of oversight duties for the biology department’s array of state-of-the-art microscopes, court documents state. He also trained students on how to use the complicated equipment.

[Armitage] published his findings, first in the November 2012 issue of American Laboratory magazine, which published images of the soft tissue on its cover, and then online in February 2013 in the peer-reviewed journal Acta Histochemica, according to the lawsuit.

“It is frustrating because I made no conclusions in the paper [alluding to creationism], I just presented the factual data,” Armitage had said. “The only conclusions I drew were that ‘This needs to be investigated further. We have a lot of work to do.’ And that was it.”

Indiana legislators are questioning the decision of Ball State University President Jo Ann Gora to ban professors from discussing a full range of scientific inquiry of the birth of the universe.

BSU spokesman Tony Proudfoot said the legislators apparently were referring to Honors 390A, “Dangerous Ideas,” which uses a book titled, “What is Your Dangerous Idea?”

One essay in the book is titled “Science Must Destroy Religion.” Proudfoot says other essays in the book include these titles: “Science May Be Running Out of Control,” “Science Will Never Silence God,” and “Religion is the Hope that is Missing in Science.”

The [legislators'] letter also expresses concerns about whether a faculty review panel appointed to investigate complaints against Hedin “was filled with persons with conflicts of interest, who were predisposed to be hostile to his viewpoint.”

The letter gives Gora until the end of business on March 24 to answer the following question: “Does the policy forbid science professors from explaining either their support or rejection of intelligent design in answer to student questions about intelligent design in class?”

. . . BSU has badly misrepresented the hard-to-miss anti-religious goals of the book, as well as the supposedly religion-friendly chapters it cites. Of those three chapters, one has nothing to do with religion and the other two are explicitly anti-religious.

First, some background. What Is Your Dangerous Idea? is framed, billed, and marketed as a book of ideas by leading new atheist-types. The intended readership seems to be intellectual atheists, as its cover advertises the fact that the introduction is by new atheist (and evolutionary psychologist) Steven Pinker, and the afterword is by leading new atheist Richard Dawkins.

Indeed, the man behind What Is Your Dangerous Idea?, who served as its editor, is John Brockman, has been called one of "the 25 most influential living atheists." He was the literary agent and main promoter of Dawkins's 2006 book The God Delusion (and other books by Dawkins). In the acknowledgments of The God Delusion, Dawkins thanks Brockman for his "help in the preparation of this book" and states that Brockman's "whole-hearted and enthusiastic belief in the book was very encouraging." (p. 6) . . .

To put it bluntly, What Is Your Dangerous Idea? is an unadulterated polemic against religion, especially traditional religion. . . .

Not one of those 108 essays in What Is Your Dangerous Idea? promotes the idea that traditional religion actually is true. . . .

According to 21-year-old Joan Short — a student at [nearby] Thomas Aquinas College and a member of the Christian pro-life group Survivors of the Abortion Holocaust — she, her 16-year-old sister Thrin, and 11 other Survivors had set up three large signs in an [authorized] area of campus heavy with foot traffic called the Arbor. The banners, along with literature the activists handed out, displayed graphic imagery of late-term abortions that Joan said was intended to “begin conversations” with passing students.

Joan said that at around 11 a.m., Dr. Mireille Miller-Young — an associate professor with UCSB’s Feminist Studies Department — approached the demonstration site and exchanged heated words with the group, taking issue with their pro-life proselytizing and use of disturbing photographs. Joan claimed Miller-Young, accompanied by a few of her students, led the gathering crowd in a chant of “Tear down the sign! Tear down the sign!” before grabbing one of the banners and walking with it across campus.

Joan said she called 9-1-1 and Thrin started filming, and that the pair followed Miller-Young and two of her students — who Joan referred to as “the fugitives” — into nearby South Hall. . . .

The pro-life group indicated that, despite the violence, neither Thrin nor Joan are deterred from leading future pro-life outreaches.

Joan says, “Yesterday we had a good day.  We passed out all of the literature we had, and had lots of conversations. We know babies are dying everyday so we will continue to peacefully and nonviolently speak the truth about abortion.  We know we will suffer insult and even violence as we did today but we will not waver from our nonviolent speech on behalf of the babies.”

A department of feminist studies professor has been accused of going berserk . . .

The professor at the heart of the controversy is Mireille Miller-Young, an associate professor whose area of emphasis is black cultural studies, pornography and sex work, according to her faculty webpage. She could not be reached for comment Tuesday by The College Fix.

According to [Kristina] Garza, when Miller-Young came across the prolife demonstration, the professor started yelling at the protestors, saying abortion is a woman’s right. Then things got uglier, as the scholar allegedly enticed about 15 students to begin shouting “tear down the sign, tear down the sign” at the group . . .

As the prolife demonstrators tried to engage students one-on-one in conversation during a lull in the chanting, that’s when Miller-Young allegedly grabbed one of their signs and stormed off, followed by two UCSB students, Garza said, adding Thrin followed the threesome with her older sister, Joan, in tow and calling 9-1-1.

. . . Professor Young’s mob dwindled after she stole the sign.  She paraded across the campus with two female students carrying the sign.  Joan and Thrin followed, Thrin video-taping and Joan on the phone with the police.

The parade weaved through two buildings and entered an elevator in the third.  Thrin attempted to get on the elevator with them, but Young blocked the doorway.  Thrin stuck her foot in the door, but Young pushed it out with her foot.  Tenaciously Thrin put it back.  This happened several times as Thrin pleaded with the students to not get involved. “The police are on their way,” she told them, “you don’t want to be with Professor Young.”

Suddenly Young reached out and pushed 16 year old Thrin. “Don’t touch me!”  Thrin cried, startled. Young’s long fingernails scratched Thrin’s arm.  Young pushed Thrin twice more and each time Thrin kept the door from closing with her arm.  Finally, Young got out of the elevator, and tried to pull Thrin away from the elevator door.  Thrin held onto the elevator with her other hand, the one holding the camera.  Realizing that students were trying to take the camera out of her hand, Thrin let go of the elevator.

The elevator doors closed.  Professor Young let go of Thrin, leaving several scratches on her arms, and got on another elevator.  Then the police arrived.

Price contradicted the prior testimony of Stanford sociologist Michael Rosenfeld, who last week said that children raised by same-sex parents suffer no disadvantage when compared with other kids, according to his research.

University of Texas sociologist Mark Regnerus testified for more than three hours as a witness for the state of Michigan, which is defending a ban on gay marriage. The constitutional amendment, approved by voters in 2004, is being challenged by two Detroit-area nurses [April DeBoer and Jayne Rowse] in a rare trial.

Regnerus was the leader of a study that screened thousands of people, ages 18 to 39, and found roughly 250 who said they grew up in a house where a mom or dad eventually had a same-sex relationship.

He found they were more likely to have problems — welfare dependence, less education, marijuana use — than young adults from stable families led by heterosexuals. But he later acknowledged that his study didn't include children raised by same-sex couples in a stable relationship.

[In a statement, University of Texas sociology department chairwoman Christine] Williams noted that Regnerus’ conclusions about same-sex parents had been similarly rejected by the 14,000-member American Sociological Association, which decreed that Regnerus’ research was “fundamentally flawed on conceptual and methodological grounds.”

Under cross-examination Tuesday, Regnerus stoically acknowledged the sting of his peers’ disavowal.

“It’s regrettable,” he said, looking like the last kid left standing against the schoolhouse wall after his classmates had chosen teams for a pick-up game. “I guess they just want to distance themselves from me.”

"Social Bullying in Nursing Academia," a new study co-authored by Professor Janice Beitz at the Rutgers School of Nursing-Camden, found that non-tenured females who teach undergraduates are subject to bullying by academic superiors, as well as peers.

According to Beitz, the bullying may stem from feeling threatened by a fellow academic's qualifications and scholarships. Perceived weakness was another reason for bullying to occur.

When individuals become educators in academia, they are more interested in teaching than being picked on. However, this unfortunate turn of events is exactly what happens in some colleges and universities, according to new research from a nursing scholar at Rutgers University-Camden.

In a study, professor Janice Beitz conducted interviews with 16 nursing professors at the school who also happened to be the victims of social bullying, according to a news release from the university. Part of Beitz's reasoning for conducting the study was due to the fact that she herself has been the victim of bullying in her career. The study and its findings are meant to raise awareness of a problem, the scale of which is still unknown.

Part of it is the unique nature of higher education. The tenure process is different than any other environment. Beitz is now working on a follow-up study on resilience and how victims are surviving when bullied. Additionally, since her bullying study does address the prevalence of bullying in nursing academia, Beitz hopes to cast a wider net and perform a quantitative study on the issue nationwide.

Florida Univ. Prof. Says Priests are Full of Crap

The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights has complained to the University of South Florida that professor of psychology, and behavior analyst, Timothy Weil would symbolically equate Catholic priests to a toilet bowl. In his defense, Weil said, “It seems the purpose of the exercise may have been missed.”

Prof. Weil's projection screen image showed a priest with a crucifix, an equal sign (=), and a toilet.  Awaiting an audience response for a meaning, someone yelled “They’re both full of shit,” to which, the professor repeated the profanity in agreement.

He asked them two questions: a) is the allegation true? and b) if it is, what exactly is going to be done about it? He has not heard back, which is why he is contacting the media. Below is an excerpt from his letter:

I taught sociology for 16 years at a college in Pittsburgh and served for 20 years on the board of the National Association of Scholars. I have also written two books on the First Amendment. I have great respect for academic freedom, but I also have great contempt for those who abuse it. There is obviously nothing of any academic value when someone gratuitously insults the adherents of any world religion. Whatever point Dr. Weil was trying to make could surely have been made without unnecessarily offending Catholic sensibilities.

. . . related to the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy is a photo display featured in the Nebraska Union’s Rotunda Gallery until Oct. 11. The display is a double feature with photos from Jeff Sheng’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and “Fearless” collections. The first collection features photos from closeted service members before the repeal of the policy in the armed forces that kept homosexuality in the military under wraps.

. . . The other exhibit displays photographs of closeted athletes who kept their sexuality hidden for fear of ridicule and rejection in their communities.

On Oct. 25, the third-annual Guys and Dolls Drag Show will take place at 7 p.m. in the union’s Centennial Room.

[Amy Vanderpool, a University of Nebraska educational psychology graduate student and the Graduate Assistant for the LGBT resource center said,] “It’s a fun, low-stress way to figure out if drag is for you,”

Roger Hines, a former Georgia state legislator and retired high school teacher, had choice words for the Kennesaw State University community in a Sunday newspaper column, calling the promotion of LGBT History Month "a slap in the face" to local citizens.

"No one who has lived in Georgia for six months could be in doubt about the state's predominant culture," Hines wrote. "We aren’t Washington state, and Atlanta isn’t San Francisco either, or not yet."

Hines chastised universities for accepting state funds, then supporting the gay community.

At issue is a great university [Kennesaw State University (KSU)] that was made great by supportive, local community leaders, the general citizenry, and thousands of tuition-paying students, many of whom will just have to endure the month of October. That university, instead of honoring the hand that has fed it, has taken a cultural stand that is anathema to those who foot its bills.

. . .

“T” is for transgender. This one makes me sad, because any way you cut it, it argues that God made a mistake. We should never be unkind to anyone who grapples with this issue, but neither should we allow a tax-supported university to tout or defend it.

“Q” is the most disturbing, not because it stands for queer, which it does, but because it also stands for “questioning.” In other words, if a 17- or 18-year-old freshman thinks his or her parents are so yesterday and has questions about his or her sexuality, KSU has answers. Or at least aid and comfort. KSU, that’s not why we have given you all these decades of support. Please get on with mathematics, history, your nursing program, etc.

. . . I will never believe that most Georgians approve of KSU or any of their other universities pressing or encouraging the gay agenda. But universities do it anyhow. It is the way of academia. They ply state legislators for funds and then foster such things as gay politics that neither state legislators nor their constituents approve of. This should cease.

Many [K-12] schools plan to incorporate LGBT History Month into lessons.

On Oct. 18, Equality Forum will feature “Tom of Finland,” who has a foundation promoting his explicit sex images, “erotic art galleries” and “artist and museum links” that include explicit nude images.

Also featured, on the 10th, will be “Patrick Califia,” born a woman and now described as a “bisexual transman.”

“It is deeply disturbing that the organizers of LGBT History Month think our kids should be celebrating homoerotic authors and porn producers,” stated Brad Dacus, president of Pacific Justice Institute. “This should be a serious wake-up call for anyone who still thinks gay history in schools is a good idea.”

PJI has warned parents to take immediate action to prevent their children from being blindsided this month by “explicit and highly objectionable material.”

Buffalo NY Univ. Charges Pro-life Students Extra $

The University at Buffalo (State University of New York) is hostile toward pro-lifers, according to two separate lawsuits filed in the past 30 days. This week, the University was sued for charging an exorbitant fee to UB Students for Life for holding an abortion debate, and earlier a lawsuit was filed by the Center for Bio-Ethical Reform for allowing pro-abortion activists to disrupt their rally, including a profanity-shouting professor (who was finally arrested).

'Alliance Defending Freedom,' an Arizona based religious-freedom legal group, has filed a federal lawsuit against the University at Buffalo [UB] for demanding a security fee of $650 to hold an abortion debate from a pro-life student group. Other student groups are not charged for similar events.

The legal group argues that the security fee policy violates the First Amendment because it gives college officials discretion to discriminate against speech based on its viewpoint.

David Hacker, [ADF] senior legal counsel, said that when 'UB Students for Life' reserved space for a debate on abortion in April, the university asked them to pay a fee for campus security because officials thought the event would be controversial. On the other hand, when another student group organized a religious debate on belief,  it wasn't asked to pay any security fee.

The debate on abortion was attended by approximately 225 people and caused no disturbance whatsoever.

UB Students for Life, an official student organization at the school since 2012, held a pro-life abortion debate on April 18 and were instructed by school officials to hire university police to attend the event since it involved “controversial” expression.  School officials later charged the group $649.63, or $150 more than the group’s entire annual Student Association funding even though one of the officers sat outside and read the newspaper.

“A public university is commonly known as the ‘marketplace of ideas,’” according to the 33-page lawsuit, which was filed Friday in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of New York. “That marketplace depends on free and vigorous debate between students — debate that is silenced when university policies regulate speech based on content and viewpoint and vest administrators with unbridled discretion to impose fees for the exercise of speech.”

“University officials cannot arbitrarily decide to deem an event ‘controversial’ and then weigh down students with burdensome fees to engage in constitutionally protected free speech,” Hacker said in a statement.

From "Pro-life group sues UB for allowing its demonstration to be disrupted" by Phil Fairbanks, News Staff Reporter, The Buffalo News 6/5/13

The group, in a suit filed in U.S. District Court in Buffalo, accuses UB of violating the free speech rights of pro-life advocates who organized a rally and display outside the student union in April.

The Center for Bio-Ethical Reform [CBR], the pro-life group that sponsored the event, said the suit is designed to prevent the university and its police from condoning future protests against pro-life supporters.

The group claims its rally, a university-approved event, was disrupted when pro-choice supporters showed up and began waving white sheets in front of the display and otherwise interfering with its pro-life message.

From "Pro-Abortion Activists Permitted to Disrupt Pro-Life Display at SUNY-Buffalo; Federal Lawsuit Filed" posted at American Freedom Law Center 6/4/13

. . . a federal civil rights lawsuit [was filed] in the United States District Court for the Western District of New York against several officials from the State University of New York at Buffalo (SUNY-Buffalo) for permitting an unruly mob of pro-abortion protestors to purposely disrupt a peaceful, pro-life demonstration on the university’s campus.

CBR and the student organization followed the university’s procedures to reserve a prime location outside of the Student Union for the pro-life display.  The request was initially met with resistance from university officials.  However, the pro-life organizers pointed out to the hostile officials that this location had been reserved in the past for student speech activity; therefore, to deny access to this forum for the pro-life display would violate the First Amendment.  The officials reluctantly approved the pro-lifers’ request.

During the first day (April 15th) of the GAP display, approximately 20 to 30 protestors gathered outside of the Student Union.  Initially, the protestors stayed approximately 20 feet away from the GAP signs, thereby allowing the pro-lifers to engage in their free speech activity without interference.  However, later in the day—and after observing the effectiveness of the abortion photo display—the protestors formed a barricade directly in front of the display, purposefully blocking the pro-life signs and thereby unlawfully interfering with the pro-lifers’ free speech activity.

The pro-lifers resumed the GAP display outside of the Student Union on April 16, 2013. . . . a larger group of protestors decided to form a solid row in front of the display to completely block the signs. . . .

Despite the clear violation of the pro-life demonstrators’ constitutional rights, the officers refused to stop the disruption, stating that they were under orders not to interfere with the pro-abortion protestors.  This order was confirmed by the Chief of Police, who remained at the scene with his arms folded, refusing to protect the pro-lifers’ constitutional right to free speech.
