Obama Knows America Opposes Gay Agenda

President Obama's 2012 campaign wants full support of homosexualists (including their money), but with polls showing that 62% of Americans define marriage as one man and one woman, the White House is trying to "ride the fence."

. . . Obama’s current position on gay marriage is untenable.

. . . Obama first declared that his position on gay marriage is evolving back in October, when he told gay advocates that he is wrestling with the issue, and that “attitudes evolve, including mine.”

Obama is set to attend a gay-themed fundraiser later this week in New York, a state where gay marriage is close to becoming legal, and he is certain to be pressed to clarify where his position now stands. He will be expected to give a better answer than his current one.

. . . Obama fundamentally believes in full equality for gays and lesbians. . . . [but] This circle won’t be closed until Obama takes the final step of supporting marriage equality.

From "Obama Believes Gay Marriage 'Best Addressed By The States': White House Official" by Sam Stein, Huffington Post 6/21/11

Monday afternoon, a White House official offered a slightly more concrete answer in an email statement to The Huffington Post.

Although the President believes that this is an issue best addressed by the states, he also firmly believes that committed gay and lesbian couples should receive equal protection under the law," the official said.

Respect for states' rights with regards to marriage is a position shared by many prominent officials and politicians, including Republicans like Dick Cheney. While it falls far short of a full-throated endorsement of same-sex marriage -- a gap that will keep LGBT activists rankled . . .
