Atheists Force 'Prayer Discount' Out of N.C. Diner

Once the Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation learned through social media that Mary’s Gourmet Diner in Winston-Salem, North Carolina was giving a 15% discount to customers who prayed prior to eating their meal, the atheist lawyers wrongly convinced the restaurant owners that such a discount is illegal, and so fearing a costly legal battle, the owners ended all discounts to everyone.

“We at Mary’s value the support of all of our fellow Americans. While you may exercise your right of religious freedom at this restaurant by praying over your meal to any entity or non-entity, we must protect your freedom from religion in a public place,” the note [on the diner door] read. “We are no longer issuing the 15% praying in public discount. It is illegal and we are being threatened by lawsuit. We apologize to our community for any offense this discount has incurred.”

Despite being around for years, the discount made national headlines last week after a photo of the discounted receipt when viral on Facebook.

Jordan Smith shared the photo on an Orlando Christian radio station’s Facebook page and it quickly received thousands of likes.

Laurie Gaylor, co-president of the atheist group, said in a statement she’s glad the diner took action to drop the discount.

"We have done away with the discount and Mary and her daughter Shama are very saddened by this, this is a gift that we gave to our customers - this is a gift that has been taken from us," the manager said. "The gift of giving is just as important as receiving the gift. These individuals are very hurt, but it has made our community stronger. There's always good things that come out of the bad, and unfortunately, we will see it in time, but we are not seeing it yet."

"There is a lot of evil in this world, and we encourage people to still come in and take a moment before the food to really be appreciative of what they have and to separate themselves from all the madness in the world," the manager added. "All the disease that's coming into the U.S. and from all the war and the madness that's going on overseas as well. All Americans are very stressed about the economy and the way things are going, but we have things to be thankful for and we like to give thanks regardless of a discount or not."

. . . More than one diner at Mary’s Gourmet Diner on Thursday said they were there to support the restaurant after its namesake owner, Mary Haglund, found herself in the middle of an Internet-driven controversy over the discounts.

Some came to eat and made sure to offer a prayer. Some said they were not particularly religious but wanted to show their support for the “attitude of gratitude” that Haglund said was behind the discounts – now discontinued.

Haglund’s restaurant has been offering the discounts more or less randomly for years . . .

A co-owner of Mary’s Gourmet Diner said that it is possible the restaurant may fight back after being told by an advocacy group that it can’t give people discounts for praying in public before eating their meals.

Shama Blalock, who with Mary Haglund owns the restaurant in downtown Winston-Salem, said that offers have been coming in to fight any legal challenge the restaurant might face in continuing to offer the discount. Blalock is Haglund’s daughter.

Blalock didn’t identify those who are promising help, but said that if they convince Haglund that the practice isn’t illegal the restaurant could bring back the prayer discount.

Arizona Court: 'Pregnant Man' Can Divorce 'Wife'

The Arizona Court of Appeals ruled that an Arizona mother of several children, who lives as a bearded man after having her breasts removed, is free to divorce the co-mother of three of her children, whom she "married" in Hawaii — now desiring to marry a third woman — despite the Arizona constitutional amendment defining marriage as between one person with male DNA and another person with female DNA.

These days, "you can't tell the players without a scorecard."

[Thomas] Beatie, 40, was born female, but in 1997, he began testing to determine his psychological gender, and in 2002 underwent the first of his gender-reassignment surgeries. Under Hawaiian law, he was able to have his birth certificate amended and be legally recognized as male. He subsequently married.

Because his wife was unable to conceive children, and because Beatie still had female reproductive organs, he was artificially inseminated and became pregnant.

Then he hit the talk-show and tabloid circuit as the "The Pregnant Man," posing with his manly beard and chest and his very pregnant belly. He gave birth to his first child in 2008 and had two more by 2011.

But in March 2013, Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Douglas Gerlach ruled that Beatie's marriage was between two females because Beatie had given birth. Same-sex marriage is illegal in Arizona.

Thomas obtained an amended birth certificate after getting what Hawaii required: an affidavit from a doctor testifying that psychological and medical testing determined his “true gender” to be male. He also went through some surgery to change his appearance.

In an unusual decision, the judges said the only relevant fact for an Arizona judge to consider is whether the state that solemnized the marriage recognized the spouse as male.

Judge Kenton Jones, writing for the unanimous appellate court, said it would be a constitutional violation for Arizona to fail to accept Hawaii’s decision this was a heterosexual couple.

But the court made it clear that it was not saying that same-sex couples legally married elsewhere could seek a divorce in Arizona.

The Arizona Court of Appeals echoed the arguments made in Transgender Law Center’s amicus brief that because “the right to have children is a liberty interest afforded special constitutional protection”—“one of the basic civil rights of man”—it would not interpret the Arizona or Hawaii gender-change statute as “prohibit[ing] giving birth as a prerequisite to gender redesignation.” The court also held that to deny Thomas Beatie legal recognition as male “would run afoul of the equal protection clause of the U.S. Constitution.”

“Divorce is hard enough as it is. Nobody expects the government to contest it. After two and a half long years, I’ve finally been legally vindicated and validated not only as a husband, father, and a man, but as a human being,” said Beatie. “Hopefully now, other transgender people in Arizona and throughout the country don’t have to live in fear of their marriages, families, and identities being challenged and disrespected just because of who they are.”

When researchers ask those pastors what else they are willing to do to get their people active in the political process, Barna said "it's almost nothing."

"There are five factors that the vast majority of pastors turn to [when asked the question of what defines success]," [Barna] explained. "Attendance, giving, number of programs, number of staff, and square footage.

"What I'm suggesting is [those pastors] won't probably get involved in politics because it's very controversial. Controversy keeps people from being in the seats, controversy keeps people from giving money, from attending programs.

In a letter sent via email to Superintendent of Hall County Schools Will Schofield, the AHA says that they "have been informed that the school’s football coaches have been using their position to promote Christianity on the football team by integrating Bible verses into functional team documents and team promotions in various ways."

The letter was also sent to Board of Education Chairman Nath Morris and CHS Principal Suzanne Jarrard.

[AHA attorney Monica] Miller said the complaint came from a "concerned citizen," but she said that person has asked to remain anonymous.

Schofield said religious verses may be used in schools in certain contexts.

“There certainly is no legal precedent that you can’t use a verse ... that does not promote a particular religion,” he said.

[AHA attorney Monica] Miller said that, if there is a lawsuit, the center will seek an injunction ordering the school to cease the activity and a declaration that the practices are unconstitutional. She said the center would also seek attorney’s fees, which could amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The Alliance Defending Freedom handbook, which is distributed at schools by groups including the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, also addresses the issue of coaches leading prayer at games.

Students, however, have the right to pray together during school events, as long as the activity is initiated and led by students, not faculty. Teachers also have the right to engage in religious practices with one another when students are not there, according to the handbook.

“Teachers might not be leading prayers with their students, but teachers and other employees do have the right to live out their faith in a variety of ways,” Schofield said. “There’s an awful lot of areas where there really aren’t any clear, definitive answers. ... Probably the most important thing is the almost unlimited rights of students.”

Schofield said students have the right to pray, read religious materials, form religious clubs and otherwise express their religious beliefs.

Natural Marriage IS Constitutional: Tenn. Judge

With little fanfare, and almost no media coverage, Judge Russell Simmons ruled last week that the Tennessee constitutional amendment defining one-man-one-woman marriage, which was passed by 81% of the voters in 2006, does NOT violate the U.S. Constitution.  This court case involved a challenge to the amendment by Frederick Michael Borman and Larry Kevin Pyles-Borman, two men who were "married" in Iowa, but who wanted to get divorced in Tennessee, where they live.

“… neither the Federal Government nor another state should be allowed to dictate to Tennessee what has traditionally been a state’s responsibility. … Marriage simply cannot be divorced from its traditional procreative purposes. … The promotion of family continuity and stability is certainly a legitimate state interest.”

More than two dozen federal and state court rulings since the Supreme Court’s United States v. Windsor decision in June 2013 have successfully challenged and/or nullified bans. Simmons’ ruling rejects both a claim of discrimination and a claim that the Constitution’s Full Faith and Credit Clause forces the state to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states.

“The Supreme Court does not go the final step and find that a state that defines marriage as a union of one man and one woman is unconstitutional,” Simmons wrote. “Further, the Supreme Court does not find that one state’s refusal to accept another state’s valid same-sex marriage to be in violation of the U.S. Constitution.”

Simmons’ ruling only formally addressed and upheld the part of Tennessee’s ban that doesn’t recognize pre-existing same-sex marriages from other states, though this aspect is now being reviewed by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.

In his decision, Simmons cited the 1972 case Baker v. Nelson, a lesser known decision by the Minnesota Supreme Court, arguing that gay marriage is not a fundamental right.

"Baker holds that a state's law on same-sex marriage does not violate the equal protection or substantive due process rights under the United States Constitution," wrote Simmons in his memorandum opinion.

"Although the United States Supreme Court has had opportunities to overrule the Baker decision, it has refused to take that position even in the decision on which the plaintiff relies, which is United States v. Windsor."

Although Judge Simmons’s decision was limited to cases involving a divorce when the marriage itself is not recognized, he ruled in sweeping terms.  He relied in part upon the Supreme Court’s summary decision in 1972 rejecting a constitutional challenge to a Minnesota ban, concluding that the Justices have never abandoned that ruling.

To the argument that more recent gay rights decisions have undercut that precedent, the Tennessee judge responded that the issue should more properly be raised in an appellate court with broader authority than that of a trial judge.

Besides rejecting a challenge to the Tennessee ban based on a claim of illegal discrimination, Judge Simmons turned aside an argument that the Constitution’s Full Faith and Credit Clause required Tennessee to recognize a same-sex marriage performed in another state.

A recent nationwide Gallup poll found that the vast majority of self-identified lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Americans rarely, if ever, go to church and most say that religion is not important to them or even a part of their lives.

LGBT adults in the U.S. are considerably more likely to identify as non-religious than their non-LGBT counterparts, Gallup found in an August 2014 survey. Forty-seven percent of LGBT adults say they are non-religious, compared to 30 percent of non-LGBT adults, and the difference only increases between LGBT women and non-LGBT women -- 46 percent to 25 percent, respectively.

A new poll shows that 62% of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT)  Americans “seldom/never” attend a religious service; 51% say religion is not important in their daily lives; and 47% say they are “not religious” at all.

When asked about their religiosity, only 24% of LGBT Americans said they were “highly religious” compared with 41% of non-LGBT people, and 47% of the LGBT’s said they were “not religious,” compared to 30% of non-LGBT Americans.

When asked about religious service attendance, only 26% of LGBT’s said they attended “at least once a week/almost every week”; 11% said “about once a month”; and 62% said “seldom/never.”

For contrast, 42% of non-LGBT’s said they went to church “at least once a week/almost every week.” In addition, only 44% of non-LGBT’s said they “seldom/never” attend a religious service.

These results are based on more than 104,000 Gallup Daily tracking interviews conducted between Jan. 2 and July 31, 2014, including 3,242 adults who identified themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender.

There are a number of possible explanations for the lower level of religiosity among the U.S. LGBT population. LGBT individuals may feel less welcome in many congregations whose church doctrine, church policy, or ministers or parishioners condemn same-sex relations, and for the same reasons may be less likely to adopt religion into their own daily lives and beliefs.

Other possible explanations have to do less with church doctrine and more with the demographics of the LGBT population. LGBT individuals may be more likely to live in areas and cities where religion and religious service attendance are less common, and may adopt the practices of those with whom they share geography.

Abortion Advocate Extinction: They Don't Procreate

A prestigious study from Northwestern University comparing the birth rates of abortion advocates to the rest of Americans concludes that the shift in public opinion from pro-choice to pro-life since Roe v. Wade is the result of a demographic shift:  Pro-abortion women don't have as many children, or perhaps none. (dah!)

Although prochoice views became more common from the 1960s through the 1980s, the trend seems to have reached a plateau and maybe even reversed in the last two decades, especially among the younger generation, despite liberalizing attitudes towards other social issues. Sociologists at Northwestern University are proposing that this is at least partly the result of prochoice individuals having fewer offspring, which, given that offspring tend to adopt their parents’ attitudes, leaves fewer prochoice individuals in the next generation.

Using the General Social Survey, we consider the relationship between population demographic trends and trends in abortion attitudes. After an initial period of liberalizing attitudes, the United States population’s attitudes toward abortion have been mostly stable over the past two decades, or even more conservative. Cohort replacement explains most of this pattern, and our paper explores the role of differential fertility in changes in how population support for abortion rights has been affected by cohort replacement. Opponents of abortion rights maintain considerably higher fertility than their pro-choice counterparts, and elsewhere abortion attitudes have been shown to have a high parent child correlation. We apply these two pieces of evidence to help explain the mitigation of the upward trend toward pro-choice beliefs in GSS data from 1976-2010. We also find evidence that fertility differential between pro-life and pro-choice individuals has grown, despite declining fertility for both groups. We are currently working to quantify more precisely how strong the force of differential fertility is on abortion attitudes, and what kinds of population dynamics may amplify or attenuate its effects.

. . . Over the 34 years of GSS data, “pro-life” individuals have had on average 27% more children than “pro-choice” individuals over the past 34 years. This cannot be explained simply by a broader trend toward higher fertility among those who are more politically conservative . . .

. . . Further investigation indicates that not only are abortion attitudes associated with fertility associated with abortion attitudes, but in proportional terms—which is what matters for cultural evolution—the gap is widening. Fertility has declined for both groups over the past 30 years, but fertility has declined far less markedly for pro life individuals. . . .

Superintendent Jim Morris at the Fremont (California) Unified School District said the faculty unanimously insisted that a new college-level textbook replace the decade-old textbook that didn't include the latest kinky sex training for the school's 14- and 15-year-olds. However, thousands of local parents insisting on their approval also, want the $204,600 book purchase trashed.

The media have provided extensive interviews with only one parent supporting the book, Becky Bruno, who is presented as the parent of a junior high boy, but the fact that she is a teacher in the district is not disclosed.

The book, titled “Your Health Today” is almost 400 pages long and among the subject includes information on bondage, orgasms, vibrators, along with explicit drawings and diagrams.

The text also describes how to buy and use condoms and addresses masturbation, binge-drinking and shows sex organs in various stages of arousal.

Students are even agreeing that the book may be going over the line.

“I don’t think we really need to know about that at this age,” said Judy Le, a senior at Kennedy High School. “I feel like it’s more of like, adults.”

Fremont is the only school district in California using the book.

Teri Topham, whose daughter is going into ninth grade in Fremont and who teaches high school at a Fremont charter school, said she would throw the book out.

"I flipped through it and saw sections that mentioned bondage with ropes and handcuffs," Topham said. "Not only does it have material that is too explicit and inappropriate, it doesn't meet their need for their ages. I am astounded the health teachers and school board said, 'yes, this is the best book we could find.'"

"There's a section that tells you how to talk to your prospective partners about your sexual history," said Asfia Ahmed, a parent and school district employee who said she may sue the district if it does not remove the book. "How does that relate to a 14-year-old kid? I don't see it at all."

"But I am a very liberal person, and, in spite of that, I still find the book shocking," Ahmed said.

Parents organizing the petition have called for the college-level book to be removed from all Fremont schools and are asking for the formation of a Health Textbook Selection Committee.

A petition signer identified as Thomas Lo wrote: "In a city with diverse ethnicity and religions it is highly advisable to have a committee with broad representation to review the textbooks on sex education before they are allowed to use. This is the only way to avoid dispute later that tarnishes the Board of Education's reputation."

In a statement released Friday, Superintendent Jim Morris recommended that the Board of Education shelve the implementation of the book, "Your Health Today," until parents' concerns could be further examined.

The district said it had been in contact with the book's publisher, McGraw Hill, and was exploring the possibility of modifying the text to both meet students' needs and address parents' concerns.

"Administration and staff believes the textbook will be an asset to our health curriculum in that it provides the current, accurate, factual and relevant information our students need to make responsible decisions about their health," Morris said in a statement.

In the interim, the district will go back to the textbook it used last year, pending approval from the board.

“I was just astounded,” says Fremont mom Teri Topham. “My daughter is 13. She needs to know how boys feel. I frankly don’t want her debating with other 13-year-olds how well the adult film industry is practicing safe sex.” Another parent, Asfia Ahmed, who has eight and ninth grade boys, adds: “It assumes the audience is already drinking alcohol, already doing drugs, already have multiple sexual partners…Even if they are experimenting at this age, it says atypical sexual behaviors are normal.”

“I think denying that [sex] is part of our culture in 2014 is really not serving our kids well,” says Lara Calvert-York, president of the Fremont school board, who argues that kids are already seeing hyper-sexualized content—on after school TV. “So, let’s have a frank conversation about what these things are if that’s what the kids need to talk about,” she says. “And let’s do it in classroom setting, with highly qualified, credentialed teachers, who know how to have those conversations. Because a lot of parents don’t know how to have that conversation when they’re sitting next to their kids and it comes up in a TV show. Everyone is feeling a little awkward.”

But the Fremont parents aren’t budging. “Any good parent monitors what their child has access to,” says Topham. “We don’t say, ‘they’re going to drink anyway, let’s give them a car with bigger airbags.’” . . .

That followed a recent recommendation by the Liberian Council of Churches, which said in a statement last week the outbreak has Biblical implications. “God is angry with Liberia,” the religious leaders said, according to the Daily Observer. “Ebola is a plague. Liberians have to pray and seek God’s forgiveness over the corruption and immoral acts (such as homosexualism, etc.) that continue to penetrate our society. As Christians, we must repent and seek God’s forgiveness.”

The meeting was called by Archbishop Jonathan B.B. Hart, President of the LCC, who was also recently elected and enthroned Archbishop of the Internal Province of West Africa.

At the meeting were mainstream church leaders such as Archbishop of the Catholic Church of Liberia, Lewis Zeiglier, first vice president of the LCC, Rt. Reverend Dr. Kortu Brown, as well as representatives of other Christian associations with whom the LCC collaborated in organizing the meeting.

The Pentecostal Fellowship Union of Liberia, Liberia Fellowship of Full Gospel Ministers, Association of Evangelicals of Liberia, Prophetic Call to Ministers, Christian Community in Liberia, Apostolic World Christian Fellowship, were all represented.

Coordinator of Dublin Girls Run Tammy Brantley says on July 22 a security guard ended the woman's fitness and wellness group that day, saying it was against policy for them to pray inside the mall.

The coordinator says the group takes no more than three minutes before and after a walk to say a pray.

Concerned Christian, and Army veteran Brandon Berry learned about the incident from his pastor one Sunday.

The concerned Christian prompted the Mayor of Dublin to step in and grant his group a permit to hold a payer gathering as a result of this incident.

Berry says more than 10 churches of several faiths are expected to attend.

John Engler, vice president of MCK [McKnight Properties in Augusta], released the following statement:

"The Dublin Mall over the last week has been the subject of conversation throughout the community. Through meeting with some of the various people involved, some of the stories have merit while others have gone off the deep end and due to the sensitive issue have publically hampered the Dublin Mall. The Mall first and foremost has no issues or objection whatsoever with anyone of any religion denomination privately and quietly praying over there food before they eat or showing devotion towards their religion of choice provided it does not impose itself on others or take away from the overall shopping experience."

That explanation is not cutting it for some people in Dublin.

The issue prompted the creation of a Facebook page called "Power Display of Prayer." The group successfully got a permit from the city to hold a prayer rally outside of the mall from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Abortion Advocates No Longer 'Pro-choice'

In the 1970s, those advocating legalization of abortion freely used the word "abortion," but once Americans began to fully understand "pregnancy termination," the label "pro-choice" was invented, and then "reproductive rights" -- all to avoid being labeled "pro-abortion." Now, Planned Parenthood says that they're dropping their self-anointed label "pro-choice" in favor of the label "advocates for women's health."

But by 2010 some abortion-rights activists began to sense in their outreach to young women, whose support was needed not only for the midterm elections but for the movement’s future as well, that the term pro-choice was virtually meaningless. That was confirmed by postelection polls and focus groups that women’s organizations and Democrats commissioned to understand what went wrong.

. . . The issue isn't that "pro-choice" is no longer sufficient. It's that "pro-choice" was never sufficient for many . . . women of color fighting not just for "choice," but for full reproductive justice.

And there's good reason for that fight. The concept of "choice" speaks only to those who had (and have) the ability to make and exercise choices in the first place.

We at Planned Parenthood recognize that organizations and leaders of color made this shift decades before we began to doubt the capacity of the "pro-choice" label to fully represent the dreams of our movement.

Pregnancy and childbearing have been experienced quite differently by women of various races and economic classes. White married women with economic privilege, who have been able to prevent or terminate unintended pregnancies, indeed have been able to "choose" abortion since it became legal in 1973 with Roe v. Wade. However, historically women of color have not had choices because the ability to control their bodies and reproduction was stolen from them. Racist policies and attitudes have obstructed the ability of women of color to choose whether and when to bear children.

. . . an actual pro-choice person would want women to see ultrasounds before they decide to have an abortion or to have access to all the information they could on what abortion is, how it affects the women on a physical, mental and spiritual level. Logically, the term pro-choice just doesn’t make sense.

The abortion lobby wants to use terms like “women’s health” instead to promote abortion. But women’s health isn’t about abortion. Please. Any woman is going to see through that façade.

Women’s health isn’t about abortion – it’s about mammograms (which Planned Parenthood doesn’t do), well visits, making sure women are eating healthy and taking care of themselves so they can take care of their families, mental well-being, work-life balance, and other things that yes, deal with reproduction, but also deal with the impressive body and inner workings of being a woman. The “right” to end the life of her child doesn’t encompass “women’s health.”

While at the Hell Creek Formation excavation site in [Glendive,] Montana, researcher Mark Armitage discovered what he believed to be the largest triceratops horn ever unearthed at the site, according to attorney Brad Dacus of Pacific Justice Institute.

Upon examination of the horn under a high-powered microscope back at CSUN, Dacus says Armitage was “fascinated” to find soft tissue on the sample – a discovery Bacus said stunned members of the school’s biology department and even some students “because it indicates that dinosaurs roamed the earth only thousands of years in the past rather than going extinct 60 million years ago.”

Armitage’s findings were eventually published in July 2013 in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.

Scientists who study dinosaurs have long believed that triceratops existed some 68 million years ago and became extinct about 65 million years ago.

Armitage's finding, however, challenged that assertion. He argued the triceratops must be much younger or else those cells would have "decayed into nothingness," according to the July 22 lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court.

Armitage, a long-time microscope scientist who has some 30 published papers to his name, believes the bones are no more than 4,000 years old -- a hypothesis that supports his view that such dinosaurs roamed the Earth relatively recently and that the planet is young.

The discovery of soft tissue cells within dinosaur remains is controversial. When soft tissue was found in 2005 on the bones of a Tyrannosaurus rex -- believed to be 68 million years old -- researchers last November provided a physical explanation for it: iron within the dinosaur's body had preserved the tissue from decay.

. . . according to the lawsuit, the day that Armitage's paper was published online, February 12, 2013, Kwok called a secret meeting of other staff members, during which the decision was made to fire Armitage.

Several days later a manager in Armitage's department informed him that he was the target of a “witch hunt” and encouraged him to resign, according to the lawsuit. On February 27 [2013] Armitage was officially terminated from his employment.

According to the complaint, while Armitage had been in his position for over three years and was led to believe it was permanent, CSUN abruptly claimed his appointment was only temporary and that there was suddenly a lack of funding for his position.

Michael Peffer, a Pacific Justice Institute staff attorney who is assisting in the suit, said that it was “apparent that 'diversity' and 'intellectual curiosity,' so often touted as hallmarks of a university education, do not apply to those with a religious point of view. This suit was filed, in part, to vindicate those ideals.”

Armitage, who has some 30 publications to his credit and is past-president of the Southern California Society for Microscopy, was hired by the university in early 2010 to manage a wide variety of oversight duties for the biology department’s array of state-of-the-art microscopes, court documents state. He also trained students on how to use the complicated equipment.

[Armitage] published his findings, first in the November 2012 issue of American Laboratory magazine, which published images of the soft tissue on its cover, and then online in February 2013 in the peer-reviewed journal Acta Histochemica, according to the lawsuit.

“It is frustrating because I made no conclusions in the paper [alluding to creationism], I just presented the factual data,” Armitage had said. “The only conclusions I drew were that ‘This needs to be investigated further. We have a lot of work to do.’ And that was it.”

A new study out of Seattle suggests that the birth control pill could be linked to an increased risk for breast cancer. Scientists from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and their colleagues have found evidence that women who recently used birth control containing high-dose estrogen showed an increased risk for breast cancer.

The breast cancer data, published today in Cancer Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research, concludes that recent oral contraceptive use increased breast cancer risk by 50 percent, compared with never or former use. The results suggested that this risk may vary by the level of estrogen in the pill and other pill formulations. Women who took low-dose estrogen birth control within the past year were not found to be at a higher breast cancer risk.

For the study, Harvard researchers analyzed data from more than 49,400 American men who were followed for 24 years, starting in 1986. During that time, 6,023 cases of prostate cancer were diagnosed among the men, including 811 fatal cases.

The 25 percent of the men in the study who'd had a vasectomy had a 10 percent increased risk of developing prostate cancer, according to the study published online July 7 in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

Vasectomy was not linked with an increased risk of low-grade prostate cancer. But it was associated with a 20 percent higher risk of advanced prostate cancer and a 19 percent greater risk of fatal prostate cancer, respectively, the study authors said.

Even among men who had regular prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening tests for prostate cancer, those who had a vasectomy were 56 percent more likely to develop fatal prostate cancer. This link was strongest among men who had a vasectomy at a younger age.

Numerous studies have suggested that birth control pills increase the risk of breast cancer. Now, a new study suggests that this increased risk may only apply to recent users and is dependent on the formulation of the pill.

The research team, including Elisabeth F. Beaber of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, WA, recently published their findings in the journal Cancer Research.

In this latest study, the team set out to see whether increased breast cancer risk could be attributed to certain types of man-made female hormones.

"Oral contraceptive formulations have changed over time in the US, and contemporary formulations have received relatively less scrutiny with respect to breast cancer risk," Beaber told us.

In the study, the researchers concluded that the potential increase in the risk for breast cancer varied, depending on the types of birth control pills that the women used. The use of high-dose estrogen pills was related to a 2.7-fold increase in breast cancer risk, and the use of moderate-dose estrogen was linked to a 1.6-fold increase. Pills containing ethynodiol diacetate were related to a 2.6-fold higher risk. Triphasic combination pills containing an average of 0.75 milligrams of norethindrone increased the risk 3.1-fold.

"Our results suggest that use of contemporary oral contraceptives [birth control pills] in the past year is associated with an increased breast cancer risk relative to never or former oral contraceptive use, and that this risk may vary by oral contraceptive formulation," study author Elisabeth F. Beaber, a staff scientist in the Public Health Sciences Division of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington, said in a statement.

In the study, researchers examined health records and oral contraceptive use in 1,102 women ages 20 to 49 years diagnosed with breast cancer and 21,952 women without breast cancer in the same age group. . . .

Time since vasectomy and age at vasectomy had no effect on the risk for prostate cancer. "The cancers that were observed were also considered more clinically significant, such as those that are high grade or lethal," [researcher] noted.

. . . the researchers attempted to account for possible biologic mechanisms underlying the association between vasectomy and lethal prostate cancer. They looked at differences in sex hormone levels, sexually transmitted infections, and cancer treatment.

Although the researchers looked for mechanistic relation, they could not find one.

Vasectomy is a common form of contraception; the prevalence is about 15% in the United States.
