Too Many Minority Babies, Feds Say of Teen Births

Although the rate of abortion among minorities is disproportionately high compared to white Americans, in a new report, President Obama's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is lamenting that too many black and Hispanic babies are surviving teenage pregnancies.
“Despite this historic progress, profound disparities remain.”

The Hispanic teen birth rate fell by half over about eight years, and the black teen birth rate dropped nearly that much. But even with those declines, the white teen birth rate is still only half as high, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Thursday.

. . . in the new report, the CDC focused on 2006 through 2014 — the most recent phase of the decline, when the fall was steepest.

The recent drops in the black and Hispanic teen birth rates look more dramatic in part because they started at far higher rate, Albert said. The Hispanic rate fell 51 percent — from 77 to 38 births per 1,000 Hispanic girls ages 15 to 19. The black rate fell 44 percent — from 62 to 35 per 1,000.

The white rate fell 35 percent, from 27 to 17 per 1,000.

The birth rate among teenagers in the United States has fallen to a historic low, with births by black and Hispanic teens down by nearly half over the past decade, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on Thursday.

But officials said the U.S. teen birth rate was still too high, especially for minorities, and more work was needed.

"While reasons for the declines are not clear, teens seem to be less sexually active, and more of those who are sexually active seem to be using birth control than in previous years," the CDC said.

"The United States has made remarkable progress in reducing both teen pregnancy and racial and ethnic differences, but the reality is, too many American teens are still having babies," CDC Director Tom Frieden said in a statement.

From "Teen birthrate hits all-time low, led by 50 percent decline among Hispanics and blacks" by Ariana Eunjung Cha, Washington Post 4/28/16

The first [speculated cause for the drop in teen birthrate] is the most important and may be obvious: Today's teens enjoy better access to contraception and more convenient contraception than their predecessors, and more of them are taking advantage of innovations like long-acting injectable and implantable methods [LARC] that can last years over a daily birth control pill. But the second cause is something that goes against the conventional wisdom. It's that teens -- despite their portrayal in popular TV and movies as uninhibited and acting only on hormones -- are having less sex.

Veronica Gomez-Lobo, director of pediatric gynecology at Children’s National Medical Center, said the trend of abstinence has been mostly among younger teens rather than older ones. While there's not good data on why this is happening, she thinks of it as a “contagion” factor. So many teens are waiting to have sex, she suggests, that the peer pressure goes the opposite way than it might have in the past.

“We think this is a very healthy trend,” Gomez-Lobo said.

Failed Sexual Utopia Plagued by Rampant Disease

President Obama's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is reporting record high new cases of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), thus demonstrating complete failure of health agencies and government schools for a safe sexual revolution.
“We need to do a better job of giving our young people the skills and knowledge they need to protect their own health.  It’s important to teach students about healthy relationships and how to reduce sexual risk before they start to have sex.”
-- Dr. Jonathan Mermin, director of CDC’s National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and Tuberculosis Prevention
One simple fact is being ignored:  STDs could be eradicated via simple moral, monogamous marriages.

The CDC’s new report shows STD like chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis increased dramatically in 2014 [the latest year tabulated].

In 2014, 1.4 million cases of chlamydia were reported to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention a 2.8 percent increase since 2013. This is the highest number of cases of any STD ever reported to the CDC, the government researchers said in the annual report.

In 2014, there were just over 350,000 reported cases of gonorrhea — a rate of nearly 111 per 100,000 people. In addition, there were 20,000 reported cases of syphilis — a rate of about 6 per 100,000, the report said.

The most vulnerable populations, particularly young people, women and gay and bisexual men, continue to be hardest hit . . . men who have sex with men accounts for 90 percent of new cases of primary and secondary syphilis.

The number of US cases stayed relatively stable [yet high] from 2010 until 2014, when the figures started to creep up. Health officials say there’s no obvious explanation for why, although rates of other sexually transmitted diseases are increasing, too.

Health officials say they are eyeing a handful of reasons, including increasing PrEP use among men who have sex with men. PrEP, or pre-exposure prophylaxis, is a pill taken daily to prevent HIV infection in people who are at risk of getting the virus. Officials are concerned that people taking PrEP might not realize it doesn’t protect against other STDs, and engage in sexual activity that puts them at greater risk for contracting infections like syphilis.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention runs a program to dole out grants to state and local programs to provide their citizens with STD prevention resources. . . .

In the U.S., April is STD Awareness Month . . .

Prevention is the key when it comes to avoiding an STD. That means, having safe sex (using a condom) and having open discussions with your partner about their sexual history and whether they have had or currently have an STD.

. . . You can lower pelvic inflammatory disease risk factors by being in a long-term monogamous relationship with a person who has been negatively tested for STD, and using latex condoms correctly.

From "U.S. Schools are backward on Proper Sex Education, CDC wants improving" posted at Daily Star Gazette 4/13/16

The findings, released by the CDC, mean that many students are not receiving critical health and safety information on topics like HIV, STDs, and pregnancy prevention. . . .

The report is based on CDC’s 2014 School Health Profiles, which surveys schools across the country on whether or not they teach all 16 recommended sexual health education topics, as well as other major health subjects.

For middle schools, the proportion teaching all 16 recommended topics ranged from 4 percent in Arizona to 46 percent in North Carolina. In no state did more than half of middle schools meet the goal, and in most states less than 20 percent did.

These numbers are cause for concern, experts say, as young people continue to face serious but avoidable sexual health risks.

Free On-Campus Abortions: Calif. Students' Demand

The Associated Students of University of California at UC Berkeley unanimously passed a senate resolution forcing taxpayers to fund abortion services on campus because abortions are "necessary and relevant in student life" and "it’s important for students to do well academically."
“When medication abortion is not available at UHS (University Health Services), students who are seeking an abortion face financial, time, and travel constraint burdens that create negative impacts on academic performance and mental health. . . . Abortion is a common health-care service and access to abortion is necessary and relevant in student life.”
-- Senate Resolution 69

“The resolution does not expect students to pay for these services as I, and those who voted for it, believe that health is a right not a privilege.  The university should be providing this right to all students.”
-- Aanchal Chugh, Student Senator

Senate Resolution 69 urges University Health Services to implement medication abortion services at the Tang Center.

The bill states that UC Berkeley students should have access to legal and safe medical abortions.

Aanchal Chugh, ASUC senator and primary sponsor of the bill, said in an email that the Tang Center staff has the ability and resources to provide these services.

From "UC Berkeley student senate says admins. should take pay cut to fund on-campus abortions" by Anthony Gockowski, Investigative Reporter, Campus Reform 3/22/16

The bill argues that inaccessibility to abortion is a violation of women’s rights and impedes academic progress. Since, the bill suggests, women make up a majority of the undergraduate student population, it is only just they be provided with any means necessary to eradicate whatever may get in the way of academic success.

The bill employs several statistics to reinforce its logic, including things like: women aged 18-24 account for 44 percent of all abortions in the United States, one in four women will have an abortion by age 30, and women make up 52 percent of UCB’s undergraduate population.

“I believe the University should reorganize funds from the administration's paychecks to university health services. Many of the administrators at UC Berkeley receive more than generous paychecks while they continue to put student health on the backburner,” Chugh said. “This resolution is demanding that the university reconsider and reprioritize its funding. Instead of investing money into the administration's paychecks, the university should be investing in students' health and safety needs.”

From "College Students Are Demanding Abortion Clinics on Campus" by Gabby Bess, Broadly 3/31/16

Most college health centers provide basic reproductive care: contraception—including IUDs—pap smears, STD testing, and pregnancy counseling. But very few colleges offer on-site medical abortions, though it would make sense. Forty-three percent of college-aged women 18-24 years old will get an abortion, according to the Guttmacher Institute, and access is crucial. Currently, there's only one clinic that provides abortions within walking distance to the UC Berkeley campus. An attempt to walk to the two nearest Planned Parenthood clinics would take you well over an hour.

A 2015 survey of gynecologic services available on 152 university campuses by American College Health Association (ACHA), an advocacy organization for advancing the health of college students, reports that only two institutions provide on-site medical abortions. That's 1.3 percent. Even more troublingly, of all the institutions surveyed, only 65.8 percent explicitly provide referrals for abortion services.

— Emotionally devastated over a broken relationship?  Sorry, there's NO app for that!

According to President Obama's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis have increased for the first time since 2006, with the per-capita incidence in California leading the way, especially in Los Angeles County.

Some public health experts have blamed the heavy use of online dating apps, arguing that they lead to more casual sex among people 25 and younger, who are the most likely to be infected and also the least inclined to seek testing . . .

Rates of chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis in the U.S. had been fluctuating for several years, but all surged in 2014. A particularly staggering statistic, the 1.4 million chlamydia cases reported that year, marked the highest number of annual cases of any condition ever reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to The [Los Angeles] Times.

From "What's causing the rise in STDs in L.A. County and how can technology help?" by Soumya Karlamangla, Los Angeles Times 1/25/16

Sexually active women under 25 are supposed to have annual screenings for [chlamydia and gonorrhea] infections, because they're considered high risk and bear the brunt of the consequences of most STDs. Each year, at least 24,000 women become infertile because of complications of STDs, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

. . . Last year, Planned Parenthood launched an app in California through which men and women can order chlamydia and gonorrhea tests. A paper found that in 2009 there were already 27 such services, and a Google search now yields hundreds of results.

One such start-up, based in Hollywood, began as a way to try to make sex safer, especially for people who might be using apps to find new partners.

In 2013, [Lora Ivanova and Ursula Hessenflow] launched myLAB Box, which sells test kits online for chlamydia and gonorrhea, HIV, trichomoniasis and hepatitis C. The kits — which cost $79 to $189 — require a urine sample, a vaginal swab or blood from a finger prick to send to the lab.

But AIDS Healthcare Foundation President Michael Weinstein worries that as these tests become more popular, it will be difficult to make sure people are getting treated once they're diagnosed.

Already, there are problems following up with patients who order tests online. In the program run by L.A. County's Health Department, only about half of the 9,000 kits mailed out were returned for testing, which is in line with other programs' results.

From "STDs on rise locally, nationally" by Lacey Peterson, The Union Democrat (Sonora, CA) 1/8/16

In 2014, 1.4 million cases of chlamydia were reported, a rate of 456.1 cases per 100,000 people, which was up 2.8 percent from 2013. Rates of primary and secondary syphilis (the most infectious stages of syphilis) and gonorrhea have both increased since 2013, by 15.1 percent and 5.1 percent, respectively.

In 2014, nationally there were 350,062 reported cases of gonorrhea (a rate of 110.7 per 100,000) and 19,999 reported cases of primary and secondary syphilis (6.3 per 100,000).

According to the CDC, syphilis has been called “the great imitator” because it has so many possible symptoms, many of which look like symptoms of other diseases.

The painless syphilis sore that a person may develop early in the infection can be confused for an ingrown hair, zipper cut, or other seemingly harmless bump, the CDC said.

People can also be infected with syphilis and have mild symptoms or none at all.

The rate of gonorrhea in males was more than double that of females. Men between the ages of 20 and 29 had the highest rate of infection, according to the county.

The majority of syphilis cases were reported in men, especially men who have sex with other men. Black men had the highest rate of infection, almost double that of white males, county health officials said.

"Young women between 15 and 24 years of age have the highest rate of chlamydia infections," said Dr. M. Winston Tilghman, senior physician and STD controller for the county. "Chlamydia and gonorrhea both can result in infertility and other long-term reproductive health issues, which make prevention particularly important in this age group."

Lesbian Teens MORE Likely to Get Pregnant, but HOW?

Once again disproving the fairy tale of the "gay gene," multiple studies show that teenage girls who claim the label "lesbian" are more likely to become pregnant (by a male, obviously), and self-identified "gay boys" are more likely to impregnate (a girl, obviously).  While liberals blame everyone else in society for these "unintended pregnancies," the Rainbow Health Initiative, a homosexual advocacy group, says the root causes include mental illness, sexual molestation as a child, and substance abuse.

About 14 percent of females became pregnant, and about 11 percent of males got someone pregnant.

Overall, about 13 percent of heterosexual females and about 14 percent of females who only had male sexual partners had been pregnant, compared to about 23 percent of lesbian or bisexual females and about 20 percent of girls who had male and female sexual partners.

About 10 percent of heterosexual males and those who only had female sexual partners experienced a pregnancy, compared to about 29 percent of gay or bisexual males and about 38 percent of males with female and male sexual partners.

Bisexual males and females had the highest reported levels of sexual activity at 49.5 percent and 54.4 percent.

Bisexual females were five times more likely to have been pregnant than straight females at 8.2 percent vs. 1.5 percent. Lesbian and questioning females were also more likely to report having been pregnant at 6.6 percent and 2.8 percent respectively.

Gay males and males questioning their sexuality had the highest percent of reporting that they had gotten someone pregnant (9.9 percent vs. 2.4 percent for straight males). Bisexual males also had high rates of reporting having gotten someone pregnant at 8.9 percent.

. . . a much-ballyhooed study of teen sexual activity nationwide published in July . . . found that today’s youths are having less sex than previous generations. Less than half of teens older than 14 reported they’ve had intercourse, and the majority who were sexually active used some form of protection, according to the research by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

That LGBTQ youths are more likely to have had sex and to have experienced pregnancy than other teens didn’t surprise [executive director Judith] Kahn, with Teenwise Minnesota, but the extent of risk-taking behavior compared with straight teens came as a shock.

Sexual violence came up repeatedly in interviews of pregnant LGBTQ youths by researchers for Rainbow Health Initiative. Childhood sexual abuse was experienced by at least 5 of the 18 teens interviewed. In some cases, the sexual abuse led to their pregnancies.

To better address the problem, the federal government just issued an $18 million grant to Planned Parenthood in nine states — including Minnesota — to support programs aimed at reducing teen pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases in the LGBTQ population.

The pregnancy rate for teenagers who identify as lesbian or as bisexual is two to seven times greater than their heterosexual counterparts, according to a 2007 British Columbian study  “Not Yet Equal: The Health of Lesbian, Gay, & Bisexual Youth in BC.”  While the average teen birth rate is currently at an all-time low due in part to improved sexual education, this sexual education may be biased toward heterosexuals.  The fact that sexual harassment and substance abuse has been found to be more common in lesbian and gay youth may also contribute to this disparity.

From "Why Do Gay Teens Have Higher Pregnancy Rates Than Straight Teens?" by Anugrah Kumar, Christian Post Contributor 8/15/15

Joe Carter, an editor for The Gospel Coalition, writes that a reason could be that LGBQ teens claimed to have sex much more often than straight teens, as 50.9 percent of lesbian females and 48.7 percent of gay males said they had sex at least once compared with 23.5 percent of straight females and 25.9 percent of straight males.

"Over the past few years evangelical churches have made great strides in learning how to minister to those with same-sex attraction," Carter goes on to say. "But there is much more we could do for teens who identify as gay, lesbian, and bisexual. The fact that LGB teens are engaging in sexual activity with both sexes at a higher rate than their straight peers may be a symptom of loneliness, an unmet need for intimacy and connection, or unresolved emotional problems.

"Some people may be shocked by the high pregnancy rates among the lesbian and gay teens," Evan Lenow, assistant professor of ethics at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, told Baptist Press in written comments. "However, this confirms what studies have shown for years. Individuals who identify as lesbian and gay are much more likely to experiment with sex and have many more sexual partners than their heterosexual counterparts. Some of these teens who identify as lesbian and gay may be simply experimenting with all types of sexual partnerships and thinking less about the ramifications of such experimentation."

Bob Stith, founder of Family and Gender Issues Ministries in Southlake, Texas, told BP data on teen sexual activity indicates "the sexual confusion of many of these young people." He suggested the distinction between homosexual and heterosexual teens often is not "quite so clear" as researchers imply.

"In the haste to break down biblical standards, our culture is experiencing a spiritual truth," Stith, the Southern Baptist Convention's former national strategist for gender issues, said in written comments. "Once you deny biblical truth, regardless of how 'spiritual' this process may sound, you will have greater difficulty determining where to draw the boundaries. And while some of those who redefine the boundaries may not" approve of the behavior of sexual active teenagers, "they have opened the door for each man doing what is right in his own eyes."

Obama CDC Wants More Worry-free Sex for Teen Girls

Although the teenage pregnancy and birth rates continue to drop to historic lows, the Obama administration Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that not enough teenage girls are using long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) such as implants and intrauterine devices (IUDs). The CDC reports that other more common contraception methods fail too often, and the resulting pregnancies cause grief among sexually active teens.

The teen birth rate in 2013, the most recent year in which data is available, was 26.5 births per 1,000 teenagers [compared to] 1991, when the birth rate was 61.8 births per 1,000 teens.

"A key strategy for further reducing teen pregnancy is increasing awareness, access and availability of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC), specifically intrauterine devices," [according to the CDC Vital Signs report].

Nearly 90 percent of sexually active teens surveyed said they used birth control the last time they had sex.

The most common forms of contraception were condoms and birth control pills.

However, relatively few teens are opting for implants and intrauterine devices, which are the most effective kinds of birth control.

“Long-acting reversible contraception is safe for teens, easy to use, and very effective,” [principal deputy director at the CDC, Ileana] Arias told reporters. “We need to remove barriers and increase awareness, access, and availability of long-acting reversible contraception, such as IUDs and implants.”

LARC use among teens has increased more than 17-fold from 0.4 percent in 2005 to 7.1 percent in 2013, the study shows. LARC use was slightly higher in college-aged women than in their high school-aged counterparts.

Efforts to improve access to LARC through the Title X National Family Planning Program, which funds 4,400 family planning centers nationwide, has helped reduce the teen birth rate, officials said.

Dr. Lee Warner, associate director for Science with the CDC's Division of Reproductive Health . . . said that federal subsidies to cover the cost of LARC would further prevent unwanted teen pregnancies.

According to the CDC, condoms can result in pregnancy in 18 out of 100 cases. Birth control pills are also ineffective in about 18 out of 100 cases. LARC, on the other hand, prevents pregnancies in more than 99 out of 100 cases.

Still, condoms should be used along with LARC to protect against sexually transmitted diseases.

In 2005, just 0.4 percent of teens were getting implants or IUDs. By 2013, more than 7 percent were. "Of the 616,148 female teens seeking contraceptive services in 2013, 17,349 (2.8 percent) used IUDs, and 26,347 (4.3 percent) used implants," the report reads.

"Long-acting, reversible contraception requires no effort after insertion, and can prevent unintended pregnancy for at least 3 to 10 years," the CDC team said.

"During the first year of typical use, both IUDs and implants have lower failure rates (less than one percent) than oral contraceptives (9 percent) and condoms (18 percent)."

From "CDC: Teens Unfamiliar With Most Effective Form of Birth Control" by Kimberly Leonard, U.S. News & World Report 4/7/15

Valerie Huber, president and CEO of the National Abstinence Education Association, says the CDC report ignores the complex nature of teen sex, saying it should not be portrayed only as a pregnancy prevention concern.

"Any discussion of sex with teens must acknowledge the complex context of most sexual relationships and must draw upon the research when giving counsel," she says.

Huber says the CDC's messaging was slanted toward the idea that the LARC method would provide safe sex.

"Sexual delay has the greatest impact on decreasing the number of lifetime partners, preventing pregnancy, decreasing STD rates and increasing condom use when sexually active," she says. "Teens need to understand that sexual delay is the best way to avoid acquiring a disease, and any information on contraception must be presented in a way that it does not normalize teen sex."

Pornography Belongs in Classroom, More Experts Say

A growing chorus of education experts believe that children, beginning with elementary school, benefit from a pornographic curriculum that exposes them to a wide variety of pornography in order to train them to be more critical in their porn viewing, and thus better consumers.
“What I am proposing is that we reinvent sex education in the classroom. Rather than focusing on the technical disease-related or biological aspects of sex, we should also use this platform to discuss and show other phenomena, such as pornography, taught by trained teachers, so that young people can develop a critical approach to what they are seeing.”
-- Professor Christian Graugaard
For background, read Education Experts Say Use Porn in Teaching Sex Ed

-- From "Show Pornography in Schools, Urges Danish Sexology Professor" by Felicity Capon, Newsweek 3/3/15

Professor Christian Graugaard, a sexology professor at Aalborg University in Denmark, was speaking to the Danish television broadcaster DR when he made the comments. He believes that pupils aged 13 and above should be able to view and discuss pornographic images and literature as part of sex education classes.

Research conducted in the Nordic countries suggests that young people encounter pornography online when they are in their early teens, with studies showing that up to 99% of teenage boys and 86% of teenage girls in the Nordic countries have seen some pornography.

Professor Graugaard says the reaction to his proposal has been positive, with many teachers and pupils supporting his views. The broadcaster DR spoke to several pupils at different schools to gauge their reactions, and were, according to Graugaard, “very much in favour”.

"I think you could get something out of it – for example the difference between real love between two people who have sex and hard porn and orgies from the US," ninth grade student Anders Kaagaard told DR.

From "Porn belongs in the classroom, says Danish professor" by Helen Russell in Aarhus, UK Guardian 3/15/15

“My proposal is to critically discuss pornography with 8th and 9th graders [age 15 – the legal age of consent in Denmark – and 16 respectively] as part of a sensible didactic strategy, carried out by trained teachers,” [Graugaard] told the Guardian.

“We should strengthen their ability to distinguish between the media’s depictions of the body and sex and the everyday life of an average teenager. They should become conscientious and critical consumers.

“Porn may actually offer a variety of both entertaining and educational properties,” Graugaard said. “Porn can even be feminist and in some cases it can be part of a democratisation of sex and [it can] promote diversity. But it can also be excluding – of body types, gender and sexuality. We want our kids to have exciting and gratifying sex lives, so an open-minded, constructive dialogue is the best way to make sure that they are able to make meaningful decisions for themselves.”

A similar scheme was suggested in the UK in 2014 when sexual health charity Brook, the PSHE Association and the Sex Education Forum issued new guidelines for sex education in schools including discussion about the dangers of “sexting” and X-rated films.

From "Sex education without porn is not sex education" by Rhiannon Lucy Cosslett, UK Guardian 3/17/15

It’s a shame that porn in the classroom would be such a source of controversy in Britain. It is a progressive move that would only catch on if the nation were to undergo a wholesale sexual shame transplant. Nevertheless, we can fantasise. Wouldn’t it be marvellous if the buttoned-up British could transform overnight into a liberated mass of laid-back, well-adjusted Euro-shaggers who have grown up in households that are comfortable with nudity?

Were society to discuss porn openly and critically, our children would be better adjusted, and our sex lives would, in all likelihood, be more fulfilled. There are those who doubt the anecdotal evidence of what young men and women have been telling researchers over the years: that porn is affecting their sexual relationships in myriad disturbing and distressing ways.

It is time we wake up to the fact that a sex education curriculum that does not include porn is not a sex education curriculum, and furthermore is one that is failing in its safeguarding duty. Because better discussion of porn and consent is vital when set against a backdrop of child sexual exploitation.

Gov't Says Syphilis Soaring Among Homosexual Men

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported this week that the number of cases of the sexually-transmitted disease syphilis increased over ten percent in just one year and that male homosexual behavior (anal sex) accounts for 75% of the increase.
"Syphilis is like the canary in the coal mine for HIV. People are going to be positive for syphilis before they are diagnosed with HIV. This means that there is a potential increase in HIV cases."
-- Dr. Jill Rabin, Women's Health Programs-PCAP Services at North Shore-LIJ Health System in New Hyde Park, N.Y.

Primary and secondary syphilis is the stage at which the sexually transmitted disease is at its most acute and infective. People in these stages can pass the disease to others for up to two years after becoming infected. If diagnosed early, syphilis can be treated with penicillin or other antibiotics.

Gay and bisexual men continue to be most affected by the disease.

The uptick in syphilis cases locally began back in 2010.

"There are over 20 million cases of sexually transmitted diseases [STDs] every year in the United States, and they continue to pose a risk of lifelong complications for millions of Americans," said Dr. Jonathan Mermin, director of CDC's National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention.

There are a variety of reasons that put gay and bisexual men at high risk for syphilis, said Mermin.

"Some are the high number of sexual partners and sexual networks that create a vicious cycle where the prevalence of syphilis is higher. And that leads to higher incidence, which leads to higher prevalence, and that cycle can increase the frequency of infection," he said.

The sores caused by syphilis make it easier to get or give someone HIV. . . .

[The CDC] found, rates among men were increasing, while those for women were falling or stable.

Women continue to have the most reported infections -- some 993,348 cases in 2013 for a rate of 623.1 per 100,000 -- at least partly because they are more likely to be screened for the disease, the report said. The rate was a 2.4% decline from 2012.

On the other hand, there were 408,558 cases among males for a rate of 262.6 cases per 100,000 males, up 0.8% from 2012.

In jurisdictions where information for both sex of partner and HIV status was relatively complete -- defined as 70% or greater for all cases -- 52% of men who have sex with men with syphilis also had HIV. The co-infection rates for men who have sex with women and for women were 9.9% and 5.2%, respectively.

Divorce Rates Drop, as well as Marriage Rates

Yesterday, the New York Times decided to print statistics showing that the rate of divorce, often erroneously quoted as being 50%, has been steadily declining for decades, but the driving forces are not encouraging as more people chose to marry later in life, or never at all.
“Two-thirds of divorces are initiated by women, so when you’re talking about changes in divorce rates, in many ways you’re talking about changes in women’s expectations.”

-- From "The Truth About The Divorce Rate Is Surprisingly Optimistic" by Brittany Wong, The Huffington Post 12/2/14

We've all heard that 50 percent of marriages in the U.S. end in divorce.

And while that disheartening stat continues to get tossed around, the divorce rate isn't really at 50 percent -- and it isn't rising either. In fact, a new piece in the New York Times' data blog Upshot suggests that the divorce rate has actually been dropping for some time now. Looking at the numbers, the Times suggests the high divorce rate of the late 1970s and early 1980s may have just been a "historical anomaly," rather than a trend.

From "Everything you heard about divorce is wrong, sort of" by Herb Scribner, Deseret News 12/2/14

. . . Later marriages are a trend I wrote about back in October. Since the Great Recession of 2008, women have found more job opportunities than men, giving them a leg up in becoming the breadwinner at home and causing many of them to seek out men who have their finances and future secured.

Young millennial women are also sidestepping marriage to focus on personal goals ahead of forming a family, according to Deseret News National’s Emily Hales. Young women are putting other priorities — a career, having children and cohabitating — ahead of marriage, even though it’s something they really want, Hales wrote. It doesn’t help, either, that young marriages are also more likely to end in divorce, the Pew Research Center found, which has motivated youngsters to wait for marriage.

But only time will tell whether or not the divorce rate is truly declining. Family Studies reported older men and women, especially baby boomers, are divorcing at unprecedented rates. And if you adjust the current divorce rates by age, the divorce rate actually peaked in 2011 with a 40 percent increase, Family Studies reported.

And many divorce rate numbers don’t take into account the rise in cohabitating couples, who don’t always marry but still end up in separation, as Bradford Wilcox wrote about in 2013.

From "The Divorce Surge Is Over, but the Myth Lives On" by Claire Cain Miller, New York Times 12/2/14

About 70 percent of marriages that began in the 1990s reached their 15th anniversary (excluding those in which a spouse died), up from about 65 percent of those that began in the 1970s and 1980s. Those who married in the 2000s are so far divorcing at even lower rates. If current trends continue, nearly two-thirds of marriages will never involve a divorce, according to data from Justin Wolfers, a University of Michigan economist (who also contributes to The Upshot).

Of college-educated people who married in the early 2000s, only about 11 percent divorced by their seventh anniversary, the last year for which data is available. Among people without college degrees, 17 percent were divorced, according to Mr. Wolfers.

Working-class families often have more traditional notions about male breadwinners than do the college-educated — yet economic changes have left many of the men in these families struggling to find work. As a result, many wait to achieve a level of stability that never comes and thus never marry, while others split up during tough economic times.

Some of the decline in divorce clearly stems from the fact that fewer people are getting married — and some of the biggest declines in marriage have come among groups at risk of divorce. But it also seems to be the case that marriages have gotten more stable, as people are marrying later.

Oregon Trains Pre-teens in Masturbation, Anal Sex

Sheriff Tom Bergin has asked the Clatsop County District Attorney to assist in shutting down the annual Adolescent Sexuality Conference, which is funded by the Oregon Department of Education (DOE) and the Oregon Health Authority, due to criminal activity — not to mention training young children in virtual sex via Internet:
“You can program her to do whatever you want to say . . . ‘give me a blow job' or something. . . . Teledildonics basically refers to the control of sex toys over the Internet; the remote use of sex toys.”

Students [as young as 11] attending the conference were shown porn sites, taught how to access cybersex and even were encouraged to Skype each other while masturbating. That is one way this conference material could be setting kids up for illegal activity, Sheriff Bergin said.

The Oregon DOE employs Brad Victor, who runs the conference and is paid to help school districts align sex education to state standards.

The city of Seaside just started reviewing the conference’s contract and is looking into the liability risks of hosting the conference.

The Oregon House of Representatives education committee will also look into the conference.

Part of the lesson plan at a workshop at the Oregon Adolescent Sexuality Conference is an adult website called Virtual Fem. In addition to the content from that website, numerous handouts, such as one that encourages cyber and phone sex, have been passed out to high school and middle school students in attendance.

The pamphlets go on to suggest other ways students can engage in intimate activities without going all the way, including bathing together, shaving each other, wearing each other’s underwear, role playing, buying an extra-large pair of pajama bottoms to sleep in together, lap dances and strip teases.

“All kinds of speakers about Internet porn, using Internet sex toys, using meth as is shown in this book for when you’re engaging in sex. It encourages using meth because it helps your sexual drive and what not in here,” said [educator Lisa] Maloney. “It says in this booklet that was handed out and given out to all young people.”

In the WISE curriculum [the grant behind the conference], sixth grade students are asked, “How do people express their sexual feelings?” The answers they’re given to choose from include anal sex, oral sex and sexual fantasy.

When confronted about the graphic content, the conference’s director, Brad Victor, declined to comment about one session in particular about performing sex acts over Skype and whether those sessions could potentially be recorded and used against a student later.

In 2013, Parents’ Rights in Education and others asked American Life League’s Rita Diller to attend the conference and see for herself what was being foisted on children. Diller says she came away scarred. “I monitor Planned Parenthood sex education on a regular basis and I have seen some unbelievably horrifying situations that young people are put in because of the abortion giant’s fixation with sexualizing children, but never have I seen so many adults work so hard to defile young people than at this conference,” she said. “It is blatant child abuse,” Diller continued.

Pediatricians Push IUDs, Implants on Teen Girls

The liberals' war on the birth rate has expanded as the American Academy of Pediatrics issued a policy urging doctors to convince their teenage female patients to accept intrauterine devices or hormone implants to enable a childhood of carefree sex with their teen lovers, and avoid pregnancy from the all-too-common occurrences of statutory rape.

"All methods of hormonal birth control are safer than pregnancy."
-- Dr. Mary Ott, Indiana University (lead author for Academy policy)

Thus, the pediatricians are saying that it's better NOT to become pregnant, at any age, apparently.

-- From "What's the best birth control for teens?" by NBC NEWS - WFLA-TV8 (Tampa, FL) 9/29/14

The best birth control to offer teenage girls is an implantable rod, followed by an IUD, pediatricians say in new guidance. It may seem odd to think of a pediatrician prescribing birth control, but it makes perfect sense, the American Academy of Pediatrics says in new guidance. “Adolescents consider pediatricians and other health care providers a highly trusted source of sexual health information,” the new guidance reads. Pediatricians typically see their patients well into their teens and often into their early 20s, by which time most people have had sex at least once.

. . . data also show that teenagers almost always ignore abstinence advice and their own promises.

From "Pediatricians Urge IUDs or Implants for Teen Girls" by Lindsey Tanner, Associated Press 9/29/14

Teen girls who have sex should use IUDs or hormonal implants — long-acting birth control methods that are effective, safe and easy to use, the nation's most influential pediatricians' group recommends.

IUDs and hormonal implants cost more, usually hundreds of dollars, because inserting them involves a medical procedure typically done in doctors' offices. But they're less expensive in the long run than over-the-counter condoms or prescription birth control pills, said Dr. Mary Ott, an adolescent medicine specialist and associate pediatrics professor at Indiana University. She is the policy statement's lead author.

Teens have to remember to use pills and condoms consistently. By contrast, IUDs typically work for three to 10 years after insertion, while implants typically last three years.

. . . hormonal patches may be less effective in girls weighing more than 198 pounds, the policy says.

To read the entire article above, CLICK HERE.

From "Word To Pediatricians: IUDs And Implants Top Choices For Teen Birth Control" by Veronica Thomas, WBUR-FM NPR (Boston, Mass.) 9/29/14

Because IUDs and implants don’t rely on any action from the user, they’re a particularly good fit for teens, says Heather Boonstra, Director of Public Policy at the Guttmacher Institute.

“It’s sort of a set-and-forget method,” she says. Once inserted by a trained professional, an implant or IUD can last from three to ten years, and will be over 99 percent effective. The implant is a matchstick-sized rod inserted in the upper arm; the IUD is a small, T-shaped device placed into the uterus.

Their use has been rising for years in the general population. From 2002 to 2009, implant and IUD use nearly doubled among women overall. But while use of these long-acting methods has also been increasing among teens, less than five percent of all teen contraceptive users currently choose them.

Refusing Sex is 'Sexual Violence:' Univ. Michigan

Institutions of "higher learning" across America are scrambling to climb onboard President Obama's election-season declaration of war against unwanted sex on college campuses.  These are the same institutions that advance every imaginable kind of sexual immorality (a.k.a. sexual freedom) that is rampant among teens and young adults — a result of the public education industry's sexual training programs from kindergarten through college.

Last week, President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden stood side by side to announce a new administration initiative to combat sexual assault on college campuses.

The Obama administration’s anti-sexual assault campaign, dubbed “It’s On Us,” is being conducted in collaboration with over 200 universities around the country, as well as groups such as the NCAA and even the video game company Electronic Arts.

Students who take an “It’s On Us” pledge are asked to change their profile pictures on social media outlets to the campaign’s logo and to supply their emails and ZIP codes to the campaign. Those who participate will have their information forwarded to the Center for American Progress, a leftwing think tank with significant ties to the Obama administration.

From "‘Withholding Sex’ Now Considered ‘Sexual Violence’ at U of M" by Katherine Timpf, National Review Online 9/26/14

The University of Michigan has released a list of relationship behaviors that it considers violent and abusive — including “withholding sex.”

“Discounting the partner’s feelings regarding sex,” “criticizing the partner sexually,” and “having sex with other people” are also examples of “sexual violence,” according to the list.

The school also offers definitions of domestic abuse. Under the section for “verbal or psychological abuse,” it states that not only is “insulting the partner” considered “abuse,” so is “ignoring the partner’s feelings.”

From "University of Michigan: Withholding Sex, Discounting Feelings are ‘Sexual Violence’" by Derek Draplin, The College Fix 9/25/14

The terms, found under the heading “definitions,” also suggest verbal or psychological abuse include: “insulting the partner; ignoring the partner’s feelings; withholding approval as a form of punishment; yelling at the partner; labeling the partner with terms like crazy [and] stupid.”

Janet Bloomfield, social media director for “A Voice For Men,” an activist group that counters feminist extremism and misandry, took aim at these University of Michigan examples, first on her Twitter account over the summer and more recently in an email to The College Fix.tweet

“These kinds of policies contribute to an increasing level of sexual misconduct hysteria and essentially create a chilling climate for young men,” Bloomfield said. “When things like ‘withholding sex’ and ‘ignoring a partner’s feelings’ are framed as a pattern of behavior that is abusive, they are not only pathologizing normal relationship behaviors, but they are opening the door for vindictive or spurned partners to make allegations that can have profound effects for the accused. . . . I am unaware of a single case in which the accused student is a woman and the victim is a man.”

The University of Chicago, on its website, defines an abuser as someone who “has a strong belief in extreme gender roles” and “is jealous and possessive” among more typical forms of abuse listed.
