'Gay Hate Crimes' Against Christians Planned

U.S. District Judge Benjamin Settle ruled that the name and address of every Washington state resident who signed the Referendum 71 petition to repeal the state homosexual partnership law be published, and immediately the homosexualists announced that they will place the list on the Internet for quick searching to locate "the nearest homophobe" to target.

"The whole family was in the dining room, and her son fielded the call, an anonymous call. The guy said, 'I'm going to kill you and your whole family,'"

Referendum 71 was a failed effort by opponents of gay marriage to repeal Washington's "everything but marriage" domestic partnership law. Now, following a protracted legal battle, a federal judge has ordered the petitions be made public.

[Homosexual activist] "Know Thy Neighbor" plans to publish the 130,000-plus names in an online searchable database. The group has done this before in Arkansas, Florida and Massachusetts.

Director Tom Lang says it allows gay people and their allies to search for individual signers they know and confront them.

[Protect Marriage Washington attorney James Bopp Jr. said,] "Well, our plan is to do everything we can do to protect people's right to participate in our democratic process without being subject to death threats and threats of violence and actual violence."

From "Washington to ID Voters Who Fought Gay Rights" by June Williams, Courthouse News Service 10/18/11

Referendum 71 attempted to overturn a 2009 Washington law that granted domestic partners all the rights of married couples. Offered the choice between accepting or rejecting the new law, voters approved it, 53-47 percent.

In the weeks after the referendum, several groups requested copies of the R-71 petition, which Protect Marriage used to place the referendum on the ballot. The initiative's conservative supporters sued Washington in 2009 to keep the names of 137,000 people who signed its petition secret, saying the release under the Washington's Public Records Act violated the their civil rights and there was a "reasonable probability" that signees would be harassed.

After a federal judge initially blocked the release, the 9th Circuit overturned in October 2009. But a temporary block authorized by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy kept the names under wraps for another eight months as the justices considered oral arguments. In June 2010, the court ruled 8-1 to release the signatures, leaving open the possibility that threats posed to petition signers could warrant an exception to the Public Records Act.

From "State releases Referendum 71 petition names" by Mike Baker, Associated Press 10/17/11

The Washington State Archives provided a DVD to The Associated Press on Monday showing the 138,000 signatures for Referendum 71. The disclosure came just a few hours after a federal judge ruled that the signers are unlikely to face harassment.

Opponents of the law that expanded gay partnership rights managed to get enough signatures in 2009 to force a vote on the issue. They had pushed in court to keep the names of petition supporters private, arguing that it was a contentious issue and that people could be threatened.

An attorney for the group plans to appeal the decision.

From "No Harm in Disclosing Petitioner Names, Court Rules" by Sam Favate, Wall Street Journal 10/19/11

Remember that petition you signed protesting people who don’t clean up after their dogs? Or the one to demand that George Lucas release the original, unaltered Star Wars films on Blu-ray? Well, if you thought you were signing them in complete anonymity, think again.

Supporters of the petition to force a vote on the law appealed to halt the release, claiming that reprisals, vandalism and death threats could result, but U.S. District Judge Benjamin Settle rejected that, holding there was no “reasonable probability” of reprisals, threats or harassment.

Meanwhile, a Massachusetts-based gay rights group called “Know Thy Neighbor” has said they will publish the names online with a month, KUOW reported. The group, which has published names in an online searchable database concerning similar matters in Arkansas, Florida and Massachusetts, said doing so allows gay people and supporters to find signers they know and talk to them about the issues.

From "Names of those opposing domestic partner law are given to the public" by Kim Murphy, Los Angeles Times 10/18/11

Even as backers of the referendum filed an appeal to try to get the release halted -- fearing that job reprisals, vandalism and death threats could be the result -- the state on Tuesday was giving out lists of the 137,500 names to anyone who wanted them.

Washington's secretary of state, Sam Reed, who has long argued that the state law requires disclosure, called the court's ruling “a victory for transparency and open disclosure in our state's referendum and initiative process.”

But those arguing to keep the signatures secret said Settle appeared to discount threats that were more than theoretical. Lawyers said they documented a number of cases in which signers whose names became public were subjected to death threats, harassment and vandalism.

“People around here need to understand the bullying tactics of the homosexual left,” [Protect Marriage Washington lawyer Stephen Pidgeon] said. “There's no other group like it. If a pastor talks about alcoholism, alcoholics don't get together and threaten to kill him. The only people that show up and want to burn the church down and kill the pastor are the homosexuals.”

Miss. Town Counters Atheists on Prayer in School

When residents of Summit, (Pike County) Mississippi saw the atheists' threatening letter regarding prayer in public school, they decided to mount a campaign to challenge the national trend of acquiescing to the politically correct distortion of the U.S. Constitution.

-- From "Lord's Prayer recited at Friday's football game" by Roslyn Anderson, WLBT-TV3 (Mississippi) 10/10/11

A movement is underway to allow open prayer in schools and school related events.

Some Mississippi schools, including one in Pike County, have continued prayer at sporting events and want to reverse the U.S. Supreme Court decision.

On September 23rd, the Freedom From Religion Foundation sent letters to Mississippi school districts discouraging prayer at school sponsored events after they reported receiving complaints from Mississippi residents.

"We got a letter saying that we had to stop prayer, but I'm going to tell you, you're not going to stop prayer at North Pike because individuals are always gonna have the right to pray," said North Pike School District Superintendent Dr. Ben Cox.

From "Freedom FROM Religion?" by Paul Ott, Listen to the Eagle Radio and Television Shows

. . . Being a God, family and Country outdoor show, we made the immediate announcement that we would pray at the first Friday night game of any school that called in a request for us to do so. . . . to avoid getting the school in trouble, the decision was made to legally have The Lord’s Prayer repeated by the fans at the stadium that wished to do so, immediately following the National Anthem. It seemed that all six hundred fans did so.

. . . Well, sorry, Freedom From Religioners! And, thank you, North Pike High School football fans and the opposing team’s fans from Purvis, Mississippi, for standing up and reciting The Lord’s Prayer just as our Lord and Savior instructed us to do. No, Sir, Mr. ACLU and Mr. Freedom From Religion, and all you other organizations that wish to take God out of this God-Blessed Country for over 200 years! You will not succeed, due to the will of God and prayer. Our forefathers founded this great country on Prayer and we will continue to pray and one day, you may understand the “power of prayer.” You are free to stay away from prayer and religion, but you are not free to make us God-fearing people stay away from God publicly or privately!

Atheists Crave Church Fellowship, but Absent God

On Sundays, Harvard University’s humanist chaplain, Greg Epstein, leads a non-church for the irreligious focused on meditation, lively philosophical discussion, and of course, potluck meals.

On Saturday, at a ceremony featuring Seth MacFarlane - creator of [TV's] "Family Guy" and official Harvard Humanist of the Year - Epstein launched a nationwide network of groups like his, designed to offer atheists the fellowship and ceremony of churchgoing without any belief in the transcendent.

The need for such communities may be especially acute on today’s college campuses. Millennials are the least religious generation in recent history. According to the Pew Research Center, fully one-fourth of adults under 30 describe themselves as atheist, agnostic, or "nothing in particular" - and many are floundering as they search for purpose.

"There’s a huge community of college-aged people who call themselves ‘spiritual but not religious,’" said Victor Kazanjian, dean of intercultural education and religious and spiritual life at Wellesley College. "They don’t have an organized community in which to belong and in which to ask questions of meaning."

Heralded by a live rendition of the theme from Family Guy, Seth W. MacFarlane, the show’s creator, took a swig of what appeared to be alcohol in front of a packed audience at Memorial Church this Saturday.

“This is kind of hilarious doing this in a church. [I’ll just] take communion here,” said MacFarlane, who was accepting the fifth-annual Harvard Humanist of the Year Award [sponsored by the Harvard Humanist Chaplaincy].

His speech, which delivered religious punch line after punch line, addressed what he described as the corrupting influence of religion in today’s society. His address supported Humanism as an alternative to traditional religion.

Underlying MacFarlane’s argument was the notion that religion is no longer necessary to keep society intact. Instead, he said, people should turn to reason and science to uphold moral values.

Teachers Forbidden Private Christian Lives

Sycamore High School teachers in Pleasant View (Cheatham County) Tennessee were not allowed to participate in an evening community-wide Christian event organized by students out of fear of another ACLU lawsuit.

-- From "Teachers Not Allowed To Speak At After-School Prayer Event" by Tim Wetzel & Heather Graf, WTVF-TV5 (Nashville) 10/12/11

The student group said they got permission to hold the "Fields of Faith" event on-campus at Sycamore High School, but they had no idea that teachers couldn't take part until [they were told on] Wednesday morning.

The controversy did not put an end to the music and worship on Wednesday night, but it did put a damper on things. About a dozen teachers showed up, but kept a low profile in the stands.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tim Webb said that the district must take every precaution in regards to the separation of church and state, because it's already been sued once about the very same issue.

The district recently settled the lawsuit that was filed in 2009 by four families who were accusing the system of promoting Christianity in three different schools.

From "Teachers steer clear of religious expression" by Bob Smietana, The Tennessean 10/16/11

Gwen White Owl, a math teacher at Sycamore High School, had been invited by students to speak at last week’s prayer rally. She said the district’s lawyers said no, out of fear of another lawsuit.

“[Teachers] can go to whatever they want, it is their free time,” [Tim Webb, director of Cheatham County Schools] said. “In my mind, it was a student-initiated event. It was held on school property. That changes the rules.”

David Cortman, senior counsel for the Alliance Defense Fund, a Christian legal group, said that teachers from Cheatham County Schools have contacted his organization, which is considering a lawsuit.

Cortman said Fields of Faith was a community event, and teachers were free to take part it. He compared the situation to a teacher attending a church that meets in a school. In that case, a teacher would be free to talk about religion to students who attended that church, even though it met in a school.

From "ACLU concerns still linger" by Tim Adkins, Ashland City Times 10/14/11

With the Cheatham County school district still feeling the aftermath of the ACLU suing the district in November 2009 for promoting and endorsing religious activity, many questions still remain on what is or isn’t acceptable in the schools.

The School Board settled the suit in March 2010.

Under the terms of the settlement, the district agreed not to solicit prayers at school events or promote their own religious beliefs to students in class or at school events.

. . . three Pegram Elementary School educators were issued letters of reprimand last year for praying openly at an event. Those letters were issued only after a complaint was made.

Fullerton is the fourth Cal State to create a Queer Studies minor, an interdisciplinary concentration that pulls courses from a variety of fields.

Queer Studies does not focus solely on the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender community, said Karyl Ketchum, an assistant professor of women's studies who co-proposed the minor. The program's focus is broader, on norms and how they've changed over time and throughout different cultures, though non-normative sexualities are a large part of the curriculum.

Students analyze previous works from a new perspective, and challenge the purpose of norms and the status quo to understand issues like racism, classism and sexism and how they intersect, said Kristin Beals, an associate professor of psychology and co-proposer of the program.

Mitt Romney vs. Christian Tea Party Candidates

From "Romney's rise challenges tea party's clout in GOP" by Charles Babington, Associated Press 10/15/11

On the surface, Romney's strength seems at odds with the tea party's fiery success in ousting Republicans seen as compromisers, and in making the House GOP caucus more ideological, even when its leaders plead for flexibility.

Romney defends the government's 2008 bank bailouts, plus the mandated health insurance he initiated as Massachusetts governor. He says he can work with "good Democrats." Although he later changed, Romney once supported abortion rights, gun control and gay rights.

These positions run counter to the beliefs and goals of many tea party activists scattered throughout the country. . . .

Polls of Republicans show Romney holding steady at about 25 percent, while Bachmann, Perry and Cain take turns making surges. "That tells me that 75 percent of the primary voters would really rather have someone else," said GOP lobbyist and consultant Mike McKenna.

When administrators arrived at the academy at 502 W. Euclid Ave., they discovered a number of broken windows and door panes on the east side of the building, which were shattered by bricks, Arlington Heights Police Capt. Nicholas Pecora said. There are no suspects yet.

Attached to one of the bricks was a note, which referenced speakers scheduled for a Saturday night banquet at the school, said the Rev. Calvin Lindstrom of Christian Liberty. The note read, “This is just a sample of what we will do if you don’t shut down Scott Lively and AFTAH,” Lindstrom said.

The banquet was organized by the Americans for Truth About Homosexuality, a group that seeks to expose the “homosexual activist agenda,” according to its website. The banquet featured speaker and Moody Church pastor Rev. Erwin Lutzer and honored Scott Lively of Defending the Family International and Abiding Truth Ministries with the “American Truthteller” award.

About 30 protesters picketed the banquet outside the academy, but police, who were present at the event, said no arrests were made.

In his letter to Lutzer, GLN’s Bob Schwartz writes:

“Are you aware of Lively’s history as a vicious gay basher?…In addition, as you may know, LaBarbera’s organization [AFTAH] and Lively’s Abiding Truth Ministries are both described as ‘hate groups’ by the Southern Poverty Law Center. "Union is not South Orange/Maplewood where one out of four families consist of two Mommies or daddies… Why parade your unnatural immoral behaviors before the rest of us?" Knox wrote. "I/we do not have to accept anything, anyone, any behavior or any choices! I do not have to tolerate anything others wish to do."

Knox was escorted from school property . . .

Union Chief School Administrator Patrick Martin said . . . "We're going to do the right thing."

State records show Knox has taught for at least 20 years, including 10 in the Union school district, and earns $70,688 a year. On her Facebook page, she describes herself as a special education teacher.

Knox is also faculty adviser for the school's Bible study group, the Seekers Fellowship, according to district records. On Facebook, she refers to herself as a "Jesus freak."

Edward Barocas, legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union in New Jersey, said in a statement, “Although we do not agree with the sentiments expressed on Ms. Knox’s personal Facebook page, her beliefs and comments are protected by the First Amendment.”

But Mr. Barocas added, “Because her postings raised questions about her conduct within school, the school district can and should investigate whether she is performing her job in accordance with school policies and the state’s Law Against Discrimination.”

Members of Garden State Equality, a statewide civil rights organization that advocates gay rights, sent hundreds of e-mails and made phone calls to the district on Thursday demanding that Ms. Knox be dismissed because of her comments.

Mr. Paragano said . . .“My concern is that if this teacher has these feelings, is she going to call out the bullying of a gay, lesbian and transgender person?”

[Knox wrote on Facebook,] "Why parade your unnatural immoral behaviors before the rest of us? AND YOU ARE WRONG! I/WE DO NOT HAVE TO ACCEPT ANYTHING, ANYONE. ANY BEHAVIOR OR ANY CHOICES! I DO NOT HAVE TO TOLERATE ANYTHING OTHERS WISH TO DO."

One can only shudder and imagine what a young, probably confused and uncertain gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered student, must feel when having to face an authority figure so vehemently and aggressively condemning your very worth as a human being.

Viki Knox's anti-LGBT rant flies in the face of LGBT history month and is out of line with the message she should be sending to all of her students -- that they are worthy of respect and dignity regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

While some users expressed approval of Knox's views, other Christians spoke out against the teacher's comments.

"You are kidding me!" said user Judy Greco Amorosa. "I heard about this post - What kind of Christian are you? God made each and every one of us - gay, straight, black, white, Christian, Jew, blond, brunette - and we should all love eachother - that is the Christian way."

Knox noted in one lengthy Facebook comment: "I have friends and loved ones who are practicing/living as homosexuals. Yes I love can care about them. We hug and exchange gifts. We have family dinners. But how they live and their actions, behaviors - CHOICES are against the nature and character of God!"

What did Viki Knox say? Here it is:
"Homosexuality is a perverted spirit that has existed from the beginning of creation. The word of God refers to it often. That's if you believe the Word to be truly God's intended blueprint for his people. I have friends and loved ones who are practicing/living as homosexuals. Yes I love can care about them. We hug and exchange gifts. We have family dinners. But how they live and their actions, behaviors—CHOICES are against the nature and character of God! Do I tell me so? Yes, of course. Do I treat them bad? If course not! Jesus never did that to ANYONE he meant. He spoke to them of their situation and offered them life eternal. He didn't say it was okay but we've all sinned and come short if God's will for us daily. That's why we Christians true followers pray, repent, and spend time with Christ daily."

"God cannot abide, tolerate, accept, go along with SIN. That's why Jesus came and gave his life as an offering for our souls; so we could once again be right-standing...Everything God has created, Satan has perverted, EVERYTHING! Sin is sin. Wrong is wrong."
UPDATE 2/24/15: From "N.J. teacher who made anti-gay remarks on Facebook scores legal victory in bid to get job back" by Thomas Zambito, The Star-Ledger (Newark, NJ) 3/13/15

U.S. District Court Judge Kevin McNulty rejected an effort by Union Township Board of Education officials to dismiss a 2013 lawsuit filed by Jenye Viki Knox, who claims school officials violated her free speech and religious rights.

School officials claim Knox negotiated away many of her lawsuit claims when she agreed to settle a challenge to her tenure -- an argument McNulty rejected.

"The settlement by its terms extended only to the Tenure Charges," the judge wrote. "The Board denies Knox's assertion that they explicitly agreed to her reservation of rights as to other claims. It is undisputed, however, that the Board only settled the Tenure Charge, and did not obtain a general release as part of that settlement."

Knox was tenured in 2003. The board filed charges of insubordination and "conduct unbecoming" against Knox in December 2011.

The ruling means Knox, who has not worked since 2012, could soon have a chance to argue her case before a federal jury. She is seeking reinstatement, back pay and monetary damages.

Women Honored for Killing their Offspring

The wealthy 85-year-old Harriett Hills Stinson (from the San Francisco family that founded Hills Bros. Coffee) has decided to make public her choice to kill her unborn child decades before Roe v. Wade made it legal for her to do so. She is encouraging other women to proudly speak out on their own action(s) to make that ultimate choice of death for their child(ren).

"I've never regretted it. . . . for the sake of my family, it was not right for me to have a fourth child."

-- From "Women urge others to go public about abortions" by Carla Marinucci, San Francisco Chronicle Political Writer 10/13/11

On Wednesday, Stinson was honored as national, state and Bay Area supporters of abortion and reproductive rights gathered on the Peninsula for their annual Power of Choice lunch sponsored by NARAL Pro-Choice America, the nation's largest abortion and reproductive rights advocacy group.

The gathering in Palo Alto of 600 supporters was held to assess the political landscape on a key social issue and discuss the impact of what women's leaders are increasingly defining as a conservatives' "war on women" as the 2012 presidential race heats up.

Stinson's decision to tell the story of her abortion at Wednesday's event comes as pro-choice supporters warn of an increasingly militant conservative lobby that they say hopes for sharp restrictions on family planning funding and legal abortions - an issue they predict could influence the women's vote in next year's election.

Stinson urged the estimated 1 in 4 American women who have had abortions to "be bold and brave and do something drastic," to tell their stories to their friends, family and legislators, an effort she said will bring the matter out of the shadows and dramatize the need for safe, legal services.

Ending Abortion Fed Funding is Deadly Says Pelosi

The Republican House will pass the Protect Life Act to negate the ObamaCare tax subsidies for abortion insurance coverage, and also ensure right of conscience for health-care workers.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi opposes the legislation saying that it means that women will “die on the floor of health care providers.”

UPDATE 10/13/11: Bill passes House with help from 15 Democrats

-- From "Pelosi calls abortion bill deadly" by Seung Min Kim, Politico 10/13/11

Pelosi and other Democrats dismissed the bill as a “waste of time” and criticized House GOP leadership for bringing up a bill that isn’t directly related to jobs and the economy – particularly since the abortion legislation has a dim chance in the Democratically-controlled Senate.

Earlier this week, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) defended putting the bill on the floor, saying it was part of the House GOP’s “Pledge to America” and they were following through on their promise to voters.

From "House takes up measure to restrict abortions" by Kathleen Hennessey, Los Angeles Times 10/13/11

The House is slated to vote on the Protect Life Act, which would amend the new healthcare law to prevent federal subsidies from being used to pay for any health insurance plan that covers abortion. The bill also offers legal protection for hospitals that refuse to perform abortions.

The measure is part of a continued effort to distance the federal government and its dollars from healthcare providers that perform the procedure. Its provisions are similar to legislation already passed by the House in May. The Senate blocked the bill and is expected to do the same to this legislation.

Advocates argue Republicans are trying to codify and expand on the long-standing policy known as the Hyde Amendment, which bars the use of federal money in Medicaid and other government programs for abortion -- except in cases of rape, incest or a danger to the life of the woman.

From "House Approves Bill to Stop Abortion Funding in Obamacare" by Steven Ertelt, LifeNews.com 10/13/11

H.R. 358, Protect Life Act, makes it clear that no funds authorized or appropriated by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), including tax credits and cost-sharing reductions, may be used to pay for abortion or abortion coverage. It specifies that individual people or state or local governments must purchase a separate elective abortion rider or insurance coverage that includes elective abortion but only as long as that is done with private funds and not monies authorized by Obamacare.

The bill also specifies that insurance issuers may offer health plans that include elective abortion and may offer separate elective abortion riders, so long as they ensure PPACA funds are not used for premiums or administrative costs. The bill also clarifies that issuers who offer elective abortion coverage must also offer a qualified health benefits plan that is identical except that it does not cover elective abortion.

The pro-life measure also ensures that state laws “protecting conscience rights, restricting or prohibiting abortion or coverage or funding of abortion, or establishing procedural requirements on abortion” are not abrogated by Obamacare. It also makes it so any state or local governments receiving funding under Obamacare may not subject any health care entity to discrimination or require any health plan to subject any entity to discrimination on the basis that it refuses to undergo abortion training, refuses to require abortion training, refuses to perform or pay for abortions, or refuses to provide abortion referrals.

Should Obama veto the bill, he would violate his own promise to support a ban on abortion funding under Obamacare.

Federal Health Official Arrested for Bestiality

44-year-old Kimberly Quinlan Lindsey, Deputy Director in the Office of Surveillance, Epidemiology and Laboratory Services of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and previously the Deputy Branch Chief in the CDC Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention, was arrested under charges for bestiality with two animals and sex acts involving a 6-year-old boy.

Kimberly Lindsey, 44, and her boyfriend, 42-year-old Thomas Westerman, turned themselves into police Sunday night, DeKalb County police said in a statement. Both were charged with two counts of child molestation. Lindsey was also charged with one count of bestiality, police said.

Westerman was released on Monday on a $15,000 bond, but Lindsey remained in jail on Tuesday on a $20,000 bond, police said. They will have a court hearing on December 1.

CDC spokesman Tom Skinner declined to comment on the case other than to confirm that Lindsey and Westerman work at the CDC.

The bestiality charge says Lindsey "did unlawfully perform or submit to any sexual act with an animal."

Prior to her current role, Lindsey was the senior health scientist in the Office of Public Health Preparedness and Response. That office oversees the allocation process for $1.5 billion in terrorism preparedness.

In her 12 years at the CDC, Lindsey has received 12 awards for outstanding performance on projects and programs, according to her bio on Emory University's Biological and Biomedical Sciences website. Lindsey earned her doctorate in immunology and molecular pathogenesis from the university in 1998, a year before she began work at the CDC.

From "Kimberly Lindsey Arrested: Bestiality, Child Molestation Charges Filed Against CDC Researcher" reported by Huffington Post 10/11/11

"The bestiality charge is a result of evidence recovered during the investigation," DeKalb County police Lt. Pamela Kunz told The Huffington Post.

Investigators allegedly found photographs of Lindsey performing lewd acts on two pets. The offenses did not involve the child, police said. Kunz declined to elaborate. "The investigation is still active and we are not releasing further details [on that charge]," she said.

The alleged sex acts involving the child took place between January 2010 and August 2011. The child would allegedly spank [the naked] Lindsey and use an electric sex toy on her.

What makes the allegations especially outstanding is that the accused doctor is a woman well-known in her field and highly regarded.

Since joining the CDC in 1999, Lindsey has received a dozen awards for outstanding performance.

America Embracing What Was Recently Called Sin

In the span of less than two generations, American public opinion has shifted from considering homosexual behavior as absolutely sinful, all of the time, to now considering same-sex marriage and sexual deviancy as normal and good.

. . . according to new research from a General Social Survey by NORC at the University of Chicago . . . 70 percent of Americans felt homosexuality was "always wrong" in 1973. That percentage dropped to 44 percent by 2010.

"There is a large generation gap on the issue [of same-sex marriage]," noted Tom W. Smith, director of the General Social Survey at NORC and author of the NORC report. While 64 percent of those under age 30 support gay marriage, just 27 percent of those aged 70 or older feel the same.

In 1988 there was an 11 percent approval rate for gay marriage. In 2010 there was a 46 percent approval rating.

The findings, based on a national survey of more than 2,000 people, also showed more general acceptance of homosexuality among younger people. In 2010, only 26 percent those under age 30 said they believed same-sex behavior is "always wrong." However, 63 percent of those 70 and older held that belief.

Support for a gay person's right to speak publically jumped to 86 percent in 2010 -- up from 62 percent in 1972. Meanwhile, support for homosexuals teaching at colleges or universities rose to 84 percent in 2010, up from 48 percent in 1973. The researchers also found more people approved of library books that cast a favorable light on homosexuality. Support for these books rose from 54 percent in 1973 to 78 percent in 2010.

Christian Wheaton College 'Gay Alumni' Homecoming

A recently formed homosexualist club of alumni of the Illinois college often referred to as "the Harvard for Evangelicals" showed up in force on homecoming weekend encouraging students to proudly declare their homosexuality.

“If you identify as GLBT and Christian, you do not have to choose,” said Ruth Wardschenk, an ’89 alumna who brought her daughter and partner to the event and sat on the panel. “You can have a partner or a spouse, you can have a family, you can have a church community.”

Hundreds of gay and lesbian Wheaton College alumni, students, staff, and supporters gathered at [St. Mark’s Episcopal] Glen Ellyn church on Friday night to kick off Homecoming weekend.

The gathering could be the first of many for the group, formed in early April to support current Wheaton students struggling with questions about their sexual orientation and as a networking resource for alums.

. . . José Vilanova graduated from Wheaton College in 1989 . . .

Like most Evangelical colleges, Wheaton maintains that homosexuality is not God's design for humanity. That's why Vilanova felt like he couldn't come out at the suburban-Chicago college.

Fast-forward 22 years and Vilanova is not only returning to campus — he's organizing a group outing. Literally. On Oct. 7, he and his partner of four years will meet up with 50 or so lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) alumni, along with their spouses, partners and children, for Wheaton's annual homecoming weekend. And during the group's inaugural gathering, its members won't be looking to blend in with the crowd. At the football game against Elmhurst College on Oct. 8, Wheaton's LGBT alums and their supporters will be wearing matching T-shirts emblazoned with the group's name, OneWheaton, and a rainbow.

OneWheaton's highly visible presence on campus puts the college in a difficult position. On the one hand, Wheaton students can still get kicked out for being openly and unrepentantly gay — administrators declined to tell TIME how many students had been asked to leave because of their sexual orientation — and reparative counseling is a common option before dismissal.

[Wheaton College President Philip] Ryken says he will not attend either of these OneWheaton events, he does plan to mingle with its members at the football game. Some student groups have already reached out to OneWheaton members.

. . . A handful of current faculty members and administrators have privately expressed a more affirming view of homosexuality, but declined to be named in this article since their beliefs would put their jobs on the line.

From "Gay and Lesbian Graduates to Make a Statement During Wheaton College's Alumni Event?" by Herbert Pinnock, Christian Post Contributor 10/7/11

The challenge for the Illinois Christian college is to be able to embrace all members of its alumni community while at the same time hold firm to its historical teachings on sexual morality.

In an email addressed to his Chicago campus community, Wheaton President Phillp Ryken said:

“Members of any family have areas of agreement and disagreement. This is true of Wheaton College’s relationship to OneWheaton, a group comprised of alumni but not affiliated with the College. As I have shared in an earlier campus communication, the College agrees with OneWheaton’s stated desire to ‘affirm the full humanity and dignity of every human being, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.’”

Ryken Continued:

“We also remain committed to the Bible’s teaching on sexual morality, which has anchored the church throughout its history and is described in our Community Covenant.”
