'Abortion Barbie' Candidate NOT Attractive to Women

Although Texas state Senator Wendy Davis became the beloved doll face of the abortion-supporting media for her filibuster against a new pro-life state law last year, this week her failed Democrat candidacy for governor proved ineffective among Texas female voters.
"I don't understand at this point where we lost [the women's vote]."
-- Patsy Woods Martin, executive director of Annie's List (heavy financial contributor to Davis)

“There was this belief after 2012 that if you waved this turnout wand you would wake up some progressive majority. It didn’t exist.”
-- Glenn Smith, Democrat consultant, Austin, TX

-- From "Wendy Davis lost badly. Here’s how it happened" by Jay Root, The Texas Tribune (Washington Post) 11/6/14

[The Wendy Davis campaign strategy:] Thanks to the filibuster, Davis was already well-known, so she wouldn’t have to spend so much money pumping up her name ID. With [incumbent Governor Rick] Perry declining to seek re-election, Davis was competing in the first open governor’s race since [Ann] Richards was elected. Her opponent, while exceptionally well-funded, was largely untested in high-profile political battles.

. . . for more than a year, Democrats were crowing that with a well-funded turnout operation, Davis was the kind of candidate who could at least move the needle for the bedraggled party, which hadn’t won a statewide election since 1994. In one sense they were correct: She moved the needle, all right — backward.

The spread between [governor-elect] Attorney General Greg Abbott and Davis exceeded 20 points, greater than the split between Republican Gov. Rick Perry and Democrat Bill White in the historic tea party wave four years ago. In fact, it was the worst showing by a Democratic gubernatorial candidate since Garry Mauro’s 68 percent-to-31 percent drubbing at the hands of George W. Bush in 1998.

If the campaign telegraphed early caution on the abortion issue, Davis threw it to the wind two months out from Election Day, when she released a memoir about her own late abortion in 1997. She went on a weeklong book tour that inevitably focused on abortion rights, followed up by another week spent on the same subject — namely, bashing Abbott for opposing abortion even in cases of rape or incest.

From "Texas' Davis failed to move needle with women" by Paul J. Weber, Associated Press 11/6/14

Exit polls show Davis fared no better with women than her male Democratic predecessor in 2010, despite being one of the most recognizable female candidates in the U.S. and a campaign that aggressively courted women with gender issues and attention-grabbing ads.

Republican Attorney General Greg Abbott won 54 percent of female voters — roughly the same edge Gov. Rick Perry had with women four years ago. And Abbott's advantage wasn't just among Republican women: He carried roughly double the support that Davis pulled with women who described themselves as politically independent.

Abbott clobbered Davis by a 20-point margin that is the widest in a Texas governor's race since George W. Bush coasted to re-election in 1998. The Fort Worth state senator was a perennial underdog, but few expected her to finish worse than a string of lesser-known longshots whom Texas Democrats have put at the top of the ticket in their two hapless decades since Ann Richards.

[Davis] hammered Abbott, the state attorney general, on equal pay in his office and denounced him for not supporting a Texas version of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. She spent two weeks touring rape crisis centers. Her first statewide TV ad featured a shadowy dramatization of a vacuum cleaner salesman who raped a Texas mother whom Abbott later sided against in a lawsuit when he was a Texas Supreme Court justice.

From "Wendy Davis, Face of the Phony 'War on Women' Mantra, Loses With Women" by Steven Ertelt, LifeNews.com 11/5/14

Wendy Davis was the canary in the coal mine. Poll after poll showed she had virtually no chance of winning the Texas gubernatorial race even though the Planned Parenthood abortion business went out of its way to pump up her campaign.

Davis’ opponent, governor-elect Greg Abbott, won women by (at the time of this writing) 9 points, according to CNN exit polls. Davis only won unmarried women by 14 points, while Abbott won married women by 25 points.

As Marjorie Dannenfelser of SBA List told LifeNews, “Last night’s overwhelming victory for pro-life candidates showed the abortion-centered ‘war on women’ strategy has completely failed.”

“SBA List added a third pro-life woman to the Senate with Joni Ernst’s victory in Iowa. We strengthened pro-life women’s leadership in the House, electing women like Mia Love (UT-04) and Elise Stefanik (NY-21). Mia, the first black Republican congresswoman and Elise, the youngest woman ever elected to the House are both pro-life. Where is this so-called ‘war on women’?” she asked.

Satanists For Abortion Shout Down Texas Christians

Last week, the media worshiped the Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis for leading a mob attack against the overwhelming majority of citizens and their legislators passing a pro-life law limiting late-term abortion.  This week, Satan-worshiping professional anarchists recruited by Planned Parenthood faced off against pro-life Christians in a public demonstration.

State Sen. Wendy Davis, a Democrat who led last week's dramatic political charge and became a newly minted heroine of abortion rights in the process . . . talked for more than 10 hours last Tuesday in helping to run out out the clock on the legislation that would be one of the most restrictive anti-abortion laws in the country, if approved.

The last ditch attempt by Senate Republicans to pass it before a midnight deadline was thwarted by spectators in the Captiol chanting "shame! shame! shame!"

The shouting, which Perry described as "unprecedented anarchy" marked an unprecedented moment in the Capitol, but the governor insisted it won't derail the bill.

But Davis told CNN that she and Democratic allies had "a few tricks up their sleeves." She declined to offer details . . .

From "Republicans move abortion bill forward" by David Saleh Rauf, San Antonio Express-News 7/4/13

A sweeping package of abortion restrictions was approved by a House panel early Wednesday, capping an hours-long hearing of emotional testimony.

The Republican-led panel was poised to eventually move forward with the abortion restrictions, which would ban the procedure at 20 weeks and would require costly upgrades to Texas abortion clinics that activists say would cause the closure of all but five in the state.

Outside the Capitol in a courtyard close to the hearing room, activists from both sides of the issue roared late into the night, chanting and singing.

At one point, a small group of pro-abortion-rights supporters in the background reportedly started chanting, “Hail Satan,” to drown out speeches emanating from a circle of anti-abortion activists.

From "Abortion Supporters Chant 'Hail Satan' in Texas Capitol as Pro-Lifers Sing 'Amazing Grace'" by Leonardo Blair, Christian Post Reporter 7/3/13

On Tuesday, the pro-abortion supporters went from riotous to sacrilegious when they chanted "Hail Satan" repeatedly in a bid to silence Christian pro-lifers who were singing "Amazing Grace" in support of abortion restrictions in the state.

. . . The legislation would also require that abortions be performed at ambulatory surgical centers and mandate that doctors obtain admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles of their practice. Opponents of the proposal argue that the proposal would virtually shut down abortion clinics in that state and pro-life supporters have no problem with that.

"The world has seen images of pro-abortion activists screaming, cheering," Republican Gov. Rick Perry noted, in an earlier report in which he vowed that the process would not be derailed a second time. "Going forward, we have to match their intensity, but do it with grace and civility."

Texas Law Tells Schools to Ignore Atheist Threats

House Bill 308, signed this week by Gov. Rick Perry, is necessary due to a flood of intimidation tactics nationwide by a variety of atheist lawyer organizations aimed at silencing Christians in public schools. The law assures Texas school officials that the U.S. Supreme Court has repeatedly upheld the constitutionality of religious freedom in schools.

-- From "Gov. Perry signs 'Merry Christmas' bill into law" by The Associated Press 6/14/13

The governor signed into law a bipartisan bill removing any legal risks of saying "Merry Christmas" in Texas public schools. He says "religious freedom does not mean freedom from religion."

Traditional holiday symbols, such as a menorah or Nativity scene, also are protected, so long as more than one religion and a secular symbol are also reflected.

The bill's sponsor, Houston Republican Rep. Dwayne Bohac, says he drafted the legislation after his eight-year-old son Reagan told him that his public school had decorated a "holiday tree" with "holiday ornaments."

The act, which does not change current law, is intended to reassure school districts that have limited holiday displays – including greetings such as “Merry Christmas” and “Happy Hanukkah” – over fears of litigation.

“It’s a shame that a bill like this one I’m signing today is even required,” [Gov. Rick] Perry said. “But I am proud that we’re standing up for religious freedom in this state.”

“This is just political correctness that’s run amok, and our brains have completely fallen out as a result,” Bohac said. “So this bill seeks to restore some sanity to our civil discourse.”

From "Christmas Comes Early in Texas, As Gov. Perry Signs Religious Freedom Bill" by Susan Jones, CNSNews.com 6/14/13

The bill states: "A school district may educate students about the history of traditional winter celebrations, and allow students and district staff to offer traditional greetings regarding the celebrations, including: (1) "Merry Christmas"; (2) "Happy Hanukkah"; and (3) "happy holidays."

Supporters of the bill argue that allowing teachers to display various holiday symbols associated with certain religions makes it possible for them to educate students about the history and roots of different religions.

Bill sponsor Sen. Robert Nichols said the bill will help teachers and administrators "feel safe talking about these holidays at school without fear of legal action being taken against them, and of letting our children know that it's okay to say ‘Merry Christmas.'"

Pres. Candidates Push Personhood, End of Abortion

Unreported by the mainstream media, in Tuesday's Presidential Pro-Life Forum organized by PersonhoodUSA, Michele Bachmann, Newt Gingrich, Rick Perry and Rick Santorum each stated unequivocally that if elected president they would take all actions possible to define unborn humans as "persons" from conception.

In November, 58 percent of voters in Mississippi rejected a so-called “personhood amendment,”
which stated that human life begins at the moment of fertilization and gave human embryos all of the legal protections of a person. Destroying an embryo by any means would be considered murder.

The amendment would have outlawed abortion even in cases of rape and incest, as well as embryonic stem-cell research.

Mitt Romney has ducked the issue, arguing that human life begins at conception but concluding that such decisions should be made at the state rather than federal level. Jon Huntsman has said the personhood movement “goes too far.”

Four GOP presidential candidates discussed their pro-life views with about 25,000 participants in a tele-town hall sponsored by Personhood USA that was also broadcast on a conservative talk radio show on Tuesday night.

All four had previously signed a "personhood" pledge distributed by Personhood USA, declaring they would pursue legislation to declare that life begins at fertilization, if elected president.

Bachmann was the only candidate to call out rivals for their inconsistency on the pro-life issue. Secure in her record and demonstrating an obvious grasp of the key words and issues pro-life voters care about, she discussed the importance of not relegating pro-lifers to the sidelines.

Santorum, well known for arguing the pro-life cause during his time in the Senate, also sought to convince voters of his bona fides.

Republican presidential candidates Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry said during a GOP candidates forum Tuesday night that the Supreme Court should not be able to challenge anti-abortion measures.

Gingrich said legislation he would support as president would prohibit judicial review. Perry simply asserted that he would ignore a negative ruling by the Supreme Court in such a case.

. . . the Texas governor responded that “obviously, you would enforce the right to life” rather than the court’s decision.

As for Gingrich, the former House Speaker said the solution would be to “write the bill so it is not appealable.”

Obama Stiffs Texas for Defunding Planned Parenthood

The Obama administration has yanked federal Title X family planning funds from Texas for its Medicaid Women’s Health Program because a new Texas law requires participating health providers NOT “perform or promote elective abortions or affiliate with entities that perform or promote elective abortions.”

-- From "Perry Chides Administration for Turning Down Texas Family Planning Proposal" posted at FoxNews.com 12/13/11

Texas Gov. Rick Perry accused the Obama administration of "holding women's health hostage" for the sake of a "pro-abortion agenda" . . .

The Obama administration reportedly claimed doing so would constitute a violation of the Social Security Act.

"Not applying these provisions would eliminate Medicaid beneficiaries’ ability to receive family planning services from specific providers for reasons not related to their qualifications to provide such services," the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services said in a letter.

"We are committed to protecting life in Texas, and state law prohibits giving state dollars to abortion providers and affiliates -- a fact the Obama administration ignores," Perry said. "I strongly urge the administration to do the right thing and grant this waiver, so Texas women can access critical preventative health services, including breast and cervical cancer screenings, rather than making them pay the price for its pro-abortion agenda."

In one letter sent to the Texas Health and Human Services Commission on Monday, Cindy Mann, director of the Center for Medicaid and CHIP Services, said the state’s request to circumvent federal rules -- namely the Social Security Act -- by restricting family planning providers in the Medicaid Women’s Health Program was not acceptable. The state’s request was in keeping with lawmakers’ efforts last legislative session to try to force Planned Parenthood, which provides abortions at some of its facilities, but in none affiliated with the Women’s Health Program, out of business.

Tom Suehs, HHSC’s executive commissioner, said in a statement that his agency is disappointed with the family planning decision, “which is inconsistent with federal law that gives states the authority to establish qualifications for Medicaid providers.”

From "Obama Admin Blocks Texas’ De-Funding of Planned Parenthood" by Steven Ertelt, LifeNews.com 12/12/11

Earlier this year, Texas yanked about $64 million in funding from Planned Parenthood and directed the funds to agencies that do not do abortions. In conjunction with that, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission submitted a request to the Center for Medicaid and CHIP Services to continue its family planning program without funding Planned Parenthood or other abortion agencies.

As it has in Indiana and New Hampshire, the Obama administration denied the request . . .

Joe Pojman, the director of Texas Alliance for Life [said] “We believe the State of Texas has every right to deny millions of tax dollars to Planned Parenthood, which is what the Texas Legislature and Governor Perry has chosen to do. Senate Bill 7, passed last summer during a special legislative session, prohibits Medicaid tax dollars under the Women’s Health Program from going to abortion providers and their affiliated organizations.”

“This bill excludes several dozen Planned Parenthood sites from the Women’s Health Program, but it does not exclude any other hundreds of Women’s Health Program providers in Texas. Many of the other providers offer comprehensive primary and preventative care to low-income women in addition to family planning, which Planned Parenthood is unable or unwilling to provide,” he continued. “By threatening to cancel the Women’s Health Program in Texas, the Obama Administration is showing it would sooner deny tens of millions of dollars of medical services to low-income women rather than allow the State of Texas to cut off tax funding to Planned Parenthood.”

The Texas de-funding has already resulted in the closing of 12 Planned Parenthood centers.

The Susan B. Anthony List today criticized the Obama Administration for what it calls “its latest assault on the right of states—this time Texas—to pass legislation that would defund abortion-provider Planned Parenthood of taxpayer funding.”

“President Obama has proven time and again that he will exert whatever force necessary to ensure that his abortion ally Planned Parenthood continues to receive taxpayer subsidies,” said Susan B. Anthony List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “This includes brazenly defying the will of states to make their own decisions as to where they send taxpayer funding. Once again the most pro-abortion President in our country’s history has shown his allegiance to Planned Parenthood is unwavering.”

“Including New Hampshire, eight states have successfully cut Planned Parenthood’s funding to the tune of nearly $60.4 million dollars. . . . ” she added.

As President, I’ll end Obama’s war on religion. And I’ll fight against liberal attacks on our religious heritage. Faith made America strong. It can make her strong again.”

The hit on gay rights has become a staple of Perry's faith pitch, after getting a hard push yesterday, but the comment about Obama's "war on religion" will rather easily be read as trying underscore the perception among some voters of the president as "different," and a reminder of the smears that the Christian chief executive is really a Muslim.

Bill Burton, a former Obama White House aide who now runs a super PAC supportive of the president, tweeted that the Perry ad was “astonishingly intolerant”.

Perry, of course, has often straddled this line in his campaign (and before it). He held a large gathering of evangelicals at Reliant Stadium in Houston shortly before entering the presidential race. And, early in his campaign, a pastor who was supporting Perry suggested former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney’s Mormon religion was a cult.

Of course, part of the coverage of the ad — whether intentional on the part of Perry’s campaign or not — will re-inject religion into the Republican race.

Republican presidential candidates have spent much of 2011 trying to woo the evangelical Christians, who backed former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee in 2008 but haven’t yet settled on a candidate in this election. So far, the courting has been relatively restrained.

But with a month to go until the Iowa caucuses and Mr. Perry polling a distant fourth, his campaign has little time for subtlety. Playing up the governor’s evangelical bona fides could tap into some Christians’ discomfort with the faith of Mitt Romney, a practicing Mormon, and their unease with Newt Gingrich’s three marriages. The ad is running on Iowa TV stations and Fox News nationally.

Perry ties his faith to his conservative stands on social issues, and the campaign has zeroed in on gay marriage and social issues recently, releasing several statements laying out its argument that Obama is attacking the fundamentals social conservative believe in. The arguments range from President Obama directing the Justice Department to stop arguing for the Defense of Marriage Act, to less substantive examples like Obama leaving God out of his Thanksgiving speech this year.

In one emailed statement, Perry stated, "just when you thought Barack Obama couldn't get any more out of touch with America's values, AP reports his administration wants to make foreign aid decisions based on gay rights. This administration's war on traditional American values must stop. This is just the most recent example of an administration at war with people of faith in this country. Investing tax dollars promoting a lifestyle many Americas of faith find so deeply objectionable is wrong."Perry is referring to a presidential memorandum released by the White House, in which Obama has directed all agencies working abroad ensure U.S. diplomacy and aid programs "promote and protect" the rights of gays and lesbians.

Six non-Romney presidential candidates spoke Saturday at the Thanksgiving Family Forum in Des Moines, Iowa about many family issues including the sanctity of life and same-sex "marriage." The event, sponsored by the National Organization for Marriage and the Family Leader — a group led by a longtime activist who played a key role in organizing for caucuses winner Mike Huckabee four years ago — marked an accelerated pitch to a pivotal caucus voting bloc. In addition to Gingrich, Cain and Perry, the table included Ron Paul, Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum.

From "Republicans woo social conservatives in Iowa" by Thomas Beaumont, The Associated Press 11/20/11

At an event sponsored by an Iowa Christian group, the candidates tried at times to gain a political edge with potent Iowa conservatives. But some of the discussion turned uncharacteristically personal, with the would-be presidents tearfully revealing formative chapters that shaped their faith.

The format was a sharp departure from the 10 GOP debates that have already been held in the 2012 campaign. Instead of the rapid questions and timed answers of the televised debates, Saturday's forum was held around a large dining table on a stage with fall-themed decorations, aimed at resembling a family Thanksgiving dinner scene. Pollster Frank Luntz moderated the two-hour event, which often flowed conversationally.

Texas' two candidates, Rep. Ron Paul and Gov. Rick Perry, did not offer revealing chapters from their lives as the others did. Paul described his early life during the Depression in Pennsylvania, and Perry, his upbringing in rural west Texas. Perry also described feeling lost upon his discharge from the Air Force at age 27.

Santorum was the most aggressive in trying to establish political edge during the event, arguing that the president must be a cultural warrior pushing for social change that reflects the nation's Judeo-Christian heritage.

Despite the religious theme, the discussion nevertheless revealed deep divisions about the role of government in shaping the nation's culture, illustrated by the libertarian-leaning Paul's rejection of an activist presidency.

Saturday's Thanksgiving Family Forum is organized by a leading Iowa conservative, Bob Vander Plaats, and his group, the Family Leader.

Vander Plaats, a three-time gubernatorial candidate, founded Family Leader to be a galvanizing force for social conservatives ahead of the state's lead-off nominating caucuses. He also has his critics . . .

"In a lot of ways they’re not attacking Bob Vander Plaats, they’re attacking the one I serve," he said, according to the [Des Moines Register].

From "Controversial conservative Bob Vander Plaats and his organization The Family Leader" by Dave Price, WHO-TV13 (Des Moines) 11/18/11

Last year, Vander Plaats helped oust three state Supreme Court justices after the ruling allowing same sex marriages. But earlier this month his group's efforts to help a Republican candidate win a special election Senate race this month in eastern Iowa ended in a lopsided loss.

[Vander Plaats says] "This organization is not a Republican subsidiary. We're very focused on issues that affect the family."

Vander Plaats wants this forum and his group to be the voice for Iowans who believe in lifelong heterosexual marriage, no more abortions and no more homosexuality which the Family Leader labels "distorted sexual behavior".

Figuring out who's paying to keep the doors open and lights for the group is really tough. You can find a list of some of the donors but the way this is all structured, to find everybody is impossible. Iowa Ethics and Campaign Disclosure records show a wide range of donations from $5,000 from the Family Research Council and $5 from a woman, Kathleen Hedger, in Fort Madison, along with donations from hundreds of others with amounts in between. Vander Plaats said, "It's people who believe in our issues, believe in our cause, are motivated to cut the checks."

Those checks totaled more than a million dollars in contributions last year.

If American political campaigns reflect public opinion, the 2012 presidential election is shaping up as a choice between President Obama and one of several evangelical Christians, all of whom have now publicly announced that God has called him/her to the campaign; or, there's Mitt Romney, the leading Mormon candidate.

Mitt Romney vs. Christian Tea Party Candidates

From "Romney's rise challenges tea party's clout in GOP" by Charles Babington, Associated Press 10/15/11

On the surface, Romney's strength seems at odds with the tea party's fiery success in ousting Republicans seen as compromisers, and in making the House GOP caucus more ideological, even when its leaders plead for flexibility.

Romney defends the government's 2008 bank bailouts, plus the mandated health insurance he initiated as Massachusetts governor. He says he can work with "good Democrats." Although he later changed, Romney once supported abortion rights, gun control and gay rights.

These positions run counter to the beliefs and goals of many tea party activists scattered throughout the country. . . .

Polls of Republicans show Romney holding steady at about 25 percent, while Bachmann, Perry and Cain take turns making surges. "That tells me that 75 percent of the primary voters would really rather have someone else," said GOP lobbyist and consultant Mike McKenna.

God Leading Rick Perry to Presidency, Says Wife

Gov. Rick Perry's wife Anita told him that she and other Christians have recognized that God has called him to run for president and that he is being brutalized by political opponents and the media so that God's will is clear once he's elected.

-- From "Anita Perry says husband 'brutalized' for faith" by Kevin Liptak, CNN 10/13/11

Anita Perry pointed the finger at fellow Republicans, who she said took issue with the governor's strong conservative Christian stance.

"We are being brutalized by our opponents, and our own party," Perry said. "So much of that is, I think they look at him, because of his faith. He is the only true conservative – well, there are some conservatives. And they're there for good reasons. And they may feel like God called them too. But I truly feel like we are here for that purpose."

Perry grew teary when relating stories from her childhood, saying her father was a deacon at a local church and that she never missed Sunday school as a girl.

She said Perry relied on prayer when deciding whether or not to enter the GOP race.

Anita Perry said that God had called her husband to run for president and likened the decision to encountering “a burning bush.” She said that God was testing Perry with his current difficulties.

Perry has credited his wife with encouraging him to run for president and has said he was called to run, but he stopped short of saying that God called him.

In an emotional recounting of the Texas governor’s decision to run for president, Anita Perry said the Lord spoke to her before persuading her husband to run.

“God was already speaking to me but he (Rick) didn’t want to hear it,” she told the sympathetic audience. “I said you may not see that burning bush, but there are people seeing that burning bush for you.”

Anita Perry told about 20 people gathered for eggs, bacon and cheese grits at the Baptist college in northern Greenville County how a person came up to her husband on the campaign trail last week, handed him a Bible verse and said, “God is testing you right now. God is testing you because He wants you to know when you are in the White House how you got there.”

Asked later by a reporter if she believed the message, Anita Perry said, “Absolutely.”

She also told the audience that her husband “really prayed about it” before deciding to enter the GOP contest.

“He threw that fleece out there twice,” she told the Baptists, referring to the method Gideon used in the Old Testament to determine God’s will.

From "Anita Perry, Rick Perry and that biblical fleece -- explained" by Tami Dennis, Los Angeles Times 10/14/11

. . . In the biblical chapter Judges, an angel has appeared to Gideon, telling him to head off to battle and save the Israelites. The Israelites, it should be pointed out, have been behaving badly and have gotten themselves into considerable trouble.

Not being a rash man, Gideon wants to make quite sure that God will grant him victory. (The parallels are not coincidence -- hence, one would assume, Anita Perry's point.)

As for that burning bush -- Moses, remember? If you don't, and you follow politics, you might want to consider bookmarking those Bible sites. Election day is still a long way off.

Presidential Candidates Address Christians in D.C.

All of the Republican presidential hopefuls (except RINO Jon Huntsman) addressed the Values Voters Summit in D.C. this weekend. While every candidate presented solutions for the dire economic condition of the country, they also addressed the moral bankruptcy of America including their support for religious liberty, the sanctity of life (anti-abortion) and the sanctity of marriage between one man and one woman.

This weeked, social conservatives are gathering in Washington, D.C. for the Values Voters summit, a big three-day confab organized by the Family Research Council. But the high-profile event comes during a campaign in which social issues have been all but ignored.

Social issues have not turned into wedges between the candidates as is typical in GOP primaries. Earlier this year, most candidates refused to sign an influential Iowa conservative group’s controversial gay marriage pledge. Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney has not taken heat for his past support of abortion rights; former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has received little criticism for his multiple divorces.

And those religious voters, while likely wary of Romney, may not be fully satisfied with Perry either. While Perry held a high-profile Christian event just weeks before entering the race, he has largely avoided social issues since his announcement. His team has argued that only attacks related to jobs and the economy will resonate with voters.

The candidate most tied to social conservatives, former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum, has never really gotten much traction. Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), an evangelical with appeal to the movement, has collapsed in recent weeks. She gave a speech on abortion rights earlier this week; all the questions were about her staff depatures.

From "Rick Perry picks up key supporter at Values Voter Summit" by Kim Geiger, Los Angeles Times 10/7/11

Robert Jeffress, senior pastor of the First Baptist Church in Dallas, called Perry “a proven leader” who embodies the three attributes that matter to social conservatives: a “genuine commitment to biblical values,” competency to govern, and electability.

Jeffress called Perry “a genuine follower of Jesus Christ,” in a not-so-subtle swipe at Romney, who is Mormon.

“For more than a generation, our culture has emphasized a message of self-indulgence at the expense of social obligation,” Perry said. “…The fabric of our society is not government or individual freedom. It is the family. And the demise of the family is the demise of any great society.”

Perry also won a standing ovation when he declared that he “was proud to sign a budget that defunded Planned Parenthood in Texas.”

From "GOP campaigns court ‘values voters’ at D.C. summit" by Daniel Burke, Religion News Service 10/7/11

Several GOP presidential candidates sought to kick-start their stalling campaigns on Friday (Oct. 7) by preaching a gospel of low taxes and conservative Christian values to a summit of Tea Partiers, religious right activists and beltway insiders.

Perry also highlighted the anti-abortion positions he has taken as governor, including the defunding of Planned Parenthood, which drew a standing ovation from the crowd of 3,000 social conservatives here.

[Rick] Santorum, who placed seventh among GOP candidates in a recent Washington Post/ABC poll, cast himself as a veteran culture warrior who has consistently fought for socially conservative values.

A Roman Catholic, Santorum devoted much of his speech to recounting his successful push in the Senate to pass the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act, which President Bush signed into law in 2003.

From "Herman Cain Rocks the House at Values Voter Summit" by Molly Ball, The Atlantic 10/7/11

Many other speakers got standing ovations, but only Cain provoked church-like shouts of "Yeah!" from the crowd. When Newt Gingrich came up to speak after Cain, a good portion of the crowd got up and wandered out of the giant ballroom at the Omni Shoreham Hotel here in Washington.

The Cain surge has also provoked a round of media hand-wringing over whether, and how much, to "take him seriously" as a contender, or whether it was still safe to treat him primarily as a man trying to sell books and perhaps get himself a television show.

The pundits, he noted, say "Herman Cain cannot get the nomination, Herman Cain cannot win the presidency because he doesn't have high name ID. He doesn't have a katrillion dollars. He's never held office. Let me tell you what the American people are saying. They don't care about a katrillion dollars -- America wants to raise some Cain, not raise some money!"

The audience at this convention for socially conservative voters leaped to their feet time and again, screaming and chanting along with the businessman who just weeks ago was largely unknown to voters, but has now climbed to the top tier of candidates in the presidential race.

Cain minced no words in laying out his views on social issues at a conference focused on opposition to abortion, same-sex marriage and departure from Christian values.

"I believe in life from conception, period, no exception. I believe that marriage is between one man and one woman," he said.

The same day that Romney gave a major foreign policy speech aimed at bulking up his hawkish credentials, Cain laid out his philosophy, invoking former President Ronald Reagan, and calling his philosophy "peace through strength and clarity."

Sexual Immorality Causes Cancer: HPV Epidemic

As the liberal media highlighted the heated presidential candidate debate concerning mandatory HPV vaccinations for pre-teens, they inadvertently damaged their own sexualization agenda, and so they've retrenched and are now reporting the cancer-causing effects of HPV infection -- insisting that all girls and boys be vaccinated ASAP. What the media refuse to acknowledge is that abstinence is 100% effective in stopping this sexually transmitted virus.

The problem is rooted in a culture that demands acceptance of sexual immorality.

UPDATE 10/3/11: Over 10,000 cancer cases each year possibly caused by oral sex

. . . an increasing number of men in their 30s and 40s [where] cancer was invading the lymph nodes in his neck.

Dr. Robert Haddad at the Dana Farber Cancer Center said he considers the rise in cases among men an epidemic.

"Fifteen years ago, almost every patient we saw with head and neck cancer was a smoker or drinker. Right now, in 2011, 20 percent of patients are smokers and drinkers and the other 80 percent get this cancer because of HPV infection," Haddad said.

The Centers for Disease Control estimates that 24 million people in the U.S. are infected with HPV at any given time. It's spread sexually, although some doctors believe it could ultimately become known as a kissing disease.

From "No apologies: Bachmann defends HPV remarks" by Sarah Huisenga, CBS News 9/15/11

Michele Bachmann is on the defensive about comments she made earlier this week suggesting that a vaccine against a virus linked to cervical cancer poses a danger to young girls.

During the Republican debate Bachmann attacked her rival Rick Perry for mandating vaccinations against the human papillomavirus vaccine (HPV) for Texas school girls - a decision that the Texas legislature later overruled.

"To have innocent little 12-year-old girls be forced to have a government injection through an executive order is just flat out wrong," she said during the debate.

Scientists have accused her of promulgating a flat Earth theory of medicine. At an appearance in Virginia on Wednesday, Perry told reporters that Bachmann's assertions had "no basis in fact."

From "HPV vaccine is essential" by The Star-Ledger Editorial Board 9/16/11

Yet none of [the media fury] changes a central fact: It’s essential that we vaccinate against HPV, which infects as much as half our population. More virulent strains are linked to cervical cancer, a killer of more than 4,000 women each year. The virus also causes genital warts, anal, throat and penile cancers in men.

It’s so easily spread that condoms don’t offer complete protection. Teaching abstinence before marriage doesn’t, either, unless you can guarantee your child’s future spouse has never had sexual contact with another person.

So why is it the vaccine that’s stirring up alarm? Because of mouthpieces of mythology such as Michele Bachmann, who suggested it causes mental retardation, despite a total lack of evidence. And religious conservatives who believe it will somehow turn innocent girls into strumpets.

In fact, we should be mandating this vaccine for all young girls — and boys, once their version is vetted.
