'I Felt Like Moses,' Says Herman Cain

Now leading in some national polls, presidential candidate Herman Cain says that God called him to run for president, and at first, just like Moses, he resisted.
“I have achieved all of my American dreams and then some because of the greatest nation, the United States of America.”

GOP presidential hopeful Herman Cain compared himself to Moses and said he's ready for "gotcha" questions now that he's risen in national polls on the race.

Cain, former CEO of Godfather's Pizza, told the Christian Broadcasting Network that God has been behind him since he decided to run for the White House.

"I felt like Moses when God said I want you to go into Egypt and lead my people out. Moses resisted. I resisted," Cain said in the interview.

Cain has risen in recent weeks as Texas Gov. Rick Perry has faded.

It's no wonder Cain's feeling like a prophet-- he dominated last month's Florida straw poll and impressed the audience at Friday's Values Voter Summit.

The GOP candidate told Christian Broadcasting Network that he's "ready for the 'gotcha' questions."

"When they ask me who is the president of Ubeki-beki-beki-beki-stan-stan I’m going to say you know, I don’t know. Do you know?" he said.

From "Rising Cain candidacy flips old narratives on politics and race" by Niall Stanage, The Hill 10/10/11

Polls in recent weeks have indicated that Cain has conspicuously strong backing among Republicans in the states of the old Confederacy. He has been a Tea Party darling virtually since the movement’s inception. And, as recently as Friday, he was cheered to the rafters by the deeply conservative, and almost uniformly white, attendees of the Values Voter Summit in Washington.

In his speech announcing his candidacy, back in May, he invoked Martin Luther King Jr. Were he to become president, he said, “we will finally be able to say, ‘Free at last, free at last, thank God Almighty, America is free at last.’”

The line deftly combined a nod to King’s legacy with the suggestion that true freedom for African-Americans would involve shaking off their resilient attachment to the Democratic Party.

Asked for her view on Cain’s rise, the American Enterprise Institute’s Karlyn Bowman, a polling expert, said, “I don’t think it’s especially surprising. He’s a very strong, very likable candidate. Romney seems a little cold. Perry seems a little hot. The fact that Cain is black is really irrelevant.”

[The excerpt below is] part of a fascinating interview with “The Hermanator” that I did Friday afternoon at the Values Voter Summit in Washington DC.

David Brody: “Where does God fit into this because you were a long shot and now jetting to the top of the polls? How do you see God’s role in all of this?

Herman Cain: “God’s been in this from the beginning because when I first started to feel that I needed to consider running I did a lot of praying. I felt like Moses when God said I want you to go into Egypt and lead my people out. Moses resisted. I resisted. Moses said you got the wrong person. You can’t be talking about me. I had these conversations with God in terms of, ‘Lord I’ve done a lot of things but are you sure’ but you shouldn’t question God. You should just make sure that’s the message. God has been in this since the beginning and my staff and I we say that all the time. There are certain things that happen along this journey that they couldn’t happen unless God was in it. I know that for a fact because of my life long faith.”

Prayer Vigil Saves Babies & Mothers from Abortion

The eighth annual "40 Days for Life" campaign to end abortion launches September 28 at an unprecedented 301 locations worldwide. Local volunteers are set to begin constant 24-hour prayer vigils outside abortion clinics in their respective cities from September 28 until November 6. Participants have also pledged to fast and pray privately during the crusade and to take part in community outreach programs as well.

“Alison, one of our core team members, said this save took place in the very first hour the abortion clinic was open after our campaign began,” Lisa said [from Grand Rapids, MI]. This is the fifth 40 Days for Life vigil at this location.

“We are blessed in Indianapolis to be able to share the love of Christ as we help women who have chosen life under difficult circumstances,” [Eileen Hartman] said. “We don’t walk away from these women after they have given birth. They know they can call on us long after their baby is born.”

David Bereit, national director of “40 Days for Life,” stopped in Alexandria Wednesday to meet with participants in a vigil to end abortion.

A lone protester across the street from the “40 Days for Life” group repeatedly shouted into a bullhorn, saying it was wrong to try to “legislate morality.” He also criticized the group for supporting Republican candidates who were “against the poor.”

“40 Days for Life” is a grassroots effort that invites local people to pray and fast for an end to abortion; hold constant, peaceful vigils outside abortion facilities and Planned Parenthood offices; and participate in community outreach.

"I am thrilled that people of faith and conscience across Minnesota are enthusiastically responding to this call to join the largest pro-life outreach effort in history," said Bereit in a news release, "and I very much look forward to speaking – and praying – with people launching local 40 Days for Life campaigns across the state."

The campaign website explains 40 Days for Life "takes a determined, peaceful approach to showing local communities the consequences of abortion in their own neighborhoods, for their own friends and families." Forty-eight new locations have been added to this year's international event, including cities in Argentina, Puerto Rico, and Germany.

Campaign organizers boast phenomenal success in the past, and they have high hopes for this year's substantially larger crusade. Campaign director Shawn Carney observed, "I often go back to those wonderful numbers — 4,313 lives saved from abortion, 53 clinic workers who've left the abortion industry, and 16 abortion centers that have gone out of business after 40 Days for Life's peaceful prayer vigils were held in the public right-of-way outside their doors." He anticipates tens of thousands will participate this year.

"We provide daily devotionals for prayer," he said. "For fasting, we leave it up to them, because it is a very personal thing."

The effort follows a pattern of biblical history in which God used 40-day periods to teach His people to recognize His power and trust in Him, 40 Days for Life officials say.

"My ultimate hope is to see abortion ended through the faithfulness of God's people," Bereit said.

More Young Americans for Traditional Values: Poll

[According to Gallup,] Americans between the ages of 18 and 34 are now more likely than Americans in older age brackets to say government should promote traditional values. This reverses the historical pattern in Gallup’s polling on this question.

-- From "Gallup: 'Recent Surge' of Young Adults Want Gov’t to ‘Promote Traditional Values’" posted at CNSNews.com 10/6/11

In a survey conducted Sept. 8-11, 2008, two months before Obama’s election, only 38 percent of young adults said they thought government should promote traditional values.

In a survey conducted Aug. 31-Sept. 2009, 41 percent said so; in 2010, 47 percent; and, this year, 53 percent.

Among the youngest age bracket published in Gallup’s weekly approval ratings of the president—those 18 to 29 years of age—Obama’s approval has dropped 28 points, from 75 percent the week he was inaugurated in January 2009 to 47 percent last week.

Presidential Candidates Address Christians in D.C.

All of the Republican presidential hopefuls (except RINO Jon Huntsman) addressed the Values Voters Summit in D.C. this weekend. While every candidate presented solutions for the dire economic condition of the country, they also addressed the moral bankruptcy of America including their support for religious liberty, the sanctity of life (anti-abortion) and the sanctity of marriage between one man and one woman.

This weeked, social conservatives are gathering in Washington, D.C. for the Values Voters summit, a big three-day confab organized by the Family Research Council. But the high-profile event comes during a campaign in which social issues have been all but ignored.

Social issues have not turned into wedges between the candidates as is typical in GOP primaries. Earlier this year, most candidates refused to sign an influential Iowa conservative group’s controversial gay marriage pledge. Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney has not taken heat for his past support of abortion rights; former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has received little criticism for his multiple divorces.

And those religious voters, while likely wary of Romney, may not be fully satisfied with Perry either. While Perry held a high-profile Christian event just weeks before entering the race, he has largely avoided social issues since his announcement. His team has argued that only attacks related to jobs and the economy will resonate with voters.

The candidate most tied to social conservatives, former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum, has never really gotten much traction. Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), an evangelical with appeal to the movement, has collapsed in recent weeks. She gave a speech on abortion rights earlier this week; all the questions were about her staff depatures.

Robert Jeffress, senior pastor of the First Baptist Church in Dallas, called Perry “a proven leader” who embodies the three attributes that matter to social conservatives: a “genuine commitment to biblical values,” competency to govern, and electability.

Jeffress called Perry “a genuine follower of Jesus Christ,” in a not-so-subtle swipe at Romney, who is Mormon.

“For more than a generation, our culture has emphasized a message of self-indulgence at the expense of social obligation,” Perry said. “…The fabric of our society is not government or individual freedom. It is the family. And the demise of the family is the demise of any great society.”

Perry also won a standing ovation when he declared that he “was proud to sign a budget that defunded Planned Parenthood in Texas.”

Several GOP presidential candidates sought to kick-start their stalling campaigns on Friday (Oct. 7) by preaching a gospel of low taxes and conservative Christian values to a summit of Tea Partiers, religious right activists and beltway insiders.

Perry also highlighted the anti-abortion positions he has taken as governor, including the defunding of Planned Parenthood, which drew a standing ovation from the crowd of 3,000 social conservatives here.

[Rick] Santorum, who placed seventh among GOP candidates in a recent Washington Post/ABC poll, cast himself as a veteran culture warrior who has consistently fought for socially conservative values.

A Roman Catholic, Santorum devoted much of his speech to recounting his successful push in the Senate to pass the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act, which President Bush signed into law in 2003.

Many other speakers got standing ovations, but only Cain provoked church-like shouts of "Yeah!" from the crowd. When Newt Gingrich came up to speak after Cain, a good portion of the crowd got up and wandered out of the giant ballroom at the Omni Shoreham Hotel here in Washington.

The Cain surge has also provoked a round of media hand-wringing over whether, and how much, to "take him seriously" as a contender, or whether it was still safe to treat him primarily as a man trying to sell books and perhaps get himself a television show.

The pundits, he noted, say "Herman Cain cannot get the nomination, Herman Cain cannot win the presidency because he doesn't have high name ID. He doesn't have a katrillion dollars. He's never held office. Let me tell you what the American people are saying. They don't care about a katrillion dollars -- America wants to raise some Cain, not raise some money!"

The audience at this convention for socially conservative voters leaped to their feet time and again, screaming and chanting along with the businessman who just weeks ago was largely unknown to voters, but has now climbed to the top tier of candidates in the presidential race.

Cain minced no words in laying out his views on social issues at a conference focused on opposition to abortion, same-sex marriage and departure from Christian values.

"I believe in life from conception, period, no exception. I believe that marriage is between one man and one woman," he said.

The same day that Romney gave a major foreign policy speech aimed at bulking up his hawkish credentials, Cain laid out his philosophy, invoking former President Ronald Reagan, and calling his philosophy "peace through strength and clarity."

The Tennessee chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union has entered the case on behalf of 17-year-old Chris Sigler and other Sequoyah High School students it says have been prevented by school officials from forming the alliance they call GSA [Gay-Straight Alliance]. It threatened a lawsuit unless the school agrees by Tuesday to respect the rights of students to peacefully state opinions.

Sigler and his family filed a police report over the Sept. 30 classroom confrontation with Principal Maurice Moser.

Sigler said Moser confronted him because it was the second time he wore a homemade shirt to school that said "GSA: We've got your back."

"They indicate what has been stated is not what happened. Most of what we've been able to ascertain, there's certainly another side of this incident," Cagle said.

In an Oct. 4 letter to Mike Lowry, Monroe County's director of schools, the ACLU indicated it will file a lawsuit if not given a satisfactory response by Oct. 11.

Steve Jobs: An Unexpected Pregnancy NOT Aborted

What would the world have been like had the Apple Computer founder never been born? Had a man like the late Steve Jobs, adopted as a newborn, been conceived in such an unwed mother in an age of Roe v. Wade, he would likely never had been born.

UPDATE 11/23/11: Steve Jobs wanted to find his birth mother to thank her "because I'm glad I didn't end up as an abortion. She was 23 and she went through a lot to have me."

-- From "Steve Jobs Changed the World: Adoption Changed His" by Ryan Bomberger, LifeNews.com 10/6/11

Jobs was adopted as a baby and loved by his parents, Clara and Paul Jobs. The baby they took into their hearts and home had a purpose in life that would be unleashed by the powerful act of adoption.

. . . The nation’s largest abortion chain, aborting 340 children for every 1 woman that is referred for adoption, is the antithesis to this purpose. Planned Parenthood celebrates their founder who believed that “we are paying for and even submitting to the dictates of an ever increasing, unceasingly spawning class of human beings who never should have been born at all.” Contrary to Margaret Sanger’s warped mentality that children are “marked when they’re born” as “diseased, delinquents, and felons”, none of us know the beautiful potential that every life possesses.

There are so many well-known adopted individuals that have impacted many of our lives in one way or another: Charles Dickens, George Washington Carver, Nat King Cole, Babe Ruth, Dave Thomas (Wendy’s), Bo Diddley (musician/performer), Dan O’Brien (Olympic Decathlon Gold Medalist) and Faith Hill, just to name a few. Steve Jobs is among this list of infinite possibility. No matter the perceived worldly success of an adoptee, adoption is a loving act that transforms, not only the life of the child, but the entire family. And, sometimes, the world.

Homosexuality NOT Fixed, Change Possible: Study

Many people who work in the field of psychology argue against the idea that a person can change their sexual orientation. [The study showing change is possible has] been challenged by other researchers who say that the bulk of the existing evidence indicates that sexual orientation does not change. Gay advocacy blogs have also disputed the findings.

The American Psychological Association declared in 2005 that homosexuality was not changeable. The association had also stated that there was no evidence that conversion or reparative therapy aimed at changing sexual orientation was safe or effective.

Eli Coleman, professor and director of Human Sexuality at the University of Minnesota Medical School was skeptical about the [new] findings.

“We’ve been through this over and over,” he said. “You can get behavioral changes, but that’s not orientation change. You can get short-term behavioral change. It’s not sustained.”

"I don’t think we have anything really new here," said Coleman. "We have known for sometime that some people are able to shift their behavior and their perception of their sexual identity through these attempts at conversion."

The study, conducted by psychologists Stanton L. Jones of Wheaton College and Mark A. Yarhouse of Regent University, examined changes in homosexuals who sought the help of Exodus International in trying to change their sexual orientation.

Twenty-three percent reported a successful “conversion” to heterosexual orientation, while 30 percent reported “stable behavioral chastity.” Twenty percent of the subjects, however, gave up on changing and fully embraced the gay identity.

"Our study ... does not prove that everyone can change,” Jones said in an interview with The Christian Post on Friday. “It just proves that the reality is very, very complicated, and there seems to be some capacity for some people to shift their sexual orientation in a way that has personal meaning to them."

Candace Chellew-Hodge, the founder of Whosoever, an Online Magazine for GLBT [homosexual] Christians, found firstly that the research was “suspect” as the researchers are from conservative Christian colleges. He showed his concern also for their conclusions being "overly optimistic."

Chellew-Hodge criticized the methodology saying the sample size was small and claimed that the results came from fear of the subjects. He said, “The single greatest motivator for these 98 subjects however most certainly was a fear-based one. In short, they were all living under the threat of hell.”

Jones responded to those, including the American Psychological Association (APA), who said that sexual orientation could not be changed, that no such research exists, and he wants to bring up that change is certainly possible.

“We were trying to address the basic question ‘Is change possible?’ The fact that anyone changed is what came out of this study,” he said.

Stem Cell Cloning, Buying Women's Eggs

Scientists in New York crossed ethical boundaries in research in which abnormal human clones were created, using eggs purchased from desperate women in need of money, in order to destroy the living matter to harvest embryonic stem cells.

-- From "Stem cell research used cloning technique, paid women for eggs" by Eryn Brown, Los Angeles Times 10/6/11

. . . The [research] team paid the women who provided the eggs used in the study, a practice that has been forbidden by ethical guidelines from scientific organizations around the world. Some ethicists have argued that paying women for their eggs might create an exploitative trade. But in this case, it may be the reason why the researchers were able to collect enough healthy eggs (they used 270 in all) to get their historic result.

Teams have "tried to recruit donors on altruistic grounds and failed," said New York Stem Cell Foundation researcher and study co-leader Dieter Egli, during a press conference on Tuesday. "That's why we knew it was not the way to go in New York."

To avoid exerting undue influence on the donors, the New York team paid them $8,000 for the time and burden of donation (which does pose risks), then allowed them to decide later if they wanted their eggs to be used for research or for reproduction. That way, the conversation about payment was already over before any talk about scientific research began.

From "Scientists report possibly crucial advance in human embryonic stem cell research" by Rob Stein, Washington Post 10/5/11

Scientists reported Wednesday that for the first time they had used cloning techniques to generate embryonic stem cells containing the genes of specific patients.

The experiments, which produced genetically abnormal cells useful only for research, have raised new concerns in a field rife with ethical, moral and political quandaries.

For the first time, scientists paid women for their eggs to use for human embryonic stem cell research, stirring worries about women being exploited and putting their health at risk. And they made the stem cells by producing and then destroying mutant embryos. Because of their genetic abnormalities, those embryos could not have survived. Their moral status immediately became the subject of debate.

“They have created human embryos. They are abnormal, but they are still human embryos,” said Daniel P. Sulmasy, a professor of medicine and ethics at the University of Chicago. “Anyone who is opposed to the deliberate creation and destruction of human embryos, as I am, would be opposed to this research.”

HYUN: Well, some people may think that we are now down a slippery slope toward getting cloned babies. And that's certainly a major concern for policymakers and the public.

RAZ: So explain the thinking behind the restrictions on paying women to donate eggs for this kind of research.

HYUN: The main concern is that when you put money on the table, women would not give a fully voluntary choice to participate. So the idea is that paying women for the time and inconvenience may be exploitative of women who are in desperate need of money. That's the main concern, that it undermines people's voluntary choice.

When asked the appropriateness of the material, [Supt. Dr. Michael] Hinojosa said that the district likes to give teachers autonomy when given supplemental materials approved by the state.

“We feel that if they’re provided by the state, they ought to be pretty legitimate,” he said, adding that he was surprised by Georgia superintendent Dr. John Barge’s statement in Thursday’s Atlanta Journal-Constitution saying that he didn’t agree with the lesson.

“I understand that some Westerners condemn our practice of polygamy, but I also know they are wrong,” the [Muslim] woman writes [in the school lesson].

State school Superintendent John Barge told Channel 2 that the lesson was approved before he took office, and he would not have allowed it to be sent home with students for an assignment on dress codes. Nor, he added, was it appropriate for middle school students.

The superintendent said the state school board at its next meeting would discuss the issue and the process for removing materials that had previously been approved.

In a previous interview with the AJC, Dale Gaddis, Cobb area assistant superintendent, said schools are tasked with teaching Middle Eastern cultures, and doing so requires talking about the religions of those cultures.

From "Islamizing the Curriculum in Georgia" by Pamela Geller, American Thinker 9/29/11

. . . It is time our children were taught about the 270 million victims of over a millennium of jihadi wars, land appropriations, cultural annihilations, and enslavements. And the systematic dehumanization of women: honor killings, clitorectomies, and so much more. Where is the caning? Where is the prohibition of women leaving the house without a male family member? Where is the prohibition of women driving?

This document [referenced in the Campbell Middle School incident] was hosted on a public school district's official website. When we called attention to it, the lesson was quickly pulled and scrubbed from the web. But I have screenshots of everything, because I knew that as soon as I exposed this dawah (Islamic proselytizing), the school official quislings would scrub this material. And they did -- so they know that what they are promoting is wrong.

According to parents, a coach from a nearby [Georgia] high school, a Muslim American, was invited to at least one class to talk about his trip to Mecca. A parent complained to the principal and a school board member with no result. The excuse is "we're studying the culture of the Middle East."

No 'Gay Marriage' Says Military Archdiocese

The Catholic Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, says it will continue to hold firm on marriage at the Catholic Chapel of the Most Holy Trinity at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

But homosexualists won't stand for this. The recent acceptance of sexual deviancy in the military is not enough, they say, as they garner their forces to repeal the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

-- From "No Same-Sex Weddings at West Point's Catholic Chapel, Says Military Archdiocese" by Pete Winn, CNSNews.com 10/3/11

“Holy Trinity is an actual Catholic parish, unlike the non-denominational chapels that are found on other military installations, and the only services held there are Catholic services. The Catholic Church does not perform the sacrament of matrimony for same-sex couples,” [said Taylor Henry, director of public affairs and media relations for the Archdiocese].

What about other Catholic chapels on other military bases?

“What non-Catholic chaplains do in nondenominational chapels on U.S. military grounds around the world will be up to the military, but no Catholic chaplain is authorized to perform a same-sex marriage under any circumstances,” Henry added.

[Military Services] Archbishop Broglio, meanwhile, has denounced directives issued last week by Under Secretary of Defense Clifford Stanley and DoD General Counsel Jeh Johnson clearing military chaplains to perform same-sex weddings in military chapels.

“The Pentagon's new policy, as outlined in these two memos, appears to ignore the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which was signed into law 15 years ago and remains in effect,” Broglio said in a statement released last week.

From "Repealing DADT Is a Major Step Forward, But There's Still More Work to Be Done" by Christine C. Quinn (the lesbian speaker of the New York City Council) 10/4/11

The repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell sends an important message . . . But while this is a big step forward for the gay and lesbian service members, and the country at large, the repeal of DADT still doesn't mean complete equality in our armed forces.

. . . the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) prevents the military from recognizing same-sex marriages. Even if a service member marries in a state that legally allows same-sex marriage (something, I am proud to say we recently passed in New York), their spouses will receive limited benefits.

[DOMA] reminds us that as far as we have come, we are still a long way from granting full equality to our LGBT service members.

From "Gay couples, allies set eyes on ultimate prize: Marriage" by Curtis Tate, McClatchy Newspapers 10/3/11

Now that the U.S. military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy is history, gay rights advocates and their supporters in Congress and the Obama administration are shifting their focus to repealing state and federal laws that define marriage as between one man and one woman.

President Barack Obama, while stopping short of a full endorsement of same-sex marriage, told one of the nation's leading gay rights organizations Saturday that he would work to repeal the law. Earlier this year, his Justice Department said it would stop defending it in court.

"I believe the law runs counter to the Constitution, and it's time for it to end once and for all," Obama said at the Human Rights Campaign's annual dinner Saturday in Washington. "It should join 'don't ask, don't tell' in the history books."

Federal law permits states to define marriage any way they choose, and 37 of the 50 states have defined marriage as between one man and one woman.

Hiring Only Christians for Missions Org. OK: Supreme Court

World Vision, with over 40,000 employees supplying Christian aid and relief worldwide, has been given the nod by the U.S. Supreme Court to hire and fire based on religious belief and requiring employees to sign a statement of faith.

-- From "Supreme Court Rejects Appeal of Religious Hiring Exemption" by The Associated Press 10/3/11

The Supreme Court has let stand a lower court ruling that found World Vision can fire employees who disagree with its Christian doctrinal statement.

Three fired employees [Sylvia Spencer, Vicki Hulse and Ted Youngberg] sued World Vision in 2007, arguing that the charity's main focus was on relief rather than religious work, so it should not be allowed to hire only fellow believers.

But last year, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected the plaintiffs' claim [in a 2-1 decision] and on Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear their appeal.

Stearns, in his Monday statement, said that this hiring policy is "... vital to the integrity of our mission to serve the poor as followers of Jesus Christ."

The former employees initially signed a statement of faith but then were terminated after they no longer could affirm their beliefs in the deity of Jesus Christ, nor the Trinity.

Defund Abortionist PP: Congress to Battle Again

After failing last spring to strip Planned Parenthood of over $300 million in annual federal funding, the House Republicans have included a new defunding provision in the draft budget concerning "Title X funding," setting the stage again for a showdown with Senate Democrats within weeks.

-- From "House Republicans Seek to Defund Planned Parenthood, NPR" by Dan Rivoli, International Business Times 9/30/11

Planned Parenthood would be banned from receiving federal funds unless the organization certifies it will end abortion services under the House Appropriations Committee's draft legislation released Thursday. The proposed spending bill would also cut all funding to a family planning program, known as Title X.

The newly Republican-controlled House in February was able to pass an amendment to a spending bill defunding Planned Parenthood. The defunding effort was defeated in the U.S. Senate as a standalone measure, following a budget deal brokered between President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner.

The draft spending bill comes from a subcommittee lead by Rep. Denny Rehberg of Montana. The spending bill also appropriates money to the U.S. Department of Labor, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and U.S. Department of Education.

The provision drew immediate criticism from Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards, who claimed in a statement released last week that it would “result in millions of women across the country losing access to basic primary and preventive health care.”

Rehberg defended his budget proposal in a statement published on his website last Thursday.

“By spending tax dollars strategically, we can balance critical funding for programs that actually help people and families with the real need to rein in government over-spending,” he wrote.

Section 524 of the bill reads: “None of the funds made available by this Act may be made available for any purpose to Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc. or any affiliate or clinic of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc. unless such entities certify that Planned Parenthood Federation of America affiliates and clinics will not perform, and will not provide any funds to any other entity that performs, an abortion.”

“The Secretary of Health and Human Services shall seek repayment of any Federal assistance received by Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc., or any affiliate or clinic of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc., if it violates the terms of the certification required by this section,” the legislation continues.

“This bill is the result of the cumulative effort of members of the Subcommittee, and Americans I heard from at 81 listening sessions and in countless meetings in Washington and in Montana. Now, it’s posted online for the only test that matters, and that’s the approval of the American people,” Rehberg said.

Jamie Murray, who runs the Salt and Light cafe in Layton, said he was told there had been a complaint about "homophobic material".

Mr Murray stated: "I did say to the police, 'are you seriously telling me I could be arrested for playing the Bible quietly on a screen?'.

He said the officers replied they would be looking at anything that people could find offensive or insulting.

Police have threatened a Christian cafe owner with arrest –for displaying passages from the Bible on a TV screen.

Mr Murray, 31, was left shocked after he was questioned for nearly an hour by the officers, who arrived unannounced at the premises.

He said he had turned off the Bible DVD after an ‘aggressive inquisition’ during which he thought he was going to be arrested and ‘frog-marched out of the cafe like a criminal’.

But he added: ‘I have now checked on my rights and I am not going to be bullied by the police and the PC lobby out of playing the Bible silently in my cafe. It’s crazy. Christians have to stand up for what they believe in.’

Sam Webster, The Christian Institute’s in-house Solicitor-Advocate, said: “We will be advising Mr Murray of his legal options. He may well have grounds for a legal action against the police for infringing his rights to free speech and religious liberty.

The café owner, Jamie Murray, says he accepts the police’s apology as far as it goes. He forgives them but he believes some important matters remain unaddressed.

Mr Murray says he will not allow the police to brush the incident under the carpet, because he is worried that it could happen to another Christian.

Supported by The Christian Institute, he has taken legal advice and intends to lodge a formal complaint with the police.

Quote John 3:16 & Get $19.99 Oil Change

A Plano, Texas mechanic gives auto service coupons for customers who can recite a Bible verse, but secularists question his legal right to favor Christians, or anyone who will say the verse.

-- From "Reciting John 3:16 gets customers a discount at a Texas service station" by Kate Shellnutt, Houston Chronicle 9/29/11

Charlie Whittington, who owns the station and came up with the deal, is standing firm on his faith, despite complaints from Marshall Wei, who just wants the same perks as those who did recite the popular Christian declaration of faith: “For God so loved that world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Dallas attorney Andy Siegel told the station that as a private business, the Bible-based discount seems to be within the law, though he added, “The study of the Bible has many rewards. I’m not sure that God intended a lube discount to be among its many riches.”

Whittington said he did it as a conversation starter in an effort to talk to people about what he believes.

“It’s one thing about America,” he said. “You can go and do what you want. I’m not making you do anything and I’m tired of people making me do something.”

Pastors Defeating IRS on Freedom to Preach

After several years of pastors taking well-publicized political stances from the pulpit that are said to be unlawful, the IRS appears unwilling to press the cases, apparently fearing it will ultimately lose in the Supreme Court. Given this toothless attitude of the IRS, liberals are now consigned to simply pleading with the pastors to "do the right thing" and not guide their congregations through the political minefields.

-- From "Pastors fight IRS ban on endorsing candidates" by Bob Smietana, The Tennessean 10/1/11

The pastors are challenging an IRS ban on endorsing candidates from the pulpit, which is based on rules that forbid nonprofits from taking part in political campaigns. Preachers say the ban violates their rights to free speech and freedom of religion.

. . . 475 preachers nationwide [have] signed up for Pulpit Freedom Sunday this weekend, according to the Alliance Defense Fund [ADF], a Christian legal group based in Scottsdale, Ariz., that organized the event. Most will endorse candidates and then send their sermons to the IRS.

If the [federal tax regulating/enforcement agency, the Internal Revenue Service] IRS investigates them, the Alliance Defense Fund will sue.

“The issue of whether the IRS can censor what a pastor says in the pulpit has never been tested in court,” said Erik Stanley, senior legal counsel for the Alliance Defense Fund.

The IRS has not punished any pastors involved in Pulpit Freedom events.

. . . if history is any indication, the I.R.S. may continue to steer clear of the taunts.

“It’s frustrating,” said Erik Stanley, senior legal counsel at Alliance Defense. “The law is on the books but they don’t enforce it, leaving churches in limbo.”

Supporters of the law are equally vexed by the tax agency’s perceived inaction. “We have grave concerns over the current inability of the I.R.S. to enforce the federal tax laws applicable to churches,” a group of 13 ministers in Ohio wrote in a letter to the Treasury secretary, Timothy F. Geithner, in July.

Marcus Owens, the lawyer representing the Ohio ministers, warned that the I.R.S.’s failure to pursue churches for politicking violations would encourage more donations to support their efforts, taking further advantage of the new leeway given to advocacy groups under the Supreme Court’s decision last year in the Citizens United case.

The [I.R.S.] says it has continued to do audits of some churches, but those are not disclosed. Mr. Stanley, Mr. Owens and other lawyers say they are virtually certain it has no continuing audits of church political activity, an issue that has been a source of contention in recent elections.

From "Clergy warned about ‘Pulpit Freedom Sunday’" by Lynda Waddington, The Iowa Independent 9/30/11

“This is an appalling attempt by the Religious Right to turn houses of worship into house of partisan politics,” said Rev. Berry W. Lynn, executive director of Americans United for the Separation of Church and State. “Americans attend church for spiritual guidance, not to get a list of candidates to vote for on election day.”

“Church electioneering is illegal, and the people don’t support it,” Lynn added. “It’s time for the Religious Right to stop trying to drag churches into backroom politics.”

During the original Pastor Initiative, according to [Pastor Jim Garlow of Skyline Wesleyan Church], 33 pastors knowingly and purposefully violated federal law by issuing and recording political speech from their pulpits, and afterward provided those recordings to the IRS, which did not prosecute. The following year, a total of 84 pastors did the same — also without penalty. And the year after that 100 pastors did the same without penalty.

“This year,” Garlow said, “we expect close to 500 pastors to intentionally in their sermons defy the Johnson Amendment — they can speak whatever they want — and mail it to the IRS and the Alliance Defense Fund will defend [their right to do so].”

From "Pastors who play politics from the pulpit" by The Christian Science Monitor's Editorial Board 9/30/11

These pastors, most of them evangelical, are part of an effort to bait the Internal Revenue Service into fining one of the churches or taking away its tax-exempt status. If the IRS takes the bait, then that case will be challenged all the way up to the Supreme Court in hopes of overturning the law.

Drawing this fine line between church and state, or between spiritual matters and electioneering, is a protection from government intrusion on organized religion. And it helps political parties from being controlled by a particular religion – something the Muslim world is actively debating, even killing over.

Sorting out the competing issues, however, won’t be easy if the issue gets to the high court. Even harder is the need to persuade all religious groups to stay clear of directly intervening in elections – so that such a law wouldn’t even need to exist.

People of faith do need to be involved in public affairs – to vote, to pray, and even to individually endorse candidates. But if an organized religion wants to be held separate enough from government and not be taxed, it ought not morph into something else, like a political machine, come every election.

From "Evangelical pastors heed a political calling for 2012" by Tom Hamburger and Matea Gold, McClatchy Newspapers 9/18/11

This new activism [of Christians and their pastors] has substantial muscle behind it: a cadre of experienced Christian organizers and some of the conservative movement’s most generous donors, who are setting up technologically sophisticated operations to reach pastors and their congregations in battleground states.

The passion for politics stems from a collision of historic forces, including heightened local organizing around issues of abortion and gay marriage and a view of the country’s debt as a moral crisis that violates biblical instruction. Another major factor: both Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Bachmann, leading contenders for the GOP nomination, are openly appealing to evangelical Christian voters as they blast President Barack Obama’s leadership.

[Today's] current awakening is different [from the past]. It springs from the grass-roots, small and independent churches, and is fueled by emails and YouTube videos. And it is driven less by personality than by adherence to the biblical teaching to be the “salt” and “light” of society — in other words, to have a beneficial influence on the world.
