NFL's Tim Tebow's Sermon Draws 26,000, Media Ignore

Unlike media attention when "bad boys" sports figures and celebrities appear before tens of thousands of cheering fans, when role model quarterback Tim Tebow speaks on Fathers Day to a stadium of worshiping Christians, the media coverage is scant.

Tim Tebow spoke of faith and film at a Father's Day service for Shadow Mountain Community Church at San Diego's Qualcomm Stadium on Sunday.

The New York Jets quarterback revealed how his father, Bob, instilled lifelong values in Tebow using the movie Braveheart and Mel Gibson's depiction of William Wallace as a learning tool.

"It had the biggest impact on my life because every time I would go to practice from then on out, I would think of what my father said to me: 'Do I really love what I'm doing? Am I passionate about it? And am I willing to sacrifice more than anybody else?' " Tebow told a crowd of 26,000 of what he gleaned from Braveheart, which is still his favorite flick.

The Jets star, alongside Shadow Mountain Community Church Pastor David Jeremiah, said “it would be amazing to see how the next generation turns out,” if only famous athletes across the board could understand the force of leading by example.

The 24-year-old also touched on his well-known prayer position, which he said he’s been doing since his senior year in high school as a way to humble himself before and after games. The Tebowing phenomenon took off last season, but the quarterback said there’s a positive in it — even when opposing players do it to mock him.

“Most of the people that do it aren’t really praying,” said Tebow. “But at least it’s being talked about. At least prayer is being talked about, at least getting on a knee is being talked about. And I think that’s a good thing.”

The 2007 Heisman Trophy winner from the University of Florida said the professional sports world does a poor job of providing good examples.

“What’s so frustrating is, you have in today’s society so many famous athletes,” he said. “If we would come together and be great role models, it would be amazing to see how the next generation turns out.”

The quarterback has drawn similar crowds at religious events earlier this year [with little media attention]. An audience of 15,000 attended an outdoor Easter service in Texas. An appearance at a Las Vegas church in March drew 20,000.

The Christian athlete, who was the special guest for a ceremony titled, "Father's Day 2012: Encouraging Men To Live, Love & Lead," in San Diego, Calif., stressed the need for role models for the next generation, and shared how his dad was one for him.

"For me, it was about watching my dad. Because he could say whatever he wanted, but I watched him – how he acted, how he treated my mom, how he treated my four siblings, and that's where I learned the most from my dad is because it wasn't about what he said, it was about what he did," said Tebow, dressed in a pink striped shirt, tan slacks and loafers.

The quarterback told the audience that America's culture should get back to "what this country was based on: one nation under God." He also said he saw no problem in openly talking about his Christian faith, and welcomed the attention his convictions and the "Tebowing" prayer pose draw. "It's being talked about," he said. "That's exciting… It's OK to be outspoken about your faith."

Tebow and Pastor David Jeremiah of the host church, Shadow Mountain Community Church, spoke for more than 50 minutes at the event that was free and open to public. Many in the audience were wearing John 3:16 stickers on their faces.

Atheists Want Marine Memorial Demolished at Pendleton

The atheist group Military Religious Freedom Foundation has caused a Marine Corps investigation into a pair of Christian crosses placed by Marines in an empty, remote spot 3,000 feet up at Camp Pendleton where no one can see them.

For background, read Supreme Court Says No Crosses; Arlington Neither? and also read Federal Appeals Court Rules Cross Unconstitutional

-- From "Memorial crosses at California Marine Corps base ignite debate" by Marty Graham, Reuters 4/13/12

Seven Marines carried the original cross to the top of the mountain, which can only be seen from the base roads, in 2003 to honor fallen Marines from the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment.

Four of those seven Marines have since died in action, including Lance Corporal Robert Zurheide, who was killed in Iraq's Al Anbar province the following year.

The original cross was destroyed during wildfires in 2007 and was replaced in 2008 by a group [of Marines and family members].

Last year a group of Marines hauled a fire-resistant cross up to the mountaintop and placed it up next to the cross installed in 2008. Within days, the Military Religious Freedom Foundation asked that both crosses be removed and replaced with a non-religious memorial.

The raising of the cross was not an official or sanctioned Marine Corps activity but rather a private undertaking by Marines and a retired Navy chaplain who served with the four Marines.

Lance Cpl. Aaron Austin and Lance Cpl. Robert Zurheide were killed during the battle for Fallouja in 2004. Maj. Ray Mendoza was killed in Al Qaim in 2005 and Maj. Douglas Zembiec in Baghdad in 2007. The widows of Zurheide and Mendoza helped in hauling the cross up the hill.

Now two symbols are at the end of a brutal 3,000-foot hike that begins at an area of the base called Camp Horno and ends at the top of a ridge line that overlooks vast openness in one direction and the glistening Pacific Ocean in the other.

Here the crosses are blanketed in symbols of valor, sorrow and festivity. You'll see Purple Heart medals, pictures, books, messages, mementos from deployments around the globe and even a bottle or can of the fallen's favorite liquor...all left in remembrance.

But the area has become controversial and more known after a newspaper report last fall detailed the location and posted a picture. In response, several groups filed complaints with Marines arguing the site violated the Constitutional mandate of separation of church and state, including the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers or MAAF. They want the crosses moved to a church on private land and flags or some other symbol used instead to mark the site.

For 10 years, the crosses have stood on the hill without complaint, but the MAAF says if they don't come down soon, it will file a lawsuit and possibly hold protests outside the Marine base gates. [Critics say] the original Marines, while good intentioned, overstepped their bounds by building a shrine without approval or notice from the Corps.

Praise Lesbian Homecoming King, or You're a Bigot

When lesbian Rebeca Arellano was crowned homecoming king at Patrick Henry High School in San Diego, she joined the queen Haileigh Adams, her lesbian counterpart. The school superintendent has since characterized every expressed disagreement with this glorification of sexual deviancy, regardless how civil, as hate-filled.
"For all the girls who think tradition should be continued, go back to the kitchen, stop having sex before you're married, get out of school and job system, don't have an opinion, don't own any property, give up the right to marry who you love, don't vote, and allow your husband to do whatever he pleases to you. Think about the meaning of tradition when you use it in your argument against us."

The couple said they were not planning to run and were shocked by the attention they've received.

Arellano said one of her teachers told her, "Today school is a bit better because of you girls."

"Anonymous Patrick Henry students are saying they're embarrassed and that it's wrong for a girl to take the spot of king. But there's no other way for us to run as a couple. It's not really fair for us not to have the right to run as a couple."

Adams and Arellano both came out their freshman year of high school, and they began dating in February of their sophomore year. They say their parents were supportive both when they came out and when they started dating.

Target Stores Sues Homosexualists Harassing Customers

The retailer has been targeted by Canvass for a Cause, a San Diego pro-same-sex "marriage" organization, for not boarding the Gay Agenda bandwagon firmly enough; the activists regularly canvass outside Target stores.

UPDATE 4/8/11: Judge rules for homosexualists with minimal restrictions

-- From "Trial in Target lawsuit against same-sex marriage group to start in San Diego County" posted at Los Angeles Times 3/25/11

At issue is whether Target’s broad-based, no-solicitation policy violates the free-speech rights of activists from Canvass for a Cause, a San Diego group formed in the wake of the passage of Proposition 8, which bans same-sex marriage in California.

According to documents filed in San Diego County Superior Court, lawyers for Minnesota-based Target Corp. will argue that its stores are private property and not quasi-public forums, such as shopping malls, where the courts have sided with free-speech advocates.

Target faced an angry backlash from customers, shareholders and gay and lesbian groups last year for donating $150,000 to a business group that was backing a Minnesota gubernatorial candidate opposed to gay rights.

The company apologized and instituted tighter controls on political contributions.

From "Target wants gay-marriage activists barred from property" by Julie Watson, Associated Press 3/25/11

The suit alleges the activists, trying to collect signatures and donations, are driving away customers by cornering them and talking about gay marriage.

Rights advocates say the legal battle between Target and Canvass for a Cause could further strain the retailer's relations with the gay and lesbian community. The once-cozy relationship has deteriorated since Target made a $150,000 donation to this summer to MN Forward, which supported Republican Tom Emmer in the governor's race. Emmer, who lost the race to Democrat Mark Dayton, was opposed to gay marriage.

Minneapolis-based Target insisted it remained committed to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and its lawsuit has nothing to do with the political agenda of the organization.

Target has had a long-standing policy against solicitations outside its stores. For years, the one exception to that rule was the Salvation Army, which Target allowed to collect donations -- with their identifiable bell ringers -- during the holidays. But even the Salvation Army was booted in 2004. The retailer said at the time that it had decided to apply its no-solicitations policy consistently and nationally.

From "Target Sues Gay Marriage Petitioners for Disruption" by Stephanie Samuel, Christian Post Reporter 3/25/11

Superior Court Judge Jeffrey B. Barton heard initial arguments Friday morning between Target Corp. and Canvass for a Cause. The judge plans to issue a ruling next week.

The group, founded by “pissed off activists” according to the website, says it canvasses at shopping malls, college campus and stores like Target to collect signatures and donations in support of gay marriage.

According to court documents, the activists typically stand within 10 feet of the store entrance and approach customers by asking them if they support gay marriage. If the individual says yes, the volunteers ask him or her to sign a petition and make a credit card donation. If the individual responds negatively to the initial question, court documents state that volunteers tend to become “angry and aggressive” and “challenge our customers on their morals.”

Target Corp. Executive Team Lead Daniel Brown testifies in the documents, “I have seen them tell our customers not to vote if they are unhappy with the customers' views.”

Also, in a March 1 complaint, a man complained after a CFAC volunteer allegedly verbally berated his wife while she was with their four-month-old child. He alleged that the volunteer followed the wife to her car and refused to move until she gave a credit card donation.

From "Target sues solicitors, triggers free speech debate" by Matthew T. Hall, San Diego Union Tribune 3/26/11

Bernard Schroeder, an expert in marketing at San Diego State University, said Target should have seen the latest flap coming and instead of suing Canvass for a Cause to keep it from its doorsteps, Target should have taken to the court of public opinion.

A full-page newspaper ad calling attention to the company’s support of the gay and lesbian community, its disdain for solicitors who can be a harassment to shoppers and its financial contributions to a wide range of community activities would have fueled a more favorable media storm, he said.

In its statement Friday, Target stressed its support for the gay community, outlined a range of domestic partner benefits it offers and added that it has a nearly 1,000-member LGBT Business Council that acts as a resource for LGBT employees and advises the company “about LGBT guests.”

Fed. Appeals Court Rules Cross Unconstitutional

The typically liberal 9th Circuit in San Francisco says the war memorial cross at Mt. Soledad, San Diego is an endorsement of Christianity by government; the case is headed to an eventual conclusion at the Supreme Court.

UPDATE 6/25/12: Supreme Court declines involvement in case, for now -- maybe later.

UPDATE 3/15/12: Obama Justice Department files legal briefs asking the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to allow the cross to stay

UPDATE 1/11/11: VFW sues Obama administration over Mojave cross land

-- From "Judges rule cross at Calif. park unconstitutional" by The Associated Press 1/4/11

A three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issued the unanimous decision in the dispute over the 29-foot cross, which was dedicated in 1954 in honor of Korean War veterans.

"In no way is this decision meant to undermine the importance of honoring our veterans," the three judges said in their ruling. "Indeed, there are countless ways that we can and should honor them, but without the imprimatur of state-endorsed religion."

Federal courts are reviewing several cases of crosses on public lands being challenged as unconstitutional, including a cross erected on a remote Mojave Desert outcropping to honor American war dead. Tuesday's ruling could influence future cases involving the separation of church and state.

U.S. Justice Department [of the Obama Administration] spokesman Wyn Hornbuckle said the federal government, which is defending the San Diego cross, is studying the ruling and had no comment.

From "Appeals court rules Soledad cross unconstitutional" by Greg Moran, San Diego Union-Tribune 1/4/11

The battle is likely far from over. The appeals court did not order the 43-foot monument removed but returned the case to federal court in San Diego to determine if the cross will have to be moved or if there is a way that it can be modified to pass constitutional scrutiny as part of the war memorial.

Reaction to the ruling was swift and pointed. The American Civil Liberties Union of San Diego & Imperial Counties, which represented opponents seeking to get the cross moved, said the decision validated core legal ideas.

There are a couple of ways the case could move forward. The federal government, which now owns the land and was the defendant in the case, could ask a larger panel of the appeals court to review Tuesday’s decision. The larger panel could conclude the cross is OK where it is.

A second possibility, and one that people on both sides of the issue have long expected, would be for the case to end up before the U.S. Supreme Court, to determine once and for all the fate of the cross.

From "Appeals court says Calif. cross on public land must go" by Robert Marus, Associated Baptist Press 1/5/11

“[C]onsidering the entire context of the memorial, the memorial today remains a predominantly religious symbol,” wrote Circuit Judge Margaret McKeown in the court’s opinion. “The history and absolute dominance of the cross are not mitigated by the belated efforts to add less significant secular elements to the memorial.”

“The fact that the memorial also commemorates the war dead and serves as a site for secular ceremonies honoring veterans cannot overcome the effect of its decades-long religious history....," McKeown wrote. "The memorial’s relatively short history of secular usage does not predominate over its religious functions so as to eliminate the message of endorsement that the cross conveys.”

The court also noted the La Jolla community’s history of anti-Semitism between the 1920s and 1970s.

“Overall, a reasonable observer viewing the memorial would be confronted with an initial dedication for religious purposes, its long history of religious use, widespread public recognition of the cross as a Christian symbol, and the history of religious discrimination in La Jolla,” McKeown wrote. “These factors cast a long shadow of sectarianism over the memorial that has not been overcome by the fact that it is also dedicated to fallen soldiers, or by its comparatively short history of secular events.... The use of such a distinctively Christian symbol to honor all veterans sends a strong message of endorsement and exclusion. It suggests that the government is so connected to a particular religion that it treats that religion’s symbolism as its own, as universal. To many non-Christian veterans, this claim of universality is alienating.”

From "Calif. War Memorial Cross Unconstitutional, Court Rules" by Stephanie Samuel, Christian Post Reporter 1/5/11

Alliance Defense Fund Senior Counsel Joe Infranco labeled the ruling a tragedy.

“It’s tragic that the court chose a twisted and tired interpretation of the First Amendment over the common-sense idea that the families of fallen American troops should be allowed to honor these heroes as they choose,” he expressed in a statement following yesterday’s ruling.

Prior to this ruling, U.S. District Judge Larry Alan Burns ruled in 2008 that the cross does not violate the separation of Church and State.

"The court finds the memorial at Mt. Soledad, including its Latin cross, communicates the primarily non-religious messages of military service, death, and sacrifice," Burns wrote in his decision. "As such, despite its location on public land, the memorial is constitutional."

Calif. Judge Rules God to Stay in School

A federal judge in California has handed down a scathing ruling against a school that required one of its teachers to remove signs celebrating the role of God in American history from his classroom walls.

UPDATE 1/26/12: Teacher appeals to Supreme Court

UPDATE 3/9/10: School Board appeals ruling to 9th Circuit (which ruled against teacher)

For background, read School Bans “In God We Trust,” Judge Disagrees

-- From "Judge sides with teacher on God banners display" By Greg Moran, San Diego Union-Tribune Staff Writer 3/2/10

Judge Roger Benitez said teacher Bradley Johnson is entitled to a declaration that his First Amendment rights were violated by the Poway Unified School District.

He also said in a ruling Friday that Johnson should get damages of $10 from each of nine officials he named in a lawsuit filed in 2007.

Benitez also ordered the district to allow Johnson to rehang the banners in his classroom.

The district said it had to come down on Johnson because the banners advocated a Judeo-Christian point of view that was not in sync with the nonreligious mission of public schools.

From "Teacher wins major victory for God in school" By Drew Zahn © 2010 WorldNetDaily 3/1/10

As WND reported, math teacher Bradley Johnson had banners hanging in his classroom at Westview High School in San Diego, Calif., for more than 17 years with phrases like "In God We Trust" and "All Men Are Created Equal, They Are Endowed by Their Creator," only to have the principal order them torn down during the 2007 school year.

But Johnson filed a lawsuit alleging the order a violation of his constitutional rights, and the teacher has now been rewarded with a court victory and a powerfully-worded ruling.

"May a school district censor a high school teacher's expression because it refers to Judeo-Christian views, while allowing other teachers to express views on a number of controversial subjects, including religion and anti-religion?" posited U.S. District Court Judge Roger T. Benitez in his judgment. "On undisputed evidence, this court holds that it may not."

He continued, "That God places prominently in our nation's history does not create an Establishment Clause violation requiring curettage and disinfectant for Johnson's public high school classroom walls. It is a matter of historical fact that our institutions and government actors have in past and present times given place to a supreme God."

The judge further reprimanded the school, stating that while teachers at the district "encourage students to celebrate diversity and value thinking for one's self, [they] apparently fear their students are incapable of dealing with diverse viewpoints that include God's place in American history and culture."

The older of Johnson's two signs, which had hung on his wall without complaint for 25 years, measured 7 feet by 2 feet and contained the words "In God We Trust," "One Nation Under God," "God Bless America" and "God Shed His Grace On Thee." The second banner, posted eight years after the first, quoted the Declaration of Independence by including the phrase, "All Men Are Created Equal, They Are Endowed by Their Creator."

Though the district permits other teachers to hang Buddhist, Islamic and Tibetan prayer messages on their classroom walls, Johnson was nonetheless told to take his banners down.

The charge of a double standard was not lost on Judge Benitez.

"Fostering diversity," Benitez ruled, "does not mean bleaching out historical religious expression or mainstream morality. By squelching only Johnson's patriotic and religious classroom banners, while permitting other diverse religious and anti-religious classroom displays, the school district does a disservice to the students of Westview High School, and the federal and state constitutions do not permit this one-sided censorship."

And in response to the school district's claim that Johnson's patriotic banners might make a Muslim student, for example, uncomfortable, Judge Benitez stated, "[A]n imaginary Islamic student is not entitled to a heckler's veto on a teacher's passive, popular or unpopular expression about God's place in the history of the United States."

Abortionist May Lose 'License to Kill' After Mother's Death

A judge Thursday ordered a Southern California obstetrician-gynecologist to immediately stop performing abortions and delivering babies until a formal disciplinary hearing can be held about the death of one of his patients during an abortion.

UPDATE 2/19/10: Judge sustains abortionist's license, allowing killings to resume

Hello? Death occurs in EVERY abortion!

-- From "Southern California doctor ordered to stop performing abortions" by Tony Perry, Los Angeles Time 1/8/10

Administrative Law Judge James Ahler stopped short of granting a request by attorneys for the Medical Board of California to immediately suspend the license of Dr. Andrew Rutland, opting to temporarily limit his practice instead.

Deputy Atty. Gen. Douglas Lee, at a hearing in San Diego, had argued that Rutland "committed repeated negligent acts in his care and treatment" of a 30-year-old woman who came to a clinic in San Gabriel in August seeking an abortion.

The patient, Ying Chen, had a toxic reaction to a drug administered by Rutland, Lee said, and the doctor did not have the proper equipment or personnel in case of an emergency. In a written decision, Ahler said that Rutland's willingness to perform a second-trimester abortion in a facility inadequately equipped for emergencies "casts doubt on his professional judgment."

The judge said Rutland "presents a risk of danger and there is a likelihood of injury to the public" if he is allowed to continue deliveries or surgeries.

. . . At the time of the death, Rutland was on five years' administrative probation stemming from another case in which he surrendered his license amid an investigation into the death of two infants shortly after delivery, according to state records. His license was later reinstated.

Unlicensed Abortionist Jailed; Accomplices also Convicted

Bertha Bugarin's Chula Vista, Calif. abortion clinic has closed as she serves a 7-year prison sentence. New clinic opens in town with different abortionist, who is on probation.

. . . Bertha Bugarin, was sentenced to seven years in state prison for posing as a doctor and performing illegal abortions.

A court recently sentenced her accomplices, Luz Catalina-Gomez and Paloma Rodriguez, to three years probation.

A new clinic has recently opened up under the name Woman's Choice Family Planning Clinic, and it is being run by Dr. Andrew Rutland. Sources told 10News that Rutland has had problems in the past and is on probation.

Rutland was accused by the State Medical Board of negligently treating ten patients, including two infants who died. He surrendered his license, but applied for reinstatement five years later.

"The doctor [Rutland] who is presently here has connections with one of the doctors who used to work for Bugarin who lost his license because of malpractice suits," said pro-life advocate Luis Mendoza.

With the abortion practitioners her centers hired having their own legal problems, Bertha Pinedo Bugarin, 48, took it upon herself to do abortions. As LifeNews.com reported in April, Bugarin was sentenced on a second set of charges that she did abortions without a medical license.

Bugarin was accused of putting more than a dozen patients at risk by doing abortions on them or giving them the dangerous RU 486 abortion drug without having medical training.

Of Bugarin, District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis said, "This criminal preyed on women in the Hispanic community and has now been held accountable. By passing herself off as a doctor, she put these women's lives in serious danger."

For years, Operation Rescue exposed wrongdoing at the abortion chain. As a result, numerous abortion practitioners hired by Bugarin suffered license revocation and other severe discipline.

Her chain of six abortion clinics, known as Clinica Medica Para La Mujer De Hoy, has now closed.

Homosexualists Demonstrate by Hours-long Kissing in Public

Saturday, homosexualists held a "kiss-in" in several cities across America in order to gain attention -- mostly, no one noticed (hardly any reporting on the event, other than gay sources)

-- From "Gay-rights supporters hold 'kiss-in' on mall" by Annette Espinoza, The Denver Post 8/16/09

About a dozen people on Denver's 16th Street Mall participated in a nationwide "kiss-in" Saturday to underscore their support for gay rights.

The event drew a tepid response from onlookers.

The genesis of the "kiss-in" was a July 9 Salt Lake City incident in which two gay men were spotted kissing, then were arrested and cited for trespassing in a downtown plaza owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. There later were similar incidents in El Paso and San Antonio.

In Washington, D.C., 22 people, many of them strangers to one another, gathered under the scorching sun on Washington's National Mall to participate in the national smooch.

'Big Brother' Requires Permit for Home Bible Study

A San Diego, CA couple say authorities appeared at their front door and interrogated them concerning their group Bible study habits and warned they will be fined if they continue such Christian activity without formal registration.

The couple, whose names are being withheld until a demand letter can be filed on their behalf, told their attorney a county government employee knocked on their door on Good Friday, asking a litany of questions about their Tuesday night Bible studies, which are attended by approximately 15 people.

"Do you have a regular weekly meeting in your home? Do you sing? Do you say 'amen'?" the official reportedly asked. "Do you say, 'Praise the Lord'?"

The pastor's wife answered yes.

She says she was then told, however, that she must stop holding "religious assemblies" until she and her husband obtain a Major Use Permit from the county, a permit that often involves traffic and environmental studies, compliance with parking and sidewalk regulations and costs that top tens of thousands of dollars.

And if they fail to pay for the MUP, the county official reportedly warned, the couple will be charged escalating fines beginning at $100, then $200, $500, $1000, "and then it will get ugly."

-- From "Pageant PR rep accuses Miss California of lying" by Lisa Leff, Associated Press 4/27/09

A spokesman for the Miss California pageant on Monday denied that contest officials told the reigning beauty queen to publicly apologize for her statement opposing same-sex marriage during the Miss USA pageant.

Carrie Prejean, 21, claimed during Sunday services at her San Diego church that producers of the state pageant told her to apologize to the gay community and to avoid mentioning religion when she appeared last week on the "Today" show and other national programs.

But San Diego public relations representative Roger Neal, who said he was one of the people advising her, called those claims lies. Contest officials urged Prejean only to reiterate that she didn't mean to offend anyone and to use the national spotlight "to heal some wounds," he said.

Keith Lewis, a Los Angeles talent agent and gay activist who runs the Miss California pageant, also issued a statement expressing dismay with Prejean and concern about her ability to carry out her duties during the remainder of her rein.

"Given the fact that Carrie Prejean's first act upon returning to California was to headline five services at a church that promotes homosexuality as both unnatural and abnormal, we stand by our concern for her individual image and look forward to a time in the near future when she can put down her personal agenda" and resume her responsibilities as Miss California, Jenkins wrote.

Miss California Carrie Prejean, who finished runner-up in the Miss USA pageant after affirming on air that "marriage should be between a man and a woman," claims that her state sponsors urged her afterwards to apologize for the statement and keep quiet about her Christian faith.

Prejean appeared yesterday at The Rock Church in San Diego, the Associated Press reports, and told the congregation what she remembers being told following the pageant.

"'You need to apologize to the gay community. You need to not talk about your faith," Prejean recalled being instructed. "This has everything to do with you representing California and saving the brand.'"

Prejean, however, defended her statement by alluding to California's Proposition 8 ballot initiative, in which the state's voters added language to the California Constitution defining marriage as only between one man and one woman.

"I was representing California," Prejean declared yesterday. "I was representing the majority of people in California."

Keith Lewis, executive director of Miss California USA/Teen USA, also wrote a letter condemning Prejean that echoed what she says she was told following the pageant.

"As co-executive director of Miss CA USA and one of the leaders of the Miss CA family, I am personally saddened and hurt that Miss CA USA 2009 believes marriage rights belong only to a man and a woman," he wrote. "Although I believe all religions should be able to ordain what unions they see fit, I do not believe our government should be able to discriminate against anyone. Religious beliefs have no place in politics in the Miss CA family."

Prejean nonetheless refused to apologize for the answer she gave.

"I don't take back what I said," Prejean told the church, according to a San Diego Union-Tribune report. "No way I wasn't going to stand up for what I believe in."

At church yesterday, she added, "I learned that God has a bigger crown than any man can give you."

San Diego Guilty of Sexual Harassment of Non-Gay Firemen

City ordered to pay $34,300 to Firemen forced to attend the "gay pride parade" by Fire Chief Tracy Jarman

-- From "Jury awards $34,300 to firefighters over parade" by Tony Manolatos and Angelica Martinez, Union-Tribune Staff Writers 2/18/09

A jury of eight women and four men deliberated for 2½ days and found that the firefighters, who were ordered to ride a fire engine in the 2007 gay pride parade, were sexually harassed by some participants and spectators.

Jurors awarded a total of $34,300 to John Ghiotto, Jason Hewitt, Alex Kane and Chad Allison.
Allison said this was never about money.

The parade experience left the firefighters with headaches, anxiety, irritable bowel syndrome and other stress-related symptoms, they said. They also testified that they were subjected to catcalls and saw barely clothed men simulate sex acts along the route on University Avenue in Hillcrest, which is home to a large gay population.

Calif. Government Favors Booze over Jesus

A federal judge scolded San Diego County for closing a Christian church's worship center and ordered officials to process permits needed by the congregation to remedy violations.

-- From "Judge scolds San Diego County for closing church" by Alyssa Farah © 2008 WorldNetDaily 11/28/08

The ruling found that Guatay Christian Fellowship, on Old Highway 80 in San Diego County, probably will win its lawsuit against the county, which had shut down the building and banned the congregation from meeting there over a zoning issue.

County officials said the building could be used for a bar, but not worship, and ordered the church, which had rented the building for nearly 25 years, to close under the threat of criminal penalties and fines of up to $2,500 per day.

The county also threatened to contact the electrical company and instruct it to cut power to the structure.

However, U.S. District Judge Jeffrey T. Miller, in his ruling, said, "The county's actions in this case were draconian," according to the officials with Pacific Justice Institute, which worked on the case.

CA Gay Pride: Firefighters Sexually Harassed, Lesbian Fire Chief Admits

Fire Chief Tracy Jarman and the assistant chief who ordered four San Diego firefighters to attend last year's gay pride parade testified . . . that they understand how [the firefighters] could find the event offensive.

-- From "Fire chief recounts gay pride parade" by Tony Manolatos, San Diego Union-Tribune Staff Writer 9/19/08

The firefighters – John Ghiotto, Jason Hewitt, Alex Kane and Chad Allison – are suing the city for unspecified damages. They said they were sexually harassed at the parade and mistreated at work after filing complaints. The trial began Monday before Judge Michael Anello and is expected to last two more weeks.

The four men say they suffered emotional distress because of what they saw and heard: cat calls, simulated sex acts among men wearing nothing but briefs, and lewd comments and gestures.

Jarman and Assistant Chief Jeff Carle marched in last year's parade ahead of Engine 5, which carried the four firefighters. Neither Jarman nor Carle said they felt sexually harassed, but both testified that they can see why the parade would offend some people.

It's the biggest parade in the city, drawing more than 100,000 spectators to Hillcrest, home to a large gay population.

School Bans “In God We Trust,” Judge Disagrees

A California school district forced the removal of a teacher's posters in his classroom that presented a “Judeo-Christian” point of view, but the Judge disagrees saying the references to God are NOT about a divine entity.

-- From "Judge doesn't toss lawsuit by teacher" by Onell R. Soto, San Diego Union-Tribune Staff Writer 9/10/08

A federal judge has ruled that [Westview High School] officials shouldn't have made a Rancho Peñasquitos [San Diego, CA] math teacher take down classroom banners proclaiming “In God We Trust,” “God Bless America” and other sayings.

This lawsuit was filed by [teacher Brad] Johnson, who asked the judge to tell the school district the banners were OK.

In his 23-page decision issued Friday, U.S. District Judge Roger Benitez denied a motion by the Poway Unified School District to dismiss the case, but he didn't order it to do anything about Johnson or the banners.

Benitez noted that, according to Johnson and his lawyers, the school district allows other teachers to choose what they display on their walls, including Tibetan prayer flags and posters with Buddhist and Islamic messages.

“By squelching only Johnson's patriotic expression, the school district does a disservice to the students of Westview High School, and the federal and state constitutions do not permit such one-sided censorship,” he wrote.

In the ruling, Benitez said the banners aren't religious and “do not advocate” for the divine.

School board members will have to decide whether to continue to fight the case in front of Benitez, appeal the decision or settle the lawsuit, said their lawyer, Jack Sleeth.

Sleeth said the issue isn't as simple as Benitez made it sound.

CA Abortionist Faces 9 Years in Prison

UPDATE (12/8/08): Abortion Business Owner Pleads Guilty to Unlicensed Abortion, All Facilities Closed

-- From "Abortion clinic operator is charged in felonies by San Diego County D.A." by Tony Perry, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer 6/21/08

SAN DIEGO -- A 48-year-old woman who ran an abortion clinic in Chula Vista was charged Friday with 10 felony counts of practicing medicine without a license and grand theft.

Bertha Pinedo Bugarin, who faces similar charges in Los Angeles, is accused of telling women that she was a doctor, performing abortions on them and prescribing drugs. One woman had to be rushed to a hospital with life-threatening complications, prosecutors said.

[San Diego County Dist. Atty. Bonnie] Dumanis said nine former patients from Bugarin's Clinica Medica de la Mujer have identified Bugarin, including one woman who gave birth prematurely to a baby that lived for only three hours. Another patient paid $500 for an abortion but had to return for a second procedure when the first was not successful, prosecutors said.

"This defendant preyed on women in the Hispanic community" by passing herself off as a doctor, the prosecutor says. Bertha Bugarin, 48, at one point ran six clinics in Southern California. If convicted on all counts, she faces more than nine years in prison, prosecutors said.

Calif. County Employees Refuse to Perform Civil Same-sex 'Marriages'

-- From "Employees told they could be reassigned" by Craig Gustafson, San Diego Union-Tribune Staff Writer 6/19/08

At least 14 employees in the San Diego County Clerk's Office raised religious objections to performing gay wedding ceremonies but were told by their boss they couldn't pick and choose between marriage applicants.

“It would unfairly burden other employees and would directly compromise the services we provide to the public, particularly given that so many employees have requested the same arrangement,” Smith's office told 14 employees by e-mail.

In the e-mails, employees were told they would have to perform the ceremonies without discrimination or seek a reassignment within the department or the county.

San Diego was not the only county where religious objections from county clerk employees came up.

In Sutter County, north of Sacramento, three of the four employees who usually perform wedding ceremonies said that they could not do so for same-sex couples, said Cindy McMillan, assistant Sutter County Clerk-Recorder. They were not penalized for their beliefs, and other employees volunteered to perform the nuptials.

By contrast, the issue did not come up in Alameda County in the San Francisco Bay Area or in Orange County. No county employees who perform civil wedding ceremonies requested to opt out for religious or other reasons, officials said.

San Diego Christians Help Prevent City Council from Signing Gay-Marriage Brief

Approximately 40 Christians appeared at the San Diego City Council on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 to oppose the brief.

From "City Council declines to sign on to gay-marriage court brief" posted 9/6/07 at San Diego Metro News

The San Diego City Council declined Tuesday to sign onto an amicus brief with other cities asking the California Supreme Court to overturn a prohibition on same-sex marriages.

The so-called “friend-of-the-court” brief has been endorsed by the cities of Los Angeles, San Jose, Long Beach and Oakland.

An effort by San Diego Councilwoman Toni Atkins to join the request failed, with her colleagues split 4-4.

Voting against Atkins' motion were council members Donna Frye, Tony Young, Brian Maienschein and Kevin Faulconer.

Frye said she was concerned about a lack of public notice.

“I think we at least need to allow both sides to weigh in on this issue,” she said. “The public has a right to participate, and I do not believe that has occurred.”

Young, Maienschein and Faulconer did not explain the reasons for their dissenting votes.

Atkins, who is gay, told her colleagues that gay couples should have civil rights equal to their heterosexual counterparts.

Important Note: The Constitution does not grant rights to COUPLES. It protects the rights of INDIVIDUALS. Giving special rights to couples and groups always diminishes freedom for individuals...

According to ex-homosexual activist James Hartline, approximately 40 Christians appeared at the San Diego City Council on Tuesday, September 4, 2007 to oppose the brief. The issuance of a legal brief in support of a gay marriage case currently being heard by the California Supreme Court would have been catastrophic for Christian values in California's second largest city.

Hartline is himself running for a city council seat being vacated by Councilwoman Toni Atkins.

The Mike Farmer Story, A Real Hometown Hero

In a time when the San Diego Padres have chosen to promote homosexuality over Christianity, the kids of San Diego are desperately counting on real men like Mike Farmer to step up to the plate each and everyday to be the real heroes in America.

From " Hometown Heroes of San Diego Series: The Mike Farmer Story, A Real Hometown Hero" by James Hartline, posted 8/7/07 at California-Christian-News

...Mike Farmer never set out to cause trouble for anyone when he became a Christian. However, once the Padres decided to expose the kids of San Diego to homosexuality at Petco Park, Farmer decided that the team needed some trouble from their number one fan. Farmer made his feelings known regarding the Padres and their promotion of homosexuality at a July 10, 2007 San Diego City Council Meeting. Mike demonstrated his passion for protecting the kids of San Diego in a powerful three-minute clarion call that was reminiscent of the founding fathers during the early days of the Revolutionary War.

Farmer told the members of the San Diego City Council that it was the first time he had ever spoken at city hall. "Mike's speech was one of the best that I've ever heard. What is so incredible is that it was the first time he'd ever spoken at the city council," said Hartline, a veteran of many city council meetings. You can watch the entirety of Mike Farmer's speech by logging onto:

"We as parents have a right to determine if and when we choose to discuss issues of sexuality with our kids, not the gay pride organization," declared Farmer. Mike's speech culminated with a powerful challenge to the city councilmembers who claim to be Christians, particularly during elections when the Christian vote is needed to win. Farmer stated, "There's Christians on this council. I'm looking at a couple. Every year you vote for this gay pride celebration. It is time for you to reconsider your vote on this matter!"

...When he became a Christian approximately thirteen years ago, Mike Farmer didn't know much about the Bible or Christian activism. He never even imagined that in 2007 he would find himself in the middle of a battle to save the kids of his city. Yet, that is where Mike's love for his son and his commitment to Jesus Christ have taken him.

At the same time that Mike married his loving wife Suzie they were studying Christianity under the Bible teaching of an up-and-coming young pastor by the name of Leo Giovinetti.

...Over the years, Giovinetti has encouraged his thriving congregation to stay steadfast in their commitment to some very basic Christian principles. "Read your bible every day and take what you learn and enter the story," Pastor Leo reminds the 1,500 weekly attendees of Mission Valley Christian Fellowship.

Enter the story means active involvement in the culture. And that is exactly what Mike Farmer has done in his very public stand on behalf of the young kids and their families in San Diego County. Hopefully thousands of other dads in San Diego will follow the example of Mike Farmer and go to battle for the youth of their city. In a time when the San Diego Padres have chosen to promote homosexuality over Christianity, the kids of San Diego are desperately counting on real men like Mike Farmer to step up to the plate each and everyday to be the real heroes in America.
