In 2015, Obama didn’t include [“gender identity” in the proclamation] but gave a shout-out to mothers who are “married or single, LGBT or straight, biological, adoptive, or foster.”

And in 2014, the Mother’s Day announcement was even more straightforward, with no mention of sexual preference or gender identity at all.

Obama has a personal history with transgender maternal figures. According to several reports, when he was a young boy in Indonesia, Obama had a nanny who was a gay transgender man known as “Evie.”

“He was so young, and I never let him see me wearing women’s clothes,” “Evie” told the Daily Mail in 2012. “But he did see me trying on his mother’s lipstick, sometimes. That used to really crack him up.”

“Evie” became a prostitute after Obama left and now lives in a slum, according to the report.

The President's inclusion of transgenders as a new class of mothers could add fuel to the raging controversies concerning transgender issues.

The latest of such controversies was the decision taken by the Obama administration to expand alternative sexual lifestyles to the college campus. This came about after the Department of Education launched a website which critics say is dedicated to "shaming" Christian colleges that follow biblical principles rather than a leftist social agenda.

The "shame list" posted online by the Department of Education features colleges that have sought exemptions to Title IX requirements that provide special treatment to transgenders.

The three-year plan is the CIA’s chance to “weave diversity and inclusion deep into the fabric of our Agency,” which reflects the Obama administration’s priorities.

From 2016 to 2019, the goal is to increase the presence of marginalized demographics in the agency, though it’s not clear what unique skills transgender individuals bring to the table, in comparison to ethnic groups, who usually have valuable linguistic skills in high demand.

The CIA will implement training efforts to emphasize the importance of diversity and inclusion in leadership and development programs and will establish a pipeline to funnel diversity hires to top positions. Any barriers to this effort must be eliminated.

A key barrier will likely be the reaction of employees to the new hires, which is precisely why the CIA is set to unfold “unconscious bias” training, in order to “deepen diversity and inclusion awareness and expertise among all officers through corporate-wide unconscious bias training, speaker series, and other learning opportunities.”

Among the intelligence agency’s key actions to meet this goal is to teach recruitment officers to “strengthen cultural competencies and combat unconscious bias.”

The CIA will measure its progress of recruiting minorities, LGBT individuals, veterans, and women by using an “inclusion index.” The agency will also track “Diversity and gender break-down of applicant flow data and recruiting trends.”

CIA Director John Brennan said diversity and inclusion are “at the heart” of what the intelligence service is “charged to do.”

The CIA will “establish diversity and inclusion objectives for programs focused on professional development, including mentoring, coaching, shadowing, and other experiences that aim for officers to develop as CIA Intelligence Professionals.”

I would be behind the CIA's diversity efforts if I could be convinced that they will enhance the agency's ability to keep us safe.  But a program dedicated to recruiting transgendered people is not designed to make the agency better – only more "diverse."

Can you find anything in [that CIA Plan] that would lead you to believe that the CIA will improve its human intelligence gathering – HUMINT – if it seeks out employees based not exclusively on their abilities or intelligence, but rather on someone's nebulous notions of what constitutes "diversity"?  I can't.  And I suspect that the social justice warriors at the agency don't care about such mundane notions as hiring the best and brightest to protect America.

To them, it's more important to protect their politically correct ideas that make diversity an end in and of itself.  And if the agency's ability to protect us is eroded?  A small price to pay for diversity.

The day she nervously told her boss that they needed to talk in the summer of 2012, the young intelligence analyst [born male] was mindful of the ordeal of the transgender woman at the Central Intelligence Agency who came before her. The story had become C.I.A. lore. In the late 1980s, a standout senior analyst who became the butt of jokes when she came out resigned after enduring months of cruel glances and crude remarks.

Jenny, the young officer, who is a Middle East expert, hadn’t heard yet about Diane Schroer, the former Army officer who set an important legal precedent for transgender federal employees by suing the Library of Congress in 2005. She didn’t know what, if any, legal protections and benefits transgender employees at the C.I.A. were entitled to.

All she knew with certainty was that going through life as a man had become unbearable.

Rejecting an option that would have kept schools open on the Jewish High Holidays, the school board voted Thursday night to also give students off days to observe [the Hindu holiday] Diwali, [the Muslim holiday] Eid and the Lunar New Year.

The move to accommodate observances of additional religious holidays only applies to the 2016-17 school year while studies are conducted.

Numbers of area school systems have been making adjustments related to observing religious holidays.

Anne Arundel County Public Schools recently decided to open schools on Rosh Hashanah in 2016 for the first time in more than a decade. Teachers aren’t allowed to give tests and exams on that day or any other day of “major religious observances” such as Eid al-Adha and Yom Kippur.

The board said its action — in a unanimous 8-0 vote — was a one-year decision, for the 2016-2017 school year, that would come as the system of 55,000 students studies the issue and plans a voluntary survey of religious preferences. More broadly, Howard’s action is likely to draw attention as school systems nationally struggle with how to create an inclusive school calendar — balancing fairness, logistics and legal constraints — as their communities are increasingly diverse and vocal.

Maryland state law requires schools to be closed on Christmas and Good Friday, as well as Easter Monday. Howard schools have chosen to close for the Jewish holidays since 1979, when officials said staff absentee rates of 12 percent were interfering with instruction.

[even though] The school system does not record the religious backgrounds of its students.

[Superintendent Renee] Foose also recommended that the board hire an independent firm to survey and collect data about students' and families' religious and cultural observances, to inform the work of the 2017 to 2018 calendar committee.

[Board member Bess] Altwerger said that she agreed with the suggestion, but that the school system should recognize Lunar New Year Eve, Diwali and Eid al-Adha in the meantime. She found sympathetic views among most of her fellow board members.

Members of the East Asian, Muslim and Hindu communities have advocated for the inclusion of their religious holidays for at least the past two school years. Eid al-Adha, an important holiday on the Muslim calendar, and Diwali, equally as important for the Hindu community, have never been recognized on the county's school calendar before.

Last year after hearing requests from the Chinese and Korean communities, the board voted to place a professional development day on the Lunar New Year in the 2015-2016 school year. . . .

Because of the need for separation between church and state, [board member Sandie] French said, holidays cannot be given to students for religious reasons, but rather must be given for logistical reasons.

The "Walk a Mile in Her Hijab" event Wednesday, hosted by the 10-member organization, was designed to allow non-Muslim female students the opportunity to wear the head covering and gain a better understanding of the Muslim faith. "This event is to hopefully denounce negative stereotypes," [MSA president Yasmeen] Abdallah said.

Six members of the [MSA] group spent the morning placing hijabs on 17 non-Muslim girls who wanted to participate in the project. They also talked about the meaning of the hijab and facets of the Muslim religion to students who approached them.

Teachers and students at the school were encouraged to ask questions about the hijab when they came across a student wearing one.

Abdallah said the event was a good experience, one she hopes will become an annual event.

Christmas Parties Banned at Univ. of Tennessee

In an effort to increase "diversity and inclusion," UT Knoxville Chancellor Jimmy Cheek's Office of Diversity issued a directive that Christmas must be EXcluded from any "holiday parties" on campus.

"I could not believe that, especially in light of what's gone on the last couple of years with the debacle over sex week, then foolishness over the gender neutral pronouns that they put out a few months ago, and now we have the same group telling us that. I think it's another example of the University trying to look so brilliant, that to the everyday citizen, they look stupid."

Chancellor Cheek has issued a statement defending the memo.

It said, "As a diverse campus, we do promote ways to be inclusive of all cultures and religions. I am disappointed that our efforts to be inclusive have been totally misconstrued."

All nine of the state's Republicans in Congress spoke out forcefully against the guidelines . . .

Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey said UT Chancellor Jimmy Cheek should resign if he had anything to do with the guidelines, which are posted on the website of UT's Office for Diversity and Inclusion. Ramsey also hinted that the university could be stripped of its state funding.

U.S. Rep. Scott DesJarlais, a South Pittsburg, Tenn., Republican, slammed the holiday party suggestions as "nonsense" and said he would encourage the Tennessee General Assembly to investigate and, where necessary, "ensure that tax dollars are not being expended on this kind of frivolity."

On campus, students and faculty started online petitions in support of Cheek amid growing calls for his resignation.

"Students come to college to have an educational experience and engage in learning other peoples (sic) points of view both conservative and liberal," reads the petition, which is on the website change.org. "Although some in the Legislature may not realize that UT is a place for all students, Chancellor Cheek and Vice chancellor Hall have made this a priority. Over his time here he has worked to make this campus a place where students who are the majority and the minority can call home."

The university’s guidance warns students and faculty to “ensure your holiday party is not a Christmas party in disguise,” and to “not play games with religious and cultural themes” such as “Secret Santa.”  It warned that parties should have “no emphasis on religion or culture.”

“The Office of Diversity is not welcoming to all and hostile to none as they claim,” said [State] Senator Gresham.  “They are very hostile to students and other Tennesseans with Christian and conservative values.   By placing a virtual religious test regarding holiday events at this campus, every student who is a Christian is penalized.”

Senators Gresham and Bell criticized the Office of Diversity and Inclusion in August for a post on the university’s website asking students and faculty to toss out “he” and “she” when addressing students for gender-neutral pronouns like ”ze” and “zir”.  They also expressed disapproval over the university’s “Sex Week” which includes such events as drag shows, lectures given by a porn actress, an aphrodisiac cooking class and condom scavenger hunts.  Senators Gresham and Bell objected to student activity fees being used to help fund such events.

In a meeting this fall, the Senate Higher Education Committee found that UTK "far outspends" other universities in the state on their diversity programs, which goes far beyond the regulations required by state and federal law.

"Political correctness has been a scourge on American academia for too long," wrote [Lt. Gov.] Ramsey, R-Blountville. "If liberal arts universities in New York and Massachusetts wish to continue the practice that is up to them, but it has no place at institutions of higher learning in Tennessee."

"If the University of Tennessee cannot keep its house in order the General Assembly must shift funding to the University of Memphis, ETSU or other institutions of higher learning that don't embarrass us nationally on a regular basis," Ramsey said.

In a statement released Friday afternoon, Joe DiPietro — the UT system president who oversees campuses in Knoxville, Memphis, Martin and Chattanooga — said he respected the concerns of Ramsey and other Tennessee and federal lawmakers. He also praised [UT Knoxville Chancellor] Cheek, whom he credited with a series of “remarkable, transformative successes" at the Knoxville campus.

"We are in no way trying to dismiss this very important Christian holiday," Cheek said. "As a diverse campus, we do promote ways to be inclusive of all cultures and religions. I am disappointed that our efforts to be inclusive have been totally misconstrued."

The directive — entitled “Best Practices for Inclusive Holiday Celebrations in the Workplace” — instructed students and staff on how to effectively avoid the travesty of hosting a not very inclusive “holiday” party.

The reason for these intrusive measures is to make sure everyone “celebrate[s] your religious and cultural holidays in ways that are respectful and inclusive of our students.”

Christmas — the holiday the vast majority of Americans celebrate in December — is curiously treated by the memo as a minor festivity that’s only observed by a minority of students.

The desperate attempt to achieve “inclusion” at any and all level came at the expense of the vast majority’s wishes, which is typical for the aims of political correctness. The possibility that even one person of a designated protected class would be offended by a Christmas display is enough of a reason to purge all events of associations to the December holiday.

Wichita State Chapel Muslim Conversion = Uprising

The Wichita State University administration is backtracking as a result of public reaction to recent renovations of the Harvey D. Grace Memorial Chapel that removed the Christian cross, altar and pews in favor of a more mosque-like atmosphere complete with Muslim prayer rugs.  The university is also being pressured by naïve students and other liberals for more "inclusive" construction projects including additions of Islamic-compliant restrooms, showers, etc.

But dozens of Wichita residents learned about the renovation after Wichita State alumna Ann Cusick posted the changes to her Facebook page Friday and said taking out the pews marginalized Christians.

After that, university donors, alumni and others began posting comments and contacting university administrators.

Wichita State President John Bardo said Tuesday in a statement on the university's Facebook page that the school will consider changing the chapel's furnishings once again.

[Alumna Ann] Cusick posted about the chapel renovation as soon as she learned of it, on Friday, six months after it was settled. She included a photo from inside the chapel, showing the absence of pews. “The Muslims are ecstatic” about the renovation, she wrote in the post. “Sumpin’ NOT right here.”

By Monday, donors, alums and others were contacting WSU administrators, including Sexton, who serves a dual role as both student affairs vice president and executive athletic director.

. . . There was a more recent story in the campus paper reporting that hundreds of Muslim students had signed a petition asking WSU to install bidet shower heads in WSU restroom and showers. A hand-held bidet is used among Muslims as part of cleansing habits.

Right in the American Heartland, in the state of Kansas, a minority group of Muslim students have succeeded in taking over what used to be the Christian chapel of their university to the dismay of the school's majority Christian population.

But the Muslims now in control of the facility are dismissing the Christian outrage, calling it "Islamophobia," or prejudice against Muslims.

The Muslim students have also apparently taken over the university's student body and publication, the Wichita Eagle. Student body president Joseph Shepard told the Wichita Eagle that the Christian outrage is "coming from off-campus, not from the students here."

It should also be underscored that Christian students who used the chapel also favored taking out the pews to make the space more inviting to Bible study groups and interfaith events. The request came through the student government association.

Why not accommodate Muslims at Wichita State? They number about 1,000 out of the nearly 15,000 in the student body. As The Wichita Eagle also explained, most of the foreign Muslim students pay three times the tuition rate of in-state students.

Obviously, alumni of any university or college have an important role to play. They have a vested interest in the stability of their alma mater. But alumni who are good stewards understand that they shouldn’t meddle by imposing their prejudices.

. . . what happened at Wichita State wasn’t so much a renovation as it was a Christian cleansing. Anything remotely related to the décor of a Christian church was given the heave-ho.

The chapel’s stained glass windows are still intact – for now. But I would not be terribly surprised if they’re boarded up – for the sake of inclusivity.

This is what the Islamic transformation of a nation founded on Judeo-Christian values looks like, folks. The Christian faith is marginalized while the Islamic faith is given accommodation.

Administrators at Mason High School in suburban Cincinnati, Ohio collaborated with the Muslim Student Association to create The Covered Girl Challenge — a day when all girls would wear a hijab like Muslim women.  However when the school's announcement was publicized, parents and other taxpayers educated the school on the First Amendment, causing Principal Mindy McCarty-Stewart to cancel the event.

“I do not recall ever getting an email announcing a Christian Cross Wearing day or a booth for information about the Christian persecution from Islamic terrorists. What happen to the argument of the separation of church and state? My belief is wearing these hijabs represents the oppression of women and Sharia law.”

The event isn't unique to Mason High; it's held on college campuses and sometimes at high schools, said Karen Dabdoub, Executive Director of the Cincinnati Chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations [CAIR].

Mariam [a Muslim girl], one of the students who was helping organize the event, said her friends were excited to see what it would be like to wear a headscarf.

Mason and nearby West Chester have significant Muslim communities; school spokeswoman Tracey Carson said Mason High has several groups with religious affiliations.

"They don't leave their faith at the door," Carson said. "We want students to take leadership roles and educate their community."

Female students who wanted to participate were supposed to have their parents fill out a permission slip and return it to the high school office or “Mrs. Jenkin’s room in Z223.”

Mrs. Jenkins appears to be Caryn Jenkins, a social studies teacher at Mason High.

The [hijab] challenge was part of an event planned by the student organization, including information tables during the school day and a discussion after school.

The announcement prompted responses in the district and beyond, some questioning the event, including on Facebook and the website jihadwatch.org.

On Thursday, jihadwatch.org posted a story headlined, “Victory! Mason High school principal cancels hijab event, apologizes.”

“On this Facebook thread, people are whining about this being a victory for ‘bigotry and intolerance,’ but of its is no such thing. In reality, it is a victory for fairness in education,” the story said.

Yasmeen Allen is an Iraqi native with two teenagers at Mason High. Allen's daughter wears a hijab to mosque worship but not to school, Allen said, adding that the family is "really upset that the school is succumbing to outside pressure of racism and bigotry toward people who are different from them."

Muslim students "were robbed of an opportunity" to support their religion and counter some of the negativity it faces around the world, she said.

This is not the first Muslim-themed controversy to hit the Mason school community. About a decade ago, former school board candidate Sharon Poe and then-board member Jennifer Miller publicly blasted school officials for allowing Muslim students to have a separate lunch hour for fasting during Ramadan, which occurs during the ninth month of the Muslim calendar.

That is a holiday practice still continued at Mason schools. The area, however, is open to any student, regardless of faith, Carson said.

USC already had more than 50 religious leaders ministering to students of various faiths, said Varun Soni, dean of the school's Office of Religious Life. So it seemed only right, he added, to bring one in for non-believers seeking spiritual guidance.

"Spirituality is really engaged with the ultimate questions that make us human. The questions of meaning and purpose, of significance and authenticity," Soni said. "Many of our students who identify as religious find the answers to those questions through God. But we realize that not everyone does, and we want to be a resource to our entire university community."

In a Jan. 16 memo to Graduate Center faculty, reported by the [Wall Street] Journal, interim Provost Louise Lennihan wrote that the new policy was part of the school's "ongoing effort to ensure a respectful, welcoming and gender-inclusive learning environment ... and to accommodate properly the diverse population of current and prospective students."

The Graduate Center told The Huffington Post that the memo was actually aimed at advising faculty about the school's new preferred-name policy, which allows students to go by a moniker other than their legal name on certain university documents such as course rosters, student identification cards and student email addresses. The students simply have to fill out a form.

Faculty speech has not been restricted, Graduate Center President Chase F. Robinson told HuffPost in a statement. "The memo that was issued on January 16 was intended to provide guidance to administrators in addressing members of the community; as such, it offered advice and did not set, nor does it reflect, CUNY policy," he said.

The policy goes into effect during the Spring 2015 semester at the Manhattan public university, where some 5,000 students study in doctoral and master’s programs.

The memo came after wide consultation with many faculty, staff and students at the Graduate Center, said Ms. Domi, a school spokeswoman. She also said the school was “working within a regulatory framework to comply with Title IX legal principles,” a federal statute banning gender discrimination in educational settings that receive government funding.

Saundra Schuster, an attorney and Title IX consultant for universities, said the statute is intended to protect individuals from gender discrimination—no matter how they identify their gender, including transgender individuals. But, she added, “to say they must [bar gendered salutations] because of the law is ridiculous.”

“Title IX prohibits discrimination—nothing more,” he said in an email to The College Fix. “Unfortunately, this problematic justification is emblematic of a pattern that FIRE is increasingly concerned by: Title IX is being turned into a Swiss army knife that can be used by colleges and universities to justify (and provide political cover for) virtually any academic or institutional policy even tangentially related to sex or gender.”

“It’s difficult to find a principled reason why the perspectives of those who prefer traditional salutations should be valued less than the perspectives of those who favor their abandonment, and that is precisely why language policing is best avoided altogether—it always entails making distinctions based on subjective preferences for a particular viewpoint,” Cohn said.

I invited a [CAIR] speaker to talk to faculty about addressing Islamophobia in the classroom and the challenges in the Muslim world, and they appreciated the open and frank discussion.”

Rutten said the campus has many student organized cultural days, as a way to teach and understand diversity.

[Robert Spencer said,] “Would a Jewish or pro-Israel student be allowed to stage a similar day calling attention to anti-Semitism? If this included the rise in Islamic anti-Semitism in Europe and elsewhere, would this be allowed? Would you allow a Yarmulke Day at NP3 High?”

The Muslim call to prayer chant will now blare from a loud speaker of the bell tower at the Duke University Chapel every Friday in accordance with the Koran. Duke was founded by Methodists and continues its relationship with The United Methodist Church, but as of May 9, 2014, the Board of Trustees revised its mission statement to emphasize "generous hospitality towards diverse religious and cultural traditions . . . [and] to promote a respectful spirit of dialogue and understanding."

On Friday, the Muslim call to prayer will sound from the Duke Chapel, a new weekly tradition for the campus.

In a Duke University news release, Imam Adeel Zeb, Muslim chaplain at Duke, said: “The adhan is the call to prayer that brings Muslims back to their purpose in life, which is to worship God and serves as a reminder to serve our brothers and sisters in humanity. The collective Muslim community is truly grateful and excited about Duke’s intentionality toward religious and cultural diversity.”

Christy Lohr Sapp, the chapel’s associate dean for religious life, said in the release: “This opportunity represents a larger commitment to religious pluralism that is at the heart of Duke’s mission. It connects the university to national trends in religious accommodation.”

The Adhan will be sung in Arabic, then followed by an English translation, according to a Facebook event announcing the call.

The chapel also holds an interdenominational Christian service on Sunday mornings and a Catholic mass on Sunday evenings, along with other services and events. Omid Safi, director at Duke's Islamic Studies Center, told The Huffington Post that the response to the decision has been "overwhelmingly positive" thus far.

"Almost everyone that has written in has celebrated it as a sign of Duke University's commitment to creating a welcoming and pluralistic community," he said in an email Wednesday. "We see it as a sign of including our diversity -- yes, including our religious diversity -- in the public arena. We have over 700 Muslim members of the Duke community, and this is a day to be seen -- and, yes, heard. It is a validating experience to tell one another that we can and do co-exist not by denying our particularity, but through them. There is room at Duke for Christians, Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs, atheists, agnostics ... people of every faith and no faith."

Starting Friday, the Duke Muslim Students Association will chant the call, or adhan, from the Duke Chapel bell tower. The adhan signals the beginning of the weekly prayer service. It's ubiquitous in Muslim countries the world over; not so in the Carolina piedmont.

Various Christian denominations hold prayer and worship services in the chapel. The school also has spaces dedicated spaces on campus for various faiths, including Jews, Hindus and Buddhists.

"Just as the bells announce chapel worship in the building on Sundays, the adhan announces Muslim prayers on Fridays," the chapel said.

[Evangelist Franklin] Graham, the son of evangelist Billy Graham, urged people to withdraw their support of Duke until the policy is reversed.

“As Christianity is being excluded from the public square and followers of Islam are raping, butchering, and beheading Christians, Jews, and anyone who doesn’t submit to their Sharia Islamic law, Duke is promoting this in the name of religious pluralism,” Graham wrote on his Facebook page Wednesday.

Over the years, some of Graham’s critics have accused him of demonizing Islam.

Graham has defended his outspoken ways, saying he is simply speaking out like his father did in his younger years.

From "Duke University decision invites Sunni, Shiite conflict to campus" by Will Hall, Christian Examiner 1/15/15

According to the think tank Council on Foreign Affairs [CFR], it is the ancient religious divide between Sunnis and Shias that "have fed a Syrian civil war that threatens to transform the map of the Middle East ... and sparked a revival of transnational jihadi networks that poses a threat beyond the region."

But, university officials seem unaware of this deep religious divide within Islam, and at least publicly, have not addressed concerns sure to arise about whether they will honor both sects.

Even the issue of imams has divided the Islamic faithful and it relates to the origin of the conflict.

CFR summarizes that for mainstream Shias, there are only twelve imams, historic holy men, the last of which has been in a state of occultation, or "hiddenness," since 939 A.D. to return at the end of time. Consequently, for them an imam has a direct bloodline to Mohammad, through Husayn, the son of Ali who was the cousin, son-in-law and successor of Mohammad. Their senior clerics are called ayatollahs.

Sunnis, who compose 85 percent of the world's 1.6 billion Muslims, on the other hand, do not recognize a bloodline, but elect religious leaders. For them, imams are men who lead prayer services in mosques. Moreover, 40 percent of Sunnis, according to a 2012 Pew Research Center report, do not regard Shias as proper Muslims.

A JP Morgan Chase bank employee says he’s not only puzzled by an internal company survey that asked workers if they considered themselves friend of the lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgender community — he’s fearful of losing his job.

The unnamed employee reported to Professor Robert George of Princeton, who runs a law blog, that this year’s company survey — which is distributed to employees annually as a means of gauging work satisfaction — asked respondents to note if they were disabled, had children or spouses and domestic spouses with disabilities and were members of the LGBT community, Breitbart reported.

But the last question was the most controversial. It read, Breitbart reported: “Are you … an ally of the LGBT community, but not personally identifying as LGBT?”

In Salt Lake City, American Express workers carried giant letters that spelled, "Love=Love," the theme of the parade. JPMorgan Chase marchers wore T-shirts that said, "just be you." A Budweiser's semi-truck festooned with rainbow flags drove slowly through the parade, honking its horns.

At the 43rd Motor City Pride Festival in Detroit, banners were adorned with corporate logos, including those of General Motors, Ford, Comerica bank, Kroger and Whole Foods Market. Delta Air Lines employees handed out day packs, luggage tags and the same cookies that passengers get.

. . . major corporations [are] expanding supplier diversity programs to include certified LGBT-owned businesses, helping to spur rapid growth at LGBT chambers of commerce across the country.

. . . LGBT gains in the business community mean the once newsworthy is now commonplace. Even Wells Fargo tapping a gay Latino man, Victor Aranda, as San Francisco market president earlier this year didn't garner the headlines it might have at one time. . . . Last year, the bank supported 50 local Pride parades and celebrations nationwide and will have more than 150 employees participating in San Francisco's Pride parade this weekend.

Today, Wells is joined by Genentech, U.S. Bank, (NYSE: USB) New York Life and other companies that have expanded their supplier diversity efforts to include LGBT-owned businesses. Oakland-based Kaiser Permanente, which expects to have 500 participants in this weekend's Pride parade, recently expanded its supplier-diversity program.

The Proud Whopper, as it's called, comes wrapped in a rainbow colored wrapper with this inscription: "We are all the same inside."

"It showcases who we are as a brand," says Fernando Machado, senior vice president of global brand management at Burger King. "It shows how we, as a brand, believe in self expression."

The move also demonstrates BK's desire to stay connected to its base of Millennial customers. Gay rights is an issue that reverberates strongly with many Millennials both inside and outside the U.S. Burger King also was a sponsor of San Francisco's gay pride parade. Machado says that's the first time Burger King has sponsored a gay pride parade in the U.S., though it may have sponsored some outside the country.

All Proud Whopper sandwich sales, Machado says, will be donated to the Burger King McLamore Foundation for scholarships benefiting LGBT high school seniors graduating in spring 2015.

UPDATE 7/28/15: From "Facebook, Corporate Giants Back New LGBT Protections" by Philip Elliott, Time Magazine

Food conglomerate General Mills, Nike, American Airlines and Facebook were set to sign onto anti-discrimination legislation known as the Equality Act, the companies said in statements obtained by TIME ahead of their release. The corporate giants, long supporters of gay rights, are joining peers Apple, Dow Chemicals and Levi Strauss in lobbying Congress for that legislation. It was the latest sign that opponents of gay rights are finding themselves standing opposed to business interests. And while the public messaging is clear — the makers of such everyday goods want LGBT Americans to have easier everyday lives — there is an admitted financial interests in adding loyal customers to these brands.

Federal lawmakers now are considering a sweeping non-discrimination law that would bar individuals from being denied services — including housing and jobs but also mortgages and education — based on their sexuality or gender identity. . . .

In crafting the bill, lawmakers consulted a coalition that included the NAACP, the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund and National Council on La Raza in the hopes of pitching the new legislation as a civil rights bill for the 21st Century. The American Civil Liberties Union, the National Women’s Law Center and the Human Rights Campaign also offered their advice.
