Atheist Soldier Sues Army for Evangelizing Muslims

The Military Religious Freedom Foundation . . . with Spc. Dustin Chalker is suing Secretary Robert Gates over alleged violations of religious rights.

-- From "Attorneys for atheist soldier to amend lawsuit" Associated Press 12/16/08

Chalker, an atheist, claims he has been forced to attend mandatory military formations where Christian prayers are given.

The videos show soldiers and Christian missionaries talking about their faith and the desire to spread Christianity to Muslims. The video also shows the missionaries, who were embedded with units, handing out Dari language Bibles.

The video was from a Trinity Broadcasting Network program, “Travel the Road,” which features missionaries Will Decker and Tim Scott going to remote locations to spread Christianity. The video aired in April 2006 on TBN and was filmed in Afghanistan with members of the Oklahoma National Guard.

[The atheist's attorney] said such activities put the U.S. military in danger of attacks and gives credence to the belief in the Muslim community that the United States is on a crusade to spread Christianity.

The lawsuit cited examples of the military’s religious discrimination by fundamentalist Christians, including programs for soldiers, presentations by “anti-Muslim activists” and a “spiritual handbook” for soldiers endorsed by Gen. David Petraeus, the commander of U.S. Central Command.

Obama Celebration of Homosexuals with their Instruments

. . . the Blazing River Freedom Band of the larger Lesbian and Gay Band Association . . . is made up of concert and marching bands from cities across the country.

-- From "Gay and lesbian band members from Ohio to play in Obama parade" by Stephen Koff, Washington Bureau Chief, the Cleveland Plain Dealer 12/15/08

This will be the first inaugural parade with an openly lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender group. The Lesbian and Gay Band Association played for President Clinton's two inaugurations, but only as sideline, pre-parade entertainment.

"I am honored to invite these talented groups and individuals to participate in the Inaugural Parade," Obama said in a statement earlier this month. "These organizations embody the best of our nation's history, diversity and commitment to service."

Hate Crime: Sarah Palin's Church Torched

Attempted murder of several churchgoers, including children, at the Wasilla Bible Church not declared a "hate crime" by authorities, despite the well-known fact that Palin-hating liberals reside in Alaska.

UPDATE 1/28/09: Murder intent

-- From "Palin's church targeted by arsonist" by Mark Kelly, Asst. Editor, Baptist Press, 12/16/08

The arsonist who tried to set fire to Wasilla Bible Church -- the home congregation of former Republican vice presidential candidate and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin -- placed accelerants at building exits and almost certainly knew people were in the building at the time.

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives found accelerants in several locations outside the church building, including doorways, ATF spokesman Nick Starcevic told the Anchorage Daily News. Five people, including two children, were inside Dec. 12 when the fire was set just before 9:40 p.m., and a half-dozen cars were in the parking lot at the time, according to the congregation's senior pastor, Larry Kroon.

The building's occupants all escaped unharmed and the most serious damage was limited to a back corner of the church where offices and a classroom were located. The blaze caused an estimated $1 million in damage to the two-year-old building, which is valued at upwards of $4 million, according to news reports.

The ATF spokesman said it was unclear what type of accelerant had been used in the crime, but samples had been sent to the state crime lab in Anchorage for testing. Wasilla police said authorities had no suspects or motive at this point. Kroon told reporters he did not recall the church receiving any threats.

Public Universities Overwhelmingly Violate First Amendment

Study reveals "that American colleges and universities systematically violate students' and faculty members' right to freedom of expression."

-- From "Public Universities Overwhelmingly Violate First Amendment" FIRE Press Release 12/15/08

Spotlight on Speech Codes 2009: The State of Free Speech on Our Nation's Campuses reports on policies at 364 American colleges and universities. [The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education] found that approximately 74 percent of schools surveyed maintain policies that clearly restrict speech that, outside the borders of campus, is protected by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

"Unfortunately, this year's report demonstrates that—despite decades of precedent declaring speech codes unlawful and two decisions this year alone—the majority of colleges and universities brazenly maintain policies that violate students' and faculty members' fundamental rights," FIRE President Greg Lukianoff said. "Everyone who values the free exchange of ideas should be deeply disturbed by these findings."

FIRE's report is the most comprehensive effort to date both to quantify the proportion of colleges and universities that restrict free speech and to assess the severity of those restrictions.

Homosexual Activists Protest at Pro-Gay Movie

Yes, it's convoluted: Texas activists are protesting a movie theater corporation gaining revenue by showing a pro-gay movie, because the corporation CEO (but NOT the corporation) donated money to support traditional marriage in California (Proposition 8).

-- From "Gay rights protestors to boycott Cinemark’s showing of ‘Milk’" by Heather M. Smith, Staff writer, Plano Courier Star 12/12/08

Friday night protestors gathered to boycott showings of the recently released movie “Milk” at the Cinemark Legacy in Plano. The protestors are expected to return on Saturday.

“Milk,” starring Sean Penn, is about Harvey Milk, a gay rights activist from the 1970s.

Israel Luna, a gay independent filmmaker from Dallas, serves as segment producer for DVtv, Dallas Voice’s online video news outlet. This is the first time Luna has organized a protest. He said the recent controversy surrounding Cinemark and the movie inspired him to get involved.

Luna said he first learned of the protests around the country on FaceBook and through the campaign “No Milk for Cinemark.”

“This issue is important because we want to give a message to people in higher positions that if they have an archaic way of thinking, there will be consequences,” Luna said.

The issue that sparked Luna’s involvement in the protest is that Cinemark CEO Alan Stock contributed $9,999 to Yes on 8, the campaign to outlaw same-sex marriage in California. Now Cinemark, the nation’s third-largest theater chain, will profit from showings of “Milk.”

In an e-mailed statement the Plano-based company released, Cinemark officials said it “did not make any financial contribution to either side on the Proposition 8 vote in California.”

Iowa Drops Employee Ban on Christian Charities

Lawsuit persuades Iowa officials to allow state workers to choose Christian causes for payroll deductions

-- From "State ban on Christian charities dropped" © 2008 WorldNetDaily 12/12/08

It's at least the fourth state in which the dispute has arisen, according to officials.

The newest situation has been resolved with an agreement from the Iowa Department of Administration to let state workers contribute to faith-based charities under the state's Iowa One Gift program, the [Alliance Defense Fund] said.

"Religious charities providing critical social services should not be discriminated against simply because they practice their religious beliefs and hire persons who share them," said M. Casey Mattox, litigation counsel for the Center for Law & Religious Freedom of the Christian Law Society, which also worked on the case.

Officials said the state agreed to correct rules that previously excluded faith-based organizations from getting voluntary donations through a payroll deduction system.

The same issue also has arisen in Florida, Michigan and Wisconsin, officials said.

Sin Erased from British Lexicon

Dictionary publisher eliminates words no longer in use because "Britain is a modern, multicultural, multifaith society"

-- From "Words associated with Christianity and British history taken out of children's dictionary" by Julie Henry, Education Correspondent, London Telegraph 12/8/08

Oxford University Press has removed words like . . . Abbey, aisle, altar, bishop, chapel, christen, disciple, minister, monastery, monk, nun, nunnery, parish, pew, psalm, pulpit, saint, sin, devil, vicar

"We have a certain Christian narrative which has given meaning to us over the last 2,000 years. To say it is all relative and replaceable is questionable," said Professor Alan Smithers, the director of the centre for education and employment at Buckingham University. "The word selections are a very interesting reflection of the way childhood is going, moving away from our spiritual background and the natural world and towards the world that information technology creates for us."

Lisa Saunders, a worried mother who has painstakingly compared entries from the junior dictionaries, aimed at children aged seven or over, dating from 1978, 1995, 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2007, said she was "horrified" by the vast number of words that have been removed, most since 2003.

"The Christian faith still has a strong following," she said. "To eradicate so many words associated with the Christianity will have a big effect on the numerous primary schools who use it."

Darwinism Comes out of the Closet in Florida Schools

New law mandates teaching evolution, defeating "critical analysis" of biological diversity

-- From "State, Treasure Coast educators crafting guidelines to teach evolution" by James Kirley, TCPalm.com 11/30/08

The state Board of Education changed 12-year-old science standards Feb. 19 to require teaching the scientific theory of evolution in Florida for the first time. The standards passed against opposition, much of it faith-based, that contends evolution is just one way to explain the diversity of life on earth.

Florida legislators opposed to teaching evolution introduced bills last spring to mandate a "critical analysis" of evolution and to protect teachers who offer other explanations of biological diversity. Both failed to gain the support needed to become law.

EXAMPLES OLD AND NEW

•The 1996 state benchmarks required students to understand that changes in the earth's climate, geology and life forms can be traced and compared. Students learned that, "earth's systems and organisms are the result of long, continuous change over time" and that mutation and natural selection are mechanisms of change. "Items (taught) will NOT refer to evolution," the benchmarks stated.

•New benchmarks adopted statewide in February state, "The theory of evolution is the fundamental concept underlying all of biology" and that "natural selection is a primary mechanism leading to evolutionary change."

'Evangelical Leader' Shifting Toward Same-sex 'Marriage'

An influential evangelical leader is coming under fire for saying in a National Public Radio interview he believes in homosexual civil unions and that Christians who oppose same-sex marriage and abortion may still find reasons to support Obama.

UPDATE (12/11/08): Cizik resigns NAE position after backlash from comments below.

-- From "Evangelical leader supports 'gay' civil unions" © 2008 WorldNetDaily 12/5/08

Richard Cizik is chief lobbyist and vice president for governmental affairs for the National Association of Evangelicals, representing 45,000 U.S. churches from 59 denominations. He told NPR Dec. 2 he is "shifting" on "gay" marriage, he has an aversion to Sarah Palin and that he voted for Obama in the Virginia primary, LifeNews reported.

Cizik told NPR a candidate's character and party values are more significant to him than specific issues such as abortion and same-sex marriage.

"It would be possible for evangelicals to disagree with Barack Obama on same sex marriage and abortion and yet vote for him."

Cizik, named one of Time's most influential people, called Palin's stance on the environment "ignorance." He also said she lacked humility, unlike Obama. Prior to the election, he told the Independent, "Not everyone in the evangelical movement is fawning over Sarah Palin."

According to the report, Cizik suggested Christians should redirect their focus away from the debate about "gay" marriage.

"Maybe we need to reevaluate this and look at it a little differently," he told NPR. "I'm always looking for ways to reframe issues. Give the biblical point of view a different slant."

Kansas Supreme Court Decides Against Planned Parenthood

County D.A. allowed to retain abortion medical records for prosecution of Planned Parenthood charged with performing illegal late-term abortions and falsifying records

-- From "Despite harsh words, Kline gets to keep abortion records" by Joe Lambe And Laura Bauer, The Kansas City Star 12/5/08

In a 40-page ruling Friday, the Kansas Supreme Court slammed Johnson County District Attorney Phill Kline for his handling of an ongoing abortion case.

But in the end, after justices called Kline’s actions inexcusable and accused him of not having respect for the law, he got what he wanted.

Kline gets to keep medical records of women treated at Planned Parenthood in Overland Park — the basis of his pending 107-count criminal case against the clinic. He only has to provide copies of all investigative materials to the Kansas attorney general. They’re due next Friday.

That means the records will remain at the district attorney’s office and Kline’s successor, Steve Howe, will have them if he continues the case once he takes the helm in January.

Planned Parenthood wanted Kline to relinquish all records and the high court to hold him in contempt and fine him. Attorney General Steve Six said he wanted “any and all” evidence Kline developed during his investigation.

Peter Brownlie, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri, said he was disappointed that the court didn’t order Kline to hand over all the records — only copies — and didn’t hold him in contempt.

The case goes back to 2003 when Kline, then the Kansas attorney general, launched an investigation into the Overland Park clinic and Wichita abortion doctor George Tiller.

He requested, and eventually obtained, medical records — with patient identifiers removed — which he used to file charges against Tiller just before he left office. Those charges later were dismissed.

American Anglicans Form New Denomination

Attention American Christians: Consider this as instructive for all of us (how to respond to attacks)

Wednesday evening in Wheaton, IL, former Episcopal Church USA clergy announce the creation of the Anglican Church in North America, believed to include about 100,000 Christians

Nearly 1,000 Christians, including Anglican and former ECUSA clergy from around the globe, packed a loaned worship center (of the Wheaton Evangelical Free Church). To say that the atmosphere was worshipful would be an understatement!

The historic occasion included the official signing of the Jerusalem Declaration, but the hours-long gathering was a glorious worship experience that included prayers, Scripture reading, recitation of the Nicene Creed, teaching, traditional organ hymn singing, contemporary praise singing, and the celebration of the Holy Eucharist.

The congregants were visibly worshipful, and enthusiastic in their thanksgiving to God for His blessings, and bringing them out of the persecution of the apostate ECUSA, and providing for their new Bible-believing and confessing church.

So, how is this Anglican event instructive to other American Christians? These Anglican Christians have demonstrated how all Christians must react when Jesus Christ is attacked. These Anglicans in America did not cower within their local churches as their ECUSA leadership abandoned Scriptural Authority in favor of the popular culture. Rather, these Christians spoke out and took action against their heretical persecutors.

The question to American Christians is, Does it take the equivalent of a 9/11 attack to garner the attention of people who proclaim the mantel of Christ? Will the evil incrementalism be an effective weapon against slumbering churches?

As Jesus Christ is being assaulted both from within churches, by apostate and heretical leadership, and from outside the church, by pagan/secular forces, will American churches stand in the name of God Almighty despite the "risk" of persecution?

American Christians are in the position of the perverbial frog in the pot of water on the stove. Satan is very slowly turning up the heat, such that the cowering and reclusive Christians are about to be unwittingly cooked.

To quote the new Archbishop, Robert Duncan of the Anglican Church in North America: "It's time to be ready!" Mark 13:24-37

-- From "It's About Theology, Not Territory" by Albert Mohler 12/5/08

. . . conservative Anglican leaders met in Wheaton, Illinois to plan for a future province of the Anglican Communion -- in this case a province determined by theological conviction, not geographical designation.

As The New York Times reported . . . The move threatens the fragile unity of the Anglican Communion, the world’s third-largest Christian body, made up of 38 provinces around the world that trace their roots to the Church of England and its spiritual leader, the Archbishop of Canterbury.

The strange part of that account is the statement that this move "threatens the fragile unity of the Anglican Communion." That fragile unity was shattered by the actions of more liberal churches in North America to bless same-sex unions, ordain homosexual ministers, and elect an openly-homosexual bishop. The lack of unity is what has prompted the establishment of this new denomination.

Indeed, this division among the Anglicans and related national churches can be traced directly back to the Anglican Communion's failure to establish and maintain doctrinal boundaries and a clear affirmation of biblical authority. Liberals and conservatives have been increasingly at odds over a host of issues related to biblical authority.

The announcement of the Anglican Church in North America is good news. The big question is just how many churches and dioceses will join this new province and depart the Episcopal Church. Officials with the Episcopal Church sought to downplay the development, suggesting that the new group was rejecting the denomination's commitment to diversity. In the eyes of those forming the Anglican Church in North America, the Episcopal Church has rejected the Bible.

Nevertheless, the fact that the establishment of the Anglican Church of North America was motivated by explicitly theological concerns and commitments is a sign of hope. The battle for biblical authority arises again and again, and it is good that these leaders recognize the centrality of this commitment.

WA: Anti-Nativity Scene at Capitol Countered

Atheists: "Religion is but myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds"

-- From "Atheists' sign at Capitol spurs protest, counter-signs" by Janet I. Tu, Seattle Times religion reporter 12/4/08

A protest, several counter-signs and a news conference are the latest in a flurry of activity spurred by a sign put up Monday by an atheist group [Freedom From Religion Foundation] in the Capitol building in Olympia. It was partly a response to a Nativity scene put up nearby by a private citizen.

Steve Wilson, 28, of Federal Way . . . who attends the nondenominational Christian Faith Center, said atheists have a right to air their views but that the sign they put up is disparaging to people of all faiths.

His plan is to hold "a pro-faith rally rather than an anti-atheist" demonstration, he said. "We just want to go show our support for people of faith. We don't want any hate. We want to display a message of God's love for all people."

On Friday, Pastor Ken Hutcherson of Redmond's Antioch Bible Church, plans to hold a news conference at the Capitol to unveil his own sign, which says, in part: "There is one God.... Atheism is but myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds."

[Responding,] the governor and attorney general's office [issued] a statement saying that "the U.S. Supreme Court has been consistent and clear that, under the Constitution's First Amendment, once government admits one religious display or viewpoint onto public property, it may not discriminate against the content of other displays, including the viewpoints of nonbelievers."

Planned Parenthood Criminal in Serial Rape Coverups

UCLA pro-life group is in the process of releasing several covert videos shot in Planned Parenthood clinics across America wherein clinic workers participate in covering up instances of statutory rape.

-- From "Second Video Shows Planned Parenthood Not Reporting Girl's Statutory Rape" by Steven Ertelt, LifeNews.com Editor 12/3/08

Indiana Planned Parenthood Covers Up Sexual Abuse of 13-year Old - Funny videos are here

UCLA student journalist Lila Rose posed as a 13-year-old girl. In an appointment with a Planned Parenthood nurse at its center in Bloomington [Indiana], Rose says she has been impregnated by a 31-year-old man, a clear case of child molestation under Indiana state law.

On tape, the nurse acknowledges her responsibility to report the abuse, but assures Rose she will not.

The nurse then instructs Rose how to obtain a secret abortion by crossing state lines in order to avoid Indiana's parental consent law and she coaches Rose on how to cover for the 31-year-old man by saying he is only 14.

Rose said she and other students in the UCLA pro-life group Live Action recorded the video over the summer in a multi-state investigation of the abortion industry.

She told LifeNews.com that the video is "demonstrating the routine lawlessness of abortion providers at Planned Parenthood."

-- From "Planned Parenthood suspends employee after video on abortion counseling" by Marcela Creps, Herald Times of Bloomington, Indiana 12/3/08

A local Planned Parenthood employee has been suspended after the release of a video surreptitiously shot at a clinic which shows a woman who identifies herself as a 13-year-old being given advice that is a violation of the organization’s policies.

A statement by Betty Cockrum, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Indiana: “We are deeply concerned about the content of the video,” the prepared statement read. “While we cannot be certain whether this video has been altered, the apparent actions of the employee would be in violation of our strict policies and procedures. Therefore, a thorough internal investigation of this matter has begun, and the employee has been put on an immediate, unpaid suspension. Further disciplinary action will be taken if warranted by the investigation.”

A sexual act between an adult and a person who has not reached his or her 14th birthday must be reported to the Department of Child Protective Services or a law enforcement agency, Cockrum said.

Asked what the consequences are for a medical provider not following this procedure, Cockrum said, “It puts that employee at risk with their employment,” and not reporting the incident is a misdemeanor criminal offense.

-- From "Video Expose' Shows Planned Parenthood Abortion Center Hiding Statutory Rape" by Steven Ertelt LifeNews.com Editor 11/30/08

The national pro-life student group decided to stage an undercover investigation after LifeNews.com reports about a 14-year-old Ohio girl who was victimized.

In the Ohio case, the girl's parents filed a lawsuit against Planned Parenthood of Southwest Ohio for violating the state's parental notification law by not telling them of her abortion, which may have been coerced.

Another girl sued the same Planned Parenthood abortion business saying she had been raped by her father and that the facility failed to notify authorities.

Students for Life of America wanted to know if this same failure to protect girls from abuse was happening in other states.

In June, a college student talked with staff at the Charlotte [North Carolina] Planned Parenthood center posing as a 15 year-old girl who had unprotected sex with her 30-year-old mother's live-in boyfriend. The student tells Planned Parenthood officials the boyfriend suggested she go there to obtain the morning after pill.

Planned Parenthood staffers acknowledged the girl was a victim of statutory rape and admitted they were required to report the incident.

Calif. Government Favors Booze over Jesus

A federal judge scolded San Diego County for closing a Christian church's worship center and ordered officials to process permits needed by the congregation to remedy violations.

-- From "Judge scolds San Diego County for closing church" by Alyssa Farah © 2008 WorldNetDaily 11/28/08

The ruling found that Guatay Christian Fellowship, on Old Highway 80 in San Diego County, probably will win its lawsuit against the county, which had shut down the building and banned the congregation from meeting there over a zoning issue.

County officials said the building could be used for a bar, but not worship, and ordered the church, which had rented the building for nearly 25 years, to close under the threat of criminal penalties and fines of up to $2,500 per day.

The county also threatened to contact the electrical company and instruct it to cut power to the structure.

However, U.S. District Judge Jeffrey T. Miller, in his ruling, said, "The county's actions in this case were draconian," according to the officials with Pacific Justice Institute, which worked on the case.

Cardinal to Politicians: Vote for Abortion? You're Excommunicated!

Catholic members of Congress who vote for the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) could face “automatic excommunication” if the act is determined to be “formal cooperation” in the evil of abortion.

-- From "Catholics Who Vote for Freedom of Choice Act Could Face Automatic Excommunication" by Matt Hadro, CNSNews.com 11/19/08

When asked last week whether a Catholic politician voting for the FOCA – which would impose nationwide abortion on demand and government funding of abortion – would incur automatic excommunication from the Catholic Church, Cardinal Francis George of Chicago said the question would need to be discussed once the actual language of the bill was known.

George is president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).

“The categories in moral theology about cooperating in evil, which make you complicit in the evil even though you don’t do it yourself, are material cooperation, which is usually remote and therefore doesn’t involve you in the moral action except in a very auxiliary and minor way, and formal cooperation, which would involve you even though you are not doing it, in the way that makes you culpable,” said George.

President-elect Barack Obama promised in his campaign to sign FOCA. As introduced in the current Congress, FOCA denies all federal, state and local governments the power to interfere with a woman’s “choice” to abort a baby, and prohibits “discriminating against the exercise of those rights in the regulation or provision of benefits, facilities, services, or information.”

Fr. Frank Pavone of the Priests for Life told CNSNews.com: “Any legislator who would vote for such an extreme piece of pro-abortion legislation [FOCA], and any executive who would sign it or judge who would uphold it, or even a citizen who would lobby in any way in favor of it, would be committing a serious sin, objectively speaking. It is cooperation with evil in a totally unjustified way.”

Dr. Mark Miravalle, a theology professor at the Franciscan University of Steubenville, said of a Catholic politician voting for FOCA, “I think you would have to conclude that it would be a formal act, a formal cooperation [in the act of abortion].”

The purpose of FOCA, he continued, “is to ensure the right of a woman to have an abortion.”

When asked about a pro-abortion Catholic politician seeking to receive Holy Communion, Dr. Mark Miravalle said, “Canonically, based on scandal, and based on proper protection of the Eucharist, no pro-abortion, pro-choice Catholic politician should be admitted to receive Holy Communion.”

Abortion Linked to Mental Health Disorders

Refuting claims to the contrary, a new study has documented risks for a myriad of psychiatric disorders resulting from induced abortions

-- From "New Study Shows Direct Link Between Abortion and Mental Health Problems" by Steven Ertelt, LifeNews.com Editor 11/28/08

The number of cases of mental health issues rose by as much as 17 percent in women having abortions compared to those who didn't have one and the risks of each particular mental health problem rose as much as 145% for post-abortive women.

For 12 out of 15 of the mental health outcomes examined, a decision to have an abortion resulted in an elevated risk for women.

"Abortion was found to be related to an increased risk for a variety of mental health problems (panic attacks, panic disorder, agoraphobia, PTSD, bipolar disorder, major depression with and without hierarchy), and substance abuse disorders after statistical controls were instituted for a wide range of personal, situational, and demographic variables," they wrote.

"Calculation of population attributable risks indicated that abortion was implicated in between 4.3% and 16.6% of the incidence of these disorders," they concluded.

The researchers found women who had abortions, compared with those who didn't had a 120% risk for alcohol abuse, with or without dependence, a 145% increased risk of alcohol dependence, 79% increased risk of drug abuse with or without dependence and a 126% increase in the risk of drug dependence.

For mood disorders, the experience of an abortion increased risk of developing bipolar disorder by 167%, major depression without hierarchy by 45% and major depression with hierarchy by 48%.

For anxiety disorders, there was a 111% increased risk for panic disorders, 44% increased risk for panic attacks, 59% increased risk for PTSD, 95% increased risk for agoraphobia with or without panic disorder and a 93% increased risk for agoraphobia without panic disorder.

There was no mental health outcome showing abortion to have decreased the risk or a high risk for women who did not have an abortion.

Priest Calls Catholic Obama Voters to Confession

"If you are one of the 54% of Catholics who voted for a pro-abortion candidate, you were clear on his position and you knew the gravity of the question, I urge you to go to confession before receiving communion. Don't risk losing your state of grace by receiving sacrilegiously."

-- From "Modesto pastor condemns votes for Obama" by Sue Nowicki, The Modesto Bee 11/28/08

MODESTO -- Father Joseph Illo, pastor of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, has told parishioners in a homily and in a follow-up letter that if they voted for Barack Obama, they should consider going to confession because of the president-elect's pro-choice position.

The letter was sent to more than 15,000 members of the St. Joseph's parish. It is one of 34 parishes in the Stockton Diocese, which has more than 200,000 members in Stanislaus, San Joaquin and four other counties.

Though Obama's support of abortion rights angered many Catholics nationally during the campaign, Illo's letter is believed to be the first in Central California from a priest to his parishioners on the topic.

The Most Rev. Stephen Blaire, bishop of the Stockton Diocese, disagrees with Illo.

In Economic Crisis, Al-Qaida Claims Victory

Al-Qaida's No. 2 leader appeared in a new video posted Friday calling on Americans to embrace Islam to overcome the financial meltdown, which he said was a consequence of the Sept. 11 attacks and militant strikes in Iraq and Afghanistan.

-- From "Al-Qaida No. 2 to US: Overcome meltdown with Islam" by the Associated Press 11/28/08

Appearing in a white turban and robe, [Ayman al-Zawahri] discussed the roots of the U.S. economic crisis. He said it was a repercussion of the Sept. 11 attacks in the United States, and that the crisis would continue "as long as the foolish American policy of wading in Muslim blood continues."

"The American economy was afflicted by a downturn and loss of investor confidence in the market following the events of Sept. 11," he said.

"The modern economy has been destroyed by the strikes of the mujahedeen (in Iraq and Afghanistan) and usury," he said, using the Arabic term for holy warriors.

Under Islamic Sharia law, usury, like drinking alcohol, is among the grand sins.

Zawahri then called on the American people to "embrace Islam to live a life free of greed, exploitation and forbidden wealth."

Planned Parenthood's Holiday Gift of Death

In the TV news video here, Planned Parenthood in Indiana explains how they see gift certificates for services, including abortion, is just what the devil ordered in these tough economic times -- the gift that keeps on killing!

-- From "Gift certificates for Planned Parenthood" by Leslie Olsen (edited by Hyacinth Williams) WISH TV-8 11/25/08

For the first time, Planned Parenthood in Indiana is offering gift certificates. The organization said a big increase in calls and visits from newly unemployed and uninsured Hoosiers prompted what it calls the unusual, yet practical gift option.

The certificates come in $25 increments. They can be used for everything from birth control to $58 examinations that include breast exams and pap tests. Men who receive healthcare at Planned Parenthood can use them too.

Some Hoosiers 24-Hour News 8 talked to asked if the gift certificates could be used towards abortions. The answer is yes. But, Planned Parenthood said that's not the purpose of the gift certificates.

"They really are intended for preventative healthcare. We decided not to put restrictions on the gift certificates so it's for whatever people feel they need the services for most," [said Chrystal Struben-Hall, Vice President of Planned Parenthood of Indiana].

Indiana Family Institute President Curt Smith said he is appalled by the certificates.

"I think the way to help family planning is to give the money where there's no agenda. So if somebody wants to help a woman at a time of crisis, they can support the life centers throughout Indiana," said Smith.
