Planned Parenthood Caught Selling Aborted Babies

Numerous state and federal investigations are expected as a result of a newly published undercover video in which Dr. Deborah Nacatola, Senior Director of Medical Services for Planned Parenthood, discusses marketing harvested human body parts for $30-$100 per specimen and explains techniques, including partial birth abortion, to obtain intact organs, including complete heads:
"We've been very good at getting heart, lung, liver, because we know that, so I'm not gonna crush that part, I'm gonna basically crush below, I'm gonna crush above, and I'm gonna see if I can get it all intact. . . . And with the calvarium [the head], in general, some people will actually try to change the presentation so that it's not vertex [head first]. . . . So if you do it starting from the breech presentation, there's dilation that happens as the case goes on, and often, the last step, you can evacuate an intact calvarium at the end."

-- From "Covert Video Targets Planned Parenthood Fetal-Parts Policy" by David Crary, National Writer, Associated Press 7/14/15

Anti-abortion activists on Tuesday released an undercover video showing a senior Planned Parenthood official discussing the disposition of parts from aborted fetuses.

The activists contended the video reveals illegalities, but Planned Parenthood said the activity in question was the legal, not-for-profit donation of fetal tissue to research firms.

The video was made covertly last year, depicting a lunchtime conversation between Dr. Deborah Nucatola, Planned Parenthood's senior director of medical services, and anti-abortion activists posing as potential buyers for a human biologics company.

Commercial sale of human fetal tissue is illegal under federal law, but non-commercial tissue donation is allowed if the woman undergoing an abortion gives her consent.

From "Planned Parenthood targeted by undercover video" posted at CBS News 7/15/15

The video was produced by the Irvine, California-based Center for Medical Progress, which released it in collaboration with several national anti-abortion organizations that called for a congressional investigation.

In Louisiana, Gov. Bobby Jindal, who is among the large field of Republican presidential candidates, directed the state health department to launch an investigation even though Planned Parenthood doesn't perform abortions there.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott also ordered an investigation. In a statement Tuesday night, Abbott called the video "unnerving and appalling." He says he has directed the Texas Health and Human Services Commission to immediately investigate the alleged practice. That's in addition to a separate investigation ordered by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. Both men are Republicans who have participated in efforts to tighten restrictions on access to abortions in Texas.

From "Anti-Abortion Group Accuses Planned Parenthood of Selling Fetal Organs" by Kimberly Leonard, U.S. News & World Report 7/14/15

A YouTube video purporting to show a high-level Planned Parenthood doctor talking about harvesting tissue from aborted fetuses went viral among anti-abortion groups Tuesday, but the women’s health organization countered that tissue donation is not out of the ordinary, even after abortion procedures.

The video was posted by The Center for Medical Progress, a California-based non-profit which describes itself as "a group of citizen journalists dedicated to monitoring and reporting on medical ethics and advances." It was shot by a team led by David Daleiden, formerly the director of research for anti-abortion group Live Action.

"Planned Parenthood’s criminal conspiracy to make money off of aborted baby parts reaches to the very highest levels of their organization," Daleiden said in a statement.

Planned Parenthood said the video was heavily edited and misrepresented its work, and that all women who donate tissues after terminating a pregnancy have given their consent. The clip that went viral was nearly 9 minutes long, while the expanded version of the video runs for 2 hours and 40 minutes.

From "Undercover video shows Planned Parenthood official discussing fetal organs used for research" by Sandhya Somashekhar and Danielle Paquette, Washington Post 7/14/15

The video threatens to reignite a long-standing debate over the use of fetal tissue harvested through abortions and could add fuel to efforts seeking to ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

The Center for Medical Progress, which recorded and edited the video, says the footage proves that Planned Parenthood is breaking the law by selling fetal organs. But the video does not show Nucatola explicitly talking about selling organs. The Planned Parenthood official says the organization is “very, very sensitive” about being perceived as illegally profiting from organ sales and charges only for the cost, for instance, of shipping the tissue.

In a statement, a spokesman for Planned Parenthood said the video misrepresents the organization’s work. Planned Parenthood clinics, with a patient’s permission, may sometimes donate fetal tissue for use in stem cell research, said the spokesman, who added that the group’s affiliates, which operate independently, do not profit from these donations.

“At several of our health centers, we help patients who want to donate tissue for scientific research, and we do this just like every other high-quality health-care provider does — with full, appropriate consent from patients and under the highest ethical and legal standards,” spokesman Eric Ferrero said. “In some instances, actual costs, such as the cost to transport tissue to leading research centers, are reimbursed, which is standard across the medical field.”

He accused the Center for Medical Progress of mounting a misleading attack similar to those by other groups that have tried to mount undercover “stings” targeting Planned Parenthood.

From "WaPo Gets Planned Parenthood Abortion Organ Harvesting Story Wrong" by Mark Hemingway, The Weekly Standard 7/14/15

The Washington Post appears to be struggling a bit to cover today's blockbuster story about the undercover video of Planned Parenthood harvesting and selling organs from aborted fetuses. First, they changed the headline to something that's far more friendly to Planned Parenthood without noting the change.

Second, the story is substantively wrong. . . .

Finally, Nucatola herself says that the clinics hope to profit off of the sales, regardless of whether they are sensitive to appearing ghoulish for doing so. If you watch the video and/or read the transcript . . .

There can be no doubt, based on what Planned Parenthood's own representative said, that there is indeed a profit motive for abortion clinics to harvest organs. The Washington Post needs to meaningfully correct its story to reflect what Planned Parenthood's representative said on camera. Right now the story reads as if it is in denial about basic fact. And it is revealing that all of the ways in which the story is being misreported benefit Planned Parenthood.

From "Planned Parenthood Caught Selling Aborted Baby Body Parts in Undercover Video: 'We Get Heart, Lung, Liver'" by Ray Nothstine, Christian Post Contributor 7/14/15

The video, first unveiled at the Center for Medical Progress website, is part of a three-year investigation into what the Center for Medical Progress is calling "illegal" practices by Planned Parenthood. Once received by fetal tissue wholesalers, the body parts are shipped to universities, pharmaceutical companies, and government agencies.

"At the national office, we have a litigation and law department which just really doesn't want us to be the middle people for this issue right now, [Dr. Deborah Nacatola] declares. "But I will tell you that behind closed doors these conversations are happing with the affiliates."

According to the center there are state and federal laws against selling of aborted body parts. "The sale or purchase of human fetal tissue is a federal felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $500,000 (42 U.S.C. 289g-2)," declared a statement released by the Center for Medical Progress.

More investigative videos and documentation are set to be released by the Center for Medical Progress in the coming weeks.

From "House Republicans to Investigate Planned Parenthood Over Fetal Tissue" by Jackie Calmes and Nicholas St. Fleur, New York Times 7/15/15

Echoing the activists’ allegation, Speaker John A. Boehner and other top Republicans suggested that Planned Parenthood was selling fetal parts, which is illegal if done for profit. But Planned Parenthood said that while it charges for expenses such as processing and transporting, it makes no money from the fetal tissue donated by women who get abortions. The official shown in the video repeatedly says something similar to two activists posing as biotechnology representatives.

[Director of medical ethics at NYU Langone Medical Center, Dr. Arthur] Caplan said one practice that Dr. Nucatola described in the video was clearly unethical: manipulating the fetus in the womb and using surgical tools in ways meant to preserve certain organs for researchers.

“You cannot, must not, alter how or when you do an abortion simply to obtain tissues you want,” Dr. Caplan said. “Basically, the only concern is the health and safety of the mother.”

The allegations against Planned Parenthood should be investigated, he said. But, he added: “I’d like to see it done by independent experts, not by 15 presidential candidates in Congress. It would turn into a presidential-posturing festival.”

Abortionists Stymied by New Oklahoma & Kansas Laws

Whereas abortion advocates routinely challenge virtually every new state law limiting abortion, they appear starkly hesitant to sue to block first-of-a-kind second trimester pro-life laws enacted this month in Kansas and Oklahoma.  Apparently abortionists are reticent to defend, publicly in court, the gruesome D&E procedure wherein the unborn baby dies as he/she is literally torn limb-from-limb.

Oklahoma has become the second state to ban a common second-trimester abortion procedure that critics describe as dismembering a fetus.

Republican Gov. Mary Fallin signed the legislation Monday after it was overwhelmingly approved by the House and Senate.

The abortion measure prohibits doctors from using forceps, clamps, scissors or similar instruments on a live fetus to remove it from the womb in pieces. Such instruments are used in dilation and evacuation [D&E] procedures performed in the second trimester.

“With this law, Oklahoma has joined Kansas in an alarming trend toward substituting politicians’ agendas for the judgment and expertise of doctors, and then threatening those doctors with criminal charges if they disagree,” Nancy Northup, CEO of the Centre for Reproductive Rights, said in a statement.

Twenty two doctors sent a letter to Steve Brunk, the chairman of the House Federal and State Affairs committee warning the state government about the implications of the law.

From "Kansas Limits Abortion Method, Opening a New Line of Attack" by Erik Eckholm and Frances Robles, New York Times 4/7/15

In the procedure, the cervix is dilated with medication and the fetus is removed with forceps, often in parts. With a new legal approach intended to highlight what for many are uncomfortable aspects of abortions, groups like National Right to Life hope to expand their efforts.

“The Unborn Child Protection From Dismemberment Abortion Act is the first of what we hope will be many state laws banning dismemberment abortions,” said Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life. “This law has the power to transform the landscape of abortion policy in the United States.”

“The law raises very grave constitutional concerns,” said Janet Crepps, a lawyer with the Center for Reproductive Rights in New York.

It might also be possible, some experts said, for doctors to comply with the law by killing the fetus with an injection of the heart drug digoxin before starting a dilation and evacuation procedure. This is commonly done in very late abortions, after perhaps 18 weeks, but not earlier because, experts say, it seems unnecessary and adds uncertainties to the procedure.

From "Oklahoma Governor Signs Bill to Ban Dismemberment Abortions Tearing Babies Limb From Limb" by Steven Ertelt, LifeNews.com 4/14/15

[Gov.] Fallin issued a statement Monday afternoon: “HB 1721 is an important pro-life measure that outlaws gruesome mid-term abortions. I am proud to sign a law that will strengthen protections for unborn children in Oklahoma.”

Rep. Pam Peterson, R-Tulsa, and Sen. Josh Brecheen, R-Coalgate, sponsored the bill and thanked Governor Fallin.

Brecheen said: “I am more than pleased with the passage and signature on the bill. In the last 15 years, over 1,500 unborn children in Oklahoma were aborted through the dismemberment procedure.”

From "Oklahoma becomes second state to ban dismemberment abortions" Ben Johnson, LifeSiteNews.com 4/14/15

The bill, which takes effect on November 1, passed the state legislature by lopsided majorities, clearing the state House of Representatives 84-2 in February, and the state Senate last week by a 37-4 margin.

D&E abortion accounts for approximately 96 percent of all second trimester abortions, according to the National Abortion Federation – an estimated 100,000 abortions a year.

“So, yes, a dismemberment ban would stop many babies from being aborted,” pro-life newshound Jill Stanek wrote. But she adds that the educational value may be more important yet, since it was during the time that bills banning partial birth abortion were “introduced throughout the states and federally during the 1990s that public opinion began to change on abortion.”

Dr. Anthony Levatino, a former abortionist, graphically described D&E abortions on the floor of the House of Representatives in 2012, from removing each part of the body at the joint to finally decapitating the child and extracting the skull and body fragments. “Many times a little face may come out and stare back at you,” he said.

Today, Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback may have reduced abortions in the state by 8% as he signed into law the Unborn Child Protection from Dismemberment Abortion Act that outlaws second trimester abortions using dilation and extraction methods (D&E) that remove the “unborn child one piece at a time.” It's the first such law in the nation.

From "Kansas lawmakers pass nation’s 1st ban on abortion procedure" by John Hanna, Associated Press Political Writer 3/25/15

The bill redefines dilation and evacuation as “dismemberment abortion” and outlaws it except when necessary to save a woman’s life or prevent irreversible damage to her physical health. Doctors could not use forceps, clamps, scissors or similar instruments on a fetus to remove it from the womb in pieces.

Kansas already bans most abortions at or after the 22nd week of pregnancy. But other legislators said Wednesday they want to ban abortion as soon as a fetal heartbeat can be detected. One anti-abortion group, the Kansas Coalition for Life, is pushing a separate bill to ban suction abortions, which account for more than half of pregnancies terminated in Kansas.

Elsewhere, the Oklahoma House has approved a ban on the procedure and its Senate is expected to debate it next week. Similar bills have been introduced in Missouri and South Carolina.

. . . abortion-rights supporters remain unsure of the impact of the legislation, also under consideration in Missouri and Oklahoma. They could not say whether they would challenge it in court.

“We’ve never seen this language before,” said Elizabeth Nash, senior state issues associate for the Guttmacher Institute, which supports abortion rights. “It’s not medical language, so it’s a little bit difficult to figure out what the language would do.”

. . . the U.S. Supreme Court has signaled it might uphold the ban based on previous cases testing prohibitions of so-called partial-birth abortion, a procedure in which a fetus is partially removed intact from the woman’s body before being terminated.

Other methods for performing a second trimester abortion include inducing labor or using a technique where medicine is used to terminate the pregnancy.

In Missouri, [the dismemberment procedure] was used in 629 out of 5,624 abortions during 2012, state figures show.

From "Kansas Passes Pro-Life Bill to Ban Dismemberment Abortions Tearing Babies Limb From Limb" by Steven Ertelt, LifeNews.com 3/25/15

D&E dismemberment abortions are as brutal as the partial-birth abortion method, which is now illegal in the United States and which was upheld in the Supreme Court. But would such an abortion ban be constitutional given the Roe v. Wade decision? National Right to Life points to the high court’s ruling in the partial-birth abortion case as grounds for banning dismemberment abortions too.

In his dissent to the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2000 Stenberg v. Carhart decision, Justice Kennedy observed that in D&E dismemberment abortions, “The fetus, in many cases, dies just as a human adult or child would: It bleeds to death as it is torn limb from limb. The fetus can be alive at the beginning of the dismemberment process and can survive for a time while its limbs are being torn off.” Justice Kennedy added in the Court’s 2007 opinion, Gonzales v. Carhart, which upheld the ban on partial-birth abortion, that D&E abortions are “laden with the power to devalue human life…”

“When abortion textbooks describe in cold, explicit detail exactly how to kill a human being by ripping off arms and legs piece by piece, civilized members of society have no choice but to stand up and demand a change,” added [National Right to Life Director of State Legislation Mary] Spaulding Balch. “When you think it can’t be uglier, the abortion industry continues to shock with violent methods of abortion.”

New Yorkers Could Become Extinct due to Abortions

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has announced a plan to increase abortion in New York state, already the abortion capital of America.  In New York City, the majority of black children never make it out of the womb alive and nearly half of all pregnancies end in abortion.
“If Cuomo’s legislation succeeds, New York will be sanctioning unrestricted, virtually unregulated, and taxpayer-funded abortion-on-demand, making it the most radically pro-abortion state in the nation.”
-- Dr. Charmaine Yoest, Americans United for Life
For background, read Black Genocide in New York City (nearly 2 of 3 killed in womb) and also read New York City Liberals Choose Abortion NOT Procreation

-- From "Cuomo to push his abortion proposal amid obstacles" by The Associated Press 6/3/13

Cuomo drew swift opposition in January after he issued his rousing, repeated battle cry of: "Because it's her body, it's her choice!" in his State of the State address that ignited supporters seeking expansion of abortion rights. But Cuomo has framed his proposal as simply protecting the current rights under the Roe v. Wade court decision in 1973, which is widely supported in public opinion polls and in the Senate and Assembly.

"The women's equality bill language has been crafted in a way that creates a real litmus test on Roe v. Wade for members of both parties, making it impossible to vote against for anyone who wants to say they support a woman's right to choose," said Cuomo spokesman Matt Wing.

New York state law enacted three years before Roe v. Wade allows late-term abortions after 24 weeks only when a woman's life is danger. The 1973 federal law allows late-term abortions if a woman's health is danger — a lower hurdle.

Supporters of Cuomo's proposal also see a need to protect women in the event Roe v. Wade is struck down by a more conservative U.S. Supreme Court.

From "Cuomo Women’s Rights Plan May Hinge on Abortion Proposal" by Jesse McKinley, New York Times 6/5/13

The governor has made the proposal a central part of his plan to reclaim New York’s progressive mantle . . .

In the Assembly, where Democrats have a big majority, the abortion measure is likely to pass. But in the Senate, where Democrats hold a narrow numerical majority but do not have a functional majority, even if the measure came to the floor for a vote, it is not clear what would happen; most but not all Senate Democrats support abortion rights, and most but not all Senate Republicans oppose abortion.

Senator Jeffrey D. Klein, a Bronx Democrat who leads the four-member Independent Democratic Conference that shares control of the Senate, said he supported an even broader plan for women’s rights than the governor’s 10-point act, but also hoped “that abortion does not become a political football used to divide legislators.”

From "Poll: Two-thirds support Cuomo’s abortion plan" by Jimmy Vielkind, Capitol bureau, Times Union (Albany, NY) 6/6/13

A poll released this morning by Quinnipiac University finds two-thirds of New Yorkers surveyed back Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s proposal to create an affirmative right to an abortion and codify in state law federal court rulings that allow women to have a late-term abortion for health reasons.

Quinnipiac broke down its response to the Cuomo-proposal question by age, race, gender and party affiliation. Republicans were split, with 46 percent of those surveyed indicating support compared to 45 percent who were opposed and 9 percent who were unsure. Support among men and women was roughly the same — within the poll’s three percent margin of error. The poll found 58 percent of self-identified Catholics supported the proposal, compared to 32 percent who said they oppose it.

Different polls, including one commissioned by the pro-life Chiaroscuro Foundation, have phrased questions differently and found less support for abortion.

From "Cuomo’s Bill for Late-Term Abortions Would Protect Kermit Gosnells" by Steven Ertelt, LifeNews.com 6/4/13

“The technical impact of Gov. Cuomo’s efforts would be to block commonsense regulations of abortion—an often dangerous medical procedure, especially later in pregnancy,” said [AUL's Charmaine] Yoest. “He essentially creates a ‘Back-Alley Abortionists Empowerment Act’ that will remove the few legal protections in place in New York and sanction an environment where more women will be victimized and hurt by an unregulated and unrestrained abortion industry.”

. . . abortion advocates have argued that New York needs Governor Cuomo’s legislation to ensure that abortion is permitted and protected in the state should Roe v. Wade be overturned or further undermined. However, in the 1994 decision Hope v. Perales, the due process provision of the New York Constitution was interpreted as protecting a woman’s right to abortion in the state.

“In light of recent, tragic deaths at the hands of Big Abortion, advancing legislation that enables abortionists to harm more women and girls makes no legal sense at all,” said Dr. Yoest. “The headlines are full of news of women’s health being neglected in abortion clinics. Governor Cuomo should not champion a bill that would unleash such victimization on New York women.”

The Reproductive Health Act would . . . Allow non-physicians to perform abortions; Prevent any limitation on use of taxpayer funds to curtail New York’s Medicaid policy of paying for abortion-on-demand through all nine months of pregnancy . . .

From "Statement of the Bishops of New York State on Abortion Bill" by Timothy Cardinal Dolan and the Bishops of New York State 6/4/13

We are profoundly distressed by the introduction of a bill in New York State today that would ease restrictions in state law on late-term abortion and runs the serious risk of broadly expanding abortion access at all stages of gestation. This legislation would add a broad and undefined “health” exception for late-term abortion and would repeal the portion of the penal law that governs abortion policy, opening the door for non-doctors to perform abortions and potentially decriminalizing even forced or coerced abortions. In addition, we find the conscience protection in the bill to be vague and insufficient, and we are concerned about the religious liberty of our health facilities. While the bill’s proponents say it will simply “codify” federal law, it is selective in its codification. Nowhere does it address the portions of federal laws that limit abortion, such as the ban on taxpayer funding, the ban on partial birth abortion or protections for unborn victims of violence.

Fetuses Plugged Kermit The Abortionist's Toilet

While President Obama was in Boston speaking of Americans choosing life over those “who would visit death upon innocents” and saying that “we come together to celebrate life,” witnesses testified at the murder trial of Kermit Gosnell of live babies in his abortion clinic toilet being killed.  Although Barack Obama has often spoke in support of late-term abortionists like Gosnell, this week he said “Well, I’m familiar with it. In the interview, he noted that he was “familiar” with the trial of Gosnell, which has sparked outrage from some on both sides of the political spectrum, as many on the right — and some on the left — have charged that the mainstream media has not sufficiently covered the case, which involves gruesome allegations including of murder. Prosecutors chose 28-year-old Kareema Cross as their final witness before resting their case against Dr. Kermit Gosnell. Cross said she saw more than 10 babies breathe, with their chests moving up and down.

"I thought they were breathing," Cross testified. "He would say they're not really breathing."

Cross also described seeing three babies move, one after being born in a toilet, and heard a fourth give a "soft whine." Gosnell explained the movements as a last reflex amid the death process, she said.

She said Gosnell and others snipped the backs of the babies' necks after they were born "to ensure fetal demise." And she described the clinic as filthy and the equipment as outdated.

Adrienne Moton, an employee at the clinic, then took the baby [from the toilet] and snipped the back of its neck while the mother was still in the room.

. . . [Another] baby was born alive, [while the mother, Shayquana] Abrams was sleeping.  Cross said Dr. Gosnell took the baby boy, which she described as 12 to 18 inches long, and put him inside a plastic container the size of a shoebox.

“The baby was still breathing,” she said. “He didn’t cut the neck right there.”

The baby was too big for the plastic container, with his arms and legs hanging over the sides.

“The Doctor cut the back of the baby’s neck but didn’t do suction—normally Dr. Gosnell would do suction … to suck the brains out,” Cross said.

“I called people over to come see it [the baby] and we took pictures,” she said.

The baby boy had curled himself into the fetal position and laid on his side in the box.  An image of the baby taken by Cross was shown to the court, showing him laying lifeless on his side.

If “a baby was about to come out, I would take the woman to the bathroom, they would sit on the toilet and basically the baby would fall out and it would be in the toilet and I would be rubbing her back and trying to calm her down for two, three, four hours until Dr. Gosnell comes,” [clinic worker Latosha] Lewis told the grand jury.

Gosnell preferred to have the babies expel “because it made his job easier,” reads the [grand jury] report, which adds, “If fetuses had not precipitated, Gosnell would often have his staff physically push them out of their mothers by pressing in the mother’s abdomens.”

The report continues: “James Johnson, who supposedly cleaned the clinic and bagged its infectious waste, confirmed Lewis’s account. He testified that sometimes patients ‘miscarried or whatever it was’ into the toilet and clogged it.”

“He described how he had to lift the toilet so that someone else – he said it was too disgusting for him – could get the fetuses out of the pipes,” reads the grand jury report.

-- From "Abortion doctor on trial, but media not interested; pro-lifers see bias in Philadelphia case" by Valerie Richardson, The Washington Times 4/8/13

Dr. Kermit Gosnell was an abortionist, meaning that any coverage of the trial risks painting the pro-choice movement in an unflattering light. In a statement issued last week, 20 conservative leaders called for an end to what they described as a “media blackout” and “censoring” of the trial for political reasons.

[The Media Research Center] reports that there has been no network coverage on ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, NPR or PBS, and just one brief mention on CNN.

Not every murder trial receives prominent national coverage, but the Gosnell case would seem to contain all the ingredients of must-see television: a formerly respected community leader accused of unspeakable acts; the death of a young immigrant woman; a parade of former employees offering graphic testimony on the gruesome deaths of more than 100 just-born infants; and even the implication by the doctor’s lawyers that the charges have been motivated by racism. Dr. Gosnell is black and his clinic was in a mostly minority neighborhood.

From "Media Watchdogs Accuse Networks of Ignoring 'House of Horrors' Murder Trial" by Melissa Barnhart, CP Contributor 4/9/13

Conservative media watchdog groups are criticizing mainstream media networks and cable news channels for ignoring the murder trial of Kermit Gosnell, a late-term abortion provider who is accused of killing seven babies who were born alive and one patient who died from an overdose of Demerol that was administered by the clinic's unlicensed staff.

District Attorney R. Seth Williams laid out the case against Gosnell, his wife, Pearl, and eight other employees, including one 15-year-old, in a grand jury report last year, which reveals that Gosnell profited $10,000 to $15,000 a day at his late-term abortion clinic — not including the $200,000 he made from writing 2,300 illegal prescriptions for OxyContin and other addictive drugs.

The criminal case against Gosnell began on March 18 and is expected to continue for four to eight more weeks. If jurors convict Gosnell, he could face the death penalty . . .

The fourth week of testimony in Dr, Kermit Gosnell's "House of Horrors" trial began with another former employee testifying about what she saw and what she did while she worked at the Women's Medical Society.

[Sherry] West testified that once during an abortion procedure, she was very disturbed when a baby made a screeching noise. She said it was not fully-developed and "it sounded like a little alien. It really freaked me out," West told the courtroom.

West, who has pleaded guilty to 3rd degree murder and conspiracy, said tearfully that she is not guilty of her crimes and that she felt loyal to Gosnell.

From "Staffer recalls horrors at Pennsylvania abortion clinic" by Sean O’Sullivan, The (Wilmington, Del.) News Journal 4/9/13

Dr. Kermit Gosnell, owner of the Women's Medical Society clinic in West Philadelphia, taught her how to flip a baby's body over and do the procedure, said Lynda Williams, 44, of Wilmington, Del. But one time when she followed his orders after a baby was delivered in a toilet at the clinic, she saw the newborn move.

"It jumped, the arm," she said, showing the Philadelphia Common Pleas Court jury by raising her arm.

Williams told investigators she only snipped a neck the one time "because it gave me the creeps."

Williams said she asked Gosnell about the movement. Gosnell told her it was an "involuntary response" and a "last breath" because the fetus was "already dead" from drugs that had been administered earlier.

From "Reality Reverses Abortion’s Cultural Momentum" by David French, National Review Online 4/9/13

Amidst this month’s arguments that cultural changes are “inevitable” and irresistible, the abortion industry’s constant setbacks — both in public opinion and in legislatures across the country — must frustrate and puzzle the sexual revolutionaries. As the saying goes, reality always gets a vote, and the reality of abortion is unspeakably brutal. The abortion industry thrives only by shielding the public from as much of that brutality as possible. Abortion advocates can scream “Todd Akin” all they want, but Todd Akin never killed a screaming, crying child. Kermit Gosnell did.

. . . The abortion industry, born in racism and eugenics, thrives through diversion and deception. By contrast, an effective short tactical mission statement for the pro-life community would be simply this: Tell the truth — as often as you can, to as many audiences as you can.

Woman Dies from Abortion in Maryland, Media Silent

Just weeks after the mainstream media glorified the work of late-term abortionists, the work of LeRoy Carhart, one of their heroes of partial-birth abortion, killed 29-year-old Jennifer McKenna Morbelli who was 33 weeks pregnant.  An investigation has begun after she died Thursday in a local emergency room and Carhart was nowhere to be found.

As of the time of the initial posting, not a single mainstream media article had appeared concerning the death.

UPDATE 2/11/13: Washington Post finally covers the story by slamming pro-lifers for alarming the public just because a woman happened to "visit" an abortion clinic days before her death.

Premiering today at the Sundance Film Festival as part of the U.S. documentary competition, “After Tiller” is an intimate and heartfelt look at the four doctors performing third-trimester abortions in the United States, doing so even after the 2009 assassination of such a physician, Dr. George Tiller. . . .

“What’s interesting is that the four doctors really are proud of what they do,” said [film director Martha] Shane during a phone interview from Park City on Thursday morning. “They don’t feel they are working in the shadows. They’re brave enough to let the world know they do third-trimester abortions, they are public about it. I think part of the reason they agreed to participate in this film was actually to show that they are proud of the work that they do, it helps women and alleviates suffering.”

. . . the doctors see their work as important and worth continuing. As to whether the protests against what he does ever gave him doubts regarding his work, Dr. LeRoy Carhart said, “I never even give it a second thought.”

From "Sundance Film Festival 'HERO' Leroy Carhart Kills Young Woman During 3rd Trimester Abortion in Germantown, MD" posted at Christian Newswire 2/8/13

A 29 year-old woman was pronounced dead at a local hospital in Germantown, MD on Thursday, February 7th, as a direct result of complications experienced during a 3rd trimester abortion by LeRoy Carhart -- who was hailed as a "hero" in the film "After Tiller" at the recent Sundance Film Festival.

[The abortion procedure began on Sunday, then on] Thursday morning around 5am, the young woman was short of breath and in intense pain. When she and her family tried to contact LeRoy Carhart for assistance and follow-up care, he could not be reached. The young woman was transported to a local hospital Emergency Room by private vehicle.

The Maryland Medical Examiner spent a significant amount of time reviewing the case and the records at the hospital on Thursday, and determined the case needed further investigation due to the unusual circumstances of her death.

From "Woman Dies After Botched 33-Week Abortion Takes Her Life" by Steven Ertelt, LifeNews.com 2/8/13

According to information the pro-life group Operation Rescue released to LifeNews today, the unnamed woman went to the abortion facility for a third trimester abortion from out-of-state and arrived at Germantown Reproductive Health Center on Sunday to start the abortion process. Local pro-life advocates protesting outside saw her every day until yesterday, and described her as appearing “pale and weak.”

Early Thursday morning . . . The woman was taken by her family from her hotel to a nearby hospital emergency room at approximately 5:00 a.m. Efforts by hospital staff to contact Carhart or get informational assistance from the abortion clinic were unsuccessful.

Operation Rescue says the abortion patient suffered massive internal bleeding into her abdominal cavity. She slipped into a Code Blue condition approximately six times before finally succumbing to her injuries at around 9:30 a.m. The case has been placed with the Medical Examiner for further investigation.

Michigan to Ban Partial-birth Abortion

The Michigan state House and Senate have passed bills to ban partial-birth abortion, except to save the mother's life, and the governor is expected to sign such a bill. In 2007, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld such a ban at the federal level.

-- From "Michigan lawmakers advance abortion procedure ban" by The Associated Press 9/21/11

A proposal to put the ban in state law passed the Senate 29-8 Wednesday. A similar but separate bill passed the House 75-33. Lawmakers must pass the same bills before they can be sent to Republican Gov. Rick Snyder.

There's a similar federal ban on the procedure. Critics of the Michigan plan say that makes the state proposal redundant. Supporters say a state ban would make it easier to prosecute cases in Michigan.

Michigan lawmakers have tried to enact a state-level ban multiple times without success because of vetoes from then-Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm and court rulings.

From "Michigan Senate passes abortion bill" by Karen Bouffard, The Detroit News Lansing Bureau 9/21/11

Most Democrats opposed the ban saying it is not necessary since the federal government banned the practice in 2003. Democratic Sens. Tupac Hunter of Detroit, Steve Bieda of Warren and John Gleason of Flushing broke with their caucus to support the ban.

Opponents unsuccessfully proposed amendments to provide exceptions in the case of rape, or possible damage to a woman's health.

The legislation bans an abortion in which a fetus is partially born, and then killed before completely emerging from the womb. The practice would become a felony punishable by up to two years in jail and a $50,000 fine.

Senate Republicans said this legislation will stand because it closely mirrors language upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2007.

Senate Bill 160 passed the Senate 29-8 and House Bill 4109 passed the House 75-33. They now go to Republican Rick Snyder who plans to sign them into law.

[State Sen. Goeff Hansen, R-Hart] said the state law is needed even though Congress banned the practice, because it “makes it easier to enforce the ban in Michigan.”

Those representing Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union voiced their opposition to a ban on partial birth abortion during the committee hearing.

Pro-choice Americans Disagree with Abortionists: Poll

A new Gallup poll shows that a strong majority of Americans who consider themselves pro-choice align themselves with pro-lifers on many restrictions on abortion, while leading pro-abortion advocacy organizations and abortionists claim that pro-choice Americans oppose all such restrictions.

Self-described "pro-choice" and "pro-life" Americans agree about nine major areas of abortion policy, while disagreeing on eight others. Among the areas of consensus, in which a majority of both groups hold the same opinion, especially large percentages are in favor of requiring informed consent for women (86% of pro-choice adults and 87% who are pro-life) and making abortion illegal in the third trimester (79% and 94%).

. . . Both groups favor banning "partial-birth abortions," and requiring parental consent for minors. Additionally, a slim majority of pro-choice Americans (52%) agree with 90% of pro-life Americans that abortion should be illegal in the second trimester.

A Gallup poll says 70 percent of U.S. citizens favor requiring parental consent for a minor seeking an abortion.

The poll, released Monday, showed the same percentage support establishment of a 24-hour waiting period for a woman seeking an abortion. Gallup said nearly two-thirds of those polled favor making a procedure known as "partial birth abortion" illegal. The poll also said 57 percent of Americans oppose laws prohibiting health clinics that perform abortions from receiving federal funding.

Opponents of abortion rights have in recent years shifted their efforts from the federal to the state level and have unveiled a wide range of measures limiting abortions.

Gallup also found that while opinions on abortion tend to be similar between men and women, the issue breaks down strongly along partisan lines. For instance, two thirds of Republicans back the ultrasound requirements, but only about half of Democrats.

The survey comes against the background of a record-setting pace of abortion legislation at the state level.

Murders by Abortionist are Conservatives' Fault, Says Media

Time Magazine published two articles, each presenting an excuse for the infanticide by the abortionist now charged with multiple counts of murder: The reason for the horrific crimes, according to Time, is either 1) poverty or 2) the ever-increasing restrictions on abortions beyond the first trimester.

“As a rule, any law restricting abortion is almost automatically going to make abortion more dangerous for women.”

For background, read Kermit the Abortionist Loses 'License to Kill'

-- From "Why the Pa. Abortion Doc's Case Is About Poverty, Not Roe v. Wade" by Belinda Luscombe, Time Magazine 1/20/11

Depending on where people fall in the reproductive rights vs. fetal rights debate, their views on abortion doctors are different. To some, these doctors are heroic figures, helping needy women in the face of considerable public opprobrium, if not death threats. To others, they're taking away the lives of the yet-to-be-born. But if the grand-jury report released Wednesday by the Philadelphia district attorney is to be believed, abortion provider Dr. Kermit Gosnell would be hard for anyone to defend.

. . . the sad truth is that Gosnell's long-running practice probably has much more to do with poverty than with Roe v. Wade.

[Gosnell] is alleged to have performed illegal late-term abortions (in Pennsylvania, the law prohibits abortion later than 24 weeks). These procedures are difficult, so Gosnell's method, according to the charges, was to induce labor, deliver a live baby then kill it — or "ensure fetal demise," as Gosnell referred to it. He did this, the grand-jury report says, by "sticking scissors into the back of the baby's neck and cutting the spinal cord."

[Gosnell] was a health-care provider of last resort. Many of the women who came were too young, or too far along in their pregnancies to be treated by the mainstream medical establishment. They came because they were out of options or, at least, they believed they were.

Many of Gosnell's clients might have been afraid to report him because it would have meant admitting an illegal act on their part.

From "Philly Abortion Horrors: What Matters is How and Not When an Abortion is Done, Says Expert" by Bonnie Rochman, Time Magazine 1/21/11

. . . Pennsylvania, like most states, [restrict when abortions can be performed]; it bans them after 24 weeks.

For sure, late abortions have the potential to be more dangerous than first-trimester abortions. The fetus is larger, the uterus is larger, and there is a greater chance of serious complications. But early abortions can be deadly too [sic] if they're not done properly.

When abortion is restricted . . . only the well-off have access to the procedure.

From "The Philadelphia Horror: How mass murder gets a pass" by Michelle Malkin, Creators Syndicate 1/21/11

The 281-page grand jury report (see full embedded document below) released Wednesday provides a bone-chilling account of how Gosnell’s “Women’s Medical Society” systematically preyed on poor, minority pregnant women and their live, viable babies. The report’s introduction lays out the criminal enterprise that claimed the lives of untold numbers of babies — and mothers:
“This case is about a doctor who killed babies and endangered women. What we mean is that he regularly and illegally delivered live, viable, babies in the third trimester of pregnancy – and then murdered these newborns by severing their spinal cords with scissors. The medical practice by which he carried out this business was a filthy fraud in which he overdosed his patients with dangerous drugs, spread venereal disease among them with infected instruments, perforated their wombs and bowels – and, on at least two occasions, caused their deaths. Over the years, many people came to know that something was going on here. But no one put a stop to it.”
Deadly indifference to protecting life isn’t tangential to the abortion industry’s existence – it’s at the core of it. The Philadelphia Horror is no anomaly. It’s the logical, blood-curdling consequence of an evil, eugenics-rooted enterprise wrapped in feminist clothing.

Abortionists 'On the Ropes' in Courts

The mainstream media paints a bleak picture for abortion proponents as states across America increasingly enact abortion restrictions upheld by the Supreme Court.

-- From "Tests of 'Roe' more frequent since justices upheld late-term abortion ban in '07" by Robert Barnes, Washington Post Staff Writer 12/28/10

The importance of [the Nebraska "fetal pain" restriction] is likely to be felt far beyond Nebraska. Abortion opponents call it model legislation for other states and say it could provide a direct challenge to Supreme Court precedents that restrict government's ability to prohibit abortion before a fetus can survive outside the womb.

Critics of abortion hail the law as the most prominent and promising outcome of the Supreme Court's 2007 decision [banning late-term abortion].

The 5 to 4 decision in Gonzales v. Carhart turned away [abortionist LeRoy] Carhart's challenge to the federal ban on "partial birth" abortion and appeared to mark a significant change in the high court's balancing of a woman's right with the government's interest.

"I believe the decision was like planting a bunch of seeds, and we're just starting to see the shoots popping out of the ground," said Roger Evans, who is in charge of litigation for Planned Parenthood of America.

The Center for Reproductive Rights concluded that in 2010, state legislatures "considered and enacted some of the most extreme restrictions on abortion in recent memory, as well as passing laws creating dozens of other significant new hurdles."

From "Pro-Lifers Look to Spread Fetal Pain Law" by Timberly Ross, Associated Press 12/9/10

Abortion rights foes emboldened by a new Nebraska law that restricts late-term procedures based on the disputed notion that fetuses can feel pain after 20 weeks are pushing for similar legislation in other states, particularly those where Republicans won big in November.

. . . Indiana, Iowa and Kentucky lawmakers have already started drafting bills similar to Nebraska's law, and abortion opponents are pushing lawmakers in Kansas, Maryland and Oklahoma to do the same.

Dr. LeRoy Carhart, one of the nation's few late-term abortion providers who runs a clinic near Omaha, and his backer, the New York City-based Center for Reproductive Rights, have threatened to challenge the Nebraska law in court. Dionne Scott, a spokeswoman for the center, said it would file a challenge "when the circumstances are appropriate." But losing such a challenge would risk having the court throw away the viability standard in favor of a pain standard, which could be further lowered should it be proven fetuses feel can feel pain earlier than 20 weeks.

Abortion opponents in Kansas and Oklahoma say they're making a similar push for fetal pain legislation, but no lawmakers have publically announced their support.

From "Anti-abortion push gains momentum" by Sarah Kliff, Politico 12/14/10

After serving four years in a Democratic-controlled Legislature, Iowa state GOP Rep. Matt Windschitl had become accustomed to his anti-abortion legislation languishing in committee.

But that all changed in November, when the Iowa House and the governor’s seat both flipped Republican. The Senate remains in Democratic control but with significantly tighter margins, all of which has Windschitl thinking that his bill banning late-term abortion, which he plans to introduce next year, has a fighting chance at passing.

Windschitl isn’t the only one sensing a sea change: Massive gains in statehouses and a promising new rhetorical strategy have anti-abortion advocates predicting a banner year — and abortion rights supporters bracing for the challenge.

They have reason to worry: Anti-abortion advocates are planning an aggressive strategy at both the state and the federal level. At a National Right to Life Committee state strategy conference last week — hastily convened after activists realized the extent of their legislative gains — the anti-abortion lobby announced it would focus on three model laws that have already seen some success on the ground.
