Fed. Disease Study Shows Sex Education Has Failed

After decades of public schools teaching children how to have "safe sex," the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is warning of the continued escalation of the epidemic of sexually transmitted infections (STIs); young people account for half of all new infections.

Left untreated, STIs can wreck havoc on the reproductive organs, causing severe medical problems and affecting the ability to have children later in life, according to Dr. Lindsey Satterwhite, epidemiologist in the CDC’s Division of STD Prevention.

There are more than 110 million STIs nationwide overall among men and women, the CDC says. The majority of those are HPV infections, estimated at 79.1 million.

In addition, HPV is particularly costly due to the expense of treating HPV-related cancers. However, the annual cost of curable STIs is also significant ($742 million). Among these, chlamydia is most common and therefore the most costly."

"Individuals need to talk openly to their sexual partners, and to their doctors about getting tested and they need to reduce their individual risk. They need to vaccinate. They need to consider ways to reduce their risk like practicing abstinence, using condoms correctly and consistently every time, and being in a mutually monogamous relationship."

The fact sheet from the study (which can be found here) shed light on which populations were the most likely to obtain STIs. People 15 to 24 years old only constitute one quarter of Americans and they reportly have 50 percent of all new infections, a significantly disproportionate amount.

The CDC concluded the report with a few points and suggestions:

All adults and adolescents should be tested at least once for HIV.

Annual chlamydia screening for all sexually active women age 25 and under, as well as older women with risk factors such as new or multiple sex partners.

Screening at least once a year for syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhea, and HIV for all sexually active gay men, bisexual men, and other men who have sex with men (MSM). MSM who have multiple or anonymous partners should be screened more frequently for STIs (e.g., at 3 to 6 month intervals. In addition, MSM who have sex in conjunction with illicit drug use (particularly methamphetamine use) or whose sex partners participate in these activities should be screened more frequently.

The report from the CDC describes how Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the bacteria that causes the sexually transmitted infection, or STI, gonorrhea, has become resistant to many forms of antibiotics since the 1930s.  The bug continues to trouble disease experts as it morphs into strains that scientists call “multidrug-resistant gonorrhea.”

Lab studies show that cephalsporins, the current class of antibiotics used to treat gonorrhea, are becoming less effective at treating the disease. If this trend continues, cephalosporin-resistant gonorrhea could emerge in the U.S., like it has in Japan, France, and Spain. . . .

Gonorrhea is the second most commonly reported infectious disease in the United States. In 2011, more than 300,000 cases of gonorrhea were reported.

In 2009, Card joined the board of the anti-gay National Organization for Marriage, a nonprofit "with a mission to protect marriage and the faith communities that sustain it." Card's status in the group is unclear today.

DC Comics has long been inclusive of gay characters, featuring one of the first male kisses in 1988, according to the Associated Press.

Pres. Obama Shifts Defense Funds to Homosexuals

In a statement, outgoing Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said the military would no longer provide some benefits to heterosexual couples while denying them to same-sex partners in the military.

"Seventeen months ago, the United States military ended the policy of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell,'" Panetta said today in a statement announcing the decision. "At the time of repeal, I committed to reviewing benefits that had not previously been available to same-sex partners based on existing law and policy. It is a matter of fundamental equity that we provide similar benefits to all of those men and women in uniform who serve their country."

Full benefits would require the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act, a 1996 law that defined marriage as the union of a man and a woman. The Pentagon lifted the ban on openly gay men and lesbians serving in the armed forces, but it cannot recognize their marriages, even if they are legal in some states, because military personnel are federal employees covered by the marriage law.

The Supreme Court is expected to rule this summer on whether the law is constitutional.

“Additional benefits, such as health care and housing allowances, are by statute currently only available to spouses and therefore cannot be made available to same-sex domestic partners of service members under current law,” Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta wrote in a letter released by the Pentagon.

“In the event that the Defense of Marriage Act is no longer applicable to the Department of Defense, it will be the policy of the department to construe the words ‘spouse’ and ‘marriage’ without regard to sexual orientation,” he added, “and married couples, irrespective of sexual orientation, and their dependents will be granted full military benefits.”

News last week about the impending announcement generated supportive statements from Capitol Hill and did not appear to draw significant criticism from groups that have in the past raised concerns about allowing openly gay people to serve in the armed forces.

But Democrats struck down Hill’s proposal calling it unjust and saying it would create the right to discriminate. They also defeated other GOP amendments to weaken the bill. Most Republicans object to civil unions saying they are too similar to marriage and would undermine the traditional family unit.

Woman Dies from Abortion in Maryland, Media Silent

Just weeks after the mainstream media glorified the work of late-term abortionists, the work of LeRoy Carhart, one of their heroes of partial-birth abortion, killed 29-year-old Jennifer McKenna Morbelli who was 33 weeks pregnant.  An investigation has begun after she died Thursday in a local emergency room and Carhart was nowhere to be found.

As of the time of the initial posting, not a single mainstream media article had appeared concerning the death.

A 29 year-old woman was pronounced dead at a local hospital in Germantown, MD on Thursday, February 7th, as a direct result of complications experienced during a 3rd trimester abortion by LeRoy Carhart -- who was hailed as a "hero" in the film "After Tiller" at the recent Sundance Film Festival.

[The abortion procedure began on Sunday, then on] Thursday morning around 5am, the young woman was short of breath and in intense pain. When she and her family tried to contact LeRoy Carhart for assistance and follow-up care, he could not be reached. The young woman was transported to a local hospital Emergency Room by private vehicle.

The Maryland Medical Examiner spent a significant amount of time reviewing the case and the records at the hospital on Thursday, and determined the case needed further investigation due to the unusual circumstances of her death.

According to information the pro-life group Operation Rescue released to LifeNews today, the unnamed woman went to the abortion facility for a third trimester abortion from out-of-state and arrived at Germantown Reproductive Health Center on Sunday to start the abortion process. Local pro-life advocates protesting outside saw her every day until yesterday, and described her as appearing “pale and weak.”

Early Thursday morning . . . The woman was taken by her family from her hotel to a nearby hospital emergency room at approximately 5:00 a.m. Efforts by hospital staff to contact Carhart or get informational assistance from the abortion clinic were unsuccessful.

Operation Rescue says the abortion patient suffered massive internal bleeding into her abdominal cavity. She slipped into a Code Blue condition approximately six times before finally succumbing to her injuries at around 9:30 a.m. The case has been placed with the Medical Examiner for further investigation.

The [U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, USCCB] said they would continue fighting the federal mandate in court.

The [Obama] administration said the proposal, issued last Friday, would guarantee free employee coverage of birth control “while respecting religious concerns” of organizations that objected to paying or providing for it.

The bishops said the proposal seemed to address part of their concern about the definition of religious employers who could be exempted from the requirement to offer contraceptive coverage at no charge to employees. But they said it did not go far enough and failed to answer many questions, like who would pay for birth control coverage provided to employees of certain nonprofit religious organizations.

The administration had no immediate reaction to the bishops’ statement, other than to say it was not a surprise.

In his column for the diocesan newspaper The Tablet, entitled “Deeper Into the Culture of Death,” Bishop DiMarzio [wrote] . . . “The so-called ‘pro-choice’ movement has its roots in the ideology of Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood, who understood her call to be one who would ‘assist the race toward the elimination of the unfit,’” states Bishop DiMarzio.  “Of course, a young Barack Obama was precisely the sort of unfit child that Sanger and her allies would want to eliminate.”

“Tragically, the President has not been an advocate for those young children faced with similarly difficult circumstances,” says Bp. DiMarzio. “He has chosen to use the bully pulpit not to call upon us all to be nobler and to embrace each child, regardless of origins and circumstances; rather, he has been a proponent of an expediency that is shameful and criminal in the eyes of Almighty God.”

The USCCB said the policy will require Catholic institutions to have a hand in healthcare coverage they find immoral.

The group was initially noncommittal last week after the Obama administration released new regulations on the contraception mandate and its "accommodations" for religious-affiliated institutions, such as Catholic hospitals and universities.

"It appears that the government would require all employees in our 'accommodated' ministries to have the illicit coverage — they may not opt out, nor even opt out for their children — under a separate policy," [president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Cardinal Timothy] Dolan said.

Although billed as another accommodation to religious groups that oppose contraception, the regulations released last Friday made only minor changes to the substance of the policy.

. . . Dolan criticized the administration’s “narrow” definition of a religious organization. He also objected to religious-affiliated institutions having to find an intermediary that would provide the contraceptive coverage — part of the compromise the administration had outlined. He also noted that the new White House policy did not address the objections of religious owners of for-profit businesses.

“In obedience to our Judeo-Christian heritage, we have consistently taught our people to live their lives during the week to reflect the same beliefs that they proclaim on the Sabbath,” Dolan said, referring to these business owners. “We cannot now abandon them to be forced to violate their morally well-informed consciences.”

The Obama administration said that religion-affiliated institutions — such as a Catholic school or Christian hospital — could kick the responsibility to cover contraceptives to a third-party administrator, who would find an insurance policy that would cover contraception. But it did not appease concerns from religious organizations that did not want their employment tied to birth control or drugs that they feel cause abortions — in any manner.

The Catholic Association, a group of Catholic laypersons dedicated to advancing the principles of the Catholic Church, issued a statement supporting the bishops' stand in defending the religious freedom of all Americans.

"The bishops have recognized in their statement that when the religious freedom of one is compromised, the religious freedom of everyone is compromised, whether they be their own affiliated institutions or non-Catholic institutions or for-profit employers," said the association. "We call on this administration to provide an acceptable exemption for people of faith, and to put an end to its anti-religious liberty policies.”

“. . . the bishops explained that the ‘HHS mandate creates still a third class, those with no conscience protection at all: individuals who, in their daily lives, strive constantly to act in accordance with their faith and moral values,” said Cardinal Dolan, citing the bishops' unanimous declaration. “This includes employers sponsoring and subsidizing the coverage, insurers writing it, and beneficiaries paying individual premiums for it. Friday's action confirms that HHS has no intention to provide any exemption or accommodation at all to this ‘third class.’”

Under the new [ObamaCare] proposal . . . an employer would qualify for the exemption if it fell under Internal Revenue Code, Section 6033(a)(3)(A)(i) or (iii), which “refers to churches, their integrated auxiliaries, and conventions or associations of churches, as well as to the exclusively religious activities of any religious order.”

Therefore, religious institutions that are not affiliated with a church – such as many Catholic health care, education and charity institutions – do not appear to be covered by the exemption. These groups still appear to be given “second-class status” that is not deemed worthy of a religious exemption, Cardinal Dolan said.

He also noted that the new proposals would appear to require all employees in the accommodated ministries to carry the contraceptive coverage under a separate policy, leaving them no option to opt out for themselves or their children.

The proposed revisions offer no protection to for-profit businesses owners who have religious or moral objections to the mandate. Nor do they cover non-profit groups that have no specific religious affiliation, such as many pro-life groups around the country.

“The rise of the tea party has surfaced a real desire on the part of a few to ramp up restrictions on women’s freedom and to do what I call ‘stuff the genie back in the bottle,’” Hogue said in the video.

Hogue called tea partiers “racist” and “dangerous” in her remarks at the June 2010 Campaign for America’s Future conference, where she spoke alongside Daily Kos founder Markos Moulitsas.

“They’re dangerous. There are some very dangerous elements, and when they get racist and when they spit on our congressmen and when they do things that are just completely outside the bounds of what we believe our democracy to be about, we have to call them on it,” Hogue said.

Oregon: Christian Baker Must Do Lesbian 'Wedding'

The Oregon Dept. of Justice is investigating Sweet Cakes by Melissa, a Christian-owned bakery in Gresham, OR, that chose not to sell a cake for a same-sex "wedding" ceremony.  State law requires every Christian business to accommodate deviant sexual behavior over their own conscience in any instance of conflict between the Gay Agenda and God's Word.

Once the public was made aware of the persecution by the state, the bakery gained customers.

[Aaron] Klein, who along with his wife owns the Gresham bakery Sweet Cakes by Melissa, is under investigation after a Portland woman filed a consumer complaint alleging the business refused to make a cake for her wedding to another woman.

[Laurel] Bowman wrote in her complaint that the couple initially chose to have their cake made by Sweet Cakes because they bought a wedding cake there for $250 years earlier without incident. But that cake wasn't for a same-sex marriage.

The state attorney general's office is investigating. If the agency finds cause -- it is awaiting Sweet Cakes' official account -- it has the option of filing a discrimination complaint with the state labor bureau.

The bakery was closed Monday, but supporters plan to show up at the shop Tuesday when it opens. In an email, the owner says the response to his decision has been "overwhelming."

The Oregon attorney general's office is investigating a complaint against the bakery because of a state law that declares it is a violation for a business to deny full and equal accommodations for customers based on race, religion, gender, sexual orientation and other factors.

Klein says the incident happened about three weeks ago: a woman and her mother walked into the bakery he owns with his wife Melissa and requested a wedding cake. Everything was as normal until he asked the bride and groom's names, and learned the groom was also a woman.

"I was very polite," Klein said. "I looked up and said, 'Unfortunately, I don't do same-sex marriage [cakes]."

"I paraphrased some scripture and I said, 'Leviticus 20:13 says that it's an abomination and that it's detestable,'" he said. "And she told me I was wrong and walked out the door."

Male Porn Users Likely to Favor 'Gay Marriage'

New studies show that men who consume more pornography are also more likely to favor same-sex "marriage" because seeing a variety of deviant heterosexual behavior also opens the mind to deviant homosexual behavior.  By its nature, pornography disconnects sex acts from procreation and the concept of monogamous marriage.

He added: "Since a portion of individuals' sexual attitudes come from the media they consume, it makes sense that pornography viewers would have more positive attitudes towards same-sex marriage."

Of note, the authors suggested that since lesbian porn "is quite popular among males," the change seen in the men toward same-sex marriage suggests "a change in males' attitude regarding male-male marriage."

[young] men who view pornographic material “every day or almost every day,” 54 percent “strongly agreed” that gay and lesbian marriage should be legal, compared with around 13 percent of those whose porn-use patterns were either monthly or less often than that. . . .

At least one other boy at the school is making the same claim.

"There were many children lying there and they watched these acts. In our business and in psychological terms, that's sexualizing a child at a young age," he said.

In a new book on demographics set to be published next week, Jonathan V. Last writes that pets now outnumber children 4 to 1 in America. The book is titled What to Expect When No One’s Expecting.

“In 1994 Americans spent $1.7 billion on pets; by 2008 that number had risen to $4.3 billion. By 2010, even in the face of a massive recession, it had climbed over $4.8 billion. The evidence suggests that pets are increasingly treated like actual family members: In 1998, the average dog-owning American household spent $383 on medical care for their dogs; by 2006, that figure had risen to $672” [writes Jonathan Last].

“Wealthy dog owners have successfully lobbied for changes in estate law allowing pets to legally receive inheritances and trust funds. A bill put forward in Congress recently called for a $3,500 tax break for pet-care expenses—which is more than families get for a child.”

“[E]ducated, middle-class people have all but stopped having babies,” he writes. “Pets have become fuzzy, low-maintenance replacements for children.”

For two generations we've been lectured about the dangers of overpopulation. But the conventional wisdom on this issue is wrong, twice. First, global population growth is slowing to a halt and will begin to shrink within 60 years. Second, as the work of economists Esther Boserups and Julian Simon demonstrated, growing populations lead to increased innovation and conservation. . . .

Low-fertility societies don't innovate because their incentives for consumption tilt overwhelmingly toward health care. They don't invest aggressively because, with the average age skewing higher, capital shifts to preserving and extending life and then begins drawing down. . . .

If our fertility rate were higher—say 2.5, or even 2.2—many of our problems would be a lot more manageable. But our fertility rate isn't going up any time soon. In fact, it's probably heading lower. Much lower.

There's a constellation of reasons for this decline: Middle-class wages began a long period of stagnation. College became a universal experience for most Americans, which not only pushed people into marrying later but made having children more expensive. Women began attending college in equal (and then greater) numbers than men. More important, women began branching out into careers beyond teaching and nursing. And the combination of the birth-control pill and the rise of cohabitation broke the iron triangle linking sex, marriage and childbearing.

By 1973, the U.S. was below the replacement rate, as was nearly every other Western country. [And not coincidentally, since 1973 a total of 55 million Americans were "terminated" in the womb.]

Immigration has helped make up for America's dropping birth rate.

When Medicare was established in 1965 and when Social Security was vastly expanded in 1972, America was accustomed to the high birthrates of the posWorld War II baby boom. It was widely assumed that the baby boom generation would soon produce a baby boom of its own.

Oops. The birthrate fell from the peak of 122.7 in 1957 to 68.8 in 1973 and hovered around that level until 2007. The baby boom, it turns out, was an exception to a general rule that people tend to have fewer babies as their societies become more affluent and urbanized.

Birthrates fell sharply during the Depression of the 1930s. They have fallen significantly since the housing collapse, from 69.3 in 2007 to 63.2 in 2011. The steepest decline in births since 2007 has been among Hispanic immigrants, who were also hit hard by housing foreclosures.

Low economic growth or even decline can shape expectations and become a self-fulfilling prophecy. "An economic recovery has begun," Obama said in his inaugural speech last month. The implication: This is all you're going to get.

A University of Michigan spokesperson released a statement saying that all registered student organizations must agree to “sign the university’s standard non-discrimination agreement” and “submit their constitution for review.”

In order for students to be InterVarsity leaders they must sign a statement of faith. But the university said that requirement violated their non-discrimination policy.

“I can’t imagine the Muslim Student Association saying you don’t have to be a Muslim to help lead our group,” [Greg Jao, InterVarsity’s national field director,] said.

The pressure on college ministries to abandon faith-based leadership requirements has increased since a 2010 Supreme Court decision.

In Christian Legal Society vs. Martinez, the court ruled that a public college may enforce an "all-comers" policy on a religious group without violating the First Amendment, as long as it applies the policy to all campus groups.

Greg Jao, national field director for InterVarsity wrote in Christianity Today last month that the organization has contested the policy on dozens of campuses in the last semester.

Speaking with the United Kingdom's Catholic Herald, San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone said the term gay marriage refers to a "natural impossibility" and should be rarely used.

Cordileone's comparison seems to imply that both same-sex marriage and breastfeeding by men are both impossible. However, same-sex marriage is legal in several states and while rare, men can lactate.

The Scientific American notes several scenarios that could and have caused male lactation, and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jared Diamond added that male milk production could be advantageous in a modern society.

Meanwhile, some transgender men have also been able to keep their female reproductive organs and breastfeed their children. . . .

. . . Archbishop Cordileone is best known as the chairman of the US bishops’ subcommittee for the promotion and defence of marriage. He was appointed to this position in 2011. Since then, he has earned the ire of many gay marriage campaigners and his appointment to San Francisco was met with sharp words from some outspoken progressive locals. From our point of view in Britain, we may think the gay marriage lobby is surrounding Archbishop Cordileone on all sides, but support for him often outnumbers the opposition. On his installation day, October 4 2012, there were reportedly a maximum number of three dozen protesters outside. But many more people came to show support, chief among them being members of the Neocatechumenal Way, who held banners proclaiming: “Teaching the Truth about the Family.”

He says: “Truth is clear. Wanting children to be connected to a mother and father discriminates against no one. Every child has a father and a mother, and either you support the only institution that connects a child with their father and mother or you don’t. Adoption, by a mother and father, mirrors the natural union of a mother and father and provides a balanced, happy alternative for when a child may not be reared by their biological parents.”

I [Mary O'Regan] admit that I didn’t step up to the plate when Channel 4 invited me on live television to debate gay marriage, because I didn’t want to become a hate figure. I feared my career would suffer and I wouldn’t be able to pay my rent. The archbishop sighs and responds: “You say that you can’t debate it without suffering for your beliefs, so who is being discriminated against? Who is being intolerant? It is the secular orthodoxy that allows no dissent and will punish those who do.”

When I concede that I feel like a coward for passing up the opportunity to argue the case for marriage on television, Archbishop Cordileone says: “It’s a lot easier for us priests to speak out. Fellow clergy are not going to marginalise us. And we’re not going to be passed up for a promotion or lose our jobs!”

While speaking out may be less daunting for priests, he encourages lay people to embrace the challenge . . . “Fighting for marriage is our way of loving God, and the struggle is the particular gift that God has given our generation. This is our particular trial, and by overcoming it we may achieve spiritual greatness. It will entail suffering if we are to oppose gay marriage, something which poses such destruction to the understanding of natural marriage, which is a child-oriented institution.”

It’s not that Archbishop Cordileone is so indifferent and hard that he does not feel the sting of slurs. Rather, he knows that winning the battle is more important, even if it will mean personal suffering. Courage is writ large on his determined face, and he is living up to the demands of his Italian surname, which means “heart of a lion”.

In response to the November 6 statewide referenda results in Washington State, Minnesota, Maryland, and Maine regarding marriage, Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of San Francisco, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' Subcommittee for the Promotion and Defense of Marriage, called for renewed efforts to strengthen and protect marriage and family life and expressed gratitude to marriage protection supporters.

"The meaning of marriage, though, cannot be redefined because it lies within our very nature. No matter what policy, law or judicial decision is put into place, marriage is the only institution that unites a man and a woman to each other and to any children born of their union. It is either this, or it is nothing at all. In view of the fact that every child has a mother and a father, our society either respects the basic right of every child to be raised by his or her mother and father together and so supports the true and unique meaning of marriage for the good of children, or it does not. In a society marked by increasing poverty and family fragmentation, marriage needs to be strengthened, promoted, and defended, not redefined. I hope and pray that political leaders, judges, and all people will seek to honor this foundational and common sense truth of marriage," the archbishop said.

"I extend heartfelt gratitude to all those who dedicated and sacrificed time, energy and resources to protect marriage," Archbishop Cordileone said. "I especially call on all people to pray and to build a renewed culture of marriage and the family. This is a fundamental task on which the future good and stability of our society, and particularly that of our children, rest."
