Georgia School: Learn Islam or Take Lower Grade

Parents of the Walton County School District in suburban Atlanta plan to flood the October School Board meeting to demand changes in school work that teaches five times more about Islam than Christianity and tests students on Islamic doctrine.  School officials defend the curriculum saying they've been teaching Islam in this manner since after the 9/11 terrorist attack.

Ryan Breece was able to opt out his sixth grader from the lesson but she took a lower grade because of it.

He has started a Facebook group to draw attention to the course which now has over 1,500 members.

“We need to see the assignments and we need to be able to opt out without any grade negativity on our children,” says Breece.

He plans to meet with school district officials this week and he says hundreds of concerned parents may turn out at the Walton County Board of Education meeting Oct. 10.

The state sets the goals and leaves it to communities to figure out how to reach them. School districts develop their own curriculum, though the state offers resources they can choose to use. In this case, one such resource seems to have provoked a backlash: a homework quiz that one of [parent Steven] Alsup’s daughters brought home from a freshman class at Walnut Grove High School a couple of weeks ago: “Allah is the (blank) worshiped by Jews & Christians,” the document said. The child filled in the blank with “same God.”

The [Georgia state education] fact sheet says Judaism, Christianity and Islam have the “same” deity with different names (Yaweh, Jehovah and Allah). The true-or-false quiz asks whether the three religions have the same God. The correct answer, it says: true.

“My daughter had to learn the Shahada and the Five Pillars of Islam, which is what you learn to convert,” parent Michelle King complained to Channel 2 Action News. She added that the school didn’t teach the Ten Commandments “or anything about God.”

Obama Invokes God: Gay Agenda Trumps Constitution

Finally, in a speech on the Lord's Day, President Obama came straight out and proclaimed what he's been concealing for so many years in the White House:  his agenda IS the Gay Agenda.
". . . we also have to say clearly that our religious freedom doesn’t grant us the freedom to deny our fellow [homosexual and transgender] Americans their constitutional rights. . . . we should support efforts to ban so-called ‘conversion therapy’ for minors. So, we've got to keep striving every day to treat each other the way I believe God sees us, as equal in His eyes."

Speaking at a Democratic Party fundraiser, Obama said it's important to recognize that some parts of the country remain uncomfortable with same-sex marriage and that it will take time for them to catch up to the majority of Americans who support such unions.

But while Americans hold dear the constitutional right to practice their religion free from government interference, he said that right can't be used to deny constitutional rights to others.

The president began by recalling for his supporters that "seven years ago, we came together not just to elect a president, but to reaffirm our faith in that most American of ideals: the notion that people, no matter where they come from ... or who they love can change this country."

He noted that everyone in the U.S., regardless of sexual orientation, is protected by a federal hate crimes law he signed in his first year as president, and that federal contractors are barred from terminating employees for being gay.

President Obama says he respects religious liberty, but it cannot be used to deny marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples who are entitled to them.

In his remarks Sunday to donors, Obama said gay marriage supporters should understand that the change "has been a whirlwind" for many Americans, and that there remains some "unease." . . .

"Even as we are respectful and accommodating genuine concerns and interests of religious institutions, we need to reject politicians who are supporting new forms of discrimination as a way to scare up votes," Obama said. "That's not how we move America forward."

[President Obama] lambasted statements made by GOP candidates as woefully out-of-touch with reality.

"One of their leading candidates argued that going to prison turns you gay," Obama said, an apparent reference to Ben Carson, who had claimed that homosexuality in prison is proof that being gay is a choice.

"I'm just stating the facts," Obama continued. "Another candidate boasts that he introduced an amendment to end nationwide marriage equality. One said he loves the Constitution except for Article 3."

The President said that "America has left the leaders of the Republican Party behind."

[Addressing] the main topic of the evening, Obama celebrated his policy achievements that benefited LGBT Americans, including his decision to overturn the military’s ban on openly gay soldiers, his executive order banning workplace discrimination against LGBT individuals employed by the federal government and federal contractors, as well as this year’s Supreme Court’s ruling legalizing gay marriage nationwide. The lead plaintiff in the case, Jim Obergefell, introduced Obama at Sunday’s fundraiser.

The president also heralded the country’s evolving attitudes toward gay rights, noting it was a highly divisive political issue that not many Americans supported.

“Time after time, the cynics told us that we were foolish to keep believing, that we were naïve to hope, that change was too messy or not possible at all.  And if you admit it, there were some in this room here who were skeptical that everything that needed to happen would happen.  The cynics were wrong. Tonight, we live in an America where ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ is something that ‘don’t exist,’” he said.

Obama acknowledged that there was more work to be done in advancing LGBT rights, telling the audience that “to secure the gains this country has made requires continued vigilance.” He also reiterated his call for a ban on conversion therapy for LGBT youth.

From "Obama at LGBT Fundraiser: Ban ‘Conversion Therapy’ for Transgender Minors" by Terence P. Jeffrey, CNSNews.com 9/28/15

Speaking Sunday at the Democratic National Committee’s “LGBT Gala,” a fundraiser held in New York City, President Barack Obama called for legally prohibiting “conversion therapy” that aims to steer minors away from being transgender.

“We’ve come a long way in changing hearts and minds so that trans men and women can be who they are--not just on magazine covers, but in workplaces and schools and communities,” Obama said at the fundraiser, according to a transcript posted by the White House.

Obama was introduced at the gala by James Obergefell. Obergefell was one of the plaintiffs who sued the state of Ohio because it did not permit two people of the same-sex to “marry.” His name is now on the Supreme Court opinion—Obergefell v. Hodges—in which five members of the court declared that a right to same-sex marriage was guaranteed by the 14th Amendment, which was ratified in 1868.

Obama, at the “gay” festival, also quoted Harvey Milk – a San Francisco city official whose biography describes how he had a penchant for sex with young boys – as a hero of the movement.

“Harvey Milk once said, ‘If a gay person makes it, the doors are open to everyone.’ But to those of us who’ve made it through those doors, we’ve got a unique obligation to reach back and make sure other people can make it through those doors, too,” Obama said.

“We have a responsibility to stand up to bigotry not just against us, but against anybody, anywhere. We have a responsibility to stand up for freedom – not just our own freedom, but for everybody’s freedom. We speak up to condemn hatred against anybody – gay or straight, black or white, Christian, Muslim, Jew, non-believer, immigrant because we remember what silence felt like when hatred was directed at us, and we’ve got to be champions on behalf of justice for everybody, not just our own.”

Virgin Births: IVF Eliminating Fatherhood

Fertility clinics are now furthering the notion of the “synthetic family” by making fathers obsolete in procreation even among non-lesbian women who prefer to give birth prior to sexual intercourse with "Mr. Right."

-- From "Women who have never had sex give 'virgin birth' through IVF, say doctors" by Jess Staufenberg, UK Independent 9/28/15

About 25 young women in the UK who are hetereosexual and in their twenties have opted for IVF in the past five years because they feel ready to be a parent, doctors told the Mail on Sunday.

Whilst some religious groups have said a child should be brought up in a traditional family, one doctor said these single mothers are often more emotionally and financially stable than others who have been left to bring up a child after a relationship breakdown.

The news follows up a survey in 2013 which showed that one in every 200 women in the US reported to have become pregnant without having had sexual intercourse.

Out of these women, 31% said they had signed a chastity pledge whereby they vow, usually for religious reasons, not to have sex. About 28% of those girls' parents said they rarely talked to them about sex or contraception - compared to only 5% of other women who became pregnant and had had intercourse.

From "Virgin Births: 25 Heterosexual Women In Britain Have Given Birth Without Ever Having Sex" by Ellen Wallwork, The Huffington Post UK 9/28/15

Fertility treatments have opened up the ways by which women and men can become parents and four British IVF firms have said they had assisted a heterosexual virgin to have a baby: Care Fertility, The London Women’s Clinic, Create Fertility, and the Assisted Reproduction and Gynaecology Centre.

The decision to provide fertility treatment in such cases was criticised by some religious groups, who claimed it undermined the importance of bringing up children in stable marriages, as well as from Josephine Quintavalle, from the group Comment on Reproductive Ethics, who said to the Mail:

"The message from nature is for a male and female to have a child, and I am saddened that we are willing to distort this.

"The diminished role of the father is not desirable for the child. Once you start down this route, where do you stop?"

Fertiilty doctors said single women who had never had sexual intercourse were seeking donor-assisted treatment – at a cost of around £5,000 – because they wanted to have a child now and save sex for a “special relationship”.

Maha Ragunath, medical director of its clinic in Nottingham, said: “The number of single women I see has doubled over the last decade and single women now account for at least ten per cent of my patients.

“A lot of them are very young, in their 20s, sometimes studying or doing very ordinary jobs and often living with their parents, rather than career women who have been driven and focused too much on their work”

“They are extremely happy to go ahead on their own and don’t care about the implications that might bring for the child or how they would go into a new relationship.”

Supporters of the traditional family system, however, have blasted the "distorted" move, stating that it was turning young children into "teddy bears" that are to be "picked off the shelf."

Some religious groups have also claimed that the move undermines the value of having children brought up in a stable marriage, while one leading psychotherapist has warned that a mother who has never been in a relationship could potential harm the development of the child.

Imam Suhaib Hasan, head of the Islamic Sharia Council in the UK, accused doctors engaged in providing IVF treatment to patients of acting like God.

Hasan said that when the man is removed from the aspect of a family, the woman becomes merely a breeding machine. He added that it effectively denies the right of the child to have a father.

Professor Robert Winston said "test-tube babies could suffer terrible health problems because the clinics were using IVF techniques which had not been properly tested."

He added, that the risk could include birth defects, genetic damage which may not emerge until adulthood and an increased chance of cancer. The medical profession was ignoring the evidence of problems that could take place.

Aside from that, he stressed the long-term attack of IVF, and follows a growing body of evidence that test tube babies are less healthy than the naturally conceived children.

Conversely, another study had been generated by Lord Winston at over three million normal conceptions and 40,000 IVF babies that found that IVF babies were two and half times more likely to have a low birth weight and prematurity compared to those babies with normal reproduction. Since it is not 100% guaranteed, it can lead to unsuccessful birth cycle.

Winston even stated, that small babies are more likely to grow up to develop vascular disease, diabetes, hypertension and osteoporosis.

"The ACLU's claims have no merit, and we will happily defend you and our Bossier Parish Schools free of charge if you simply ignore the ACLU and affirm the constitutional rights at issue," Johnson wrote. "As usual, the ACLU is wrong on both the facts and the law."

He wrote that students have the right to set up prayer request boxes based on their own free-speech rights. Johnson also wrote that Rowland's used of the phrase "God bless" is an "an innocuous reference to our religious heritage" comparable to the mention of God in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The ACLU of Louisiana has sent an open letter to Bossier Schools Superintendent D.C. Machen concerning “a pattern of religious proselytization” at Airline High School.

[The letter concluded:]

1. Immediately remove all references to prayer from the website of Airline and any other schools in the Bossier Parish school district;

2. Immediately remove the “prayer boxes” and any similar devices at Airline and any other schools in the Bossier Parish school district;

3. Educate all school staff regarding the Constitutional protections of students and staff from religious indoctrination; and

4. Instruct the principal of Airline that neither he nor his staff may include religious references of any kind in school communications.

These policies and procedures must be communicated to all students and their parents or guardians.

The nonprofit also says it plans to prove that the allegations being brought against Airline High are false. And Freedom Guard advises the school to keep the prayer boxes and don't change a thing.

The prayer boxes were placed by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, a student organization. The project was completely student-led, which the U.S. Constitution allows, said Mike Johnson, CEO of Freedom Guard.

Superintendent Machen has received a demand from the ACLU, as well as the attached letter from Mike Johnson of Freedom Guard.  Both letters have been referred to the Board's legal counsel for review.  As a public body, the Bossier Parish School Board is limited to taking official action at duly-convened meetings of the Board.  As the subject letter was just received, it has been placed on the agenda of the Board's October 1, 2015 School Board meeting.  Further comment will result from any action at that meeting.

In the meantime, please understand that the Bossier Parish School System enjoys an established record of achievement. Such success is due in large part to the fact that, as in this case, the system respects both the law and the religious beliefs of all its students and employees.

Muslim President? How About Christian — Ben Carson

After the fury over presidential candidate Ben Carson saying that he wouldn't support a Muslim for president because Islamic Sharia Law is in conflict with the Constitution, liberal attack media have dug up old video of Carson explaining to a Christian audience that evolution is a satanic theory.

Thus, the media is asking, Can a Bible-believing Christian be president?

“[Socialists] have to knock down the strongest pillars: the Judeo-Christian belief system and the strong family values.”
“[The theory of evolution] has become what is scientifically, politically correct. Amazingly, there are a significant number of scientists who do not believe it but they’re afraid to say anything.”

On Tuesday, Buzzfeed uncovered a speech given by Carson in 2012 in which he called the Big Bang Theory part of the fairy tales created by scientists and said Darwin's theory of evolution was "encouraged" by the devil.

The speech, titled "Celebration of Creation," also includes Carson calling scientists "highfalutin" and the Big Bang "ridiculous."

Carson, who has always been outspoken about his views on creationism, is no stranger to bombastic viewpoints and opinions.

From "Ben Carson’s Religious Beliefs Come Under Scrutiny" by David Knowles, Bloomberg 9/23/15

[This week] several articles have been written pointing to a 2011 speech Carson delivered to fellow Seventh Day Adventists. Titled “Celebration of Creation” . . .

“I find the big bang really quite fascinating. I mean, here you have all these highfalutin scientists and they’re saying it was this gigantic explosion and everything came into perfect order. Now these are the same scientists that go around touting the second law of thermodynamics, which is entropy, which says that things move toward a state of disorganization,” Carson said in his 2011 speech. “So now you’re gonna have this big explosion and everything becomes perfectly organized and when you ask them about it they say, ‘Well we can explain this, based on probability theory because if there’s enough big explosions, over a long period of time, billions and billions of years, one of them will be the perfect explosion,” continued Carson. “So I say what you’re telling me is if I blow a hurricane through a junkyard enough times over billions and billions of years, eventually after one of those hurricanes there will be a 747 fully loaded and ready to fly.”

From "Ben Carson Believes Big Bang Is Fairy Tale, Evolution ‘Encouraged’ By Devil" by The Associated Press - CBS News (Washington, D.C.) 9/23/15

In a speech at Cedarville University Tuesday, Carson defended his comments, saying he shouldn’t be denigrated for his faith.

“Here’s the key, I then say to [evolutionists] look, ‘I’m not going to criticize you. You have a lot more faith then I have.’ I don’t have enough faith to believe that,” he said, according to BuzzFeed News.

He added, “I give you credit for that, but I’m not going to denigrate you because of your faith and you shouldn’t denigrate me for mine. And that’s the kind of attitude … that I think is very important in the society in which we live today.”

From "Dr. Ben Carson’s Life Story Rests on a Deep Adventist Faith" by Jack Martinez and Matthew Cooper, Newsweek 9/20/15

Carson has argued for the superiority of creationism over the theory of evolution. In an interview with Newsweek earlier this year, he distanced himself from certitude about the Earth’s age. “I don’t know how old the earth is and the distance between ages,” he said. “There could be a billion years between ages.” He has said that his beliefs about science and religion “correlate.”

Carson’s rise in the polls as he seeks the Republican presidential nomination has spurred interest in the church that has shaped so much of his life. If he continues to gain momentum, Americans are bound to have questions about the Seventh-day Adventists, just as they did about Mitt Romney’s Mormon faith and, at another time, John F. Kennedy’s Catholicism.

Adventists share many of the ideological tenets of evangelical Christianity. Carson the Adventist is another voice in a large field of Christian conservative presidential candidates, such as Baptists Mike Huckabee and Ted Cruz and Catholic Rick Santorum. By some estimates, there are 1.2 million Adventists in the U.S.

Evangelicals make up a major part of Carson’s current base . . .

He believed in God.”

“One of the things I’m hoping to do over the next few years, one of the books coming up on my docket,” Carson continued,  “is called The Organ of Species – not The Origin of Species, The Organ of Species – and we’re going to talk about the organs of the body and how they completely refute evolution, and several other things as well.”

In 2004, Carson served on the President’s Council on Bioethics and in 2008 he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In 2010, Dr. Carson was elected into the National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine, considered one of the most prestigious honors in medicine.

. . . Let us remember the Golden Rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” (Mt 7:12). . . . The yardstick we use for others will be the yardstick which time will use for us. The Golden Rule also reminds us of our responsibility to protect and defend human life at every stage of its development.

. . . I will end my visit to your country in Philadelphia, where I will take part in the World Meeting of Families. It is my wish that throughout my visit the family should be a recurrent theme. How essential the family has been to the building of this country! And how worthy it remains of our support and encouragement! Yet I cannot hide my concern for the family, which is threatened, perhaps as never before, from within and without. Fundamental relationships are being called into question, as is the very basis of marriage and the family. I can only reiterate the importance and, above all, the richness and the beauty of family life.

In particular, I would like to call attention to those family members who are the most vulnerable, the young. . . . we might say that we live in a culture which pressures young people not to start a family, because they lack possibilities for the future. Yet this same culture presents others with so many options that they too are dissuaded from starting a family. . . .

God bless America!

From "In meeting with nuns, Pope Francis makes quiet protest of Obamacare" by Gregory Korte, USA TODAY 9/23/15

Pope Francis made an unscheduled stop to visit the Little Sisters of the Poor Wednesday, a move that Vatican officials said was intended to send a message of support in the nuns' battle against Obamacare.

The religious order of Catholic sisters is suing the Obama administration over a provision of the Affordable Care Act that the administration has interpreted as requiring the sisters to purchase health insurance with birth control coverage.

Louisville Archbishop Joseph Kurtz, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, said the court case represents the broader understanding of freedom of religion held by the Catholic church.

“Freedom of religion also means the ability to live out your religion,” he said. “The last thing the Little Sisters of the Poor want to do is sue somebody. They want to serve the poor and the elderly, and do so in a way that doesn’t conflict with their beliefs. We feel strongly about that. It’s a freedom not of special privilege, it’s a freedom to serve others, and serve others in such a way that does not compromise the integrity of our beliefs.”

From "Pope visited Little Sisters of the Poor to show support in fight against Obama’s HHS mandate: Vatican" by Lisa Bourne, LifeSiteNews 9/24/15

The Holy Father visited the Little Sisters of the Poor Wednesday after earlier in the day calling for protection of religious freedom in his welcome address at the White House.

“This is a sign, obviously of support for them,” said Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, head of the Holy See Press Office. “In this sense it is connected also to the words that the Pope has said in support of the Bishops of the United States in the speech to President Obama.”

The sisters’ refusal to compromise their Catholic values by providing contraception and abortifacients to their staff as required with the Obamacare mandate and resulting continued legal fight for a mandate exemption, rejected because they don’t exclusively employ Catholics and they serve people of all faiths, has made them an example of the attack on religious freedom in the U.S.

The [Obama] administration demanded the nuns comply in January 2014 even after the Supreme Court gave them an injunction temporarily protecting them from the mandate.

From "5 Judges: Forcing Contraception Reg on Nuns Like Providing 'Only Non-Kosher Food' to Jewish Prisoner" by Terence P. Jeffrey, CNSNews.com 9/24/15

Five appeals court judges have joined in a dissenting opinion stating that the type of argument being used to justify the government's efforts to force the Little Sisters of the Poor to comply with an Obamacare regulation that requires their health-care plan to cover sterilizations, contraceptives and abortion-inducing drugs could also be used to force a Christian to work on Dec. 25 because the court had determined that “sources show that Jesus was actually born in March.”

Or, the judges said, the same type of reasoning could be used to justify providing a Jewish prisoner with “only non-Kosher food.”

The judges were objecting to a decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit, on which they sit, which ruled that the Obama administration can force the nuns to comply with the regulation even though doing so compels the sisters to act against their Catholic faith.

“The Little Sisters of the Poor are Catholic nuns who devote their lives to caring for the elderly poor,” said [the Catholic organization's] petition. “The government has put them to the impossible choice of either violating the law or violating the faith upon which their lives and ministry are based.

“When a law demands that a person do something the person considers sinful and the penalty for refusal is a large financial penalty, then the law imposes a substantial burden on that person’s free exercise of religion,” said the judges.

Angry Muslims Storm New Jersey School Board

School officials in Jersey City, New Jersey called for security after an unruly mob of Muslim parents attempted a take-over of the School Board meeting last week.  The local religious minority demanded that the school officially declare an Islamic holiday on September 24th.

-- From "Jersey City School Board Meeting Gets Heated During Debate Over Closing for Muslim Holiday" by Brian Thompson, WNBC-TV4 (New York, NY) 9/17/15

The Jersey City Board of Education had originally proposed to close schools next Thursday so that Muslim students could observe the [Eid al-Adha] holiday, and the City Council unanimously supported it a week ago. The academic year would have extended one day to June 23, 2016 as a result.

But during the nearly four hours of debate at the board meeting Thursday, some of the Jewish faith said they felt they were being discriminated against because they weren't getting their own school days off for holidays like Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

In the original resolution announcing the vote, the board said it was "committed to honoring the great diversity of our district, including our religious diversity," and that it will "continue to engage our communities to explore ways to support its diverse communities and celebrate our many cultures and faiths."

From "Jersey City won't close school for Islamic holiday" by Laura Herzog, New Jersey Star-Ledger 9/19/15

On Friday, Jersey City Schools Superintendent Marcia Lyles said board members were concerned that it would be too disruptive to declare a new school holiday without more advance notice.

On Saturday, Jessica Abdelnabbi Berrocal, a Muslim parent in Jersey City who started the petition for the holiday in June, said she thinks the vote rather meant that "they aren't ready for the change."

Lyles's Chief of Staff Maryann Dickar, who also attended the meeting, said it is inaccurate to characterize the debate on the holiday as "a conflict between Jews and Muslims." She said she recalled only one statement that referenced the Jewish holiday, among "hundreds" of other comments.

From "New York City Schools Observing Muslim Holiday For First Time" by Julia Glum, International Business Times 9/23/15

New York City public schools were scheduled to close Thursday for their first time recognizing the Muslim holiday Eid al-Adha. The district, which serves about 1.1 million students, was due to become the largest school system in the United States to shut down for the observance. Local Muslims welcomed the move as a symbol of the community's acceptance and shift toward inclusion, Agence France Presse reported.

New York City has an estimated 600,000 to 1 million Muslim residents, and between 10 and 12 percent of its public school students identify as Muslim. That means that holy days tended to devastate attendance -- for example, the last time Eid al-Adha was on a school day, more than one-third of PS/IS 30 in Brooklyn was absent, according to a news release.

About two years after first agreeing to give students the day off, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the calendar change in March. He officially canceled classes on Eid al-Fitr, which occurred in July and marked the end of the fasting month Ramadan, and Eid al-Adha. Eid al-Adha, also called the Feast of Sacrifice, runs from Wednesday night to Thursday night. Schools in New York City were already closed Wednesday for the Jewish observance of Yom Kippur.

“It is a huge victory to actually see the day come,” says Linda Sarsour, a member of the Coalition for Muslim School Holidays and a New York activist with three children.

“As an imam as well as a parent I am very happy,” agreed Imam Shamsi Ali, director of the Jamaica Muslim Center in Queens.

“I’m sure this kind of policy from the government side will push Muslims further to feel a sense of belonging,” he said.

New York follows at least seven other school districts that close for Eid in New Jersey, Massachusetts and Vermont, but activists are still campaigning in other parts of the country.

Ibrahim Hooper, spokesperson for the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the country’s largest Muslim civil liberties organization, agreed that the holiday comes at the right time.

Religion or Gay Agenda: Calif. Students to Choose

In a guide by the University of California Santa Barbara titled “Homosexuality and Religion” posted on the Sociology Department’s “Sex Info Online” website, students are taught to reject religious beliefs that do not yield "full acceptance" to any sexual deviancy currently in vogue, such as tenets of the homosexual and transgender agenda.

For background, read how Religious Liberty is in the Homosexualists' Crosshairs

-- From "UCSB teaches students to reconcile faith with homosexual behavior" by Peter Hasson, Texas Campus Correspondent, Campus Reform 9/18/15

. . . It is religion’s “emphasis on pious virtue,” the guide continues, that has created a “hierarchy of purity” where polyamorous, homosexual, and extramarital sex are “labeled” as “abnormal and repulsive.”

However, the guide says, these religious views are simply the result of outdated ignorance. The guide claims that all forms of sexual orientation, gender identity, and relationships are natural, “though some religions may not see it this way.”

The university’s Resource Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity has an FAQ section, including the question “[h]ow can I reconcile my or my loved one's sexual orientation with my faith?”

The university answers this question, in part, by reassuring students that it is up to the individual to “make choices in order to reconcile religion with homosexuality and gender variance,” by either working to change their religion or leaving it altogether.

From "Homosexuality and Religion" by University of California Santa Barbara, Sociology Department

Religion and sexual identity are two aspects of our culture that have historically appeared to clash. Until recently, “the religious condemnation of homosexual acts, and even homosexual persons, was unquestioned.” Regular participation in organized worship has proven to be the strongest demographic predictor of whether a person disapproves of homosexual relationships or not. Yet this relationship has fluctuated immensely throughout time. Each faith holds a unique view on sexuality that has come to shape how we perceive sex. Oftentimes, these convictions are adjusted as we adapt to the diversity of sexual expressions in the world.

There are three primary stances on homosexuality in regards to religion:

    Rejectionism
“Love the sinner, hate the sin”
    Full acceptance

Rejectionism is held mainly by Judeo-Christian denominations that embrace a more fundamental, Biblical interpretation of sexuality. This approach entirely objects to the idea that homosexuals deserve equal rights. “Love the sinner, hate the sin” holds that LGBT people should be regarded with equal amount of respect; however, homosexual behaviors are not tolerated. This modified rejectionism perspective accepts that sexuality cannot be changed but states that one can only be obedient to a higher power as long as they abstain from homoerotic activities. The full acceptance approach believes that queer people are entitled to all civil and social rights as do their heterosexual counterparts. Quakers have a long-standing tradition of accepting both homosexuals as a person and a behavior, while the Episcopalian Church has recently made a move towards this ideology.

Churches have even been created under this egalitarian ideal of full acceptance. Reverend Troy Perry founded the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches in 1968 as a part of his coming out process in his book: The Lord is My Shepherd and He Knows I’m Gay.  The advent of this Church signaled to how inclusive spirituality has grown to be. Similar to the Universal Fellowship, a majority of religions have subgroups of queer-identified members. People are able to straddle the boundary between the faith and sexuality using support groups within each faith that acknowledge gay identities and affirm the normalcy of gay piousness

For centuries, legislation has tried to restrict sexual acts ranging from sodomy to polygamy. Such harsh ordinances often stem from strict religious practices that advocate celibacy, monogamy, and heterosexuality. This emphasis on pious virtue has consequently created a hierarchy of purity where normal and healthy sex is defined as heterosexual, married, monogamous, and intended for reproduction. As a result, polyamourous and homosexual sex, as well as sex outside of marriage, were labeled as abnormal and repulsive, something that should be relegated by law.  These notions of “normalcy” are based on documents written centuries ago when mankind lacked a full understanding of the wide spectrum of sexuality. As our world progresses, we now appreciate that all forms of sexual orientation, gender identity, and relationships are natural and should be treated equally under the law, though some religions may not see it in this way.

Individuals who fall outside of this orthodox spectrum—including unmarried, polyamourous, or queer-identified people—may feel anxious that their sexuality does not perfectly align with these spiritual mandates. Some individuals feel torn between the doctrines they were raised learning and whom they grew to become. When a great deal of one’s ethics is based on a specific faith, it may directly conflict with their identity as a nonvirgin, queer, or polyamorous individual. In order to mitigate any tensions between religion and sexuality, it is critical to know that a gay and religious identity can coexist in harmony. It is 100% possible to be devout and sexually active. Being religious does not necessitate that you are completely asexual. Though an individual may not follow their religious doctrines down to the last syllable in terms of sexuality, it is still entirely possible to one’s structure life around the premises of respect and love that are a foundation for many faiths around the globe.

There is an enormous range of perspectives taken on sexuality. Here, we explore some of the most well known sects across the world.

Christianity

One of the most prominent and outspoken views on homosexuality is seen in Christianity. A letter from the Corinthians taken from the New Testament of the Bible succinctly sums up how some Western faiths choose to view sexuality: “Because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband” (7:2)2. This conservative discourse has brought about many of the limitations and stigmas that revolve around sexuality in our society today. Christianity has emphasized a need to be chaste and labeled those who do not abide as sinners. It is distinctive in the premium it puts on heterosexual monogamy. A recurring theme states to “Love the sinner, hate the sin.” Homosexual couples, therefore, are excluded from the sacrament of matrimony.

Judaism

Jewish creeds on homosexuality are found mainly in the Old Testament of the Bible. Sexuality is portrayed as “a gift to be used responsibly and in obedience to God’s will.”3 Pervasive themes include the importance of intimacy and procreation in a relationship between a male and female. Infidelity and polygyny is scorned. This is because the Canaanites, a rival fertility cult, openly practiced mating rituals and temple prostitution in their culture; considering the two were enemies, Jewish law began to regulate any foreign behavior like homosexuality. Sexual variation, as seen in the Canaanites, was seen as a threat to group harmony. Queer individuals still struggle with full acceptance in this faith.

Islam

There is a great deal of variety in Islam faith regarding homosexuality, mainly due to the fact that Muslims do not have a single, central source of authority (like the Pope, for example). As a polylithic faith, it allows for a diverse range of beliefs. In general, Muslim texts take a much more sex-positive stance than most. Sexuality is first and foremost a mechanism for pleasure, and secondarily a means of reproduction (which is quite the opposite of Catholicism). Intercourse in marriage is considered the highest good of human life. Both polygyny (marriage between a man and multiple wives) and cocubinage (the practice of having a woman who lives with a man but has lower status than his wife) are sanctioned by Islam; even the Prophet Muhammad had several wives. Muslims do not follow celibacy, or refraining from sexual activity until marriage. Contraception is encouraged by law. Muhammad himself support al’azl (the withdrawal method) as a way of enjoying intercourse, though today this is viewed as an outdated method of birth control. Therefore, many within this faith support homosexuality.

No to Lesbian Adoption: Supreme Court in Alabama

The Alabama Supreme Court overturned the Alabama family court decision to recognize a 2007 Georgia adoption of three children by the lesbian lover of their mother.  After the Alabama lesbian couple separated in 2011, the Jefferson County mother fought (in Alabama court) against visitation rights granted her former lover, claiming that the Georgia adoption was invalid because neither lesbian was ever a Georgia resident.

-- From "Alabama Court Refuses to Recognize Lesbian Mother's Adoption" by Kim Chandler, Associated Press 9/18/15

The Alabama justices said a Georgia court was wrong to allow the adoptions, arguing that Georgia law doesn't allow such second-parent adoptions.

The Alabama justices said "Georgia law makes no provision for a non-spouse to adopt a child without first terminating the parental rights of the current parents."

The justices said since the children's biological mother maintained her parental rights, the Georgia court "was not empowered to enter the Georgia judgment declaring (her) to be an adoptive parent of the children."

From "Alabama court voids lesbian couple's Georgia adoption agreement" by Reuters Media 9/19/15

After breaking up in 2011, one woman in the relationship, referred to as V.L., filed a petition in Alabama in 2013 saying she was being denied parental rights by her former partner, referred to as E.L., the biological mother of the children.

In a seven-to-one decision, the court said "the Georgia court was not empowered to enter the Georgia judgment declaring V.L. to be an adoptive parent of the children. ... The Georgia judgment is accordingly void, and the full faith and credit clause does not require the courts of Alabama to recognize that judgment."

The lawyer for E.L., Randall Nichols, said via email that his client was pleased with the decision but regards it as a private family matter.

From "Alabama Supreme Court says state doesn't have to recognize lesbian adoption from Georgia" by Kent Faulk, The Birmingham News 9/18/15

Alabama has the authority to determine who may adopt based on the best interest of the child to be adopted, [Alabama Justice Tom] Parker wrote. "To this end, the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit has held that a state has a legitimate interest in encouraging a stable and nurturing environment for an adopted child by encouraging that the child be raised in the optimal family structure with both a father and a mother," he wrote.

The women had been in a long term relationship and had three children through artificial insemination. The non-biological mother, V.L., adopted the children in Georgia. The biological mother participated in that process and consented in to the adoptions.

When the parents later broke up, the biological mother, E.L., kept V.L. from seeing the children, according to V.L.'s attorneys. V.L. sought visitation in Alabama, where the family lives. E.L. opposed her request, arguing that the Georgia adoption was invalid in Alabama.

The case was first appealed to the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals. That court ruled in October 2014 that the Jefferson County judge had erred when he granted V.L. visitation rights. But then that appeals court reversed itself in February. The case was then appealed to the Alabama Supreme Court.

Only Christian Prayers Allowed by Arizona City

A typical American might have thought that a 2014 Supreme Court decision restored prayer to its rightful place in civic proceedings, but over the past several months, minority religions and all varieties of atheists have demanded the right to lead "prayers."

This week, the City Council of Coolidge, Arizona voted 4-to-2 to only allow Christian prayers before it meetings, but its legal counsel and the American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona have warned of discrimination lawsuits, and locals are arguing over the definition of "Christian."

Councilman Rob Hudelson moved to amend the proposal, saying Christianity is in the country’s history.

Councilman Gilbert Lopez, a member of a Catholic church, voted to reject the Christian prayer-only proposal.

“We are of the opinion it would violate the Constitution and send a really bad message to folks that live in the town of Coolidge that, if they’re not Christian, then they are excluded from participating in government affairs,” [ACLU legal director Victoria] Lopez told The Associated Press.

Councilman Gary Lewis voted in favor of the proposal. He said he may leave the room if he didn’t support the person who was delivering the prayer.

"Under my faith, I wouldn't sit here and listen to it," Lewis said. "I would walk away."

On Monday's agenda was a resolution to allow members of all religious organizations within Coolidge to offer a prayer, moment of silence or short message at the start of council meetings. Councilman Rob Hudelson, a Baptist pastor, suggested amending the resolution to limit it to only Christian groups. His proposal passed on a 4-2 vote.

"I've had conversations with many people in the public, including local pastors," [Councilman Gary Lewis] said. "And while many agree that it was a good idea, it is not something that would be (legally) successful, and I agree with that. I don't agree with anything that would bring that much litigation towards the city."

Lewis said he would prefer that no invocation be allowed before meetings, as is city policy now. Coolidge allowed invocations from 1996 to 2007, but Lewis said they stopped due to a lack of interest from the religious community.

City Attorney Denis Fitzgibbons previously advised the council not to include the Christian-only stipulation. Council members will then convene a regular open meeting at 6:30 p.m., during which they will be able to vote on the issue of invocations at meetings.

[The ACLU's Victoria] Lopez said at least one complaint had been filed with her office since the story broke Tuesday, but she had not had time to properly review its contents. She said the ACLU could take legal action if the council stays the course.

Vatican Opposes Obama Pushing Gay Agenda at Pope

Anti-Catholic forces have teamed up with the first homosexualist president of the United States, Barack Obama, for an ambush of Pope Francis during his first visit to America by setting up a photo op reception at the White House including a who's who of sexual revolutionaries, but the Vatican says the Pope will have no part in such advancement of the Gay Agenda and its degradation of Catholic doctrine.
“It is so fitting that the least friendly administration to religion in history would invite a collection of pro-abortion nuns, Catholic gay activists, assorted dissidents and religious rebels to attend Pope Francis' visit to the White House on September 23.”

The Vatican is expressing displeasure with the Obama administration's move to invite certain LGBT activists to the White House for Pope Francis's visit next week, The Wall Street Journal reports.

A senior Vatican official told the newspaper about worries that photos with transgender activists, the nation's first openly gay Episcopal bishop and another activist could be interpreted as a papal endorsement.

The Vatican official said the presence of several of the activists was irritating given that it is unclear whether the White House has yet invited any anti-abortion advocates, a top issue for U.S. bishops.

White House aides on Thursday evening downplayed differences between positions of the pope and the Obama administration, instead focusing on potential areas of mutual interest, such as climate change.

[Catholic Online] reports that Obama "has stacked the deck" against Francis by inviting an "'A list' of infamous American Catholics to meet the Holy Father."

The move to invite to the welcome ceremony transgender activists, the first openly gay Episcopal bishop and an activist nun who heads a group that has been chided by the Vatican for its silence on abortion and euthanasia is intended to make a political statement, the report says, and is being perceived as rude and challenging.

Francis makes his first trip to the U.S. next week. He will visit Washington, D.C., where he will address Congress, New York and Philadelphia. He will celebrate Mass on the Ben Franklin Parkway on Sunday, Sept. 27 before returning to Rome.

From "Vatican: White House is 'smarter' than playing politics with reception guest list" by Stephanie Kirchgaessner in Rome and Dan Roberts in Washington, UK Guardian 9/18/15

A Vatican official has said the White House was “smart enough” to know it ought not to try to embarrass Pope Francis at a planned welcome reception for the pontiff next week that will include several guests – including a transgender woman and gay activists – whose presence highlights some of the church’s exclusionary policies.

The Vatican official – who asked not to be identified – said that . . . it would be the White House, not the Holy See, that would find it embarrassing if the welcome party, which will partly be held on the South Lawn and will include 15,000 guests, looked like a political stunt.

Conservative media outlets have in recent days reported that the assembled guests will include Sister Simone Campbell, an activist nun and Guardian contributor who supported the passage of the Affordable Care Act – known as Obamacare – even though it contained provisions involving abortion funding that were opposed by US bishops. Bishop Gene Robinson, a gay former Episcopalian bishop, has also reportedly been invited, as has a transgender activist, Vivian Taylor.

From "Vatican Disputes White House Guest List for Papal Visit" by Francis X. Rocca, Wall Street Journal 9/17/15

The tension exemplifies concerns among conservative Catholics, including many bishops, that the White House will use the pope’s visit to play down its differences with church leaders on such contentious issues as same-sex marriage and the contraception mandate in the health care law.

Dignity Washington, a group of LBGT Catholics in Washington, D.C., are excited about Pope Francis’ visit on September 22nd and are hoping his message of non-judgement continues as they seek acceptance from the church.

Bishop Gene Robinson, who has also been invited to the pope’s welcoming ceremony, is a former Episcopal bishop of New Hampshire and the first openly gay Episcopal bishop in the U.S. He is also an ex-spouse in a same-sex marriage. He didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Another guest, Mateo Williamson, is a former co-head of the transgender caucus of Dignity USA, a group for LGBT Catholics. He said the Vatican’s disapproval of his presence at the ceremony “speaks to the necessity for continued dialogue” between transgender Catholics and the church hierarchy.

Mr. Williamson, who is transgender, said he would be attending the ceremony as a guest of Vivian Taylor, a transgender woman who was invited by the White House and who formerly served as executive director of Integrity USA, an LBGT advocacy group in the Episcopal Church.

From "Catholic Leaders Denounce White House for Inviting Pro-Abortion, Gay Rights Activists to Pope’s Reception" by Barbara Hollingsworth, CNSNews.com 9/18/15

“It is a disgrace,” Princeton Professor Robert George told CNSNews.com.

“Barack Obama is a president who would not even raise the case of imprisoned Saudi dissident Raif Badawi when visiting Saudi Arabian King Salman, lest the king's religious sensibilities be offended. He is a president who makes a deal with the Iranian regime without demanding release of Christian pastor Saeed Abidini, who languishes in a prison cell because of his faith.

“Yet this same Barack Obama insults the Pope and faithful Catholics everywhere with stunts like this.”

Fr. Frank Pavone, founder of Priests for Life, who told CNSNews.com that he was not invited to the reception, said that this was part of the administration’s larger pattern of disrespect towards religion.

“This president, this administration has a pattern that I've noticed over the years, and some of it has intersected with me quite directly,” Pavone said. “It is a pattern of really disrespectfully stepping into divisions within the Catholic community and stepping in on the wrong side of those divisions, using the Catholic Church and using the trappings of Catholicism to advance his own morally incompetent agenda.”

From "The Vatican Isn’t Happy About Obama’s Guest List For The Pope" by Blake Neff, Reporter, Daily Caller 9/18/15

Overall, though, the Obama administration has been trying to emphasize the ways it agrees with the Vatican, rather than the social issues like abortion where they diverge sharply. Vice President Joe Biden (who is Catholic) says he’s read all of Francis’s recent encyclical on climate change, and Francis’s visit to a Philadelphia prison could bolster Obama’s own push for criminal justice reform.

But friction may be inevitable, especially if the pope feels put off by Obama’s guest list in the White House. He plans to speak on the topic of religious liberty during his visit to Philadelphia, which may provide an opportunity to condemn Obamacare’s contraception mandate.

From "The White House is more afraid of offending China’s president than the pope" by Washington Post Editorial Board 9/18/15

What struck us as we read about this small controversy is the contrast between the administration’s apparent decision to risk a bit of rudeness in the case of the pope and its overwhelming deference to foreign dictators when similar issues arise. When Secretary of State John F. Kerry traveled to Havana to reopen the U.S. Embassy recently, he painstakingly excluded from the guest list any democrat, dissident or member of civil society who might offend the Castro brothers.

And when Chinese President Xi Jinping comes to the White House next week, shortly after the pope leaves town, it’s a safe bet that he won’t have to risk being photographed with anyone of whom he disapproves. Chen Guangcheng, the courageous blind lawyer, for example, lives nearby in exile, but he probably won’t be at the state dinner. Neither will Falun Gong activists, democracy advocates or anyone else who might, well, give offense.
