Clemson Boots 'Prayer Solicitation Without Permit'

Officials at Clemson University have confirmed that ordinary Christians are forbidden to exercise their First Amendment right to assemble on campus in discreet prayer unless they first obtain a permit, which then restricts them to a "designated free speech zone."

Kyra Palange was walking across Clemson’s campus last Thursday afternoon when she saw a man sitting in a folding chair, with an empty chair sitting next to him.

The Clemson grad student walked closer to him and saw a sign on the empty chair that said “PRAYER,” according to the Young America’s Foundation [YAF].

“I approached him and we sat down to pray for a few minutes,” Palange told Young America’s Foundation. “When we finished, a man from the university approached us and said he could not be praying there because it was not a ‘designated free speech area’ and presented the person who was praying with a form for the procedures for applying for ‘solicitation’ on campus. He told him he had to leave.”

Palange captured part of the interaction on video. In it, a Clemson University official identified as Shawn Jones confirms to Palange that the entire campus is not a “free speech area.”

The school is defending [Shawn Jones], arguing it would actually have violated the Constitution to not stop the man’s prayer.

“With him not being a student or faculty or staff, he has to go through the proper procedures in order to [do this] … this is not a designated free speech area,” Jones says in the video.

The praying man, [Clemson spokesman Mark] Land said, was not affiliated with a campus group, and he was allegedly soliciting because he had put up a sign inviting passersby to join him in prayer. Land also argued that the school’s action was directly in accordance with the Constitution, because the school was not giving the man a special exception from school policy because of the content of his speech.

. . . Clemson has been accused of having overly restrictive free speech policies. The school has a Red Light rating (the lowest) from the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, which rates schools on their free speech policies.

. . . staff member [Shawn Jones] approached the man and told him what the policies were and that he needed to fill out paperwork.

The man was polite and filled out the necessary papers, but the student [Kyra Palange] who was praying with him got extremely upset.

The staff member told the man that he could continue to sit and pray as long as he would remove his sign.

The staff member also told the man that if he wanted to put up a sign and invite a gathering, he would need to reserve one of the areas of campus designated as available to the public.

The tax-exempt nonprofit educational group [My Faith Votes] says it will undertake a national media campaign that will gather steam into the November presidential election.

"In the last four presidential elections, an average of less than five million votes separated the major candidates." My Faith Votes President Sealy Yates, said in a statement. "Yet, more than 25 million Christians didn't bother to even show up at the polls in 2012."

The group said Carson agreed to take on the position the same day he announced he could not see a "path forward" for his presidential campaign on Wednesday. He did not participate in the GOP debate on Thursday.

Asked if the new job would preclude him from endorsing a fellow candidate, Carson confidante and business manager Armstrong Williams said he was "never" going to endorse a candidate.

Ban Christians From Missouri Schools, Atheists Say

The Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) is demanding that Christian leaders be banned from several Missouri schools because a video at Hollister Middle School shows Robert Bruce, leader of a local Christian youth group called K-Life, joining student-led prayer in the cafeteria.

"It's not necessarily freedom from religion, but it's freedom of religion. . . . we are also not going to inhibit that religion."

"There's not been a parent of Hollister schools nor a student that has issued a complaint. However, we did receive a letter out of Madison Wisconsin," says [Supt.] Wilson.

The superintendent says Christian students at the school have been initiating prayers during lunch, and that day, the students asked Mr. Bruce to participate in the prayer.

The school investigated and chose to continue to allow Mr. Bruce on campus despite the letter's explicit demand that Bruce and other adult K-Life representatives be barred from entering the district schools during the school day.

"We've communicated with Mr. Bruce and to the K-Life organization just as we would any other organization. We would like for them to adhere to all school policies and regulations," says Wilson.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation issued a press release stating that a representative from area youth ministry KLIFE has been allowed access to students at the Branson, Hollister, Reeds Spring and Bradleyville school districts.

Hollister Superintendent Brian Wilson said the situation pointed out by the Freedom From Religion Foundation has already been handled.

“(The middle school students) were beginning to pray at lunch,” Wilson said. “They sat around a table. It wasn’t disruptive. It grew to multiple tables. The individual from K-Life was asked to pray at the beginning of one lunch period for that group. That was probably where he overstepped the lines. At no time was it promoted by us. At no time was it done by the school.”

“We addressed the situation with them. We went over the proceedings with them. That's where we’re are at. We think that it is at a moot point. We are not trying to promote, and we are not trying to inhibit. We have taken care of the issue. My job is to educate kids and give the kids at Hollister schools the best education that they can have.”

At this point, the [FFRF] — which posted the video on its website — has not ruled out the possibility of taking legal action.

[Supt.] Wilson said students can exercise their First Amendment right to pray in school, if they want to, and the district has communicated the rules governing activities during the school day to KLIFE and other community visitors. But, the district will still permit visitors and student groups that want to meet before and after school.

In the letter, the Wisconsin-based foundation demanded Hollister put an end to "organized prayer" during lunch, discipline any employees that allow the prayers to take place and bar KLIFE representatives from visiting schools.

The foundation also wrote letters to the Branson and Reeds Spring districts, demanding each investigate the amount of access it provides to "predatory evangelists."

Cal State Boots Christian Club — Too Faithful

California State University in Turlock has de-recognized the Stanislaus Christian Fellowship chapter of Chi Alpha after being on campus for 40 years because the club limits its leadership to Christians.  Cal State officials declared, "What they cannot be is faith-based where someone has to have a profession of faith to be that leader."

Stanislaus Christian Fellowship Chi Alpha is crying discrimination to a recently implemented open-membership policy, which has been enforced by the California State University system in an effort to eliminate discrimination in student organizations system wide.

With withdrawal of recognition, Chi Alpha is no longer eligible for benefits made available to recognized groups, including those made possible through taxpayers and student fees. They are also no longer able to reserve space on campus, gain access to a mailbox in the Student Leadership & Development Office, and make use of accounting services.

Although numerous student organizations throughout the state are facing the same fate as Chi Alpha due to discrimination based on race, religion, age, and gender among others, the student group perceives CSU Stanislaus’ action as a personal affront to their beliefs and religious freedom.

Councilman Matthew Jacob sent out a news release late Thursday, asking the university to reverse its decision and reinstate Stanislaus Christian Fellowship. The local student group is part of the Chi Alpha campus ministries organization, which has more than 300 student group chapters at campuses internationally.

The membership of Chi Alpha’s Stanislaus chapter is open to any student, but it requires that its leaders, who lead worship services and Bible studies, affirm the group’s Christian beliefs. The councilman said compliance with university policy would potentially pave the way for non-Christians to take on leadership roles in a fundamentally Christian student organization.

The councilman said the local student group believes it would be illogical to have leaders teaching and mentoring other club members about a faith that they themselves do not practice. Jacob said it would infringe on the student group’s religious freedoms to adopt this university policy.

Jacob called the university’s action an “injustice.” He said he approached university officials, hoping to help the students work out a resolution with the campus. But he said he felt like he was getting the runaround from university officials.

In a letter to Suzanne Espinoza, Cal State’s vice president for enrollment and student affairs, the group argued that the discriminatory policy “[b]urdens Chi Alpha’s sincere religious exercise,[i]mproperly interferes with the internal affairs of a religious organization, and [v]iolates the law, including the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and Article I of the California Constitution.”

The letter also urged the university to reinstate its recognition of Chi Alpha.

The student group has secured the legal services of the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty . . .

“The price of admission to a state school shouldn’t include denying your faith,” Becket Fund lawyer Adele Keim explained in an interview with Campus Reform.

Assemblywoman Shannon Grove (R-Bakersfield) proposed a bill called the Student Freedom of Association Act. The bill was proposed to fight the “Open Membership Policy”, a policy that requires that membership and leadership positions within recognized student organizations be open for all students, even if those students disagree with the purpose or beliefs of the club.

The policy lost Stanislaus Christian Fellowship their recognition. Lynch was asked what would happen if this bill came into effect.

“It would be premature to speculate on any proposed legislation,” Lynch said.

Austin, Texas abortion advocate Melanie Maria Toney, 52, expressed her pro-death attitude at pro-life Christians outside the Planned Parenthood clinic by tossing, out the window of her speeding BMW, a flaming improvised explosive device (a molotov cocktail) at the group as they prayed.  Police are NOT investigating this as a "hate crime."

An arrest affidavit states that members of Texas Alliance for Life were praying near the South Austin facility when a woman in an SUV tossed a "flaming item" out of the window.

Police found a fuel additive bottle and a rolled-up paper towel used as a wick. Investigators said that one of the women praying stomped out a small fire.

Witnesses reported a partial license plate to police, who found the SUV nearby. Toney initially denied involvement but then told police she threw a bottle that "might" have been smoldering.

From "Affidavit: Woman, 52, threw Molotov cocktail at prayer group outside Austin Planned Parenthood" by Madalyn Mendoza, San Antonio Express-News 3/25/15

According to an arrest affidavit, 52-year-old Melanie Maria Toney threw the device, “a bottle filled with a flammable substance and a wick material that is then lit so as to ignite when it contacts an object,” out the passenger window of her BMW while passing the clinic on 201 East Ben White Boulevard.

One of the two protesters reportedly stomped out the fire created by the device and quickly pulled out the wick to prevent the fire from touching the contents of the container, a Gumout Fuel Additive bottle.

Gumout is a “ignitable liquid that could ignite if it comes in contact with an ignition source such as a flame or burning wick,” said Detective Jesse Carrillo, who is assigned to the bomb squad, in the affadavit. “[…] In this case the gum out did not ignite due to the fact that it landed in a soft, grass area.”

Toney is currently facing the charge of aggravated Assault, a second-degree felony, but the charges could have been more severe if the device ignited.

Protester Ruth Allwein with the Texas Alliance for Life told police she thought she was targeted, the arrest affidavit said.

Allwein had been praying in a grassy area in front of Planned Parenthood when she saw a white vehicle driven by a woman slow down, the affidavit said.

The driver threw the bottle out of the car window and it landed on the ground next to Allwein, the affidavit said. Allwein told police her heart was racing as she stomped out the fire the bottle had caused and pulled out a wick to make sure the flame did not ignite the liquid in the bottle, the affidavit said.

Another witness said it appeared that the flaming bottle was thrown directly at two anti-abortion protesters near the Planned Parenthood facility, the affidavit said. The witness was pulling out of a driveway when she saw the bottle thrown from a BMW SUV, the affidavit said.

At the Weasel Zippers blog, a witness list was posted of whose who spoke in support of abortion during [state Rep. Wendy] Davis’ fight at the [Texas] legislature.

Listed was Melanie Toney, “Registered Nurse (also providing written testimony).”

She describes herself as mostly emergency room nurse for 23 years, and said, “Unwanted pregnancy occurs in victims of rape from the ages of 9 to 90.”

“Rape is a violent crime and the majority of the victims are physically abused as well,” she said, adding that women are killing themselves over an “unwanted pregnancies.”

Atheists Force Michigan Schools to Ban Christians

The Michigan Association of Civil Rights Activists (MACRA) has recently successfully intimidated several school districts into eliminating accommodations of parents, clergy or any citizen intending to mention Christianity, from meeting with students at schools during free time anywhere on campus, including in vehicles in the parking lot. At one school, one-third of all students were banned from voluntarily participating in Christian discussion in the gym during lunch time.

The Michigan Association of Civil Rights Activists says Fremont Public Schools has agreed to end monthly afternoon Bible study sessions at Daisy Brook Elementary School. Superintendent Ken Haggart told the group that clergy will no longer be allowed to offer or conduct religious instruction classes on school grounds.

The civil rights association had complained that the sessions violated a law banning religious activities on school property during school hours.

The civil rights association says it took action on behalf of concerned parents.

The district agreed to end monthly "Release Bible Time" sessions that had been held in the gymnasium of Daisy Brook Elementary School from noon to 1 p.m. by the Rev. John Perkins, according to a press release from the Michigan Association of Civil Rights Activists.

MACRA last year lodged similar complaints against lunchtime religious activities at Fruitport Middle School and Grand Haven's White Pines Intermediate School. Both schools have ended that practice.

In a letter to MACRA, Fremont Superintendent Ken Haggart said that "all clergy will have been permanently banned from Fremont Public Schools and ... no organized religious activities will again take place on school property while school is in session, if organized and run by adults."

The Michigan Association of Civil Rights Activists said Wednesday, March 18, it took action on behalf of concerned parents with children attending Cross Creek Charter Academy. The K-8 school, 7701 Kalamazoo Ave. SE, is managed by National Heritage Academies.

In February, [MACRA's Mitch] Kahle also complained to Hudsonville Public Schools that it was inappropriately allowing students to attend a Bible Club in a recreational vehicle in the parking lot during lunch hour.

Cross Creek Principal Joe Nieuwkoop said the academy allowing the clubs to utilize school space during recess was not to support a particular church or religion or to violate the Establishment Clause of the United States Constitution, according to his March 13 response to Kahle's complaint. He said the adults were not school employees.

"As such, student religious groups or gatherings led by adults will not be allowed to hold meetings during school and/or instructional hours. However, students may organize prayer groups, religious clubs, and gatherings before or after school to the same extent that students are permitted to organize other non-curricular student activities groups."

Scott Smith, director of human resources, said a representative of Michigan Association of Civil Rights Activists alerted the district that it was inappropriately allowing students to attend a Bible Club in a recreational vehicle in the parking lot during lunch hour. State law prohibits ministry meetings on-campus during the school day.

Smith said the district discontinued the practice and contacted Bible Club Ministries International-Western Michigan, which as provided the instruction for years, to let them know of the policy change.

Mitch Kahle, who led a drive against a cross on city property in Grand Haven, contacted the district after a parent complaint to the civil rights group, Smith said. The district was informed that the violations were occurring at multiple elementaries, including the South, Park and Bauer buildings. Kahle could not be reached for comment Friday.

After-school bible clubs continue to meet at Forest Grove, Jamestown and Georgetown elementaries.

Superintendent Ken Haggart spoke with WZZM 13 Wednesday regarding an earlier statement he gave to the Michigan Association of Civil Rights Activists. In that earlier statement, Haggart had said all clergy were permanently banned from Fremont Public Schools and no organized religious activities will be allowed on school property while school is in session.

Haggart tells WZZM 13 News he later sent this second email to MACRA, clarifying the school's policy:

"I wanted to let you know as well that Fremont Public Schools neither encourages nor discourages participation in any religious program. By saying 'clergy are banned' we are referring to the offering or conducting of religious instruction classes. In the event of school tragedies, or needed counseling, or for clergy who have children attending FPS, or other use of the facilities, they are of course welcome to visit our schools."

. . . Haggart says the school has returned to its original arrangement in which students are transported off campus to local churches for Bible study. Kahle says the superintendent tells him a local church will be providing transportation, not the school district.

. . . He says one out of every three children in the elementary school is involved in Bible study, for a total of approximately 150 children. Those children are now split into two groups, which are transported to churches on two separate weeks once a month.

He also held a large sign with a graphic image of an undeveloped [aborted] fetus.

“We bring the graphic images out to show because people do this and nobody looks these babies in the eye,” Lori Mayberry, an advocate for abolishing abortion, told the Emerald.

Several students surrounded three anti-abortion activists at the intersection of 13th Avenue and University Street on Tuesday before attempting to destroy a graphic poster one of the men was holding in protest.

History major Allison Rutledge was the first to damage the anti-abortion activist’s poster. She stood on it and claimed that the activist didn’t have a right to display the graphic imagery . . . [and] is later seen leading a chant in order to get the anti-abortion activist to leave University of Oregon property.

She called the incident a tussle before saying that she felt emotionally threatened by the anti-abortion activist’s sign.

“This is our campus and we don’t want it — we don’t want you and your ugliness,” another unidentified woman said in the video.

The Oregon Supreme Court in 1984 ruled that any censorship of material considered obscene is unconstitutional.

The police officer that arrived at the scene, John Loos, originally said the signs need to be taken down but later realized they didn’t violate school policy or the constitution. Initially, he said, “You are breaking the rules of this institution. You are not breaking any laws in my opinion. This is a privately owned institution, even though it’s a public school. If it’s considered to be demeaning or anything like that, it’s not allowed.”

He added, “You’re breaking an ASUO rule — I don’t know the rule off the top of my head. I’m not picking sides here. What I’m trying to do is work a compromise so that these two groups could be doing this all day without having a fight.”

The confrontation between the students and the demonstrators begins about 14 minutes into the 19-minute video. After a student stood on and ripped an anti-abortion sign, a crowd of students surrounded the protestors, shouting at them and chanting “get off our campus.”

The police officer’s justification for telling the activist to put away his sign or leave is so strange – it violates student government rules? – that eventually his sergeant came over and rebuked him, and the university police promised its officers will be “reminded” to respect speech rights on campus.

The Young Americans for Liberty leaders who recorded the hubbub wrote a separate editorial berating the abortion-rights crowd as “childish” for harassing the lead protester and calling the cops on him. . . .

Florida Underground Churches Exposed in City Sting

The City of Lake Worth, Florida has dispatched undercover agents to attend gatherings of citizens suspected of engaging in unlicensed Christian worship services.

“I walked back to the Coffee Bar and was able to visualize, in my opinion what appeared to be a ministry in progress. . . . People holding what appeared to be bibles or religious books as one had a cross on it. . . . I was approached by an unknown man with a cross around his neck.”

At the Common Ground Coffee Bar in Lake Worth, Pastor Mike Olive--the owner--holds two religious services on Sundays that he says city officials are trying to stop.

He says a notice was sent to his landlord that the coffee bar doesn't have the permits to operate as a religious institution. Pastor Mike Olive said, “We had one gentleman come in from the city wearing a hoodie, and he was hiding the camera in the pockets of his hoodie.”

The nearby First Baptist Church paid the almost $500 inspection and use of occupancy fees. CBS12 asked city councilmember Christopher McVoy if this is a business tax? McVoy responded, “I can't tell you the exact answer on that. It's not a business tax, but there will be a fee involved.” CBS12 investigated if this is in line with other municipalities. In the Village of North Palm Beach, churches are exempt from a business tax and are subjected to a $50-to-$75 fire inspection fee.

In the letter [to City Manager Michael Bornstein] from Liberty Counsel, attorney Richard Mast refers to the city’s “egregious treatment” of Common Ground Church.

“The City has inexplicably targeted CG Church for investigation, despite the fact that CG Church has made no secret of its weekly worship and other meetings since the Coffee Bar opened in November 2014 (and prior thereto, when CG Church met for six months at the same location run by the previous secular coffee bar).”

The letter [from the City to the property owner], Mast writes, cites the church’s lack of a “license,” requests that the “violation” be corrected by March 2 or a hearing would be held April 30 before the Special Magistrate and also threatens the property owner with fines of $200-$500 a day and potential foreclosure action if the property owner does not “correct” the violation.

The [Liberty Counsel] letter specifically refers to Commissioner Andy Amoroso, who owns a newsstand and gay pornography shop on Lake Avenue, and his conversation a few weeks back with Pastor Mike Olive, in which Olive says Amoroso pointed at him and said, of the coffee bar: “You better not have a church there. That better not be a church.”

Mark Woods, the manager of the city’s Code Compliance Department, told the Tribune last week that the code action regarding Common Grounds Coffee Bar was the result of an anonymous complaint. William Waters [who oversees the building and code compliance departments] told the Tribune last week that the code compliance officer was sent to investigate the coffee shop because of “several” anonymous complaints. E-mails obtained by the Tribune in a public records request show that William Waters was alerting staff about the church in September, well before the coffee shop opened, writing, “We need to look into the church that is growing down the street along the east side of the South J Street between Lake and 1st” and stating that “a lot of downtown people” are concerned about it.

Pastor Mike Olive told me there had not been any problems until early last month, when he had an encounter with Andy Amoroso, a city commissioner.

“After we opened up the coffee bar and started doing services, I heard that he told people we were anti-gay,” Olive said. “So I went to his shop to ask him about that. . . . He pointed at me and said, ‘Listen, you better not have a church down there.”

“Government employees are public servants and prohibited by the Constitution from inhibiting religious freedom,” said Mat Staver, founder of the religious liberty law firm Liberty Counsel. “That is a far cry from sneaking around and into a church and acting like KGB agents.”

Staver is calling on city leaders to immediately rescind the business license mandate on churches. He is also representing Common Ground Church, the congregation that was targeted by the city’s investigator.

Staver said the city’s actions violate the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, the Florida Constitution, the Florida Religious Freedom Restoration Act and the federal Religious Land Uses and Institutionalized Persons Act.

Lake Worth officials are denying claims they threatened local churches with fines and foreclosures if they did not possess business licenses.

A letter to City Manager Michael Bornstein by the Orlando-based non-profit Liberty Counsel on behalf of Common Ground Church referenced the city's request for a business license "by March 2, 2015, or a hearing would be held April 30, 2015 before the Special Magistrate."


Now the city says Common Ground Church does not require a "business license" -- which requires payment of a business tax from which churches are exempt -- and that the congregation only needs a use and occupancy (U&O) certificate (for "safety purposes") apart from that of the 2,500 square foot coffee bar.

City Manager, Mike Bornstein, told Raw Story the dispute apparently was a misunderstanding and produced a letter from the city to Olive relaying that information.

Virginia School Slow-walks Pro-life Club Approval

Lawyers have informed Principal Larry Marks of Courtland High School in Spotsylvania County that the inordinate delay in approval of senior student Madison Sutherland's “Students for Life” club would result in legal action against the school.

“By denying Maddie’s pro-life group on the grounds that it is not tied to the school’s curriculum, while allowing other non-curricular groups such as an equestrian club and lacrosse club, Courtland High School is violating their students’ First Amendment rights.”

Kristen Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America expressed concern over what she sees as a deliberate attack on the pro-life movement. “It is unfortunate that many pro-life high school students have faced resistance from hostile school administrators,” Hawkins said.

As for Sutherland, she will continue pushing her campus group to be recognized. “Abortion is the greatest violation of human rights in our time and I believe the pro-life message deserves a voice at my school,” she declared.

The anti-abortion club application “is in the review process” and “will be considered in the same manner as other applications for student organizations,” the [school official's] statement said.

Marks turned down an initial application for the club in a letter Oct. 6, writing that the group did not appear to “bear a clear relationship to the regular school curriculum” as required by the division’s policies. The principal also noted that the student had not provided all of the required information in the application, namely the group’s bylaws and a description of its relationship to the curriculum.

Sutherland resubmitted the application Oct. 24 but has not received a formal response, according to a press release from the anti-abortion organization Students for Life of America. . . .

George Mason University law professor Joyce Malcolm said the principal has “no business” denying an anti-abortion club while recognizing other issue groups such as an environmental club. “I think it’s unfortunate that our schools have become … single-minded,” she said. “Certain views are OK, and other views we don’t even want to hear.”

California Boots Christian Clubs Across the State

California has “de-recognized” any and all organizations that hold Biblical beliefs from every campus in the state system of universities that includes 447,000 students.  According to California state law, officially recognized clubs must allow anyone and everyone to be eligible to hold LEADERSHIP positions in the club — apparently including all unrepentant drunkards, slanderers, swindlers, revilers, thieves, adulterers, as well as the greedy, the sexually immoral and those who advocate sexual deviancy.

“For an organization to be recognized, they must sign a general nondiscrimination policy. We have engaged with [InterVarsity Christian Fellowship] for the better part of a year and informed them they would have to sign a general nondiscrimination statement. They have not.”

A well-established international Christian student group is being denied recognition at almost two dozen California college campuses because it requires leaders to adhere to Christian beliefs, effectively closing its leadership ranks to non-Christians and gays.

California State University, which has 23 campuses, is “de-recognizing” local chapters of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship [IVCF], an evangelical Christian group with 860 chapters in the United States. The university system says InterVarsity’s leadership policy conflicts with its state-mandated nondiscrimination policy requiring membership and leadership in all official student groups be open to all.

Some campuses have reached an agreement with InterVarsity that permit chapters to remain on individual campuses. Ohio State University rewrote its student organization registration guidelines to read, “A student organization formed to foster or affirm the sincerely held religious beliefs of its members may adopt eligibility criteria for its Student Officers that are consistent with those beliefs.”

Other religiously oriented student groups have signed nondiscrimination policies where required, including Jewish, Catholic, mainline Protestant and Muslim groups. Hillel, the largest Jewish student organization, reports some local chapters have elected non-Jews to some posts.

“This new CSU policy does not allow us to require that our leaders be Christian,” InterVarsity said in an article addressing California State University System policy conflict with InterVarsity's Doctrinal Basis.

“[W]hile we applaud inclusivity, we believe that faith-based communities like ours can only be led by people who clearly affirm historic Christian doctrine,” the organization wrote.

The CSU system has previously granted exemptions for sororities and fraternities that discriminate on the basis of gender, an exemption that has IVCF requesting “similar provision[s] for creedal communities.”

Atheists Attack Christian Kids Club: Portland, OR

The 75-year-old nationwide Good News Clubs, organizing to hold after-school meetings in Portland, Oregon, is facing resistance from the leader of the local chapter of the Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation and from "hundreds of residents" who say that allowing "fundamentalist Christian extremists" to teach Bible lessons saying "all have sinned" must not be tolerated.

Missouri-based Child Evangelism Fellowship has already launched Good News Clubs in roughly 4,300 schools nationwide, said program manager John Luck. Now organizers of the religious group want to expand to Portland and its suburbs.

This year, Good News Across America is hosting summer Bible schools in partnership with 30 churches in the Portland region. Each church will run a separate program the week of July 21 and, if they have enough volunteers, work to establish a Good News Club at a nearby school in the fall.

There are already 94 Good News Clubs elsewhere in Oregon that meet on public school campuses, said Tony Villanueva, the fellowship's assistant state director.

According to a 2001 U.S. Supreme Court ruling, the Good News Club has the same right to meet in public schools as non-religious educational or recreational clubs, such as the Boy Scouts.

Christine Miles, spokeswoman for Portland Public Schools, said the Good News Club won't be treated any differently than non-religious groups. . . .

Archbishop Rebuts Pelosi's Government-run Church

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Democrat from San Francisco and self-proclaimed Catholic, jettisoned her typical separation-of-church-and-state rhetoric and told the Archbishop of San Francisco, Salvatore Cordileone, that he should not participate in this week's March for Marriage in D.C. -- the "venom masquerading as virtue" in her words. In response, Cordileone told Pelosi he WILL join the march because it's in line with Church teaching.

Pelosi, who is one of the country's most powerful Catholic politicians, made a passionate appeal to the archbishop in a letter obtained by The Chronicle not to participate in the National Organization for Marriage's June 19 march on the Supreme Court in Washington.

Invoking the [misinterpreted] words of Pope Francis with regard to gays and lesbians, she wrote, "If someone is gay and is searching for the Lord and has good will, then who am I to judge him?"

The San Francisco Democratic leader is the most influential in a parade of public figures who have come forward to protest the San Francisco archbishop's participation in an event that is also backed by the Family Research Council. Critics have called the organizers "hate groups" that are targeting gays and lesbians.

Last week, San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee and Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, along with a host of Bay Area religious leaders, sent a joint letter to Cordileone protesting his plans to attend the march.

Cordileone has nevertheless become a national leader in the religious movement against gay marriage. He heads the Subcommittee for the Promotion and Defense of Marriage for the politically powerful U.S. Conference of Bishops and was instrumental in raising $1.5 million to get Prop. 8, which banned same-sex marriage, on the California ballot in 2008.

San Francisco's Roman Catholic archbishop told critics who have assailed his decision to speak Thursday at the March for Marriage in Washington, D.C., that the event is not an attack on gays and lesbians.

Cordileone addressed [his rebuttal] letter to Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee and several other politicians and gay rights groups. They called on Cordileone last week not to attend the march, noting that its sponsors include the National Organization for Marriage and the Family Research Council, which they said were among "the national's most virulently anti-LGBT organizations."

March organizers hope to draw thousands of supporters of heterosexual-only marriage to the capital. Cordileone and former GOP presidential candidates Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum are billed as the star speakers.

[The principle of] the intrinsic human dignity of all people, irrespective of their stage and condition in life . . . requires us to respect and protect each and every member of the human family, from the precious child in the womb to the frail elderly person nearing death.  It also requires me, as a bishop, to proclaim the truth—the whole truth—about the human person and God’s will for our flourishing.  I must do that in season and out of season, even when truths that it is my duty to uphold and teach are unpopular, including especially the truth about marriage as the conjugal union of husband and wife.  That is what will be doing on June 19th.

The March for Marriage is not “anti-LGBT” (as some have described it); it is not anti-anyone or anti-anything.  Rather, it is a pro-marriage March.  The latter does not imply the former. Rather, it affirms the great good of bringing the two halves of humanity together so that a man and a woman may bond with each other and with any children who come from their union.  This is precisely the vision promoted by Pope Francis, who recently said, “We must reaffirm the right of children to grow up in a family with a father and mother.” Rest assured that if the point of this event were to single out a group of individuals and target them for hatred, I most certainly would not be there.

While I cannot go into all of the details here of your allegations against the sponsors of this event and scheduled speakers, I do know that at least some of what you say is based on misinterpretation or is simply factually incorrect. . . . many conclusions are being drawn about those involved in the March for Marriage based on false impressions.

. . . there is plenty of offensive rhetoric . . . for those who support the conjugal understanding of marriage, [but] the attacks have not stopped at rhetoric.  Simply for taking a stand for marriage as it has been understood in every human society for millennia, people have lost their jobs, lost their livelihoods, and have suffered other types of retribution, including physical violence. . . . such as, most notably, the attempted gunning down of those who work in the offices of the Family Research Council . . .

. . . When all is said and done, then, there is only one thing that I would ask of you more than anything else: before you judge us, get to know us.

Christian College Clubs Illegal in Maine & Calif.

Education officials across America, including at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, are refusing to fully recognize Christian organizations, such as Intervarsity Christian Fellowship that requires leaders to adhere to Biblical beliefs -- a violation of state law, officials say.  Colleges and universities are insisting that students who advocate deviant sexual behavior be included in the Christian organization leadership.

After this summer, the Bowdoin Christian Fellowship will no longer be recognized by the college.

Similar conflicts are playing out on a handful of campuses around the country, driven by the universities’ desire to rid their campuses of bias, particularly against gay men and lesbians, but also, in the eyes of evangelicals, fueled by a discomfort in academia with conservative forms of Christianity. The universities have been emboldened to regulate religious groups by a Supreme Court ruling in 2010 that found it was constitutional for a public law school in California to deny recognition to a Christian student group that excluded gays.

At Cal State, the nation’s largest university system with nearly 450,000 students on 23 campuses, the chancellor is preparing this summer to withdraw official recognition from evangelical groups that are refusing to pledge not to discriminate on the basis of religion in the selection of their leaders. And at Vanderbilt, more than a dozen groups, most of them evangelical but one of them Catholic, have already lost their official standing over the same issue; one Christian group balked after a university official asked the students to cut the words “personal commitment to Jesus Christ” from their list of qualifications for leadership.

The evangelical groups say they . . . welcome anyone to participate in their activities, including gay men and lesbians, as well as nonbelievers, seekers and adherents of other faiths. A Chico State University club faces losing recognition because the California State University system says it discriminates.

The Intervarsity Christian Fellowship is an Evangelical Christian group with a club constitution that requires its leaders to sign a doctrinal statement of faith. According to an executive order from the university system in 2011, no university-recognized organization may discriminate based on, "race, religion, national origin, ethnicity, color, age, gender, marital status, citizenship, sexual orientation, or disability."

Club leaders said it isn't discriminating, since anyone, no matter their religious beliefs or sexual orientation, can be a member. The problem is that student leaders are asked to sign a statement that says they believe in the divinity of the Jesus Christ, the Bible and the Holy Trinity.

Greg Jao, national field director for the Northeast InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, told The Christian Post that college institutions such as California State University (Cal State), the largest university system in the U.S., that are prepared to withdraw recognition from certain evangelical clubs this summer, are an example of a nation at a crossroads.

"You can no longer ignore the fact that multiple universities are doing this and it's a sustained trend rather than one administrator acting oddly," Jao told CP.

He added, "InterVarsity welcomes all students to our meetings, programs, and events, and we think by and large the non-discrimination policies are actually good things for the universities, just taken to an illogical extreme. I don't think there is a large conspiracy working against religious groups, but I do think it shows the bankruptcy of the current tolerance conversation."

Bowdoin spokesman Scott Hood told the Bangor Daily News on Wednesday that the college had “taken no steps to ‘unrecognize’ Bowdoin Christian Fellowship. The error — it’s semantics, I suppose — is that they reported that we have cut their recognition.”

In February, The Bowdoin Orient reported that Robert and Sim Gregory, who served as volunteer advisers to the Bowdoin Christian Fellowship for nearly a decade, declined to sign a new volunteer agreement introduced by the college last fall that requires volunteers to comply with college policies, including prohibiting discrimination based on race, religion, sex or sexual orientation, among other factors.

On Wednesday, Robert Gregory would say only, “We’ll honor the college request. We’re going to do our work off campus if that’s what they want.”

In an interview with The Christian Post Friday, Robert Gregory, an attorney and volunteer adviser from Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, said Bowdoin officials told them using biblical standards to select leaders of their Christian group would be a violation of state law.

"We were told that state law would override biblical standards of leadership so the non-discrimination policy prohibited the Bowdoin Christian Fellowship and Intervarsity from discrimination from any student," said Gregory. "For example, whether they were Christian, whether they were serious about following Christian patterns of belief and practice as it related to sexuality and other matters, that there could be no discrimination made."

"This fellowship doesn't have formal admissions standards. These are students who meet on a regular basis and invite all of the students who come," said Gregory. "Students who lead, however, have to sign a charter that expects them to follow a set of Christian behavior."

When asked why a homosexual would want to join a Christian group and continue with that lifestyle knowing that orthodox Christianity does not support homosexuality, Hood said he didn't know but Bowdoin still maintains homosexuals should have the right to join and compete to lead Christian groups if they wished.
