Student Walk-out vs Gay Agenda: N. Carolina Prayer

Christian students at East Wilkes High School in Ronda, North Carolina walked out to demonstrate God's disapproval of the Gay Agenda "Day of Silence" — when public schools across America indoctrinate students with deviant sexual behavior.
“If they can press up on the young people in our schools to be quiet and be silenced for a whole day of school, surely to God, we as God’s people can lift up our voices to an almighty God.”
-- Rev. Curtis Ponder, Maple Springs Baptist Church, Ronda, NC

“We’ve got slammed for hating on homosexuals and that’s not true, God loves everyone. We think homosexuality is wrong, which in our beliefs, it is. But, it’s not the people, it’s the lifestyle.”

About 100 people joined in, on the outskirts of the East Wilkes High School campus in Ronda, including students from the school.

“A gang of youth that walked out of class, walked out of school, to show their support and to show their love of their God,” said Curtis Ponder, pastor of the Maple Springs Baptist Church in Ronda.

The discussion and prayer continued for about 15 minutes, with Ponder saying that was the amount of time allotted to the students by East Wilkes Principal Jodi Weatherman.

“My heart and my intentions of being here today is not controversial, it’s not a show of anything mean, anything lewd,” Ponder said.

From "Parents Threaten 'Walk Out' Over Middle School's LGBT 'Acceptance Week'" by Samuel Smith, Christian Post Reporter 4/4/16

Parents at Windmere Ranch Middle School in San Ramon, California [a suburb of San Francisco], have launched an online petition against the school's LGBT acceptance week, which is scheduled to begin Monday, April 11.

The petition adds that the parents "are not against the LGBTQ" but there are a number of concerns with the acceptance week that have not been addressed.

The petition further explains that the parents want to be assured that the lessons being taught during LGBT acceptance week will not include "condemnation for differing religious values or practices."

The parents fear that the school will use LGBT acceptance week as an outlet to indoctrinate their children.

Evangelist Wins Lawsuit vs. San Fran. Police, ESPN

Gino Emmerich and a Christian law firm will be paid $10,000 because Emmerich was forced by San Francisco police and sports TV outlet ESPN to cease holding a “John 3:16” sign outside of the Giants ballpark in July 2014.  Emmerich was singled out for holding a Christian sign among a plethora of signs and expressions of free speech by others in a crowd.

A traveling minister who carried his “John 3:16” sign to Willie Mays Plaza at AT&T Park before a Giants game, and said he was told to leave or face arrest, has settled his lawsuit for $10,000.

Gino Emmerich sued the city of San Francisco, but the settlement funds — $2,500 to Emmerich and $7,500 to his lawyer — will come from ESPN, which was filming the pregame activities and hired city police to keep order, City Attorney Dennis Herrera’s office said Tuesday. As part of the settlement, the city agreed to review the status of the plaza and the extent of the public’s right to carry signs or express opinions there.

. . . an ESPN producer walked up with four uniformed police officers and told [Emmerich] he would be arrested if he displayed his sign.

After the producer left, Emmerich said he nevertheless held the sign up in front of an ESPN camera. One of the officers then grabbed him from behind and moved him out of camera range, where police issued another arrest warning and let him go. All the while, Emmerich said, fans were in the plaza, some displaying other types of signs, though none with religious messages.

A settlement has been reached in a First Amendment lawsuit filed by The Rutherford Institute against police officers who allegedly intimidated and threatened to arrest a man who was lawfully and peacefully exercising his First Amendment rights in the Willie Mays Plaza prior to a Giants v. Dodgers game by holding up a “John 3:16” religious sign in the public plaza in front of the San Francisco Giants ballpark. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California on behalf of Gino Emmerich, alleged that police officers violated Emmerich’s right to free speech and assembly when they forcefully removed him from Willie Mays Plaza, surrounded him and threatened him with arrest if he did not cease displaying his “John 3:16” sign. Under the settlement agreement, the City and County of San Francisco have agreed to conduct an investigation about the status of Willie Mays Plaza in connection with the rights of citizens to exercise their First Amendment rights there.

On Sunday, July 27, 2014, prior to the start of a Giants v. Dodgers baseball game, Gino Emmerich arrived at Willie Mays Plaza carrying a “John 3:16” sign, a religious reference to a central tenet of Christianity. Other people were in the plaza, some displaying signs and otherwise communicating messages. Also in the plaza was a makeshift broadcast booth put together for a live broadcast and discussion of the Giants v. Dodgers game for ESPN SportsCenter. . . . Emmerich stationed himself in view of the camera, behind the commentators, and held up his John 3:16 sign. While Emmerich was holding up his sign, a police officer grabbed him from behind by his shirt and neck and moved him out of the view of the camera. Once Emmerich was clear of the cameras, he was surrounded by four police officers and warned, “If you go over there and hold that sign again, we will arrest you and the sergeant will come over here and decide where we are going to take you.” Emmerich then left the plaza as to avoid the possibility of arrest and turned to The Rutherford Institute for help.

“Much of what used to be great about America—especially as it pertains to our love of freedom and our commitment to First Amendment activities—has been overshadowed by a greater desire for security and an inclination towards political correctness,” said John W. Whitehead, president of The Rutherford Institute and author of Battlefield America: The War on the American People. “That this incident, with its police intimidation tactics, overt discrimination and censorship, took place in a public plaza dedicated to Willie Mays, a legendary baseball player who lived through an era of police tactics, discrimination and censorship, is a powerful indictment of all that is wrong with America today.”

Feds Fire Pastor for Public Baptizing in Calif.

Roger Holly, a Baptist minister, was fired from his job as maintenance worker at the San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park because he unnoticeably baptized a park visitor in the Pacific Ocean during lunch.  Holly has since filed a federal lawsuit against the Department of the Interior for being fired by the National Park Service, and for being told not to discuss religion with the public and being restricted from reading his Bible at lunchtime.

Holly says no other members of the public were involved or raised an issue about the baptism. He claims that one of his former coworkers, a Native American woman, is allowed to display spiritually symbolic feathers in her Park Service vehicle, but his supervisor, defendant Robert Kier, interrogated him about the baptism.

ACLU Forces Catholic Hospital To Sterilize Woman

Mercy Medical Center in San Francisco refused the request of a patient to be sterilized, so the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) threatened to sue, and the Catholic hospital acquiesced, in spite of its policy to refuse abortions, in vitro fertilization, and other unnatural procedures.
"While we’re grateful Mercy Medical has agreed to provide medical care in this instance for Ms. Miller, the reality remains that there is a clear conflict between the best interests of patients and the directives of the Catholic hospital system.”
-- Elizabeth Gill, senior attorney at the ACLU of Northern California
For background, read California Forces Catholics to Fund Abortion, ACLU Celebrates and also read ACLU Sues Bishops for Pro-life Beliefs and Practice as well as ACLU Tells Feds: We'll Force Abortion on Catholic Hospitals

-- From "ACLU Forces Catholic Hospital To Sterilize Woman" by Blake Neff, Reporter, Daily Caller 8/26/15

[Patient Rachel] Miller, who says without Mercy’s cooperation she would have to travel 160 miles to receive the procedure, went to the ACLU for help. Last week the ACLU sent a letter to Mercy threatening a lawsuit, arguing that by denying Miller’s tubal ligation they were engaging in sex discrimination by refusing to provide “pregnancy-related care.”

In a post on the group’s website, ACLU attorney Elizabeth Gill said she’s happy the hospital will comply with Miller’s request, but that the group won’t be satisfied until all hospitals are forced to stop following Catholic doctrine.

This isn’t the first time the ACLU has targeted Catholic hospitals. In 2013, the organization sued the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops over its guidelines barring doctors from discussing abortion as a potential option with patients. That lawsuit was dismissed last month.

From "Want Your Tubes Tied At A Catholic Hospital? Try Threatening To Sue." by Samantha Lachman, Staff Reporter, The Huffington Post 8/25/15

Mercy Medical Center is owned by the San Francisco-based Dignity Health, California's largest private health care network and the fifth-largest in the nation. In April, the hospital said it wouldn't allow patient Rachel Miller to receive a tubal ligation after her caesarean section, which is set to take place next month. The hospital cited the church's Ethical and Religious Directives, which prohibit "inherently evil" reproductive health care procedures like sterilization.

Miller, an attorney who lives in Redding, California, teamed up with the ACLU to protest the decision, which the hospital had communicated to her doctor. The ACLU argued in a letter to Dignity Health that the hospital was discriminating on the basis of sex by denying Miller a tubal ligation, and elevating "theological tenets over patient health."

Asked whether the decision to allow Miller to get a tubal ligation would apply to future cases, a hospital spokeswoman wrote in an email to HuffPost that it "has always and will continue" to operate according to the Catholic church's directives.

The ACLU has targeted Catholic health institutions before for not informing patients in dire medical circumstances that abortion was an option, or for telling doctors they may not discuss abortion with their patients. Health care providers and reproductive rights advocates have increasingly expressed concerns about the practices and procedures of Catholic hospitals, which provide 15 percent of the nation's hospital beds.

Teenage 'Boy' Harvests Eggs to be Mother & 'Father'

18-year-old Nicole Carman has her heart set on being a mother, but first she plans to pretend to be a man — permanently!  Therefore, before she has her healthy ovaries and uterus ripped from her body, she is undergoing medical procedures to extract her eggs and freeze them so, at some time in the future, some other woman can serve as surrogate mother while "Cole" Carman will pretend to be the father (but actually will be the mother).
As reported:
Because Carman was so certain fatherhood was in his future, he researched the procedure, talked to his doctors and parents about it, and finally decided to go ahead.

An 18-year-old transgender man shared on Saturday his story of freezing his eggs prior to beginning hormone therapy, one of the first transgender teens to have done so, according to his doctor.

In a profile in People, Cole Carman said his doctor had introduced the possibility of freezing his eggs in January, when he was about to start testosterone therapy following his double mastectomy. “I already knew I wanted kids, so to say yes and make that decision was a no-brainer,” he said.

From "Meet 18-Year-Old Cole Carman, One of the First Transgender Teens to Freeze Eggs Before Transitioning" by Christina Butan, People Magazine

The teen, who hails from the San Francisco area, had first started looking into transgender issues when he was 12, but didn't really understand what it meant to be transgender. He came to a better understanding of the definition last year.

[Carman's] parents funded the entire procedure, which cost about $13,000. Carman advises other teens in his situation to think very carefully about how personally important it is to have biological children.

"It's a lot of money and there are other ways," he said. "You should think, how important would it be that your child is related to you? That would be the biggest factor to play in into making the decision."

"It's a journey and an emotional roller coaster ride," [Carman's adoptive mother] C.J. said. "But I think it's really important for parents to understand that [the surgeries] aren't something that's a choice, they're a necessity. Love your child, be open minded and get information."

From "Teen Is Among the First in the Country to Freeze Eggs Before Transitioning" by Hannah Orenstein, Seventeen Magazine 7/29/15

The issue is particularly personal for Cole, who was adopted at five and half weeks old by a couple who couldn't have biological children.

"My husband and I have been really supportive of her and it seemed like a very important issue because, you know, who doesn't want children that are part of them?" Cole's mother C.J. told  NBC Bay Area. "My husband and I could never have children so I understand how that feels."

The procedure was successful, and Cole is optimistic for the future. He's heading off to college in the fall and wants to one day be an advocate for LGBT rights. He is now taking weekly testosterone injections and recently underwent top surgery.

Fertility expert Dr. Aimee Eyvazzadeh, who treated Cole, says that he is among the first trans teens in the country to freeze his eggs before undergoing male hormone replacement therapy. The timing is important because once Cole began taking testosterone, his ovaries began shutting down, making it difficult to harvest eggs in the future.

From "Transgender Teen, 18, Undergoes Rare Surgery So He Can Be a Dad One Day" by Esther Crain, Writer, Yahoo Parenting 7/30/15

When 18-year-old Cole Carman made the decision to transition from female to male late last year, the San Francisco-area teen knew that he would be in for major surgery and hormone therapy.

That didn’t stop Carman, a recent high school grad set to start college in the fall, from signing on for another potentially risky medical procedure: egg retrieval. It’s a fairly routine (yet still major) surgery, typically undertaken by egg donors and some women undergoing in-vitro fertilization.

“Some transgender people who realized after gender reassignment surgery that they wanted kids of their own had no chance, because they already had their reproductive organs removed,” Dr. Aimee Eyvazzadeh, a fertility specialist in San Ramon, Calif., told Yahoo Parenting.

“Others who didn’t have ‘bottom’ [sex-reassignment] surgery still had difficulty, because after years of testosterone therapy, their ovaries would shut down and would not reawaken to create any viable eggs, or the eggs would be low quality,” she said.

Christian Prayer Outrages California City Council

Commissioners in Redwood City, near San Francisco, California, immediately suspended opening invocations at city council meetings after Pastor Stephen Converse of Grace Bible Church prayed to God Almighty for all citizens of the city and nation in a Biblical context regarding abortion and same-sex marriage.
“We pray for the leaders of this country and its leaders who have clearly turned from your ways, oh God.  We live in a society where the murder of human life in the womb has become commonplace and our country is being terrorized not by people from foreign lands but by the very people who are responsible to protect it. . . . Lord we know that no human has the authority to redefine morality, but we live in a country where the Supreme Court, this human court, has said that murder is not murder, marriage is not marriage, and family is not family.”

“And ensuring that the city council chambers remain a place that is safe for everybody,” Galisatus said.

In a written statement, Converse said, “It’s unfortunate that one simple prayer offered in good faith and concern for the moral welfare of our nation and community by a local pastor has garnered such heated criticism from the Redwood City Council.”

The pastor went on to say that he didn’t intend to offend anyone, but said sometimes the truth itself can be offensive.

“It’s unfortunate that a simple prayer has garnered such heated criticism from the council. I was invited there by them. In all honesty, I was addressing God, not man, based upon my own personal beliefs. I prayed for council and divine protection for our own police and firemen,” Converse said.

He considers the city’s act to suspend the invocations, however, as a “bit of an overreaction” but said he respects the decision.

'Husband' Impregnates Both 'Married' Lesbian Wives

A pair of lesbians and their common male lover of Oakland, California who were "married" as a "poly fidelitous triad" last summer say that society needs to accept their definition of family because “in all honesty we think having two moms and one dad is the perfect way to raise a child, in a home full of love,” said Melinda Phoenix—lesbian, mother, and wife (of both a woman and a man).
“Even sex is great as if one person is not feeling up for it, then there are two other people to choose from.”

Of course, having three parents in one bedroom does present some unique challenges. “We just need a bigger bed,” Dani [Phoenix] said. “We are all co-sleeping with the babies as well and at the moment the only way Jonathan [Stein] fits is if he lays horizontally at the bottom of the bed.”

-- From "Two Moms, One Dad: Parenting In a Polyamorous Family" by Rachel Bertsche, Writer, Yahoo! News 3/12/15

Melinda and Dani Phoenix became domestic partners in a 2010 California commitment ceremony, before gay marriage was legal in the state. A year later, the pair fell in love with a man, Jonathan Stein, and added him to their union in an unofficial marriage ceremony in 2014. Now Melinda and Dani are a polyamorous couple — both wives consider Jonathan their husband — and all three are in a romantic relationship.

Recently, the Oakland trio got two new additions to their family. In September 2014, Melinda gave birth to a son, Oliver, and one month later, Dani had a daughter, Ella Lynn; Jonathan is the father of each. “We just made sure we timed things correctly and prayed our wishes would come true,” Melinda said. “I found out I was pregnant on January 14th … and two weeks later we all let out a scream of pure delight when we found out Dani was expecting, too. It was just so special experiencing pregnancy with the woman I love going through it at the same time.”

Today, all three consider themselves parents to both Ella Lynn and Oliver.

Jonathan, Dani, and Melinda are a polyamorous family, which means that they all believe in having more than one partner.

The trio and their two children all live under the same roof, with all three parents sharing every aspect of parenthood, from nighttime feeds to diaper changes.

'It might seem strange to a lot of people, but to us it makes perfect sense,' Melinda, 28, who runs her own healing company, East-West Collaborative Health, told Daily Mail Online. 'We all love each other and it was our dream to fall pregnant at the same time.'

Until Dani met Melinda in 2008, Melinda had only been in monogamous relationships with men, while Dani had enjoyed relationships with both men and women.

'When Melinda first told me she was missing a man in her life I thought "Why aren't I enough?"' Dani confessed. 'But the more we spoke about it, the more I realized there could be huge advantages to having three of us in our marriage.

'The hard part was finding a man we could both fall in love with.'

Miraculously the girls didn't have to wait too long for their dream husband to come along.

. . . they’re sharing their story to raise awareness about polyamorous families and hope that some day these arrangements can be widely accepted and legally recognized. With children entering their picture, they feel gaining support from the community is more important than ever.

Polyamory is a term used to define people who love multiple partners at the same time. A polyamorous relationship can range from a married person with multiple love interests to an informal group marriage. Some engage in group sex while others have one-on-one sexual relationships with multiple partners.

Polygamy falls under the polyamory umbrella and refers to a structure with one man who dominates over two or more wives. In a polygamous relationship the wives don’t have an intimate relationship. The Stein-Phoenix clan is different because Melinda and Dani are romantically involved and all three partners are viewed as equals.

A 2009 Newsweek article reported that more than a half-million people prefer a more populous relationship over the traditional two-person one, but some researchers say the numbers could be much higher due to underreporting.

Calif. Wants Immoral Teachers in Catholic Schools

State and local lawmakers in the Archdiocese of San Francisco are calling on Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone to eliminate the morality clauses from teacher contracts or expect legal action against the Church, but the Archbishop says he won't back down.

The letter to Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone is signed by all eight state lawmakers who represent the areas served by archdiocese’s four Catholic high schools.

It’s in response to his decision to include a morality clause for teachers that tells them they must honor the church’s teachings, both on and off the job. The archbishop specifically cited opposition to abortion, contraception and homosexuality.

The lawmakers say the new rules, “conflict with settled areas of law and foment a discriminatory environment in the communities we serve.”

It goes on to say the clause, “strikes a divisive tone, which stands in stark contrast to the values that define the Bay Area and it’s history.”

From "Lawmakers urge S.F. archbishop to withdraw teacher morality clauses" by Lee Romney, Los Angeles Times 2/17/15

Cordileone has spurred protests with his addition to the [high school faculty] handbook --  which guides the nearly 500 school employees -- because it focuses almost exclusively on sexual morality in language many consider harsh.

It asks employees to "affirm and believe" that "adultery, masturbation, fornication, the viewing of pornography and homosexual relations" are "gravely evil." Artificial-reproductive technology, contraception and abortion are described similarly.

The "fundamental demands of justice," it continues, "require that the civil law preserve the definition of marriage as the union of one man and one woman."

Cordileone also is seeking to define teachers as ministers in the collective bargaining agreement now under negotiation with the teachers' union -- a move that would probably strip them of recourse under anti-discrimination law in the event of dismissal.

From "Archbishop on crash course with S.F., state" by Jill Tucker, San Francisco Chronicle 2/18/15

San Francisco’s archbishop is trying to make its Catholic schools more Catholic, but city and state officials are poised to push back, saying any effort to discriminate against employees will be met with legal action.

“Catholic schools exist to affirm and proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ as held and taught by his Catholic Church,” Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone said in his explanation for the addition of language against homosexuality, same-sex marriage, abortion, contraceptives and artificial insemination. Teachers who publicly violate that language could face discipline or dismissal.

That’s a problem, said Supervisor Mark Farrell, who said he will introduce a resolution Tuesday calling on Cordileone to resolve the issue of the morality clauses in a way that preserves the rights and dignity of teachers while respecting the church.

He also said city officials were looking at legal options to prevent discriminatory employment practices, if necessary.

Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone wrote the message in response to a letter sent to him earlier this week by California lawmakers urging him to remove from a teachers' handbook morality clauses they say are discriminatory and divisive.

On Tuesday, Democratic Assemblymen Phil Ting of San Francisco and Kevin Mullin of San Mateo made public a letter to Cordileone written by them and signed by every lawmaker representing the communities served by the four Catholic high schools in San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin counties.

The statement outlines the church's teaching that using contraception is a sin and that sex outside of marriage, whether it is in the form of adultery, masturbation, pornography or gay sex, is "gravely evil."

[The faculty handbook] says "administrators, faculty and staff of any faith or no faith are expected to arrange and conduct their lives so as not to visibly contradict, undermine or deny" church doctrine and practice.

It calls on Catholic employees to additionally strive to "conform their hearts, minds and consciences, as well as their public and private behavior" to church teaching.

"There is no doubt about it that ... many people's notions of what is appropriate in the sexual area have changed, and that includes many Catholics," [archdiocesan vicar for administration and moderator of the curia, Jesuit Fr. John] Piderit said. "What the archbishop wants to do is reaffirm that ... the four archdiocesan schools as institutions still teach and defend the Catholic faith as it appears in the Catechism. He goes out of his way to say that the issues that he chose are not the most important, but they are important issues, especially for young people, because they are at a time when they are forming their views on these things. But he recognizes that there are many other issues. However, he calls these the 'hot-button' issues -- the issues upon which there has been severe changes in both secular society and in the thinking of many Catholics over the past 30 or so years."

UPDATE 3/17/15: Pornography Belongs in Classroom, More Experts Say

-- From "Calif. high school had sex ed teachers with interesting sidelines" posted at FoxNews.com 1/26/15

. . . At least two of the instructors had questionable day jobs, with one conducting sex toy workshops at a local porn shop. Another, who dubbed herself a “pleasure activist,” had attended pornography conferences with other Planned Parenthood employees.

One instructor leads a “pleasure workshop”—in which the use of sex toys are demonstrated at a store called Good Vibrations in nearby Berkeley. It was not immediately clear if the instructor told students of the store’s offerings.

They also discovered that a second instructor at Acalanes High School who was an education manager for Planned Parenthood Northern California, had boasted that she was a “pleasure activist” online and also commented on her twitter feed that she attended the CatalystCon pornography conference. The conference attracts members of the porn industry and has workshops and panels that discusses topics like using explicit instructional media for sex ed, the history of sex toys and how to effectively share your sex life on the stage and on the page.

From "SF Bay Area School Permits Queer Straight Alliance to Bully Students" posted at Pacific Justice Institute 2/5/15

Attorneys with Pacific Justice Institute sent a demand letter to attorneys for Acalanes High School late Wednesday over incidents last week where students were singled out and ostracized for their beliefs.  Students reported that, on Jan. 29, members of the school’s Queer Straight Alliance (QSA) took over all freshmen English classes to grill students about their beliefs and their parents’ beliefs on LGBT issues.  The QSA had students step forward to demonstrate whether they believed that being gay was a choice and whether their parents would be accepting if they came out as gay. Students who did not step forward were ridiculed and humiliated.  The QSA also gave students a handout of LGBT terminology such as “pan-sexual,” “demi-sexual,” “gray gender,” and about a dozen other terms.  The QSA also had students line up to demonstrate where they fell on the “gender spectrum.”

. . . PJI further explained that the school’s actions violated the students’ constitutional privacy rights.  The letter demands that the school immediately cease the interrogations and suspend the QSA.  The letter also demands all public records associated with the events of Jan. 29, including e-mails from school officials who approved it.

Pelosi Anti-Life Science NOT Catholic: Archbishop

When San Francisco Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi was asked if an unborn baby is a human being at 20 weeks gestation, she said that the mother is the one who matters and anyway that's not a question for politicians to answer.  In response, San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone denounced House Minority Leader Pelosi's refusal to verbalize the “scientific fact that human life begins at conception,” and he further stated that “no Catholic can dissent in good conscience” from the Church teaching on abortion.

“I don’t think it’s up to politicians to do that,” Pelosi said in a briefing Thursday.

“You know it’s really interesting that you would come to these meetings to talk about [abortion],” she told the reporter. “The fact is what we have said. The life and the health of a mother is what is preeminent when a decision is made about a woman’s reproductive health.”

“It isn’t an ideological fight,” she added. “It’s a personal health issue. This is up to women — their conscience, their god their doctor, their health, their fate, survival.”

From "SF Archbishop on Pelosi: No Catholic Can Dissent from Church Teaching on Abortion" by Lauretta Brown, CNSNews.com 1/26/15

At her Jan. 22 briefing Pelosi said she had "great standing" to speak on the issue of abortion, noting that she was a "Catholic and a mom of five" and asserting that it was "true" she knew "more about having babies than the pope."

CNSNews.com asked Archbishop Cordileone about Pelosi’s comments on human life, particularly in light her self-description “as a Catholic and a mom of five."

"It is a scientific fact that human life begins at conception," the archbishop said in a written statement to CNSNews.com. "This has been established in medical science for over 100 years. Catholic moral teaching acknowledges this scientific fact, and has always affirmed the grave moral evil of taking an innocent human life.

“This has been the consistent teaching of the Church from the very beginning, a teaching already discernible in the natural moral law, and so a teaching from which no Catholic can dissent in good conscience,” he said.

The question, and follow-up, were asked by a reporter with CNSNews in reference to the ongoing debate about a bill in Congress that would ban abortion after 20 weeks, except in cases of rape, incest, and a threat to the life of the mother. . . . One recent poll found that 84% of Americans support the bill.

CNSNews.com: "Is an unborn child 20 weeks into pregnancy a human being?"

Pelosi: "You know what, what we're talking about on the floor of the House is something that says politicians should determine what effects the health of a woman, her life, her health, and the rest. I don't think it's up to politicians to do that. And that's why we are very overwhelmingly opposing what is going on on the floor of the House."

Later…

CNSNews.com: "My question is pretty simple. On the abortion issue, I understand your position on the legislation, but even the legislation aside, when it comes to the matter of whether or not an unborn child is a human being at 20 weeks gestation, what is your personal take on it. If it is not a human being, then what do you believe it is?

Pelosi: “You know it is really interesting that you would come to these meetings to talk about it. The fact is is what we have said: The life and the health of the mother is what is preeminent in when a decision is made about a woman’s reproductive health. It isn't an ideological fight, it is a personal health issue."

After a brief rally at the Washington Monument, the crowd filled Constitution Avenue, stretching for several blocks as people headed for Capitol Hill.

The march was scheduled to pass in front of the U.S. Supreme Court, but as it neared the marble edifice, a small counterprotest stepped into the street and stopped the marchers. . . . The group, which numbered a few dozen, chanted, "Without these basic rights, women can't be free — abortion on demand and without apology."

Police quickly moved the abortion opponents to the curb and arrested most of the counterprotesters, restraining their arms behind them with plastic ties and carrying them off as the march members cheered. A few chanted, "Je-sus! Je-sus!" and "USA! USA!"

The march took place as congressional leaders canceled a vote, scheduled for Thursday, on an abortion bill sponsored by Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz. The decision came after some members objected that the legislation was too restrictive and would hurt them with voters. Lawmakers instead approved a watered-down bill that would ban federal funding for abortions.

Franks' bill would have banned abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy and provided exceptions for a woman's health and in cases of reported rape or incest involving a minor.

From "Traffic At A Virtual Standstill As Thousands Of Anti-Abortion Demonstrators Converge On San Francisco" posted at KCBS 1/24/15

Tens of thousands of people who oppose abortion gathered in San Francisco Saturday for the 11th Annual Walk for Life event. The event created major gridlock in The City, with traffic backed up all the way onto the Bay Bridge.

The Walk for Life in San Francisco is one of the largest in the country. It marks the anniversary of the 1973 Supreme Court decision, Roe Vs. Wade that made abortion legal in this country. The event attracts more than 50,000 people from all over the country who come in by the busloads.

Pastor Clenard Childress was one of them. He came all the way from New Jersey. Childress said it is intellectually dishonest for a woman “to claim a right for herself and in so doing, take away the right of somebody else.”

“This is so hypocritical to me, that we are grateful that our mothers chose life, yet we want a child in the womb to be denied the access we have already gained,” he said.

From "White House signals Obama will veto abortion ban" by Irin Carmon, MSNBC 1/20/15

Thursday is, not coincidentally, the 42nd anniversary of Roe v. Wade,  and the day when anti-abortion activists are marching on the National Mall in the annual March for Life, featuring several Republican elected officials. H.R. 36, which bans abortion at 20 weeks on the unscientific (and so far legally irrelevant) claim that fetuses feel pain at that point, passed the House in 2013 but never got a vote in the Senate — which may change now that Republicans control it. About 1% of abortions take place after 20 weeks.

The political strategy of the 20 week ban is clear: Force Democrats to get on the record about later abortions, which poll poorly unless accompanied by information about the difficult circumstances facing women who get them. The legal strategy is also pretty clear: Justice Anthony Kennedy, once a swing vote on abortion, signaled his distaste for later abortions in the last major Supreme Court abortion case, Gonzales v. Carhart. Anti-abortion strategists are hoping to get him to sign onto a 20-week ban with vivid talk of fetal pain, thus undercutting his repeated holding that it’s unconstitutional to ban abortion before a fetus can survive outside of the womb. So far, the Supreme Court has declined to hear recent abortion cases before them, including Arizona’s 20-week ban, which was held unconstitutional by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.

From "House votes to block federal funding of abortion" by Natalie Villacorta, Politico 1/22/15

President Barack Obama lashed out at House passage Thursday of a bill that would permanently prohibit taxpayer funding for abortion. The House easily passed it after GOP leaders had to cancel a vote on another bill that would have banned most abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, which got caught up in a fight about exemptions for rape victims.

The House vote took place on the anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion. Anti-abortion protesters had come to Washington for the annual March for Life.

More than 50 angry march participants showed up outside the office of Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-N.C.), who pulled her co-sponsorship of the 20-week ban because of the requirement that rape victims report the crime to law enforcement authorities in order to obtain an exemption.

The House did easily pass H.R. 7, the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion and Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act of 2015, sponsored by Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.). White House advisers said they would recommend a veto should the bill reach the president’s desk.

I am deeply committed to protecting this core constitutional right, and I believe that efforts like H.R. 7, the bill the House considered today, would intrude on women's reproductive freedom and access to health care and unnecessarily restrict the private insurance choices that consumers have today. The federal government should not be injecting itself into decisions best made between women, their families, and their doctors.  I am also deeply committed to continuing our work to reduce unintended pregnancies, support maternal and child health, promote adoptions, and minimize the need for abortion.

Today, as we reflect on this critical moment in our history, may we all rededicate ourselves to ensuring that our daughters have the same rights, freedoms, and opportunities as our sons.

Today, we mark the 43rd anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling in Roe v. Wade, which affirmed a woman’s freedom to make her own choices about her body and her health. The decision supports the broader principle that the government should not intrude on private decisions made between a woman and her doctor. As we commemorate this day, we also redouble our commitment to protecting these constitutional rights, including protecting a woman’s access to safe, affordable health care and her right to reproductive freedom from efforts to undermine or overturn them. In America, every single one of us deserves the rights, freedoms, and opportunities to fulfill our dreams.

Pseudo Prayer Mandatory at School in San Francisco

Liberal educators are among the most virulent opponents of mandatory prayer in school, and so it's ironic to see the San Francisco Public School District embrace a program from the local Center for Wellness and Achievement in Education (CWAE) that forces students to appear to pray for 15 minutes twice per day during school hours — Transcendental Meditation according to CWAE.
"Our flagship program is Quiet Time, a meditation-based stress reduction and wellness program that enhances the healthy development of students, teachers, and administrators in schools."

"The kids see guns on a daily basis," the school's athletic director, Barry O'Driscoll said, adding, "there would be fights here three-to-five times a week."

"I thought this is hippy stuff that didn't work in the '70s, so how's it gonna work now," O'Driscoll said. But he changed his tune, when over a four-year period, suspensions decreased by 79 percent and attendance and academic performance noticeably increased.

From "Meditation Program in California Schools Reduces Violence And Improves Performance" posted at Inquisitr 12/31/14

The program was dubbed “Quiet Time” and was introduced to four California schools including a Visitacion Valley School which has been exposed to violence both inside and outside of the school. That all started to change when the San Francisco Public School District introduced the “Quiet Time” meditation program to the Visitacion Valley middle school as well as three other local middle schools. Students in the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades participated in the program, which has the schools going silent two times each day for 15 minutes of meditation.

These results are no surprise to those who advocate for meditation. In addition to reducing stress levels, several studies has shown that regular meditation brings a number of cognitive and health benefits for both children and adults, including reducing blood pressure and preventing heart disease. Meditation has also been successful in managing pain and a variety of health conditions including asthma, depression, sleep disorders, and anxiety, and is an excellent tool for child birth as well. The popular form of meditation sometimes called mindfulness meditation has also been shown to improve concentration and critical thinking skills and researchers from both Yale and Harvard have shown that meditation can actually improve grey matter in the brain.

With meditation being such an easy, not to mention free, way to improve the lives and educational experiences of students, it is likely that the amazing success of the “Quiet Time” program could spread to other schools in California and, hopefully, around the country.

From "Meditation transforms roughest San Francisco schools" by David L. Kirp, a professor of public policy at UC Berkeley (posted at San Francisco Chronicle) 1/12/14

What's happening at Visitacion Valley Middle School, which in 2007 became the first public school nationwide to adopt the program, shows why the superintendent is so enthusiastic. . . .

At first glance, Quiet Time - a stress reduction strategy used in several San Francisco middle and high schools, as well as in scattered schools around the Bay Area - looks like something out of the om-chanting 1960s. Twice daily, a gong sounds in the classroom and rowdy adolescents, who normally can't sit still for 10 seconds, shut their eyes and try to clear their minds. I've spent lots of time in urban schools and have never seen anything like it.

This practice - meditation rebranded - deserves serious attention from parents and policymakers. An impressive array of studies shows that integrating meditation into a school's daily routine can markedly improve the lives of students. If San Francisco schools Superintendent Richard Carranza has his way, Quiet Time could well spread citywide.

While Quiet Time is no panacea, it's a game-changer for many students who otherwise might have become dropouts. That's reason enough to make meditation a school staple, and not just in San Francisco.

San Fran. Parents Want Abortionists Out of School

San Francisco Bay Area parents, along with their lawyers, are petitioning the Acalanes Union High School District in Lafayette, California to break its teaching contract with Planned Parenthood.  The parents say the school should not pay abortionists to sexualize their 13-year-old children with “Sex Check! Are You Ready For Sex?” worksheets urging kids to ask each other, “Do you want to go back to my place?” and “Is it OK if I take my pants off?”

"Our board has long supported comprehensive sexual health and HIV/AID prevention," [Superintendent John] Nickerson said. "Planned Parenthood has been utilized as a consultant for well over 10 years in some of our schools."

"We have to give 10 days notice of what we're going to be teaching when it comes to this unit, and that information was provided ahead of time with the topics that would be covered," [Acalanes Principal Allison Silvestri] said. "The instructor followed ed. code and the curriculum we had agreed upon," she added. "I was very pleased with the professionalism."

Nickerson and Silvestri both said it is common practice to contract this curriculum out with Planned Parenthood because their people are more up-to-date than instructors at the school, and are often more comfortable talking with teenagers about the subject matter.

"It's a divisive issue and the school principal and superintendent and school board should have known better than to have (Planned Parenthood) come in exclusively," said Giglio, calling it a "pro-choice organization." "There are plenty of other organizations they could have asked."

“[Parents] are very concerned,” Brad Dacus, president of the Pacific Justice Institute, a non-profit legal organization that is assisting the concerned parents, told FoxNews.com. “Planned Parenthood is not exactly the best when it comes to putting young people first.

They were also taught about gender identity with the “Genderbread Person,” a play on the name of the holiday cookie, to teach them on how to identify themselves as either, “agender,” “bigender,” and “two spirit” to name a few.

“Our daughter took this course two years ago, after being provided the opportunity to opt out of the class,” John Lyons, whose two children attend AHS, told FoxNews.com. “The opt-out form provided a handful of bullet points about what the course would cover. After completing the course, it was apparent that some of what was ‘taught’ went beyond what was represented on the opt-out form. This is disappointing to us, because we are actually strong supporters of teen sex education in a peer environment to complement our home-based discussions.”

From "School Stirs Controversy with 'Genderbread,' Sex Checklists" by Brad Dacus, posted at Standard Newswire 12/8/14

Parents of freshmen at Acalanes High School [AHS] in Lafayette started asking questions after students began reporting disturbing behavior in a sex ed class at the school.  Students reported that instructors threw a model of female reproductive organs at a student and that the instruction left them feeling pressured to have sex.  The parents eventually obtained documents from the school district that confirmed their fears and indicate that some of the instruction may have been illegal.

Pacific Justice Institute has begun working with the parents in Lafayette.  PJI sent a letter to the district on Nov. 24 raising "serious concerns" as to the legality of the program and included requests for public records.  The district briefly responded Dec. 4 to insist that it needed an additional two weeks to locate the records.

Meanwhile, parents have collected more than 100 signatures on a petition and are working to educate the school community about what is happening behind closed doors at AHS.  To date, the district and AHS principal have resisted calls to pull the program, which is scheduled to start back up in January.  A number of parents are expected to speak out about the program at a Dec. 10 school board meeting.

Learn to be Abortionist in 6-weeks, Free Online

These are difficult times for abortion advocates . . .

With the ever-decreasing supply of licensed abortionists in the United States, the abortion industry is desperate to lure physicians into their child-killing trade — ergo, the first-ever online training course offered by the University of California (UCSF) begins today.  However, this course is not as much about medical training as it is indoctrination in the sexual revolution/abortion culture.

“I think that if we can inspire even a small portion of the people who take the course to take steps in their communities to increase access to safe abortion and decrease stigma about abortion, then we have been totally successful.”

It’s meant to offer a more in-depth view of abortion, delving into the reasons abortion is stigmatized, clinical practices for safe abortions, and “the professional obligations of health care practitioners to ensure that women have access to safe abortion care,” the website for the class says.

Obviously, these are aspects of abortion that should already be taught to health care providers. But [course author Dr. Jody] Steinauer sees major gaps in the health education structure. These gaps begin early, with disparities in the way kids learn about sex, pregnancy, and abortion in schools. According to the Guttmacher Institute, only 13 states require that teachers inform their students about the negative outcomes of teen sex and pregnancy. Meanwhile, 25 states mandate teachers to stress abstinence, while 19 states emphasize having sex only after marriage. Seems counterintuitive to teaching women (and men) about their health, and more geared toward avoiding the subject.

But avoiding the subject continues later on in universities and medical schools, where coursework on abortion can be limited, with some courses only devoting one session to the subject. Even people who aspire to be gynecologists or obstetricians, who are mandated to learn at least something about inducing abortions, can opt out on the basis of religion or moral objections. Under that same loophole, universities can send students to other institutions for those classes. These gaps have led 25 percent of ob-gyn clerkships in the U.S. to report no formal abortion training, The Daily Beast reported. Steinauer’s course aims to educate those who are missing out.

From "The Internet’s First Abortion Class" by Samantha Allen, The Daily Beast 10/6/14

. . . abortion education in U.S. medical schools and public health programs in the United States is still in lackluster shape. While the Guttmacher Institute estimates that 30 percent of American women will have an abortion by the age of 45, a 2005 review of U.S. medical school curricula on abortion revealed that less than a third of schools include a single lecture focused on abortion during the clinical years. A 2009 survey also found that a full third of North American medical schools do not include abortion education in preclinical courses either.

[Dr.] Steinauer’s own approach to abortion education stresses two inevitabilities that she believes must be loudly acknowledged and accepted before meaningful education can take place: “Unintended pregnancies happen and women will access abortion.” . . .

The course will encourage students, she says, to “really reflect on your feelings about abortion... and then, take time to think about how you can best serve your community.” One assignment will ask students to “write about their feelings about abortion and how they should manage them.”

. . . The Internet could be exactly what abortion education needs to move forward in the 21st century.

While it is designed for “any clinician, physician, health care worker or student who will care for women of reproductive age,” it’s open to anyone.

“Each week’s lectures will incorporate the stories of women who seek abortion in order to better portray abortion significance and rationale,” its outline states. “Other topics will include a brief history of abortion, the clinical aspects of medication and procedural abortions in and after the first trimester, an overview of patient-centered abortion-care, the basics of abortion counseling, the professional obligations of health care practitioners to ensure that women have access to safe abortion care, and the maze of restrictions that make safe abortion care inaccessible to many women.”

An on-line syllabus spends portions of weeks 3 and 4 addressing “Clinical aspects of medication abortion, aspiration abortion, post-abortion contraception, and pain management of abortion” and then “Clinical aspects of abortion after the first trimester.” But a large portion of the course seems devoted to the “History of abortion and abortion stigma” (Week 1), “Values clarification about abortion care” (Week 2), “Legislative and policy obstacles to abortion access” (Week 3),“Obstacles to Accessing Safe Abortion in the US and Worldwide” (Week 4), and “Overcoming Obstacles to Abortion Access” (Week 5).

. . . Nowhere in the [above Daily Beast] interview does Steinauer seem to acknowledge that the resistance of students and medical schools, the “stigma” and the negative emotions, may stem from the fact that many people recognize that abortion is the killing of human beings, something people find not just morally repulsive, but totally inconsistent with the practice of medicine, which is supposed to be dedicated to the preservation of human life.

It is unclear whether or not Steinauer expects students of the on-line course to consider themselves trained to do abortions and immediately begin offering them, pursue more direct training, or just become advocates.
