Feminists vs. Super Bowl Ad 'Humanizing Fetuses'

The National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL) lambasted a Doritos commercial that aired during the 50th Super Bowl yesterday because an unborn child was depicted in an animated ultrasound image as being aware of his/her surroundings, including of the father with his Doritos snack chips.  The recognition of a fetus as a functioning human being (personhood) is the antithesis of abortion advocacy.

NARAL Pro-Choice America, a leading advocacy group on the issue of abortion, started firing a string of tweets about ads running during Super Bowl 50 on Sunday night, criticizing several in particular as "transphobic" or "sexist."

The group had announced it would be live-tweeting the event to call out "sexist" advertisers and their creations. . . .

Snack companies couldn't catch a break, apparently. NARAL called out a Snickers commercial for being "transphobic" and a Doritos ad for "humanizing fetuses" . . .

In the commercial, a guy munching away on a bag of Doritos during his wife’s ultrasound attracts the attention of their unborn child, who makes a hasty exit, presumably to share Dad’s snack.

NARAL also complains that the ad reinforces “sexist tropes of dads as clueless and moms as uptight.”

Don’t mess with babies. Unless they are attached to puppies and monkeys.

That is one of the marketing lessons to come out of Super Bowl 50 . . .

For better or worse, Pepsi’s Doritos brand certainly knows how to create some buzz. In one of its Super Bowl spots, a woman is getting an ultrasound while her partner stands by, eating Doritos. She gets upset at his lack of decorum and throws a chip across the room. Her unborn fetus goes after it, and everyone screams. . . .

One of the biggest abortion groups in the U.S. has attacked one of Sunday’s Super Bowl ads for being “anti-choice”, but the commercial was about Doritos.

The National Abortion Rights Action League also accused Snickers of being “transphobic” for an ad which depicts a grumpy man wearing the white dress made famous by Marilyn Monroe. Once he ate the candy bar, he turned into the real Monroe, because he wasn’t hungry any more, according to Breitbart.

The group also blasted a Hyundai ad on Twitter, calling it “sexist” and “misogynistic”, when an advertisement aired about a dad following his teenage daughter on a date. They claimed his concern for his child was taking away her autonomy and “stalking her”, as The Daily Caller reported.

Calif. Law Forces Abortion Business on Pro-lifers

California Governor Jerry Brown has signed AB 775, The Reproductive FACT Act, that requires pro-life pregnancy centers to tell their clients where to get an abortion and “unconstitutionally compels [these centers] to speak messages that they have not chosen, with which they do not agree, and that distract, and detract from, the messages they have chosen to speak.”  Clinics immediately filed a lawsuit seeking an injunction of this egregious violation of their First Amendment free speech and religious rights.

On Saturday in Sacramento federal court, religiously affiliated clinics in Marysville and Redding that don’t offer abortions sued California Attorney General Kamala Harris, a sponsor of the new law, asking for an injunction preventing it from taking effect Jan. 1.

The 18-page complaint, filed on behalf of the clinics by the Pacific Justice Institute, a conservative, nonprofit legal organization in Sacramento, asks the court to declare the Reproductive Fact Act unconstitutional and prohibit its enforcement.

Two such facilities – A Woman’s Friend Pregnancy Resource Clinic in Marysville and Crisis Pregnancy Center of Northern California in Redding – filed the suit against Harris. Both religious nonprofit corporations are licensed by the state to operate the clinics and offer, at no charge, medical consultations, pregnancy testing, ultrasound examinations and other services, the suit says. It says that, based on moral and religious convictions, they do not offer or refer for abortions.

From "Government-Mandated Speech: Jerry Brown Signs Law Forcing Pro-Life Pregnancy Centers to Promote Abortion" by Lauretta Brown, CNSNews.com 10/12/15

According to the legislation, pregnancy centers that fail to disseminate this message “are liable for a civil penalty of five hundred dollars ($500) for a first offense and one thousand dollars ($1,000) for each subsequent offense.”

"Does the government have a right to tell a newspaper what to write, a preacher what to preach, a private school what to teach? Of course not,” said Assemblywoman Shannon Grove (R-Bakersfield) in a statement following the bill’s passage in the State Assembly.

“So why is it okay for the government to force pro-life pregnancy centers against their will to advertise and promote government abortion services?” she asked.

“AB 775 sets a bad precedent by allowing the state -- a government entity -- to dictate what information a non-profit organization -- a non-profit that receives not a dime of state or government funding -- has to provide to their clients,” she concluded.

From "Abortion Opponents Call Law Forced Speech" by Nick Cahill, Courthouse News Service 10/14/15

The bill passed both houses by a combined 73-40 margin and requires clinics offering pregnancy-related services to inform patients of low-cost options via a conspicuous sign or a printed notice.

The Pacific Justice Institute filed the complaint for the clinics. The institute said forcing the clinics to relay the government's message conflicts with the alternatives it seeks to provide pregnant women.

"Forcing a religious pro-life charity to proclaim a pro-abortion declaration is on its face an egregious violation of both the free speech and free exercise clauses of the First Amendment to the Constitution," the institute's president Brad Dacus said.

Calif. Forces Catholics to Fund Abortion Insurance

The ACLU and abortionists are heralding a decree by California that Catholic universities cannot exclude elective abortion coverage from employee health insurance.  The mandate from the governor's office issued Friday refers to abortion as "a basic health care service" and says that it's unconstitutional to allow Catholics to refuse to pay for mothers to kill their unborn children.

UPDATE 8/26/14: ObamaCare Pays for Sexual Mutilation in California

-- From "California: Insurers Must Cover Elective Abortions" by The Associated Press 8/23/14

Although the federal Affordable Care Act [ObamaCare] does not compel employers to provide workers with health insurance that includes abortion coverage, [Michelle Rouillard,] the director of California's Department of Managed Health Care said in a letter to seven insurance companies on Friday that the state Constitution and a 1975 state law prohibits them from selling group plans that exclude the procedure. The law in question requires such plans to encompass all "medically necessary" care.

Jesuit-run Santa Clara University and Loyola Marymount University notified employees last fall that they planned to stop paying for elective abortions, but said faculty and staff members could pay for supplemental coverage that would be provided through a third party. The two schools said their insurers, Anthem Blue Cross and Kaiser Permanente, had cleared the move with the state.

University employees who objected to the decision and abortion-rights groups lobbied the women' caucus of the California Legislature, which in turn asked Gov. Jerry Brown to clarify and reverse the health care department's determination.

From "California reverses position on health insurance abortion coverage" by Tracy Seipel, San Jose Mercury News 8/23/14

In her letter, Rouillard said that her department had "erroneously approved or did not object" to discriminatory language that limited or excluded abortion coverage in some health insurance policies that cover "a very small fraction" of health plan enrollees dating back to 2008. The controversy surfaced last year after administrators at Santa Clara University and Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, both founded by the Jesuit order, decided to drop health insurance coverage of elective abortions.

The decision led to uproar among staff and faculty at each institution, prompting some members to reach out to non-profits like Planned Parenthood for assistance. Those abortion rights advocates in turn contacted the Legislature's Women's Caucus, which sent a letter to Gov. Brown this month asking him to direct the department to change its position about what constitutes a covered abortion.

Spokespeople for both universities on Friday said they are conferring with their insurers, Anthem Blue Cross of California, and Kaiser Permanente, about the decision in order to ensure that the plans at the schools are fully compliant with state and federal law.

However, the antiabortion groups Alliance Defending Freedom and Life Legal Defense Foundation sent a letter to Rouillard on Friday saying that they plan to file a civil rights complaint about the new directive.

Google policy states that advertisements must be "factually supportable," as well as truthful and accurate. Advertisers who do not comply with Google policies may see their ads rejected or their domains disabled or accounts suspended.

Google said in a statement that it had applied its ad policy standards in this case and followed normal company procedures. . . . "If we find violations, we'll take the appropriate actions — including account disablings and blacklists — as quickly as possible."

According to NARAL, people using Google to search for “abortion clinics” got ads advertising the crisis centers about 79 percent of the time.

NARAL logged a series of complaints with Google about ads that it claimed were deceptive, and spent the last month urging the company to take action. According to NARAL, more than two-thirds of the ads it passed along to Google were removed.

Among those were ads linked to groups that, NARAL said, openly acknowledge their intent to urge people not to have abortions.

. . . thousands of protesters . . . marched from the National Mall to the Supreme Court in chilly, soggy weather in the annual call for an end to abortion in the USA. The march is held every year since 1974 to mark the anniversary of the 1973 Supreme Court Roe v. Wade decision that made abortion legal nationwide.

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, told the throng gathered Monday afternoon on the muddy National Mall that he's one of 12 children.

Several dozen members of Congress addressed the rally and were cheered by participants, many of whom carried signs reading: "I Vote Pro-Life First" and "Defund Planned Parenthood." Signs endorsing Republican presidential contenders were less evident, although some favored Rick Santorum and Ron Paul.

From "New York Times Ignores Massive Pro-Life March for Fifth Year in a Row" by Clay Waters, NewsBusters 1/24/12

For the fifth year in a row, there was no story in the Times print edition on the annual March for Life against abortion in Washington, D.C., which every year draws massive crowds in unpromising weather on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court's decision legalizing abortion.

Even the two references made about the march at nytimes.com were accidental, done to explain where Sen. Rand Paul was headed when he was stopped at airport security by TSA in Nashville, leading editorial page editor Andrew Rosenthal to incoherently argue: “Mr. Paul was on his way to a ‘March for Life’ anti-abortion rally. I can’t wrap my mind around the blatant contradiction here. A breezy airport security experience is essential to our liberty, but a woman’s right to choose isn’t?”

As Times Watch reported last January, the 2011 print edition of the Times did not feature an actual news story of the thousands who marched in frigid weather, just two photos with the caption “Abortion Opponents Rally On the National Mall,” above a three-sentence description that led to a link to photographs online. That was actually a vast improvement; the Times in print absolutely ignored the March for Life in 2010, 2009, and 2008 (a 300-word story marked the 2007 March for Life on January 23 of that year).

Mitt Romney's team will dismiss it as old news, but this Washington Post story on the former Massachusetts governor's "ever-evolving ideology" is a must-read because it underlines his greatest weakness as a presidential candidate.

When Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, became a presidential candidate in 2008, his views on [Culture War] issues had shifted dramatically to the right. Raw politics at work: A moderate record suited Romney's needs in Democratic-leaning Massachusetts and conservative views are a necessity in national GOP primaries.

Romney's only hope of dodging the flip-flopping label is that journalists and their readers decide to give him a pass because his position shifts are old news. Mitt Romney was firm and direct with the abortion rights advocates sitting in his office nine years ago, assuring the group that if elected Massachusetts governor, he would protect the state’s abortion laws.

Then, as the meeting drew to a close, the businessman offered an intriguing suggestion — that he would rise to national prominence in the Republican Party as a victor in a liberal state and could use his influence to soften the GOP’s hard-line opposition to abortion.

He would be a “good voice in the party” for their cause, and his moderation on the issue would be “widely written about,” he said, according to detailed notes taken by an officer of the group, NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts.

“You need someone like me in Washington,” several participants recalled Romney saying that day in September 2002, an apparent reference to his future ambitions.

Women Honored for Killing their Offspring

The wealthy 85-year-old Harriett Hills Stinson (from the San Francisco family that founded Hills Bros. Coffee) has decided to make public her choice to kill her unborn child decades before Roe v. Wade made it legal for her to do so. She is encouraging other women to proudly speak out on their own action(s) to make that ultimate choice of death for their child(ren).

"I've never regretted it. . . . for the sake of my family, it was not right for me to have a fourth child."

-- From "Women urge others to go public about abortions" by Carla Marinucci, San Francisco Chronicle Political Writer 10/13/11

On Wednesday, Stinson was honored as national, state and Bay Area supporters of abortion and reproductive rights gathered on the Peninsula for their annual Power of Choice lunch sponsored by NARAL Pro-Choice America, the nation's largest abortion and reproductive rights advocacy group.

The gathering in Palo Alto of 600 supporters was held to assess the political landscape on a key social issue and discuss the impact of what women's leaders are increasingly defining as a conservatives' "war on women" as the 2012 presidential race heats up.

Stinson's decision to tell the story of her abortion at Wednesday's event comes as pro-choice supporters warn of an increasingly militant conservative lobby that they say hopes for sharp restrictions on family planning funding and legal abortions - an issue they predict could influence the women's vote in next year's election.

Stinson urged the estimated 1 in 4 American women who have had abortions to "be bold and brave and do something drastic," to tell their stories to their friends, family and legislators, an effort she said will bring the matter out of the shadows and dramatize the need for safe, legal services.

San Fran. to Censor Pro-life Counseling Centers

Abortion advocate NARAL has been enlisted by San Francisco officials in drafting an ordinance against "misleading advertising" by pregnancy crisis centers. This harassment emanated from a realization by abortionists that Google searches on the word "abortion" yields pro-life centers.

-- From "Pols Pressure Pregnancy Clinic over 'Anti-Abortion' Tactics" by RJ Middleton, NBC Bay Area TV 8/8/11

San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera claims that the First Resort Clinic -- with offices in San Francisco, Oakland and Redwood City -- uses tactics like forced ultrasounds, tales of botched abortions and other methods to dissuade women from considering abortions, according to a release from the attorney's office.

The pols want First Resort [a pro-life counseling service] to change the language on its website about exactly what services it provides by the end of August.

First Resort, according to Patch, sent a response: "(We) reject in the strongest possible terms any representation that our advertising misleads women. We treat women with dignity and respect their right to choose."

An ordinance cheered on by the radical pro-abortion group NARAL Pro-Choice California has been introduced in San Francisco that would restrict the operations of pregnancy-counseling centers. It represents the latest in a series of such attacks on pro-life pregnancy centers across the country.

"Crisis pregnancy centers are a serious threat to women's health," Amy Everitt, state director of NARAL Pro-Choice California, said in a prepared statement. “By posing as legitimate medical clinics that offer a full range of reproductive-health services, these fake clinics often lie and manipulate women who are facing unplanned pregnancies. I applaud Supervisor Cohen for her work on this important issue, and urge the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to support Cohen's ordinance."

When news broke of Cohen’s plans in June, pro-life legal groups like the Alliance Defense Fund and the Life Legal Defense Foundation vowed to challenge the law in court. Life Legal Defense Foundation called claims that pregnancy resource centers mislead women “patently false.”

The [ObamaCare] law that President Obama signed last year requires new health plans to cover a basic set of preventive health services without co-pays or deductibles for patients, a key provision of the new law that experts believe will encourage more Americans to get recommended immunizations, cancer screenings and other services.

The law directed the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to seek input from clinicians and other authorities about which additional services should be covered for women.

That prompted the report Tuesday from the Institute of Medicine, or IOM, a branch of the National Academy of Sciences that provides guidance to policymakers.

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius called the recommendations historic and said her department would review them before it finalizes regulations "very soon" specifying which preventive services would have to be covered. A decision is due by Aug. 1.

From "Report Backs Contraception" by Katherine Hobson, Wall Street Journal 7/20/11

[The IOM report] recommends that insurers cover "the full range" of contraceptive methods approved by the Food and Drug Administration as well as sterilization and patient counseling as a way to prevent unintended pregnancies and to help women space their pregnancies over time. There is an increased risk of adverse outcomes for pregnancies that occur within 18 months of a prior pregnancy, the report said.

Contraception coverage is likely to be the most controversial of the eight recommendations in the report. The Family Research Council, a conservative public-policy outfit, said it opposed a mandate to make birth-control coverage free, because people who don't support contraception shouldn't have to subsidize its use by others.

In a statement, Planned Parenthood Federation of America President Cecile Richards praised the report, saying birth control without out-of-pocket expenses "would be a tremendous stride forward for women's health in this country."

From "Panel Recommends Coverage for Contraception" by Robert Pear, New York Times 7/19/11

Obama administration officials said that they were inclined to accept the panel’s advice and that the new requirements could take effect for many plans at the beginning of 2013. The administration signaled its intentions in January when Kathleen Sebelius, the secretary of health and human services, unveiled a 10-year program to improve the nation’s health. One goal was to “increase the proportion of health insurance plans that cover contraceptive supplies and services.”

Administration officials, who say they hope to act on the recommendations by Aug. 1, are receptive to the idea of removing cost as a barrier to birth control — a longtime goal of advocates for women’s rights and experts on women’s health.

“This report is historic,” Ms. Sebelius said on Tuesday in accepting the document. “Before today, guidelines regarding women’s health and preventive care did not exist. These recommendations are based on science and existing literature.”

. . . The recommendation would not help women without insurance.

From "‘Pregnancy is not a disease’: Bishops slam Planned Parenthood push for free birth control" by Kathleen Gilbert, LifeSiteNews.com 7/20/11

“Pregnancy is not a disease, and fertility is not a pathological condition to be suppressed by any means technically possible,” said Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, chairman of the Committee on Pro-Life Activities of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Tuesday.

Like other conservative leaders, the USCCB pro-life chairman noted that the mandate would violate the conscience rights of Americans morally opposed to birth control, and objected to coverage of “emergency contraception” such as ella, a chemical functionally identical to the abortion drug RU-486.

But the cardinal’s challenge did not stop there: DiNardo noted that the IOM report was so radical as to have indicated interest in recommending full abortion coverage as well. The report stated that, “despite the health and well-being benefits to some women,” abortion was outside of the project’s scope given federal legal restrictions.

House Strips ObamaCare of Abortion Training Funds

The House voted Wednesday to ban teaching health centers from using federal money to teach doctors how to perform abortions, the latest in a series of anti-abortion measures pushed by the Republican majority.

-- From "House bans funds for teaching abortion techniques" by Jim Abrams, Associated Press 5/25/11

The proposal was presented as an amendment to the latest of several GOP bills to restrict funding for the health care act that was enacted last year. This bill gives Congress control over spending for a program to encourage health centers to provide training to medical residents. The amendment applies to funding in that grant program.

The Foxx amendment passed 234-182 despite the objections of some Democrats that it would prevent health centers from teaching a basic medical technique that can be critical to saving a woman's life during emergencies.

The Foxx amendment and the overall bill to restrict the health care act both are likely to die in the Democratic-controlled Senate.

From "U.S. House votes to prohibit discrimination against pro-life doctors in new medical education program, 234-182" posted at National Right to Life 5/25/11

The amendment pertains to one of the many new programs created by the sweeping health care restructuring law enacted in 2010 — the “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act” (PPACA), often referred to as “ObamaCare.” The program provided guaranteed funding — $230 million over the first five years — for grants to “teaching health centers” (THCs) for graduate-level training in certain “primary care” fields of medicine, including obstetrics and gynecology. The new program was targeted to “community-based” health centers, including federally funded community health centers and family planning clinics.

The bill brought to the House floor by the House Republican leadership, H.R. 1216, would not abolish the new medical education program, but it would remove it from the realm of “mandatory” funding, meaning that funding level would be set during the regular annual appropriations process. To this bill, Rep. [Virginia] Foxx offered an amendment to prohibit any medical center that receives funds from the program from discriminating against any doctor, nurse, or other health care provider — for example, a medical resident — on grounds that the provider refused to “provide, pay for, provide coverage of, or refer for abortions.”

“The reaction of Planned Parenthood and NARAL to the Foxx Amendment makes it crystal clear that they want the federal taxpayer to fund training of the next generation of abortionists,” said NRLC Legislative Director Douglas Johnson. “In fact, pro-abortion activists are also trying to make it impossible to become certified in and to practice in some medical fields without participating in providing abortions. Stronger federal anti-discrimination laws are needed to counter these efforts, especially since the Obama Administration has severely weakened enforcement of the existing protective laws.”

Abortionists Lament Pro-life Fury in States

A new report by Planned Parenthood's Guttmacher Institute documents the phenomenal pro-life swing in state legislatures across America.

For background, read Pro-life Legislation Floods America because 'Life' Won the 2010 Election, and also read about state pro-life laws immediately thereafter.

-- From "Abortion battle rages in state legislatures" by Michael Martinez and Moni Basu, CNN 4/14/11

"It's pretty much an all-out, anti-abortion free-for-all out there," said Elizabeth Nash, public policy associate at the Guttmacher Institute.

"I've been doing this for almost 12 years now, so I feel like I have some historical sense. This year is just unlike any other year we've seen before."

Consider that 374 anti-abortion bills were introduced in state legislatures this year, 200 more than last year, said Ted Miller, spokesman for NARAL Pro-Choice America.

Of those, 61 bills in 25 states focus on prohibiting health insurance coverage for abortions. Another 20 in 10 states make ultrasounds mandatory before abortions.

From "Report: More states 'hostile' to abortion" posted at UPI 4/14/11

This week, Kansas became the second state in the nation after Nebraska, to enact a "fetal pain" law banning abortions after 21 weeks based on studies that "fetuses can feel pain beginning after the 21st week of pregnancy," a statement by Republican Gov. Sam Brownback's office said.

Sixteen other states are considering measures modeled after Nebraska's law, one of the most stringent abortion restrictions in recent years, the Guttmacher report indicated.

The Guttmacher Institute report said lawmakers introduced 916 abortion-related to measures in 49 state legislatures convened for their regular session through March 31. Louisiana's Legislature doesn't convene until late April. In the same time frame, seven states enacted 15 new laws on these issues.

From "States Seeking To Limit Abortion Rights To Unprecedented Degree In 2011: Report" by Laura Bassett, Huffington Post 4/14/11

More than 120 bills limiting abortion rights have been approved by at least one chamber of the legislature so far, and the 15 bills that enacted into law include a bill in Utah that limits abortion coverage in all private health plans and laws in Utah and Virginia that require their health departments to develop new regulations governing abortion clinics.

In addition to imposing pre-abortion waiting periods, legislators in 13 states have introduced laws forcing women to obtain an ultrasound procedure before having an abortion. Bills in seven of those states -- Alaska, Indiana, Kentucky, Montana, Ohio, Rhode Island and Texas -- would require the woman view the fetus and hear a detailed verbal description of it before undergoing the mandatory waiting period.

Nash, an expert on state abortion policy, said she sees the wave of new legislation seeking to roll back abortion rights as a result of several factors: the recent influx of conservative state legislators (Republicans picked up 20 state legislative chambers in the 2010 elections); the health care law, which spotlighted abortion as an insurance issue; and a few recent anti-abortion legislation successes at the state level that are serving as model legislations.

Abortion 'Heartbeat' Bill Moves in Ohio House

An Ohio state legislative committee has approved the “Heartbeat Bill” that would ban virtually all abortions in the state starting at the 22-day mark when an unborn child’s heart begins beating.

For background, read Ohio GOP Challenge Roe v. Wade

-- From "Ohio House panel OKs anti-abortion Heartbeat Bill" by Julie Carr Smyth, The Associated Press 3/30/11

A state House committee on Wednesday narrowly approved a bill that would impose the strictest abortion limit in the nation, outlawing the procedure at the first detectable fetal heartbeat.

Supporters led by Janet Folger Porter, the director of the Faith2Action network of pro-family groups and a former legislative director of the anti-abortion group Ohio Right to Life, have hoped aloud that the bill sparks a legal challenge to the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling legalizing abortion.

Porter has led a charge to line up a host of high-profile supporters for the bill. They have included Cincinnati physician Jack Willke, a former president of the National Right to Life Committee and founder of the International Right to Life Federation, and Phil Burress, whose Citizens for Community Values led the charge to ban gay marriage, among others.

The Roe v. Wade ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a woman's right to an abortion until fetal viability. A fetus is usually considered viable at 22 to 24 weeks. Fetal heartbeats can be detected as early as six weeks.

From "Ohio Cmte OKs Heartbeat Bill Banning Abortions, Pro-Lifers Split" by Steven Ertelt, LifeNews.com 3/30/11

The bill has divided the pro-life community in Ohio with Porter’s group supporting it along with Paula Westwood, Executive Director of Cincinnati Right to Life, Bobbi Radeck, state director of Concerned Women for America, and Phil Burress, president of Citizens for Community Values, supporting the measure.

But Marshal Pitchford, chairman of the Ohio Right to Life Society, says the legislation is problematic because it would not be upheld in court thanks to the 5-4 pro-abortion majority currently on the Supreme Court. If the bill is declared unconstitutional, Right to Life is concerned current pro-life laws that limit abortions and have saved lives would be overturned as well and result in an increase in the number of abortions.

Some “heartbeat bill” proponents say they followed the advice of several legal scholars when they drafted this bill, including a Cleveland State University professor but Pitchford says the same professor stated that the “heartbeat bill” should not be passed now and prefers to see a post viability ban be passed first or, otherwise, it would be “irresponsible and self-defeating to our cause” and could create additional legal problems for a total ban on abortion.

Gov. John Kasich, who is pro-life, has yet to take a position on the legislation.

Truth About Abortion Offends New Yorkers

An outdoor advertising company has taken down a New York City anti-abortion billboard that showed a black girl along with the tagline, "The most dangerous place for an African-American is in the womb."

A manager for Louisiana-based Lamar Advertising confirmed Thursday the company had decided to take down the billboard. Some black residents said they found it offensive.

The billboard was placed in a busy Manhattan neighborhood by the group Life Always as part of a national campaign tied to Black History Month. The group says its message highlights Planned Parenthood's "targeting of minority neighborhoods."

The billboard was attached to a building that houses the restaurant Lupe's Kitchen. Some of the wait staff, Kilshaw said, were being harassed by patrons who objected to the billboard. In addition, a scheduled protest Friday by people opposed to the billboard prompted public safety concerns, which led to the company's decision.

. . . Stephen Broden, a pastor and Life Always board member, told reporters at a news conference on Wednesday that "it's hard to celebrate Black History Month" with abortion "hanging over our community."

"Abortion is outpacing life in our community" and he said the billboard's message is meant to be a "provocative" way to illustrate the problem.

The sign was part of a national campaign where more billboards will appear over the next couple of months across the country, Life Always spokeswoman Marissa Gabrysch said.

“The message of this billboard is totally accurate,” [Alveda] King said in a statement issued by Priests for Life where she is the director of African-American Outreach.

She added: “And it should provoke outrage in the African-American community—not because it is racist, but because of the truth it reveals; the truth that is being kept from the African-American community.”

The billboard message was a project of thatsabortion.com, which paid for the message as part of its LifeAlways project.

Mary Alice Carr, vice president of communications for NARAL Pro-Choice New York, said in a statement that the billboard was “attacking women for choosing abortion while simultaneously destroying family planning.”

But King said the billboard should have provoked a different kind of outrage.

Report: Not Enough Abortions - ObamaCare the Answer

Friday's report on “reproductive rights” by the abortion advocacy group NARAL Pro-Choice America, which criticizes most state governments for restricting abortion, precedes abortionists' “full court press” to preserve tax-payer-funded abortion in ObamaCare.

UPDATE 3/3/12: To Cut Costs, ObamaCare will Lower Birth Rate, Says White House

-- From "NARAL Report Gives America D Grade For Limiting Abortions" by Steven Ertelt, LifeNews.com 1/14/11

A prominent abortion advocacy group released a state-by-state report on the status of state laws on abortion heading into the 2011 legislative session, and it says America deserves a D grade for limiting abortions too much.

The report comes as state legislatures are expected to add a significant number of new abortion limits, with some stopping the abortion funding in the state exchanges created under Obamacare, others following Nebraska to ban abortions after the 20th week of pregnancy based on fetal pain, and others passing more traditional pro-life legislation such as unborn victims bills or parental notification measures.

“It is clear that the results of the 2010 elections could pose serious threats to the progress we celebrated in previous years’ reports,” NARAL president Nancy Keenan complained. “Some of our key pro-choice champions in Congress and in the states are not returning to their positions.”

The report, titled The Status of Women’s Reproductive Rights in the United States, is a “report card” grading the states and NARAL gives its top marks to California and Washington, which aggressively fund abortions and the Planned Parenthood abortion business with taxpayer dollars. They received A+ grades while Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, and Oregon received A grades from the pro-abortion group.

From "Abortion Lobby Gives America a ‘D’ Grade for ‘Reproductive Rights’" by Penny Starr, CNSNews.com 1/14/11

The report methodology explains that the nationwide score is based on both state restrictions and federal “anti-choice” laws, such as the Federal Abortion Ban, signed into law by President George W. Bush in 2003; the Federal Refusal Clause of the 2004 Abortion Non-Discrimination Act that protects health professionals who are opposed to abortion; and restrictions on abortions for women in the U.S. military.

The 109-page report’s “key findings” section shows what NARAL considers the increase of “anti-choice” laws that have been enacted over the years. In 1995 (the earliest year reported) there were 18 “anti-choice” measures enacted. In 2010 (the last year reported), there were 644 measures enacted nationwide.

The states receiving an “F” in the report are Alabama, Arkansas, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah and Virginia.

From "Healthcare repeal effort will bring abortion debate to the forefront" by Julian Pecquet, The Hill 01/15/11

The House is scheduled to vote on a repeal bill [of ObamaCare] next week, after a one-week hiatus following last weekend's shooting in Tucson that left six people dead and gravely injured Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.). Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have since called for the political rhetoric to be toned down, but a looming showdown over abortion may make that especially difficult.

If anything, the issue may have become even more divisive over the past week after the pro-abortion rights Guttmacher Institute released a report saying a steady decline in U.S. abortions between 1990 and 2005 appears to have stalled . . .

The abortion issue is almost certain to come up as the House takes up the repeal bill because lawmakers will also vote to adopt a resolution instructing congressional committees to draft replacement legislation. That resolution specifies that the effort should include "provisions that ... prohibit taxpayer funding of abortions and provide conscience protections for health care providers."

“It seems clear to us that the new House leadership is threatening a whole series of attacks on reproductive rights, to begin next week,” NARAL Pro-Choice Policy Director Donna Crane told The Hill.

After repeal [of ObamaCare], the anti-abortion rights group has two top priorities related to the healthcare law.

One is a prohibition on taxpayer support for abortion providers under Title X family planning grants. The legislation, introduced Jan. 7 by Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.), targets Planned Parenthood; defeating it is a top priority for NARAL. The bill would “cripple family planning services - not necessarily abortion services but contraceptive services in this country,” Crane said.

[The] other priority is a multi-pronged abortion funding ban sponsored by Reps. Chris Smith (R-N.J.) and Dan Lipinski (D-Ill.). The legislation [HR 5939] was introduced last year but has not been introduced so far this year.

The bill incorporates an amendment, sponsored by Reps. Joe Pitts (R-Penn.) and Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) during the reform debate, prohibiting federal funds from being used “to pay for any abortion or to cover any part of the costs of any health plan that includes coverage of abortion.”

Abortion Clinics Fear Medical Standards

Virginia may enact regulations for abortion clinics similar to hospitals and surgery centers after a ruling by Attorney General Kenneth T. Cuccinelli II.

-- From "Cuccinelli: Virginia has right to regulate abortion clinics" by Matthew Cella, The Washington Times 8/23/10

An opinion issued Friday by the pro-life Republican comes after years of attempts by conservative legislators to pass additional restrictions in the General Assembly for abortion clinics, which in Virginia have been treated for regulatory purposes as physicians' offices.

"The state has long regulated outpatient surgical facilities and personnel to ensure a certain level of protection for patients. There is no reason to hold facilities providing abortion services to any lesser standard for their patients," said Brian J. Gottstein, a spokesman for Mr. Cuccinelli.

"Even pharmacies, funeral homes and veterinary clinics are regulated by the state," he said.

Tarina Keene, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia, said meeting the structural requirements of the regulations could cost as much as $2 million and would be "financially prohibitive" for abortion providers.

From "Ken Cuccinelli's End Run on Abortion" by Nicole Allan, a staff editor at TheAtlantic.com 8/25/10

Virginia abortion rights advocates saw it coming. After Ken Cuccinelli, a rising Republican star known for his hard-line stances on most social issues, was elected state attorney general last year, they knew it was only a matter of time before he zeroed in on abortion.

Cucinelli's tactic is not new. In 2001, Mother Jones ran a story about the rise of what abortion rights advocates call TRAP laws, short for Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers. The article, written by Barry Yeoman and titled "The Quiet War on Abortion," detailed the anti-abortion movement's shift from targeting the legality of the procedure to applying pressure on its providers . . .

According to NARAL Pro-Choice America, varying degrees of TRAP laws have passed in 44 states plus the District of Columbia. . . .

William Hurd, a former solicitor general for the state of Virginia, does not think Cuccinelli has political motives. "The practice has been to call 'em as you see 'em, and that's what the attorney general has done here," he said. "I think the opinion is very carefully crafted, saying that while the boards do have some authority to regulate this, they are also subject to constitutional limitations. Certainly, while people may debate the abortion issue, in terms of pro-life or pro-choice, certainly everyone should agree that women are entitled to good health care."

Babies Spared Death, Liberals Furious

After pro-life advocates exposed abortion coverage in ObamaCare, the White House said that it would limit taxpayer-funded abortion to only cases of rape, incest and the mother's life. As a result, liberals of every stripe are "screaming bloody murder."

-- From "Abortion foes win a round in health overhaul" by Ricardo Alonso-Zaldivar, Associated Press 7/19/10

Abortion foes have won a round in the first test of how President Barack Obama's health care law will be applied to the politically charged issue.

Meanwhile, traditional allies of the administration are grumbling about a decision to ban most abortion coverage in insurance pools for those unable to purchase health care on their own.

The Catholic bishops "welcome this new policy," said Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, although he added the organization remains concerned that other parts of the health care overhaul will promote abortion.

NARAL Pro-Choice America called it "inexplicable and wrongheaded."

. . . the Health and Human Services Department announced last week the program will not cover abortions except in cases of rape, incest or when the mother's life is in danger — exceptions traditionally allowed under federal law.

That's a more restrictive policy than will be generally applied under Obama's new health care law.

Pro-Choice Activist, I wanted to make sure you saw the important message that I sent late on Thursday. We've sent 28,045 messages to President Obama in just a few days, and now he needs to hear from you. Help us keep the pressure on the White House. Please contact President Obama today.

Bad news from the Obama administration on the health-care law:

A Stupak-style ban applies to women in new, temporary high-risk pools.

I am outraged that such a decision would come from a pro-choice president that we helped elect.

Abortion is the most common surgical procedure women receive. At a time when the country is on the cusp of implementing nationwide health-insurance coverage, it is unacceptable to treat abortion care differently in the new high-risk pools.

Help us fight back. Tell President Obama that the abortion-coverage ban was not part of the agreement on health reform.

From "Democrats for Life Attacks Pro-Life Groups on Abortion Funding in Health Care" by Steven Ertelt, LifeNews.com Editor 7/20/10

Last week, the National Right to Life Committee exposed three different instances in which the Obama administration had approved federal taxpayer financing of abortions in new high risk health insurance pools. But to hear Democrats for Life of America tell the story, NRLC officials lied about the funding.

NRLC pointed to information in press releases and on web sites of state agencies in Pennsylvania, New Mexico and Maryland showing the new high risk programs would not prevent funding of abortions.

The Obama administration was forced to retreat and make a promise that the new programs would not fund abortions, though several pro-life groups and the nation's Catholic bishops agreed with the NRLC analysis and said they would believe the Obama administration's word only when they see it implemented.

In an email to its members that LifeNews.com obtained, Democrats for Life trashed NRLC and other pro-life advocates for exposing the funding and supposedly lying about it.

"The National Right to Life Committee and others accused President Obama of allowing public funds to be used for abortion," DFLA said in a statement, saying NRLC "issued a false press release."

DFLA said pro-life advocates and Republicans in Congress "continue to mischaracterize aspects of the health reform bill, we will work to ensure the law provides affordable and accessible health care for millions of Americans while upholding the longstanding ban on public funding of abortion."

DFLA went further in saying Right to Life is wrong to support pro-life candidates who opposed the pro-abortion health care bill over pro-life Democrats who supported it -- and made the claim NRLC is working with a prominent pro-abortion group.
