Texas School Supt. Tells Atheists to Go Fly a Kite

The Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) is threatening a lawsuit over a covert audio recording of White Oak (Texas) High School Principal Dan Noll reading a Bible verse on the school intercom.  Superintendent Michael Gilbert confirmed to the FFRF that indeed the accusations are true and that Scripture and prayers will continue to be heard at the school because the U.S. Constitution ensures freedom OF religion.
"I am fully aware of the practice at the high school [of reading Bible verses] and will not pursue any action against our High School Principal or any other member of our faculty/staff . . . [working] to ensure our students experience a morally sound, positive character based education. There are a multitude of options to provide our students, faculty and staff the opportunity to express their First Amendment Rights as provided for in the United States Constitution. Let me also be clear that we have not (in my opinion) violated anyone's rights and/or subjected anyone to undue stress. Bible studies and scriptures are allowed in schools."

The White Oak High School student, who would not reveal their identity, turned the recordings of Principal Dan Noll over to Hemant Mehta, a blogger and self-proclaimed atheist activist.

Former White Oak students tell KETK this has gone on for years, even back in the 70's, and they have no problem with it. They say it creates a positive energy and mood to kick off the school day.

According to Mehta [owner of blog The Friendly Atheist], he has reached out to Principal Noll and the Freedom From Religion Foundation and is awaiting comment.

Since KETK’s report of Superintendent Michael Gilbert’s response to the organization, there has been an outpouring of support for the district on social media.

One former White Oak student said “This is a first amendment right and the FFRF and local atheists are taking the rights away from not just students, teachers, and staff, but Christians in general.”

Another comment said, “I stand with Mike Gilbert and all others who stand up for God, Christ and his message of freedom in the good news that Jesus saves!”

Gilbert declined to comment beyond his written statement to avoid any more publicity to the Freedom From Religion Foundation.

Mehta, who first gained fame “selling his soul” on eBay, gave the recordings to the FFRF, which sent a letter on March 5 demanding the district cease. . . .

[FFRF Staff Attorney Sam Grover] said this is not the FFRF’s first dealings with White Oak ISD. The group sent a similar letter in October of last year, demanding that coaches cease praying with sports teams before games and broadcasting prayers during. Acting as spokesman for the district, Gilbert responded that on the day in question, “there was no coach-led prayer in the dressing room. There was no prayer over the public address system.”

Grover says the FFRF will pursue further legal action if its demands are not fulfilled.

"My recommended response to the Freedom From Religion Foundation is, 'I'm sorry you feel that way. I will be praying for you and your staff daily,' " he said. "As a Christian brother, it will not promote the values we hold so dear to assail those that disagree with the gospel. We will state our case. We will make sure our rights are just as protected as anyone else that lives in this great country. Abortion Access Would Reduce Poverty Rate: Study

In an analysis of "unintended childbearing," Richard Reeves and Joanna Ventor of the Brookings Institution conclude that low income women would yield fewer live births if they properly used contraceptives and if abortion were made more freely available to them. They reported that while one-third of the unborn children of wealthy single women do not survive pregnancy, over 90% of poor single women's children survive to birth.
The Planned Parenthood-associated Guttmacher Institute reports that "unintended childbearing" costs taxpayers $21 billion annually.

-- From "The sex lives of rich and poor women are remarkably similar — until it comes to birth control" by Danielle Paquette, Washington Post 3/9/15

Poor women are five times as likely as affluent women to have an unintended birth, new research from the Brookings Institution shows — and that drives inequality.

The Brookings study examined fertility outcomes of 3,885 single women, none of whom were trying to get pregnant. Those with incomes below the poverty line were twice as likely to have sex without protection as those with incomes four times the poverty line, data from the National Survey of Family Growth showed.

Wealthier women who face unplanned pregnancies were also far more likely to have abortions.

Researchers reported a financial barrier to safe procedures is the primary deterrent. Equalizing abortion rates, they calculate, could reduce the unintended birth ratio by a third.

To read the entire article above, CLICK HERE.

From "Why Do Poor Women Have More Abortions?" by Amanda Marcotte, Slate 3/2/15

Using economic modeling, [Brookings] found that if poorer women had the same access to contraception as more well-off women, it would cut the birth rate for single women living in poverty in half. Doing the same for abortion would also have a dramatic impact, reducing the birth rate from 72 births per 1,000 women to 49. Of course, the real solution would be to make both contraception and abortion accessible to lower-income women, which would probably result in their unintended birth rate coming very close to what it is for higher-income women.

One of the peculiar facts the Brookings Institution pulls out is that the abortion rate is higher for the highest income bracket they looked at, which was 400 percent of the poverty rate. Single women who make $47,000 or more a year abort 32 percent of their pregnancies, whereas single women making $11,670 a year or less abort only 8.6 percent of their pregnancies. Women in the middle abort 11 percent of their pregnancies. That may seem hard to square with data from the Guttmacher Institute that shows that the majority of abortions are obtained by women living in or near poverty: Nearly 70 percent of abortions are for women who make 200 percent or less of the federal poverty line.

How can it be true that middle-class single women abort nearly one-third of their pregnancies, but lower-income women, who abort a smaller percentage of their pregnancies, still make up most of patients sitting in abortion clinic waiting rooms on any given day? The answer is simple: Lower-income single women get pregnant way more often. Way more often.

From "Study Claims Rich Women Have More Abortions Than Poor Women, But is That True?" by Sarah Zagorski, LifeNews.com 3/5/15

[Brookings] continued, “Control of fertility varies widely between income groups. Most unmarried women are sexually active, regardless of income. But women with higher incomes are much more successful at ensuring that sex does not lead to an accidental baby. This almost certainly reflects their brighter economic and labor market prospects: simply put, they have more to lose from an unintended birth.”

Bradley Mattes, the executive director of Life Issues Institute, commented on the data and said, “These census results clearly show that Planned Parenthood continues to pursue the eugenics philosophy of its founder, Margaret Sanger, who believed that Blacks and the poor were “unfit” to reproduce. She dedicated her life to controlling the population of these “undesirables” by advancing birth control and sterilization in their neighborhoods. Later, the legalization of abortion gave Planned Parenthood an effective and lucrative means for furthering this eugenics agenda. Although Planned Parenthood denies it, these maps [of abortion clinic locations] show conclusively that they continue to target minorities for abortion.”

Additionally, Margaret Sanger once said that women in poor areas of the world should have “no more babies.” And in September 2014, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg sounded just like Sanger when she said, “It makes no sense as a national policy to promote birth only among poor people.” She also admitted that she backed Roe to eliminate “populations that we don’t want to have too many of.”

From "Why Poor Women with Unintended Pregnancies Are Less Likely to Get Abortions" by Amber Lapp, Family Studies 3/10/15

I was surprised to see that one additional explanation was missing from the study: women’s beliefs and attitudes about abortion. Is it possible that poor women are more pro-life than their affluent peers, and that these beliefs also contribute to the differences in abortion rates?

There is some national survey data that suggests this might be the case. For example, one RAND report found that “The higher the education and income levels of a respondent, the more likely he or she is to support the liberal end of the abortion spectrum, and vice versa,” and a 2012 Gallup poll revealed the same trend applies to identifying as pro-choice. When asked if the government should fund abortion services for poor women, those in the lowest income bracket were no more supportive than other respondents, RAND found.

It’s possible that there is a greater stigma against unintentional childbearing for more affluent women, who are expected by their friends and family to finish college and find a stable job before having children. (A related stat is that 76 percent of adolescents with highly educated mothers indicate that they would be embarrassed by a teenage pregnancy, compared to 61 percent of adolescents with moderately educated mothers and 48 percent of adolescents with mothers who did not graduate from high school.)

Interestingly enough, the poor and working-class women I interviewed were less likely than their more privileged peers to bring up financial instability as a reason for abortion. This may be because it is the norm for them to see other women with few resources raising children and somehow getting by. . . .

Booting Navy Chaplain Submarined by Homosexual Spy

Chaplain Lt. Cmdr. Wes Modder is facing possible expulsion after a same-sex "married" homosexual Navy officer landed an assignment as Modder's assistant in November and documented the Chaplain's Biblical Christian beliefs, which the Navy has now deemed unfit for the “diverse and pluralistic environment” of President Obama's new military.
“This new generation [of the military] is very secular and very open sexually. The values that the military once held – just like the Boy Scouts of America – are changing. The culture wants this. Culture is colliding with truth. That’s at the heart of this. . . . I need to stand up for righteousness and this is something I cannot walk away from.”

The Liberty Institute says Chaplain Wes Modder (MAH’-der), an ordained Assemblies of God minister, has received decorations and was called “the best of the best” by the commander [Capt. Jon R. Fahs] now seeking to administer discipline. Modder is based at South Carolina’s U.S. Navy Joint Base Charleston Goose Creek.

Liberty Institute attorney Mike Berry says the range of punishment Modder faces could be career ending. Modder is eligible for a 20-year retirement in September.

According to Berry, the Navy has requested that Modder be barred from promotion, fired from his job as chaplain, and brought before a military Board of Inquiry, where he could be forced out of the Navy.

From "Chaplain Accused Of Intolerance, May Be Booted From Navy" by Jonah Bennett, Reporter, Daily Caller News Foundation 3/9/15

. . . in December, Equal Opportunity representatives paid Modder a visit, delivering a five-page complaint, which detailed concerns about Modder’s views on marriage, pre-marital sex and masturbation, among other things. Modder was immediately removed from duties, with no defense allowed.

Berry has decided to take up the case and represent the chaplain. Both believe the charges are bogus, and in fact, Berry stated that the officer who accused Modder may be held criminally liable for making false statements and abusing his position.

The whole debacle reminded Modder of an incident which occurred when he first arrived at the Naval Nuclear Power Training Command in South Carolina and was preparing to deliver a speech at a graduation ceremony.

According to Modder, the captain quickly pulled him aside, “looked at [him] and said, ‘Hey chaplain – do not pray in Jesus’ name.’”

From "Former SEALs chaplain could be kicked out of Navy for Christian beliefs" by Todd Starnes, FoxNews.com 3/9/15

“On multiple occasions he discriminated against students who were of different faiths and backgrounds,” the Chaplain’s commanding Officer Capt. Jon R. Fahs wrote in a memorandum obtained by Fox News.

“They want chaplains to be glorified summer camp counselors and not speak truth and love into people’s lives,” Berry told me. “There are some anti-religious elements in our military. Anytime somebody wants to live their faith out – there are people who say that is offensive.”

Modder said the young officer [spy] had only been working with him for about a month and would constantly pepper him with questions pertaining to homosexuality. He had no idea that the officer was in fact gay – and married to another man.

“His five page letter of complaint was unconscionable,” Modder said. “He said I had a behavioral pattern of being anti-discriminatory of same sex orientation.”

“I believe some of what the lieutenant [spy] has alleged could constitute a military crime – false statements – taking what the chaplain said and twisting or misconstruing it – in an attempt to get the chaplain punished,” [Berry] said. “He abused the position he was placed in as a chaplain’s assistant.”

He believes the officer may have gained access to private counseling file[s].

From "Navy Threatens To End 19-Year Career Of Decorated Chaplain Who Served Navy SEAL Teams, According To Liberty Institute Liberty Institute Defends Chaplain Wes Modder's Exemplary Record of Military Service and His Constitutional Right of Religious Expression" posted at PRNewswire-USNewswire 3/9/15

. . . The Navy has requested that Modder be barred from promotion, fired from his job as chaplain, and brought before a military Board of Inquiry, where he could be forced out of the Navy. Modder is only months away from his twentieth anniversary of active military service.

Modder previously served as the Force chaplain for Naval Special Warfare Command. He has deployed overseas multiple times during the War on Terror, including in support of DEVGRU and other SEAL teams in high-profile operations around the globe. He has received the highest possible ratings by his former commanders, who have commanded DEVGRU, SEAL Teams, and Naval Special Warfare Command.

In its response letter, Liberty Institute attorneys assert that censoring Chaplain Modder's religious expression is unconstitutional religious discrimination. They note that federal law and military regulations forbid the Navy from punishing a chaplain because they act according to their faith. Liberty Institute also requests that the Navy allow Chaplain Modder to return to serving his sailors according to his faith.

From "Planet Fitness Welcomes Men in Women’s Locker Room But Not Women Who Object" by Laurie Higgins, Illinois Family Institute 3/9/15

How, pray tell, do club managers verify the “sincerity” of a male member’s or guest’s claim that he wishes to be a woman? And why does sincerity of desire about one’s sex trump the objective state of one’s sex?

How will gym staff know with certainty that a male member or guest is not suffering from a disorder different from gender dysphoria? Perhaps instead of gender dysphoria, the member or guest is suffering from the paraphilia of voyeurism or exhibitionism. Come to think of it, why should Planet Fitness privilege gender dysphoria over other sexuality-related disorders?

How very judgmental and unwelcoming of Planet Fitness to prohibit those who identify as exhibitionists and voyeurs from accessing women’s locker rooms. If gender-confused men are permitted to be in the presence of naked women, why shouldn’t voyeurs be permitted to be in the presence of naked women?

Why shouldn’t exhibitionists be permitted to expose themselves to women? If women are forced to see the exposed members of gender-confused members, why shouldn’t they be compelled to see the exposed members of those who experience unwanted, unchosen exhibitionist desires?

And why can’t those who experience apodysophilia exercise in the nude or “diaper fetishists” parade around in Pampers?

Many people are rightly concerned about the possibility that men who don’t suffer from gender-confusion will exploit this inanity in order to access women’s private facilities with permission and peep with impunity. Others worry about assaults by both genuinely gender-confused men or wicked men who have the appearance of sincerely gender-confused men.

It should be noted that girls as young as 13 can join Planet Fitness and enjoy their “no judgment zones.”

Gay Indoctrination Mandated at George Wash. Univ.

After the George Washington University Student Association voted to mandate "LGBT sensitivity training" for all student organizations, the Young America's Foundation (YAF) indicated that it hopes to be exempted on the basis of the Christian faith of their members; but Allied in Pride, the campus homosexualist student group, screamed that such resistance to the gay indoctrination program constitutes hate and therefore YAF must be defunded.
“Mandated training is not really being tolerant of all religious beliefs. The way people who are deeply Christian behave is for a reason, and if you’re training them to change that behavior, there’s obviously a problem with that.”

The GW Student Association voted in favor of a series of bills last month that would publish a list of gender-neutral bathrooms and add a gender-neutral option to all office forms, in addition to the mandatory sensitivity training for student organizations.

[Allied in Pride] argues that because Young America’s Foundation is a political organization and not explicitly religious, it should not be allowed to seek an exemption. Jashinsky told the Hatchet that certain aspects of the training, such as promoting the use of alternative gender-neutral pronouns, would be incongruent with some members’ religious beliefs.

Allied in Pride recently issued an “Allied in Pride Queer Guide” at the school providing a list of preferred “non-binary prounouns,” such as “they/them,” “ze/hir” and “xe/xir.”

It also called YAF’s refusal to use preferred gender pronouns “an act of violence” and a violation of the GW non-discrimination clause.

“Like most universities, in order to be ‘inclusive,’ GW must exclude students who disagree with prevailing leftist ideas that are pushed by the administration, faculty, and other liberal student groups,” he said in a statement.

With 2 ½ hours of oral arguments set for April 28, the Supreme Court could issue a ruling later this year that could overturn the bans or leave them in place, which would upset a patchwork of laws and court decisions that currently allow same-sex couples to marry in 37 states and the District of Columbia.

While many of the briefs came from groups who have long fought to have the bans reversed, support also came from more unexpected sources: More than 300 Republican, conservative and center-right activists and government officials signed a brief in support of overturning the bans. Another brief was signed by hundreds of U.S. companies, including Johnson & Johnson, Apple, Microsoft and more.

They ranged from the American Bar Association — which included a table of the many legal protections afforded legally married couples and their children that are denied same-sex couples and their families — to universities, organizations representing gay service members, Ohio's Cuyahoga County, the Commonwealth of Virginia and more.

"Inconsistent state marriage laws impose an added economic burden on American businesses at an estimated cost of over one billion dollars per year," said the brief filed by 379 signers, which included insurance companies, manufacturing giants, financial institutions and sports franchises, the New England Patriots, San Francisco Giants and Tampa Bay Rays among them.

Such laws force businesses to uphold discriminatory laws that run counter to important corporate values. In the end, economic growth suffers."

Jeb Bush called for respect from all sides. “I hope that we can show respect for the good people on all sides of the gay and lesbian marriage issue — including couples making lifetime commitments to each other who are seeking greater legal protections and those of us who believe marriage is a sacrament and want to safeguard religious liberty,” he said.

From "Over 300 Republicans Petition Supreme Court to Legalize Gay Marriage" by Anugrah Kumar, Christian Post Contributor 3/7/15

Christian groups say the people and their elected representatives, and not unelected judges, should decide if states should legally recognize gay marriage, which is legal in 36 states and the District of Columbia.

Central to the case are two questions, whether states are required to license marriages between same-sex couples under the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, which the Michigan case has to decide; and whether the amendment requires states to recognize such marriages when licensed by other states – which the Ohio and Tennessee cases have to decide. The Kentucky case includes both.

Russell Moore, president of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission . . . [said] this case could potentially transform the cultural landscape of America.

"We should pray for the Court, that they will not seek to redefine marriage," he said. "Marriage was not created by government action, and shouldn't be re-created by government action. Even more than that, we should pray for churches who will know how to articulate and embody a Christian vision of marriage as the one flesh union of a man and a woman in the tumultuous years to come."

Florida Underground Churches Exposed in City Sting

The City of Lake Worth, Florida has dispatched undercover agents to attend gatherings of citizens suspected of engaging in unlicensed Christian worship services.
“I walked back to the Coffee Bar and was able to visualize, in my opinion what appeared to be a ministry in progress. . . . People holding what appeared to be bibles or religious books as one had a cross on it. . . . I was approached by an unknown man with a cross around his neck.”

-- From "War on religion? Lake Worth orders churches to have license to pray" by Kathleen Walter, WPEC-CBS12TV (West Palm Beach, FL) 2/26/15

At the Common Ground Coffee Bar in Lake Worth, Pastor Mike Olive--the owner--holds two religious services on Sundays that he says city officials are trying to stop.

He says a notice was sent to his landlord that the coffee bar doesn't have the permits to operate as a religious institution. Pastor Mike Olive said, “We had one gentleman come in from the city wearing a hoodie, and he was hiding the camera in the pockets of his hoodie.”

The nearby First Baptist Church paid the almost $500 inspection and use of occupancy fees. CBS12 asked city councilmember Christopher McVoy if this is a business tax? McVoy responded, “I can't tell you the exact answer on that. It's not a business tax, but there will be a fee involved.” CBS12 investigated if this is in line with other municipalities. In the Village of North Palm Beach, churches are exempt from a business tax and are subjected to a $50-to-$75 fire inspection fee.

From "Liberty Counsel: City Can’t Make Churches Pay to Pray" by Margaret Menge, The Lake Worth Tribune 2/28/15

In the letter [to City Manager Michael Bornstein] from Liberty Counsel, attorney Richard Mast refers to the city’s “egregious treatment” of Common Ground Church.

“The City has inexplicably targeted CG Church for investigation, despite the fact that CG Church has made no secret of its weekly worship and other meetings since the Coffee Bar opened in November 2014 (and prior thereto, when CG Church met for six months at the same location run by the previous secular coffee bar).”

The letter [from the City to the property owner], Mast writes, cites the church’s lack of a “license,” requests that the “violation” be corrected by March 2 or a hearing would be held April 30 before the Special Magistrate and also threatens the property owner with fines of $200-$500 a day and potential foreclosure action if the property owner does not “correct” the violation.

The [Liberty Counsel] letter specifically refers to Commissioner Andy Amoroso, who owns a newsstand and gay pornography shop on Lake Avenue, and his conversation a few weeks back with Pastor Mike Olive, in which Olive says Amoroso pointed at him and said, of the coffee bar: “You better not have a church there. That better not be a church.”

Mark Woods, the manager of the city’s Code Compliance Department, told the Tribune last week that the code action regarding Common Grounds Coffee Bar was the result of an anonymous complaint. William Waters [who oversees the building and code compliance departments] told the Tribune last week that the code compliance officer was sent to investigate the coffee shop because of “several” anonymous complaints. E-mails obtained by the Tribune in a public records request show that William Waters was alerting staff about the church in September, well before the coffee shop opened, writing, “We need to look into the church that is growing down the street along the east side of the South J Street between Lake and 1st” and stating that “a lot of downtown people” are concerned about it.

From "Florida city wages soviet-style crackdown on churches" by Todd Starnes, FoxNews.com 3/5/15

Pastor Mike Olive told me there had not been any problems until early last month, when he had an encounter with Andy Amoroso, a city commissioner.

“After we opened up the coffee bar and started doing services, I heard that he told people we were anti-gay,” Olive said. “So I went to his shop to ask him about that. . . . He pointed at me and said, ‘Listen, you better not have a church down there.”

“Government employees are public servants and prohibited by the Constitution from inhibiting religious freedom,” said Mat Staver, founder of the religious liberty law firm Liberty Counsel. “That is a far cry from sneaking around and into a church and acting like KGB agents.”

Staver is calling on city leaders to immediately rescind the business license mandate on churches. He is also representing Common Ground Church, the congregation that was targeted by the city’s investigator.

Staver said the city’s actions violate the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, the Florida Constitution, the Florida Religious Freedom Restoration Act and the federal Religious Land Uses and Institutionalized Persons Act.

From "Lake Worth denies targeting churches, but paper trail says it did" by Vanessa Garcia Rodriguez, Christian Examiner 3/6/15

Lake Worth officials are denying claims they threatened local churches with fines and foreclosures if they did not possess business licenses.

A letter to City Manager Michael Bornstein by the Orlando-based non-profit Liberty Counsel on behalf of Common Ground Church referenced the city's request for a business license "by March 2, 2015, or a hearing would be held April 30, 2015 before the Special Magistrate."

Now the city says Common Ground Church does not require a "business license" -- which requires payment of a business tax from which churches are exempt -- and that the congregation only needs a use and occupancy (U&O) certificate (for "safety purposes") apart from that of the 2,500 square foot coffee bar.

City Manager, Mike Bornstein, told Raw Story the dispute apparently was a misunderstanding and produced a letter from the city to Olive relaying that information.

Sexual Deviancy Special Class? Not in Charlotte NC

After contentious lengthy debate with massive citizen attendance and participation, the Charlotte, North Carolina City Council, by a 6-5 vote, rejected a proposed new ordinance for protections of homosexuals, transgenders, etc. (to make them a special class above other citizens).  In 2012, former City Manager Curt Walton unilaterally created special privileges for LGBT employees, but that policy does NOT apply to the general public.
“I will not and I cannot support an amendment that does not protect all of our [sexually deviant] citizens.”
-- Councilwoman LaWana Mayfield (Democrat)

“To support this law is to be a bully. We as adults in this city have a right to protect our children. … This process is corrupt. We are telling the City Council: We know your dirty business.”
-- Jason Jimenez, resident

“I will not be silenced. A man’s right to choose the lady’s room is ridiculous and it’s dangerous.”

-- From "Charlotte council rejects LGBT protections measure before a large, contentious crowd" by Jen Wilson, Associate Editor, Charlotte Business Journal 3/3/15

In an often-heated meeting that stretched until nearly midnight and included more than 100 speakers, Charlotte City Council narrowly rejected an amended ordinance that would have provided protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals in public spaces.

A deeply divided crowd filled the meeting chambers as well as an overflow room as speaker after speaker took a turn at the microphone, each making an impassioned plea for the council to vote a particular way. And that's after hundreds had rallied for hours before the meeting started Monday evening and thousands had sent emails to the council members.

The original proposal would have updated the city's existing nondiscrimination ordinance for commercial and transportation-for-hire enterprises and public accommodations, adding five new protected characteristics — marital status, familial status, sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression. In addition, transgender individuals would be allowed to choose which restroom, locker room or shower to use in public places.

From "Charlotte LGBT ordinance fails 6-5 in contentious meeting" by Ely Portillo and Mark Price, Charlotte Observer 3/3/15

Before the final vote, council members had removed the section of the ordinance that would have allowed transgender people to use the bathroom of the gender they identify with. That issue drew the most vigorous opposition from dozens of speakers.

But even with the bathroom portion removed, council remained divided. Several council members had said they were opposed to removing that part, which would also have applied to locker rooms and showers, because it weakened the ordinance.

Mayfield and Autry, also a Democrat, voted against removing the bathroom section, and both voted against the final bill because they couldn’t support a half measure.

The final vote against the bill brought together both supporters and opponents of the original measure. [Kenny] Smith, a Republican, said he believed the bill was motivated not by a desire to end discrimination but by a political agenda to “impose the progressive left’s new morality on our citizens.”

Council members Michael Barnes, Kenny Smith, LaWana Mayfield, Ed Driggs, John Autry and Greg Phipps voted against it. Voting in favor of the ordinance were David Howard, Claire Fallon, Vi Lyles, Patsy Kinsey and Al Austin, all Democrats.

On Sunday, [Nancy Kraft, pastor at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church] told congregants she just doesn't understand how anyone could oppose the measure. "It feels mean and hateful to me," and added, "what makes me crazier is seeing such injustice being perpetrated by people who claim to follow Jesus."

Last week, Reverend Mark Harris at First Baptist Church in Charlotte said the city council is "trying to make protected classes out of purely abnormal behavior."

Both Reverend Harris and Pastor Kraft have done more than just preach to their faithful. They are both activists on this issue. Both have joined dozens of other clergy members in signing letters to the city council either for or against the expansion of the non-discrimination ordinance.

. . . Tami Fitzgerald, executive director of the North Carolina Values Coalition, a group opposed to the measure [said,] "It leads to religious discrimination by the city because it automatically discriminates and excludes businesses that have religious beliefs."

From "Policy gives city of Charlotte transgender employees bathroom choice" by Steve Harrison, Charlotte Observer 3/4/15

City of Charlotte policies [in place since 2012] prohibit discrimination against transgender employees, which allows them to use the bathroom of their choice on the job. The same goes for job applicants.

But those protections don’t always extend to nonemployees using public Government Center bathrooms, highlighting the complexities of the issue.

Lisa Metzger, 38, a wife and mother of 11 who lives in Matthews, said she alerted a police officer Monday night that transgender women were using the women’s restroom during the City Council meeting.

She even videotaped some of them, which Metzger says she showed police to prompt officers to stop the activity.

From "For Gay Rights Advocates, No Time To Rest After Charlotte Decision" by Paul Garber, WFDD-FM88.5 (Winston-Salem, NC) 3/4/15

It’s been a roller-coaster year across the state for gay rights advocates and opponents. In January, Greensboro became the first city in the state to pass a housing non-discrimination measure that includes protections for gays and transgendered people.

Chris Sgro is executive director of the gay and transgender advocacy group Equality NC, and a resident of Greensboro. He says even though the Charlotte measure failed to pass, he believes other cities across the state will continue to push for anti-discrimination policies.

“I still think the fact that we had that conversation with a majority of the Charlotte City Council and got them to a place where they want to provide these protections is going to provide pressure for other parts of the state – municipalities across the state – to consider protections for gay and trans folks.”

Harvesting Aborted Organs for Human Transplant

While organ transplantations have more than doubled in the past 20 years, and available organ donations have increased at an even greater rate, the number of patients on waiting lists has more than quintupled.  Now a new company is publishing research with a solution to the organ shortage: grow aborted fetus organs in living animals for eventual transplantation to humans.
"If the [fetal] organs are available, it is better to use them to save somebody's life rather than throw them into the trash bin."
-- Eugene Gu, CEO of Ganogen, Inc., Redwood City, CA

A shortage of organs means a shortage of organs from human donors, and in the years to come, non-human organs may be used to fill the gap. Known as xenotransplantation, the idea of grafting organs from non-human animals to human patients is not new, but historically, it’s been essentially a surgical research tool.

As the technology has advanced, researchers have begun developing a technique that could get more kidneys to people who need transplants. But the method is controversial: It is now feasible to remove a kidney from an aborted human fetus and implant the organ into a rat, where the kidney can grow to a larger size. It’s possible that further work could find a way to grow kidneys large enough that they could be transplanted into a person, the researchers said, although much more research is needed to determine whether this could be done.

“Our long-term goal is to grow human organs in animals, to end the human donor shortage,” said study co-author Eugene Gu, a medical student at Duke University and the founder and CEO of Ganogen, Inc., a biotech company in Redwood City, California.

As for how people feel about xenotransplanation, a poll conducted at the turn of the century found 71 percent of the public saying that they would consider xenotransplantation for a family member, if no human organ match were available. But there is also the animal rights objection.

From "Kidney Harvested From Aborted Human Fetus Grown In Rat: An End To Organ Donor Shortage, Scientists Say" by Susan Scutti, Medical Daily 1/23/15

“We feel that our research is more palatable than all the other researchers who use taxpayer money to fund their research involving aborted human fetal tissues, which is the vast majority of major biomedical research labs,” Gu tells Medical Daily. In fact, Gu and his research team acquired the fetal kidneys used in their experiments from Stem Express, a self-described “multi-million dollar company that supplies human blood, tissue products, primary cells, and other clinical specimens to biomedical researchers around the world.”

“We did this study in rats as proof-of-concept to show that human fetal organs can indeed survive in an animal host, can function to keep the animal alive, and can grow larger over time,” Gu says. Indeed: the rats survived roughly four months after the transplant, and one even lived for 10 months.

Among the ethical questions raised by Gu's work is whether the use of human fetal organs in research should be permissible and whether it is right to transplant human organs into animals. The Ganogen website argues that, as personalized medicine advances and becomes increasingly prevalent, “the differences between mice and men can no longer be ignored.” The reason? Simple animal testing of new drugs, which increasingly target highly specific proteins or genetic variations, cannot sufficiently safeguard our human health. The drug Herceptin is their case in point. This commonly prescribed breast cancer drug caused heart failure in some patients after extensive animal testing proved it safe.

From "Aborted baby organs to be used to grow transplants for medical patients" by Ethan A. Huff, Staff Writer, Natural News 3/3/15

Set to be published in the American Journal of Transplantation, a study on the process shows that it is entirely possible to cultivate living organs inside the bodies of animals. Whether these synthetically derived organs will be accepted by the bodies of actual human donors is still unknown, but researchers believe that the concept is promising for achieving their goals.

After obtaining human fetal kidneys from Stem Express, a California-based company that supplies researchers with various tissues harvested from both dead babies and adults, Gu and his colleagues implanted them into rats deliberately bred without immune systems. If the rats had had immune systems, their bodies likely would have rejected the foreign organs.

Earlier research has attempted to grow immature human kidneys in the abdomens of mice, but this latest study represents the first time that whole organs have been successfully sown inside animals. If the process proves to be successful on a larger scale, it forebodes a future in which aborted human babies become a commercial commodity for companies to capitalize on artificial organ development.

From "Scientists grow kidneys of aborted babies in animals" by Bob Unruh, World Net Daily 3/3/15

A video by Ganogen glosses over the source of the organs by euphemistically calling them “discarded.” But obtaining viable human organs requires working in concert with abortion businesses.

Ganogen says it already is working on the processes for kidney transplants as well as human fetal heart transplantation.

Jim Sedlak, spokesman for the American Life League, the largest grassroots Catholic pro-life movement in the U.S., called the transplant program “totally immoral” and “another outlandish use of aborted babies to produce results that humans think are good.”

“We are totally opposed to any use of aborted cells from human beings to grow organs or for any other purpose,” he said. “Someone died in order for these organs to be grown.”

SC Seminary: Homosexuality Sinful — Media Outraged

As courts have now imposed same-sex "marriage" on South Carolina, Erskine College, a small private Christian college in Due West, SC, has publicly reiterated the Biblical position on homosexuality a year after two students made their homosexual behavior public.  Erskine offers liberal arts undergraduate studies and a graduate theological seminary.
Erskine College exists to glorify God . . . in a Christ-centered environment where learning and biblical truth are integrated to develop the whole person.
-- Mission Statement (excerpt)

We believe the Bible teaches that monogamous marriage between a man and a woman is God’s intended design for humanity and that sexual intimacy has its proper place only within the context of marriage.
We believe the Bible teaches that all sexual activity outside the covenant of marriage is sinful and therefore ultimately destructive to the parties involved. As a Christian academic community, and in light of our institutional mission, members of the Erskine community are expected to follow the teachings of scripture concerning matters of human sexuality and institutional decisions will be made in light of this position.

The document, titled “Statement on Human Sexuality,” was submitted by the Student Services and Athletic Committee and adopted by the board of trustees last Friday.

The statement will now be added to the school’s official manuals and used to further make procedural rulings, according to an article posted to Erskine’s official Web site on Thursday.

It is unclear how the newly adopted statement will affect student life going forward; however, Erskine said in a followup statement on Friday that the new language “does not ‘ban’ any individual or class of individuals from attending Erskine.”

Reaction from those outside the college has been mostly negative, as well, with many taking to Twitter to denounce what they see as a step in the wrong direction in a state that has already legalized gay marriage.
