Tenn. School Defies Gay Agenda Intimidation Tactic

Despite state-wide and national pressure by threatening homosexualists, the Franklin County (Tennessee) School Board stood firm this week and voted just shy of unanimity to require parental approval of any student admittance to extracurricular clubs, which is likely to terminate the newly-created Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) club.
"For my children, myself and what I truly believe is the majority of residents in Franklin County, I will not be browbeaten, threatened or bullied into compromising my values or belief system."

Critics have called for clubs with religious or sexual intents to not be allowed at public schools, while supporters have said the club provides a safe place for people to be themselves that can only be provided in an extracurricular setting.

The new opt-in policy would likely require major efforts and paperwork to enforce the policy in the county, said Chris Sanders, the executive director of Tennessee Equality Project, which has been following the debate.

State law allows parents to opt their children out of extracurricular activities. The Franklin County rules would require a signed and dated form from a parent or guardian before the student could become a member of the club or organization.

The school board also approved a policy that would allow a school principal to revoke a club's status if the organization failed to "comply with board policy and administrative standards."

The controversy over the club has filled the past several School Board meetings.

[Board Member Chris] Guess said Monday the circumstances had become personally threatening toward him through emails he has received about the issue. He said his job status and livelihood were brought into question over his stance about requiring parents to opt their children into extracurricular clubs.

He said the Gay-Straight Alliance Club was founded over a concern about bullying, yet the tactics being used by supporters against those in opposition were, in essence, bullying.

Dr. Amie Lonas, the school system’s director, said working out the details to implement the change could take several months, but the new policy should be fully in place by July 1 when the school system’s new fiscal year begins.

At a school board meeting [in February], resident Robert Widelick took to the microphone and said he doubted the [GSA] agenda that he claims they're trying to impose on people who attend their meetings.

"There's really no place for discussion of sexual orientation in a public high school," Widelick said.

Dozens of supporters stood up, cheered and waved towels and signs after Widelick shared his opinion at the meeting.

Franklin County Schools Director Amie Lonas said the [GSA] organization, which was created to promote tolerance and acceptance, followed the proper procedure to establish the club. Students say it was really largely done in response to bullying. The group was granted approval to form by school officials in December.

. . . On social media, a page was created in mid-January to call for members of the Franklin County School Board to move the club off campus because of its controversial nature.

“Schools are for learning the basics we need to get a job after high school or get a secondary education,” said Chris Ball, a parent with children in Franklin County Schools. “We’re here to teach subjects, not to promote certain ways of life.”

Students had been trying to form a [LGBT advocacy] group for weeks, though it wasn’t until [faculty adviser Jennie] Turrell signed onto the group as a sponsor that the organizations finally gained momentum . . . Turrell said she’s received stacks of letters from supporters from states across the country that she’s been able to show students.

The Middle Tennessee chapter of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network [GLSEN] also plans to have 20 people carpool to Winchester to attend the rally and meeting to support students in the club, said Justin Sweatman-Weaver, the Middle Tennessee chapter’s co-chair.

Abstinence Education Illegal in Calif, Judge Rules

Fresno County (California) Superior Court Judge Donald Black struck down the Clovis Unified School District sex education program ruling that the curriculum denied students' public right to sexualization and Gay Agenda indoctrination, and did not completely train the children in "safe sex" performance, but rather encouraged abstinence as the most healthy and effective means to prevent pregnancy and disease.

-- From "Judge Rules Clovis Unified's Abstinence-Only Sex Ed Violated State Law" by Diana Aguilera, Valley Public Radio KVPR-FM89.3 (Fresno, CA) 5/13/15

The ruling stems from a lawsuit filed by a group of parents back in 2012. They claimed the district’s high school sex education classes taught abstinence as the only way to prevent pregnancy and ignored the topic of contraception.

Phyllida Burlingame with the ACLU [American Civil Liberties Union] says the ruling is a huge victory, and not just for students in Clovis.

From "Abstinence-only curriculum is not sex education, judge rules" by Bob Egelko, staff writer, San Francisco Chronicle 5/14/15

The state law requires school districts to make their sex-education programs “age-appropriate” and directs them to teach students, starting in the seventh grade, that abstinence from sex is the only sure way to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. But it also requires districts to provide “medically accurate information” on other methods, including all contraceptives approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

The law also requires public schools to teach students, in middle school and again in high school, about the dangers of HIV and AIDS and how they can be prevented.

A group of parents in Clovis filed suit in November 2012, saying the school district was using texts and videos that focused on abstinence and made little or no mention of contraceptives or claimed they were ineffective. One video, described in Black’s ruling, compared a woman who was not a virgin to a dirty shoe. Other videos “perpetuated sexual orientation bias,” the judge said, including one that encouraged students to adopt the mantra, “One man, one woman, one life.”

From "Judge Rules Against Abstinence-Only Sex Ed Program" by Mollie Reilly, The Huffington Post 5/13/15

"Given the high social cost of teen pregnancy and similar toll on society of HIV/ADIS [sic] and other sexually transmitted diseases, the rights vindicated by this suit, access to medically, and socially appropriate sexual education, is an important public right," [Judge] Black wrote.

"We continue to be confident that the District acted appropriately and that our former 9th grade curriculum was unbiased, more than 'abstinence only,' and legally compliant; and that the issues raised in plaintiffs’ litigation were not accurate," Kelly Avants, Clovis Unified's chief communication officer, wrote in an email to The Huffington Post. "We are currently considering whether to pursue an appeal of Judge Black’s ruling."

The parents filed suit in 2012, but dropped the case in 2014 after the school changed its policies. Black, however, ordered the school district to pay for the parents' legal fees, citing the legal action as the catalyst for change in the district.

From "Sex education for students is a public right, judge in California rules" by Hannah Furfaro, The Fresno Bee 5/14/15

Access to medically accurate and age-appropriate sex education is an important public right, Judge Donald Black has ruled, casting questions on the state’s current law, which does not require schools to teach comprehensive sex education in school.

The ruling, which hands a victory to two Clovis Unified parents, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Gay-Straight Alliance Network, also makes it crystal clear that abstinence-only education violates California law.

Black’s decision closes the book on a three-year fight over whether Clovis Unified’s sex education curriculum met the letter of the 2004 Comprehensive Sexual Health and HIV/AIDS Prevention Education law. The ruling answers with a resounding “no” and concludes the district “violated California law for many years before the plaintiff parents began to complain, and that even years after the complaints began the district still had not changed its sex ed curriculum.”

Lesbian Seminar Teaching Kids How to be Homosexual

Pam Strong, a lesbian elementary school teacher, just completed a workshop to train public school teachers regarding encouraging children to accept homosexual relationships using the “power of conversation.”

“Difficult conversations are a part of what we do as teachers, right? And when these conversations are properly supported by teachers within the safety of the classroom, they provide a rich environment for our students as they unpack these complex social issues and they reflect on their own preconceptions, rights, of gender, sexuality, love, all these difference things,” [Pam Strong] said.

“I use current events, news articles, advertisement are great for gender, especially with kindergarten kids, pink and girl toys and all the rest of it. Commercials are great, I use one right now, the Honey Maid commercial,” she said.

She said she convinces children that homosexual duos are identical to a man-and-woman couple, LifeSite reported.

The conference, hosted by the homosexual activist organization Jer’s Vision, now called the Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity, focused on the implementation of Bill 13 in Ontario classrooms. Bill 13, called by critics the ‘homosexual bill of rights,’ passed in June 2012 and gave students the right to form pro-gay clubs in their school, including Catholic ones, using the name Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA).

Strong related an incident that happened last fall involving a new boy who had recently entered her grade 5 classroom. The new boy had not yet been made aware of Strong’s sexual preference for other women. . . . The new boy put his hands over his mouth and said, according to Strong: “Oh, my God, I think I’m going to puke.”

Strong told her workshop attendees that her “new little friend” is now a devoted champion of diversity. . . .

Strong called it “key” to develop a “positive classroom culture” — and she mentioned it often takes months — before getting into what she called “difficult conversations” with students about convincing students of the normality of her sexual preference for women.

. . . she convinces the kids that a gay-partnership is identical to a family made up of a male and female. Strong called it a “fantastic lesson for kids of all ages.”

Students Demand Catholic School Hire Gay Teacher

Mainstream media have glommed on to students' fervor at Dowling Catholic High School in West Des Moines, Iowa who are protesting the Diocese of Des Moines decision to not hire Tyler McCubbin as a full-time teacher because he is publicly engaged to "marry" another man, even though McCubbin had worked at the school as a substitute teacher and coach in the past.  Iowa is a state that recognizes homosexuals as a protected class by law, but churches and religious institutions are exempt.
"Our contracts contain specific language that outline the expected code of conduct in accord with long accepted Church teaching.  The Catholic faith is central to our mission, and in order to deliver on that mission, it is our expectation that staff and teachers support our moral beliefs."
-- Luvern Gubbels, Des Moines Catholic Schools superintendent

"I worry about losing quality [gay job candidates]. I want Dowling to stay a strong school."

Dowling [16-year-old] sophomore Grace Mumm helped organize the rally. She says the action will not lead to employment for Tyler McCubbin at Dowling. But she still thinks it delivers a message.

“Let the community know the decisions of our school leaders and our diocesan leaders do not directly reflect what the students believe," she says. "And, as you can see by the turnout, that’s kind of coming true.”

Dowling junior Delaney Dunne identified herself as bisexual as she addressed the crowd.

“I just don’t want students to feel like they aren’t welcomed at this school because there are closeted people everywhere who don’t feel accepted in the real world," she says. "And I just think at school you should feel safe and accepted.”

Des Moines Catholic Schools administrators said in a letter to parents Tuesday that a candidate wasn't offered a full-time position recently because the applicant's personal life "was at odds with Church teaching."

Des Moines diocese Bishop Richard Pates released a statement the same day explaining the Catholic Church "calls for us to accept those with same-sex tendencies," but also teaches that "marriage is a sacrament between a man and a woman."

Many attendees at the walkout voiced their support for those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender at Dowling and beyond. Some of the speakers identified as LGBT themselves.

"Just in terms of employment discrimination laws, religious institutions can in fact discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation," said Paul Gowder, associate law professor at the University of Iowa. "Whether that's a good idea or not is another question entirely." [He] predicted there will be "a serious ethical and legal debate as we move in time" over the rights of a religious institution to discriminate against someone because of his or her sexual orientation.

"I'm concerned about the notion that the message that we are sending allows a religious school to discriminate against gays and lesbians," he said.

"Are we going see more of this? I think we are, undoubtedly," said Mark Kende, director of Drake University's Constitutional Law Center. [He] agreed that the issue will continue to simmer, particularly as more states allow same-sex marriage.

And, he said, there eventually could be movement by the courts.

Students at Dowling Catholic High School are asking administrators to show their support for youth who are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender by forming a gay-straight alliance at the school.

The show of solidarity has helped several Dowling students feel comfortable enough to come out to their peers, and students plan on wearing rainbow-colored clothes Friday to continue the effort.

"We have had ongoing discussions related to this issue for the last several years," the [school's] statement said. "Please know our conversations on how best to support all students is ongoing."

From "Students protest after Catholic high school won’t hire a gay teacher ‘engaged’ to another man" by Ben Johnson, LifeSiteNews.com 4/9/15

At the Wednesday rally, many students asked the school to become more gay-friendly by forming an LGBT Alliance group. Father Zach Kautzky told local media he is in an “ongoing talk” about the group's formation, but if it takes place, homosexual and bisexual students must “be encouraged to live in chastity, the life they are called to.”

But the record is not at all clear that Dowling Catholic High School is particularly anti-gay. Sources told LifeSiteNews that the school allowed the Eychaner Foundation, a tax-exempt organization dedicated to mainstreaming the acceptance of homosexual behavior, to present one of its 2014 Matthew Shepard Scholarships to a Dowling Catholic High School student, Danni WebbMausbach, at a school awards ceremony. WebbMausbach said she hopes to become a full-time employee of the homosexual lobby, and “eventually, when I am a lawyer, I want to help other people in the LGBTQ community with civil cases.”

McCubbin told local media that after school officials asked if he was in an open homosexual relationship and about to be “married,” he replied, “'Yes it’s true. I’ve been engaged for almost a year now.' And they said, 'Because of that, we can’t offer you the contract.'”

He called the school's reaction “shocking.”

Attorneys with Pacific Justice Institute sent a demand letter to attorneys for Acalanes High School late Wednesday over incidents last week where students were singled out and ostracized for their beliefs.  Students reported that, on Jan. 29, members of the school’s Queer Straight Alliance (QSA) took over all freshmen English classes to grill students about their beliefs and their parents’ beliefs on LGBT issues.  The QSA had students step forward to demonstrate whether they believed that being gay was a choice and whether their parents would be accepting if they came out as gay. Students who did not step forward were ridiculed and humiliated.  The QSA also gave students a handout of LGBT terminology such as “pan-sexual,” “demi-sexual,” “gray gender,” and about a dozen other terms.  The QSA also had students line up to demonstrate where they fell on the “gender spectrum.”

. . . PJI further explained that the school’s actions violated the students’ constitutional privacy rights.  The letter demands that the school immediately cease the interrogations and suspend the QSA.  The letter also demands all public records associated with the events of Jan. 29, including e-mails from school officials who approved it.

He praised the efforts of Erin Hoffmann Harding, who in August became Notre Dame's vice president for student affairs, for moving the discussions forward. "Throughout this process, she's been in constant dialogue with other administrators and knows what students need," he said.

From "'The next step'" by John Cameron, The (Notre Dame) Observer 12/5/12

Though this is a historic decision in Notre Dame’s efforts to better serve a diverse student body, University President Fr. John Jenkins said the plan for the unnamed student organization is a natural progression of previous initiatives.

“In the 1990s, as I said, we created the Standing Committee [on Gay and Lesbian Student Needs]. In 2006, that was changed to the Core Council [for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Questioning Students], and various initiatives were undertaken in conjunction with those efforts,” he said. “I see this as the next step to be more effective.”

“The comprehensiveness of this not only being about the organization is a very important element to the entire thing because of the education, because of the awareness, because of the support and interaction with other University offices, we think this is a plan that we believe and hope will be much more than about one organization,” [Erin Hoffmann Harding] said.

While Jenkins said expanding the diversity at Notre Dame is part of the administration’s duties, he said the responsibility does not end at the steps of the Main Building.

“Diversity isn’t just about having a bunch of different people all in the same place. It really is about building a community,” he said.

From "Bishop Rhoades hopeful about Notre Dame's new student organization" posted at Catholic News Agency 12/7/12

Bishop Rhoades wrote that with the plan, Notre Dame “clearly affirms its fidelity to Catholic Church teaching on human sexuality” and affirms “the teachings of the Church on the commandment and vocation of love, the virtue of chastity and its expression in friendship, the importance of self-mastery, and the call to holiness.”

The foundations section of the plan cites the need to pursue “human solidarity and the common good” and says that “all must learn to govern their passions in disciplined ways on the road to lasting freedom.”

Bishop Rhoades reflected that the plan “affirms Catholic teaching that men and women who have homosexual tendencies 'must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity.'”

From "Notre Dame introduces gay-straight allies group" by Cardinal Newman Society 12/7/12

“I think if people look carefully at what we’re doing and really, in a thoughtful way, evaluate it, I think thoughtful people will see that this makes sense,” reportedly said Fr. Jenkins. “It makes sense for a Catholic university like Notre Dame to provide such structures to serve their students effectively.”

. . . although the plan describes the student organization as acting consistent with Catholic teaching, Fr. Jenkins seemed to indicate some doubt about how closely it will be regulated . . .

Moreover, at least one Vatican official has expressed reservations about a Catholic college organizing any student activity centered on homosexuality. In 1992 Cardinal Pio Laghi, then-Prefect of the Congregation for Catholic Education, opposed a homosexual club at Seattle University: “At a Catholic university, support can be given only to Catholic teaching on homosexuality and Catholic pastoral practice to help homosexual persons morally, ascetically, and spiritually…The university’s responsibilities towards homosexual persons, doctrinally and pastorally, should find their expression in courses in Catholic theology.”

From "Catholic Notre Dame announces services for gay students" by Moni Basu, CNN 12/7/12

[Lesbian student Mia] Lillis said the actions were huge for a school that has not been welcoming to gay students and has often found itself atop national lists of gay-unfriendly schools. Too bad, she said, because she found the students to be accepting of her. But they had not been afforded the channels to vocalize their thoughts. The climate was one of silence on gay issues.

[Student] Alex Coccia, who helped spearhead the student effort to change things at Notre Dame, said a new environment will be especially a big deal for questioning students.

[However,] The Sycamore Trust, which says its goal is to protect the Catholic identity of Notre Dame, expressed concern on its website, saying the university's support of a gay club "would give grave scandal damaging to the church, to the university, to students, and to other Catholic institutions and would establish a potential source of serious mischief within the school."

It went on to say, "Surely it is predictable that a group whose organizing principle is same-sex attraction is likely to be a forum, overt or covert, for opposition to the Church’s teachings about homosexuality. It may also become an instrumentality in the student 'hookup' culture."

From "Majority of Catholic colleges host pro-homosexual groups: survey" by Johanna Dasteel, LifeSiteNews.com 11/20/12

A survey by TFP Student Action has found pro-homosexual student clubs at 111 out of the 211 schools listed by the most comprehensive reference material available, “Ganley’s Catholic Schools in America,” published by Fisher Publishing Company.  TFP’s comprehensive list with corresponding clubs includes links to school websites and club descriptions.

TFP claims that many of the mentioned clubs act as platforms of Catholic dissent, advancing the idea of same-sex “marriage”, the acceptance of homosexual lifestyles, gender confusion, and the rejection of Catholic teaching.

In a press release announcing their survey, TFP Student Action quoted from a 2008 address of Pope Benedict XVI to Catholic educators at the Catholic University of America.

“Teachers and administrators, whether in universities or schools, have the duty and privilege to ensure that students receive instruction in Catholic doctrine and practice,” said the pope. “This requires that public witness to the way of Christ, as found in the Gospel and upheld by the Church’s Magisterium, shapes all aspects of an institution’s life, both inside and outside the classroom. Divergence from this vision weakens Catholic identity and, far from advancing freedom, inevitably leads to confusion, whether moral, intellectual or spiritual.”

Schools, Abortionists Sexualize Kids for Valentines

As Planned Parenthood kicked off the annual celebration of "National Condom Week" for Valentines Day, a California school conducted a "LoveFest" where children were encouraged to marry their same-sex best friend for extra credit and were graded on how well they could put on a condom by teachers wearing T-shirts saying "Gay? Fine by me."

-- From "Galileo High School Students Engage In Mock Weddings" by Bay City News 2/14/12

Susan Kitchell, the school nurse at Galileo High [in San Francisco], said the event, called "LoveFest," aimed to educate students about sexual health and healthy relationships.

The lunchtime event, sponsored by the school's gay-straight alliance and the San Francisco Wellness Initiative, gave students the opportunity to "marry" anyone they chose in a mock wedding.

The students also played educational games and learned about issues such as sexually transmitted disease prevention and safe sex practices, said Jacqueline Peters, a sponsor of the gay-straight alliance at Galileo High School.

They then learned how to correctly put on a condom using goggles that gave them a drunken view of things, and played a variety of games that promoted safer sex.

At one table, health teacher Raina Meyers put goggles on students that made their vision slightly blurry, simulating a drunken state. She then told them to put a condom on a wooden penis.

"You're pregnant!" Meyers told one girl who failed the drunk-goggle test, and to a boy, "You have gonorrhea."

A handful of students milled about at the safer sex exhibits, but the biggest draw was the wedding table, where students fidgeted as they waited for their nuptials.

"Celebrating the condom!" says Planned Parenthood affiliate. "This front-line warrior in the battle for your sexual health often gets a 'bad wrap.' Of all the tools in our sexual health toolkits, what else puts itself out there literally as a physical barrier between you and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), AND between you and unintended pregnancy?"

Deeper into the posting, however, the Planned Parenthood site warns that people sometimes still get venereal diseases when using condoms.

"When it comes to STDs, condoms prevent skin-to-skin contact, helping prevent against the spread of STDs. But it is still possible to spread STDs that are occurring outside the protected area," said the Planned Parenthood site.

As Planned Parenthood kicks off National Condom Week tomorrow, it will also be actively engaged in selling sex to children as young as those in grade school with graphic videos and books.

The American Life League has compiled a video exposing some of Planned Parenthood’s disturbing materials that are presented to school-age children across the country.

In one section the video, “Hooking Kids on Sex,” talks about a book for 10-year-olds with graphic images about how to masturbate, put on a condom and have sexual intercourse.

“If a dirty old man showed this book to kids in a park, he’d be arrested,” said Sedlak. “Why does Planned Parenthood, a taxpayer-funded organization, get to distribute these books to our children and get more government money?’

This is the story of the rainbow-bedecked Indiana Youth Group specialty plate, which was approved by the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles this week after four years of legal drama.

The official hang-up?

The BMV worried that IYG, a nonprofit that provides social services for gay youths, didn't have enough of a statewide impact. The BMV also was worried that IYG might spend revenue from sales of the plate to pay its employees -- a no-no. However, a lawsuit filed with the American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana pointed to a lack of transparency in the BMV requirements. With the lawsuit settled, IYG's application and those from nine other organizations were approved.

Getting a plate was about marketing and getting money to fund its mission. IYG gets $25 for each $40 plate it sells.

Praise Lesbian Homecoming King, or You're a Bigot

When lesbian Rebeca Arellano was crowned homecoming king at Patrick Henry High School in San Diego, she joined the queen Haileigh Adams, her lesbian counterpart. The school superintendent has since characterized every expressed disagreement with this glorification of sexual deviancy, regardless how civil, as hate-filled.
"For all the girls who think tradition should be continued, go back to the kitchen, stop having sex before you're married, get out of school and job system, don't have an opinion, don't own any property, give up the right to marry who you love, don't vote, and allow your husband to do whatever he pleases to you. Think about the meaning of tradition when you use it in your argument against us."

Students at a San Diego high school elected a lesbian couple as homecoming king and queen over the weekend, a move that has garnered international attention for the couple.

The couple said they were not planning to run and were shocked by the attention they've received.

The couple said they had received a lot of positive support, but that a lot of people were also angry about it, saying that it's wrong for a girl to be king.

Arellano said one of her teachers told her, "Today school is a bit better because of you girls."

"We have a lot of support, but there are also a lot of people who are angry about it," she said. "Anonymous Patrick Henry students are saying they're embarrassed and that it's wrong for a girl to take the spot of king. But there's no other way for us to run as a couple. It's not really fair for us not to have the right to run as a couple."

Adams and Arellano both came out their freshman year of high school, and they began dating in February of their sophomore year. They say their parents were supportive both when they came out and when they started dating.

From "Mockery of Tradition? Lesbian High School Couple Named Homecoming King and Queen" by Allison Summers, Christian Post Contributor 10/31/11

"What a disgrace," wrote one user. "Unbelievable how sexually confused our children are becoming due to the social pressures stating that it is 'normal'."

Another commenter wrote, "Okay, this isn't fair by any means because the definition of a king explicitly states it's 'a male sovereign or monarch; a man who holds by life tenure, and usually by hereditary right, the chief authority over a country and people.' This individual here is a female thus she ought to be considered as a queen which is 'a female sovereign or monarch.' All these manipulations in these high school homecomings are beginning to become a joke every year."

However, Arellano shot back at the naysayers with a Facebook post asking them to reconsider what the word 'tradition' means before wishing society would revert back to it.

ACLU Threatens Tenn. School over Gay Club

A Monroe County, TN high school student and his sister have accused the principal of physical assault relating to the pair's advocacy to form a homosexualist club, but without any corroborating witnesses, the school is investigating and plans to resolve the situation then announce the outcome. Meanwhile, the homosexualists have declared the school administration to be homophobic bigoted bullies.

The Tennessee chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union has entered the case on behalf of 17-year-old Chris Sigler and other Sequoyah High School students it says have been prevented by school officials from forming the alliance they call GSA [Gay-Straight Alliance]. It threatened a lawsuit unless the school agrees by Tuesday to respect the rights of students to peacefully state opinions.

Sigler and his family filed a police report over the Sept. 30 classroom confrontation with Principal Maurice Moser.

Sigler said Moser confronted him because it was the second time he wore a homemade shirt to school that said "GSA: We've got your back."

Monroe County Schools issued a statement: "Our documentation clearly indicates that there are always two sides to every story. We'll gladly provide more information as it becomes available."

Chuck Cagle, one of the lawyers for Monroe County Schools, said there are "vast, vast differences" in what the family alleges occurred and what school officials say happened.

"They indicate what has been stated is not what happened. Most of what we've been able to ascertain, there's certainly another side of this incident," Cagle said.

In an Oct. 4 letter to Mike Lowry, Monroe County's director of schools, the ACLU indicated it will file a lawsuit if not given a satisfactory response by Oct. 11.

Countering ACLU Bullying for School Sexualization

A campaign has been launched to halt an effort by the ACLU to pressure schools to open their Internet filtering options for children to allow sites such as polybi.com, where a woman's naked torso is fondled by three hands; gaydatingtips.com, which advertises a see-through boxer for men; and gayquestions.com/hc3.asp, where students would see an image of two naked men apparently engaged in a sex act.

-- From "Alliance Defense Fund to Gwinnett schools: Don't be bullied by ACLU's 'radical sexual agenda'" by Dyana Bagby, Georgia Voice 8/1/11

“School districts shouldn’t be bullied into exposing students to sexually explicit materials,” said ADF Senior Counsel David Cortman in a statement. “This latest scare tactic — under the façade of illegal censorship — is just another act of intimidation designed to forward the ACLU’s radical sexual agenda for children.”

On May 23, the ACLU threatened the Gwinnett School System with legal action if it did not remove the filter because it prohibited lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students from access to such websites that could be helpful, including how to start a gay-straight alliance or how to deal with bullying.

“Allowing students equal access to LGBT-related websites is not just a legal duty; it also makes sense from a safety perspective, particularly in light of the epidemic of LGBT youth suicides and bullying,” states the ACLU of Georgia letter.

From "Campaign fights ACLU demand to let kids have porn" by Bob Unruh, World Net Daily 8/1/11

The ACLU had told Gwinnett officials they had no legitimate interest in blocking the porn images and that its Blue Coat filtering "engages in unconstitutional viewpoint discrimination by blocking sites that express acceptance and tolerances toward LGBT individuals but not blocking sites that urge LGBT persons to change their sexual orientation."

The ACLU has launched a similar campaign in many other states in which it cites several filtering companies -- including Blue Coat, M86, Fortiguard, Websense and URL Blacklist -- for preventing students from having access to such explicit material.

"The district is well within its legal rights to keep the filter in place, especially since deactivating the filter would expose students to sites with sexually explicit content," the ADF said.

The ACLU's argument that the filters violate the First Amendment lacks merit because the district has "broad authority" over what materials students may access, the ADF said.
