North Carolina legislators, along with Governor Pat McCrory, intend to overrule the Gay/Transgender Agenda ordinance that passed this week 7-to-4 in the Charlotte City Council, which takes effect on April Fool's Day.

The Charlotte City Council expanded the city's nondiscrimination ordinance late on Monday to add protections for marital and familial status, sexual orientation, gender expression and gender identity.

State House of Representatives Speaker Tim Moore, a Republican, said he would consider legislation to block the measure, which some critics fear would allow sexual predators to gain access to women's bathrooms.

Charlotte was one of the largest U.S. cities without a law explicitly protecting the LGBT community from discrimination, according to the Human Rights Campaign, a civil rights group based in Washington. The revised law takes effect on April 1.

[Gov.] McCrory, a former mayor of Charlotte, said changing restroom rules could "create major public safety issues."

About 140 members of the public got one minute each to offer their opinions to the Charlotte City Council before Monday's vote. The council chambers were filled to capacity, and some speakers had to await their time outside.

Several hundred people stood outside in a wind-driven rain to protest, holding signs saying "No Men In Women's Restrooms" and "Keep Kids Safe."

Chris Williams, a 30-year-old father of three, passed out "No" stickers to the crowd, saying most Charlotte residents "stand with religious values."

Conservative activists have called on lawmakers to pass legislation to protect what they say are the religious rights . . .

When the ordinance goes into effect, a baker would no longer be able to refuse to bake a cake for a gay wedding. Other vendors would have to cater LGBT events, even if it is against their religious beliefs.

The city couldn’t revoke a business license if someone violated the ordinance. But it could seek an injunction that would force a business to comply.

If only the bathroom provision were removed, the other protections would stay, including those for transgender individuals.

A year ago, council members voted to remove the bathroom provision from the ordinance. But two council members, John Autry and LaWana Mayfield, voted against that version of the ordinance out of principle. They said they wouldn’t leave some members of the LGBT community behind.

As LGBT activists around the U.S. turn their attention toward expanding rights for transgender Americans, they have met growing opposition from lawmakers in conservative states who have repeatedly focused on bathrooms.

Forty-four bills that limit bathroom and locker room use or allow business owners to deny service to transgender people are currently under consideration in 16 states, according to a report released Monday by the Human Rights Campaign, a national LGBT advocacy group.

The City Council first deliberated over a package of LGBT protections in March 2015 . . . But in the next local election, last November, the Human Rights Campaign and other advocacy groups got involved and helped elect two new council members who supported protections for transgender people.

"I think it's just inappropriate," Republican Sen. David Curtis, who represents a district outside Charlotte, told the Lincoln Times-News. "We have rules in our society and that's just one of the rules in our society. This liberal group is trying to redefine everything about our society. Gender and marriage — just the whole liberal agenda."

"Shame on Charlotte Mayor Jennifer Roberts and the city council members" for passing the ordinance, [Billy Graham Evangelistic Association president Franklin] Graham wrote Tuesday, after the vote on the measure, which also says businesses can't discriminate against gay, lesbian or transgender customers and applies to places of public accommodation, such as bars, restaurants, stores as well as taxis.

If the ordinance were put to a vote in Charlotte, "I'm sure it would be overwhelmingly defeated by Democrats and Republicans alike," Graham wrote, praising council members Ed Driggs, Claire Fallon, Greg Phipps and Kenny Smith who voted "No."

"Are people just not thinking clearly? This law would allow pedophiles, perverts, and predators into women's bathrooms. This is wicked and it's filthy. To think that my granddaughters could go into a restroom and a man be in there exposing himself … what are we setting our children and grandchildren up for? There's not a public restroom in Charlotte that would be safe!"

Graham added that Charlotte's mayor and the supporting City Council members have perhaps "succumbed to the pressures from depraved sexual activists and are willing to put women and girls at risk like this."

Homosexualists Battle Against 'Transgender Rights'

With the rise in power of the Gay Agenda, including control of the White House, has come an internal battle for power within the ranks of the sexual revolutionaries.  For example, lesbians who want to go to the bathroom without being confronted by men pretending to be women are crying foul, while many homosexual activists proclaim that it's simply wrong to convince kindergartners they're the opposite gender.

In many ways, this has been an encouragingly fast-moving year in terms of recognition for the transgender community, from Caitlyn Jenner to the recent decision by Governor Cuomo to extend legal protections statewide in New York. But the community is facing backlash, too, from feminists like Germaine Greer's not-"real women" commentary to Houston voters, who struck down a 2014 LGBT anti-discrimination law . . . And now a small number of gay people want to end common cause with them, too, putting up a Change.org petition demanding that several important LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) rights organizations remove the T from their missions.

Why undo such a long-standing coalition? "We feel their ideology is not only completely different from that promoted by the LGB community (LGB is about sexual orientation, trans is about gender identity)," reads the anonymous petition, "but is ultimately regressive and actually hostile to the goals of women and gay men."

The 65-year-old former Olympian stopped to address one protester, who over the loudspeaker could be heard saying, "You are an insult to trans people, you are an insult to women."

Caitlyn spoke to a group of 1,000 people at the 7th annual Speaker Series luncheon for the Chicago House, which provides social services for those impacted by HIV/AIDS and other LGBT issues.

We have made great progress over the past decade decoupling gender identity from genitalia. On the one hand, it's easy, because gender identity is a brain function and genitalia are just genitals. On the other hand, trying to teach a society that has been raised for generations (millennia, actually) to believe that sex is nothing more than genitals, is extremely difficult. Because we have been successful, we have put ourselves in the unenviable but unavoidable position of dealing with bathroom panic attacks that stem from fears of male genitals.

Not that long ago trans women were assumed to have undergone genital reconstruction. No more penis, therefore, no threat that the male weapon would be used for predation, a fear that underlies transphobia. Not that there weren't many trans women who could not afford bottom surgery, or for whom it was medically contraindicated, or who just didn't care, but the cisgender [normal] population viewed trans women as postoperative trans women. As the decoupling began, initially targeted to include trans men rather than non-operative trans women, it became obvious to more non-trans persons, as an unintended consequence, that some trans women still had their penises, and that propelled the bathroom panic forward.

Politically speaking and being hard-nosed and practical, I will say that trans persons have no right to demand that language be changed to include them while alienating the vast majority in the process. . . .

Gay/bisexual men and women just ARE — we don’t need medicine or surgery to help us become who we believe we are, which is the case with the trans community.

To take it further, the first is about sexual and affectional orientation, who we are sexually attracted to and who we choose to share our love with; the latter is about gender identity, and altering one’s body to fit what one’s mind believes it should resemble. They are two very, very different ideas, and the problem that develops when we are all under the same umbrella is that so many of our enemies see us as one and the same….

To me, the LGB movement, with its celebration of all types of gay men and women, such as bears, leather daddies, drag queens, diesel dykes, lipstick lesbians, etc., has always been about expanding and re-defining concepts of gender; the trans movement, on the other hand, appears to be about re-asserting and codifying traditional concepts of gender.

Over the past few years, as we’ve seen such rapid, astonishing progress towards LGBT equality . . . Lately I’ve been struggling to understand why gay men feel so entitled to tell others how to behave, when so many people are of the opinion that we are societal deviants, no matter how well-behaved we are. Why are so many of us adopting the very same kind of oppressive language that has been wielded against us by antigay extremists?

It’s surprising how many gay men consider themselves arbiters of social norms and mores, as same-sex marriage has only held majority support in this country for a few years now. And that majority is still very slim . . . It is a particularly galling feat of hypocrisy for gay men, who have been on the outskirts of acceptable society for such a long time, to turn around and assert their role as gatekeepers so soon after achieving “respectability.”

There’s an audible “I got mine” mentality in [the “Drop the T” movement] that repulses me. Yes, I’ve seen exclusionary language from trans activists as well, and comments that seem homophobic or misogynistic, but it’s all symptomatic of the same problem.

Why should your opinion of what is the “correct” way to express gender, gender identity, sexuality, or religion become a mandate for others? . . .

Yes, the pendulum sometimes swings too far in the other direction; liberals can be bigots too. . . . I believe we can be sensitive and understanding of the experience of others without pushing political correctness so far that it becomes tyrannical and obscene. There is an obvious middle road we can take here.

. . . we need to be careful not to turn our passion and vehemence against one another; together we will all rise up, but divided we will all fall right back down to where we started.

A lesbian "married couple" plan to file a civil rights lawsuit against a Christian school in San Diego, California for not enrolling their 5-year-old daughter based on the following from the school's handbook:

“Mt. Erie Christian Academy [MECA] is a religious, Bible-believing institution providing education in a distinct Christian environment, and it believes that its biblical role is to work in conjunction with the home to mold students to be Christ like. On those occasions in which the atmosphere or conduct within a particular home is counter to or in opposition to the biblical lifestyle that the school teaches, the school reserves the right, within its sole discretion, to refuse admission of an applicant or to discontinue enrollment of a student. This includes, but is not necessarily limited to, living in, condoning or supporting sexual immorality; practicing homosexual lifestyle or alternative gender identity; promoting such practices; or otherwise having the inability to support the moral principles of the school (Leviticus 20:13a; Romans 1:21-27; Matthew 19:4-6; I Corinthians 6:9-20).”

Mt. Erie Christian Academy in San Diego is not allowing the child to attend [kindergarten] because her parents are lesbians, one of her mothers says.

According to 10News.com, the student attended both preschool and summer school at the institution.

Sheena, a stay-at-home mom who asked 10News.com not to use her last name, said the parents were summoned to the school the Friday before Labor Day. Her wife, Lashaune, is in the navy and is now away on deployment.

While school administrators have not commented about the case to the media, ABC 10 cited a woman identified as "Kailyn" who described herself as the director of Mt. Erie, who told them that although the school has a non-discrimination policy in place, that the "Bible says homosexuality is a sin," and that "we don't condone any sinful lifestyles."

"The least Christian thing I could think of is turning away a child," Rev. MacArthur Flournoy of the Religion and Faith Program at the Human Rights Campaign said in a statement on HRC's website. "The message this school is sending to this child is that God is not there for her nor for her parents. There's absolutely nothing Godly in their actions."

Added Johanna Eager, Director of HRC Foundation’s Welcoming Schools program: “There is no doubt substantial harm is done to schools, children, teachers and families when a school tells a student that something is wrong with them or their family.”

From "Girl barred from San Diego school due to lesbian parents" by Allison Ash, KGTV-TV10 (San Diego, CA) 9/29/15

San Diego attorney Eugene Iredale said . . . both California and federal cases have upheld the right of private institutions to bar membership based on religious beliefs.  That is exactly the opposite of discrimination laws that pertain to publicly-funded programs and businesses that cater to the general public.

Iredale said he believes that in the next five to 10 years, the U.S. Supreme Court will have to decide a case like the one involving Mt. Erie because of changing public policy regarding homosexuality.

Sheena said she's ready to fight for it.

Team 10 reached out to the National Center for Lesbian Rights.

"This type of policy is out of touch with reality," said Cathy Sakimura, deputy director and family law director for the NCLR.

Sakimura said barring Sheena's daughter from school could create a culture of fear among children at the school, allowing children to think it’s not OK to be LGBT or divorced. She hopes the Mt. Erie situation will start an important conversation within the church community, one that leans toward better acceptance. She said many parents within the church and school community may be ready to change the policies to better reflect that.

From "Faith-based schools face LGBT dilemmas" by Wayne Stender, WORLD News Service 10/5/15

In the months since the Supreme Court decided same-sex marriage should be legal throughout the United States, faith-based high schools have entered a new frontier. While some Christian schools are fighting to teach biblical views on sexuality, others have changed to fit in.

Solicitor General Donald Verrilli made comments before the Supreme Court foreshadowing legal problems for faith-based schools. When asked by Justice Samuel Alito if a faith-based school could lose its tax-exempt status over its views on same-sex marriage, Verrilli replied, "It's certainly going to be an issue. I don't deny that."

Joe Carter, editor for The Gospel Coalition, wrote last spring that the Supreme Court's decision on same-sex marriage could force some schools to either adjust views on sexuality or give-up non-profit status, making them for-profit schools. That could mean faith-based schools won't be in existence much longer.

I don't think so, and one could argue that psychologically... this is as devastating to the little 5-year-old girl as some of those other vicious practices."

So, this news organization reaches out to an attorney who likens Christian practices to human sacrifice and amputation. Wow. Oh, and their other source? It's the deputy director and family law director for the National Center for Lesbian Rights, who said, "This type of policy is out of touch with reality."

Codify More 'Gay Rights:' Hillary, Biden Promise

Democrats Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden competed Saturday for endorsements in speeches before the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), America's largest homosexual activist group, whose co-founder was arrested for anal sex with a boy.  If elected president, Hillary promised to change the Civil Rights Act of 1964 via a Federal Equality Act to provide even more "gay rights."  Biden said that the military must eliminate restrictions that limit full inclusion of mentally ill sexual deviants.

The vice president spoke to 3,500 LGBT activists and leaders in a cavernous subterranean ballroom at the Washington Convention Center for the annual Human Rights Campaign dinner, a speaking gig Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton turned down in order to appear on “Saturday Night Live,” The New York Times reported.

Biden is close to deciding on a 2016 presidential bid against Clinton, and the LGBT community is an important constituency for any Democrat eyeing the White House. He contrasted with the former secretary of state at one point on Saturday, telling gay rights activists that equality would come easily now — even though just hours before Clinton had warned the same group that further change would be difficult.

Though Clinton gave up the keynote spot to the vice president, she addressed the group’s breakfast meeting early Saturday instead, giving the first speech of her 2016 campaign exclusively focused on LGBT rights. She thanked the Human Rights Campaign for helping “change a lot of minds, including mine” on marriage equality.

On policy, Clinton and Biden lined up almost perfectly. They both called for a new focus on transgender rights and working to expand LGBT rights abroad. They identified the same three specific domestic policy goals: A federal equality act that would extend civil rights protections to LGBT Americans, allowing trans people serve in the military, and upgrading to “honorable discharge” the status of service members who were kicked out of the military under Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.

Biden's declaration at the Human Rights Campaign's annual dinner Saturday [at the Walter E. Although the White House says Obama supports a Pentagon review aimed at ending the transgender ban, neither Obama nor the military has said definitively that the policy will be changed.

"No longer is there any question transgender people are able to serve in the United States military," Biden told a crowd of 3,000 gay rights activists at the group's star-studded gala.

Biden, who is considering running for president, declared transgender rights to be "the civil rights issue of our time" as he delivered the keynote speech, just hours after Hillary Rodham Clinton — his top rival if he enters the race — gave a rousing address elevating LGBT rights as a main pillar of 2016 bid. Biden said gays and lesbians shouldn't fear "those shrill voices" trying to undo gay marriage and other advances because Americans "have moved so far beyond them and their appeals to prejudice and fear and homophobia."

As recently as this year, Clinton said that while she personally supported gay marriage, the issue was best left for states to decide —a position held by most of the Republican presidential field.

Since then, Clinton has placed equal rights at the forefront of her campaign, in part a reflection of the growing political and financial strength of the gay community in Democratic politics.

Republicans running for president would enact policies that will discriminate against and hurt gays and lesbians and their families, she said. Progress on equal rights "can be undone," Clinton told the annual gala of the Human Rights Campaign, the largest activist group working for gay rights.

Clinton also pledged to press a new generation of laws to protect the gay and lesbian community, including penalties on child welfare agencies that discriminate against them, nondiscrimination protections in the military for transgender individuals and laws to help prevent violence against transgender people, many of whom are female minorities.

The Boy Scouts of America on Monday ended its nationwide ban on openly gay adult leaders. But despite a compromise allowing conservative church-sponsored units to pick their own volunteer leaders, the Mormon church, the country’s largest sponsor of Scout units, said it might leave the organization.

To avoid the wholesale defection of conservative religious groups, the Boy Scouts said church-based local units would remain free to exclude gay adults from voluntary leadership roles like scoutmasters and Cub Scout den and pack leaders.

Mormons use the Boy Scouts as their main nonreligious activity for boys, and the Cub Scout and Boy Scout units they sponsor accounted for 17 percent of all youths in Scouting in 2013, the last year for which data have been published.

Under the Boy Scout policy adopted Monday, discrimination based on sexual orientation will also be barred in all Boy Scout offices and for all paid jobs — a step that could head off looming lawsuits in New York, Colorado and other states that prohibit such discrimination in employment.

Trail Life issued its own eight-page legal memo, written by a former BSA lawyer who is now Trail Life’s general counsel.

“The church-chartered troop will likely be sued the moment it tries to revoke the membership of the homosexual member who wears his uniform to the Gay Pride Parade, revokes or denies membership to an adult who publicly gets married to someone of the same sex, or denies membership to the girl who believes she is actually a male,” the Trail Life memo reads.

“You’ve got a highly divided organization,” says Richard Ellis, a political science professor at Willamette University in Salem, Ore., and the author of “Judging the Boy Scouts of America.” “Now it’s not clear that even this solution, which is an attempt to get the [gay rights] issue out of the way, can do it, because nobody is happy with it.”

. . . Some 70 percent of Boy Scout troops are now run by faith-based groups. By the time the BSA considered changing its ban on gay Scout leaders in 2013, it polled its membership and got incredible pushback, Ellis says. Nearly all the councils in the Northeast wanted the anti-gay policy changed, while 80 percent of the Southern councils wanted it to stay the same. The organization worried about an exodus of members. In the end, it decided to go with lifting the ban on gay youths, but not gay adults.

A BSA decision to lift the ban on gay adults but still leave hiring decisions to the discretion of local religious-based organizations affiliated with troops might have seemed progressive if the Scouts had taken that stance 25 years ago, when many first urged it. But coming in 2015, it now seems to critics like too little, too late – a decision that will still allow for discrimination on religious grounds.

“Our position has been and remains clear – we continue to urge the Boy Scouts of America to embrace full LGBT inclusion, without exception,” says Liz Halloran, a spokeswoman for the Human Rights Campaign, which fights for gay rights, via an e-mail.

"The church has always welcomed all boys to its Scouting units regardless of sexual orientation," church spokesman Eric Hawkins said in a prepared statement. "However, the admission of openly gay leaders is inconsistent with the doctrines of the church and what have traditionally been the values of the Boy Scouts of America.”

Hawkins also confirmed the church is considering the possibility of creating an international program similar to Scouting and also made for young men ages 12 to 18.

"As a global organization with members in 170 countries, the church has long been evaluating the limitations that fully one-half of its youth face where Scouting is not available," he said. "Those worldwide needs combined with this vote by the BSA National Executive Board will be carefully reviewed by the leaders of the church in the weeks ahead."

The Catholic Church, another large charter organization with the Boy Scouts, did not offer a formal response to the vote Monday.

Voters in Missouri’s third largest city of Springfield voted Tuesday to repeal an ordinance that provided protection against discrimination in housing and hiring based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Unofficial final results showed that repeal of the ordinance passed with 51.4 percent of the vote.

Opponents of the nondiscrimination ordinance have said it violates their freedoms by preventing them from operating a business according to their religious beliefs. Others have said that sexual predators would be allowed to use women’s restrooms and have questioned whether discrimination against gay and lesbian residents actually occurs.

The campaign insisted it was not likening transgender people to sexual predators, arguing that "sexual predators, usually heterosexual, can and will use this ordinance to pretend to be transgender in order to access women's locker rooms, dressing rooms, bathrooms, women's shelters, and other private areas."

The ACLU of Missouri said it would continue to advocate for a state law protecting the LGBT community. Marty Rouse, national field director for the Human Rights Campaign, called Tuesday’s vote "disappointing."

Thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours were poured into both sides of this campaign — which was always passionate and sometimes ugly.

Mayor Bob Stephens, who was re-elected Tuesday, did not give his view of the issue during the campaign, but said he thought it should be decided on the federal level.

The campaign pitted national gay rights groups against leaders of many of this city’s large churches. Human Rights Campaign, based in Washington, spent more than $27,260 on the “One Springfield” effort against the repeal measure. Its financial support was assisted by a $10,000 check from the Gill Action Fund to finance advertisements and organizational efforts.

But the outside money defending the ordinance motivated local and, to an extent, national efforts to support repeal. More than $37,600 was contributed late in the push by the National Black Robe Regiment, a group that describes itself as a network that helps pastors “to engage in their biblical and historical role to stand boldly for righteousness and transform society through spiritual and cultural engagement.”

“The issue was pretty simple: We had a poorly written law that exposed people to litigation that could be frivolous, No. 1,” Mr. Morrow said. “Based on a lot of other results, this type of legislation is being used to target Christians.”

Before Tuesday night, Springfield was one of 15 Missouri cities — including St. Louis, Kansas City and Columbia, a college town — that had such ordinances.

That statewide effort is key. The act would basically give all of Missouri the same protections that were voted down in Springfield on Tuesday.

A state Senate committee voted to move along the Missouri Nondiscrimination Act on Wednesday, and the House Criminal Proceedings Committee is expected to hear the bill next week.

Roughly six dozen briefs backing pro-gay rights plaintiffs in the four states are expected by the Friday deadline. Included is a ''people's brief'' filed by the Human Rights Campaign with the signatures of 207,551 people.

Mayors of 226 U.S. cities also are expressing their support for same-sex marriage. Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley says he is not sure how his constituents feel about the issue, but said it wouldn't affect his view either way. "I don't think constitutional rights are subject to public opinion," Cranley said.

With 2 ½ hours of oral arguments set for April 28, the Supreme Court could issue a ruling later this year that could overturn the bans or leave them in place, which would upset a patchwork of laws and court decisions that currently allow same-sex couples to marry in 37 states and the District of Columbia.

While many of the briefs came from groups who have long fought to have the bans reversed, support also came from more unexpected sources: More than 300 Republican, conservative and center-right activists and government officials signed a brief in support of overturning the bans. Another brief was signed by hundreds of U.S. companies, including Johnson & Johnson, Apple, Microsoft and more.

They ranged from the American Bar Association — which included a table of the many legal protections afforded legally married couples and their children that are denied same-sex couples and their families — to universities, organizations representing gay service members, Ohio's Cuyahoga County, the Commonwealth of Virginia and more.

"Inconsistent state marriage laws impose an added economic burden on American businesses at an estimated cost of over one billion dollars per year," said the brief filed by 379 signers, which included insurance companies, manufacturing giants, financial institutions and sports franchises, the New England Patriots, San Francisco Giants and Tampa Bay Rays among them.

"Employers are better served by a uniform marriage rule that gives equal dignity to employee relationships. Allowing same-sex couples to marry improves employee morale and productivity," they wrote. "Diversity and inclusion strengthen, not weaken, our businesses."

Sen. Susan Collins, Sen. Mark Kirk and Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker are among 300 Republicans who signed onto a friend of the court brief at the Supreme Court in support of gay marriage.

The Republican signatories include billionaire David Koch, former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, former Utah governor Jon Huntsman, retired Gen. Stanley McChrystal, top aides in Mitt Romney’s 2012 campaign, and a host of current and former members of Congress. Baker, elected in November, was the only sitting GOP governor to sign the brief.

“One of the points that I hope people appreciate when they read the brief is that supporting marriage equality is, in fact, the conservative position,” [former Republican National Committee chairman, now openly homosexual, Ken] Mehlman told The Boston Globe in an interview.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie both dropped opposition to same-sex unions in their state after court rulings forced their hand, but they remain personally opposed. After marriages began in his state in January, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush called for respect from all sides. “I hope that we can show respect for the good people on all sides of the gay and lesbian marriage issue — including couples making lifetime commitments to each other who are seeking greater legal protections and those of us who believe marriage is a sacrament and want to safeguard religious liberty,” he said.

Christian groups say the people and their elected representatives, and not unelected judges, should decide if states should legally recognize gay marriage, which is legal in 36 states and the District of Columbia.

Central to the case are two questions, whether states are required to license marriages between same-sex couples under the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, which the Michigan case has to decide; and whether the amendment requires states to recognize such marriages when licensed by other states – which the Ohio and Tennessee cases have to decide. The Kentucky case includes both.

Russell Moore, president of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission . . . [said] this case could potentially transform the cultural landscape of America.

"We should pray for the Court, that they will not seek to redefine marriage," he said. "Marriage was not created by government action, and shouldn't be re-created by government action. Even more than that, we should pray for churches who will know how to articulate and embody a Christian vision of marriage as the one flesh union of a man and a woman in the tumultuous years to come."

After contentious lengthy debate with massive citizen attendance and participation, the Charlotte, North Carolina City Council, by a 6-5 vote, rejected a proposed new ordinance for protections of homosexuals, transgenders, etc. (to make them a special class above other citizens).  In 2012, former City Manager Curt Walton unilaterally created special privileges for LGBT employees, but that policy does NOT apply to the general public.

In an often-heated meeting that stretched until nearly midnight and included more than 100 speakers, Charlotte City Council narrowly rejected an amended ordinance that would have provided protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals in public spaces.

A deeply divided crowd filled the meeting chambers as well as an overflow room as speaker after speaker took a turn at the microphone, each making an impassioned plea for the council to vote a particular way. And that's after hundreds had rallied for hours before the meeting started Monday evening and thousands had sent emails to the council members.

The original proposal would have updated the city's existing nondiscrimination ordinance for commercial and transportation-for-hire enterprises and public accommodations, adding five new protected characteristics — marital status, familial status, sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression. In addition, transgender individuals would be allowed to choose which restroom, locker room or shower to use in public places.

Before the final vote, council members had removed the section of the ordinance that would have allowed transgender people to use the bathroom of the gender they identify with. That issue drew the most vigorous opposition from dozens of speakers.

But even with the bathroom portion removed, council remained divided. Several council members had said they were opposed to removing that part, which would also have applied to locker rooms and showers, because it weakened the ordinance.

Mayfield and Autry, also a Democrat, voted against removing the bathroom section, and both voted against the final bill because they couldn’t support a half measure.

The final vote against the bill brought together both supporters and opponents of the original measure. [Kenny] Smith, a Republican, said he believed the bill was motivated not by a desire to end discrimination but by a political agenda to “impose the progressive left’s new morality on our citizens.”

Council members Michael Barnes, Kenny Smith, LaWana Mayfield, Ed Driggs, John Autry and Greg Phipps voted against it. Voting in favor of the ordinance were David Howard, Claire Fallon, Vi Lyles, Patsy Kinsey and Al Austin, all Democrats.

On Sunday, [Nancy Kraft, pastor at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church] told congregants she just doesn't understand how anyone could oppose the measure. "It feels mean and hateful to me," and added, "what makes me crazier is seeing such injustice being perpetrated by people who claim to follow Jesus."

Last week, Reverend Mark Harris at First Baptist Church in Charlotte said the city council is "trying to make protected classes out of purely abnormal behavior."

Both Reverend Harris and Pastor Kraft have done more than just preach to their faithful. They are both activists on this issue. Both have joined dozens of other clergy members in signing letters to the city council either for or against the expansion of the non-discrimination ordinance.

. . . Tami Fitzgerald, executive director of the North Carolina Values Coalition, a group opposed to the measure [said,] "It leads to religious discrimination by the city because it automatically discriminates and excludes businesses that have religious beliefs."

Lisa Metzger, 38, a wife and mother of 11 who lives in Matthews, said she alerted a police officer Monday night that transgender women were using the women’s restroom during the City Council meeting.

She even videotaped some of them, which Metzger says she showed police to prompt officers to stop the activity.

It’s been a roller-coaster year across the state for gay rights advocates and opponents. In January, Greensboro became the first city in the state to pass a housing non-discrimination measure that includes protections for gays and transgendered people.

Chris Sgro is executive director of the gay and transgender advocacy group Equality NC, and a resident of Greensboro. He says even though the Charlotte measure failed to pass, he believes other cities across the state will continue to push for anti-discrimination policies.

“I still think the fact that we had that conversation with a majority of the Charlotte City Council and got them to a place where they want to provide these protections is going to provide pressure for other parts of the state – municipalities across the state – to consider protections for gay and trans folks.”

In an attempt to preempt Gay Agenda infiltration, the Rankin County, Mississippi school board has adopted a policy requiring parental consent for students to join any school club.  When asked about a parent providing such consent for a "gay club," the school's lawyer responded that clubs advancing sexual deviancy might be forbidden on the basis of educational standards and principles requiring abstinence-only sex ed.

The Human Rights Campaign (HRC), America's most-acclaimed homosexualist organization, is demanding "the board, reverse its decision to publicly humiliate, degrade and embarrass young LGBT people."

Newly appointed board member Ira Singleton questioned what would happen if parents did give consent for children to join such a club, to which [attorney Fred] Harrell responded at that point principals would decide whether the club violates existing policy.

School board member Debbie Tolleson questioned what the point of a gay club would be.

Although school board members and officials said they were not aware of any attempt to form a club in the district, Brandon High School theatre teacher Janice Weaver said she was approached by a student in December who expressed a desire to create a gay-straight alliance (GSA), or a student-led, student-organized club aimed at combating anti-gay discrimination and bullying in schools. Weaver said the student submitted the proposal for the club to school administrators.

Currently, students at several schools in the state, including Ridgeland High School in Madison County, have created such clubs or are working to form them.

Weaver, who agreed to be the sponsor for the club, emphasized she had no knowledge whether district officials and school board members were aware of the student's proposal.

. . . Brandon [Mississippi] parent Shannon Miller decided to express her opposition to the [board decision].

"They (students) already have Jesus and Java club and others, so they should be able to have a GSA," she said. "It would be a great education for those kids who have never been around a gay person on in their life. It would be a great education that Dr. Weathersby is really thwarting."

Rankin County School District spokeswoman Robin Haney issued a statement Thursday saying the district plans to stand by the policy and that it will "be applied equally to all clubs and students."

Miller said as of now, about 10 to 15 people have committed to Tuesday's protest.

. . . Senior Lucas Bonham, who identifies as transgender, said he wishes a gay-straight alliance had formed earlier at the school when he came out.

"There's been times I didn't have anyone, and my family was bad with it at first," he said. "But students need this because it's a struggle trying to discover who you are and to think you're completely abnormal."

Robin Haney, Rankin County School District spokeswoman, said the school system has been advised to make no comment until it has reviewed and responded to the [Gay Agenda] letter from the ACLU. The district has eight high schools and about 19,500 students total; Brandon High, about 12 miles east of Jackson, Miss., has almost 1,500 students.

"I was greatly disturbed when I heard what was said by the superintendent and his board attorney, because he should know better," American Civil Liberties Union Legal Director Charles Irvin told WAPT. "What I want to see changed is that you not try to hide behind abstinence only to say that is the rationale for keeping students from being able to assemble."

Mississippi is one of nine states with restrictive laws that maintain strict goals for teaching students about sexuality and essentially bar teachers from educating students about LGBT issues [for example: Tennessee].
