Democrat presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has, in exchange for the endorsement of Planned Parenthood, pledged to repeal the decades-old "Hyde Amendment" that restricts federal funding of abortion (except in cases of rape, incest and life endangerment) as “it’s just hard to justify” because “reproductive rights are a fundamental human right.”

Restrictions like Hyde have had devastating consequences for women. According to data from the Guttmacher Institute [which is associated with Planned Parenthood], one in four women are forced to carry an unwanted pregnancy to term because they can’t afford a medical intervention without insurance.

But last year, House Democrats introduced a bill—The EACH Woman Act—to challenge Hyde and require abortion coverage under all healthcare and insurance provided by the federal government. The measure would also prohibit states from placing restrictions on private health insurance companies looking to offer a full range of reproductive health services, including abortion.

Opposition to direct federal funding of elective abortion is so strong that Democrats didn't attempt to repeal the Hyde amendment when they held the White House and overwhelming majorities in the Congress from 2009 to 2011. A 2010 Quinnipiac poll found that American voters opposed public funding of abortion by a 40-point margin--67 percent to 27 percent.

Although a President Hillary Clinton would likely face tough opposition in Congress to repealing the Hyde amendment, it may only take one Supreme Court appointment to accomplish that goal. Restrictions on taxpayer funding of abortion were upheld by the Supreme Court by a 6-3 decision in 1980 and by a 5-4 decision in 1991.

In 2009, Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a Bill Clinton appointee, said she was "surprised" the Court upheld the Hyde amendment because she believed "concern about population growth and particularly growth in populations that we don't want to have too many of" would lead the Court to declare a constitutional right to taxpayer-funded abortion. It would only take the replacement of just one Republican-appointed justice to give liberal activists a solid majority on the Supreme Court.

Money is fungible: The $500 million taxpayers give to Planned Parenthood may not [currently] be used to pay for abortions directly (according to the amendment), but that’s a $500 million cushion on top of which Planned Parenthood can conduct its slaughterous business. But at least the amendment recognizes, and seeks modestly to accommodate, people’s differences of conscience on this issue.

[Hillary Clinton] has chosen to take a stronger stance on abortion during this campaign [compared to 2008]. As a senator and throughout her career Clinton has supported pro-choice policies, but she has also come under fire in the past from pro-choice advocates for what they say is language that stigmatizes abortion.

Clinton’s past mantra on the procedure has been “safe, legal, and rare,” a formulation that suggests there’s something inherently wrong with abortion. Now, though, instead of talking about reducing the number of abortions, or insisting that they should be rare, she seems to be heeding the call of reproductive rights and justice activists such as Aimee Thorne-Thomsen, the vice-president for strategic partnerships at Advocates for Youth, who has written: “What if we stopped focusing on the number of abortions and instead focused on the women themselves?”

The vice president spoke to 3,500 LGBT activists and leaders in a cavernous subterranean ballroom at the Washington Convention Center for the annual Human Rights Campaign dinner, a speaking gig Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton turned down in order to appear on “Saturday Night Live,” The New York Times reported.

Biden is close to deciding on a 2016 presidential bid against Clinton, and the LGBT community is an important constituency for any Democrat eyeing the White House. He contrasted with the former secretary of state at one point on Saturday, telling gay rights activists that equality would come easily now — even though just hours before Clinton had warned the same group that further change would be difficult.

Though Clinton gave up the keynote spot to the vice president, she addressed the group’s breakfast meeting early Saturday instead, giving the first speech of her 2016 campaign exclusively focused on LGBT rights. She thanked the Human Rights Campaign for helping “change a lot of minds, including mine” on marriage equality.

On policy, Clinton and Biden lined up almost perfectly. They both called for a new focus on transgender rights and working to expand LGBT rights abroad. They identified the same three specific domestic policy goals: A federal equality act that would extend civil rights protections to LGBT Americans, allowing trans people serve in the military, and upgrading to “honorable discharge” the status of service members who were kicked out of the military under Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.

Biden, who is considering running for president, declared transgender rights to be "the civil rights issue of our time" as he delivered the keynote speech, just hours after Hillary Rodham Clinton — his top rival if he enters the race — gave a rousing address elevating LGBT rights as a main pillar of 2016 bid. Biden said gays and lesbians shouldn't fear "those shrill voices" trying to undo gay marriage and other advances because Americans "have moved so far beyond them and their appeals to prejudice and fear and homophobia."

Globally, around 80 percent of maternal deaths are due to obstetric complications; mainly haemorrhage, sepsis, unsafe abortion, pre-eclampsia and eclampsia, and prolonged or obstructed labour […] Almost all cases of maternal mortality are preventable. An estimated 74 percent of maternal deaths could be averted if all women had access to the interventions for preventing or treating pregnancy and birth complications, in particular emergency obstetric care.

Hillary Fights AIDS, Embraces Homosexuality

Hillary Clinton, as Secretary of State, announced her goal of an “AIDS-free generation” by employing EVERY means possible, EXCEPT for sexual morality. Secretary Clinton named lesbian celebrity Ellen DeGeneres as Special Envoy for Global AIDS Awareness, but never mentioned that male homosexual behavior was the origin of the AIDS pandemic and remains responsible for spreading the disease.

Since the deadly pandemic began 30 years ago, more than 60 million people have been infected with HIV worldwide and more than 30 million have died. An estimated 34 million people are living with the virus. About 2.6 million people get infected each year, but the numbers of infections and deaths have been falling.

Experts estimate the cost to be as much as $26 billion annually by 2015 and perhaps $35 billion a year by 2031. About $16 billion a year is being spent on such AIDS prevention now. But the amount of spending has been dropping worldwide.

The only reference Clinton made in her speech to sex was when she called for “repealing laws that make people criminals simply because of their sexual orientation.”

According to the CDC, in the United States in 2009, 23,846 males were diagnosed with HIV resulting from male-to-male sexual conduct. Some 12,860 heterosexuals were infected from sexual contact and 131 cases were transmitted from mother to child in the womb. The number of people in the “other category,” which includes blood transfusions, was 76.

Also, according to the CDC, men who have sex with men, or MSM, “account for just 2% of the U.S. population, but accounted for 61% of all new HIV infections in 2009. MSM accounted for 49% of people living with HIV infection in 2008 (the most recent year prevalence data are available).”

He said in a statement released by the White House that the United States "stands proudly with those nations that are standing up to intolerance, discrimination, and homophobia."

Following tense negotiations, members of the Geneva-based UN Human Rights Council narrowly voted in favor of the declaration put forward by South Africa, with 23 votes in favor and 19 against.

Backers included the United States, the European Union, Brazil, and other Latin American countries. Those against included Russia, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, and Pakistan. China, Burkina Faso, and Zambia abstained, Kyrgyzstan didn’t vote, and Libya was suspended from the rights body earlier.

Countries that voted against the Friday's declaration contended that it actually disregarded universal human rights, not protected them.

Speaking on behalf of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, Shafqat Ali Khan of Pakistan said before the vote that the conference was concerned the Council was discussing controversial notions of sexual orientation.

"We are seriously concerned at the attempt to introduce to the United Nations some notions that have no legal foundation in any international human rights instrument."

Ositadinma Anaedu, the representative from Nigeria, criticized South Africa for breaking ranks with African countries and siding with the West. He said more than 90 percent of the African people did not support this resolution.

Obama Administration Advances Gay Agenda at U.N.

Homosexualists worldwide celebrated after the United Nations General Assembly voted in favor of an amendment submitted by the U.S., and advocated by Hillary Clinton, to include sexual orientation in a resolution condemning unjustified slayings.

The 192-nation U.N. General Assembly voted to restore a reference to killings due to sexual orientation that had been deleted from a resolution condemning unjustified slayings. The shift came after the United States submitted an amendment to restore the reference, which the General Assembly’s human rights committee removed last month from a resolution on extrajudicial, summary and arbitrary executions that is adopted every two years.

The U.S. amendment that restored the reference to sexual orientation was adopted with 93 votes in favor, 55 against and 27 abstentions. The amended resolution was then approved with 122 yes votes, one against and 62 abstentions. (Saudi Arabia cast the sole vote against the resolution, and the United States was among those who abstained.)

Not everyone was happy. Zimbabwe’s U.N. Ambassador Chitsaka Chipaziwa told the General Assembly that there was no need to refer explicitly to sexual orientation: “We will not have it foisted on us. We cannot accept this, especially if it entails accepting such practices as bestiality, pedophilia and those other practices many societies would find abhorrent in their value systems.” A European diplomat later told Reuters that Chipaziwa’s statement was “disgraceful.”

A coalition of African countries said it was "greatly alarmed" that the direct reference to sexual orientation was included, and called it an attempt "to create new rights, new standards or new groups."

President Obama said the vote "marks an important moment in the struggle for civil and human rights."

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the U.S. reintroduced the language to send an unequivocal message that "No one should be killed for who they are."

"Sadly, many people around the world continue to be targeted and killed because of their sexual orientation," she said. "These heinous crimes must be condemned and investigated wherever they occur."

A culture war has broken out at the United Nations over whether gays should be singled out for the same protections as other minorities whose lives are threatened.

Benin, a largely Christian country of 8 million with a sizable Muslim population, argued that "sexual orientation had no legal foundation in any international human rights instruments." Morocco, an Arab country in north Africa that is almost exclusively Muslim, asserted that such selectivity "accommodated particular interests and groups over others" and urged all U.N. member states "to devote special attention to the protection of the family as the natural and fundamental unit of society."

More than two-thirds of U.N. members, many of them Muslim nations, are refusing to sign a separate United Nations statement condemning human rights violations based on sexual orientation and gender identity, especially with regard to the application of the death penalty and extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions.

Under the Bush administration in 2008, even the United States refused to join all other Western nations in signing that declaration, arguing that the broad framing of the language in the statement might conflict with U.S. laws.

With support from the European Union, the Nordic countries and Canada, the US launched a massive campaign to re-insert “sexual orientation” into a UN resolution before final approval in the General Assembly. Reportedly, the US was working “at the highest levels” to push countries to support its amendment.

One delegation blasted the US-led attempt to reintroduce “sexual orientation” into the text as “international legal adventurism.”

President Obama applauded supporters of the US amendment. In a statement, Obama said, “While today’s adoption of an inclusive resolution is important, so too are the conversations that have now begun in capitals around the world about inclusion, equality, and discrimination.”

The high-level political pressure exerted in this resolution caps an aggressive year-long campaign by the Obama administration to push “sexual orientation” issues at the UN and domestically.

World Changers of Florida filed the suit in the U.S. District Court in Fort Myers challenging the district’s decision to prohibit its members from passing out free Bibles on Religious Freedom Day, which is held each Jan. 16.

World Changers of Florida President Jerry Rutherford has handed out Bibles at the schools for two years, after former School Board Attorney Richard Withers said the district must provide access to groups wishing to pass out Bibles, subject to reasonable, nonjudgmental limitations as to the time, space and place for the event to occur.

Rutherford petitioned the Community Request Committee on Nov. 10, 2008, to make Bibles available to high school and to middle school students on Jan. 16, 2009.

Rutherford received a letter from then-Assistant Superintendent John Kelly on Jan. 13, 2009, which said Kelly, the chairman of the committee, had been advised by District Attorney Jon Fishbane that the request could not be considered by the committee.

In the suit, Orlando-based Liberty Counsel, a Christian law firm representing the World Changers of Florida, said other nonprofit groups have been allowed to distribute literature on campuses, including military recruiters, Golden Gate American Little League, and the Humane Society of Naples. The lawsuit claims World Changers was denied its distribution request because the district wants to censor its message.

After a disclaimer that she would not speak for Canada, Clinton proceeded to lay out a position in opposition to that taken by conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s government, linking maternal health promotion in poor countries to “access to legal, safe abortion.”

Earlier this year, Harper announced that Canada would place the promotion of maternal and child health in the developing world at the center of its leadership of the G8.

Harper’s announcement focused on needs such as clean water, inoculations, nutrition and the training of healthcare and maternity staff, but it quickly sparked a debate over whether the policy would, or should, include abortion and contraception.

The advocacy group Action Canada for Population and Development launched a campaign pressing for the G8 initiative to include “a commitment to sexual and reproductive health care and services and family planning.”

On March 16, Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon declared that the maternal and child health initiative “does not deal in any way, shape or form with family planning. Indeed, the purpose of this is to be able to save lives.”

His comments set off a storm of controversy, and Harper two days later conceded that the policy would not exclude contraception. But he said his Conservative Party government did not wish to open a debate on abortion.

Global investment in family planning and female education could slow down global population growth, reducing future emissions and tackling climate change vulnerability.

Demographic factors will play a significant role in determining future emissions. The most obvious such factor is the global population, which is expected to rise to around nine billion by 2050.

Rising population is significant not only as a driver of emissions but also as a key factor in determining the vulnerability of developing countries to the impacts of global warming. In almost all of the climate change adaptation plans submitted to the United Nations by least-developed countries, rapid population growth is mentioned as something that either exacerbates vulnerability or impedes adaption. More than half of these least-developed countries will at least double in population by the middle of the century.

Ensuring universal access to family planning services and investing in female education is a pivotal climate change solution, Louise Carver of the Population and Sustainability Network (PSN) told the the Manchester panel. According to Carver, 200 million women wish to delay or prevent their next pregnancy but lack access to contraception. Despite this fact, and the sharp projected growth rate in potential contraception users, global investment in family planning is at an all-time low, having declined by 30% in real terms since the mid-1990s.

Some green activists have long advocated a greater focus on population control in the climate change campaign.

In a position paper adopted by its board of directors in November 2007, the Sierra Club said, “Given the grave implications of population growth, the Sierra Club urges greater effort to explain how population pressure is affecting the environment and stronger support for the program – family planning, health care, and education and opportunity for women – that most effectively encourages smaller families.”

Identifying an average of two children per family as a requirement to stabilize the world population, the paper said the Sierra Club “welcomes non-coercive, culturally sensitive policies that will help lower birth rates, stabilize global population, and make a smaller population a realistic possibility.”

In 2007, an Australian academic argued that a government campaign to encourage bigger families was flying in the face of the fight against climate change.

Rather than offering couples financial incentives to have more children, he said, a tax should be levied on parents who have more than an agreed number of children, “in line with the ‘polluter pays’ principle.”

The Chinese government, which enforces a controversial and often coercive birth limitation policy, has listed its population control efforts among its contributions to combating climate change.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will enact a new policy providing homosexual State Department employees and their partners the same benefits as married employees, according to Gays and Lesbians in Foreign Affairs Agencies, who received an advanced memo from Clinton.

The Bush administration had eased some [State Department] rules, opening up some training to same-sex partners, but had resisted efforts to treat homosexual partners the same as married couples. Thus a wide array of benefits were denied to same-sex partners, such as paid travel to and from overseas posts, employment opportunities at the embassy, visas and diplomatic passports, mail privileges and evacuation in case of a security emergency or medical necessity.

In the memo, Clinton said: "At bottom, the department will provide these benefits for both opposite-sex and same-sex domestic partners because it is the right thing to do."

State Department officials said the memo to the gay and lesbian organization indicates the direction Clinton hopes to go, but the final policy document is still in draft form and requires additional consultation within the department.

Earlier this year, nearly 2,200 government employees involved in foreign policy issues signed a letter to Clinton calling on the government to give equal benefits to same-sex partners.

World-wide Anti-family Forces Seek Obama's Support

A global children’s rights treaty, ratified by every U.N. member except the United States and Somalia, has so alarmed its American critics that some are pushing to add a parental rights amendment to the Constitution as a buffer.

The nearly 20-year-old treaty has ardent supporters and opponents in the United States, and both sides agree that its chances of ratification — while still uncertain — are better under the Obama administration than at any point in the past.

Opponents of the treaty contend it would enable government officials and a Geneva-based U.N. committee of experts to interfere with parental authority. Its supporters view the treaty as a valuable guidepost for children’s basic rights — including education, health care and protection from abuse — and say its global goals are undermined by the refusal of the world’s lone superpower to ratify it.

[Treaty advocates] ranging from Amnesty International to the Girl Scouts of the USA [have] learned to be patient, and hope an all-out push for Senate ratification will be mounted by the third year of Barack Obama’s presidency.

Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), who chairs a Foreign Relations subcommittee handling human rights issues, has declared her strong support for ratifying the children’s rights treaty. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, as first lady back in 1995, also advocated on behalf of the treaty, while Obama, during his election campaign, suggested that U.S. failure to ratify was “embarrassing” and promised to review the treaty.

The treaty’s opponents say they will be ready to fight back, and the proposed parental rights amendment is a key part of their strategy.

Introduced this spring by Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-Mich.), the amendment now has 80 of his fellow Republicans as co-sponsors in the House. The amendment also has been introduced in the Senate by Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), who hasn’t yet announced co-sponsors.

One would think that those [evangelicals] who supposedly [sic] care so much for the moral and spiritual well-being of their fellow Americans would not be so eager to pass legislation with the sole purpose of enabling their friends to store up treasures in earthly places, where moth and rust destroy (Matthew 6:19). After all, was it not Christ who suggested that we give all we have to the poor so that we can have treasures in heavenly places where moth and rust do not destroy and where thieves do not break in and steal (Matthew 6:20).

The American Values Network grew out of a desire among left-leaning faith activists to "build a national organization committed to grass-roots building, networking, communicating, and activating a mainstream and authentic voice that would organize and speak out for progressive policy and issues from a faith and values perspective," Strider says. "We wanted something that would amplify and work in harmony with groups such as [progressive faith groups] Sojourners, Faith and Public Life, and Catholics in Alliance."

Hillary Receives Planned Parenthood's Margaret Sanger Award

In accepting the award, Obama's envoy to the world equated pro-life advocacy to anti-democratic belief that "often leads to violence and extremism."

Clinton vowed her support for these issues during a speech Friday evening at the Planned Parenthood Federation of America's national conference in Houston.

She was honored by Planned Parenthood with its Margaret Sanger Award, the organization's highest honor, for her work throughout her public service career on behalf of women's health and reproductive rights.

Clinton says these rights are building blocks of democracy as societies that deny and demean women's roles are ones more likely to engage in behavior that is negative, antidemocratic and that leads to violence and extremism.

[Consider] the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child, an internation treaty approved by the Clinton administration but stalled by opposition in the Senate, as one example of governmental attempts to infringe on parental rights.

Though efforts to pass a constitutional amendment protecting parental rights have failed in the past, two U.S. legislators are preparing to reintroduce the idea this week; and this time, they say, the effort is backed by more than 60 congressional members.

Rep. Peter Hoekstra, R-Mich., who introduced a parental rights amendment by himself last year, told the Agence France-Presse that he will be joined by Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., on Tuesday as they renew the fight.

Democratic Candidates Trying to Reach Religious Voters

Tired of being seen by religious voters as too secular or even hostile toward religion, the Democrat party and its presidential candidates have launched an all-out effort to win their votes.

This effort is apparent on the stump, where many of the Democratic candidates speak openly of religion and God and present moral justifications for their policies. It's also going on behind the scenes, with presidential campaigns hiring strategists to coordinate their outreach to religious communities and holding weekly conference calls with religious leaders.

"It has to be authentic. This is not about Jesus-ing up the party, so to speak ... It just won't work if it's seen as a cynical ploy," said Mara Vanderslice, a Democratic strategist and evangelical Christian.

In 2004, Vanderslice was hired to coordinate John Kerry's religious outreach. She found herself working without a staff or much of a budget. She says the Kerry campaign failed to engage the faith community before it was too late to make a difference.

In the past, "there was almost a joke that you couldn't be a Christian and be a Democrat," she said.

Many voters wouldn't disagree with the joke, according to recent polling. In the 2006 midterm elections, 53 percent of weekly churchgoers voted Republican, as did 60 percent of people who attend church more than once a week, according to exit poll data. What's more, a Pew Forum poll taken just before the election showed only 26 percent of voters considered Democrats friendly to religion.

"They want to pull away even several percentage points of religious people who up to now have voted Republican," said Michael Cromartie, who studies religion and politics at the Ethics and Public Policy Center in Washington. "Remember, just a few percentage points in any number of states can change an election."

Senator Hillary Clinton has talked about how faith saw her through the turmoil of Bill Clinton's infidelity and political difficulties. Senator John Edwards openly speaks of his "deep and abiding love for [his] Savior, Jesus Christ." Senator Barack Obama has long woven the language of religion into his call for shared responsibility and social justice.

Even bigger changes have taken place behind the scenes.
Clinton and Obama have both hired strategists to coordinate faith outreach. Obama also has a faith point person in each of the three early voting states of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. His campaign held a series of "Faith, Action, Change" forums with New Hampshire voters and hosts weekly conference calls for religious leaders.

Sen. Clinton Renounces Defense of Marriage Act

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is renouncing her support for the Defense of Marriage Act, or DOMA, a measure her husband signed into law in 1996 that bans federal recognition of same-sex "marriages." She is on the record as recently as July 2004 saying she believed marriage is a "sacred bond" between a man and a woman.

In May 2005, the senator from New York told CNN, "Well, I don't know many Democrats who support gay marriage. In fact, I don't and haven't for, you know, years before I became a senator." But apparently Senator Clinton now can be counted among several Democrats to do support same-sex marriage, because she says she no longer supports DOMA. The Democratic presidential frontrunner spelled out her new position in a candidate questionnaire for the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), a homosexual activist group in Washington.

Results from the questionnaire also indicate unanimous support from seven Democratic presidential hopefuls on such homosexual-related issues as civil unions and federal benefits for same-sex couples; passage of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) and so-called "hate crimes" legislation; homosexual adoption; and repeal of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy on homosexuals serving in the military. Interestingly, all but one candidate -- Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) -- oppose "allowing civil marriage rights for same-sex couples."

Hillary Clinton, former First Lady and junior Senator from New York, released a statement for “Gay and Lesbian Pride Month” in which she told homosexual activists that the victories for the homosexual agenda obtained by Congressional Democrats and others in the past year are only shades of things to come.

...“For six long years, the Bush Administration has only seen the families that matter to them. It's been a government of the few, by the few, and for the few,” Clinton continued.

“But when I take office in January 2009, we'll finally be able to define success by more than the bigotry we stopped and the bad decisions we prevented. America will finally have a president who moves this country forward.”

“She is calling anyone, specifically the President, but anyone else like the President who doesn’t embrace her brand of moral relativism [a bigot],” said Matt Barber, Concerned Women for America’s Policy Director for Cultural Issues to LifeSiteNews.com.

“If the dynamics were such that we had Hillary Clinton in the oval office and a liberal controlled congress then I think there is no doubt … that she will essentially remove any barrier to protection between first amendment freedoms and the radical homosexual agenda.”

Clinton promised a broad expansion of federal hate crimes laws, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), and the end of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy in the military.

Barber explained ENDA and the hate crimes legislation are imperatives of the homosexual agenda that “set the table for religious persecution and puts us on a slippery slope to silence any opposition to homosexual lifestyle that is rooted in sincerely held religious beliefs.”

Clinton has positioned herself as the de facto leader of homosexual activists in the United States when she told the homosexual activist group, Human Rights Campaign (HRC), “I am proud to stand by your side” and spoke enthusiastically of the “agenda we are pursuing.”

In an unpublicized appearance March 2, 2007 speaking for The Human Rights Campaign (one of the nation's most powerful gay advocacy organizations), presidential candidate Hillary Clinton spoke of her role in defeating the Federal Marriage Amendment and promised to work hard to:

• Expand federal hate crimes legislation
• Pass ENDA (Employment Non-discrimination Act)
• Pass Domestic Partners Benefits and Obligations Act (which would provide benefits for the 'partners' of homosexuals and unmarried heterosexual federal employees
• Gay Adoption -- Pass legislation making it illegal for adoption agencies to prefer to place children in homes with a married mother and father
