Porn Causes Erectile Dysfunction: Psychiatrists

Prolific pornography is flooding society with imaginary feminine perfection and images of perpetual sexual experiences resulting in a generation of men who are not aroused by women in the flesh.
"So one of the first assessment questions I'd always ask now is about pornography and masturbatory habit because that can be the cause of their issues about maintaining an erection with a partner."

“Due to the pornography available on the Internet, we are finding out that this type of sex dysfunction is a real entity,” Dr. David B. Samadi, chairman of the urology department and chief of robotic surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, told Everyday Health. “It is a problem in the brain, not the penis.”

Samadi said porn addiction could theoretically harm someone of any age’s sexual performance, but that he mostly sees it among young men in their teens and 20s. About 40 million adults in the U.S. visit porn websites on a regular basis, according to Psych Guides.

“In my particular practice, I will say 15 to 20 percent of the erectile dysfunction I see is related to porn consumption,” Dr. Muhammed Mirza, an internist based in Jersey City, told Everyday Health.

Samadi compared the issue to alcohol. Someone who drinks more and more alcohol eventually builds up a tolerance and needs more to feel the effects. Additionally, porn can set up unrealistic expectations for reality.

One survey of 28,000 Italian men found that "excessive consumption" of porn, starting at age 14, and daily consumption in their early to mid-20s, desensitized men to even the most violent images. According to the head of the Italian Society of Andrology and Sexual Medicine, this can cause male sexual dysfunction by lowering libido and eventually leading to an inability to get an erection.

It’s not necessarily how much porn a person watches. The type can also play a role, Samadi said. Unlike the soft-core porn images seen in such magazines as Playboy or Penthouse, online pornography is generally more graphic and often depicts kinky, deviant, or even violent behavior. It's also available 24/7.

Chronic porn consumption can cause a shift in brain chemicals that may contribute to organic erectile dysfunction, said Dr. Mirza. “Your expectations become much higher than normal,” he said. "If you look at any porn video image, they are magnified. This is not what the normal anatomy looks like.”

"'Reel' life is very different than real life," said Nicole Sachs, LCSW, a social worker in Rehoboth, Del., and the author of "The Meaning of Truth." The unrealistic imagery seen in some pornography can make men or women feel self-conscious, which could lead to problems with sexual function or intimacy, she said.

Alexander Rhodes grew up in a home full of computers . . . Soon the initial curiosity evolved into a daily devotion to hard-core pornography — an explorative compulsion turned addiction with up to 14 porn sessions a day . . .

The routine continued once he enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh, where he started a relationship with a young woman and soon discovered problems with his own sexual performance. He couldn’t continue without fantasizing about pornography. Nothing quite worked when he focused solely on her.

That was the turning point.

What Mr. Rhodes and others describe as porn addiction and porn-induced erectile dysfunction are hot topics among psychologists, psychiatrists, researchers and even pornographers. In time he finally quit the porn habit and founded the successful porn-recovery platform NoFap.com.

More Rare Disease Rampant Among Homosexual Men

Health officials in locales where homosexual men concentrate are perplexed by recent outbreaks of invasive meningococcal disease, which kills one in ten of those infected.
“Certainly my patients have shown concern that something is running through the [homosexual] community like wildfire.”

There’s no known medical reason why meningitis, which is transmitted through saliva, would spread more among gay and bisexual men. Yet New York, Chicago and now Southern California have experienced outbreaks disproportionately affecting that population.

Gladstein, who is also an HIV specialist, said he thinks that the cases are likely among men who have multiple sexual partners, engage in anonymous sex and use drugs that make them more susceptible.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the New York City Department of Public Health launched a project to investigate the connection between gay men and meningitis. It’s possible that L.A. County will be included in the study as well, officials said.

The research may also consider whether meningitis can be transmitted in other ways, such as sexual routes that might be making gay men more susceptible, [medical epidemiologist at L.A. County’s Department of Public Health, Dr. Rachel] Civen said. The bacteria Neisseria meningitidis that leads to meningitis is known to colonize the throat and mouth, but researchers will investigate whether it can also colonize other parts of the body, such as the genitals or anus.

Meningitis is spread through close contact with an infected person. People can contract it through kissing, coughing or sneezing, or sharing cigarettes or drugs. It also spreads among people in group settings – like dorms, jails or shelters.

Symptoms of meningitis usually occur within five days. They include high fever, stiff neck, skin rash, severe headache, low blood pressure, sensitivity to bright lights and generalized muscle pains. The infection can cause brain damage, hearing loss and death. It progresses quickly, so immediate diagnosis and treatment is imperative, health experts say.

Los Angeles County and Orange County health officials urged all gay and bisexual men in the county to obtain vaccines today, regardless of their risk status, as the spread of meningitis has officially been labeled an outbreak by the state.

A spike in the number of new meningitis cases in May and June heightened the alarm among officials, hearkening back to the most recent outbreak of meningococcal disease, which occurred in 2014. However, the term "outbreak," as defined by the CDC, means the diagnosis of three or more cases over the course of three months, which is not necessarily a cause for panic, said The LGBTQ Center of Long Beach's Director of Health and Wellness Ismael Salamanca.

Failed Sexual Utopia Plagued by Rampant Disease

President Obama's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is reporting record high new cases of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), thus demonstrating complete failure of health agencies and government schools for a safe sexual revolution.
“We need to do a better job of giving our young people the skills and knowledge they need to protect their own health.  It’s important to teach students about healthy relationships and how to reduce sexual risk before they start to have sex.”
-- Dr. Jonathan Mermin, director of CDC’s National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and Tuberculosis Prevention
One simple fact is being ignored:  STDs could be eradicated via simple moral, monogamous marriages.

The CDC’s new report shows STD like chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis increased dramatically in 2014 [the latest year tabulated].

In 2014, 1.4 million cases of chlamydia were reported to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention a 2.8 percent increase since 2013. This is the highest number of cases of any STD ever reported to the CDC, the government researchers said in the annual report.

In 2014, there were just over 350,000 reported cases of gonorrhea — a rate of nearly 111 per 100,000 people. In addition, there were 20,000 reported cases of syphilis — a rate of about 6 per 100,000, the report said.

The most vulnerable populations, particularly young people, women and gay and bisexual men, continue to be hardest hit . . . men who have sex with men accounts for 90 percent of new cases of primary and secondary syphilis.

The number of US cases stayed relatively stable [yet high] from 2010 until 2014, when the figures started to creep up. Health officials say there’s no obvious explanation for why, although rates of other sexually transmitted diseases are increasing, too.

Health officials say they are eyeing a handful of reasons, including increasing PrEP use among men who have sex with men. PrEP, or pre-exposure prophylaxis, is a pill taken daily to prevent HIV infection in people who are at risk of getting the virus. Officials are concerned that people taking PrEP might not realize it doesn’t protect against other STDs, and engage in sexual activity that puts them at greater risk for contracting infections like syphilis.

The report is based on CDC’s 2014 School Health Profiles, which surveys schools across the country on whether or not they teach all 16 recommended sexual health education topics, as well as other major health subjects.

For middle schools, the proportion teaching all 16 recommended topics ranged from 4 percent in Arizona to 46 percent in North Carolina. In no state did more than half of middle schools meet the goal, and in most states less than 20 percent did.

These numbers are cause for concern, experts say, as young people continue to face serious but avoidable sexual health risks.

Florida Defunds Planned Parenthood, Liberals Fume

Yesterday, Florida Governor Rick Scott signed House Bill (HB) 1411 to eliminate all state funding of any organization that performs abortions.  The new law that takes effect July 1st also bans sale of aborted fetus remains and enacts requirements for fetus disposal.  Planned Parenthood, which is spending about as much money fighting the legislation as it receives annually from the state, may contest the law in court as unconstitutional.
“Abortionists will finally be held to the same standard as all other physicians who perform invasive procedures in a non-hospital setting by the requirement to have admitting privileges or a transfer agreement with a nearby hospital.  It is incomprehensible that opponents suggest the bill makes women less safe.”

State funding of abortion was already prohibited in Florida, but the law signed by the Republican governor also cut off funding for preventive services at clinics that also provide abortions.

The law appeared to be aimed at Planned Parenthood, which said on Friday that it could mean the end of birth control, cancer screenings, tests for diseases and other services for thousands of low-income women in Florida.

Cecile Richards, the president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, said in a statement that the new law seemed “designed to rip health care away from those most at risk.”

Starting July 1, abortion clinics will be required to have admitting privileges or transfer agreements with a nearby hospital. They also will face annual inspections by the state as part of a law that sponsor Sen. Kelli Stargel, R-Lakeland, said is about ensuring women’s safety.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Florida, which has an ongoing lawsuit over a mandatory 24-hour abortion waiting period passed last year, said it hasn’t decided whether it will sue the state over the new law. The organization did decry Scott’s decision in a statement by executive director Howard Simon.

The law redefines the trimesters of a pregnancy, validating claims by state regulators last summer alleging Florida’s Planned Parenthood sites violated their licenses. And the funding cuts could affect six Planned Parenthood clinics.

From "Florida governor signs law tightening abortion clinic restrictions" by Margie Menzel, Florida Times-Union 3/25/16

The bill, which passed largely along party lines, restricts state agencies, local governments and Medicaid managed-care plans from contracting with organizations that own, operate or are affiliated with clinics that perform elective abortions. Duval County is one of the health departments with a Planned Parenthood contract that may be affected by that provision.

Senate sponsor Kelli Stargel, R-Lakeland, said on the Senate floor that the bill would likely close six of Florida’s 65 abortion clinics.

Additionally, the bill changes the definition of a first trimester to the period from fertilization through the end of the 11th week of pregnancy. That’s a different definition than the state has used in the past, but it’s consistent with an administrative action last year by the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration, which alleged that five clinics — including three Planned Parenthood facilities — performed second-trimester abortions without the proper licenses. Clinics have filed challenges, contending that the state changed the definition of a first trimester without notice.

From "Gov. Rick Scott Signs Abortion Bill Into Law" by Lynn Hatter, WFSU (PBS & NPR Tallahassee, FL) 3/25/16

“Would I like a bill that outlaws abortion? Sure. But that’s not what this bill does. Because that’s unconstitutional. Because we’re allowed to have a woman’s right to choose," Stargel argued prior to the bill passing the Senate.

Meanwhile, the Florida Family Policy Council is claiming a major victory. Last year the council’s John Stemberger criticized Governor Rick Scott for not banning state funding from flowing to Planned Parenthood after false accusations last summer that planned parenthood was illegally selling fetal remains caused a national uproar.

“We would have liked for him by executive order to de-fund Planned Parenthood without having to go through this process," Stemberger said. "But we are pleased he signed this today. He did the right thing, and so we’re happy about that. We wish he would have exercised leadership, but he followed the leadership of the legislature and the same result has occurred.”

Florida’s Planned Parenthood Clinics say they’ll weather the coming storm. Public dollars are already prohibited from funding abortions, but the bill would cut off reimbursements for routine preventive services as well if they are done by an abortion provider.

From "Gov. Rick Scott signs abortion restrictions bill into law" by Gray Rohrer, Orlando Sentinel 3/25/16

The law, which takes effect July 1, requires doctors performing abortions to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital, requires annual licensure inspections for clinics and bans the purchase, sell or transfer of fetal remains. The law upgrades the failure to properly dispose of fetal tissue from a second-degree misdemeanor to a first-degree misdemeanor.

A similar law in Texas, which women’s health activists say has helped shut down several abortion clinics there, is under review by the U.S. Supreme Court. During a debate on the Senate floor earlier this year, sponsor Kelli Stargel, R-Lakeland, said the bill would likely close six of Florida's 65 abortion clinics.

[Last year, Gov.] Scott’s investigation . . . did cite three clinics for performing abortions after the first trimester. Planned Parenthood disputed those allegations, and the case is still pending in court. A separate criminal investigation prompted by House Republicans turned up nothing.

Yesterday, Gov. Republican Gov. Mike Pence signed the measure just hours ahead of his deadline to take action on the proposal approved by the Republican-dominated Legislature two weeks ago, the governor's office said. It is due to take effect in July, but Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky said it will ask a court to block the measure before that can happen.

Pence called the bill "a comprehensive pro-life measure that affirms the value of all human life."

Pence was a prominent abortion rights opponent while serving in Congress before being elected governor in 2012 and received perfect scores from Indiana Right to Life for his record of opposing abortion.

Pence is also facing a tough re-election campaign in a rematch against Democrat John Gregg and will be counting on a strong turnout from his evangelical base in November. Gregg said Thursday he would have vetoed the measure.

From "Indiana Governor Signs Abortion Bill With Added Restrictions" by Mitch Smith, New York Times 3/24/16

The law, which passed both chambers of the Republican-controlled General Assembly with large majorities, builds on Indiana’s already restrictive abortion rules, and was cheered by anti-abortion groups that had encouraged Gov. Mike Pence to sign it.

In addition to holding doctors liable if a woman has an abortion solely because of objections to the fetus’s race, sex or a disability, like Down syndrome, the law restricts fetal tissue donation and requires doctors performing abortions to have admitting privileges at a hospital or to have an agreement with a doctor who does.

The measure drew a sharp rebuke from the Planned Parenthood Action Fund and other abortion rights groups, and the law returned Indiana to the center of a national debate about social issues.

The law could also put some doctors who perform abortions in jeopardy if it is learned that a woman told them that she chose to end her pregnancy because of gender, disabilities or other reasons limited by the law.

From "Pence signs new abortion restrictions into law with a prayer" by Chelsea Schneider and Tony Cook, Indianapolis Star 3/25/16

It's a divisive issue that's once again placed the state at the center of a national debate. And a legal challenge to the law, which takes effect in July, is already in the works. Less than half an hour after Pence signed the measure, Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky said it plans to request a preliminary injunction to block the new restrictions . . . [by] working with the American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana in its plans to file a legal challenge.

“By enacting this legislation, we take an important step in protecting the unborn, while still providing an exception for the life of the mother. I sign this legislation with a prayer that God would continue to bless these precious children, mothers and families,” Pence said in a statement.

The controversial and potentially unconstitutional measure further restricts abortion in Indiana — already one of the most restrictive states in the nation. . . .

Social conservative groups, including Indiana Right to Life and the American Family Association of Indiana, had advocated for the new restrictions. Micah Clark, the leader of the family association, has said the measure “protects these special needs children from an intentional abortion based upon their genetics” in an email to supporters.

From "Indiana Bans Abortions Based On Gender, Race And Prenatal Diagnosis Of Disabilities" by Reuters 3/25/16

Republicans ushered the bill through the state legislature over the last three months despite opposition from some conservative lawmakers, including Representative Cindy Kirchhofer, who felt the measure was too restrictive.

North Dakota is the only U.S. state that prohibits abortions based on fetal anomalies. Seven states ban those based on gender, and Arizona prohibits those based on race, according to the Guttmacher Institute, an organization that tracks abortion laws.

. . . The bill also has several other abortion-related measures, including a requirement that aborted or miscarried babies’ bodies be cremated or buried and another requirement that abortionists who have hospital admitting privileges renew them annually. The burial/cremation requirement backs up a law passed in 2015 by Gov. Pence requiring that aborted babies’ bodies be disposed of in a humane way.

Indiana state Sen. Liz Brown, who worked with [Sen. Travis] Holdman on the measure, said previously that many families face pressure to abort from doctors or other health care professionals when their babies are diagnosed with an illness or disability in the womb. LifeNews has documented numerous cases of families saying the same thing.

“What we hear from doctors is — it would really be better off if you were not born,” Brown said. “If you are born, we will love you, and we think you have equal rights and should be a member of society. In fact, we have the Americans with Disabilities Act and have to make accommodations. But we don’t want to make the accommodation before you’re born, and in fact, it would really be easier if you were not born.”

. . . questions remain about whether the bill will have much of a practical impact on the decisions women make or on Indiana's abortion rate, which has declined 20 percent in the past five years and is below the national average.

. . . it's unclear how the law would play out in real life. The proposed ban on abortions would apply only when the sole reason for seeking the procedure is because the fetus may have a disability or is of a certain gender, race, color, national origin or ancestry.

Beth Cate, a public policy professor at Indiana University, questioned whether doctors would be left to infer a woman’s reasons for seeking an abortion based on her medical questions.

How do you know the reason a woman is seeking an abortion unless she explicitly states it — or does the doctor try to read her mind?

Government Predicts Black Men Will Get Gay Disease

In a first-of-its-kind analysis, President Obama's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported this week that African-American males who engage in anal sex have a 50-50 chance of contracting HIV during their lifetime.  The risk for Latino men is 25%.

The report, released at the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections in Boston, is the first to take a look at any given person's lifetime risk of becoming infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that causes AIDS.

"At current rates, 1 in 2 African American men who have sex with men (MSM) and 1 in 4 Hispanic MSM will be diagnosed with HIV in their lifetime, compared with 1 in 11 white MSM," CDC said.

The findings present a stark reminder of the threat still posed by the AIDS virus 35 years after the illness was first detected, despite progress in treatment and prevention.

“It was really a clarion call,” said Dawn Fukuda, director of the HIV/AIDS division at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, who heard the report presented at the international Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections in Boston. “These are numbers that are pretty astounding.”

The report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is the first to project the lifetime risk of HIV infection state-by-state and among certain groups of people. Based on death data from 2009 through 2013, the CDC concluded that gay and bisexual men, African-Americans, and people who live in the South have the highest risk of infection.

President Obama's agency charged with ensuring the safety of the sexual revolution has determined that a homosexual pornography performer who had tested negative for HIV was, in fact HIV positive, and infected with rectal gonorrhea when he unknowingly infected a porn co-worker plus another person, as well as participated in unprotected anal sex with over a dozen others over a period of days.

Researchers say a 25-year-old male porn actor, labeled "Patient A," tested negative for HIV in 2014 and over the next 22 days had unprotected sex with at least 17 people who hailed from seven US states and four countries.

Then an HIV test came back positive, and further tests showed he likely transmitted the virus to two men: Another adult-film actor and a non-work-related partner tested HIV positive less than a month after their encounters with Patient A and showed a similar strain of the virus, reports Live Science.

Some porn companies require that actors have a negative HIV test within two weeks of filming. But MD Magazine reports tests can't detect the virus within the first 14 days of infection.

From "Porn Star Spreads HIV After Negative Test Result; CDC Warns Industry Needs More Than Testing" by Ali Venosa, Medical Daily 2/13/16

. . . This prompted an investigation into the partners' patient A had contact with between the time he received his negative result and his recent examination. Of the 17 named sexual contacts, the CDC found six were chronically HIV-infected; one had sexual contact with patient A before patient A was infected; and 10 were at risk for infection by patient A." And of the seven of 10 partners patient A had unprotected sex with, two became infected.

Adult film production companies first check a database to ensure the performers they hire have had a recent negative test before filming, the CDC said. But to partially protect performer privacy, production companies are only informed of whether a performer is cleared to perform (or not) on the basis of test results. Since patient A's onset didn't occur until 10 days after his negative test, companies hired him to perform in "bareback films," which involve condom-less anal sex among male performers. This, unfortunately, is only the beginning of the problem, the CDC said.

Employers are required to ensure a safe working environment by law, so the CDC suggests employing multiple strategies to reduce HIV transmission among adult performers. Frequent HIV testing, use of condoms, and some antiretroviral medicines are but a few effective methods the industry can consider. From "Testing Porn Stars Isn't Stopping HIV" by John Tozzi, Bloomberg Business 2/12/16

The debate over whether to force porn actors to wear condoms is a controversial one that’s been playing out for years in California, home of the multibillion-dollar American porn industry. An HIV outbreak in 2004 spooked the industry and briefly shut down production.

Adult film productions may face greater pressure on two fronts in 2016. On Feb. 18, a state board appointed by California's governor to set standards for workplace safety will vote on proposed regulations to explicitly mandate condom use on sets. In November, new rules for the industry will also be put to Californians statewide on a ballot measure that would, among other things, require condom use and allow any state resident to sue to enforce the law. Both could extend restrictions now in place in Los Angeles throughout the state.

The adult entertainment industry opposes the rules. The industry's own voluntary system requires performers to get biweekly HIV tests before working without condoms. Productions that adhere to those standards have not had an HIV transmission in more than a decade, says Eric Paul Leue, the recently hired executive director of the Free Speech Coalition, which represents adult film producers. . . .

3-Parent Babies are Ethical: Experts to Obama FDA

Experts from the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine are advising President Obama's Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to approve mitochondrial DNA replacement techniques (MRTs) to help about a hundred Americans give birth to creatures fabricated in a laboratory using genetic material from three unrelated people.  The experts promise that no scientists in the future will misuse the techniques to "play god" and create any Frankenstein babies.

-- From "Three-parent babies are ok, experts say" by NBC News 2/4/16

Such "three-parent" babies could be a way for people with a high risk of rare, devastating genetic diseases to have healthy children that are genetically their own, the National Academy of Medicine panel said.

And at first, the panel advised, only male embryos should be made this way until it's clear that dangerous mutations would not be passed down to future generations.

The FDA asked the academy, formerly known as the Institute of Medicine, to look at the three-person embryo processes, called mitochondrial replacement techniques (MRT). These are variations of in vitro fertilization, or IVF — the method that creates so-called "test-tube babies."

MRT adds a step [to IVF]: The mother's nuclear DNA would be removed and placed into the egg cell of another woman. The father's sperm would then be used to fertilize that hybrid egg.

The new techniques would be used to prevent the transmission of certain types of diseases that occur at the mitochondrial DNA level, the experts said.

From "Babies With Genes From 3 People Could Be Ethical, Panel Says" by Rob Stein, WBEZ-FM91.5 NPR (Chicago, IL) 2/3/16

Critics of the research, meanwhile, say the number of women who could benefit from the experiments is so small that it's not worth crossing a line that's long been considered off-limits — making genetic changes that could be passed down for generations.

"The possibility of what you could call 'mission creep' is very real," says Marcy Darnovsky, executive director of the Center for Genetics and Society, a watchdog group based in Berkeley, Calif. "People are talking about going forward not just with this but with the kind of genetic engineering that will produce outright genetically modified human beings."

Once that happens, Darnovsky says, "I think you get into a situation of where some people are genetically enhanced and other people are the regular old variety of human being. And I don't think that's a world we want to live in."

. . . The FDA email praised the "thoughtful work" of the panel and said the agency would be "reviewing" the recommendations. But it noted that the latest federal budget "prevents the FDA from using funds to review applications in which a human embryo is intentionally created or modified to include" changes that could be passed down to future generations. As a result, the email says, any such research "cannot be performed in the United States" at this time.

"I think it's a great step in the right direction," Mark Sauer, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Columbia University who is a member of one of the teams . . . "Politics as usual often gets in way of progress," Sauer said in a subsequent email. While the FDA statement would cause "undue delays" in his research, he added that he hoped it wouldn't permanently "necessarily halt the efforts."

"I think the field has come together to say, 'Let’s think about this together and go forward carefully,'" said Dr. Jeffrey Botkin, a professor of pediatrics and chief of medical ethics and humanities at the University of Utah.

Botkin sat on the 12-person committee that included top bioethics experts from Johns Hopkins, Caltech and Harvard.

"There's not a bright line between where this kicks over into unethical," [University of Utah, Department of Biochemistry Dr. Jared] Rutter said. "The technology that we have is expanding … more rapidly than our sophistication with thinking about how to use it."

From "Ethicists approve ‘3 parent’ embryos to stop diseases, but congressional ban remains" by Joel Achenbach, Washington Post 2/3/16

The committee, which was convened last year at the request of the Food and Drug Administration, concluded that it is ethically permissible to “go forward, but with caution” with mitochondrial replacement techniques (MRT), said the chairman, Jeffrey Kahn, a bioethicist at Johns Hopkins University.

But the advisory panel’s conclusions have slammed into a congressional ban: The omnibus fiscal 2016 budget bill passed by Congress late last year contained language prohibiting the government from using any funds to handle applications for experiments that genetically alter human embryos.

Thus the green light from the scientists and ethicists won't translate anytime soon into clinical applications that could potentially help families that want healthy babies, said Shoukhrat Mitalipov, a pioneer of the new technique at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, Ore.

“It seems like the FDA is disabled in this case by Congress," Mitalipov said. “At this point we’re still not clear how to proceed."

From "Report: It's ethical to test embryos from DNA of 3 people" by Lauran Neergaard, Medical Xpress 2/3/16

The genes that give us our hair and eye color, our height and other family traits—and some common diseases such as cancer—come from DNA in the nucleus of cells, the kind we inherit from both mom and dad.

But only mothers pass on mitochondrial DNA, to both daughters and sons. It encodes a mere 37 genes, but defects can leave cells without enough energy and can lead to blindness, seizures, muscle degeneration, developmental disorders, even death. Severity varies widely, and researchers estimate 1 in 5,000 children may inherit some degree of mitochondrial disease.

Critics have argued that the first such births would have to be tracked for decades to be sure they're really healthy, and that families could try adoption or standard IVF with a donated egg instead. And they say it crosses a fundamental scientific boundary by altering what's called the germline—eggs, sperm or embryos—in a way that could affect future generations.

"It is reckless to proceed with this form of germline modification," said Marcy Darnovsky of the Center for Genetics and Society, an advocacy group.

UK's Frankenstein: Designer Babies OK'd by Gov't

Today, the British Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) announced it authorized a private research firm to use abandoned babies, a.k.a. "leftover" embryos, to perform human genetic code editing.  Bioethicists have warned for years that such research will certainly lead to so-called "designer babies."
"This is the first step on a path that scientists have carefully mapped out towards the legalization of (genetically modified) babies."

Scientists say gene-editing techniques could one day lead to treatments for conditions like HIV, which causes AIDS, and inherited diseases like muscular dystrophy and sickle cell disease.

Peter Braude, an emeritus professor of obstetrics and gynecology at King's College London, said the mechanisms being investigated by [Dr. Kathy] Niakan and colleagues "are crucial in ensuring healthy, normal development and implantation" and could help doctors understand how to improve in vitro fertilization rates and prevent miscarriages.

The gene-editing technique was developed partly in the U.S. and scientists there have experimented with the method in animals and in human cells in the laboratory. Gene editing has not been used for any kinds of patient therapies yet.

Around the world, laws and guidelines vary widely about what kind of research is allowed on embryos, since it could change the genes of future generations. In the U.S., the National Institutes of Health cannot fund research on human embryos but private funding is allowed.

From "Britain gives scientists permission to genetically modify human embryos" by Rachel Feltman, Washington Post 2/1/16

The news comes less than a year after the first reports of human-gene editing — published by Chinese scientists in the journal Protein and Cell — using the fantastic and at times troubling technology known as CRISPR. By harnessing an ancient defense mechanism built into bacteria, CRISPR allows scientists to target, delete and replace specific genes. It has been used extensively in other organisms, but research in humans has been slow.

The Chinese experiments reported last year were largely unsuccessful. Few of the embryos in the experiment were successfully modified, and even fewer had the changes that scientists intended to make. None of the embryos were gestated, and the authors of the study readily admitted that their error rate was too high for use on viable embryos.

. . . Britain now has become the first country to approve the use of public funding for such research. In the United States, labs have to find private funding for any research that creates or destroys human embryos, and some lawmakers seek to ban it altogether. Even in China, where the first "successful" editing occurred, the guidelines are murky.

The University of Kent's Darren Griffin called the [HFEA] ruling "a triumph for common sense" in a statement, and Sarah Norcross, director of Progress Educational Trust, lauded the decision as "a victory for level-headed regulation over moral panic."

Scientists will be focusing on the first seven days of a fertilized egg's growth. In these early days, a fertilized egg evolves from a single cell to around 250 cells.

The research, which will be led by Dr. Kathy Niakan, will take place at the Francis Crick Institute in London and has been hailed as a "triumph for common sense" by leading figures of the British science community.

However, the research has also raised concerns that it could pave the way for "designer babies" -- going beyond health improvements and modifying everything from a child's eye color to intelligence.

From "British scientists granted permission to genetically modify human embryos" by Sarah Knapton, Science Editor, UK Telegraph 2/1/16

Currently around 50 per cent of fertilised eggs do not develop properly and experts believe that faulty genetic code could be responsible.

If scientists knew which genes were crucial for healthy cell division, then they could screen out embryos where their DNA was not working properly, potentially preventing miscarriages and aiding fertility.

The team at Francis Crick are already in talks with fertility clinics across the country to use their spare embryos.

Dr Calum MacKellar, Director of Research of the Scottish Council on Human Bioethics said: “Allowing the gene editing of embryos opens the road to genetically modifying all the descendants of a person as well as full blown eugenics which was condemned by all civilised societies after the Second World War.”

[Dr. Kathy] Niakan has said she is planning to modify the embryos using a technique known as CRISPR-Cas9, which allows scientists to insert, remove and correct DNA within a cell.

The embryos will not become children as they must be destroyed within 14 days and can only be used for basic research.

She plans to find the genes at play in the first few days of fertilisation when an embryo develops a coating of cells that later become the placenta.

The embryos to be used in the research are ones that would have been destroyed, donated by couples receiving In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) treatment who do not need them.

Prof Robin Lovell-Badge, group leader at the Francis Crick Institute . . . said it would also provide invaluable information about the accuracy and efficiency of the technique, helping to inform the debate about whether genome editing could be used in future to correct faulty genes that cause devastating diseases.

That prospect remains a long way off but is already a subject of concern. There are also fears that changes to an embryo’s DNA could have unknown harmful consequences throughout a person’s body and be passed on down the generations.

Last year, leading UK funders called for a national debate on whether editing human embryos could ever be justified in the clinic. Some fear that a public backlash could derail less controversial uses of genome editing, which could lead to radical new treatments for disease.

After the announcement Anne Scanlan, the education director of Life, said . . . “[HFEA] has ignored the warnings of over a hundred scientists worldwide and given permission for a procedure, which could have damaging far-reaching implications for human beings. We do not know what long term side effects the tampering with some strands of DNA could have on other strands. However once genetic changes have been made they will be irreversible and handed down to future generations.”

Miss Scanlan added: “We are also concerned that such controversial intervention in the human germline opens up the very real possibility of eugenics where the existence of human beings becomes conditional on the possession of certain physical characteristics.

“Whilst we note the HFEA restriction on the implantation of genetically modified embryos, it is sending the wrong signals by allowing scientists the ability to develop and possibly perfect the technology here in the UK. To mitigate any advancement on the potentially dangerous work being undertaken by these British scientists, we believe that an international ban on human DNA editing is urgently needed to protect the future of the human species.”

Millennials' iPhone + Sex Addiction = STD Epidemic

Seeking casual sex?  There's an app for that!  Contracted a sexually transmitted disease?  There's an app for that TOO!
"You can buy anything online all the time.  Almost everything we can do instantaneously.  There's an expectation in our society for things to happen more quickly."
-- Dr. Ateev Mehrotra, Harvard Medical School
— Emotionally devastated over a broken relationship?  Sorry, there's NO app for that!

According to President Obama's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis have increased for the first time since 2006, with the per-capita incidence in California leading the way, especially in Los Angeles County.

Some public health experts have blamed the heavy use of online dating apps, arguing that they lead to more casual sex among people 25 and younger, who are the most likely to be infected and also the least inclined to seek testing . . .

Rates of chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis in the U.S. had been fluctuating for several years, but all surged in 2014. A particularly staggering statistic, the 1.4 million chlamydia cases reported that year, marked the highest number of annual cases of any condition ever reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to The [Los Angeles] Times.

From "What's causing the rise in STDs in L.A. County and how can technology help?" by Soumya Karlamangla, Los Angeles Times 1/25/16

Sexually active women under 25 are supposed to have annual screenings for [chlamydia and gonorrhea] infections, because they're considered high risk and bear the brunt of the consequences of most STDs. Each year, at least 24,000 women become infertile because of complications of STDs, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

. . . Last year, Planned Parenthood launched an app in California through which men and women can order chlamydia and gonorrhea tests. A paper found that in 2009 there were already 27 such services, and a Google search now yields hundreds of results.

One such start-up, based in Hollywood, began as a way to try to make sex safer, especially for people who might be using apps to find new partners.

In 2013, [Lora Ivanova and Ursula Hessenflow] launched myLAB Box, which sells test kits online for chlamydia and gonorrhea, HIV, trichomoniasis and hepatitis C. The kits — which cost $79 to $189 — require a urine sample, a vaginal swab or blood from a finger prick to send to the lab.

But AIDS Healthcare Foundation President Michael Weinstein worries that as these tests become more popular, it will be difficult to make sure people are getting treated once they're diagnosed.

Already, there are problems following up with patients who order tests online. In the program run by L.A. County's Health Department, only about half of the 9,000 kits mailed out were returned for testing, which is in line with other programs' results.

From "STDs on rise locally, nationally" by Lacey Peterson, The Union Democrat (Sonora, CA) 1/8/16

In 2014, 1.4 million cases of chlamydia were reported, a rate of 456.1 cases per 100,000 people, which was up 2.8 percent from 2013. Rates of primary and secondary syphilis (the most infectious stages of syphilis) and gonorrhea have both increased since 2013, by 15.1 percent and 5.1 percent, respectively.

In 2014, nationally there were 350,062 reported cases of gonorrhea (a rate of 110.7 per 100,000) and 19,999 reported cases of primary and secondary syphilis (6.3 per 100,000).

According to the CDC, syphilis has been called “the great imitator” because it has so many possible symptoms, many of which look like symptoms of other diseases.

The painless syphilis sore that a person may develop early in the infection can be confused for an ingrown hair, zipper cut, or other seemingly harmless bump, the CDC said.

People can also be infected with syphilis and have mild symptoms or none at all.

The rate of gonorrhea in males was more than double that of females. Men between the ages of 20 and 29 had the highest rate of infection, according to the county.

The majority of syphilis cases were reported in men, especially men who have sex with other men. Black men had the highest rate of infection, almost double that of white males, county health officials said.

"Young women between 15 and 24 years of age have the highest rate of chlamydia infections," said Dr. M. Winston Tilghman, senior physician and STD controller for the county. "Chlamydia and gonorrhea both can result in infertility and other long-term reproductive health issues, which make prevention particularly important in this age group."

Dr. Ilir Agalliu and colleagues at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York looked at the records of more than 96,000 people taking part in a big medical study.

They all took a mouthwash test for oral HPV infection as part of the study. Four years later, 132 of them had developed some form of head and neck cancer. The researchers compared each patient with cancer to three similar people who didn't get it.

People infected with a strain called HPV-16 were between two and 22 times as likely to be in the cancer group, the team reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association's JAMA Oncology.

Experts believe 70 percent of all head and neck cancers are caused by HPV, likely spread by oral sex. According to experts, by 2020 head and neck cancer will beat out cervical cancer as the most common HPV-related cancer.

Dr Agalliu explained what prompted this study. "We had previously detected an unusually high prevalence of HPV types found on the skin and in skin cancers in the oral cavity, in addition to HPV16 and other high-risk types," he told Medscape Medical News.

"Moreover, there have been no prospective studies examining associations between oral HPVs and the subsequent risk of head and neck cancers," he pointed out.

The detection of HPV DNA in oral rinse specimens was associated with a 7.1-fold increase in the odds of incident HNSCC (95% confidence interval [CI], 2.2 - 22.6), after adjustment for smoking history and alcohol consumption.

However, oral DNA detection of other high-risk oncogenic HPV types, excluding HPV16, was not associated with the risk for HNSCC.

-- From "Gonorrhea may soon be untreatable, Britain's chief medical officer warns" by Rachel Feltman, Washington Post 12/28/15

Sally Davies, Britain’s chief medical officer, has sounded the alarm on the spread of antibiotic resistant gonorrhea.

The sexually transmitted infection is increasingly caused by strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae that resist antibiotic treatment. “Gonorrhoea is at risk of becoming an untreatable disease due to the continuing emergence of antimicrobial resistance,” Davies wrote to doctors and pharmacies. The Guardian reports that a recent outbreak of a superbug strain of the disease – one that doesn’t respond to the antibiotic azithromycin – has put Britain on high alert.

Why does this happen? When researchers look for new antibiotics, they obviously look for ones that are incredibly effective against pathogenic bacteria. But as soon as these antibiotics are released for use by the public, they start to lose their effectiveness. Bacteria are fast-evolving creatures, and individual bacterium are skilled at sharing genes that allow them to survive particular antibiotics. Bacteria can even copy resistance genes from microbes of different strains and species through a process called horizontal gene transfer.

From "Gonorrhea May Soon Become Drug-Resistant, Untreatable: Rise Of 'Super Gonorrhea' In England" by Lecia Bushak, Medical Daily 12/28/15

In England, 16 cases of “super-gonorrhea” have been confirmed since March of this year, including an outbreak in Leeds, according to the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV. The strain is resistant to an antibiotic called azithromycin, which is typically used in collaboration with a drug called ceftriaxone. According to the CDC, “cephalosporin antibiotics have been the foundation of recommended treatment for gonorrhea,” and “the emergence of cephalosporin-resistant gonorrhea would significantly complicate the ability of providers to treat gonorrhea successfully, since we have few antibiotic options left that are simple, well-studied, well-tolerated, and highly effective.”

Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease that can be transmitted to anyone who is sexually active, generally infecting the genitals, throat, or rectum. Symptoms of the disease involve green or yellow discharge from genitals, as well as pain while urinating. Sometimes there are no symptoms, and a person may spread the disease to others without realizing it.

Typically, gonorrhea is treated with one or a combination of drugs, but once an antibiotic becomes more popular among patients, it loses its potency. Bacteria are constantly evolving and mutating, so it’s only a matter of time before certain strains develop resistance to common antibiotics.

The AG’s investigation focused on three facilities: Bedford Heights, Cincinnati and Columbus. DeWine launched the investigation to determine whether the facilities were selling fetal tissue, or abortion trafficking, in violation of Ohio law.

While the investigation did not find that fetal tissue was sold by any of the Planned Parenthood affiliates, the disposal methods used violate Ohio Administrative Code 3701-47-05, adopted in 1975, which requires that a “fetus shall be disposed of in a humane manner,” DeWine said.

According to his findings, all three affiliates sent fetal remains to companies which disposed of the fetuses in landfills.

Joe Schmansky, assistant attorney general for charitable law, said investigators found such a ["steam-cooking" pressure chamber] disposal system had been in place since at least January 2014, the earliest date of the records they studied.

"I think it will come as a shock to Ohioans to find out that fetuses are being cooked and then they're being put in a landfill and they're going to be mixed in with yesterday's garbage," DeWine said.

DeWine said his office, in conjunction with the Ohio Department of Health, would likely file court papers by Monday seeking an injunction for Planned Parenthood to dispose of fetal remains humanely. DeWine suggested "humane" disposal methods could include burial or cremation, though he said he didn't want to provide an exact definition.

A Planned Parenthood official defended the way her organization disposes of such remains and said DeWine's allegations were politically motivated.

State investigators found that Planned Parenthood affiliates in Columbus and Cincinnati contracted with Accu-Medical Waste Co., while a Bedford Heights clinic near Cleveland sent fetal remains to Stericyle, Inc. However, Stericyle officials said it was company policy not to accept fetal remains; DeWine said he did not know where those remains went.

Accu-Medical Waste confirmed to investigators that fetal remains and other biological waste are placed in auto-clave devices, which use high temperature and pressure to kill germs and infectious matter. The material is then taken to an unspecified landfill in Kentucky.

[Ohio Right to Life president Mike] Gonidakis said his organization is working with three Republican state lawmakers, Reps. Robert McColley of Napoleon and Kyle Koehler of Springfield, and Sen. Joe Uecker of Miami Township, make improper disposal a first-degree misdemeanor, add more oversight for humane burial and cremation, and require providers to inform women seeking an abortion about how the fetus would be disposed.
