Illinois Review offers an informative post detailing how you are (once again) involuntarily supporting the gay games with your tax money: The Illinois Lottery authorized a no-bid contract to Chicago Games, Inc. for the amount of $25,000.

Save Patrick Fitzgerald

Dennis Byrne has an excellent article supporting the re-appointment of US Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald. Culture Campaign doesn't endorse candidates of one party or another in an election, but can compliment Patrick Fitzgerald on fairly and consistently holding both major political parties accountable to law. Republicans and Democrats may hold divergent positions, but should be united in opposing corruption in state government.

Obama: Politicians need not abandon religion

Illinois' Junior Senator has a piece in USA Today entitled Politicians need not abandon religion, ostensibly composed to address the political divide between those who attend church regularly and those who do not.

His opening remark?

This gap has long been exploited by conservative leaders such as Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson, who tell evangelical Christians that Democrats disrespect their values and dislike their church, while suggesting that religious Americans care only about issues such as abortion and gay marriage.

Thus our senator reveals his ignorance about evangelical Christian leadership in the year 2006 - or perhaps it is disdain that he reveals by mentioning these two rather than James Dobson, Don Wildmon, Albert Mohler, James McArthur, Ken Hutchinson, Franklin Graham, Chuck Colson, etc., with whom he surely has become acquainted.

(Notice that Obama omits mention of the Democrats' prominent associations with Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton and even Louis Farrakhan, as though his side never associates with religion...I suppose those names might detract from his oratory.)

Some interesting statistics cited by Obama:

• 90% of Americans believe in God
• 70% affiliate ourselves with an organized religion
• 38% call ourselves committed Christians

But his sole observation about those numbers is that Democrats cannot "abandon the field of religious discourse."

My own observation: There is a tremendous difference in the values of a man who "believes in God" and a man who calls himself a "committed Christian." We are warned in Romans 1 and in II Timothy 3 about "having a form of godliness, but denying its power." The man who recognizes the power and authority of an omnipotent divine Creator will order his life - and his political idealogy - quite differently than the one who thinks there is a God, but isn't really concerned about meeting Him face to face. Believing in God is merely sane; affiliating with a local congregation may assuage the conscience or keep family peace. But a committed Christian is born when a man recognizes his sin and his debt of gratitude to Jesus Christ for paying the debt, for providing a means of reconciliation and escape from hell to eternal life, and when he determines to live a fruitful and productive life of service. The latter will not be satisfied with the superficial rhetoric suitable for the former.

When Alan Keyes claimed that "Jesus Christ would not vote for Barack Obama," Obama responded that he could not impose his religious views on others. Now he says that response was not complete. I suggest that Obama's response not only incomplete, but also just not true...for Obama and those who share his values (both Republicans and Democrats) are already working hard to impose their religious views on the nation. It's not as if he actually believes in the sanctity of human life or in marriage as ordained by God, just the same as we do, and that he doesn't want to impose those values on everyone. No, Obama has a completely different religious faith: one that values abortion "rights" and a "right" to die, one that preaches tolerance (or more plainly, warm embrace) of homosexuality/ bisexuality/ transgender confusion. It's a religion that promotes radical feminism, prefers a socialistic welfare order, has compassion for the criminal rather than for the victim, and can't distinguish between the evil of Al Quaeda/radical Islam and the purported evil of the George Bush administration. And he's busy trying to codify that morality into national law.

The problem isn't the lack of religion, it's the lack of genuine Christianity.

Obama characterizes conservative Christians as:

...those with the most insular views of faith, or those who cynically use religion to justify partisan ends.

He goes on to coach conservatives to make arguments not only from a religious perspective, lamenting in a patronizing tone that "This might be difficult for those who believe in the inerrancy of the Bible, but in a pluralistic democracy, we have no choice. " Does he forget sitting through Jill Stanek's testimony three different times, while she tried to reason with him that babies born alive following attempted abortion should not be tossed in a garbage pile to die? Although she could have relied on a Biblical argument to support her position, I'm confident that Jill presented a reasoned argument "accessible to people of all faiths" as well - which he ignored.

So what is Obama really up to with this speech?

Consider Romans 16:17- - "I urge you brothers to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them. For such people are not serving our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people...Be wise about what is good and innocent about what is evil."

Don't be deceived: In whatever "spiritual" or "religious" terms that Senator Obama may find, many of his political positions are and will remain unacceptable to Christians - because Obama did get one thing right: Real Christianity does not allow for compromise on matters of principle.

Recommended Action: Contact Senator Obama with your reaction to his statement.

Governor Mitt Romney VETOED all five budget items that related to promoting homosexuality in Massachusetts - most notably, Section 4, which created a Permanent Commission for Gay and Lesbian Youth, not subject to the control of any other department or agency.

Massachusetts Homosexuals in Quite a Pickle

Here's a twist that nobody predicted...

Employees of the Boston Newspaper Guild - home of the very liberal Boston Globe - received a memo informing them that health/dental benefits for homosexual partners is being discontinued.

“An employee who currently covers a same-sex domestic partner as a dependent will have to marry his or her partner by Jan. 1 for the employee benefits coverage to continue at the employee rates,” the memo states.

The Globe and other Massachusetts companies found themselves in a pickle...

• They don't offer "domestic partnership benefits" to unmarried heterosexuals, but offered them to unmarried homosexuals because they could not marry. Now that they can, it's hard to defend offering them to unmarried homosexuals...
• Yet it seems quite bizarre to demand that any couple get married, and to set a deadline...
• It's unclear how the Globe will handle situations where the homosexual employee resides in Massachusetts, but the currently covered partner resides outside Massachusetts (and thus cannot legally marry, even in Massachusetts)...
• The Globe will continue to offer "domestic partnership benefits" to unmarried homosexual employees who reside in other states where homosexual marriage is not legal...so an unmarried homosexual couple could decline to marry, but transfer to a position in another state and again be covered.

A few descriptive terms come to mind: inconsistent, illogical, inane, immoral.

Protecting Abortionists, Outing Christians

California assembly member Noreen Evans (D-Santa Rosa) introduced AB 2251, a bill that would prohibit the online posting of addresses, telephone numbers, and pictures of reproductive clinic doctors and patients. The bill passed the Senate Judiciary Committee and now awaits a vote on the Senate floor.

"Web sites are used by militant anti-abortion activists to publicize personal information about reproductive healthcare service providers and patients in order to threaten or incite violence against them," said Evans in a statement.

Meanwhile, the same folks who will vote with her to protect the identity, address, telephone number of abortionists will fully support Know Thy Neighbor, a pro-homosexual website that is posting the names and addresses of all who signed Protect Marriage petitions in Massachusetts and Florida (and I predict soon: Illinois - look for my name, it's there)...under the guise of "promoting open & meaningful conversations." But the real intent is evident on their blog and in personal stories that are posted:

John writes,

I would not have gotten so mad or have been so active if it had not been for the Morans at 415 Lafayette St. I live right down the street and was beside myself when I found out two of the origional signers of the petition were my own neighbors.

Lisa writes,

As I read the names I started to shake and feel physically sick: I have known Kathy and Wally Weld all of my life ...our families have been friends literally for generations - I am horrified by what they have done. ...they witnessed (from across the harbor) the wedding of my partner and I there two years ago and must know that we were legally married last year. I was just at a party at their house on July 4th - I could go on and on.
Once I collect my thoughts (and after I finish venting my emotions) I will write to them about their signatures. ...Also, I know that there are two gay people (not a couple) living NEXT DOOR!! to them on Cape Cod - I will be contacting them as well.

First, notice that neither of these authors outed themselves complete with their street address...but they sure felt it was fair to do just that to their unsuspecting neighbors.

Second, don't all the signers share the same freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of association that these homosexuals enjoy? Why should anyone care that someone's signature on a petition makes someone else mad or hurts their feelings? (Do these homosexuals realize that their behavior makes some people mad, too? I'm sure they do, but they don't seem to feel compelled to make any accommodation.)

Third, isn't it reasonable to suspect that most homosexuals (or adulterers or other active, unrepentant sinners) do, in fact, already know that some of their own family, so-called friends, and neighbors oppose homosexual marriage - even if they choose to act kindly (which they certainly ought to do)?

Fourth, what business is it of Lisa's to sit around thinking about who she might tattle to, how she might cause her so-called lifelong friends some grief and stir up opposition against them?

Quoting Chuck Colson:

Know Thy Neighbor leader Gary DeBusk revealed the group’s true agenda when he told the Globe: “We’re trying to say you cannot just take away people’s rights without being held accountable for that.”

No one is taking away people's rights - except Gary DeBusk. And who appointed him to hold petition signers accountable?

It seems clear that the purpose of posting names is to intimidate and even harrass those who support traditional marriage and family. If it's not okay to post the names and addresses of abortionists, it's not okay to do what Know Thy Neighbor is doing.

The Wisdom of Howard Dean

...Today's decision by the New York Court of Appeals, which relies on outdated and bigoted notions about families, is deeply disappointing...

The God who created a helper (Eve) suitable for Adam, who blessed their union and instructed them to "be fruitful and increase in number" might be interested in hearing more from Howard Dean on how divinely ordained marriage is an outdated and bigoted notion.

Then again, He might not.

Good News from NY to GA!!!

A rare and God-honoring day in America's judicial system:

In NY - "We hold that the New York Constitution does not compel recognition of marriages between members of the same sex."

IN GA - "In a unanimous decision authored by Justice Robert Benham, the Supreme Court has reversed a Fulton County Superior Court judge in Perdue v. O’Kelley et al., S06A1574," reinstating the state's ban on homosexual "marriage" which was implemented after 75% of Georgia voters said no to same sex unions.

Our Mother Jesus???

...Just hours after its newly elected woman head preached a sermon in praise of
“our mother Jesus”, the Episcopal Church agreed to “exercise restraint” in
appointing any more gay bishops after a tense day of debate and argument...

You may have read that the Episcopal church has offered up new ways to understand the Trinity - among them, Mother, Child, Womb. (Personally, I prefer the cartoonist who suggested Paper, Rock, Scissors.)

Who better understands the character of Jesus than God the Father, than Jesus Himself? How is He described in the God-breathed scriptures?

He repeatedly acknowledges himself the Son, the Son of David, the Son of Man. He is described as propitiation, mediator, prophet, high priest, savior, brother, etc. - never as feminine, never as mother.

This is nothing short of blasphemy, of spiritual arrogance. It is an attempt to impute a feminine character to a masculine deity, to redefine the very nature of God, to emasculate Jesus Christ. If the infinitely wise Creator of the universe desired to convey knowledge of His alleged feminine nature to mankind, He is more than able to do so. Instead He chose to characterize Himself as Father and Jesus as Son. No man - much less no woman - has greater knowledge than God Himself to "enlighten" us otherwise.

Consider the warning of the apostle Paul in Galatians 1: "If we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed."

Real Nazis

While Americans celebrated Independence Day,

German neo-Nazis tore up and burned a copy of The Diary of Anne Frank after hijacking a traditional gala...
The book-burning, which has chilling parallels to the 1930s when Nazi supporters made pyres of books written by Jews, follows a string of high-profile attacks by racist gangs on blacks.
The neo-Nazis descended on a field in the village of Pretzien, Saxony, where local people were re-enacting a pagan rite celebrating midsummer. A bonfire was lit and the book and flag destroyed. Before they burned the book, the extremists used it as a football in a drunken kick-around...

I draw your attention to this article because so many District 214 teachers, parents, and students saw fit to draw a comparison between Hitler/Nazis and today's conservative Christian community. The analogy is not only egregiously offensive, but is just dead wrong - and it demonstrates a void of appreciation for the utterly evil motives of Hitler and other Nazi leaders, an ignorance of the violence and suffering they perpetrated on millions.

Consider this recent episode. What kind of person tears up and burns a book written by a little girl who spent three years of her short life in an attic, who was betrayed into the hands of murderers, who died in a concentration camp? Who cheers and chants over that? Think about the heart of such a man - the venom, the sheer idiocy. That is the kind of person to which we Christians were likened; those are the motives that were imputed!

Did you see Leslie Pinney and all her supporters kicking and destroying and burning books? Did they chant and dance? Do they hate - literally desire the deaths of - the authors?

Such an insulting comparison demands only disrespect for the one who draws it...especially where that person purports to teach school children.

The State of Religious Freedom

Chuck Colson writes:

In New York last month, the owners of a private skating rink were warned by the state's Division of Human Rights to stop holding a Christian skating event on Sundays. It allegedly discriminated against non-Christians.

In Iowa, as part of his ruling against Prison Fellowship and the InnerChange Freedom Initiative, a federal judged grossly mischaracterized the orthodox beliefs of evangelicals (such as the bodily resurrection of Jesus). He said these beliefs are hostile to "many Christians." Then he ordered the InnerChange program in Iowa shut down.

And in Boston, Catholic Charities was recently forced out of the adoption business because it would not, for doctrinal reasons, agree to place children with homosexuals.

Add to these: A Massachusetts father jailed for trespassing after opposing pro-homosexual teaching in his son's 2nd grade classroom. Illinois pharmacists fired after the governor's edict that they must fill prescriptions for abortifacients, despite right of conscience laws. A Christian business in Virginia fined for refusing to duplicate pro-homosexual materials. And on and on...

There is no question that our religious freedoms are being redefined and narrowed. On this day when we normally celebrate, perhaps we should fast and pray instead, before it is too late.

New Series: Letters to the Editor

In today's Daily Herald, Magge Moriarty of Wheaton writes:

I would like to make a comment on the topic of gay marriage.

We cannot legally be forced to marry anyone, so why can we be legally forced not to?

If being gay is wrong in the eyes of the church, then what about Jesus not judging?

Whatever happened to having your own life and decisions? If someone is in love, let him or her be. If you don’t approve, keep it to yourself.

This is very similar to interracial dating, which is now very accepted. With time people won’t care. If it isn’t your life, you shouldn’t care anyway.

I fear Ms. Moriarty attended public school in IL and there learned what she believes to be critical thinking. Let's dissect her argument to see if it has any merit at all...and perhaps help her and others understand the true answers to her queries.

Should we be legally forced not to marry certain people? In fact, we already are. You can't marry your father or mother, brother or your sister, etc. Incest is illegal. You can't marry your 9 yr old nephew or your 11 yr old neighbor girl. State law sets a minimum age for marriage. You can't marry your dog or your cow. Bestiality is illegal. And you can't marry three men or three women. Polygamy is illegal. And at least for now, a man cannot marry another man, a woman cannot marry another woman, because the very definition of the word "marry" is to join a man and a woman.

What about Jesus not judging? This is the argument of a person who has never flipped open her Bible. Let's start in Matthew and see how many pages I have to turn to find Jesus judging...

• 3rd page (following his birth and childhood) - 4:17 - Jesus began to preach, saying, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Apparently Jesus found something objectionable and began to preach the need to turn away from doing evil.
• 4th page - Jesus pronounces judgment not only on murderers and adulterers, but on one who is angry, who insults, or calls another a fool; on one who lusts in his heart or divorces for any cause other than infidelity; one one who takes an oath.
• 5th page - Jesus pronounces judgment on one who exacts vengeance, or lacks compassion or generosity, or loves only his own family, or seeks his own glory, or prays with empty words, or who doesn't forgive, or who treasures earthly wealth.

Starting to get it? Jesus did not teach that He would not judge or that we should not judge at all, but rather that we should make a righteous judgment.

To be even more clear, Jesus said (in Matthew 15) that the things that proceed from our hearts - murder, adultery, sexual immorality (a word that encompasses sex before marriage, homosexuality, etc.), theft, false witness, and slander - defile us. Jesus made that judgment and so it would be irresponsible for Christians/the church to omit that teaching today. Our message is not that we judge, but that God will judge all sin, including homosexuality.

If someone is in love, let him or her be. Sounds good, but is it right? If your best friend was involved with an abusive man, would you just let her be in love? If your 6th grade son was in love and sexually active with his teacher, would that be okay? If your adult daughter falls in love with a married man who has three little children and a pregnant wife, would that not merit judgment? If your husband falls in love with his business colleague, would you just let that go? No, no, no, no - you wouldn't, because these behaviors are destructive - to the people involved, to families, to businesses, to society. And so is homosexuality.

If you don't approve, keep it to yourself. Interesting...Ms Moriarity doesn't approve of the Christian position, and rather than keeping it to herself, she wrote a letter to the editor. So she and all the homosexual activists can speak, but Christians cannot?

If it isn't your life, you shouldn't care anyway. That's not true even among secular folks - who care how many pets someone has, who pass laws about yard upkeep and garbage disposal, who pull children out of abusive homes, who enforce drunk driving laws, who intervene in human rights violations in other countries, etc. Of course it matters how another person lives his life - because it impacts, in message and in behavior, the entire community and nation.

I'd love to hear more from Ms Moriarity after she gives this some real critical thought - and after she reads the gospel of Matthew.

A Good Soldier

On Memorial Day weekend, the son of a friend was injured in Iraq. He was driving an up-armored Humvee when an IED was detonated. The explosive ripped through the reinforced door and into the young man's thigh and out his backside. Despite his horrific injury, with pain so severe that he was certain he was dying, he managed to keep driving ahead, carrying his fellow soldiers to safety. And despite their own fear, they sprang to action to care for him and to exact swift justice on his Syrian terrorist attacker. Such is the duty, the courage, the focus, and the determination of a good soldier...

I read II Timothy today and was struck by its theme: "...do not be ashamed...but share in the suffering for the gospel...share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus."

Paul inspires the young evangelist Timothy to be like a soldier with one single aim, like an athlete who competes according to the rules, like a farmer who earns a first share of the crops, like a worker who can be confident of approval, like a vessel useful for honorable purposes. God does not bless a cowardly soldier or an undisciplined athlete or a lazy farmer - and, likewise, God does not approve of unproductive, ineffective, fruitless Christians.

While we celebrate this fourth of July weekend, giving thanks for those who paid the price for our constitutional liberties, perhaps we also have a good opportunity to reflect on the freedom we find in Jesus Christ...and to evaluate whether our level of service is an appropriately grateful response.

Paul urged Timothy to "fan into flame the gift of God," "do the work," "fulfill your ministry." You know, work involves suffering. Are you working? Are you tired and sweaty, maybe even a little bloody? Are you sharing in the suffering like a good soldier? If not, it's time to make it personal.

Condoms Fail to Prevent HPV, Cancer

The news reports gush with excitement: For the first time, scientists have proof that condoms offer women protection against the virus that causes cervical cancer. This virus is the human papillomavirus, or HPV.

What kind of proof about condoms and HPV does this study offer?

Well the three-year study of 82 college women found that those whose partners used condoms 100 percent of the time were 70 percent less likely to become infected.

In fact the study reports that 12 out of 42 women whose partners always used condoms did get HPV. Thus, 28.5 percent of the women got HPV even with 100 percent condom use.

Why isn’t the fact that condoms, even under ideal usage conditions, failed 28.5 percent of the time the real story here? Who would consider this an acceptable failure rate when dealing with a cancer-causing virus?

For those who are still impressed by the "70 percent less" infection rate, remember that with only 82 women, the sample size is so small that the results have very little statistical significance.

If this study is proof of anything, it is proof that condoms do not provide satisfactory protection against HPV. That was the position taken by supporters of the abstinence-only approach in the first place. This study certainly does not challenge their position.

New Witch School in IL: "An Experiment in Religious Tolerance"

Starting Saturday, in the unlikeliest of places, a real witch school opens its doors to the public ...

After almost five years of existence on the Internet, Witch School is expected to operate under normal business hours in the town of Hoopeston, Ill., about 100 miles south of Chicago.

The school has roughly 120,000 active students who enroll in Witch School's Internet courses... Students then take at least one test a month to stay active and can eventually become an accredited member of the clergy.

"We're really getting to be a functional community," Hubbard said of the increasing presence of Witch School online.

Hoopeston is also the home of a Wiccan/pagan-owned bookstore, Beads and Botanicals.

What is a Christian to think of this?

God says "Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them." (Lev 19:31)

Deut 18:9- directs, "...Do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations...Let no one be found who...practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist, or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD..."

These portions of moral law are repeated in the NT: "The acts of the sinful nature are obvious:...witchcraft...Those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God." (Gal 5:20)

We have become so sophisticated (in our own judgment) that we think we can play around with witchcraft or astrology, that we can put a New Age label, like Wicca, on it and participate in it as a curiosity and laugh it off. But God says it is detestable, it will defile you, it will exclude you from your inheritance. It's no joke.

Therefore, I was pleased to read that Pastor Steve Nelson of Hoopeston's First Baptist Church understands the importance of praying and of using all his civic freedoms to speak out against the school. Would that there were more like him.

Christian High School Sued for Expelling Lesbians?

A private Lutheran school expelled two girls, high school juniors, for violating the code of conduct when - according to an article in the San Francisco Chronicle - the school principal learned that the two were engaging in a lesbian relationship.

The girls (or their parents) have filed suit against the school, claiming they violated the Unruh Act, which prohibits businesses from discriminating on the basis of a person's actual or perceived sexuality (similar to the recent Illinois law). Now - in spite of constitutionally protected freedom of religion and freedom of association - both a California appeals court and the California Supreme Court has agreed that the girls may have a valid suit. So the school will at least face thousands of dollars in legal fees and at worst be directed to accept homosexual students or staff.

Look out - if it can happen in California, it can happen in Illinois.

Comprehensive Sex Ed

Re: Comprehensive Sex Education

Based on a report that 50% of Chicago high school students are sexually active, you do have a valid concern. Is “comprehensive sex education” an effective response?

I predict that with “comprehensive sex education” in place you will soon find that 75% of Chicago high school students are sexually active. What will you do then?

After sacrificing more of your students to the false concept of “safe sex” as pushed by Planned Parenthood, will you admit that the real solution is abstinence education?

Why not get serious about abstinence education now so you can avoid sacrificing more of your students to premature sexual activity, teen pregnancy, abortion, and psychological damage for life?

“Comprehensive sex education” does not measure up to the claims made for it by Planned Parenthood, the Illinois Caucus for Adolescent Health, and SIECUS. A serious review of their materials described as “comprehensive sex education” reveals that abstinence is not a serious component. The mention of abstinence is so frivolous that it serves only to support the false claim that “teaching a strong abstinence message” is included. Teens recognize immediately that abstinence is minimized as unrealistic.

In fact the entire focus is teaching that sexual activity is always OK as long as it is consensual and “safe.” The primary step suggested to practice “safe sex” is “always use a condom.” This approach is guaranteed to encourage more sexual activity, more teen pregnancies, and more abortions.

Teenagers educated in “safe sex” will need birth control supplies, pregnancy testing, STD testing and treatment, emergency contraception, and abortion. These are the exact services that Planned Parenthood sells. What interest would they have in “teaching a strong abstinence message” that makes these services totally unnecessary? Any teenager who accepts abstinence will not become a customer of Planned Parenthood.

“Comprehensive sex education” has a negative impact on the lives of young people. It encourages teens to disrespect their parents, become sexually active, use birth control products that threaten their health, and get abortions when they become pregnant anyway. This completes the cycle of destruction that destroys young lives and devastates their families.

The evidence that “comprehensive sex education” fails is readily available. I have provided copies of and/or links to such evidence below.

Reverse course now before it is too late. Cancel the plan to use “comprehensive sex education” in the Chicago Public Schools. The only reliable solution to reduce sexual activity among Chicago high school students is teaching a true abstinence message.
