More Rare Disease Rampant Among Homosexual Men

Health officials in locales where homosexual men concentrate are perplexed by recent outbreaks of invasive meningococcal disease, which kills one in ten of those infected.
“Certainly my patients have shown concern that something is running through the [homosexual] community like wildfire.”

-- From "Meningitis outbreaks among gay men have experts puzzled" by Soumya Karlamangla, Los Angeles Times 7/30/16

There’s no known medical reason why meningitis, which is transmitted through saliva, would spread more among gay and bisexual men. Yet New York, Chicago and now Southern California have experienced outbreaks disproportionately affecting that population.

Gladstein, who is also an HIV specialist, said he thinks that the cases are likely among men who have multiple sexual partners, engage in anonymous sex and use drugs that make them more susceptible.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the New York City Department of Public Health launched a project to investigate the connection between gay men and meningitis. It’s possible that L.A. County will be included in the study as well, officials said.

The research may also consider whether meningitis can be transmitted in other ways, such as sexual routes that might be making gay men more susceptible, [medical epidemiologist at L.A. County’s Department of Public Health, Dr. Rachel] Civen said. The bacteria Neisseria meningitidis that leads to meningitis is known to colonize the throat and mouth, but researchers will investigate whether it can also colonize other parts of the body, such as the genitals or anus.

From "Health experts unsure why gay, bisexual men at risk for meningitis" by Rebecca Plevin, KPCC-FM89.3 NPR (National Public Radio, Pasadena, CA) 7/7/16

Meningitis is spread through close contact with an infected person. People can contract it through kissing, coughing or sneezing, or sharing cigarettes or drugs. It also spreads among people in group settings – like dorms, jails or shelters.

Symptoms of meningitis usually occur within five days. They include high fever, stiff neck, skin rash, severe headache, low blood pressure, sensitivity to bright lights and generalized muscle pains. The infection can cause brain damage, hearing loss and death. It progresses quickly, so immediate diagnosis and treatment is imperative, health experts say.

From "Long Beach Officials Increase Push for Meningitis Vaccinations in Light of Outbreak" by Keeley Smith, Long Beach Post 7/27/16

Los Angeles County and Orange County health officials urged all gay and bisexual men in the county to obtain vaccines today, regardless of their risk status, as the spread of meningitis has officially been labeled an outbreak by the state.

A spike in the number of new meningitis cases in May and June heightened the alarm among officials, hearkening back to the most recent outbreak of meningococcal disease, which occurred in 2014. However, the term "outbreak," as defined by the CDC, means the diagnosis of three or more cases over the course of three months, which is not necessarily a cause for panic, said The LGBTQ Center of Long Beach's Director of Health and Wellness Ismael Salamanca.

Government Predicts Black Men Will Get Gay Disease

In a first-of-its-kind analysis, President Obama's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported this week that African-American males who engage in anal sex have a 50-50 chance of contracting HIV during their lifetime.  The risk for Latino men is 25%.
“It’s really important to say that these [projections] are not inevitable.  This is a call to do things differently.”

The report, released at the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections in Boston, is the first to take a look at any given person's lifetime risk of becoming infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that causes AIDS.

"At current rates, 1 in 2 African American men who have sex with men (MSM) and 1 in 4 Hispanic MSM will be diagnosed with HIV in their lifetime, compared with 1 in 11 white MSM," CDC said.

The CDC has been warning for years that people most at risk of HIV are not getting tested for it nearly often enough. . . .

The findings present a stark reminder of the threat still posed by the AIDS virus 35 years after the illness was first detected, despite progress in treatment and prevention.

“It was really a clarion call,” said Dawn Fukuda, director of the HIV/AIDS division at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, who heard the report presented at the international Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections in Boston. “These are numbers that are pretty astounding.”

The report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is the first to project the lifetime risk of HIV infection state-by-state and among certain groups of people. Based on death data from 2009 through 2013, the CDC concluded that gay and bisexual men, African-Americans, and people who live in the South have the highest risk of infection.

The recommendations were published Tuesday in Vital Signs, a monthly report from the CDC. Based on national data, the CDC estimates that 25 percent of sexually active gay and bisexual men, nearly 20 percent of adult intravenous drug users and less than 1 percent of sexually active heterosexuals should be counseled on the use of PrEP. These numbers are based on lifestyle factors that put a person at higher risk for an HIV infection such as engaging in unprotected sex with multiple partners. The daily pill for HIV prevention that has been found to reduce the risk for infection by more than 90 percent for men who have sex with men and by more than 70 percent among patients who inject drugs.

PrEP was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2012 for high-risk patients, but the CDC reports that many primary care physicians are unaware of the drug and its high efficacy for HIV prevention. An unpublished online national survey of health care providers, conducted in 2015 found 34 percent had not heard of PrEP.

New Gay Health Risk: Meningococcal Disease

-- From "STD rates increasing in US" by The Associated Press 11/17/15

Reported cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis all increased in 2014. Chlamydia cases had dipped in 2013, but last year's total of more than 1.4 million — or 456 cases per 100,000 — was the highest number of annual cases of any condition ever reported to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The chlamydia rate was up almost 3 percent from 2013, the CDC reported Tuesday.

Gonorrhea cases totaled 350,062, up 5 percent from 2013, and the most contagious forms of syphilis jumped 15 percent to 20,000. As in previous years, the syphilis increase was mainly in gay and bisexual men.

Most gonorrhea and chlamydia infections were in 15- to 24-year-olds, an ongoing trend. Both can cause infertility in women but can be treated with antibiotics. They often have no symptoms, and while yearly screening is recommended for sexually active women younger than 25, many don't get tested and infections go untreated, the CDC said.

From "CDC: 'Alarming' increase in STDs" by Mary Bowerman, USA TODAY Network 11/18/15

“While rates have increased among both men and women, men account for more than 90 percent of all primary and secondary syphilis cases,” according to the [CDC] report.

Gay and bisexual men are most at risk for syphilis infections, according to the report. Men who reported that they had sex with other men accounted for 83% of male cases where the partner’s sex was reported.

From "Rates Of Syphillis, Chlamydia And Gonorrhea Rising For First Time Since 2006, Particularly Among Young People" by Ed Cara, Medical Daily 11/17/15

Syphilis, however, remains primarily a problem among men who have sex with men (MSM), encompassing 83 percent of reported cases (when the sex of the partner is known). Fifty percent of MSM syphilis cases were also HIV-positive, highlighting a known but nonetheless frightening connection between the two STDs. It’s believed the sores commonly seen in syphilis make it easier for the HIV virus to be transmitted between partners.

“A number of individual risk behaviors (such as higher numbers of lifetime sex partners), as well as environmental, social and cultural factors (such as higher prevalence of STDs or difficulty accessing quality health care) contribute to disparities in the sexual health of gay and bisexual men,” explained the CDC’s summary of their report. . . .

It wasn’t solely age, gender, and sexual orientation that predicted greater STD rates, but race as well. In particular, STD rates were highest in blacks across the board, though few minority groups fared better than whites, save Asians.

From "Syphilis, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia Rates Rising: CDC" by Steven Reinberg, HealthDay Reporter (posted at WebMD) 11/17/15

"In the previous years, we have had some declines in some diseases and increases in others. But, we are concerned about the alarming increases we are seeing in chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis," said lead researcher Dr. Gail Bolan, director of the CDC's Division of STD Prevention.

"We are concerned that most of the surging rates are among men," Bolan said. "Men are driving these increases. There is an urgent need to tackle the increases we are seeing."

There is also evidence that gay and bisexual men are seeing similar increases in gonorrhea and chlamydia, she said.

Despite that, young people are still the most disproportionately affected by STDs, Bolan added. Last year, those between the ages of 15 and 24 accounted for nearly two-thirds of the reported cases of chlamydia and gonorrhea. That compares to previous estimates that young people get half of the estimated 20 million new STDs diagnosed each year in the United States, she pointed out.

From "New STD? What You Should Know About Mycoplasma Genitalium" by Rachael Rettner, Senior Writer, LiveScience 11/17/15

The study found that the bacterium Mycoplasma genitalium, which is thought to be sexually transmitted, infects more than 1 percent of people ages 16 to 44 in the United Kingdom. That comes out to about 250,000 people, according to U.K. census data. Studies in the United States have found that a similar percentage of people here are infected with M. genitalium.

That makes M. genitalium a more common sexually transmitted disease (STD) than gonorrhea, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The new study adds to the evidence that M. genitalium is an STD, because it found that the infection was more common in people who had at least four new sexual partners in the past year than in people who had one or fewer new partners in the past year. In addition, people were more likely to have M. genitalium if they had unprotected sex, and no infections were found in people who had never had sex, according to the study, which was published Nov. 3 in the International Journal of Epidemiology.

The new study in the International Journal of Epidemiology found that about 94 percent of men and 56 percent of women infected with M. genitalium did not have symptoms.

Pill = Breast Cancer; Vasectomy = Prostate Cancer

The latest study shows that certain birth control pills are linked to an increased risk of breast cancer, and a separate study shows an increased risk of aggressive prostate cancer in men who have had a vasectomy.

A new study out of Seattle suggests that the birth control pill could be linked to an increased risk for breast cancer. Scientists from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and their colleagues have found evidence that women who recently used birth control containing high-dose estrogen showed an increased risk for breast cancer.

The breast cancer data, published today in Cancer Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research, concludes that recent oral contraceptive use increased breast cancer risk by 50 percent, compared with never or former use. The results suggested that this risk may vary by the level of estrogen in the pill and other pill formulations. Women who took low-dose estrogen birth control within the past year were not found to be at a higher breast cancer risk.

From "Vasectomy linked to aggressive prostate cancer" by Robert Preidt, HealthDay/CBS News 7/11/14

For the study, Harvard researchers analyzed data from more than 49,400 American men who were followed for 24 years, starting in 1986. During that time, 6,023 cases of prostate cancer were diagnosed among the men, including 811 fatal cases.

The 25 percent of the men in the study who'd had a vasectomy had a 10 percent increased risk of developing prostate cancer, according to the study published online July 7 in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

Vasectomy was not linked with an increased risk of low-grade prostate cancer. But it was associated with a 20 percent higher risk of advanced prostate cancer and a 19 percent greater risk of fatal prostate cancer, respectively, the study authors said.

Even among men who had regular prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening tests for prostate cancer, those who had a vasectomy were 56 percent more likely to develop fatal prostate cancer. This link was strongest among men who had a vasectomy at a younger age.

From "Recent use of some oral contraceptives increases breast cancer risk" by Honor Whiteman, Medical News Today 8/1/14

Numerous studies have suggested that birth control pills increase the risk of breast cancer. Now, a new study suggests that this increased risk may only apply to recent users and is dependent on the formulation of the pill.

The research team, including Elisabeth F. Beaber of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, WA, recently published their findings in the journal Cancer Research.

In this latest study, the team set out to see whether increased breast cancer risk could be attributed to certain types of man-made female hormones.

"Oral contraceptive formulations have changed over time in the US, and contemporary formulations have received relatively less scrutiny with respect to breast cancer risk," Beaber told us.

From "Some birth control pills linked to higher breast cancer risk in study" by Agata Blaszczak-Boxe, CBS News 8/1/14

In the study, the researchers concluded that the potential increase in the risk for breast cancer varied, depending on the types of birth control pills that the women used. The use of high-dose estrogen pills was related to a 2.7-fold increase in breast cancer risk, and the use of moderate-dose estrogen was linked to a 1.6-fold increase. Pills containing ethynodiol diacetate were related to a 2.6-fold higher risk. Triphasic combination pills containing an average of 0.75 milligrams of norethindrone increased the risk 3.1-fold.

"Our results suggest that use of contemporary oral contraceptives [birth control pills] in the past year is associated with an increased breast cancer risk relative to never or former oral contraceptive use, and that this risk may vary by oral contraceptive formulation," study author Elisabeth F. Beaber, a staff scientist in the Public Health Sciences Division of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington, said in a statement.

In the study, researchers examined health records and oral contraceptive use in 1,102 women ages 20 to 49 years diagnosed with breast cancer and 21,952 women without breast cancer in the same age group. . . .

Obama Replaces Fathers with Government Mentors

Although President Obama serves as a personal model of the responsible father in a stable marriage and family, his government policies have exacerbated the liberal ideals of the past half-century.  While the president announces yet another government effort today to make up for the liberals' destruction of the family, especially of minority populations, he champions every anti-family policy imaginable.

UPDATE 5/16/15: Public Boarding Schools Proposed by Obama Administration

-- From "Obama urges national commitment to help boys of color" by Tom Cohen, CNN 5/30/14

It is a stark and sobering fact of American life in the 21st century -- black, Hispanic and Native American boys and young men are less likely to graduate, stay out of jail and get a job than those who are white.

Chances are greater they'll grow up with a single parent or none at all, won't read well, and will get suspended or expelled from school or just drop out.

Saddest of all, such statistics aren't new or particularly shocking in a society that has come to expect such class, racial and ethnic disparities.

President Barack Obama launched his "My Brother's Keeper" initiative three months ago to focus on solutions to such chronic and deep-rooted social ills. The initiative included a task force to examine the issue, and an invitation for businesses and foundations to help out.

From "Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper initiative takes crucial next step" by Trymaine Lee, MSNBC 5/30/14

During an emotional speech at the White House, delivered before a backdrop of young black and Latino men from Obama’s hometown of Chicago, the president implored Americans of all colors to shake their complacency over the dire outcomes of minority men and help provide them pathways to success.

This morning, the task force released its first report to the president, in which they outline a broad set of guiding principles and recommendations. The recommendations include launching a national mentor-recruiting campaign, eliminating suspensions and expulsions of preschoolers, encouraging a culture of reading at home and growing youth summer programs and pre-apprenticeships.

The initiative calls on filling the gaps for young men of color at critical times in their lives, including early education, when these boys often fall behind in literacy and math. The task force recommends universal access to high-quality early childhood care and education, saying, “pre-school for all is a vital component to the administration’s so-called ‘opportunity agenda.’” And later, as students prepare to graduate from high school, that students are college-ready. But even further, the task force suggests helping these young people through college with stronger college counselors and, after graduation, expanded access to mentorship programs and internships. It’s what the task force describes as a “cradle-to-college-and-career approach.” (emphasis added)

From "Opportunity for All: My Brother’s Keeper Blueprint for Action" by Office of the Press Secretary, The White House 5/30/14

. . . Boys of color are too often born into poverty and live with a single parent. . . . Too many of these boys and young men will have negative interactions with the juvenile and criminal justice system, and the dream of a college education is within grasp for too few.

. . . Today, the President met with his Cabinet to discuss the Task Force’s initial assessments and recommendations and the President called on the American people to get engaged through mentorship opportunities nationwide.

It is important that all children have caring adults who are engaged in their lives.  But too many young people lack this support.  For example, roughly two-thirds of Black and one-third of Hispanic children live with only one parent.   Moreover, research suggests that a father's absence increases the risk of his child dropping out of school among Blacks and Hispanics by 75 percent and 96 percent respectively.  We see significant high school dropout rates—as high as 50 percent in some school districts—including among boys and young men from certain Southeast Asian and Pacific Islander populations. And some 27 percent of American Indians and Alaska Natives live in poverty, compared to 11.6% of White Americans.

The President is calling on Americans interested in getting involved in My Brother’s Keeper to sign up as long-term mentors to young people . . .

Women Who Give Birth Live Longer and Healthier

A study involving Danish couples found a correlation between childless couples dying earlier than couples with children, researchers said.

. . . the early death rate from circulatory disease, cancers and accidents among childless women was four times as high as that among those who gave birth to their own child, and 50 percent lower among women who adopted. The study also found the early death rate in men was halved if they had children.

"Mindful that association is not the same thing as causation, our results suggest that the mortality rates are higher in the childless," the researchers wrote in the study.

. . . After examining data on more than 21,276 Danish couples who tried to get pregnant, researchers calculated that women who gave birth to a child were four times more likely to be alive at the end of the study period compared with women who remained childless. The benefit to men was smaller but still significant — those who fathered children were twice as likely to be alive compared with men who remained childless.

The couples in the study all sought treatment for infertility; some of those who didn’t get pregnant using in vitro fertilization went on to adopt children. These parents also seemed to get a health boost — the mothers in this group were 33% less likely to die compared with women who never had children, and the adoptive fathers were 45% less likely to die.

Rates of mental ill health were similar between couples with and without children of their own, with the exception of those with drug and alcohol problems. However, the prevalence of mental illness in couples who adopted children was around half that of other parents.

-- From "The argument for marriage: Unwed parents are six times more likely to split by the time their child is five" by Sarah Harris, UK Daily Mail 6/17/11

Unmarried parents are six times more likely to split by their child's fifth birthday than those who are married, say researchers.

The study from the [Cambridge-based] think-tank the Jubilee Centre will reignite concerns that Britain is fast becoming a nation of broken homes.

The trend is particularly worrying because other research shows that children brought up by couples, especially married couples, are likely to do better than youngsters in single parent homes.

Last year Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith warned that children from broken homes are nine times more likely to commit a crime than those from stable families.

From "Dad, mom in home is essential, Americans say" by Cheryl Wetzstein, The Washington Times 6/16/11

The majority of [American] children - nearly 70 percent, or 51.8 million - lived with two parents. However, about 27 percent, or 19.8 million, lived with only one parent, in most instances their mother. Another 4 percent, or 3 million, had neither a father nor a mother in their homes.

The Obama administration has announced the “Year of Strong Fathers, Strong Families” as part of its Fatherhood and Mentoring Initiative. . . . [details] are at the National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse at www.fatherhood.gov.

In addition, the Department of Health and Human Services has released public service announcements about how fathers play a unique role in the lives of their children . . .

Separately, the Pew Research Center’s Social and Demographic Trends released a report . . . that found 69 percent of Americans believe having a father in the home is essential for “a child to grow up happily.” A slightly higher 74 percent said the same about mothers in the home.

IVF: Women Living & Procreating Without Men

Americans have a unique opportunity to observe the demise of the family unit in Europe. For example, in the U.K., where laws favoring fatherhood have been discarded, we see that given the choice, many women prefer motherhood without men.

UPDATE 9/28/15 - Virgin Births: IVF Eliminating Fatherhood

-- From "The soaring rate of 'no-father' families: Lesbian couples and single women rush for IVF" by Jenny Hope, U.K. Daily Mail 12/20/10

There has been a doubling of lesbian couples undergoing fertility treatment, while three times as many women are taking the plunge into single parenthood.

The legal changes affecting such families came in the 2008 Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act, which allowed birth certificates to record two mothers or two fathers.

The same Act scrapped the requirement for fertility doctors to consider a child’s need for a male role model before giving IVF treatment.

When the law was changed many Christian groups and campaigners for traditional family values warned it would further undermine the role of fathers.

Government Destines Black Children to Poverty

The federal government reports that 72% of black children are now born to unwed mothers.

Even in black churches, "nobody talks about it. It's like some big secret."

UPDATE 5/30/14: President Obama Replaces Fathers with Government Mentors

UPDATE 6/14/13: Former Congressman Allen West asserts liberal government responsible for African-American broken families and unemployment

UPDATE 1/17/11: Black leaders declare government a failure for black children

UPDATE 11/9/10 New York Times: Black boys failing in school; educators are miffed and want President Obama to find a solution

-- From "Blacks struggle with 72 percent unwed mothers rate" by Jesse Washington, The Associated Press 11/7/10

"The girls don't think they have to get married. I tell them children deserve a mama and a daddy. They really do," [OB-GYN Dr. Natalie] Carroll says . . . Carroll is among the few whom black women will actually listen to.

"A mama can't give it all. And neither can a daddy, not by themselves," Carroll says. "Part of the reason is because you can only give that which you have. A mother cannot give all that a man can give. A truly involved father figure offers more fullness to a child's life."

Statistics show just what that fullness means. Children of unmarried mothers of any race are more likely to perform poorly in school, go to prison, use drugs, be poor as adults, and have their own children out of wedlock.

The black community's 72 percent rate eclipses that of most other groups: 17 percent of Asians, 29 percent of whites, 53 percent of Hispanics and 66 percent of Native Americans were born to unwed mothers in 2008, the most recent year for which government figures are available. The rate for the overall U.S. population was 41 percent.

This issue entered the public consciousness in 1965, when a now famous government report by future senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan described a "tangle of pathology" among blacks that fed a 24 percent black "illegitimacy" rate. The white rate then was 4 percent.

From "Inequality Statistics and Poverty Facts" by James Banks, Young Leaders Program at the Heritage Foundation 10/29/10

In America, a primary cause of child poverty is family breakdown. Today, four out of ten children is born outside of marriage. Sadly, children of single-parent families are seven times more likely to be exposed to poverty than peers in intact families. If unwed mothers married the fathers of their children, their likelihood of living [in] poverty would be reduced by two-thirds.

In this regard, government policies have only worsened problems, penalizing marriage and incentivizing perverse behavior. . . . poverty growth resulting from out-of-wedlock births is not just a statistic; it is a fact that becomes less tractable every year.

Dems Emphasize Their Pro-abortion Stance

The Democratic strategy . . . comes with a risk . . . Does selling the idea that Republican fiscal warriors are social zealots in disguise send a shiver of fear down voters’ spines, or make Democrats look like they are avoiding the subject on most voters’ minds?

-- From "Democrats in Tight Races Put Focus on Abortion Rights" by Kirk Johnson, New York Times 10/6/10

Few Democrats think abortion alone will turn this year’s midterm elections for them; polls show Republicans leading in a generic “Which party would you vote for the Congress?” question.

New York Times/CBS News national polls also say that the political divide between men and women — more men than women gravitating toward Republican candidates, a pattern dating back to Ronald Reagan’s election as president in 1980 — is bigger than average heading into November.

“This isn’t a gap, it’s a canyon,” said Susan Carroll, a senior scholar at the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University, who said the average gender difference in presidential races was about seven or eight percentage points.

Feminization of Church Casts Men Aside

Churches today are designed for women. Why is church not inviting for men? . . . it's because men are drawn to risk, challenge and adventure. "But these things are discouraged in the local church."

-- From "No men in the pews? Could be church's fault" by John Longhurst, Winnipeg Free Press 9/4/10

David Murrow . . . author of the book Why Men Hate Going to Church . . . asks: "What is it about modern Christianity that is driving men away?"

"This church system offers little to stir the masculine heart, so men find it dull and irrelevant," he states, adding that men who do go to church seem passive and bored.

At the same time, he maintains, the very definition of a good Christian has become feminized. Christians, he says, are supposed to be gentle, sensitive and nurturing, focused on home, family and hospitality. The godly are supposed to be calm, gentle, polite and sociable.

"Here's one of the great, unspoken assumptions of worship today: The more emotional the response, the truer the worship," he says. "Great worship results in sensation, passion and good feelings. The worship leader's job is to help the people generate a warm, gooey feeling in their hearts about Jesus."

All this adds up to making church a place where men don't feel welcome.

From "Prof says boys raised to be 'too soft' will be ineffective men" By Bob Allen, Senior Writer, Associated Baptist Press 8/23/10

Bumps, scrapes and bruises are not just associated with boyhood but are necessary in order to raise men equipped to exercise spiritual leadership in their homes [says] Randy Stinson, dean of the School of Church Ministries at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Stinson said one problem facing churches today is a "feminization" of the gospel that began early in Christianity with a "bridal mysticism" that applied poetry about the relationship between man and woman in the Song of Solomon as a metaphor for the church's relationship with Christ.

He said it comes across in music played on Christian radio and in churches with lyrics like "I want to touch you, hold you, feel you" and "I can't stop falling in love with Jesus."

"When we talk about the Christian life in terms of sensual, romantic language, why are we surprised when men don't get that and men are repulsed by that, they don't understand that?" he asked.

Stinson said churches should focus on "ministry by men, not ministry to men."

"Men solve problems. They fix stuff. They get stuff done," he said. "When we give men such weak assignments -- we put them on the bereavement committee and the flower committee and the grounds committee and the fellowships committees -- give men a God-sized task that they know requires a man."

Surgical 'Miracle:' First Genderless Person

Born a man . . . after surgery, claimed to be a woman . . . been there, done that . . . now claims to be without any sexual classification

UPDATE 9/16/11: Australia introduces a third gender option on passports - "indeterminate"

UPDATE 4/1/10: Australia Rescinds Special Status for "Non-Specific" Sex

-- From "Briton is recognised as world's first officially genderless person" by Heidi Blake, London Telegraph 3/15/10

Norrie May-Welby, 48, was born a man but had a sex change operation in 1990, at the age of 28.

After becoming unhappy as a woman, May-Welby decided to become a “neuter”. The 48-year-old is now officially recognised as a person of no specific gender.

May-Welby said: “The concepts of man or woman don’t fit me. The simplest solution is not to have any sex identification.”

From "I’m not a man... or a woman" by Kenny Angove, The Scottish Sun 3/15/10

Norrie May-Welby has been registered on a birth certificate as sex "Not Specified".

. . . Norrie wasn't happy as a woman and stopped taking female hormones to become a "neuter".

Doctors admitted they were unable to determine whether Norrie is male or female.

Now Norrie is thought to be the first gender non-specific person in the world.

The legal landmark was welcomed by the UK's Gender Trust, which said it didn't know of anyone else who'd successfully requested a genderless birth document.

Spokesman Rory Smith said: "It is unusual, but there are many people here who like the idea of being genderless and will welcome this."

Feminization of Education is Destroying America

A sea change has occurred in the education of American women: young girls often academically out-perform boys, are more likely to succeed in college and have flooded once all-male professional schools, notably law and business.

-- From "The Feminization of American Education – Destroying Western Civilization?" by Robert Weissberg, Family Security Matters 10/2/09

For example, U.S. Census Bureau figures show that while the male and female population is about equal, males comprise some 58 percent of all high school drop-outs. Similarly, the number of females entering college between 1967 and 2000 increased by 20 percent, while the proportion of men declined by 4 percent. The American Council on Education’s statistics revealed that in 2005 women earned 57 percent of all BAs. Among African-Americans in college, females outnumber males by a 2 to 1 ratio, the highest ratio for any racial or ethnic group. In fact, at historically black colleges female graduates out-number males by 10 to 1!

Less visible is how this influx of women has shaped what might be called the “style” of knowledge creation and dissemination, and here the news may be less welcome. To be blunt, burgeoning feminization typically emasculates males and their resulting flight from education is a huge though almost invisible national loss. This is an awkward to discuss phenomenon and statistical evidence sketchy, so explication must be largely anecdotal. Still, the appalling potential consequences of feminization warrant discussion.

Fewer Americans in Church, Especially Men

. . . America continues to grow in terms of population, but the percentage of Americans attending church on any given weekend keeps declining. In 1990, it was 20.4 percent. In 2000, it was 18.7. In 2007, it was 17.

George H. Gallup, Jr. wrote . . . "A mountain of Gallup survey data attests to the idea that women are more religious than men, hold their beliefs more firmly, practice their faith more consistently, and work more vigorously for the congregation."

-- From "Study finds attendance at churches still falling" by G. Jeffrey MacDonald, Religion News Service 2/28/09

Booming megachurches might grab headlines, but the bigger story of American congregations is one of accelerating decline, according to David T. Olson, the director of the American Church Research Project. Based on data collected from more than 200,000 churches, he projects that by 2050, only 10 percent of Americans will be in church on any given Sunday.

"Since 2001 especially, mainline and Catholic churches have been experiencing severe decline. They are declining much faster than they were in the 1990s. Evangelicals are still growing numerically, but that numeric growth is not keeping up with population growth.

"From 1990 to 2006, there were 68 million new births in America and a net gain of 23 million immigrants, but churches a lot of times are really not looking outside their doors to think about how to connect with those new Americans.

"Christians are increasingly cocooned and live in environments where they may not know many people who are not Christians."

From "Women More Religious Than Men" by Robert Roy Britt, Editorial Director, Live Science 2/28/09

A new analysis of survey data finds women pray more often then men, are more likely to believe in God, and are more religious than men in a variety of other ways.

The percent of women (and then men) who:
  • Are affiliated with a religion: 86 (79).
  • Have absolutely certain belief in a God or universal spirit: 77 (65).
  • Pray at least daily: 66 (49).
  • Have absolutely certain belief in a personal God: 58 (45).
The survey involved interviews with more than 35,000 U.S. adults by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life.

The latest findings, released Friday, are no surprise, only confirming what other studies have found for decades.

Study: 40% of Men Get Free Pass for Adultery

Sexual revolutionaries hype gene research claiming men may be born to be, or not to be, monogamous -- just one more attack on marriage

-- From "Study Links Gene Variant in Men to Marital Discord" by Shankar Vedantam, Washington Post Staff Writer 9/2/08

Men are more likely to be devoted and loyal husbands when they lack a particular variant of a gene that influences brain activity, researchers announced yesterday -- the first time that science has shown a direct link between a man's genes and his aptitude for monogamy.

The finding is striking because it not only links the gene variant -- which is present in two of every five men -- with the risk of marital discord and divorce, but also appears to predict whether women involved with these men are likely to say their partners are emotionally close and available, or distant and disagreeable. The presence of the gene variant, or allele, also seems predictive of whether men get married or live with women without getting married.

The finding set off a debate about whether people should conduct genetic tests to find out whether potential mates are bad marriage prospects. Several independent scientists called the discovery remarkable and elegant but disagreed over whether such information ought to be used in making personal decisions about love and marriage.

. . . if a man's culture, religion and family background each have a seat at the conference table that determines his attitudes toward marital fidelity and monogamy, his genes might well sit at the head of the table.

“I Have This Stain on My Soul”

‘Pro-choicers’ worried about growing number of men who say they have been traumatized by wives’ or girlfriends’ abortions

From I have this stain on my soul” published 1/8/08 at CaliforniaCatholicDaily.com

Abortion rights activists are “warily” watching the “mobilization” of a movement of men who claim that aiding and abetting abortions gotten by their wives or girlfriends has left them with emotional or psychological scarring, reported the Jan. 7 Los Angeles Times.

“If anecdotes from grieving women can move the Supreme Court, what will testimony about men's pain accomplish?” asked the newspaper.

...
The Times interviewed three men who say they have been troubled by abortions they’ve aided. One, Chris Aubert, said he had been unconcerned about the abortions of two of his girlfriends -- one of which he helped pay for. But then he and his wife saw an ultrasound image of their first child, and he saw abortion was wrong. Aubert and his wife subsequently became Catholic, and they now have five children.

A successful Houston lawyer, Aubert admitted that, had the abortions not occurred, he might not have “the blessings I have now… that’s an intellectual debate I have with myself. I struggle with it.” His former girlfriends, too, he said, might have a better life, now. Yet, he always goes back, he said, to the fact that abortion is immoral. And though he does not feel the angst other men say they feel, "I have this stain on my soul," Aubert said, "and it will always be there."

Mental Health Expert Highlights Abortion's Impact on Men

A campus psychiatrist at UCLA is drawing attention to the only study she has found on young men's responses to abortion. Those men, she asserts, are part of a group of abortion victims who have been essentially "invisible" to those in her profession. Mental health professionals, she says, need to stop ignoring the reality that abortion leaves emotional scars.

The study on men's responses to abortion was not conducted by a mental health professional, but rather a sociologist and academic by the name of Dr. Arthur Shostak. Shostak surveyed 1,000 men sitting in the waiting rooms of abortion facilities across the U.S. and found that 80 percent of those men indicated that that had been the longest and darkest day of their life.

Dr. Miriam Grossman, a psychiatrist at UCLA's student health service, says Shostak then followed those men for months, and even some for years.

"The numbers went up [over that time]," she observes. "The number of men who reported that day feeling some guilt and some ambivalence about what they were doing; the number of men who were asked 'Do you think that in the future you might have some troubling thoughts about this?' -- the percentages went up." Adds Grossman: "So a few years afterwards, they were reporting that it was worse than they had anticipated."
