-- From "CDC: 62 Percent Of HIV-Positive Men Have Unprotected Sex" posted at CBS News ATLANTA 12/3/13
The Centers for Disease Control report, “HIV Testing and Risk Behaviors Among Gay, Bisexual and Other Men who have Sex with Men,” noted that the population of men having sex with men (MSM) is a small proportion of the US population; however, this group represents the majority of people diagnosed with HIV.
In 2011, men who had sex with men accounted for at least half of persons diagnosed with HIV in all but two states. Anal sex is cited by the CDC as having the highest-risk practice for HIV infection.
“High HIV prevalence, lack of awareness of HIV-positive status, and unprotected anal sex” between gay, bisexual and other men are cited by the CDC as contributing to continued new infections among this population.
Unprotected anal sex among MSM increased from 2005 to 2011, and in 2011 one-third of HIV-positive MSM who did not know if they were infected reported unprotected sex with a partner who said they were HIV-negative or did not know either.

The [CDC] analysed data from the National HIV Surveillance System (NHSS) to estimate the percentage of HIV diagnoses among MSM by area of residence. They also examined data from the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance System (NHBS) to estimate unprotected anal sex throughout the past 12 months among MSM communities in 2005, 2008 and 2011.

From "CDC: 62% of Men Who Know They're HIV Positive Have Unprotected Sex With Men" by CNSNews.com Staff 12/2/13
The percentage of self-aware HIV-positive men who engage in unprotected anal sex has been increasing, according to the CDC. In 2005, 55 percent did so. In 2008, 57 percent did so. And, in 2011, 62 percent did so.
"Unprotected anal sex is a high-risk practice for HIV infection, with receptive anal sex having the highest risk," said the CDC report. "Unprotected anal sex also places MSM at risk for other sexually transmitted infections such as syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea. Although condoms can reduce the risk for HIV transmission, they do not eliminate risk and often are not used consistently. Some MSM attempt to decrease their HIV risk by engaging in unprotected sex only with partners perceived to have the same HIV status as their own. However, this practice is risky, especially for HIV-negative MSM, because MSM with HIV might not know or disclose that they are infected and men's assumptions about the HIV status of their partners can be wrong."

From "Nearly two-thirds of gay men who know they have AIDS have sex without condoms: CDC report" by Dustin Siggins, LifeSiteNews.com 12/4/13
CDC spokesperson Nikky Mayes told LifeSiteNews.com in an e-mail that the “new analysis of data suggests concerning signs of sexual risk for HIV infection among gay and bisexual men in 20 major U.S. cities.”
Men who have sex with men, which the CDC estimates at four percent of the American population, are more than 44 times more likely to be diagnosed with HIV/AIDS than heterosexual men. MSM make up 52 percent of the American population with HIV/AIDS, and account for about 63 percent of all new HIV/AIDS cases.
The report does not recommend abstinence for gay men, though it closes by noting reductions in “the burden of HIV among MSM is fundamental to reducing HIV infection in this country.”
