Sen. Ted Cruz: Gay Agenda Ends Christian Liberty

Shortly after the Supreme Court ruled favorably to the Gay Agenda, the Christian Tea Party Senator Ted Cruz of Texas said that the objective of same-sex "marriage" advocates in America is to criminalize the belief that homosexual behavior is sinful.  Cruz also agrees that America is in desperate need of spiritual revival.
“If you look at other nations that have gone down the road toward gay marriage, that’s the next step of where it gets enforced. It gets enforced against Christian pastors who decline to perform gay marriages, who speak out and preach biblical truths on marriage, and that has been defined elsewhere as hate speech.”

Gay marriage could lead to American pastors being charged with hate speech for preaching the Bible, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz said in a recent TV interview.

Cruz thinks that there is no doubt that the advocates who are driving this effort in the United States want to see us end up in the same place as the other countries where individuals are essentially prohibited from speaking out against homosexuality.

The intersection of equality for homosexuals and the freedom to express religious beliefs is a controversial issue . . .

When asked whether or not our country needs a spiritual revival, Cruz stated that it is without a doubt needed.

From "Ted Cruz's impassioned conservatism has many on right viewing him as a presidential contender" by Wayne Slater, Senior Political Writer, Dallas Morning News 7/25/13

The freshman Texas senator’s foray into early primary and caucus country — South Carolina earlier this year, Iowa last week and New Hampshire next month — puts the deep division within the GOP between mainstream and tea party factions in a bright light.

Just seven months into his term, Cruz has emerged as a national model for those in the GOP who want the party to give full voice to the instincts of the base. On the issues they care about — gun rights, immigration, Obamacare — Cruz does not compromise.

“If you look at the last 40 years, a constant pattern emerges,” Cruz told ABC. “Any time Republicans nominate a candidate for president who runs as a strong conservative, we win. And when we nominate a moderate who doesn’t run as a conservative, we lose.”

Last week, in a closed-door gathering of Christian conservatives at a Des Moines hotel, Cruz quoted Scripture and preached small government for nearly an hour, pacing the stage with an ecclesiastical flair. Pastors laid hands on Cruz in prayer for him and the direction of the party.

Sens. Ted Cruz (Tex.) and Rand Paul (Ky.), both mentioned as possible presidential candidates, were the key speakers at a meeting of 400 Iowa ministers and their spouses. The senators also attended an Iowa Republican Party fundraiser.

Cruz drew a strong response Friday from the religious leaders with an emotional appeal to Christians “to hold party leaders accountable” and to engage politically. Paul issued a similar call to action in a more low-key address to the Iowa Renewal Project, the state chapter of a national organization that is likely to begin similar operations soon in other states.

In addition to the Iowa pastors, there were several African American and Latino church leaders from other states in attendance.

UPDATE 1/10/14: From "The Day Religious Liberty Died" by Austin Ruse

The [U.S. Supreme] Court established the Sherbert Test [in the 1960s] with some criteria to determine if the government had violated a person’s religious liberty. The person had to have a sincere religious belief upon which the government had placed a substantial burden for acting on that belief. The government must show there was a “compelling state interest” to burden the believer and that the government has acted in the least restrictive manner to further this compelling interest.

This is a high bar.

The 1990 [Supreme Court] Smith decision [which gutted the Sherbert decision] precipitated a huge reaction from the religious community and civil libertarians. Christians of right and left, along with the secular left, were galvanized. This unique coalition, which included the ACLU, World Jewish Congress, along with the Christian Legal Society and the Traditional Values Coalition, demanded redress.

. . . The coalition called a meeting on July 22, 1999 [which became its last] . . . The new objection from the left was that religious freedom would be used to trump the rights of gays. Such objections were not part of the debate only a few years before. But now they stopped legislation to protect religious believers, and sundered one of the most potent left-right coalitions in U.S. history.

God Hears Thousands Praying for America, Media Doesn't

If a tree falls in the forest . . . or . . . If over ten thousand Christians pray on the streets of Philadelphia but there's zero media there, do they make a noise?
America for Jesus, a coalition of ministries, has organized prayer assemblies across America calling for Christians to take seriously 2 Chronicles 7:14 and pray for revival and even for a Third Great Awakening.
"America is in a state of emergency evidenced by widespread moral depravity and economic meltdown. There is only one remedy; we need to renew our covenant with God. We are calling America back to God and proclaiming liberty and freedom over our nation."
-- Anne Gimenez, National Chairperson, America for Jesus

“We have to be salt and light. We have to redirect this country back toward the light as people of God.”
-- Governor Rick Perry (R-Texas)

“America’s ultimate hope doesn’t rest with the president but with God. Its ultimate problem isn’t political but spiritual. However, the political realm affects every other and holds a critical place. The Scriptures record that unrighteous and ungodly leaders can lead a nation away from God and to judgment, while righteous and godly leaders can lead a nation to restoration. America is at a critical juncture.”

The question is, Prayer in America: Hidden Faith, or Public?

-- From "Robertson: This is Jesus' nation" by United Press International 9/29/12

Thousands of people packed a prayer rally at Philadelphia's Independence Mall Saturday where evangelist Pat Robertson declared "this nation belongs to Jesus."

"I don't care what the ACLU says or any atheist says, this nation belongs to Jesus," Robertson said.

The rally was part of a two-day event organized by a coalition of ministries called One Nation under God.

The group is calling for 40 days of prayer leading up to the presidential election.

From "Robertson, Perkins speak at prayer rally in Philly" by MaryClaire Dale, Associated Press 9/29/12

[Family Research Council president Tony] Perkins asked the crowd to pray for elected officials including Obama.

Speakers throughout the day condemned abortion, gay marriage and population control as practiced by Planned Parenthood. Christian rock music filled the historic mall as speakers challenged the crowd to overcome the seven deadly sins: pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath and slothfulness.

The rally was held outside of Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was signed. Pennsylvania is also where evangelist George Whitefield preached during the first Great Awakening, the 18th-century religious revival that spread through the American colonies.

Organizers plan another prayer rally Oct. 20 in Washington, D.C., two weeks before President Barack Obama faces Republican Mitt Romney in the presidential election.

Christian conservatives who blame "moral depravity" for everything from the recession to terrorism are converging on Philadelphia for a rally they hope will spark a religious revival as Election Day nears.

John Blanchard, national coordinator for "America for Jesus 2012," said the two-day event starting Friday night is nonpartisan. It's modeled after the 1980 "Washington for Jesus" rally, considered a pivotal show of organizational strength by the then-fledgling Christian right. Bishop Anne Gimenez, whose late husband John helped lead the 1980 assembly, is a lead organizer of the Philadelphia gathering.

David Barton, a self-taught historian who emphasizes the Christian roots of the U.S., is another rally supporter. Barton wrote in a Feb. 29 article that Obama has shown "hostility toward Biblical people of faith" while giving "preferential treatment" to Muslims.

From "Family Research Council's Perkins Launches '40 Days to Save America' Campaign" by Troy Anderson, Newsmax 9/24/12

Today, the United States faces multiple crises — a potential economic collapse, moral disintegration, growing secular humanism, attacks on religious liberty, a spate of historic natural disasters, and a severe drought, according to “40 Days to Save America.”

These crises — together more daunting than those Americans faced in 1776, 1863, and 1941— are beyond the power of human beings to resolve without divine intervention — and “nothing short of a Third Great Awakening can save us,” according to the campaign.

. . . faith leaders are calling on pastors, priests, and rabbis to open their churches and synagogues for 40 days of prayer and fasting. They are also calling for “Christian and Jewish voters to make informed choices, voting not as Republicans or Democrats, but as followers of the living God.”

"Satan runs across the world with his doubt and his untruths and what have you, and one of the untruths out there (that) is driven is that people of faith should not be involved in the public arena," Perry said.

"And it falls on us. I mean we truly are Christian warriors, Christian soldiers, and it's for us as Americans to stand our ground and to firmly send a message to Washington that our nation is about more than some secular laws and activist courts," he added

Christians Pray for Detroit, Others Condemn Prayers

Tens of thousands of Christians assembled at Detroit's Ford Field stadium in prayer for Jesus Christ to bless the troubled city, but Muslims, liberals, and the media derided the event as intolerant and hateful because of TheCall organizers' belief in the Bible.

Speaking to thousands inside Ford Field, the controversial leader of a 24-hour prayer rally in Detroit called Friday evening for Jesus to rule over Detroit, Dearborn and America. Otherwise, he warned, the U.S. will fall into ruin.

"We need Jesus' face to appear all across America," Lou Engle thundered to a cheering crowd at TheCall, a movement that has drawn criticism.

"Their message is not one of inclusion; it's of hate," said Jennifer Teed of Detroit, who opposed Engle's prayer event. "I don't see how that's religious."

"We believe that God wants to raise up a new worship sound out of Detroit," said Engle, who is based in Kansas City, Mo., at the International House of Prayer.

As people poured into the rally, a vocal but respectful crowd of about 50 people held signs that said "Love thy Neighbor" and "Pro-woman, Pro-Family, Pro-Choice" and chanted against hate and bigotry. They departed after about an hour.

Other local ministers like Bishop Wayne T. Jackson of Great Faith Ministries on the city's west side said they met with Engle Thursday night and "we are going to walk in love" to the event.

"I know people are getting confused about the rumors out there…And we know there's word out there in the Muslim community that we're coming out against them, but we're not," he said.

"This is not anti-anything. This city needs healing. We are praying that Muslims will convert because we believe Christ is the way," he said. "We pray that people will come to the cross. We pray that Buddhists will come to the cross, that everyone can come to the cross."

The event kicked off Friday night with participants fasting, praying and singing at Ford Field. With no big name bands or speakers, the event was touted as a solemn assembly, rather than a festival, where worshippers seek God.

The Pentecostal-style event consisted of worshipping and praying. Some participants opted to rest during some part of the 24 hours while others chose to stick it out all the way until the end – 6 p.m. Saturday.

Pastor Barbara J. Yoder, founding apostle and senior pastor of Shekinah Christian Church in Ann Arbor, Mich., stood on stage in the final hours of the event to motivate and challenge the city.

"God is beginning to overtake this territory and God is raising up leaders," she said. "God is calling you into the darkest places of Detroit.

Matt Peyerk, 25, a member of Oakland Christian Church in Oakland Township, attended the Call . . .

“Issues like abortion, righteousness and justice in the social system were talked about. That’s about it,” Peyerk said. “Nothing has been mentioned about Islam. There hasn’t been a lot of talk devoted to it. We don’t hate the Muslims. We love them. We prayed for the Muslims and Arab people.”

Peyerk said a former terrorist spoke at the Call. “He was in a position of bringing harm to American people. He converted. For me, that was the most powerful part of the Call. He was apologizing on behalf of all terrorists,” Peyerk said.

Waterford resident Amy Maggi Terao said, “Apparently they speak about the terrorist attacks that root from Islam, which is an attack from Satan. This is just one part of their preaching, which if you ask me is relative to the times right now. Unfortunately, Muslims may be offended. It's kind of like when ‘Christians’ bomb abortion clinics and Christians get the bad rap.”

“In my opinion, I didn’t hear any anti-Islam rhetoric or anything like that,” Maccabees says. “We’re all God’s children, all Abe’s children at the end of the day.”

Gerrit Anderson came from Lansing to pray for Detroit and Michigan.

“It seems like the Lord’s anointing on Detroit, that he wants to move this city for some reason,” Anderson says. “Kind of taking a broken city and reviving it, and showing that picture to the nation. That he longs for America to come back to him, and to his love.”

More than 1,000 Cleveland and Bradley County area residents gathered Sunday in Lee University’s Conn Center in remembrance of the 9/11 tragedies that befell America and to pray for a spiritual renewal in their emotional aftermath.

Billy Wilson, executive director of the Awakening America Alliance and The International Center For Spiritual Renewal said, “The attacks on our nation on September 11, 2001, were the wake-up call of a lifetime for all of us and 10 years following the terrorist attacks on 9/11 our nation needs God’s protection and grace more than ever.”

“America is overdue for a spiritual turn-around and for a new awakening,” he said. “We do hope that Cry Out America will help grass roots Christian believers increase their courage to call for public prayer. We have witnessed wonderful energy and commitment from a remnant of Christians across America who have not given up on this nation and who are convinced that united, extraordinary prayer is critical to our future.”

[Pastor Lawrence] Cook, the pastor of Living Vine Worship Center, spearheaded the second Cry Out America prayer event, a part of the national Awakening America Alliance.

Conducted by Cook and by four other ministers from Baptist, Pentecostal Holiness and Church of God denominations, the service included the singing of patriotic songs and hymns, as well as prayer.

"The enemy is Satan," said Cook, suggesting that a front page newspaper story should be written every time someone is saved. "He turns each other against each other. Give thanks and glory for one more year we've shared 9/11."

Dr. Richard Porter of the Orangeburg-Calhoun Baptist Association, said that "just as 9/11 changed the world, Christians know that prayer can change the world, too," He urged prayer for the nation's leaders to make decisions that are good for God, not politics.

Fighting for Jesus: Prayer at Football in Miss.

The recent atheists' legal threat demanding an end to prayer at sporting events in DeSoto County, Mississippi and the acquiescence of school administrators, has lit a firestorm of Christian activism at schools across the county. Parents and students alike organized a variety of public prayer events, including The Lord's Prayer recited in unison at the football game immediately following the National Anthem.

Texas-sized Prayers to God - Gov. Perry

With a final stadium count exceeding 30,000, a day-long prayer and fasting celebration in Houston focused believers on America's dire condition, while accepting fault both individually and collectively as Christians, but secular media focused on their nemesis Rick Perry -- a Christian leader emerging as the next President of the United States.

Thousands of people attending Saturday's prayer rally in Texas seemed oblivious to the controversy surrounding the event as they focused all their attention on glorifying one name – Jesus.

Despite the controversy, Luis Cataldo, director of the event, was happy to see a largely filled stadium Saturday morning, especially considering that organizers never advertised any speakers or even a program.

"The church is gathered to honor one name, one kingdom, one rulership – the kingdom of Jesus, the name of Jesus. Only the name of Jesus," said Cataldo, who serves at International House of Prayer in Kansas City.

From "30,000 people fill Houston stadium for the Response" by Jason Embry, American-Statesman Staff 8/6/11

A band complete with guitars, keyboards and drums led the crowd in hours' worth of contemporary Christian praise music. Members of the audience swayed and danced euphorically, their arms lifted upward as they sang along with the youthful musicians on stage.

Leaders frequently asked the audience to break into small prayer groups, while those on stage and in the audience described a country overwhelmed by problems.

Many in the audience said Perry had little to do with their decision to come. Still, the event put him, at least for a day, squarely in the middle of evangelical America, a community that will play a key role in the 2012 Republican presidential campaign. Perry is expected to enter that race later this month.

Many in the audience said a belief that prayer would solve the country's problems motivated them to attend.

From "Perry to evangelicals: I'm 1 of you" by April Castro & Thomas Beaumont, Associated Press 8/6/11

Texas Gov. Rick Perry sent a strong message to the nation's evangelicals Saturday . . .

He asked Christians to turn to God for answers to the nation's troubles, and asked the audience to pray for President Barack Obama — though he did not use the Democratic incumbent's name — as well as for the American troops killed in the weekend attack on a U.S. helicopter in Afghanistan.

Perry's audience Saturday was filled with people who sang with arms outstretched in prayer — and wept — as Christian groups played music on stage. And Perry, himself, huddled on the stage in a prayer circle with several ministers who helped lead the event. It was Perry's idea and was financed by the American Family Association, a Tupelo, Miss.-based group that opposes abortion and gay rights and believes that the First Amendment freedom of religion applies only to Christians.

Critics argued the event — called The Response — inappropriately blended politics and religion.

To applause, Perry gave his view of a "personal God" whose "agenda is not a political agenda. His agenda is a salvation agenda." The governor added, with a chuckle, "He is a wise, wise God, and he’s wise enough to not be affiliated with any political party."

. . . Perry and other speakers were careful to avoid overt partisan appeals and the governor’s office said taxpayer money wasn’t used to put on the event, which was financed by the American Family Assn. of Tupelo, Miss.

"Father, our heart breaks for America. We see discord at home. We see fear in the marketplace. We see anger in the halls of government and, as a nation, we have forgotten who made us, who protects us, who blesses us, and for that, we cry out for your forgiveness," said Perry, praying with hands clasped.

“Like all of you,” Perry told the crowd as he opened his remarks, “I Iove this country deeply. Thank you all for being here — indeed the only thing that you love more is the living Christ.”

The prayer gathering had over 8,000 registered attendees - a number that could have seemed small inside the 71,000-seat Reliant Stadium here, where the Texans NFL team plays.

But far more people showed up . . .

The crowd was diverse in race and age. English-language prayers were overlaid with a Spanish translation. People came with their families - a kids’ area was set up in the Jose Cuervo Cantina on the stadium’s south side - and teens and young adults came by themselves or with their churches. Many attendees brought well-worn Bibles stacked with notations or stowed in well-worn cases.

From "Full transcript of Perry’s remarks at the Response" by Jason Embry, Statesman 8/6/11

“I’m so humbled to be in the midst of men and women who have answered the call to prayer and fast for our nation. I want to especially thank brother C.L. Jackson who’s standing here with me and a great man of God, and Alice Patterson. They both have been with me and praying with me and supported me through the years. And pastor, we stood in your church one day and we got on our knees in a moment of powerful prayer and I just thank you both for being here with me.

“Like all of you, I love this country deeply, thank you all for being here. Indeed the only thing that you love more is the living Christ. But our hearts do break for those who suffer, those afflicted by the loss of loved ones, the pain of addiction, the strife that they may find at home, those who have lost jobs, who have lost their homes, people who have lost hope. Those that cannot see the light in the midst of all the darkness. Because we know a loving God, we know the greatest darkness comes just before the morning. We know, we know a loving God and we know the darkness that he takes care of and wipes away. We know that there is hope for those who trust in him who fills our hearts with joy and gives us life. This God who knows our imperfections, he didn’t leave us to live a life in our sins, but paid the price for them. He who knew no sin, he gave his life in ransom for me. This loving, this loving and perfect God is also a personal God. He desires not a show of religion, but a deep connection with our innermost being.

“His agenda is not a political agenda, his agenda is a salvation agenda. Brother C.L., you and I have had this conversation. He’s a wise, wise God, and he’s wise enough to not be affiliated with any political party, or for that matter, he’s wise enough to not be affiliated with any man-made institutions. He’s calling all Americans, of all walks of life, to seek him, to return to him, to experience his love and his grace and his acceptance, experience a fulfilled life regardless of the circumstances. I want you to join with me as I share his word with you:”

(Perry then read from three Bible passages: Joel 2:12-17; Isaiah 40: 28-31; Ephesians 3:14-21.)

“As I finish I want to ask each of you to bow your head in prayer, or go to that position of prayer, and pray with us. Lord, you are the source of every good thing, you are our only hope. And we stand before you today in awe of your power, and in gratitude for your blessings, in humility for our sins. Father our heart breaks for America. We see discord at home. We see fear in the marketplace. We see angers in the halls of government. And as a nation we have forgotten who made us, who protects us, who blesses us, and for that we cry out for your forgiveness. We pray for our nation’s leaders, Lord, for parents, for pastors, for the generals, for governors, that you would inspire them in these difficult times. Father we pray for our president, that you would impart your wisdom upon him, that you would guard his family. We pray for our military and the families who love them. Father especially, for those special operators who lost their life yesterday in defending our freedoms. You call us to repent, Lord, and this day is our response. We give it all to you. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. And amen.”

Africans in D.C. Praying for American Revival

African Christians recognize that The Church in America is failing Christ, and so their missionary effort is focusing on the United States, to once again, be that "City upon a hill."

Pastors and church members are taking to the West Washington Mall [today] to pray that God will send a spiritual awakening to America in an event organized by the African Strategic Leadership Prayer Network, and up to 50,000 people are expected.

Pastor Michael Obi is one of the organizers and he says it's important to pray right now.

"The purpose of the timing has a lot to do with the spiritual climate of the nation. We also realize that for decades, God has used America to bring light and the Gospel to Africa. America has been used greatly." Obi explained.

Event partner Awakening America Alliance Chairman Billy Wilson says the event is targeted at those who call themselves Christian in the American church.

In addition to bringing a spiritual awakening, Johnson also hopes the event sends a message. Although the U.S. is often criticized abroad, he said, "There are people, immigrants, who love this country and who desire America to continue to be strong, continue to be prosperous, continue to be Christian."

Pastor Michael Obi [said,] "We believe God will grant us that mercy, and we'll see a drastic change in the policy of the nation from the head or from some kind of direction, a shift," he said. Without that shift, he believes God will allow circumstances to occur that could push the nation toward repentance.

Christians 'Cry Out America' to God Nationwide

“Spiritual awakenings of the Church have always occurred after a season of concerted, united prayer by God’s people in a locality, whether small or large, when the circumstances of life call His people to sacrificial prayer, repentance, and subsequent intimacy with Jesus.”

-- From "Christians Avoid Controversy, Focus on Spiritual Revival at 9/11 Event" by Michelle A. Vu, Christian Post Reporter 9/12/10

. . . the dozens of people gathered at the Pentagon Memorial on Saturday for the local Cry Out America event focused on praying for a spiritual awakening in America.

“We’ve seen the collapse of things we never thought would collapse. We’ve seen terrorism around the world, in America, on college campuses and in restaurants and places that have amazed us,” said Billy Wilson, executive chairman of the Awakening America Alliance, on Saturday. “We have seen a generation that is raised surrounded and inundated with fear.”

Under the Cry Out America theme of “Every State, Every County, and Every Heart,” Christians in 842 counties – or nearly a third of the counties in the nation – gathered at noon local time to pray for America’s armed forces, its youth, families, clergy, and churches.

Texas: They prayed for their country, the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and for reform and unity of the church.

Missouri: It is a cross-denominational, nonpartisan prayer initiative, coordinated by several pastors and members of many Springfield churches,

Florida: Prayers rained down on Lake City Saturday afternoon as community members gathered for a local prayer movement. The rally was part of a larger national movement.

First Lady Calls Christians to Prayer & Fasting

Marie Olive Kabila, wife of President Joseph Kabila of the Democratic Republic of Congo, is leading the people in prayer to God for spiritual change of the country.

-- From "Congo's First Lady: 'We Need You, Lord'" by George Thomas, CBN News Sr. Reporter 9/7/10

Her participation in a recent Christian event drew national attention and came as a surprise to many in her country.

In the small church on the east side of the capital city of Kinshasa, hundreds of people gathered recently as Mrs. Kabila declared three days of nationwide prayer and fasting.

"I am here to tell you that I will never be ashamed of my Lord's name," said Kabila. "We need Him desperately to heal our country."

According to the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, more than 5 million people have died in the country since 1998 from famine, violence and disease.

"The First Lady is a strong person of faith," said Theodore Mugalu, who serves as the presidential couple's spiritual advisor. "She knows that it is only through prayer that we can face the goliaths of our culture. That's why these days are so important."

Glenn Beck's Rally & American Christian Leadership

Why would as many as a million American Christians go to Washington D.C. to be led by a Mormon? Is Glenn Beck filling a void of Roman Catholic and evangelical leadership in regards to leading America to God? Would God use a guy like Glenn Beck to teach a thing or two to America's priests and pastors?

-- From "Beck's faith troubles some fans" by Meredith Heagney, Columbus Dispatch 9/3/10

[Glenn Beck's] message - America must turn back to God and traditional values - resonates with the evangelicals who make up a large part of the Christian conservative movement.

Politics is largely about pragmatism, said John Green, an expert on religion and politics at the University of Akron.

"Christian conservatives are not the majority in this country," he said. "They really have to work together if they're going to achieve the policy goals they want, such as preventing the spread of same-sex marriage or limiting the availability of abortion.

"It's almost like what we're seeing with Glenn Beck is the further evolution of bringing together these conservative religious communities who still have theological disagreements with each other."

From "Which God Should We Turn To?" by Chuck Colson, BreakPoint 9/3/10

Evangelicals figured prominently in the rally, both in the crowd and on the podium. That’s not surprising: We value truth, integrity and honor and, of course, pray for America to “turn back to God.”

But because Beck is not a Christian leader, I couldn’t help but wonder what the willingness of Christians to follow him says about the state of our own leadership.

[The rally was] an appeal to civil religion. And that’s ok. Civil religion has its place. But it’s never to be confused with the real thing.

Glenn Beck is stepping into a leadership vacuum, and for that I applaud him. But folks, that means it’s time for Christians to become leaders ourselves. 2 Chronicles 7:14 tells God’s people to humble themselves, pray, seek God’s face and turn from our wicked ways. This is the biblically-prescribed way for transforming societies.

The Bible doesn’t specify how exactly God will “heal our land,” but part of the answer will be in our setting a godly example for others, and in our doing the gospel in every walk of life, and in defending truth. The power of transformed lives, of people who no longer live for themselves but for God and their neighbor, has been the way Christianity has always shaped societies throughout its history.

And that’s a power that mere civil religion cannot possess.

Glenn Beck Stirs Fear in Mainstream Media

The last thing the liberal media wants now is another conservative personality "talking about God" who might energize Americans, or worse yet, witness a Christian revival.

The media strategy, as always, is to destroy the conservative messenger, and sow seeds of division of Christian America.

-- From "Beck's marriage of politics and religion raising questions" by Michelle Boorstein, Washington Post Staff Writer 8/31/10

Two days after Beck's "Restoring Honor" rally drew a crowd that stretched from the Lincoln Memorial to the World War II Memorial, many Americans were still trying to figure out if the commentator had just seized the mantle of the religious right.

Conservative Christian talk radio was crackling with debate about Beck's Mormonism. Religious progressives were assailing his attacks on President Obama's Christianity. Scholars of religion and politics were analyzing Beck's evangelical-like talk of being saved from drug and alcohol addiction. Some pastor-bloggers were bemoaning what they consider the conflation of celebrity, politics and spirituality.

"Politically, everyone is with it, but theologically, when he says the country should turn back to God, the question is: Which God?" said Tom Tradup, vice president for news and talk at Salem Radio Network, which serves more than 2,000 stations, most of them Christian. "How much of this is turning to God? How much is religious revival and how much is a snake oil medicine show?"

Yet [Beck,] the Mormon convert seems an unlikely leader for conservative Christians, many of whom don't regard Mormonism as part of their faith.

"I'm a little nervous about that kind of talk," said Janet Mefferd, a nationally syndicated Christian talk show host who said most callers Monday wanted to talk about Beck. "I know he means well and loves this country, but he doesn't know enough about theology to know what kind of effect he's having. Christians are hearing something different than what he thinks he's saying."

Although he doesn't consider Mormons to be Christians, [Southern Baptist leader, Richard] Land said he agrees with Beck's basic premise that American society must be "rebuilt from the bottom up."

From "Beck's Christian credentials scrutinized" by Elizabeth Tenety, Newsweek posted at Washington Post

At his public events this weekend, Beck emphasized that he viewed his 'Restoring Honor' event and the emerging movement behind it as spiritual, rather than political: "This is the beginning of the great awakening of America," Beck said Friday night.

But to what version of religion should Americans be awakened?

"Mormonism is not a Christian faith," Focus on the Family's Tom Minnery said during the 2008 election campaign, when GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney's Mormonism became a political liability.

R. Albert Mohler wrote in 2007 that he did not believe Mormons are Christians, as he found their theology "incompatible with "traditional Christian orthodoxy."

Evil & the Failure of The Church

"If I were the devil and I wanted to really ruin America, who would I subvert and attack? I would attack the churches, the schools and the news media."

-- From "Kupelian to CBN: Churches 'subverted, dumbed down'" © 2010 WorldNetDaily 7/7/10

[Author, David Kupelian interview excerpts:]

"The churches have very much fallen down on the job," responded Kupelian, who said they "have been subverted and dumbed down just like everything else: Our schools, our colleges, our major institutions have really been hurt, they've been subverted, they've lost their core message that they had, that really gave the great strength that America has had for all these years."

Change We Can Believe In (2 Chron. 7:14)

America needs change. Yet the change we need will not come from Washington or Wall Street. It must come from God. It must begin with God's repentant people praying to Him for the change He requires and the change we need.
If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
(2 Chron. 7:14)
-- From "Conservatives Urge Americans to Pray for a Troubled Nation" by Susan Jones, CNSNews Senior Editor 5/20/09

America is in desperate need of spiritual healing, say conservative Christian leaders, who are organizing a day of mass prayer and repentance on behalf of the nation.

The “Call 2 Fall” event will take place on July 5. “The day after America celebrates her independence, it's our goal to have eight million Christians declaring our dependence on God,” the Family Research Council says on its Web site. “The Call 2 Fall is a simple but powerful commitment to get on our faces before the Lord, asking Him to reshape our lives and renew our land.”

“Only He can quiet the storms and turn the hearts of this country--and our culture--toward Him. Only He can restore a respect for life, marriage, and faith in the halls of power. And only we can ask Him to,” the FRC says.

The event also has historical precedent: The First Continental Congress called for a day of public humiliation, fasting, and prayer throughout the Colonies on July 20th, 1775, just after war broke out with England, the FRC noted.
