Catholic Univ. Hits Staffer for Pro-Catholic Views

An alumni office employee of Loyola Marymount University (LMU), a Jesuit institution located near Los Angeles, California, espoused the Roman Catholic views concerning "sexual orientation" with Cosette Carleo, a student who claims to be "gender neutral."  Carleo accused the employee of committing the hate crime of "denying transgenderism" so the University promptly suspended the employee.
“The University stands behind its statement of non-discrimination, which prohibits unwelcome, harassing conduct on the basis of several classifications, including gender identity and sexual orientation.”

-- From "15-Year Catholic Employee of Loyola Marymount University Suspended Accused of Hate Crime" by Kevin Whitson, Western Journalism 4/30/16

There apparently are two versions to the story of what occurred April 14 on the campus of Loyola Marymount University.

If the LMU Gender Sexuality Alliance’s story is to be believed, an LMU employee of the alumni office allegedly tore down and threw away LGBTQ+ Awareness Week posters, and accosted three LMU students, one of who self-identifies as gender neutral.

According to LMU’s GSA press release, the employee “aggressively confronted” the students who were attempting to rehang the posters and “replied hatefully” to them adding the employee was “denying the existence of transgender people” and that “heterosexuality is the only truth.”

Substantiating the employee’s claim that she’s the target of a smear campaign, an alumnus, Anthony Gonzales, overheard the entire incident and wrote a lengthy article in defense of the long-time LMU employee.

The other side of the story is vastly different from the one being told by Carleo, the GSA, and The Loyolan (campus newspaper) which published an article about the incident. . . .

From "Believing in two genders is a ‘hate crime’ under police investigation at Catholic college" by Matt Lamb, University of Nebraska-Omaha, posted at The College Fix 4/27/16

Both the [Los Angeles Police Department] and the university’s Bias Incident Response Team are investigating the stated belief that only two genders exist, male and female, as a hate crime.

. . . Gonzales said the employee was “in the process of seeking legal counsel” to defend herself and hold LMU accountable for how she was “unfairly treated and summarily dismissed” before she could give her side. He did not immediately respond to a Facebook message from The Fix Tuesday night.

Though the Bias Incident Response Team told The Loyolan there were two investigations – the sign removal and the employee’s conversation with the students – Carleo admitted they have no evidence that the employee removed the signs.

Carleo told The Fix that while voices were raised in the conversation, there was no actual yelling, and witnesses who considered intervening saw that “there was no danger.”

From "Alleged LGBTQ+ hate crime, during Rainbow Week" by Kellie Chudzinski, Asst. News Editor, The Los Angeles Loyolan 4/19/16

Three student workers from the LGBT Student Services office were engaged in a verbal altercation with an LMU employee from the Alumni Relations office between 9 a.m and 12 p.m. on Palm Walk near the Von der Ahe building on Thursday, April 14, according to a Gender-Sexuality Alliance press release.

Senior biology major Catalina Ibarra and senior business majors Kaii Blanton and Cosette Carleo noticed that signs put up for Rainbow Week, or LGBTQ+ Awareness Week, by LGBT Student Services (LGBTSS) had been removed and placed behind a garbage can, according to Carleo.

As Blaton, Carleo and Ibarra attempted to replace the signs, an employee from the Alumni Relations office, whose name has not yet been made available to the public, allegedly approached the students about LGBTQ+ issues and voiced opinions on differing sexualities, expressing that anti-LGBTQ+ signs should be put up in place of the students’ signs. The employee also referred to one of the students as a man, even though that student had informed the employee that they identify as gender neutral, according to Carleo.

From "University employee is accused of hate crime for defending Catholic teaching" posted at California Catholic Daily 4/17/16

[Excerpts from an April 16 email forwarded to California Catholic Daily from the husband of the subject employee:]

At the time [of the incident] my wife was talking to alum [Gonzales], who thankfully heard the entire exchange. After determining they had permission to post the signs, the group engaged in a what my wife thought was a very good dialogue of ideas and opinions. The girls were posting signs promoting the various sexual activities and orientations of the LGBTQ. My wife is Catholic and a strong supporter of the Church, marriage and family, and Catholic morality. Of particular focus was the girls promotion of what they label “PanSexual” i.e. someone who participates (or prefers) every kind of sexual encounter. One of the girls identified herself as lesbian and accused my wife of not loving women. My wife pointed out she was called to love everyone, including the girls. She said she found the whole sexual labeling thing was causing confusion especially in the youth whose sexuality is still malleable. The girls agreed with my wife that they too disagreed with the ideas behind Pan-sexuality, claiming they wanted monogamy, but wanted to give it a label so people could identify themselves. My wife pointed out that this was promotion of these lifestyles not just labeling and this was offensive to her heart. It was lovingly expression of disagreement, and a legitimate exchange of ideas and reasons, with my wife defending the Truths of the Church, and listening with love to these girls ideas.

. . . Everyone thanked the other upon leaving, the girls thanking my wife for her opinions and “appreciated the dialogue’. My wife agreed.

. . . My wife was informed this morning that she is suspended from her job of 15 years pending an investigation of this “incident”. No one got her side of the story. In addition there was an alumni witness who verified her accounts of the conversation. No one has spoken to him either.

. . . No-one from the University talked to my wife before the Loyolan article was written, or before she was suspended and sent home. My wife, when she read the article, immediately went to her supervisor to protest the accuracy of the article. Her supervisor refused to talk to her and simply sent her home to let HR investigate.

Clearly my wife has been defamed by the Loyolan, and by lack of supervision, the University itself. The University is responsible for this hateful twist of the truth and allowing these lies to be published without getting the other side. If the girls involved really concocted this lie they too are guilty of libel and slander. We are a Catholic Family and hold true to the faith expressed by Christ. But now, being a loving Catholic called to care for others is a Hate crime at LMU, ironically at so called Catholic University.

Unlike the school's student-run Gay Straight Alliance club, the [new LGBT office] will supply professional staff to minister to LGBT students, following in the footsteps of Georgetown University and Gonzaga University.  Dr. Lane Bove, senior vice president for Student Affairs, described the office's role as promoting "equality, visibility and inclusion of LGBT students within the LMU community" as well as "advocacy and support for the LGBT student community" and engaging "regular dialogues about the intersection of sexual orientation and gender identity with issues of faith, religion and culture.”

At the Web site of LMU's Intercultural Affairs/Sexual and Gender Identity Office, the school states a commitment to "developing socially responsible men and women" who will "learn to value the unique qualities of diverse cultures." Opposing Sexual Deviancy Verboten in Calif. School

A handful of students at Shadow Hills High School in Indio, California recently began wearing tiny stickers showing their opposition to the Gay Agenda advocacy that is widespread in the school.  Naturally, the sexual revolutionaries complained, so the the Desert Sands Unified School District has banned the stickers.

Both anti-gay stickers and pro-gay rights symbols previously had been allowed as a matter of free speech at Shadow Hills High School in Indio, a city outside Palm Springs. But Superintendent Gary Rutherford wrote in a letter to Shadow Hills staff on Monday that new “information” had prompted an additional review. He didn’t note what that information was.

“Recently some information has been brought forward that requires additional investigation and follow-up to determine a proper course of action,” Rutherford wrote. “Pending further investigation, we are going to ask students who are displaying the symbol showing a rainbow pattern with a circle and a line, at least for now, to remove symbols while at school.”

Site and district administration had previously said they could not ask the 12 students to remove the anti-gay symbols in the interest of protecting freedom of speech rights.

Officials would not comment on what additional information prompted the [reversal and] investigation. A call to Shadow Hills Principal Marcus Wood was not immediately returned.

The symbols began appearing on campus several weeks ago when a handful of students started wearing the anti-gay badges on their school ID cards. One of the symbols was placed on the window of the Gay Straight Alliance coordinator's classroom, and a student changed his Google Classroom profile picture to an image of the symbol, said AP U.S. History teacher Amy Oberman.

Teachers and students at Shadow Hills were upset with the district's rationale last week, saying that LGBTQ students on campus felt targeted by the students.

Both symbols are allowed as a matter of free speech, as long as they do not cause a disruption at Shadow Hills High School in Indio, a city outside Palm Springs, administrators said in a statement emailed to staff last week.

“We all have a right to freedom of speech, but students also have a right to be educated without fear. This has always been our policy, and we will continue to enforce it,” according to their Wednesday statement.

Go To Jail for Bible Speech: Univ. Texas Police

Several officers of the University of Texas Police Department (UTPD) at Austin issued a citation to Joshua Borchert, an intern with Campus Ministry USA, for using offensive words while preaching on a street across from University property.  The police officers told Borchert that he could face jail for using the words “penis” and “anus” in the context of warning passersby of sexually immoral behavior.

-- From "University Of Texas Police Give Preacher Citation For Offending Students" by Peter Hasson, Daily Caller 2/10/16

The university told TheDC that the officer was responding to students who claimed to be “verbally harassed” by the intern-preacher. The video shows the officer explaining that the intern’s use of “anal” and “penis” offended students, before issuing a citation for disorderly conduct. “After a lawyer representing Joshua called the chief of police, the chief called Joshua and apologized. The citation was withdrawn.” Brother Jed told TheDC.

Ari Cohn, a lawyer with the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) told TheDC that he found the video “deeply disturbing.” “Speech that simply offends others is protected by the First Amendment, and contrary to the officer’s statements, it is not the job of police to ‘do something’ about it. Issuing a disorderly conduct citation based on the content of speech violates decades of clear Supreme Court precedent,” Cohn said.

“Even worse is that while Brother Jed is not a campus community member, and was not even on campus property, the officer justified his decision with the fact that students on campus across the way were offended. The implications for campus expression are dire,” Cohn went on to say. “If offending someone on campus is now grounds for criminal citations, students wishing to express themselves will much more likely censor themselves, or simply refrain from speaking at all. Such a result is unacceptable, legally and morally, at a state university bound by the First Amendment.”

From "UTPD voids disorderly conduct citation after review" by Wynne Davis, The Daily Texan 2/12/16

After reviewing a citation written to an evangelical preacher for disorderly conduct, the University of Texas Police Department voided the citation because it did not meet the requirements of the law.

“Our review further showed that the officers in training responded to a call for service in good faith and with respect for all parties involved, including the person(s) wishing to file charges as well those being accused,” UTPD Chief David Carter said in a statement.

The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution gives all people the right to freedom of speech. Even hurtful and hateful speech is covered under the amendment, and police officers must defend everyone’s constitutional rights, Carter said.

Carter said if an individual was threatening a student with their speech, the police could and would take action against that person.

“I’m not protesting; I’m preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ,” said Kirsten Borchert, 20, from Lafayette, Indiana.

Borchert was at DePauw University “preaching” with The Campus Ministry USA, based out of Terre Haute. The confrontational evangelical Christian group travels from campus to campus “Preaching specifically about sin and hell, and how sin leads to hell,” she said.

“I don’t want you [students] to burn forever and ever and ever in the lake of fire,” said Joshua Borchert, 22, who was fully adorned in his Eagle Scout uniform.

[In response,] Students mobilized quickly.

“I saw that post on Facebook, and I saw that there were protesters here saying homophobic things,” said sophomore Marissa Higgs. “When I heard about it I was like, 'okay, I've got to go.' So I grabbed my five foot rainbow flag off my bed and ran here.”

President Brian Casey was on the scene almost immediately after the situation began to heat up. As the afternoon continued, many at the protest felt a sense of pride and community with their fellow classmates.

“I don’t know why the school can’t kick them out,” junior Hector Rivera said, “It’s a private institution, so at least I’m curious to know more like the policies and politics behind all this.”

“We’re presenting no danger,” said Brother Jed Smock, the man in charge of The Campus Ministry USA.

. . . after The Campus Ministry USA was escorted off of DePauw’s grounds, Casey sent an email to students, faculty and staff announcing an open forum to be held at 4 p.m. in Ubben Quadrangle to address the protests.

Casey, DePauw Student Body President Craig Carter, City of Greencastle Mayor Sue Murray and Vice President of Student Life Christopher Wells gave short speeches to the crowd.

“Today we got invaded by people who came here, by people who came here who tried to shake our cores, who tried to shake our values,” Carter said, “I’ve never been more proud to be a Tiger.”

Students called for justice, and proclaimed that they were unsafe on campus and that the university was not doing enough to protect them.

Kirsten [Borchert] threw her hands in the air, carrying a Bible up with them, as she exclaimed her message to the crowd gathered outside of the Student Union Building.

The students, who stood at a distance not long ago no longer allowed Kirsten her personal space. They surrounded her with questions and comments, yelling back as she shouted to a crowd that no longer cared what she had to say. They were visibly aggravated.

“We’re using [Kirsten] because she’s usually the calmer one,” Joshua [Borchert] said, dressed in his Eagle Scout uniform. “I tend to rile them up more. They wouldn’t want me out there right now.”

Students screamed obscenities as Kirsten preached against getting drunk.

Joshua didn’t mind the crowd screaming at his sister. He said he is used to it.

“We go through different stages and cycles. She does that to get their attention, and once she gets their attention then she can continue to calm them,” Joshua said. He then explained the five-stage technique used by the group to humble the students into a calm crowd that can then receive their message.

Joshua and Kirsten have preached at around 30 universities in about 20 different states, Joshua said.

“Our message is repent, and be free from sin. Because if these people don’t repent, then they’re headed for hell,” Kirsten had explained.

From "Apology post" by Piet Lammert 12/4/15

I am writing to take responsibility and apologize for a post that I made on my private Facebook account yesterday. I mistakenly left my setting open to “Public” and in doing so made a post that offended some members of our community and beyond. I deeply regret doing so, take full responsibility, and hope that those I offended will accept my apology.

With true humility, I write to apologize for the offensive statement that I recently posted on Facebook. I did not intend this statement literally when I wrote it–it was an exaggeration–but soon after realized that it was unintentionally hurtful, offensive, and divisive at a time when more than ever we need compassion and understanding.

In short, I did not mean what I said and wish with all my heart that I could take it back. But I need to take responsibility for it nonetheless, because I wrote it. It does not represent who I am or what I believe, but I wrote it. This post is an effort to at least begin to make amends.

Had I simply written what I meant, the post would have reflected my urgent distress at the epidemic of mass violence in our country, which more recent events have proven to span all social groups. Ironically, in my effort to point out that we run the risk of simplifying the problem by singling out a particular ethnic group, I did exactly that to the group to which I belong. It was careless and rash.

Must Censor Speech, Say Most College Students

A recent survey proves the success of public education indoctrination of children against freedom of politically incorrect speech:  A majority of college students across America believe that colleges should not permit faculty or students to speak freely because "hate speech" is against the law.  One-third of respondents indicated they were NOT familiar with the First Amendment of the Constitution ("whatever THAT is!"), while others say it is "outdated."

. . . The William F. Buckley Jr. Program at Yale recently commissioned a survey from McLaughlin & Associates about attitudes towards free speech on campus. Some 800 students at a variety of colleges across the country were surveyed. The results, though not surprising, are nevertheless alarming. By a margin of 51 percent to 36 percent, students favor their school having speech codes to regulate speech for students and faculty. Sixty-three percent favor requiring professors to employ “trigger warnings” to alert students to material that might be discomfiting. One-third of the students polled could not identify the First Amendment as the part of the Constitution that dealt with free speech. Thirty-five percent said that the First Amendment does not protect “hate speech,” while 30 percent of self-identified liberal students say the First Amendment is outdated. . . .

From "Survey: 49% of College Students Feel ‘Intimidated’ When Expressing Beliefs Different From Professors" by Barbara Hollingsworth, CNSNews.com 10/27/15

The vast majority (95 percent) of students surveyed said that the issue of free speech is “important” to them, and 87 percent agree that listening to those with whom they disagree has educational value.

However, despite their strong support for free speech, a majority (51 percent) of students favor on-campus speech codes even though only one in 10 believes that colleges should regulate speech even more than they do now.

More than half (52 percent) of the students surveyed think that their college or university should forbid certain people with a history of “hate speech” from speaking on campus even though the same percentage also believes that the First Amendment does not make an exception for speech that some consider “hateful”.

And nearly three-quarters of student respondents (72 percent) favor disciplinary action for “any student or faculty member on campus who uses language that is considered racist, sexist, homophobic or otherwise offensive.”

From "College Students Say Campus Is Too PC, But Also Love Trigger Warnings" by Blake Neff, Reporter, Daily Caller 10/26/15

The survey also found that a whopping 63 percent of students support the use of “trigger warnings” by their professors in class. Triggers warnings are preemptive warnings given prior to some material (such as a discussion of racism) so that students can avoid being “triggered” and experiencing emotional trauma.

While a majority of respondents correctly said that the First Amendment protects hate speech just as it does other speech, a substantial 35 percent minority said otherwise, believing the First Amendment does nothing to protect hate speech. Some 21 percent of students even said the First Amendment is an “outdated” amendment that needs to be changed.

Unsurprisingly, there are differences among respondents based on their political leanings. Self-described liberals are three times as like (30 percent v. 10 percent) to describe the First Amendment as “outdated,” and 56 percent of them said their school newspaper should ban political cartoons that criticize certain religions and ethnic groups, while only 38 percent of conservatives felt the same way. Conservatives, though, are slightly more likely to support blocking speakers with a history of hate speech.

From "Ben Carson wants the government to monitor bias on college campuses. Can it?" by Philip Bump, Washington Post 10/26/15

Dr. Ben Carson, currently running in second for the Republican presidential nomination, told NBC's Chuck Todd on Sunday that he supports a system under which the government would investigate allegations of "extreme bias" on college campuses.

"The way that works," Carson explained, "is you invite the students at the universities to send in their complaints. And then you investigate." He later added, "It's not a violation of the 1st Amendment, because all I'm saying is taxpayer funding should not be used for propaganda. It shouldn't be."

At the end of that part of his conversation with Todd, Carson explained why he thought this was so important.

"[Y]ou have to be able to look at things from both sides," he said. "You have to be able to evaluate things in a very clear way. And if you're just always looking at things from one point of view, I don't think you're well-educated."

From "It’s Free Speech Week, and why some colleges hate it" by Hoppy Kercheval, West Virginia Metro News 10/29/15

The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) reports at least 240 instances within the last decade where students and/or faculty made concerted efforts to block speakers because they thought their views objectionable.

Just last week, the invitation to conservative author Suzanne Venker to speak at Williams College in Massachusetts was rescinded by the student group that invited her because other students objected to her controversial views on feminism. . . .

The First Amendment Center’s Gene Policinski said the political correctness of college campuses is depriving students of a valuable part of their education. “Eliminating the serendipity of discovering other viewpoints or the intellectual challenge of confronting persuasive views that differ from our own drains both the meaning and value of free speech.”

From "Free Speech suffers another setback" by Ashe Schow, Washington Examiner 10/29/15

Free speech has suffered a lot of setbacks in recent years. College campuses are setting up "free speech zones" that limit where students can express their opinions without the risk of offending their more thin-skinned classmates. Expressing an opinion online or telling a joke that's misinterpreted can actually get someone fired.

. . . almost any speech that anyone doesn't like can be brought for disciplinary action. Northwestern University professor Laura Kipnis learned that the hard way earlier this year when she was accused of violating the anti-discrimination law known as Title IX because she wrote an article critical of campus "paranoia."

The only way to stop the attacks on free speech is to stand up and refuse to be bullied. College campuses need to stop giving in to the most easily offended students, and organizations need to make clear that they will not stand down in face of adversity. Opinions that are merely unpopular (conservative students know this far too well) should not be shut down.

[In the past, DJJ] children have asked Mr. Wells if there was any hope for them in this life, and in the life to come.  He has told them without exception that Christ can, and would, forgive them, if they would repent and believe the gospel.  This message has given them hope, and many have told him this personally and in written correspondence.  Despite these facts, Superintendent [Gene] Wade has told Mr. Wells, on the basis of Policy 912, that if a child now asks questions of him on issues involving sexual activity, he may not discuss the same with them: “You can give a scripture reference to the kids, and let them look it up, but you can’t read it in their hearing. You can’t say “sinful;” you can’t discuss sexual orientation – heterosexual or homosexual - period.”

. . . By restricting speech which volunteers are allowed to use while ministering to youth detainees, the State of Kentucky and the Kentucky Department of Juvenile Justice have violated the protections given to private speech through the First Amendment and the Kentucky Constitution.  Policy 912 requires affirmation of homosexuality as a condition of providing spiritual guidance to troubled youth, and singles out a particular theological viewpoint as expressly disfavored by the State of Kentucky. This the State cannot do.

Houston Lesbian Mayor Subpoenas Pastors' Sermons

In May, Mayor Annise Parker of Houston, Texas heralded her personal victory as the city council passed a Gay Agenda ordinance against the will of the citizens, resulting in a popular petition drive to repeal the law.  In response, the city has embarked on a strong-arm intimidation strategy to muzzle the first amendment rights of Christians who advocated the petition and moral values.
“This is an attempt to chill pastors from speaking to the cultural issues of the day. The mayor would like to silence our voice. She’s a bully.”
-- Pastor Steve Riggle, Grace Community Church

“We’re not afraid of this bully. We’re not intimidated at all.”

-- From "City subpoenas pastors' sermons in equal rights ordinance case" by Katherine Driessen, Houston Chronicle 10/14/14

Houston's embattled equal rights ordinance took another legal turn this week when it surfaced that city attorneys, in an unusual step, subpoenaed sermons given by local pastors who oppose the law and are tied to the conservative Christian activists that have sued the city.

Opponents of the equal rights ordinance are hoping to force a repeal referendum when they get their day in court in January, claiming City Attorney David Feldman wrongly determined they had not gathered enough valid signatures to qualify for the ballot. City attorneys issued subpoenas last month during the case's discovery phase, seeking, among other communications, "all speeches, presentations, or sermons related to HERO, the Petition, Mayor Annise Parker, homosexuality, or gender identity prepared by, delivered by, revised by, or approved by you or in your possession."

The city attorney's office has not responded to requests for comment.

From "Houston subpoenas pastors’ sermons in fight over 'bathroom bill'" by Valerie Richardson, The Washington Times 10/14/14

Attorneys for several Houston pastors are challenging the city’s attempts to subpoena their sermons as part of a lawsuit against the recently passed transgender-rights law, also known as the “bathroom bill.”

Opponents of the ordinance, which forbids businesses open to the public from stopping individuals from using opposite-sex bathrooms if their gender identity doesn’t match their biological sex, filed a lawsuit in August challenging the city attorney’s ruling.

Alliance Defending Freedom [ADF] senior legal counsel Erik Stanley said the pastors subject to the city’s subpoenas are not party to the lawsuit.

“City council members are supposed to be public servants, not ‘Big Brother’ overlords who will tolerate no dissent or challenge,” said Mr. Stanley in a statement. “In this case, they have embarked upon a witch-hunt, and we are asking the court to put a stop to it.”

From "City of Houston demands pastors turn over sermons" by Todd Starnes, FoxNews.com 10/14/14

ADF, a nationally-known law firm specializing in religious liberty cases, is representing five Houston pastors. They filed a motion in Harris County court to stop the subpoenas arguing they are “overbroad, unduly burdensome, harassing, and vexatious.”

The pastors . . . were part of a coalition of some 400 Houston-area churches that opposed the ordinance. The churches represent a number of faith groups – from Southern Baptist to non-denominational.

Mayor Parker will not explain why she wants to inspect the sermons. . . . ADF attorney Stanley suspects the mayor wants to publicly shame the ministers. He said he anticipates they will hold up their sermons for public scrutiny. In other words – the city is rummaging for evidence to “out” the pastors as anti-gay bigots.

We can no longer remain silent. We must stand together - because one day – the government might come for your pastor.

Canada Holds American at Border for Being Christian

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) was tipped off by homosexualists that Peter LaBarbera, who heads Americans for Truth About Homosexuality (AFTAH), was bound from Chicago to the Regina airport en route to speak at the Saskatchewan Pro-Life Association (SPLA) conference in Weyburn.  When LaBarbera's plane landed Thursday night, customs officials detained him for several hours while they rifled through his luggage, books, paperwork, cellphone, computer files, and interrogated him about his Christian beliefs and alleged "hatred of gays" until 1am Friday morning.  Later that afternoon, LaBarbera was allowed a hearing to appeal the detention, which he won, and then proceeded to Weyburn (where angry homosexualists stood ready to "greet" him).

[Peter LaBarbera] was detained by the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA), and had his bags and laptop searched; the agency also watched a DVD of a speech he gave on Wednesday at a college in Dayton, Ohio, and looked at his website.

Earlier in a tweet posted after his release, LaBarbera said, after going through all his stuff and his website, “a preliminary decision was made to deny my entrance into Canada on the basis that my speech at the SPLA would violate Canada’s “Hate Propaganda” law (essentially the potential for “public incitement of hatred” against a group of people based on their “sexual orientation”).

“The Orwellian experience at Customs dragged on for more than three hours as a formal document was issued outlining my denial of entry under Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (citing the Hate Propaganda code). Finally, after 1 a.m., I was released pending my appeal of the decision today. My passport was seized until I arrive back at Customs today at noon for my appeal before a ‘minister’s delegate review’.”

From "Peter LaBarbera, anti-gay U.S. activist, allowed into Canada" posted at CBC News/Radio Canada 4/11/14

Peter LaBarbera, president of the group Americans For Truth About Homosexuality, said officials detained him because he planned to give a speech critical of "homosexual activism" and for a while it looked like he would be sent home on a plane.

LaBarbera's planned visit sparked an outcry around Saskatchewan earlier this month. Some say his anti-gay views constitute hate speech.

A protest had been planned in Weyburn for today, also organized by Intolerance-Free Weyburn.

In efforts to bar [LaBarbera's] speech, a petition by [pro-homosexual] Intolerance Free Weyburn has more than 1,300 signatures.

LaBarbera described Intolerance Free Weyburn as “cowardly” by lobbying the government to block a viewpoint.

“It’s the farthest thing from tolerance that I’ve ever seen,” he said. “Why can’t they just let the pro-life group have their speakers and then they can hold their own event?”

LaBarbera and [SPLA's Bill] Whatcott will informally address students at the U of R on Monday afternoon and the University of Saskatchewan on Tuesday.

Background on Bill Whatcott:
The Supreme Court of Canada unanimously ruled that citizens are NOT free to quote the Bible regarding the sin of homosexual behavior.  Bill Whatcott's pamphlets (from 2001) using the word "sodomites," and criticizing the Gay Agenda in public schools, were deemed to incite hatred against homosexual people.  The ruling requires Whatcott to pay a fine to two homosexuals who claimed to be offended, plus six-figure loser-pays legal costs.

From "Protesters promoting tolerance in community" by Natascia Lypny, The Regina Leader-Post 4/12/14

As the Saskatchewan Pro-Life Association (SPLA) prepared to welcome about 150 participants to its annual conference Friday afternoon, a couple blocks away members of the ad hoc Intolerance Free Weyburn group congregated in a square next to City Hall.

"They basically wanted us to be quiet. To not be talking about this issue," said SPLA president Marcy Millette.

At his speech this morning, LaBarbera intends to speak about the connections between the pro-life movement and homosexuality. It's a connection that sparked a close examination by some SPLA members, said convention organizer David Sidloski.

Sidloski, wary of LaBarbera's appearance on U.S. hate watch websites, investigated the speaker and phoned him up, a conversation he said convinced him LaBarbera is not a hateful man. Sidloski said his appearance at the convention is ultimately an opportunity to highlight the homosexuality-pro-life connection. For the City of Weyburn, it has sparked a different discussion: Which events the city will officially support. The council in February approved a $1,000 grant to the association through a program that encourages provincial and national events come to Weyburn.

The council will discuss at its meeting on Monday the possibilities of retracting the SPLA's grant, and rejigging the grant program policy.

From "US pro-family activist wins appeal; allowed to speak in Canada" by John-Henry Westen, LifeSiteNews.com 4/11/14

The formal document issued by CBSA agent Darren Banick for the initial denial of entry into Canada expressed concern that LaBarbera "may commit acts which would be against the Criminal Code of Canada."

Section 319(1) of Canada’s Criminal Code bars “public incitement of hatred … against any identifiable group where such incitement is likely to lead to a breach of the peace.” One of the categories of identifiable groups include those based on ‘sexual orientation’. Breaching the law carries a punishment of up to two years imprisonment.

Exemptions contained in the law include:
(a) if he establishes that the statements communicated were true;

(b) if, in good faith, the person expressed or attempted to establish by an argument an opinion on a religious subject or an opinion based on a belief in a religious text;

(c) if the statements were relevant to any subject of public interest, the discussion of which was for the public benefit, and if on reasonable grounds he believed them to be true

UPDATE 4/16/14: "Dialogue, controversy at Pro-Life conference" by Greg Nikkel, The Weyburn Review / S.E. Saskatchewan Booster

Just under 200 people attended the Saskatchewan Pro-Life Association’s annual conference, held at McKenna Hall on Friday and Saturday, with four keynote speakers, said organizer John Sidloski.

In a scrum with reporters, LaBarbera said, “It was a great crowd. We’re trying to show the issues of pro-life and defending marriage against the homosexual agenda are related. People who fought against same-sex marriage are fighting the same issues that pro-lifers faced.”

Asked about being accused of bringing a hate message here, LaBarbera said the protesters are trying to redefine the very term “hate”.

“What our message is, it’s okay to stand up for marriage between one man and one woman, to stand up for healthy identities. It’s okay to oppose homosexual behaviour, to oppose gay activism, and that’s just my moral belief. … The problem is the left, like this group Intolerance Free Weyburn, is defining hate by ideology, and therefore if you hold a position and dare to defend that position in public, you’re by definition a hater. That’s a new definition of hate. They also have a new definition of tolerance. Tolerance used to be me and you could disagree but we could have a civil discussion … so I would like us to return to the old definition of tolerance, which is me and the leader of this group could sit down have a discussion. I’m not going to try and ban him from speaking; he shouldn’t try to ban me.”

LaBarbera, 51, was questioned by Canadian border officials Tuesday morning following his arrest on the University of Regina campus a day earlier.

LaBarbera and fellow activist Bill Whatcott were escorted off university property and charged with mischief Monday afternoon.

UPDATE 4/15/14: "Whatcott, LaBarbera arrested" by Natascia Lypny, The Regina Leader-Post

Police arrested two anti-gay advocates after they refused to leave the University of Regina, where they had set up an anti-abortion display to hand out material about what they call the dangers of homosexual relationships.

"The materials were graphic and the materials were disturbing," said Thomas Chase, U of R provost and vice-president academic, after the two-hour ordeal had ended.

"The materials, we felt, could harm members of this campus community who we have a duty to protect and support."

Students in Regina had braced themselves for Bill Whatcott and Peter LaBarbera's visit to campus.

"I'm so saddened to hear we still have to discuss these things, these archaic views," said Rob Hillstead, a U of R filmmaking student and resident of Weyburn, who debated the pair.

"The idea that you can't have an open debate on homosexuality at a college campus and that some speech code is brought in to kick people off because they have a viewpoint that most students probably haven't heard - it seems to me it's pretty undemocratic," said LaBarbera . . .

UPDATE 4/14/14: "American pro-family activist LaBarbera arrested in Canada" by John-Henry Westen, LifeSiteNews.com

The pair were at the university with a poster depicting a child killed by abortion and a sign saying "sodomy is a sin."  A video of the incident shows that at first Whatcott was asked to leave the campus by campus security, who were accompanied by police. Whatcott responded that he had won two court cases on freedom of speech. “I do believe I have a charter right to speak here," he said.

Whatcott said that they would have to remove him from campus, because in addition to his charter right, he said, “I believe I have a moral responsibility to share the Gospel with these students.” He added, “I believe this university would not be as rich as it could be if it did not allow me to stay here and speak.”

LaBarbera, surrounded by police, can be heard on the video saying, “I would rather stay in solidarity with him,” referring to Whatcott. Then he too was arrested.

During Whatcott’s arrest a couple of students can be heard saying that he deserves freedom of speech. But many others, as the two are led away handcuffed, hoot cheers and clap.  Hate messages threatening Whatcott and LaBarbera with death can be read in tweets pointing to coverage of the arrest.

UPDATE 12/22/14: From "Whatcott, LaBarbera found not guilty" by Ashley Martin, Regina Leader-Post

Whatcott uttered "thank the Lord" after Judge Marylynne Beaton delivered her verdict.

LaBarbera, who lives in Illinois and heads Americans for Truth About Homosexuality, was not present, but "I'm sure he'll be relieved," said Whatcott.

"I find that the purpose of (their) attending the University of Regina was to communicate information and their actions were passive and non-aggressive," Beaton wrote. "The university's response was disproportionate to the peaceful distribution of flyers."

The police originally arrested the two men for assault by trespass, but that charge was determined to be defunct and mischief charges were laid instead later that same day.

Nun Blasted by NC Parents for Teaching Catholicism

After most of the 1,000 Charlotte, North Carolina parents who came to a special meeting lambasted the Charlotte Catholic High School for a speech by a visiting nun entitled "Masculinity and Femininity: Difference and Gift," the school's chaplain apologized. In her speech to students, Sister Jane Dominic Laurel, assistant professor of theology at Aquinas College in Nashville, TN explained Church teaching on marriage, divorce, parenting, etc. and provided empirical evidence and secular science concerning homosexuality.  Needless to say, the speech was NOT politically correct, and although Sr. Laurel has been forced on indefinite leave by the college, the bishop of the Charlotte diocese said the speech was theologically sound and presented accurate information.
"I understand that Sister used data from the Linacre Quarterly, a reputable journal, and from other sources.  That data can be debated and, in fact, is debated back and forth by scholars who are researching the areas of human sexuality. Because of the ongoing debate, it would have been better if these studies and data were omitted from the presentation to the students."

About half of the one-hour talk centered on homosexuality, according to a statement from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charlotte's official newspaper.

Some parents at the 1,400-student school say they wanted to know about the topic of the assembly ahead of time and would not have allowed their kids to stay.

After the talk, students launched a Change.org petition calling her talk "both offensive and unnecessarily derogatory." The petition, which has more than 4,000 signatures, didn't call for change but listed 10 objections to the talk.

A counter-petition supporting Laurel has collected more than 1,800 signatures. A message left at Laurel's office was not returned Wednesday.

Diocese spokesman David Hains acknowledged after the meeting that the Rev. Matthew Kauth, the school’s chaplain, apologized to the parents for a March 21 speech by Sister Jane Dominic Laurel that was not the one he expected her to give.

Hains also said the high school committed to developing new policies that would better scrutinize visiting speakers in the future. He said the school also wants to do a better job of communicating with parents ahead of time when such speeches will deal with sensitive subjects such as sexuality.

During her speech, Laurel quoted studies that said gays and lesbians are not born with same-sex attractions, and that children in single-parent homes have a greater chance of becoming homosexual, Hains and others said.

From "Charlotte diocese backs nun who gave school talk promoting Church teaching on homosexuality" by Kirsten Andersen, LifeSiteNews.com 4/7/14

After a public meeting with diocesan and school officials turned ugly, with parents and students alike shouting at administrators over what they perceived as “hateful” remarks criticizing homosexual behavior, divorce and extra-marital sex, a spokesman for the diocese told LifeSiteNews that the nun in question, Sr. Jane Dominic Laurel, did nothing wrong and will be welcome to speak on the issue again if she chooses.

“I was in attendance at the same presentation when given on Long Island, NY a few months ago,” Dr. Gerard Nadal told LifeSiteNews.  “In that meeting, Sister Jane gave medical and scientific data that came from reputable sources and were presented as examples of the consequences for human behavior that contravenes the moral magisterium of the Church. As a Ph.D. in medical science, and as a Catholic schooled extensively in my faith, I saw no contradictions, but rather a seamless presentation.”

The Diocese of Charlotte’s newspaper, the Catholic News-Herald, reported that the meeting was acrimonious, with those who dared to speak out in support of Sr. Laurel or the Church being shouted down by an angry mob.  The paper’s sources called the atmosphere “disrespectful” and “hate-filled.”

[Diocese of Charlotte Communications Director David] Hains said Bishop Peter Jugis is expected to make further public comment on the situation soon.

In an April 4 statement, the president of Aquinas College defended the school's curriculum and Sister Jane's credentials as a theologian, but acknowledged that the portion of Sister Jane's presentation of social science data about the alleged causes of same-sex attraction – which prompted many of the concerns from parents and students – was outside the scope of her academic background.

[At the contentious meeting,] Parents heard apologies and statements from Father Kauth, as well as from Father Roger Arnsparger, diocesan vicar of education, and Charlotte Catholic's dean of students and two assistant principals.

. . . many parents' emotions boiled over, with arguments even carrying over into the school's parking lot when the meeting ended after two hours. Two observers called the meeting's climate "disrespectful" and "hate-filled."

. . . His intention, Father Kauth explained, was to bring back a popular speaker to give a different voice on the topic of sexuality to students. Sister Jane's talk last fall at Charlotte Catholic was so well received, he said, that he invited her back to deliver a presentation to the entire school.

He defended Sister Jane's presentation on same-sex attraction as it related to Church teaching, but he distanced himself from the social science data she quoted as being appropriate for the forum of the student assembly.

From "Statement by Father Matthew Kauth, Chaplain of Charlotte Catholic High School"

. . . I heard Sister speak in the Fall at St Patrick’s. While I had given so many talks on this topic in so many different ways I found her approach just different enough - a new voice and the added perspective coming from a woman. I decided to bring her here. As you recall, I wanted the boys and girls separate and thought it would be a time for families to address these topics in a more intimate setting. . . . It was so well received that at the request of parents and students alike I decided to have her back for the whole school.

I asked her to give the same talk she gave while here before. By this time I had heard it 3 times. There was nothing in it which to my mind would require notification anymore than other assembly speakers we have had this year. However, Sister asked me a few days before the talk if it was ok for her to give a different talk. I asked why and she said it would be too difficult in that venue. I encouraged her to give the talk. The kids who had been there had even asked me if she was giving the same talk since they wanted their friends to hear it. Right before she began she asked me once again, are you sure you want me to give the same talk with the discussion on same - sex attraction? I said yes. Here is where two ships passed seemingly in the sunlight but actually in the night. What I didn’t know was that Sister has a section that she sometimes inserts into her talk that focuses on the leading studies of the CMA on same sex attraction. She simply assumed that is what I meant for her to do. Now I understand her initial hesitation. I didn’t know such a section existed. In that sense I was as stunned as anyone. I was not stunned by what she said per se as I had read similar things in various medical/theological journals. . . .

. . . Nothing in the Church’s teaching harms us - it gives life. Nevertheless those teachings if not transmitted in a way which is prudent, timely, and precise making the distinctions necessary can appear as a weapon of war and not a surgeon’s tool for healing. It was no one’s intention to do so - quite the opposite.

The Light has come into the world, St. John tells us, and the darkness has not overcome it, but sometimes it can be eclipsed by ignorance or by sinfulness. If in any of my sins I have eclipsed that truth - if I have been a momentary obstacle to His light for you or anyone else because of my weaknesses or sinfulness I am heart-fully sorry. Sister and I are both quite aware of the biblical admonition from our Lord about what happens if one leads a little one astray and I am not fond of the mixture of millstone and water. The intent is and has only been to shine so as to set them free. However to hide Christ’s saving teaching is also a means to lead them astray by allowing them to be led away by another - and as you know as parents, there are many who would take your children where you do not want them to go. Christ is light and in Him there is no darkness. His light sets us free to love as we were made to love - in the full dignity and beauty of the sons and daughters of God. His light also exposes and that can be painful. . . .
