D.C. Media Twist Prayer Event into Liberal Agenda

Thousands of praying Christians from hundreds of Bible-believing churches near Washington D.C., and from across the nation, gathered on Columbus Day at the Lincoln Memorial to pray to God for revival and to heal our land from its wayward path (2 Chron. 7:14), but the mainstream media reported that it was a gathering to promote an anything-but-biblical, liberal utopian worldview.

Ebola from God for Sin, Homosexuality: Say Clergy

Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf called for days of prayer and fasting as church leaders of Liberia, including the Archbishop of the Catholic Church of Liberia and the Liberian Council of Churches, declare that God has sent the Ebola disease to punish peoples and nations for unrepentant sin, including the sin of homosexuality.
"I call on all Liberians to observe three days of national fast and prayer to seek God's face to have mercy on us and forgive our sins and heal our land, Liberia, as we continue to fight against the deadly Ebola virus."

The Ebola pandemic — which has killed 887 in West Africa including 255 in Liberia — has terrified people so much that some local leaders discern divine meaning in it. According to Front Page Africa and the Daily Observer, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf called on Tuesday for all residents to fast for three days and pray for forgiveness.

That followed a recent recommendation by the Liberian Council of Churches, which said in a statement last week the outbreak has Biblical implications. “God is angry with Liberia,” the religious leaders said, according to the Daily Observer. “Ebola is a plague. Liberians have to pray and seek God’s forgiveness over the corruption and immoral acts (such as homosexualism, etc.) that continue to penetrate our society. As Christians, we must repent and seek God’s forgiveness.”

More than 100 Bishops, Pastors, General Overseers, Prophets, Evangelists and other Ministers of the Gospel, under the auspices of the Liberia Council of Churches (LCC), converged Wednesday at the edifice of the St. Stephen Episcopal Church on 10th Street in Sinkor, Monrovia, to deliberate on the Church’s role in and response to the Ebola epidemic.

The meeting was called by Archbishop Jonathan B.B. Hart, President of the LCC, who was also recently elected and enthroned Archbishop of the Internal Province of West Africa.

At the meeting were mainstream church leaders such as Archbishop of the Catholic Church of Liberia, Lewis Zeiglier, first vice president of the LCC, Rt. Reverend Dr. Kortu Brown, as well as representatives of other Christian associations with whom the LCC collaborated in organizing the meeting.

The Pentecostal Fellowship Union of Liberia, Liberia Fellowship of Full Gospel Ministers, Association of Evangelicals of Liberia, Prophetic Call to Ministers, Christian Community in Liberia, Apostolic World Christian Fellowship, were all represented.

Church Defeats Abortion in Colorado, Dems Concede

In Colorado, the first state to legalize abortion (1967), the Democrat-held legislature planned a covert preemptive strike against unborn children with the NARAL-supported Senate Bill 175, titled the Reproductive Health Freedom Act -- an all-encompassing, yet vaguely-worded bill intended to stop any future pro-life legislation. However, once Denver Archbishop Samuel J. Aquila brought the attack to light, and led Christians across the state in opposition, including a thousand-strong march at the statehouse, Democrats were forced to scuttle the mission.
“Too many times we have taken a back seat. Catholics, Christians and people of good will can no longer take a back seat. We are called to work for the good and for the true.”
-- Rev. Samuel J. Aquila, Archbishop of Denver

-- From "Senate Bill 175 withdrawn by Senate Democrats avoiding abortion debate" posted at KMGH-TV7 ABC (Denver, CO) 4/16/14

At least one Democrat had public concerns about the measure and all Republicans planned to vote against it. Democrats hold a slim one-seat majority in the Senate, so passage of the measure wasn't a sure thing.

Republicans and religious conservatives watching the debate applauded when Democrats abandoned the proposal. Opponents including the Catholic Archbishop of Denver feared the bill could threaten even basic health regulations on reproductive care.

From "Colorado Senate Democrats spike abortion bill" by Kurtis Lee, The Denver Post 4/16/14

All Senate Republicans, alongside the Archdiocese of Denver, denounced the legislation as "overreaching" and "ambiguous," saying the measure was not needed.

"It's a solution in search of a problem," said Sen. Bernie Herpin, R-Colorado Springs. "There is no one, no evidence, that has said there's a denial of things like contraception to women in Colorado."

Some GOP lawmakers criticized [Democrat Sen. Andy] Kerr's bill as political theater in an election year where the Jefferson County Democrat faces a tough re-election.

The proposal, written more like a resolution, offered limited details. For example, a section of the bill reads that the "state, its agencies, institutions, political subdivisions and units of local government shall not enact a policy regarding reproductive health care that is inconsistent with or interferes with access to information based on current evidence based scientific data and medical consensus."

From "Senate Democrats kill anti-Personhood proposal" by Eli Stokols, KDVR-TV31 (Denver, CO) 4/16/14

The abortion issue has long been a winner for Colorado Democrats . . .

Their proposal, the “Reproductive Health Freedom Act,” ostensibly sought to prevent any future challenges to abortion rights in the state — to do something impossible — in an effort to protect Colorado women from the kind of restrictive laws that have passed in other states: mandatory ultrasound requirements and impossible-to-meet clinic requirements.

On Wednesday night, with all 18 Democrats in the chamber, the bill was postponed indefinitely — killed, in a word — by the sponsor, who avoided what would have been a lengthy floor debate and blamed the decision on Republicans promising to filibuster the measure and bog down the Senate calendar.

Democrats also had to realize that politically this effort had backfired, riling up conservatives across the state at the end of a session that has been the opposite of last year’s, a session in which hardly any bill debated inside the Capitol drew much of a reaction outside the building.

From "CO Dems Abandon Abortion Bill After Archbishop Leads Rally at Statehouse" by Lauretta Brown, CNSNews.com 4/18/14

Although Democrats have a one-seat majority in the state Senate, fears arose that the bill would not pass after Senator John Kefalas (D-Fort Collins) - who had initially cast the deciding vote for the legislation in committee - expressed his misgivings, citing the huge public outcry.

Kefalas, a Catholic, says that he supports “a woman's right to make a decision,” but that he “had concerns about the outpouring that I heard from folks.”

“I'm not sure if it's the best tool for conveying the message which we wish to convey, which is that as Democrats, as with many people, [think] government should stay out of these things," Kefalas said in an interview with a local news station adding, “I'm also listening to folks that are reaching out to me.”

. . . after passing by just a one-vote margin (4-3) in the Senate Health and Human Services Committee, the bill stirred enormous opposition from pro-lifers, who said that it would block any future attempts to regulate abortion clinics, require parental notification before abortions were performed on minors, or force abortionists to show women ultrasound images of their babies so they could make an informed decision on whether to abort.

From "Radical abortion bill dies in Colo. Senate after call to prayer, action" posted at Catholic News Agency 4/16/14

Pro-abortion rights group NARAL Pro-Choice America, which backed the bill, had said that if it became law, it would have been the first of its kind in the country.

The legislation would have created a “fundamental right” to anything defined as “reproductive health care.” It would have barred state agencies and local government from having any policy that “denies or interferes with an individual’s reproductive health care decisions.”

Opponents had argued that the bill was vaguely worded and could have had far-reaching effects. They said it could have affected laws requiring parental involvement or notification for a minor who is seeking an abortion, as well as conscience protection laws and requirements that only licensed physicians can perform abortions.

From "Archbishop Aquila Leads Rally Against Colorado Abortion Bill" by Wayne Laugesen, National Catholic Register 4/16/14

Bill opponents crammed public areas of the Senate chambers and believe the outside protest, phone calls and high volume of visible opposition may have played a role in the delay.

And sources at the State Capitol indicated after the April 15 rally that at least two Democratic senators are now reconsidering their support for the bill.

Archbishop Aquila told protesters that senators were receiving so many calls they turned off their phones. Calls to a variety of senators April 15 went straight to voicemail boxes that were full.

Colorado Attorney General John Suthers, a devout Catholic, concurs with critics who say the law is so vague it would cause an assortment of unintended consequences — including legal challenges to laws that mandate health-care providers report suspected sexual abuse of children.

America Going to Hell; Christians Lose Convictions

When Christian Americans survey the surrounding culture in decay, the finger of blame must be directed to the failure of too many Christians to live by Biblical convictions, and especially the failure of church leaders.  God's judgement on such a wayward nation is inevitable and is plainly visible today.

Will Christians take personal risks, and will churches risk criticism by the PC police, likely causing a loss of donations, in order to steer America back in the right direction?

Full sermon by Dr. Charles Stanley (HD video)

-- From "The Courage to Stand by Your Convictions" by Dr. Charles Stanley of In Touch Ministries 2/16/14

A conviction is a belief that is considered true and worthy of maintaining regardless of the consequences.

However, today we live in a generation that is being persuaded that there are no absolute moral truths. Instead of relying upon the truths in the Bible, each person is left to decide what is right in his own eyes. Because there are no standards, our society has become ungodly, immoral, unsafe, and worthy of God’s judgment. We need to turn from this dangerous situation and stand firmly, without compromise, for our biblical beliefs.

[As the Bible shows,] Daniel is a perfect example of a man who lived according to his strong scriptural convictions. He was willing to stand for them even when doing so could have cost him his life.

Courage is needed to fulfill God’s assignments for our lives.

Daniel’s determination to live in obedience to the Lord set an example for the other Jewish youths who were living in that heathen society. . . . Daniel could not be bought off or frightened into compromise because he had nothing to fear as long as his convictions were founded on God’s Word. . . . He didn’t just know the Word and love the Lord; he proved it with his obedience.

As believers, we make an impact in others’ lives by [boldly] living for Christ without compromising our values.

God is looking for people like Daniel—followers of Christ who will stand by their godly convictions, even in the face of threat or temptation to compromise for profit. Use your God-given convictions to guide your actions.

UPDATE: 2/21/14 From "Where are all the godly men?" by Jason K. Allen, president of Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Mo.

Given the complexity of modern ministry, many churches prioritize giftedness and experience above godliness in their candidates for ministry. Churches often look for competent administrators, capable speakers, polished people skills, a cute family and other secondary concerns before assessing the heart. Like ancient Israel, we have the propensity to look on the outward; all the while God looks on the heart.

. . . The "peer pressure" of ministry is oriented toward events, products, conferences and materials. It is as though the paraphernalia and garnishes of ministry have displaced the more biblical and eternal aspects, like godliness.

. . . Clearly, the New Testament prioritizes godliness in the life of the minister. The qualifications for ministry found in 1 Timothy 3:1–7 and Titus 1:6–9 deal almost exclusively with character, with little reference to giftedness beyond the ability to teach. Thus the timeless ministerial admonition, "Beware of letting your talent gain you a ministry position that your character cannot keep you in."

. . . Perhaps revival will not arrive in the pew until it first arrives in the pulpit. It may well be that the greatest need of the church is godly men who shepherd the flock of God with holiness and grace.

UPDATE 3/27/15: From "A Call to Prayer" by Dr. Charles Stanley, In Touch Ministries (watch the full sermon video)

We are living in one of the most dangerous periods in history. Every day we see more crime and corruption, and the effects of a growing hatred toward the things of God. But because of our Lord’s faithful promises, there is always hope.

Dr. Stanley reminds us that It is only when we seek God, turn from our sin, and submit to His will that our nation—and our world—will be free. As we spend time with the Lord each day, we must remember to pray with passion and perseverance for our churches, our country’s leaders, and the challenges facing our nation. And let’s remember to thank our heavenly Father for His love and His willingness to heal our land.

Ask God to intervene to protect children, biblical marriages, and relieve those trapped in poverty.

IL Black Churches, RC Diocese Block 'Gay Marriage'

After the Illinois legislature, packed with Democrats, were unable to pass a same-sex "marriage" bill in May 2013 (for which the Democrat governor has pleaded), homosexualists targeted this past week for passage of the bill.  However, once again, Illinois church leaders stood in the way of abomination (a.k.a. Pastors, Christian activists and others addressed a crowd clustered on the first floor of the Capitol rotunda, some peering down from the second and third floor rails, a day after gay marriage proponents held their own event to urge lawmakers to approve it.

"Defend Marriage Lobby Day" —sponsored by the Illinois Family Institute began Wednesday with a morning prayer service outside the state Capitol. The secretary of state's police put number of attendees at 2,500—slightly smaller than the estimate from Tuesday's event.

Pastors from several of the area's black mega-churches are trying to help blunt gay marriage advocates' work to clinch a handful more "yes" votes to secure passage of the measure in the House.

Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan said just weeks ago that about a dozen votes were still needed for the legislation's passage.

On Tuesday, [Springfield's Catholic] Diocese head, Bishop Thomas Paprocki, barred any pro-gay marriage activists wearing rainbow sashes from attending a Mass. [Diocese Monsignor Carl] Kemme called Springfield a "fearless defender of the traditional definition of marriage."

“May all recognize that marriage between one man and one woman is the foundation of our society and that marriage as such is essential for the common good,” said Monsignor Carl Kemme of the Springfield Catholic Diocese, as he led a prayer at the rally that filled the rotunda and had people watching over railings from the second and third floors of the building.

Senior Pastor Mark Johnson of Calvary Temple Christian Center in Springfield got applause when he said, "I am against same-sex marriage because I love people."

The rally came a day after a rally and march outside the capital by advocates of making same-sex marriage legal in Illinois. Advocates of that change, a form of which passed the Senate in February, hope for a House vote during this fall’s veto session.

“The Rainbow Sash Movement has encouraged Roman Catholics to come to Springfield to ‘have a loud Catholic presence for marriage equality,” said Bp. Paprocki in the video.  “They have announced plans to gather at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception at 4:30 p.m., just before the 5:15 p.m. Mass [on Oct. 22], to stand in the Cathedral and indicate that they are there to pray the rosary for ‘marriage equality.’”

“It is blasphemy to show disrespect or irreverence to God or to something holy,” said the bishop. “Since Jesus clearly taught that marriage as created by God is a sacred institution between a man and a woman (see Gospel of Matthew 19:4-6 and Mark 10:6-9), praying for same-sex marriage should be seen as blasphemous, and as such will not be permitted in the cathedral.”

In closing his video statement, Bishop Paprocki said, “Of course, our cathedral and parish churches are always open to everyone who wishes to repent their sins and ask for God’s forgiveness.”

The Catholic Church teaches that marriage was set by nature and God as being between one man and one woman. “Marriage is a basic human and social institution,” states the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).  “Though it is regulated by civil laws and church laws, it did not originate either from the church or the state, but from God. Therefore, neither church nor state can alter the basic meaning and structure of marriage.”

UPDATE 11/1/13: From "How Illinois gay marriage fight pitted Obama against black pastors in Chicago" by Peter Wallsten, Washington Post

. . . On its face, the [gay marriage legislation] seemed like a sure bet in Democrat-dominated Springfield. Gay rights activists filled the House chamber on the legislature’s final day in session in May anticipating a historic victory. Obama, the former Illinois senator, had mentioned the pending House vote during a fundraising stop in Chicago that week, saying: “I just want to say for the record it’s something that I deeply support.”

“There is all due respect to the president, but your influence only goes so far,” one skeptical lawmaker, Rep. Monique Davis (D), said over the summer, “especially when the caucus perceives that it, too, has some big issues no one is thinking about. Their children are dying [in widespread Chicago violence].”

Obama “has tremendous sway in Chicago,” [mega-church pastor James T.] Meeks said in an interview over the summer. “However, on this issue, I think people had made up their minds.”

Obama’s largely passive role in the Illinois debate was an early indicator that his declining clout may have been extending even into the state capital where his political career was born.

God Intervenes to Preserve Marriage in Illinois

In a state where liberal Democrats have a stranglehold on government, and where most Republicans are liberal as well, a diverse Christian coalition convinced a majority of legislators to oppose a same-sex "marriage" bill, even though they easily passed a same-sex civil unions law just two years ago.
"Today our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ has won!  Pastor James Meeks, Bishop Lance Davis and I are so proud of the God fearing Black Caucus [Illinois legislature] members who withstood the pressure of the LGBT forces and allowed God's word concerning marriage to remain between one man and one woman in Illinois."

The Illinois House adjourned Friday without voting on same-sex marriage legislation, meaning gay and lesbian couples in Illinois anxious to tie the knot will have to keep waiting.

Supporters had all the reason to be optimistic back when the historic measure passed out of the Senate 34-21 on Valentine’s Day. Since then, however, the bill remained stalled in the House . . .

The upset for gay-marriage supporters comes just two years after lawmakers narrowly approved civil unions in 2011, giving same-sex couples state-level legal recognition and health care benefits similar to those of married couples.

While civil unions give couples some benefits, such as automatic hospital visits, and adoption and parental rights, gay and lesbian couples have argued they remain second-class citizens in the eyes of the state without the right to marry.

Harris announced he'd put off a vote until November. He said lawmakers appear to be more likely to sign off then.

Stubborn resistance within the House Black Caucus, a 20-member bloc of African-American lawmakers who have faced a withering lobbying blitz against the plan from black ministers, has helped keep Harris’ legislation in check, with several House members still undecided.

“The sense I have is blacks are tired of being lobbied or targeted. They’ve kind of turned back on some of the advocates and lobbyists and are asking, ‘Why don’t you get some Republicans?’” one high-level Democratic insider said Friday.

Two House Republicans have publicly endorsed the legislation, Rep. Ed Sullivan (R-Antioch) and Rep. Ron Sandack (R-Downers Grove). A likely third GOP supporter, Rep. Jim Durkin (R-Westchester), switched to a no as he contemplated a possible run for House Republican leader.

From "Gay marriage bill fails to go to vote in Illinois House" by Monique Garcia, Rex W. Huppke and Cynthia Dizikes, Chicago Tribune reporters 6/1/13

Illinois had appeared poised to become the 13th state to approve same-sex marriage. Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn promised to sign the bill. Democrats held veto-proof majorities in the House and Senate. President Barack Obama called for its passage during a Thursday night fundraiser in his home city, and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel was a major backer as well.

While advocates have brought forth a lengthy lineup of religious [leftist] leaders who endorse gay marriage, Catholics and conservative African-American church groups have provided fierce opposition. They argue that same-sex marriage violates the basic tenets of the Bible, which call for marriage to be only between a man and a woman.

"This was a recipe for disaster from the beginning, because when Rep. Harris introduced the bill, there were no African-American or Latino co-sponsors on it," said Rick Garcia, political director of the Civil Rights Agenda. "And the problem we have now was among the black caucus."

But Democratic Rep. Ken Dunkin, chair of the Legislative Black Caucus, said the blame shouldn't fall on a bloc of 20 legislators, arguing that more support must come from Downstate, rural and suburban lawmakers.

Opponents of the legislation — which included some of the most powerful religious leaders in the state — have said the bill would force religious organizations to allow same-sex marriage ceremonies in their fellowship halls, parish centers and sanctuaries. The bill, however, states that churches are immune from being sued should they refuse to provide their religious facilities to celebrate a same-sex wedding. The American Renewal Project, an arm of the conservative American Family Association, is launching “Pastors and Pews,” which will offer policy briefings to church leaders and their congregations in hopes of encouraging Christians to become more politically active amid years of declining turnout among voters of faith.

The group’s efforts come after former Christian Coalition head Ralph Reed led an effort to drive up voter turnout among faith voters during the 2012 election. His group, the Faith & Freedom Coalition, said evangelical voters made up 27 percent of the voting electorate—a number that was far better than the turnout in the 2008 election, but which still wasn’t enough to help Republican Mitt Romney win the White House.

More than 400 pastors and their spouses will be on hand. . . . speakers include Congressman Steve King, Kansas Governor Sam Brownback, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, former Congressman J.C. Watts, Congressman Tom Latham and David Barton of WallBuilders.

The American Renewal Project is housed within the American Family Association and in the past, the group has been extremely active and successful. They played an instrumental role in rallying Christians to support California’s Proposition 8, which affirmed traditional marriage. They played a significant role in removing Iowa’s three Supreme Court judges who ruled to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act. They have also been very vigorous in presidential politics; with top Republican candidates speaking at their pastor policy briefings in key swing states like Iowa and South Carolina.

. . . That issue also arose in the run-up to the 2012 election as many evangelicals were disenchanted with the moral positions of candidates on abortion, marriage and other social issues.

In fact, WND columnist Chuck Norris pointed out his concerns, calling on evangelical Christians to join him in crushing the creep of socialism under Barack Obama.

“We are here to talk about a growing concern we all share,” Chuck Norris explained. “If we look to history, our great country and freedom are under attack. We’re at a tipping point and, quite possibly, our country as we know it may be lost forever if we don’t change the course in which our country is headed. . . . And it is because of that we can no longer sit quietly or stand on the sidelines and watch our country go the way of socialism or something much worse.”

The theme of this year’s Presidential Inaugural Prayer Breakfast was II Chronicles 7:14, which places the burden of a nation’s restoration not on its leadership, its politicians, its military, its social programs, its economy or any of the typical power sources.

It puts the responsibility on Christians: “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

Biblical Prayer Stricken from Obama Inauguration

Not only was the token Evangelical pastor, Louie Giglio, booted from the official presidential inauguration event, such that nothing but liberal compromisers of Biblical Truth will now be seen and heard, but Obama followers have demanded that an unaffiliated/unofficial prayer breakfast on inauguration day organized by Christians be denounced and boycotted.

President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden plan to attend the 57th Presidential Inaugural Prayer Service, an official event, at the National Cathedral in Washington at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. It is an interfaith service of prayers, readings, and music. The sermon will be delivered by the Rev. Adam Hamilton, senior pastor of the Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kan., the largest United Methodist church in the nation.

Others participating in the official prayer service are the Very Rev. Gary Hall, who is dean of the cathedral, seat of the Episcopal Church; the Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori, presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church; the Right Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, and the Rev. Serene Jones, president of Union Theological Seminary in New York City.

At 7 a.m. at the Washington Marriott Wardman Park hotel, the Presidential Inaugural Prayer Breakfast Committee, which includes hostess Merrie Turner and the chaplain of the House of Representatives, the Rev. Patrick J. Conroy, will begin the four-hour event. The speaker is the Rev. Jonathan Cahn, senior pastor and messianic rabbi of the Jerusalem Center/Beth Israel Messianic Congregation in Wayne, N.J., and president of Hope of the World Ministries, which calls itself “an end-time ministry for an end-time world.”

On Monday, January 21st, Inauguration Day ordinary Americans will gather with Pastors, Clergy, Lay Leaders, Congressmen, Senators, Ambassadors, and Diplomats to pray for the Nation and the Office of the Presidency. The Presidential Inaugural Prayer Breakfast Committee, consisting of hostess Rev. Merrie Turner, Fr. Patrick J. Rabbi Jonathan Cahn, best-selling author of "The Harbinger," is the key note speaker whose topic is the prophetic destiny of America. On Inauguration Day, another clear sign of the times will be found in a hotel away from official events. "The Presidential Inaugural Prayer Breakfast" will feature the Rev. Pat Robertson, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, Missouri Sen. Roy Blunt and others. The keynote speaker is expected to discuss the prophetic destiny of America.

Efforts by the Presidential Inaugural Committee to bridge the conservative-liberal divide by including an evangelical failed. Atlanta preacher Louie Giglio, known for his work to end human trafficking, withdrew from giving the benediction after the liberal group ThinkProgress found a sermon he gave in the 1990s, condemning gay relationships.

A headline on PewSitter.com, which posts news of interest to conservative Roman Catholics, read, "Obama to Use Civil Rights Activist and Not Clergy" for his inaugural invocation. Gabe Lyons, a young Christian thinker known for his pioneering Q conferences on evangelicalism, argued Giglio had been bullied off the stage by an "extreme minority" of activists.

. . . Darrell Bock, a New Testament scholar at the evangelical Dallas Theological Seminary, argued the inaugural is supposed to unite Americans across partisan lines after an election. "The problem here is if we're going to celebrate the diversity of America, which is what the inaugural representatives claim they're doing, we shouldn't have a litmus test applied to participants if it's also being recognized they are contributing in other ways to society," Bock said.

A “faith” organization [Faithful America] that gets money from “Open Society” founder and left-leaning 1 percenter George Soros says it doesn’t want chaplains to participate in a prayer meeting.

The online effort, which had gathered a little more than 100 signatures by Friday afternoon, said, “The hateful views of Pat Robertson, Joseph Farah, and Jonathan Cahn are deeply offensive to Christians across America. Please don’t spend Inauguration Day lending the prestige of your offices to their lies and conspiracy theories targeting President Obama.”

It is addressed to Rev. Patrick J. Conroy, chaplain, U.S. House of Representatives, and Barry C. Black, chaplain, U.S. Senate, who like hundreds – in fact thousands – of others from around Washington are invited to the events.

The theme of the presidential prayer event is to be II Chronicles 7:14: “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

From "Senate Chaplain Won't Attend Controversial Inaugural Prayer Breakfast" by Elizabeth Flock, U.S.News & World Report 1/18/13

Senate Chaplain Rev. Barry Black will no longer attend an inaugural prayer breakfast being hosted by religious conservatives, after a petition criticizing the event garnered thousands of signatures online.

House Chaplain Rev. Patrick J. Conroy, however, will attend the event. His office says the Jesuit priest will deliver a quick prayer, and won't "stay too long."

The breakfast, which will take place just hours before President Barack Obama is publicly into office Monday, features special guests Pat Robertson, a televangelist whose commentary has managed to offend gays, Haitians and feminists alike, Jonathan Cahn, a preacher who believes some of Obama's actions are apocalyptic, and Joseph Farah, the editor of WorldNetDaily who has long pushed the birther conspiracy theories about the president's citizenship.

Black, a former chief of U.S. Navy chaplains, previously dropped out an evangelical conference in 2007 after he was pictured next to conservative columnist Ann Coulter in promotional material, the New York Times reported. The Senate Chaplain said at the time he felt his appearance would conflict with the job's "historic tradition of being nonpolitical, nonpartisan, nonsectarian."

From "Washington plans meeting to call on God" by Bob Unruh, World Net Daily 1/14/13

[Key note speaker, Rabbi Jonathan] Cahn’s message to America is to heed warnings from God, turn back to seeking His will, and prosper.

He doesn’t say it, but there’s definitely an “or else” implied, as described in his book, which recounts God’s warnings, or harbingers, to the nation of Israel before it eventually was broken up and taken into captivity by enemies.

Israel suffered, he posits, because it vowed to go it alone, without God, and come back bigger and stronger and better after being ravaged by its enemies. Cahn’s book warns that America right now is experiencing the same judgments, or warnings, from God and needs to heed them immediately.

He documents a series of stunning parallels between the Old Testament collapse of Israel and events in the United States, specifically the 9/11 attacks, the construction on the Ground Zero site and the economic crisis.

Atheists Condemn Kansas Gov. for Acting Christian

The Americans United for Separation of Church and State has expressed outrage at Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback for participating in a Christian event in Topeka called ReignDown USA that took place just yards from the governor’s mansion.  In Brownback's official proclamation of that "Day of Restoration," he called Christians to repentance in response to God's judgment on America as a sinful nation.

Brownback talked for about 10 minutes and said he turned to religion in 1995 when was diagnosed with cancer. He ended his time on stage praying for forgiveness of his sins and for the sins of others.

God Hears Thousands Praying for America, Media Doesn't

If a tree falls in the forest . . . or . . . If over ten thousand Christians pray on the streets of Philadelphia but there's zero media there, do they make a noise?
America for Jesus, a coalition of ministries, has organized prayer assemblies across America calling for Christians to take seriously 2 Chronicles 7:14 and pray for revival and even for a Third Great Awakening.
"America is in a state of emergency evidenced by widespread moral depravity and economic meltdown. There is only one remedy; we need to renew our covenant with God. We are calling America back to God and proclaiming liberty and freedom over our nation."
-- Anne Gimenez, National Chairperson, America for Jesus

“We have to be salt and light. We have to redirect this country back toward the light as people of God.”
-- Governor Rick Perry (R-Texas)

“America’s ultimate hope doesn’t rest with the president but with God. Its ultimate problem isn’t political but spiritual. However, the political realm affects every other and holds a critical place. The Scriptures record that unrighteous and ungodly leaders can lead a nation away from God and to judgment, while righteous and godly leaders can lead a nation to restoration. America is at a critical juncture.”

The question is, Prayer in America: Hidden Faith, or Public?

-- From "Robertson: This is Jesus' nation" by United Press International 9/29/12

Thousands of people packed a prayer rally at Philadelphia's Independence Mall Saturday where evangelist Pat Robertson declared "this nation belongs to Jesus."

"I don't care what the ACLU says or any atheist says, this nation belongs to Jesus," Robertson said.

The rally was part of a two-day event organized by a coalition of ministries called One Nation under God.

The group is calling for 40 days of prayer leading up to the presidential election.

From "Robertson, Perkins speak at prayer rally in Philly" by MaryClaire Dale, Associated Press 9/29/12

[Family Research Council president Tony] Perkins asked the crowd to pray for elected officials including Obama.

Speakers throughout the day condemned abortion, gay marriage and population control as practiced by Planned Parenthood. Christian rock music filled the historic mall as speakers challenged the crowd to overcome the seven deadly sins: pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath and slothfulness.

The rally was held outside of Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was signed. Pennsylvania is also where evangelist George Whitefield preached during the first Great Awakening, the 18th-century religious revival that spread through the American colonies.

Organizers plan another prayer rally Oct. 20 in Washington, D.C., two weeks before President Barack Obama faces Republican Mitt Romney in the presidential election.

Christian conservatives who blame "moral depravity" for everything from the recession to terrorism are converging on Philadelphia for a rally they hope will spark a religious revival as Election Day nears.

John Blanchard, national coordinator for "America for Jesus 2012," said the two-day event starting Friday night is nonpartisan. It's modeled after the 1980 "Washington for Jesus" rally, considered a pivotal show of organizational strength by the then-fledgling Christian right. Bishop Anne Gimenez, whose late husband John helped lead the 1980 assembly, is a lead organizer of the Philadelphia gathering.

David Barton, a self-taught historian who emphasizes the Christian roots of the U.S., is another rally supporter. Barton wrote in a Feb. 29 article that Obama has shown "hostility toward Biblical people of faith" while giving "preferential treatment" to Muslims.

From "Family Research Council's Perkins Launches '40 Days to Save America' Campaign" by Troy Anderson, Newsmax 9/24/12

Today, the United States faces multiple crises — a potential economic collapse, moral disintegration, growing secular humanism, attacks on religious liberty, a spate of historic natural disasters, and a severe drought, according to “40 Days to Save America.”

These crises — together more daunting than those Americans faced in 1776, 1863, and 1941— are beyond the power of human beings to resolve without divine intervention — and “nothing short of a Third Great Awakening can save us,” according to the campaign.

. . . faith leaders are calling on pastors, priests, and rabbis to open their churches and synagogues for 40 days of prayer and fasting. They are also calling for “Christian and Jewish voters to make informed choices, voting not as Republicans or Democrats, but as followers of the living God.”

"Satan runs across the world with his doubt and his untruths and what have you, and one of the untruths out there (that) is driven is that people of faith should not be involved in the public arena," Perry said.

"And it falls on us. I mean we truly are Christian warriors, Christian soldiers, and it's for us as Americans to stand our ground and to firmly send a message to Washington that our nation is about more than some secular laws and activist courts," he added

Prayer Needed - Government Isn't the Solution

Consider any perceived "problem" in America: What our nation desperately needs is for Christians to humble before the Almighty God, seek His face, repent of our sins, and beg Him to forgive our apathy, and to heal our land.

The nation’s leaders might want to consider seriously the nation’s faith life in light of the natural disasters, drought, record heat, economic failings and violence, such as the Colorado theater rampage, that have dominated the news cycle in recent days, not dismiss it flippantly.

That’s according to Publisher Dr. Anthony Harper of InterMountain Christian News.

He was the reporter at the White House daily news briefing Wednesday when Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack responded to a question with the reference to daily prayers for rain for the nation.

Vilsack, accompanying White House press secretary Jay Carney to the briefing, responded, “Well, I can only speak for myself. I get on my knees every day and I’m saying an extra prayer now. If I had a rain prayer or rain dance I could do, I would do it. But honestly, right now the focus needs to be on working with Congress – they have the capacity to help these producers by creating greater flexibility to programs, providing us some direction in terms of whatever disaster assistance can be provided. Those are the kinds of things we’re focused on.”

Barack Obama did lead in a moment of silence, during which there undoubtedly were many prayers offered, on Friday over the shooting rampage in Colorado where 12 were killed and another 59 were wounded.

Christians Pray for Detroit, Others Condemn Prayers

Tens of thousands of Christians assembled at Detroit's Ford Field stadium in prayer for Jesus Christ to bless the troubled city, but Muslims, liberals, and the media derided the event as intolerant and hateful because of TheCall organizers' belief in the Bible.

Speaking to thousands inside Ford Field, the controversial leader of a 24-hour prayer rally in Detroit called Friday evening for Jesus to rule over Detroit, Dearborn and America. Otherwise, he warned, the U.S. will fall into ruin.

"We need Jesus' face to appear all across America," Lou Engle thundered to a cheering crowd at TheCall, a movement that has drawn criticism.

"Their message is not one of inclusion; it's of hate," said Jennifer Teed of Detroit, who opposed Engle's prayer event. "I don't see how that's religious."

"We believe that God wants to raise up a new worship sound out of Detroit," said Engle, who is based in Kansas City, Mo., at the International House of Prayer.

As people poured into the rally, a vocal but respectful crowd of about 50 people held signs that said "Love thy Neighbor" and "Pro-woman, Pro-Family, Pro-Choice" and chanted against hate and bigotry. They departed after about an hour.

Other local ministers like Bishop Wayne T. Jackson of Great Faith Ministries on the city's west side said they met with Engle Thursday night and "we are going to walk in love" to the event.

"I know people are getting confused about the rumors out there…And we know there's word out there in the Muslim community that we're coming out against them, but we're not," he said.

"This is not anti-anything. This city needs healing. We are praying that Muslims will convert because we believe Christ is the way," he said. "We pray that people will come to the cross. We pray that Buddhists will come to the cross, that everyone can come to the cross."

The event kicked off Friday night with participants fasting, praying and singing at Ford Field. With no big name bands or speakers, the event was touted as a solemn assembly, rather than a festival, where worshippers seek God.

The Pentecostal-style event consisted of worshipping and praying. Some participants opted to rest during some part of the 24 hours while others chose to stick it out all the way until the end – 6 p.m. Saturday.

Pastor Barbara J. Yoder, founding apostle and senior pastor of Shekinah Christian Church in Ann Arbor, Mich., stood on stage in the final hours of the event to motivate and challenge the city.

Matt Peyerk, 25, a member of Oakland Christian Church in Oakland Township, attended the Call . . .

“Issues like abortion, righteousness and justice in the social system were talked about. That’s about it,” Peyerk said. “Nothing has been mentioned about Islam. There hasn’t been a lot of talk devoted to it. We don’t hate the Muslims. We love them. We prayed for the Muslims and Arab people.”

Peyerk said a former terrorist spoke at the Call. “He was in a position of bringing harm to American people. He converted. For me, that was the most powerful part of the Call. He was apologizing on behalf of all terrorists,” Peyerk said.

Waterford resident Amy Maggi Terao said, “Apparently they speak about the terrorist attacks that root from Islam, which is an attack from Satan. This is just one part of their preaching, which if you ask me is relative to the times right now. Unfortunately, Muslims may be offended. It's kind of like when ‘Christians’ bomb abortion clinics and Christians get the bad rap.”

“In my opinion, I didn’t hear any anti-Islam rhetoric or anything like that,” Maccabees says. “We’re all God’s children, all Abe’s children at the end of the day.”

Gerrit Anderson came from Lansing to pray for Detroit and Michigan.

“It seems like the Lord’s anointing on Detroit, that he wants to move this city for some reason,” Anderson says. “Kind of taking a broken city and reviving it, and showing that picture to the nation. That he longs for America to come back to him, and to his love.”
