Illinois Fines Business $80K for Being Christian

Jim and Beth Walder, the owners of Timber Creek Bed & Breakfast near Paxton, Illinois, have been fined $80,000 by the state Human Rights Commission after being singled out in 2011 by homosexual men demanding their same-sex ceremony be officiated in the Walder's facility.  The Commission ordered the Walders to "cease and desist" from quoting the Bible to same-sex couples and welcome ceremonies of abomination in their facility in accordance with the Human Rights Act and pay the homosexuals $30,000 plus another $50,000 to the ACLU for legal fees.
"To be absolutely clear, we cannot host a same-sex wedding even though fines and penalties have been imposed by the Illinois Human Rights Commission. Our policy will not be changing. . . . We are not looking for a fight, but when immoral laws are purposely passed (or deemed constitutional) that blatantly conflict with God's Word and when the heavy hand of government tries to force us as Christians to embrace sinful behavior, we have a moral obligation to resist and stand for Biblical truth:  'It is better to obey God than men.' Acts 5:29."
-- Jim Walder

-- From "Illinois inn fined for refusing to host gay civil union ceremony" by Reuters 3/29/16

[Michael R. Robinson, an] administrative law judge with the [Illinois] commission ordered TimberCreek Bed & Breakfast to pay $15,000 each to Todd and Mark Wathen for emotional distress.

TimberCreek, located about 100 miles south of Chicago, must also pay $50,000 in attorneys' fees and $1,218.35 in costs.

The Wathens had contacted TimberCreek in 2011 as they looked for possible locations for the ceremony.

TimberCreek owner Jim Walder had responded to the Wathens' inquiry with an email that said "homosexuality is immoral and unnatural," according to the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois.

From "B&B ordered to pay $80,000 over refusal to host civil-union ceremony in 2011" by Will Brumleve, Editor, Ford County Record, posted at Champaign/Urbana News-Gazette 3/29/16

In September, [Judge] Robinson ruled that Jim Walder violated the civil rights of the Wathens when he denied them the opportunity to hold their civil-union ceremony at the B&B he co-owns with his wife — the TimberCreek Bed-and-Breakfast west of Paxton.

The landmark ruling marked the first time that the Human Rights Commission made clear that businesses in Illinois must serve the entire public and cannot pick and choose based on their personal religious views.

Following a public hearing held last November in Springfield to consider damages to be awarded to the couple, ACLU attorneys for the Wathens filed briefs to support the couple's request for a "cease and desist" order and for Walder to pay damages for emotional distress, attorneys' fees and costs. Lawyers for the B&B failed to respond in a timely matter, leading to the judge's ruling.

The Wathens said they never contacted another B&B [other than Walder's]. They ended up being wed in a small ceremony on June 4, 2011, in their back yard . . .

Walder said in an emailed statement Tuesday that his B&B will not host civil-union ceremonies or same-sex weddings, regardless of last week’s ruling.
“Evidently, religious freedom does not exist within the Illinois Religious Freedom Protection and Civil Union Act or the Illinois Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act.

“In our opinion, neither the state of Illinois nor the U.S. Supreme Court has the authority to tamper with the definition of marriage. God alone created marriage and declared thousands of years ago that it was to be between a man and a woman. Not two men. Not two women. We may be out of step with an increasingly anti-Christian culture, but we are in compliance with God’s design, and that is what ultimately matters.”

From "Further refusals could cost B&B owner more; he won't change stance" by Nicole Lafond, Champaign/Urbana News-Gazette 4/1/16

University of Illinois law Professor Robin Wilson, an expert on the intersection of religious freedom and same-sex marriage, said the penalties the state could impose upon TimberCreek Bed-and-Breakfast owner Jim Walder include placing a lien on his personal estate.

"Every time he refuses," Wilson said, "the state can fine him again."

If Walder opts to fight the state ruling, Wilson said, he must file an appeal within 14 days. Since it was made by a single judge, Walder could request a rehearing by either a three-person panel or the full commission within 30 days. If six of the 13 commissioners grant a rehearing, the original order is nullified, pending the results of the rehearing.

If that doesn't go well, Walder "can jump right back over to the appellate court," Wilson said. In either case, though, "he's got hanging around his neck factual findings that they are going to assume are true," she said.

From "Discrimination Charge" posted at Timber Creek Bed & Breakfast

We politely disagree.  God is not confused.  His Word clearly illustrates and declares that marriage is between one man and one woman.  It also labels homosexuality as an abominable sin throughout the Old and New Testaments.  God's Word is the ultimate authority, infallible, and unchanging.  It is the same yesterday, today, and forever.  His Word cannot be changed by a vote of the Illinois General Assembly when it passed the Civil Unions Act or the Gay Marriage Bill.  Marriage is only appropriate God's way.  Sexuality is only appropriate God's way.

Consequently, we cannot host civil unions or gay marriages at TimberCreek Bed & Breakfast.  It is not an issue of fairness or equality, but an issue of right and wrong.  We cannot be part of what God condemns.  Be assured that we are not lawless, hateful, judgmental, bigoted, or activists by any definition.  We did not initiate the present controversy.  We are not the ones who voted to change the 6,000 year-old definition of marriage.  We are just small business owners trying to be consistent in following God's Word and living it out practically in our lives.  And we are not alone. . . .

Lesbians Sue Christian School for Biblical Beliefs

A lesbian "married couple" plan to file a civil rights lawsuit against a Christian school in San Diego, California for not enrolling their 5-year-old daughter based on the following from the school's handbook:
“Mt. Erie Christian Academy [MECA] is a religious, Bible-believing institution providing education in a distinct Christian environment, and it believes that its biblical role is to work in conjunction with the home to mold students to be Christ like. On those occasions in which the atmosphere or conduct within a particular home is counter to or in opposition to the biblical lifestyle that the school teaches, the school reserves the right, within its sole discretion, to refuse admission of an applicant or to discontinue enrollment of a student. This includes, but is not necessarily limited to, living in, condoning or supporting sexual immorality; practicing homosexual lifestyle or alternative gender identity; promoting such practices; or otherwise having the inability to support the moral principles of the school (Leviticus 20:13a; Romans 1:21-27; Matthew 19:4-6; I Corinthians 6:9-20).”

According to 10News.com, the student attended both preschool and summer school at the institution.

While school administrators have not commented about the case to the media, ABC 10 cited a woman identified as "Kailyn" who described herself as the director of Mt. Erie, who told them that although the school has a non-discrimination policy in place, that the "Bible says homosexuality is a sin," and that "we don't condone any sinful lifestyles."

"The least Christian thing I could think of is turning away a child," Rev. MacArthur Flournoy of the Religion and Faith Program at the Human Rights Campaign said in a statement on HRC's website. "The message this school is sending to this child is that God is not there for her nor for her parents. There's absolutely nothing Godly in their actions."

Added Johanna Eager, Director of HRC Foundation’s Welcoming Schools program: “There is no doubt substantial harm is done to schools, children, teachers and families when a school tells a student that something is wrong with them or their family.”

San Diego attorney Eugene Iredale said . . . both California and federal cases have upheld the right of private institutions to bar membership based on religious beliefs.  That is exactly the opposite of discrimination laws that pertain to publicly-funded programs and businesses that cater to the general public.

Iredale said he believes that in the next five to 10 years, the U.S. Supreme Court will have to decide a case like the one involving Mt. Erie because of changing public policy regarding homosexuality.

Sheena said she's ready to fight for it.

Team 10 reached out to the National Center for Lesbian Rights.

"This type of policy is out of touch with reality," said Cathy Sakimura, deputy director and family law director for the NCLR.

Sakimura said barring Sheena's daughter from school could create a culture of fear among children at the school, allowing children to think it’s not OK to be LGBT or divorced. She hopes the Mt. Erie situation will start an important conversation within the church community, one that leans toward better acceptance. She said many parents within the church and school community may be ready to change the policies to better reflect that.

From "Faith-based schools face LGBT dilemmas" by Wayne Stender, WORLD News Service 10/5/15

In the months since the Supreme Court decided same-sex marriage should be legal throughout the United States, faith-based high schools have entered a new frontier. While some Christian schools are fighting to teach biblical views on sexuality, others have changed to fit in.

Solicitor General Donald Verrilli made comments before the Supreme Court foreshadowing legal problems for faith-based schools. When asked by Justice Samuel Alito if a faith-based school could lose its tax-exempt status over its views on same-sex marriage, Verrilli replied, "It's certainly going to be an issue. I don't deny that."

Joe Carter, editor for The Gospel Coalition, wrote last spring that the Supreme Court's decision on same-sex marriage could force some schools to either adjust views on sexuality or give-up non-profit status, making them for-profit schools. That could mean faith-based schools won't be in existence much longer.

So, this news organization reaches out to an attorney who likens Christian practices to human sacrifice and amputation. Wow. Oh, and their other source? Homosexualist Oregon Persecutes Christian Judge

A county judge who stopped officiating all weddings is being targeted for personal destruction by homosexual activists in Oregon media and even by the Commission on Judicial Fitness and Disability, as they investigate every aspect of his life, including his complaints to referees after his son was injured at a soccer game.
"It appears that the commission has thrown everything in but the kitchen sink. The clear issue that they're after me on is that I had stopped doing weddings because I have a firmly held religious conviction."

An Oregon judge who refused to perform same-sex marriages is facing multiple complaints in a state ethics investigation, including that he put up a picture of Adolf Hitler in the Salem courthouse, a state judicial commission said on Tuesday.

Patrick Korten, a spokeswoman for Day, said the complaints were baseless. He said the Hitler picture was part of a display to honor the service of veterans in World War Two and not to glorify the Nazi dictator.

Day has retained an attorney and will be allowed to present evidence at a Nov. 9 hearing, according to the judicial commission notice.

The commission could send the complaint to the Oregon Supreme Court if it finds the judge guilty of violating the judicial code of conduct and the state constitution.

Marion County Judge Vance Day said the Hitler portrait was not intended to glorify the Nazi dictator but was part of a display on democracy's defeat of fascism. Day, a former chairman of the Oregon Republican Party, said he's being targeted because of his Christian beliefs.

Day is the head of the Veterans Treatment Court, which aims to provide intensive monitoring of veterans to treat drug and alcohol problems as an alternative to jail. Several of the allegations against him stem from his interactions with veterans and displays he placed around his courtroom.

When a federal court ruling in May 2014 made same-sex marriage legal in Oregon, Day instructed his staff to refer same-sex couples looking to marry to other judges. Later, he decided to stop performing marriages altogether. Day said same-sex marriage violates his religious beliefs.

While the judicial fitness commission gets dozens of complaints each year, it's rare for one to result in a formal disciplinary proceeding. Since 2007, five judges have been referred to the Supreme Court for sanctions, said Susan Isaacs, the commission's executive director.

Marion County Circuit Judge Vance Day needs to retire with his "deeply-held religious beliefs," now that the evolving complexity of justice has overwhelmed him.

Day – who attends Morning Star Community Church in Salem – is welcome to [his religious freedom rights under the First Amendment] when he's off the bench. But that faith-based stamp-of-approval is precisely what many couples seek to avoid when they head to the courthouse, rather than the local chapel, to finalize this civil transaction.

Day has had a great deal of time to ponder his Constitutional oath, the requirements of his faith, and his responsibility to ensure that neither his words nor conduct in the courtroom "manifest bias or prejudice."

From "Gays target Oregon judge for purge because he won't participate in perverted weddings" by David Drudge, Catholic Online 9/8/15

Judges are important to the homosexual equivalency movement, which relies on secular support to legally affirm their civil-marriage status. Few churches are willing to participate in what is widely viewed as a perversion of marriage.

The developing issue is whether or not public officials can refuse to perform a legally prescribed duty on the basis of religious conviction. The answer appears to be no, a public official is required to perform all of their duties, regardless. This was the verdict in the case of Kim Davis, an elected county clerk who refused to participate in gay marriages by issuing licenses with her name on them.

In Ohio, the Supreme Court's Board of Professional Conduct also announced its ruling that judges in the state could not refuse to marry same-sex couples on any personal ground, including moral or religious.

This is sadism, akin to Nero. According to legend, Nero often had Christians killed at his parties for spectacle. They could be burned alive as human torches to illuminate his gardens. What the homosexual lobby appears to be doing is something similar. They are actively seeking public officials who disagree with their perversion and they are insisting that they, in particular, burn for their ceremonies. Granted, nobody dies, but the suffering felt by these people who have faithfully served the public all their lives, is very real.

Religious Liberty vs. Gay Agenda: Ted Cruz in Iowa

Christians persecuted for their faith went on stage at a rally in Des Moines, Iowa last night to discuss how they were victimized by their own government and stripped of their jobs, businesses and religious liberty.  Republican presidential candidate and Texas U.S. senator Ted Cruz, hosting the event, told the crowd that America is nearing the end of its founding principle of freedom of religion if Bible-believing Christians don't rise up immediately.

Cruz, looking to gain traction in an early voting state with a heavy concentration of evangelical Christians, held a highly organized and produced "Rally for Religious Liberty" Friday night. The rally featured live music, interviews with people who said their religious liberty was violated and sermon-like speeches from Cruz, who tried to cement himself as the candidate of choice for evangelical voters in a crowded Republican primary field.

"There is a war on faith in America today," Cruz said, later noting that 54 million evangelical Christians stayed home during the 2012 election.

"I'm here to tell you, we will stay home no longer," he said as the audience, which filled a ballroom and the campaign estimated to number 2,500 people, cheered.

While Cruz will be competing for the evangelical vote with candidates including former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, former senator Rick Santorum and neurosurgeon Ben Carson, few have been as vociferous about the notion that religious liberty is under attack than Cruz. . . .

First up onstage Friday night were Dick and Betty Odgaard, an Iowa couple who would not host a gay wedding at a venue they owned because they felt doing so would violate their religious beliefs. The two have been the subject of a lawsuit and closed their business. The senator sat down with the Odgaards onstage and prompted them to tell their story, bringing Betty Odgaard to the verge of tears.

“I know this has been a very hard journey,” Cruz told them, leaning over to hold Betty Odgaard’s hand in a rare public display of softer emotions from the senator. “Scripture tells us, God ordered our steps.”

“Amen,” she replied.

“I’m convinced you have gone down this road, endured the pain, endured the attacks, endured the hatred, precisely to put you where you are here today, for such a time as this,” he said, to applause.

"These threats are not imagined, they're not made up. These are real people leading real lives who found themselves facing persecution simply for living out their faith. There is a war on faith in America today."

The event featured guest speakers who had faced consequences of upholding their religious beliefs, from losing a job to vandalism to losing a business.

"They didn't ask for confrontation and the government came to them and said, 'Choose between faith and obedience to government power,' and they said, 'I follow a higher power and that is God almighty,'" Cruz said.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Kentucky filed a federal lawsuit against Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis on Thursday afternoon on behalf of two homosexual and two heterosexual couples, all of whom were turned away when they tried to get marriage licenses from Davis' office this week.

Davis has said that her Christian beliefs prevented her from complying with the Supreme Court decision, so she decided to issue no more marriage licenses to any couple, gay or straight. She could not be reached Thursday after the lawsuit was filed. Her office was already closed and she did not respond to an email.

She is among a handful of judges and clerks across the South who have defied the high court's order, maintaining that the right to "religious freedom" protects them from having to comply.

Some judges and clerks in Alabama and Texas have done the same [as Kim Davis of Kentucky], ordering their offices in the name of religious liberty and free speech to issue no marriage licenses at all.

Legal experts are dubious that religious freedom arguments will protect public officials who not only refuse to participate due to their own beliefs, but also decline to make accommodations so that others who don't object can serve the public instead.

Clerks and probate judges hold the keys to marriage in counties around the country, and in many rural areas, there are few alternatives for hundreds of miles. Couples turned away could seek a court order, and a clerk who still refuses to issue a license could be jailed for contempt, [legal expert Sam] Marcosson said.

They also risk criminal official misconduct charges, said Warren County Attorney Ann Milliken, president of the Kentucky County Attorneys Association. The misdemeanor, punishable by up to a year in jail, is committed when a public servant "refrains from performing a duty imposed upon him by law or clearly inherent in the nature of his office."

Casey Davis, the clerk in Casey County, Kentucky, says he won't resign and he'd rather go to jail than issue a marriage license to a same-sex couple. None have yet come in to get one, he said.

The couples named in the suit filed by the ACLU are April Miller and Karen Roberts; Shantel Burke and Stephen Napier; Jody Fernandez and Kevin Holloway; and L. Aaron Skaggs and Barry W. Spartman.

Gov. Steve Beshear, a Democrat, had defended the state's ban on same-sex marriage, but after the High Court's ruling on June 26, he issued an executive order telling all state agencies and clerks to comply with it.

Casey County Clerk Casey Davis, a Republican, said late Wednesday evening on MSNBC that the governor should provide "some sort of relief" for clerks who have moral objections to the Supreme Court's ruling. He also likened Beshear's order to putting county clerks in "prison."

"I did not take an oath that said I would lay my personal feelings down to do this job nor will I ever do that," Casey Davis said on air. "As a matter of fact I said I would do this job to the best of my ability, so help me God, and the best of my ability does not go beyond what my conscience will allow me to do."

[Bill May, Executive Director of the Kentucky County Clerks Association,] said he has been in contact with county clerks who are resisting the Supreme Court decision, advising them that Kentucky law states marriage licenses "shall be issued" by the county clerks and that KRS 522.020 could be used to prosecute the clerks for official misconduct, a Class "A" misdemeanor. A conviction could result in a judge ordering a clerk to be removed from office, May said.

"God is my first love, and I will stand for Him," Davis said. "And if it means I get thrown out of office, we'll deal with that when it comes."

Davis suggests the state issue marriage licenses online, or since the Supreme Court is now defining marriage, then the federal government needs to issue marriage licenses.

"As much as these people out here picketing my office believe in what they are standing up for, I myself have just as equally if not stronger convictions," Davis said, weeping.

As of Thursday evening, the couple was unable to obtain a marriage license from the county, so attorney Jan Soifer confirmed that they would move forward with filing suit.

Pointing to revised forms available on the Department of State Health Services' website, Soifer and attorney Austin Kaplan wrote that Lang had "absolutely no valid reason" to delay issuing marriage licenses.

From "ACLU Letter to County Clerks: You Are Legally Required to Issue Marriage Licenses to Same-Sex Couples" by Press Release, ENEWSPF 7/2/15

County clerks face legal perils if they fail to issue marriage licenses to eligible same-sex couples, stated the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Texas in letters sent to select county clerk offices in Texas yesterday. The letters explain in detail the legal obligations of public officials following the United States Supreme Court’s ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges.

The ACLU of Texas sent the letters to clerks in counties where residents have reported recalcitrance over issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

From "Despite SCOTUS ruling in favor of same-sex marriage, resistance in TX county remains" by CNN 7/3/15

"I would like to issue a statement that I will not be issuing same-sex marriage licenses due to my religious convictions," Katie Lang wrote in a statement posted on the county clerk's website.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton lashed out after Friday's ruling, calling the right to same-sex marriages "fabricated" and "newly invented" -- language Lang parroted in her statement -- and said judges "may claim that the government cannot force them to conduct same-sex wedding ceremonies over their religious objections."

If those judges are sued or fined, "numerous lawyers" stand willing to defend their rights, and "I will do everything I can as attorney general to be a public voice for those standing in defense of their religious beliefs," Paxton said in a statement and on social media.

Leaning on Paxton's guidance, Lang said Tuesday, "We find that although it fabricated a new constitutional right in 2015, the Supreme Court did not diminish, overrule, or call into question the First Amendment rights to free exercise of religion that formed the first freedom in the Bill of Rights in 1791."

The three officers in the Decatur County Clerk's Office have resigned from their positions because of their opposition to the Supreme Court's decision on same-sex marriage, a county official said today.

According to Decatur County Commissioner David Boroughs, County Clerk Gwen Pope and employees Sharon Bell and Mickey Butler have all resigned because of religious opposition to the ruling.

Boroughs said he confirmed the resignations after speaking with County Mayor Mike Creasy.

"That's a personal individual decision, but I strongly support them if their faith is that strong," Boroughs said. "I'm proud of them that their faith is so strong and well-rounded that they feel they can do that."

In a letter to the board of supervisors, Grenada County Circuit Clerk Linda Barnette announced her resignation on Tuesday, citing the Supreme Court's decision to legalize same-sex marriage.

Barnette has been the circuit clerk for 24 years, and announced that her resignation is effective immediately.

"The Supreme Court's decision violates my core values as a Christian," she wrote. "My final authority is the Bible. I cannot in all good conscience issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples under my name because the Bible clearly teaches that homosexuality is contrary to God's plan and purpose for marriage and family."

"I choose to obey God rather than man," Barnette wrote.

Homosexuals Force Closure of Iowa Wedding Chapel

In August 2013, Lee Stafford and Jared Ellers filed a complaint against Betty and Richard Odgaard, owners of Görtz Haus Gallery gift shop and bistro in Grimes, Iowa, because the Odgaards said it would be against their Mennonite faith to rent their building for Stafford's and Ellers's same-sex "wedding."  The Odgaards paid the homosexuals $5,000 to settle the complaint and the Odgaards filed a lawsuit against the Iowa Civil Rights Commission over the state's anti-Christian laws, but the homosexualists' publicity hate campaign against the Odgaards has chased away virtually all customers.
“They didn’t come in because the people who are against us are more vocal than the people who are in our court.”
-- Richard Odgaard
For background, consider how homosexualists retaliate against those who resist the Gay Agenda: They threaten financial ruin of businesses, and they intimidate Christian lawmakers, and they sue Christians who won't celebrate "gay weddings," and they threaten to jail pastors who won't perform "gay weddings," and they torpedo fundraising aimed at helping the Christian victims, and they commit violence, even threatening death of Christians.

-- From "Grimes' Gortz Haus to stop all weddings in wake of discrimination complaint" by Grant Rodgers, Des Moines Register 1/28/15

Betty Odgaard said after the complaint was publicized that the gallery's gift shop and bistro have always served gays and lesbians, but that hosting a same-sex wedding would be against the family's religious beliefs.

Odgaard said the Gortz Haus has typically hosted 15 to 20 weddings on a yearly basis. Additionally, the couple will stop catering and providing flowers to all weddings. The couple made the decision voluntarily because continuing to hold weddings could make them a target for future discrimination lawsuits, Odgaard said.

The Odgaards have dismissed a lawsuit they filed against the Iowa Civil Rights Commission that claimed their religious freedom was being violated, said Eric Baxter, an attorney with the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty who represented the Odgaards. After refusing to host a wedding for Stafford and Ellers, the Odgaards became a target for "hateful and threatening emails," according to the lawsuit they filed. Betty Odgaard told the Register in October 2013 that people were boycotting the gallery.

[The Odgaards religious liberties] were overruled, based on a 2007 change to Iowa law that made it illegal for a business that's open to the public to discriminate based on sexual orientation. . . .

A religious belief defense could have been helpful for the Odgaards, who've seen the lunch crowd at the Gortz Haus' bistro cut by half, which they attribute to the notoriety over their stance. . . .

The Odgaards' case was publicized internationally, and they say they got "venomous" mail and phone calls from people labeling them as bigots. The media firestorm erupted just before the Iowa State Fair, and Betty Odgaard remembers fearing that people would recognize the couple and lash out as they strolled the fairgrounds. She fell into a deep depression for eight months, she said.

The publicity sometimes left Dick Odgaard looking over his shoulder.

In 2002, Betty and Richard Odgaard remodeled an old Lutheran church in Grimes, turning it into the Gortz Haus Gallery. Their troubles began in 2013, when the couple refused to host a homosexual wedding at the gallery.

"We got a lot of phone calls in the beginning," Mrs. Odgaard recalls, "and they said, Heard what you did. We'll never be back again because you're haters and bigots. So, yes, we saw a decrease in our business immediately."

But the couple is undeterred and now has a ministry called God's Original Design. Their plan is to use billboards to proclaim natural marriage as God's design.

From "Another Christian Family-Run Business Closing After Refusing to Host Gay Wedding" by Anugrah Kumar, Christian Post Contributor 6/20/15

Richard Odgaard and his wife, Betty, the owners of Görtz Haus Gallery in Grimes, Iowa, say they will close their business completely by the end of August, about two years after they told a gay couple from Des Moines their facility cannot be rented for the wedding.

The Odgaards see a 2009 decision of the Iowa Supreme Court as the beginning of their violation of religious freedom. "I think if people in Iowa would have had a chance to vote on this, it would have never have been this way. People in Iowa are pretty conservative," Betty was quoted as saying.

The Christian couple also plans to use the building for its original function, by turning it back into a church. "That would be the most wonderful option," Betty said.

From "Fearing Another Lawsuit, Christian Business Owners Stopped Hosting All Weddings. Now Their Business Is Dead." by Kelsey Harkness, The Daily Signal 6/19/15

The case was the first of its kind in Iowa, but it didn’t receive the same sort of media attention as the bakers in Oregon, the photographers in New Mexico or the farmers in New York.

The couple says that’s because pending litigation prevented them from being able to speak out, further isolating them from their community.

The Odgaards also feel they never got their day in court, and had the case turned out differently, they might not have been driven out of business.

“Now the precedent has been set,” Richard said. “The administrative process has demonstrated what it will do if this happens [again], so it’s a matter of setting somebody up and collecting money. It’s that simple. It’s all they have to do.”

Christian Fundraising Nixed by Homosexualists

Recently, Christians discovered a new means to fight the Gay Agenda, but once again homosexualists have exploited political correctness to battle back:

Now that activist judges have stripped voters of their right to uphold marriage, the populace has decided to vote with their pocketbooks by funding Christians who publicly stand for Christ.  In response, the homosexualists have intimidated GoFundMe into shutting down such Christian donation campaigns.

A supporter of [Christian bakers] Aaron and Melissa Klein set up the [GoFundMe] campaign to help raise money for the couple after an administrative law judge for the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries [BOLI] issued a proposed order recommending they pay $135,000 in damages to a lesbian couple from Portland.

The BOLI judge said the Kleins illegally discriminated against Rachel and Laurel Bowman-Cryer when they refused the women's attempt to order a wedding cake, instead citing their Christian beliefs against same-sex marriage.

It wasn't clear Friday what specifically led to the apparent shelving of the GoFundMe fundraiser. But in response to a query by The Oregonian/OregonLive, the San Diego-based company provided this email reply:

After careful review by our team, we have found the "Support Sweet Cakes By Melissa" campaign to be in violation of our Terms and Conditions and have removed this campaign. The money raised thus far will still be made available for withdrawal.

Lisa Watson, of Cupcake Jones, started her own campaign to contact GoFundMe and report the campaign as being in violation of their terms of service. Watson’s own post on Facebook stated, “this business has been found GUILTY OF DISCRIMINATION and is being allowed to fundraise to pay their penalty. The gofundme terms of service address hate speech, bigotry, criminal activity, and sexism among other things in their campaign…The amount of money they have raised in a matter of a few hours by thousands of anonymous cowards is disgusting.”

Late on Friday GoFundMe stopped the Sweet Cakes campaign. Via GoFundMe: "After careful review by our team, we have found the "Support Sweet Cakes By Melissa" campaign to be in violation of our Terms and Conditions. The money raised thus far will still be made available for withdrawal. While a different campaign was recently permitted for a pizzeria in Indiana, no laws were violated and the campaign remained live. However, the subjects of the "Support Sweet Cakes By Melissa" campaign have been formally charged by local authorities and found to be in violation of Oregon state law concerning discriminatory acts. Accordingly, the campaign has been disabled."

“The campaign entitled “Sweet Cakes by Melissa” involves formal charges,” a [GoFundMme] company spokeswoman said in a statement. “As such, our team has determined that it was in violation of GoFundMe’s Terms & Conditions.”

But the spokeswoman did not respond to a follow-up question about another fundraising campaign involving Jeremy Meeks, the California man dubbed the “Hot Convict” whose mugshot went viral last year. The apparent double-standard was pointed out by a number of Twitter users. That campaign, set up by Meeks’ mother, has raised over $6,000.

Meeks was arrested in June 2014 on felony weapons charges and sentenced to two years in prison in February.

From "Sweet Cakes owners direct donors to new fundraising site as they look to restart GoFundMe campaign" by George Rede, The Oregonian 4/25/15

The GoFundMe campaign quickly picked up steam, raising more than $100,000 in just a few hours before it was shut down.

Aaron Klein said reporters came to his home and his shop, the couple's business car was vandalized and broken into twice, and photographers and florists severed ties with the company, eventually forcing Sweet Cakes to close its Gresham storefront shop in September 2013. The business now operates out of the couple's home in Sandy.

Samaritan's Purse, founded by Franklin Graham, eldest son of the Rev. Billy Graham . . . is raising funds to help the Kleins pay their fine and meet other expenses. "They have taken a stand for the Word of God, and they should not have to stand alone," Samaritan's Purse President Franklin Graham said. "I believe that Christians across our nation will rally around Aaron and Melissa and their five children."

From "GoFundMe Shuts Down Campaign for Christian Bakers Asked to Pay $135,000 Fine for Refusing to Make Cake for Gay Wedding" by Anugrah Kumar, Christian Post Contributor 4/26/15

[Franklin] Graham urged prayers for Aaron and Melissa, and the nation. "When our judges are punishing Christians for practicing what they believe, that's persecution, plain and simple."

"It's very discouraging. This is not money coming from a business, this is not money coming from an insurance fund, this is money coming straight from our bank account," Klein said in a radio interview with the Family Research Council. "This is money that should be used to pay my mortgage, money that should be used to feed our kids, not something that should be given to others," Klein added. "This is a decision I made because of my faith, and now the government is now saying it doesn't matter, your kids can suffer for it as well."

"What happened today is an egregious assault on the freedom Americans have to peaceably live their lives according to their beliefs," FRC President Tony Perkins said in a statement. "An Oregon judge made clear in no uncertain terms to the Kleins and all Oregonians that the state has the right to demand that citizens engage in activities that violate their beliefs and if they refuse, they will lose their ability to make a living. In a free country, this is a ruling that cannot and must not stand," Perkins added.

Mich. Christian Business Trashed by Homosexualists

After Brian Klawiter, owner of Dieseltec in Grandville, Michigan posted on Facebook that he wouldn't tolerate overt homosexuality in his diesel repair shop, his building and vehicles were vandalized and the city cited his business for non-compliance.
"Well, folks, as we predicted, it didn't take long for the ugly face of the homosexual movement to present itself. What started out with 'mere' death threats against myself and my family and homosexuals spamming my Facebook page with gay porn shots, has escalated to physical violence. See the pics below. We called police to file a report this morning, and City of Grandville Officer John Davis responded. The officer arrived, looked around, took a few notes, chuckled, and said 'turn it in to the insurance company.' He gave us a Police Report number 15-2779, but did not take the rock which has a fingerprint on it.The homosexual agenda is evil, and is prepared to destroy anyone who gets in its way, or who calls homosexuality a sin. Today it's us; tomorrow, it could be you."

"We're not intimidated by it," said Klawiter on Tuesday. "I think it's childish behavior. I think for a community of people that want to display tolerance, I don't think that's the right way to do it."

In an interview, Klawiter said, "I feel anti-gay is what lead every to all of this hate. And make no mistake, this is no back-pedal.

"What this is, is a Christian business owner standing on principles. Nothing has changed from my original statement. I still won't tolerate certain behavior in my shop. And that's never going to change."

Klawiter said he feels he should be able to run his automotive diesel engine repair shop how he'd like to, and that includes running it under his religious beliefs.

From "Owner of vandalized anti-gay auto shop: 'Homosexual agenda is evil'" by John Agar, The Grand Rapids Press 4/21/15

"No, I'm not going to inquire into every secret, personal sin of all my customers. The Lord knows I have many of my own sins, and that he has forgiven me much," owner Brian Klawiter wrote on a new post on Dieseltec's Facebook page.

"What I meant by my original statement, was that I am drawing a line in the sand: where someone is engaging in overt displays of homosexual behavior, I don't have to tolerate it in my place of business, just like I don't have to tolerate overt displays of immoral heterosexual behavior in my shop (hypothetically speaking)."

"I mentioned it in my post because I am tired of the constant media drumbeat in favor of it. For my own sake, the level of reaction certainly has been unpleasant. No one likes gay porn, death threats, and vile speech directed their way. But for the country, it is hopefully an eye-opener. This is the 'tolerance' of a homosexual community on display, and it will only get worse as they feel emboldened."

"So while I won't allow any immoral behavior in my shop, I have clarified my previous statement: sinners - homosexual or heterosexual - are welcome in my shop, but if I can see by their behavior on my premises what their personal shortcoming is, I reserve the right to point it out to them (in a loving way, of course) and point them to the One who can take them and change them into who they were designed by Him to be."

[In an interview with a TV reporter,] Klawiter also played a [phone] message that he says is one of many threats he has received against his life.

“You will be killed,” the voice on the message said before the call ended.

Klawiter says he feels that some of those who say his views are intolerant have shown that they won’t show tolerance for his beliefs and convictions.

“I would love to sit down and have coffee with anyone and discuss the Gospel and what I believe and I would also lend an ear to their opinion. But I certainly wouldn’t vandalize their shop or attempt to put them out of business just because they had a viewpoint,” Klawiter said. “I think that’s the most ridiculous of this whole situation.”

[After ignoring the issue for months,] City Clerk Mary Meines said the city sent Dieseltec another notice last week, after Klawiter posted to the business' Facebook page that he would not serve openly gay customers. The latest notice gave the business until May 15 to get a city license, she said.

Brian Klawiter, owner of the auto shop, submitted forms Monday, April 20, to come into compliance with local licensing rules. Following a pre-printed statement on the application form about agreeing to conduct business in compliance with city ordinances, Klawiter added this handwritten addendum:
"With the exception of Sec. 12-14 due to its wording. An inspection of my business can be achieved with a warrant in accordance with constitutional law."
The ordinance section states that the city has "authority to enter (licensed businesses), with or without search warrant, at all reasonable times."
