Kill Baby to Save Mother? No! — Gov. Scott Walker

As the mainstream media set traps to ensnare pro-lifers in the 2016 presidential quest, most conservative candidates bite their tongues to avoid another 2012 "Todd Akin moment."  However, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker boldly answered the "gotcha question" in Thursday's GOP debate:

". . . I’ve got a position I think is consistent with many Americans out there in that I believe that that is an unborn child in need of protection out there, and I’ve said many a time that that unborn child can be protected and there are many other alternatives that will also protect the life of that mother.  That’s been consistently proven."

. . . Even for the party long aligned in opposition to the procedure, the issue of exceptions has been politically challenging. Though the Republican party platform calls for a ban without exceptions, previous GOP presidential nominees Mitt Romney, John McCain and George W. Bush generally said they favored such exceptions. The politics around rape and the specter of a woman dying are considered too toxic for a general election.

Democratic National Committee Chairman Debbie Wasserman Schultz on Friday compared the crop of Republican hopefuls to Todd Akin, whose 2012 Senate bid was derailed when he said “legitimate rape” rarely causes pregnancy.

"I've said for years, medically there's always a better choice than choosing between the life of an unborn baby and the life of the mother," he added. "Medically that's just a nonissue."

Walker answered that he has a position on the issue "that's in line with everyday America."

The legislation makes performing an abortion a felony punishable by up to three and a half years in prison and $10,000 in fines. The only way abortions after 20 weeks are allowed is if the mother is likely to die or be severely injured.

Late on Monday, Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton attacked Walker on Twitter for the new law, writing, “Gov. Walker signed dangerous abortion restrictions into law in WI - without exceptions for rape or incest. Extreme and unacceptable. -H.”

While Walker has a long history of opposing abortions . . . Walker's record includes defunding Planned Parenthood; requiring abortion doctors to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals, a law currently blocked by a federal court judge; and requiring women to have ultrasounds and be shown images of the fetus before having an abortion.

The governor's signature makes Wisconsin the 15th state to pass similar bans. There is no exception for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest.

"For people, regardless of where they might stand, when an unborn child can feel pain I think most people feel it's appropriate to protect that child," Walker said.

Bans on abortion after 20 weeks are popular, at least on the surface. A Quinnipiac University poll conducted in November of 2014 found that 6 in 10 Americans support banning abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, except in cases of rape or incest.

In 2012, a panel of obstetric and gynecological experts signed the Dublin Declaration, which states that “direct abortion is not medically necessary to save the life of a woman… there is a fundamental difference between abortion, and necessary medical treatments that are carried out to save the life of the mother, even if such treatment results in the loss of life of her unborn child.”

When the mother’s life is at stake, medical actions are taken with the intent to save the woman, not to dispose of the child.

Abortion proponents like to remind us that we’re not living in the 19th century or even the 1950s, but they conveniently forget that means we can handle medically challenging pregnancies and deliveries better than ever before. In a 2004 study from the Alan Guttmacher Institute, only 4% of women cited “physical problem with my health” as reason for getting an abortion. But never has literal abortion actually been necessary to save the life of the mother, and no woman should be made to believe otherwise. This is where definition comes into play, and where media figures like Kelly get it wrong.

And that’s the reality: abortion is never medically necessary to save a mother’s life. . . . This is reinforced by the testimony of Dr. Anthony Levatino, a reformed abortionist, who described a typical “life of the mother” case as he saw it:

“During my time at Albany Medical Center I managed hundreds of such cases by ‘terminating’ pregnancies [via live delivery by C-section] to save mothers' lives. In all those hundreds of cases, the number of unborn children that I had to deliberately kill was zero.”

In other words, when a life-in-danger medical condition arises, the solution is not to kill the baby, but to address what’s wrong with the woman. Granted, if we’re talking before viability, this may not always result in the preborn child surviving.

But they did not deny the worker gave the explicit sex advice . . .

Colorado Attorney General John Suthers told the Register he will have attorneys review the video of a Colorado Planned Parenthood employee coaching a woman pretending to be a 15-year-old girl to engage in dangerous sexual activity, to buy goods from an adult sex store and view and read pornography.

The Colorado video bolsters allegations that Planned Parenthood officials ignore and violate laws intended to protect minors. Though the video reveals a Planned Parenthood worker encouraging a girl, who told the counselor she is 15, to shop at a sex store, a local ordinance prohibits minors from entering adult sex shops.

The woman goes on to encourage the girl to watch porn videos with her older boyfriend, but to be careful of viruses — on her computer.

After the girl expresses concern about her parents potentially finding out about porn, the Planned Parenthood worker advises her on methods of hiding it from them.

Kinky Planned Parenthood Sex Advisor Caught, Fired

Planned Parenthood president and CEO Betty Cockrum issued a statement that she fired Megan, the Indianapolis abortion clinic counselor whose job was admittedly to counsel teenagers on sex performance, but Megan was caught on undercover videotape advising a 15-year-old girl on sado-masochistic sex acts.  Cockrum claims that type of training goes beyond Planned Parenthood's standard sex education.

Live Action president Lila Rose said the video — the first of several tapes from other Planned Parenthood centers around the country that her organization plans to release — reveals Planned Parenthood's support of "dangerous" sexual experimentation that should alarm parents and lawmakers. She also said it should result in Planned Parenthood losing federal funds for sexual education.

She said this type of counseling not only happens in Indianapolis, but elsewhere in Planned Parenthood clinics. Rose contends the tapes reveal the agency's underlying philosophy that as long as sexual practices are consensual, then bondage and discipline and other sadomasochistic practices are OK.

Similar videotapes will be released in the next several weeks, she said, at a time when Planned Parenthood just received $75 million more under Obamacare for a personal responsibility and education program.

But on Thursday, the Live Action investigator called the Planned Parenthood clinic to discuss the appointment she had made on Monday. The clinic employee on the phone confirmed that the appointment would be with Megan.

The recorded phone call appears to have caught Planned Parenthood lying about firing an employee that had given inappropriate advice to a minor.

A Planned Parenthood official acknowledged the staff member who took the call Thursday set up an appointment for the woman posing as the teen, even though she knew it was a Live Action operative.

“They announce terminating the employee for violating 'professional standards' but never specify what those standards are,” she pointed out. “Meanwhile, their BDSM training video remains online, and they continue to list ‘resources’ that tell kids that torture sex is totally fine.”

. . . New Mexico's largest city is believed to be the first municipality in the country to place such an initiative on a ballot.

The "Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Ordinance," which needs a majority to pass, would have statewide impact because the only late-term abortion providers in the largely rural state are in Albuquerque.

Women living out of state also fly to Albuquerque for this type of care, said Micaela Cadena, policy director at Young Women United. The New Mexico-based group is part of the Respect ABQ Women campaign, which is fighting the local measure.

To get the measure on the ballot, Operation Rescue and other antiabortion groups gathered 27,000 signatures — more than twice the number the city requires. If successful, the ordinance could be implemented days after city officials certify the election.

Opponents of the measure, including state Atty. Gen. Gary King, have said they're prepared to sue if the measure passes.

[The Susan B. Anthony] List announced $100,000 in ad buys this week. Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union have each spent several hundred thousand dollars in efforts to defeat the measure.

In the undercover recording, the Plaza Inn staffer admits that under such circumstances, “you guys [SWO patients] actually transport yourselves[.] … I think you wind up going to the hospital[.]”

According to its website, the Plaza Inn, which boasts “the Best in Southwestern Hospitality,” is associated with three other hotels in the region: the Holiday Inn Express and Suites in Colton/Riverside, CA; the Holiday Inn Express in Barstow, CA; and the Palmdale Hotel & Resort in Palmdale, CA.

An anti-abortion group that previously released several videotapes of undercover visits to abortion clinics released another video on Sunday of a staff member at a Bronx clinic describing late-term abortion procedures. The group likened the practices to those at the clinic of Dr. Kermit Gosnell, the Philadelphia doctor charged with killing viable fetuses.

“The gruesome and inhuman practices exposed in Gosnell’s ‘House of Horrors’ are business as usual for the abortion industry in America,” [Lila Rose, president of Live Action] said in a statement, calling on the New York State Health Department to investigate Dr. Emily and other clinics performing late-term abortions. Both the Health Department and Dr. Emily center did not respond to requests for comment.

When a pregnant woman posing as a patient asked what happens if the fetus accidentally “comes out” at home before the final procedure, a staff member replied, “If it comes out, it comes out. Flush it.”

The woman also asked what happens if the removed fetus is still “twitching” or “breathing.” The staff member said all aborted fetuses are placed in jars of solution and sent to a laboratory for weighing; if the fetus is still moving, “the solution will make it stop.”

Live Action . . . claims that the videos show that abortion doctors are willing to kill babies in violation of the federal Born-Alive Infants Protection Act of 2002, which requires them to try to save a child born during a failed abortion using the same measures used in miscarriages or preterm births at the same stage of pregnancy.

One video features a D.C. doctor, Cesare Santangelo, who said that in the unlikely event that an abortion resulted in a live birth, “we would not help it.” Santangelo was answering repeated questions from an undercover operative about what would happen, hypothetically, if she gave birth after an unsuccessful abortion.

“I mean, technically, you know, legally, we would be obligated to help it, you know, to survive, but . . . it probably wouldn’t,” Santangelo is shown telling the woman, who was 24 weeks pregnant. “It’s all in how vigorously you do things to help a fetus survive at this point.”

In an interview with The Washington Post, Santangelo said he was trying to reassure the woman, who turned out to be an undercover operative of the group, Live Action. In reality, he said, he would call 9-1-1. But he said he stands by what he said on tape.

“What I said is, basically I wouldn’t do anything extraordinary,” he said Saturday. “We would call EMS. We would call 9-1-1. But I wouldn’t do intubation or anything. . . . You let nature take its course.”

. . . The undercover investigator then asks what to do if the baby comes out while she is at home.

“If it comes out, then it comes out. Flush it…if anything, you know, put it in a bag or something or somewhere and bring it to us,” the counselor says.

. . . the counselor also explains that the abortion is a suction abortion, and says that it is unlikely the baby would come out in one piece. “We never had that for ages,” she says.

The counselor also discourages the woman from going to the hospital if she experience complications, explaining that the hospital won’t want to finish an abortion that the abortion clinic started.

The staff member seen in the footage had been in the entry-level position for about six months, did not follow protocol and was fired within days of the interaction on April 11, said Sarah Wheat, interim co-CEO of Planned Parenthood of the Texas Capital Region. All staff members at the clinic on East Ben White Boulevard were "immediately scheduled for retraining in managing unusual patient encounters."

[Planned Parenthood] said in a statement ". . . [we] do not believe that curtailing access to abortion services is a legitimate means of addressing sex selection . . ."

Live Action interprets this exchange as Planned Parenthood's “encouraging” the woman to have a late-term sex-selective abortion. “Planned Parenthood and their ruthless abortion-first mentality is the real ‘war on women,'” said Lila Rose, founder and president of Live Action, in a statement. “Sex-selective abortion is gender discrimination with lethal consequences for little girls.”

Sex-selective abortions are the latest target of anti-abortion activists whose goal is to make abortions illegal across the United States. Lawmakers at the state and federal level have also latched onto the issue by introducing legislation that criminalizes doctors who perform abortions because of the race or gender of the fetus. Opponents of such laws say they force doctors into the inappropriate position of investigating a woman's personal motivations for seeking an abortion. The House of Representatives will debate Rep. Trent Franks’ (R-Ariz.) Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act on Wednesday, which would ban sex-selective abortions in the United States.

Republicans are trying to claim victory in the public relations war for women this week, holding a vote [today or] Thursday on a bill that prohibits women from getting abortions based on the sex of the fetus.

Unlike other abortion votes in the House, this bill is heading to the floor under suspension of the rules. It’s a procedural maneuver typically reserved for less-controversial bills and requiring two-thirds of House members present and voting to pass. Somewhere around 287 members will have to vote “aye” in order for the bill to pass (depending how many members show up), meaning approximately 45 Democrats will have to sign on with Republicans. In other words, it’s a higher bar to passing the bill.

Abortion rights groups are opposing the legislation, but a bit more quietly than on other abortion votes. A fact sheet from the National Women’s Law Center says it strongly opposes the legislation, calling it an “unconstitutional burden on a fundamental right.” A bloc of Democratic women is also speaking out in opposition. “House Republicans will hit a new low tomorrow when they bring up for a vote legislation that severely interferes with the doctor-patient relationship, criminalizing doctor’s conversations with the women they care for, while forcing women to endure interrogations regarding their medical care,” Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Colo., said in an e-mail.

But a Planned Parenthood spokesman denied that the organization claimed to offer mammograms, saying the transcript of the show clearly shows Richards was referring to the overall effect of on women’s health services if the health overhaul legislation was repealed and not specifically the effect of defunding her group.

The Planned Parenthood employee caught on tape giving inappropriate advice to a couple posing as a pimp and a prostitute has been fired, the organization announced Wednesday.

The video, taped as part of an undercover sting by an antiabortion group, showed a clinic manager in New Jersey apparently advising the pair on how to obtain services for illegal immigrant prostitutes and sex workers as young as 14.

The video was shot as part of a years-long campaign by the group Live Action targeting Planned Parenthood because of its role as an abortion provider.

At least 12 clinics in six states received visits in January by men claiming to be engaged in sex trafficking, according to Planned Parenthood.

Activists behind the sting, conducted on Jan. 13, claimed victory Wednesday, saying the firing is an acknowledgement of negligence.

The undercover actors approached the clinic without an appointment to inquire about testing for sexually transmitted diseases, abortions and access to contraception, Live Action said. They openly stated involvement in "sex work" that employed young, undocumented immigrant girls.

"The only thing that you do have to be careful is, if they are a minor, we are obligated if we hear any certain information to kind of report," the manager said in the video. "So as long as they just lie and say, 'Oh he's 15, 16.' You know, as long as they don't say '14' and as long as it's not too much of an age gap then we just kind of like play it stup-- ..."

New Jersey Attorney General Paula Dow has asked the state Division of Criminal Justice to investigate whether the manager should be charged with a crime in the incident. "At first glance, I find these allegations to be very disturbing," Dow said in a statement.

Planned Parenthood has come under fire from the religious, pro-life, and legal community for five recent videos showing Planned Parenthood clinic managers in New Jersey and Virginia talking to undercover reporters posing as a pimp and prostitute.

The New Jersey abortion clinic manager told the undercover reporters to have the girls lie about their age and write that they are "students" in order that the pimp might get a cheaper service rate. To avoid reporting cases of abuse to the authorities, the manager promises to "play it stupid" when the supposed pimp and minors falsify medical documents to obtain abortion and testing services.

Expose Planned Parenthood, a coalition of many pro-life organizations and individuals, held a webcast on their website Thursday night in which advocates called for the federal government to more closely regulate Planned Parenthood operations and end federal funding to Planned Parenthood. During the webcast, a former Planned Parenthood clinic manager said, "Planned Parenthood is a safe haven for people who are trying to abuse girls and even minor women."

"This body of visual evidence shows several alarming patterns of illegal Planned Parenthood activities including cover-up of sexual abuse of minors, the skirting of parental consent laws, citing unscientific and fabricated medical information to manipulate women to have abortions, and Planned Parenthood's willingness to accept donations earmarked to abort African-American babies."

The videos capture conversations between the undercover "pimp" and Planned Parenthood staffers in three Virginia cities: Charlottesville, Falls Church and Roanoke.

In the Roanoke video, viewable [above], the Planned Parenthood staffer offered the "pimp" emergency, 5-day contraceptive pills that he could pick up for his underage "girls." The staffer also encouraged him, if he was worried about having a sexually transmitted disease, to go donate blood, because the plasma places "have to test for everything anyway."

She further explained for his underage girls, "From the age of 12 up, for birth control, you can just come in and do that. You don't have to have a parent, OK?"

Planned Parenthood receives tens of millions of dollars each year from the federal government to provide non-abortion family-planning services to low-income people.

As 40% of black babies are slain in the womb (per this NY Times article), pro-abortion journalists claim that pro-life advocates are unfairly informing blacks of these statistics. Abortionists fear the message is getting through to the black community, thus risking profits.

For years the largely white staff of Georgia Right to Life, the state’s largest anti-abortion group, tried to tackle the disproportionately high number of black women who undergo abortions. But, staff members said, they found it difficult to make inroads with black audiences.

So in 2009, the group took money that it normally used for advertising a pregnancy hot line and hired a black woman, Catherine Davis, to be its minority outreach coordinator.

Ms. Davis traveled to black churches and colleges around the state, delivering the message that abortion is the primary tool in a decades-old conspiracy to kill off blacks.

This month, the group expanded its reach, making national news with 80 billboards around Atlanta that proclaim, “Black children are an endangered species,” and a Web site, www.toomanyaborted.com.

Across the country, the anti-abortion movement, long viewed as almost exclusively white and Republican, is turning its attention to African-Americans and encouraging black abortion opponents across the country to become more active.

A new documentary, written and directed by Mark Crutcher, a white abortion opponent in Denton, Tex., meticulously traces what it says are connections among slavery, Nazi-style eugenics, birth control and abortion, and is being regularly screened by black organizations.

Abortion opponents say the number is so high because abortion clinics are deliberately located in black neighborhoods and prey upon black women. The evidence, they say, is everywhere: Planned Parenthood’s response to the anti-abortion ad that aired during the Super Bowl featured two black athletes, they note, and several women’s clinics offered free services — including abortions — to evacuees after Hurricane Katrina. [Similar to actions in Haiti last month.]

But those who support abortion rights dispute the conspiracy theory, saying it portrays black women as dupes and victims. The reason black women have so many abortions is simple, they say: too many unwanted pregnancies.

“It’s a perfect storm,” said Loretta Ross, the executive director of the SisterSong Women of Color Reproductive Health Collective in Atlanta, listing a lack of access to birth control, lack of education, and even a high rate of sexual violence. “There’s an assumption that every time a girl is pregnant it’s because of voluntary activity, and it’s so not the case,” Ms. Ross said.

An Alabama abortion clinic is on probation after an undercover video caught a staffer saying the clinic sometimes "bends the rules" in helping a minor get an abortion without parental consent [and] for failure to report suspected child sex abuse.

In the video, created by anti-abortion group "Live Action," the organization's president, Lila Rose, posed as a 14-year-old girl impregnated by her 31-year-old boyfriend. She told employees at the Birmingham Planned Parenthood that she needed to have a secret abortion.

Alabama law requires minors to have signed consent from a parent or legal guardian to have an abortion.

But state health officials found that nine minors, ages 13-15, had received abortions at the Birmingham Planned Parenthood without proper verification of consent since November 2008.

They also cited problems with the reporting of suspected sexual abuse. One of the 13-year-olds who received an abortion said she starting having sex at age 12. She was back at the clinic for another abortion four months later.

The action by the Alabama Department of Health was based on a 38-page report that found that the business's own records revealed it provided an abortion to a 15-year-old although the "mother" giving consent did not have the same last name or address and provided an expired driver's license as ID.

Records for other patients, mostly ages 13 and 14, also revealed the business failed to document properly the identification of those giving parental permission under the state law for the abortions.

In fact, in all nine cases examined by the state involving minor patients, Planned Parenthood, the nation's largest abortion provider, "failed to obtain parental consent … in a manner that complies with state legal requirements."

Worse yet was the conclusion that "neither the registered nurse, the medical doctor, nor any other center staff reported the suspected abuse or neglect [of a 13 year-old child] to the authorities as required by law."

Sex between an adult and a 14-year-old is a felony in Alabama. The pro-life organization said the Birmingham clinic was the seventh Planned Parenthood clinic implicated in a multi-state scandal over the suppression of statutory rape evidence.

Planned Parenthood did not respond to a request from WND for comment.

"The Health Department report documents the same malpractice that we have found in state after state," [Lila] Rose said. "Sexually abused minors are being neglected by Planned Parenthood, which puts its own 'abortion-first mentality' before child protection.

"These are outrageous violations of state law and the Alabama Health Department should revoke the Birmingham Planned Parenthood clinic license. Alabama legislators must also ensure that no tax money is funding Planned Parenthood's illicit activities," she said.

A spokesman with the Jefferson County sheriff's office said, "Anyone who sees [the video] should be disturbed by it."

The state report reveals that Planned Parenthood staffers refused to be interviewed or said they would be interviewed only with legal counsel present.

When investigators were looking into the case, they found other roadblocks.

"During an interview with the center's interim CEO … she was asked, 'What is the official center policy on underage abortions done here?' She responded, 'I would need to have it in front of me before I speak to that.' She was provided with the two documents …. She excused herself and returned saying, 'I need to talk to my lawyer before I can continue,'" the report said.

She handed in her resignation October 6. Johnson worked as the Bryan Planned Parenthood Director for two years.

According to Johnson, the non-profit was struggling under the weight of a tough economy, and changing it's business model from one that pushed prevention, to one that focused on abortion.

"It seemed like maybe that's not what a lot of people were believing any more because that's not where the money was. The money wasn't in family planning, the money wasn't in prevention, the money was in abortion and so I had a problem with that," said Johnson.

Johnson said she was told to bring in more women who wanted abortions, something the Episcopalian church goer recently became convicted about.

Johnson now supports the Coalition For Life, the pro-life group with a building down the street from Planned Parenthood.

Planned Parenthood Indiana Closes Five Clinics

In announcing the clinic closures, Planned Parenthood claims losing some of its federal grant money, but critics suspect other reasons.

The clinics in Anderson, Franklin, Kokomo, Shelbyville and Indianapolis will close over the next six months, Planned Parenthood of Indiana said in a statement provided to The Associated Press . . .

Planned Parenthood expects to lose some of the funding it receives in federal grants administered by the Indiana State Department of Health. The grants were used to help pay some of the costs for patient treatment.

Starting in October, the nonprofit Indiana Family Health Council will take over administering $2 million in grants, some of which previously went to Planned Parenthood. The council will require clinics that receive grants to charge women on a sliding scale depending on their income.

The centers are closing despite the record amount of money the abortion business received from the federal government in the last fiscal year.

The total government grants and contracts received by PPFA affiliates from government sources including state, local and federal governments, increased from $337 million to $350 million.

Looking at Planned Parenthood data from 1997 to the present, the increase in government funding corresponds with an increase in the number of abortions.

The closings also come after videos showed Planned Parenthood centers in Bloomington and Indianapolis covering up a potential case of sexual abuse and urging a young woman to go out of state for an abortion without her parents knowing.

A prior videotape showing the same thing occurring at a Bloomington, Indiana abortion business led to the firing of the staff member involved.

Such a secret abortion would violate Indiana's parental involvement laws.
