Students' Jesus Lunch in Wisc. Public Park Banned

Today, police and atheists will descend upon Fireman's Park in Middleton, Wisconsin where the Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District will confront local parents providing their weekly "Jesus Lunch" for Middleton High School students during their open campus free period.  Although the nearby park is public property, the school claims jurisdiction during school hours and will forbid Christian interaction with students.
"We believe we can be there because it is a public park, and in any public place you have the First Amendment right, which is to have freedom of speech."
-- Melissa Helbach, parent, "Jesus Lunch" organizer since 2014

"The first five minutes or so the moms discuss things about faith and give you something to think about for the day. I see them giving students love, guidance and support and it brings light into students lives who may need to hear positive messages."

The Freedom From Religion Foundation [FFRF] says some of its members will be there to support students who might be demonstrating.

Some parents in the district have been serving a meal to students in Fireman's Park, and then sharing a lesson in Christianity.

The Middleton Police Department says it will have officers near the park during the lunch, so they can intervene if anything gets contentious.

[Critics] say the lunch makes students "uncomfortable" and that it shouldn't be happening on what is considered school property.

Comments on that petition say the issue comes down to the constitutional rights of freedom of religion, and that students enjoy having a discussion about Christianity over their lunch hour.

The school district and city officials said they have proposed moving the lunches to nearby Parisi Park, which is a short walk from the school, but the park facilities are smaller than what the group has now.

"Unless something unforeseen happens, the Jesus Lunch is going to happen this Tuesday and will probably continue until the end of the school year," Middleton police Chief Charles Foulke said in a release on Friday.

From "Middleton-Cross Plains Superintendent urges understanding over 'Jesus Lunch' controversy" by Ogechi Emechebe, The Capital Times 4/16/16

Growing controversy surrounding the “Jesus Lunch” at Middleton High School has prompted an email from Superintendent Don Johnson asking families, students and community members to “remain calm and understanding.”

The school district has asked the parents several times to stop their weekly gatherings, which have attracted as many as 400 students, citing the lunches violate school policy. Fireman’s Park is owned by the city so it’s considered a public space, but the district has a 16 year agreement with the city to lease the property and its rules apply there during the school day.

Parents and students opposing the lunches claim not only does it violate school policy, but see it as adults forcing their faith and religion on students. Peter Opitz, a student at Middleton High School, started a petition called “Tell Jesus Lunch to Follow School Regulations.” As of Friday afternoon, 462 people had signed the petition.

A counter petition of those in support of the lunch was also created, called “Allow Jesus Lunch to continue at Fireman’s Park.” 1,426 supporters had signed the petition as of Friday afternoon, a day after organizers appeared on a Madison conservative talk radio show.

From "Police to Keep Peace at Controversial 'Jesus Lunch' at Wisconsin High School" by Michael Gryboski, Christian Post Reporter 4/18/16

Chief Charles Foulke of the Middleton Police Department released a statement last Friday explaining that officers were going to be present at this week's luncheon.

Officials from the school district and Middleton High recently expressed concerns about the Jesus Lunch gathering, stating in a letter to parents that the events violated certain policies.

"The policies in question include food handling, visitors to campus, and expectations around student organized events. We are in no way interested in opposing religious practice in otherwise legal circumstances," read the letter.

"If students are interested in organizing student led activities, MHS staff are happy to work with them and will convey the district and school policies that govern activities. This, however, appears to be an event initiated by adults without approval by the school."

From "School administrators try to physically block parents from hosting ‘Jesus Lunch’" by Steve Gunn, EAGnews.org 4/15/16

School officials set up cones to block parents from using the parking lot at Fireman’s Park, near Middleton High School, on Tuesday, according to Phil Stamman, an attorney who is representing the mothers involved with the Jesus Lunch program.

The parents ignored school officials’ orders to turn away, according to Stamman. They parked along the street, walked into the park and set up the food for the lunch, anyway, he said.

“They coned up the parking lot, waited there and confronted my clients and told them to leave,” Stamman said. “(The parents) responded how I recommended. They walked right past them. The superintendent repeatedly tried to confront them. He was the first one. But they just moved on.”

“I’ve been talking to a lawyer for the city and my clients and the Alliance Defending Freedom,” [Stamman] said. “We’re reviewing our options. We have not decided how to move forward yet.”

Parents' Lawyer Halts Wisc. School Gay Sneak Attack

Wisconsin liberals are fuming that officials of Mount Horeb Area School District in a small, remote suburb of the liberal-bastion of Madison have caved to so-called homophobic parents who appealed for help from Christian lawyers to stop their elementary school from suddenly launching a transgender indoctrination program on their first-grade children.

On Monday, students at the Mount Horeb Primary Center were scheduled to hear a reading and discussion of “I Am Jazz,” a book about a transgender child.

But the discussion was cancelled after a Christian legal advocacy group threatened the district with a federal lawsuit. The Liberty Council has been listed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center [SPLC] for advocating “anti-LGBT discrimination under the guise of religious liberty.”

In a statement from the Mount Horeb Area School District, Director of Student Services Theresa Daane says the school is providing additional time for parents to review the material.

From "School Plans On Reading Transgender Book, Receives Lawsuit Threat From Parents" by Jean Marie Abellana, iSchoolGuide.com 11/28/15

Earlier this week, a Dane County school became considerate to transgender-related concerns on school activities when it disseminated information to the students' parents notifying about the planned reading and discussion of "I Am Jazz," a children's book that talks about a transgender girl.

The note [to parents] read that the school stood firm on its position where all of its students deserved to be respected and supported regardless of gender expression and identity; hence, it is, therefore, right for them [students] to be educated about the issue of being transgender. It further noted that while the school respects every family's convictions and beliefs, they encouraged the parents to bring out any concerns about their child's participation in the activity.

While there were others who became amenable to the activity, some "concerned parents" have reached out to the Liberty Counsel, a Florida-based group that considered itself as a "non-profit litigation, education, and policy organization," threatening a lawsuit should the school pursue the book reading activity. The parents claimed that such activity was a "violation of parental rights."

. . . The note [to parents], signed by the principal, school psychologist and a counselor, said that the school was working with a student that identifies as a girl but has male anatomy.

Theresa Daane, director of student services for the Mount Horeb Area School District, provided an initial statement on Tuesday after the reading was cancelled, acknowledging "the need for parents to be given the opportunity to consider and discuss information we provide to their children. Accordingly, we intend to balance these needs and allow parents additional time to review the materials we intend to present to students."

Late Wednesday afternoon, the district issued a press release with updated details. It noted that it had "chosen not to proceed as originally planned and allow the Board of Education the opportunity to review the needs of all involved, and address a situation for which the District has no current policy.

From "Re: Inappropriate discussion of gender confusion and sexuality with primary school students" letter to Mount Horeb school district from Liberty Counsel 11/20/15

Dear Board President Seidl:

. . . I write on behalf of concerned parents regarding the attached “Dear Parent” letter that was sent November 19, 2015, to parents of primary school students within the Mount Horeb Area School District (“MHASD” or “the District”).

The letter notifies parents that Principal Rachel Johnson, School Psychologist Nicole Tepe, and School Counselor Emily McKee plan to subject Primary School students to a discussion of gender confusion and sexuality, under the guise of “anti-bullying,” “diversity,” and building a “safe and nurturing environment,” by means of reading to First Graders this coming Monday, November 23, “transgender” activist book “I AM JAZZ”. The letter was sent with one business days’ notice and appears designed to catch parents off-guard, to prevent them from opting their children out of this reading and subsequent discussion.

I hereby request the cancellation of this Monday’s planned reading and discussion, to prevent parental rights violations.

. . . as you may know, “Jazz” Jennings is a male child “transgender” activist, who has been permitted to undergo harmful gender reassignment drug therapy and hormone blockers, resulting in permanent physical changes to his body. The book is a false and misleading book, and the subsequent teaching and discussion will result in [harm to students] . . .

There is no credible medical authority establishing the proposition that biological sex can be changed, or that “mind over matter” is controlling, in areas of identity. The former Chief Psychiatrist for Johns Hopkins Hospital, Dr. Paul McHugh, wrote in a June 12, 2014 Wall Street Journal op-ed that "policy makers and the media are doing no favors either to the public or the transgendered" by not treating transgender "confusions ... as a mental disorder that deserves understanding, treatment and prevention." While students suffering from gender confusion should be treated with kindness and respect, schools should not by their policies or practices attempt to coerce other students and teachers into participating into what amounts to a harmful delusion.

In light of this authority, the District’s letter contains a number of false claims and assumptions to support its course of action. Among these, the letter states that the District is committed to supporting students from a “wide range of...genders” when there are but two genders, male and female. . . .

Among the letter’s false analogies and claims are the following: 1) children are arbitrarily “assigned” a gender at birth, as if the presence of male or female genitalia as the basis for “male” and “female” is an arbitrary decision imposed upon a person; 2) that simply because a child is “born male” but “insists” that child is a girl makes it so; 3) that because a girl likes short hair and likes a “boy” name, she is now a boy; and among the most egregious, 4) that it is possible to have a “girl brain and a boy body.” This claim is completely at odds with the rationale for equality between the sexes: there is no difference between male and female brains or mental abilities, and thus this idea fosters gender stereotypes.

At a minimum, the District’s “plan to support this student in living as ‘her’ authentic self” subjects students to propaganda having no basis in science or reality, to present gender confusion as “normal.” For the record, a mandatory requirement that other students call a boy “her” and “she” infringes upon the other students’ rights to tell the truth, in accordance with their religious convictions, and reality.

Finally, the letter leaves parents to wonder what exactly else is entailed within the “several steps” of the District’s “plan.” Typically, such plans allow gender-confused students to live “authentically” by entering and using the restrooms of the opposite sex. Is it now the policy of the District that the subjective feelings of a child who wishes or thinks he is the opposite sex trumps objective biological and anatomical reality? Is it now district policy that parents and students must accept the unproven belief that “gender identity” is more objectively “real” and more important than is objective biological and anatomical reality?

. . . Boys should leave a bathroom if a girl enters, and girls should leave a bathroom if a boy enters. Boys and girls should not be compelled to use facilities intended for private acts in the presence of those of the opposite sex. Boys have no right to use girls’ restrooms, and girls have no right to use boys’ restrooms. No one has a moral right to compel others to participate in a fiction (including compelling teachers and others to use pronouns that do not correspond to objective biological sex).

The District must cancel this event, and the District must set forth its “plan” so that parents are not subjected to additional surprises like the November 23 propaganda session. The District is not free to override parental rights and religious beliefs, by subjecting impressionable children to confusion about something as important as gender and sexuality. . . .

Kill Baby to Save Mother? No! — Gov. Scott Walker

As the mainstream media set traps to ensnare pro-lifers in the 2016 presidential quest, most conservative candidates bite their tongues to avoid another 2012 "Todd Akin moment."  However, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker boldly answered the "gotcha question" in Thursday's GOP debate:
". . . I’ve got a position I think is consistent with many Americans out there in that I believe that that is an unborn child in need of protection out there, and I’ve said many a time that that unborn child can be protected and there are many other alternatives that will also protect the life of that mother.  That’s been consistently proven."

-- From "GOP candidates: Ban abortion, no exceptions" by Irin Carmon, MSNBC 8/7/15

[FOX News debate] Moderator Megyn Kelly asked Scott Walker how he could justify opposing an exception to an abortion ban in cases where a woman’s life was in danger, though he did sign a bill with such an exception.

. . . Kelly’s question to Walker pointedly played from the left: “Would you really let a mother die rather than have an abortion, and with 83% of the American public in favor of a life exception, are you too out of the mainstream on this issue to win the general election?”

. . . Even for the party long aligned in opposition to the procedure, the issue of exceptions has been politically challenging. Though the Republican party platform calls for a ban without exceptions, previous GOP presidential nominees Mitt Romney, John McCain and George W. Bush generally said they favored such exceptions. The politics around rape and the specter of a woman dying are considered too toxic for a general election.

Moderate Republicans said Friday they are concerned about the potential for Democrats to revive their “war on women” line of attack from 2012, when they successfully portrayed presidential nominee Mitt Romney and other Republicans as out of touch with or even hostile to the concerns of women.

“Republicans have to be careful not to fall into the trap laid by Democrats so successfully in the 2010 election into the 2012 election cycle,” said Steve Schmidt, a former top presidential campaign adviser to Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.).

Democratic National Committee Chairman Debbie Wasserman Schultz on Friday compared the crop of Republican hopefuls to Todd Akin, whose 2012 Senate bid was derailed when he said “legitimate rape” rarely causes pregnancy.

From "Scott Walker calls abortion to save a woman's life a 'false choice'" by Mary Spicuzza of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel 8/8/15

Abortion rights activists say that in some cases, the only option to protect a woman's life is to end her pregnancy.

"It's a false choice. There is always a better option out there," Walker told Fox News' Sean Hannity on Thursday night.

"I've said for years, medically there's always a better choice than choosing between the life of an unborn baby and the life of the mother," he added. "Medically that's just a nonissue."

Walker answered that he has a position on the issue "that's in line with everyday America."

From "Scott Walker signs Wisconsin abortion bill" by Eliza Collins, Politico 7/20/15

The legislation makes performing an abortion a felony punishable by up to three and a half years in prison and $10,000 in fines. The only way abortions after 20 weeks are allowed is if the mother is likely to die or be severely injured.

Late on Monday, Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton attacked Walker on Twitter for the new law, writing, “Gov. Walker signed dangerous abortion restrictions into law in WI - without exceptions for rape or incest. Extreme and unacceptable. -H.”

While Walker has a long history of opposing abortions . . . Walker's record includes defunding Planned Parenthood; requiring abortion doctors to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals, a law currently blocked by a federal court judge; and requiring women to have ultrasounds and be shown images of the fetus before having an abortion.

The governor's signature makes Wisconsin the 15th state to pass similar bans. There is no exception for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest.

"For people, regardless of where they might stand, when an unborn child can feel pain I think most people feel it's appropriate to protect that child," Walker said.

Bans on abortion after 20 weeks are popular, at least on the surface. A Quinnipiac University poll conducted in November of 2014 found that 6 in 10 Americans support banning abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, except in cases of rape or incest.

From "Scott Walker informs Megyn Kelly: Abortion is not necessary to save a mother’s life" by Amanda Read, Live Action News 8/7/15

In 2012, a panel of obstetric and gynecological experts signed the Dublin Declaration, which states that “direct abortion is not medically necessary to save the life of a woman… there is a fundamental difference between abortion, and necessary medical treatments that are carried out to save the life of the mother, even if such treatment results in the loss of life of her unborn child.”

When the mother’s life is at stake, medical actions are taken with the intent to save the woman, not to dispose of the child.

Abortion proponents like to remind us that we’re not living in the 19th century or even the 1950s, but they conveniently forget that means we can handle medically challenging pregnancies and deliveries better than ever before. In a 2004 study from the Alan Guttmacher Institute, only 4% of women cited “physical problem with my health” as reason for getting an abortion. But never has literal abortion actually been necessary to save the life of the mother, and no woman should be made to believe otherwise. This is where definition comes into play, and where media figures like Kelly get it wrong.

To read the entire opinion above, CLICK HERE.

From "The case of 10-year-old Paraguayan pregnant girl and why killing is not the answer" by Lila Rose, Live Action 7/10/15

And that’s the reality: abortion is never medically necessary to save a mother’s life. . . . This is reinforced by the testimony of Dr. Anthony Levatino, a reformed abortionist, who described a typical “life of the mother” case as he saw it:
“During my time at Albany Medical Center I managed hundreds of such cases by ‘terminating’ pregnancies [via live delivery by C-section] to save mothers' lives. In all those hundreds of cases, the number of unborn children that I had to deliberately kill was zero.”
In other words, when a life-in-danger medical condition arises, the solution is not to kill the baby, but to address what’s wrong with the woman. Granted, if we’re talking before viability, this may not always result in the preborn child surviving.

Pope in 17,000 Condoms at Museum in Wisconsin

The Milwaukee Art Museum is proudly displaying a portrait of Pope Benedict XVI made from thousands of colored condoms, and although Catholics are complaining that the so-called artwork is disgusting, insulting, blasphemous, etc., no one plans violence against the museum or anyone involved.  In fact, museum memberships have dramatically increased!
“Our hope is that the piece will bring not only controversy, but room for conversation—about the underlying discussion the artist intended as well as regarding the role of art in public discussion.”

“Eggs Benedict,” created by Niki Johnson, was purchased by a local gay rights advocate for $25,000 and donated to the museum, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports. Johnson says she was inspired by the former pope’s 2009 remarks that condoms would only worsen the problem of AIDS in Africa.

While some like-minded fans of the work have called the museum in support, it has also drawn powerful critics. Milwaukee Archbishop Jerome Listecki has condemned the portrait, and his chief of staff called it “either an intentional attack on a faith tradition and its teachings or a publicity stunt for the artist.” Several longtime friends of the museum have canceled their memberships in protest, and one docent resigned.

“Eggs Benedict” is scheduled to go on display this November after renovations are completed on the museum’s collections galleries; the institution is considering presenting an interfaith panel on debate around the work.

The museum reportedly noted that it has received over 200 complaints about the portrait, and said that a handful of patrons have dropped their membership as a result of the controversy. It insisted, however, that the point of the art piece is to get people to think about Benedict's opposition to condoms as a method of birth control, which is a position upheld by the Vatican.

"This was never intended to be derisive, mocking or disrespectful of the pope," said museum board of trustees president Don Layden. "It was to have a conversation about AIDS and AIDS education. And my hope is when the piece appears in the museum that will be the focus of the discussion."

"Why did I buy it? I did not buy it because I thought it was beautiful," [local philanthropist and homosexualist Joseph] Pabst explained. "I bought it because I thought it was provocative and I thought it was important. ... This piece has work to do. It has to make people think and have discussions."

When it was first unveiled at the Portrait Society Gallery in Milwaukee in 2013, the piece drew international attention — and condemnation from many quarters. Titled "Eggs Benedict," it was inspired by comments made by the pope during a 2009 visit to Africa in which he suggested that the use of condoms could exacerbate the spread of AIDS.

Controversy around the portrait subsided until news of the acquisition and planned prominent display became public June 16.

Jerry Topczewski, chief of staff for [Archbishop] Listecki, called [museum director Layden's] explanation "a smoke screen."

"What's at play here is either an intentional attack on a faith tradition and its teachings or a publicity stunt for the artist," he said. "And we would be opposed to any faith tradition or religious leader being attacked in such a way."

"It seems like in the world of art, the last bastion of acceptable prejudice is Catholic Christians," said Kathleen Arenz of River Hills, a longtime docent who expressed her disappointment to the museum.

Critics have questioned whether the museum would display a similar piece that Muslims or Jews would find offensive.

A spokeswoman said the Milwaukee museum has sold a record a number of memberships in recent days.

[Artist] Johnson said her decision to illustrate Pope Benedict with condoms was designed to normalize conversations about safe sex. She also said the resulting attention has helped her further her advocacy in this field.

Wisc. Prof. Threatens Student for her Christianity

Lawyers representing Rachel Langeberg are demanding an apology from sociology Professor Annette Kuhlman of the University of Wisconsin-Baraboo/Sauk County for threatening to fail Langeberg if she referenced Bible verses in a group presentation regarding sociological perspectives.
“ . . . we are living in a society that separates church and state; the University of Wisconsin is a secular institution.  Religious contemplations and the bible [sic] belong to a different realm and not academic sources.  So your argumentation along Christian lines . . . are inappropriate for this presentation.  I will not allow you to present unless you change this.  You will also fail your presentation if your [sic] discuss religion in connection with it.”

-- From "Student allegedly threatened with failing grade for including Biblical references in group presentation" by Gabriella Morrongiello, Reporter, Campus Reform 6/25/15

In a recent letter to administrators at the University of Wisconsin-Baraboo/Sauk County, the Liberty Counsel—a nonprofit, conservative litigation group—accused sociology Professor Annette Kuhlman of expressing “unconstitutional hostility toward religious belief” in her spring semester Crime and Criminal Justice course.

According to the Liberty Counsel, a draft of the group presentation sent to Professor Kuhlman included a section in which Langeberg used the Judeo-Christian theory of human nature—which asserts that humans are sinful both in practice and by nature—as one explanation for why individuals commit arson.

Langeberg subsequently chose to omit the religious references from her presentation to avoid failing the assignment and putting her group members’ grades at risk. . . .

According to the Counsel, Langeberg’s attempt to meet with school’s dean, Dr. Tracy White, and Kuhlman were unsuccessful, which led her to seek legal representation.

UW-Baraboo/Sauk County did not respond to Campus Reform’s request for comment.

To read the entire article above, CLICK HERE.

From "Unconstitutional censorship of student speech and discrimination on the basis of religion" letter by Liberty Counsel to Dean Tracy White, University of Wisconsin Baraboo - Sauk County 6/23/15

Ms. Langeberg felt that she had no choice but to comply [with Dr. Kuhlman's direction], because the grades of her two classmates also depended on the assignment, and she could not place their grades at risk.  Based on these threats from Professor Kuhlman, Ms. Langeberg changed the assignment, removing the material about competing worldviews and the causes of the crime of arson, which resulted in a presentation that deprived the class of the richness of diverse ideological perspectives. Indeed, a "theist perspective" on the causes of crime - "the heart...is desperately wicked," and that "from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying and slander" - is just as valid a position as various sociological perspectives. Ms. Langeberg's position that "juvenile arsonists commit crime because they are naturally inclined to do wrong" makes more sense than various theories that seek to absolve the arsonist of moral responsibility, whether due to "strain" on the individual, or "environmental factors" being the cause of crime," or that "lack of intelligence" causes crime.  Ms. Langeberg's conclusion accurately contrasts the two perspectives: the "secular humanist says additional research is needed as to why juvenile arson happens" in order to prevent it; while the "theist says juvenile arson happens because people are naturally inclined to violate laws or sin," and therefore, people need to be "taught the moral principles of the Bible to prevent arson."

It was highly inappropriate for Dr. Kuhlman to censor this team's work and perspective on the issue, in its original form, based on incorrect and discriminatory statements about the law and religious belief. The Constitution does not “require complete separation of church and state; it affirmatively mandates accommodation, not merely tolerance, of all religions, and forbids hostility toward any.” . . .

In the academic context of reports or presentations, when a student gives a report within the parameters of the assignment, a school is prohibited from restricting the report, or threatening a failing grade, solely because the content is religious. . . .

Liberty Counsel is deeply concerned by the facts of this situation. Your ratification of Dr. Kuhlman's conduct indicates that institutional discrimination on the basis of religion extends further than one professor. Dr. Kuhlman (and all University professors) must respect the rights of students, and cease from religiously discriminatory treatment of students providing academically responsive presentations, in accordance with course syllabi.

Demand is hereby made 1) that Dr. Kuhlman email a written apology to Ms. Langeberg's team for censoring their presentation based on her perception of and hostility toward religion; and 2) that Dr. Kuhlman email a written apology along with the original PowerPoint, to the rest of the class, stating that she made a mistake in the law, that academically-responsive assignments mentioning religion in a compare/contrast manner are appropriate, and that she hopes that they will review the team's original work to receive that team's original perspective.

If the University does not comply with this demand by Friday, July 3, 2015, Liberty Counsel will take further action to prevent irreparable harm to the rights of our client, who expressly reserves all rights.

Please be governed accordingly.

Sincerely,
Richard L. Mast, Jr., Esq

Wisc. Catholic College Welcomes Abortion Feminist

Despite objections by thousands of alumni, students, and even Bishop David Ricken, President Thomas Kunkel at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin invited pro-abortion, anti-family activist Gloria Steinem to speak Tuesday night because, as Kunkel said, it's important that students see and hear, in person, those who oppose Church teachings.
“. . . the connection of abortion rights to the feminist agenda is a sad one and calls into question the logic” of inviting Steinem.
-- Bishop David Ricken, Diocese of Green Bay

“Why are the same groups against lesbians and birth control? The patriarchal system… controls reproduction and says it’s only moral and okay when sexuality... can end in reproduction. And everything else is wrong. That means sexual expression between two men or two women, it means women’s ability to control it ourselves [is wrong].”

Kunkel says regardless of the religious affiliation, a college should present all sides of an argument.

“I respect where people are coming from on this. But we feel that we are a college and part of what we do is you have people from all walks come to campus. It doesn’t mean that you necessarily endorse everything they say or what they stand for,” said Kunkel.

When asked [Tuesay night] how she became a feminist, Steinem recounted covering an abortion hearing as a journalist in the 1960s.

“Why is it illegal, why is it dangerous, who owns women’s bodies,” said Steinem.

Steinem, who has stated that her own abortion at 22 was a positive experience and said abortion would be considered a “sacrament” if men got pregnant, was invited by St. Norbert to speak about domestic violence.

TFP Student Action, a project of the American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family and Property, tried to get St. Norbert to cancel Steinem’s appearance by circulating a petition that drew nearly 28,000 signatures.

“How on earth can a woman like Gloria Steinem who has such a public pro-abortion and anti-Catholic record be invited to give a lecture at a Catholic institute [sic], which ought to be a cornerstone in the defense of innocent life and moral values?” the group said.

From "Feminist Steinem Touts Abortion, Ridicules Church at St. Norbert College" by Kimberly Scharfenberger, The Cardinal Newman Society 4/29/15

Abortion advocacy, support for euthanasia and applause for excommunicated and “ordained” women priests—such were the highlights of last week’s “dialogue” with radical feminists Gloria Steinem and Bell Hooks on the Catholic campus of St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wis.

Nevertheless the College went forward, and the activists’ dialogue, titled “Talking Together: A Legacy of Solidarity,” predictably highlighted contempt for “patriarchal religions” and pushed support for abortion rights and euthanasia. A video of their dialogue indicates that Steinem and Hooks barely touched on the subject of domestic violence but focused instead on “reproductive rights” and societal ills caused by the patriarchy.

Thomas Kunkel, president of St. Norbert College, opened the event, welcoming the more than 800 participants who reportedly attended.

“As the face of the women’s movement… Gloria Steinem leaves us in awe,” said Dr. Karlyn Crowley, professor of English, as she introduced Steinem.

Hooks is frequently hosted as a teacher-in-residence at St. Norbert College. Last year, the College even presented the “year of bell hooks” which featured “programs that celebrate bell hooks, the prolific scholar, social justice advocate, feminist and canonical writer.” In her book Feminism is For Everybody, Hooks claimed that “one cannot be anti-abortion and an advocate of feminism.” She also declared that “without the right to safe, inexpensive, and free abortions [women] lose all control over their bodies.”

From "St. Norbert College and the Catholic vision of life" by Bishop David Ricken, The Compass News, Inc. 1/8/15

Several months ago, I received many letters, emails, calls and complaints about St. Norbert College’s invitation to Gloria Steinem to give a presentation on their campus. . . .

. . . I find the invitation of Steinem to be quite mystifying. . . . It would be so refreshing if we heard the leadership and faculty use these new voices to help our young people live a life of integrity and holiness and to truly embrace life and peace for the most innocent of all.

Catholic vision and teaching are truly liberating if they are integrated into the life of a college campus. How refreshing it would be if St. Norbert College were to decide to be a vibrant Catholic College that embraces the church and her teaching in its entirety, not just the social justice teachings (which SNC does so well), but also the doctrinal and moral teaching of the Gospel and the church. Rather than excusing it by finding ways to reason around it or to argue against it, why not embrace it with a real and comprehensive intentionality?

The invitation of Ms. Steinem gives the impression that the college may be merely giving lip service to the fundamental value of every human life instead of embracing the “Gospel of Life” with a clear intentionality.

Long live the “Gospel of Life” and those who defend it unapologetically!

Students Required to Pretend Being Muslim in Wisc.

10th-grade world history teacher Beth Urban at Union Grove (Wisconsin) High School assigned her students to imagine they were Muslim and describe how difficult it would be to live in America based on recent (propaganda) documentaries.  Ms. Urban did NOT require the students to write about ongoing genocide of Christians in Muslim countries.
“The more I look into this [assignment], I do think it needs to be modified some for next year. But I need to let this die down some first.”

According to the e-mail obtained by popular radio show host Vicki McKenna, the students were to write a five paragraph essay pretending to be a Muslim. . . . The assignment begs to have a few questions answered.

First of all, what documentaries were watched and who produced them?  The Middle East is known for producing several “documentaries” that are full of propaganda and anti-American sentiment.  Is that truly the type of video that our students should be exposed to?  Were there other videos shown to balance the debate on the subject?

Is this assignment a conflict between separation of church and state?  There have been many documented cases of Christian students being denied the ability to pray in public school and today’s history books have been mostly stripped of Christian history.  Why is Christianity allowed to be shunned in our public schools while teachers are allowed to assign an assignment as religious based as this?

A public high school in small-town Wisconsin is under fire for giving students an assignment in which they are to pretend they are Christians and give examples of the hardships they face — getting bullied by public school teachers for reading the Bible, for example, or the inability to start a campus club.

No, wait. Scratch that. That didn’t happen. That’s totally wrong.

The assignment asked students to pretend they are Muslims, reports EAGnews.org.

“I feel that the purpose of the assignment is to show prejudices towards Muslims in America or to invent them or exaggerate them,” one parent who fears being identified told EAGnews.

Al Mollerskov, district superintendent for Union Grove Schools in Union Grove, Wisconsin, told WND he received nearly 50 calls from irate people all over the country after the story was reported Wednesday on Fox News and many conservative websites.

WND asked the superintendent if the school has given a writing assignment asking students to put themselves in the place of Christians living in a Muslim-majority country such as Iraq or Syria. No such assignment was given, Mollerskov said.

Mollerskov said this was a “point of view” assignment, where the student is asked to write from someone else’s perspective, in this case a Muslim living in America.

Mollerskov said the teacher is covering five major world religions in a world history class over a single semester. The intent is to give students an “overview” of how Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism and Hinduism developed in history. “This was a snippet, not an in-depth study,” he said.

Atheists' Sanctuary City Created: Madison, Wisc.

The liberal stronghold of Madison, Wisconsin has become the first city in the nation to recognize the nonreligious as a protected class of citizens.  The Madison-based Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), along with other atheists, spoke at the city council in favor of the proposed ordinance, but not a single citizen spoke in opposition; the ordinance passed unanimously.
"This is important because I believe it is only fair that if we protect religion, in all its varieties, we should also protect nonreligion from discrimination. It's only fair."

Gaylor said she hopes Madison's move spurs a national movement that will inspire others, including the State of Wisconsin, to pass similar measures.

“It was something I’ve been thinking about for quite a while,” Weier said. “I’m not running for reelection, so it’s something that I wanted to get passed before I left office. Anyone who was seeking reelection might not have introduced it.”

The ban was added to an existing equal-opportunity ordinance, which protects people from discrimination based on a list of factors, including race, gender, sexual orientation and gender identity. The March 31 vote added the phrase “religion or non-religion” to the ordinance, which applies to employment, housing and public accommodations.

Although the Constitution prohibits government office seekers from a religious litmus test, people who don’t believe in God are banned from office in six southern states and Maryland. Non-believers say they frequently face discrimination, and a 2012 Gallup poll found that Americans are more likely to vote for gays or Muslims than atheists.

UW graduate student, and former Atheists Humanists and Agnostics president Chris Calvey was among the five atheists speaking in favor of the proposals.

They told the council stories of housing, employment, volunteer, community, and parental custody discrimination because of their non-belief in God, saying that fact has no bearing on their character, values or what type of job they do.

"Having it on the books, where we're legally a protected class, that'll make things much easier for atheists," Calvey said. "And we'll be able to be confident that at least if we're honest about what we actually believe, then we have the law backing us up so we can't legally be discriminated against."

"It's really making a big statement that we're not going to put up with discrimination in the name of God. That being a believer doesn't mean you can discriminate," Freedom From Religion Foundation co-founder Annie Laurie Gaylor said.

Arrested Wisc. Preteens Threw Sex Party, Filmed It

Four students, possibly aged as young as 11, met by police at Brown Deer (Wisconsin) Middle School, are facing charges of criminal sexual assault of a child based on video evidence captured by children attending a party with classmates at a private residence.

Planned Parenthood Wisconsin told WDJT Channel 58 in Milwaukee that the incident demonstrates that children are in need of more sex information.

Officials at Planned Parenthood Wisconsin say it's important for parents to have an open discussion with their children about sex.

Marquette Bans Conservative Prof, Like a Terrorist

The Catholic Jesuit Marquette University has suspended (with pay) 37-year Professor John McAdams and banned him from the campus "like a potential terrorist," he says, because he blogged criticism of pro-homosexual philosophy instructor Cheryl Abbate for her censoring a student who criticized the notion of homosexual "marriage."
“[E]veryone agrees on” gay marriage, “there is no need to discuss it” — gay students might be offended by such “homophobic comments or racist comments.”

McAdams, who teaches political science, was notified by email Tuesday that he was relieved of his duties until further notice and was not to come to campus without advance written permission from his dean.

The controversy apparently began with a post McAdams wrote in his Marquette Warrior blog Nov. 9 in which he criticized a graduate student teaching assistant for not allowing discussion of gay marriage in an ethics class.

A student challenged her decision after class and recorded the conversation. The student told teaching assistant Cheryl Abbate that it was his right as an American citizen to make arguments against gay marriage, and she replied: "You don't have a right in this class to make homophobic comments."

Unfortunately, given that Wisconsin law bans sexual orientation discrimination, and that discrimination laws have been read as banning “hostile environment harassment” — including political and social commentary that offends people based on race, religion, sex and (in those states that cover this) sexual orientation discrimination — there is indeed a risk that such speech by co-workers would be found to be unlawful. . . .

From "Marquette University Suspends Tenured Professor After He Criticized Instructor Who Prohibited Student From Discussing Gay Marriage Opposition" by Samuel Smith, Christian Post Reporter 12/19/14

Associate Professor John McAdams' suspension with pay comes as Marquette University has begun requiring its faculty to attend anti-harassment training, where they are instructed to report any employee that speaks out in opposition to gay marriage.

"Although employees have free speech rights under the United States Constitution, in academic and other workplaces those rights are limited when they infringe upon another person's right to work in an environment free of unlawful harassment," the school's anti-harassment training video, produced by the Texas-based Workplace Answers, asserts.

"Abbate, of course, was just using a tactic typical among liberals now," McAdams wrote. "Opinions with which they disagree are not merely wrong, and are not to be argued against on their merits, but are deemed 'offensive' and need to be shut up."

Additionally in his blog post, McAdams criticized the school and deemed it "not a Catholic university" for not permitting discussion and debate on gay marriage in class.

From "Marquette Philosophy Instructor: 'Gay Rights' Can’t Be Discussed in Class Since Any Disagreement Would Offend Gay Students" by John McAdams, Marquette Warrior 11/9/14

Abbate explained that “some opinions are not appropriate, such as racist opinions, sexist opinions” and then went on to ask “do you know if anyone in your class is homosexual?” And further “don’t you think it would be offensive to them” if some student raised his hand and challenged gay marriage? The point being, apparently that any gay classmates should not be subjected to hearing any disagreement with their presumed policy views.

Then things deteriorated further as the student said that it was his right as an American citizen to make arguments against gay marriage. Abbate replied that “you don’t have a right in this class to make homophobic comments.”

She went on “In this class, homophobic comments, racist comments, will not be tolerated.” She then invited the student to drop the class.

. . . in the politically correct world of academia, one is supposed to assume that all victim groups think the same way as leftist professors.

Groups not favored by leftist professors, of course, can be freely attacked, and their views (or supposed views) ridiculed. Christians and Muslims are not allowed to be “offended” by pro-gay comments.

'Gay Marriage' Battle Seeks Supreme (Court) Savior

As yet another federal appeals court overruled majority voters in states defining natural marriage, thirty-two state governments are now formally pleading that the U.S. Supreme Court decide the matter once and for all, thus leading to a potential watershed moment in U.S. history:  Will nine unelected judges successfully exert totalitarian rule over all fifty states and millions of citizens, or will the Constitution prevail?

-- From "32 States Ask Supreme Court to Settle Gay Marriage" by The Associated Press 9/5/14

Fifteen states that allow gay marriage, led by Massachusetts, filed a brief asking the justices to take up three cases from Virginia, Utah and Oklahoma and overturn bans. And 17 other states, led by Colorado, that have banned the practice asked the court to hear cases from Utah and Oklahoma to clear up a "morass" of lawsuits, but didn't urge the court to rule one way or another.

Massachusetts was joined by California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Vermont, and Washington.

Colorado's brief argued that the definition of marriage faces legal challenges only the Supreme Court can resolve, and that without a Supreme Court decision, states defending bans could be liable for huge legal bills from future lawsuits if they are overturned. It was written by Daniel D. Domenico, the state's solicitor general, and Michael Lee Francisco, assistant solicitor general.

Colorado was joined by Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Georgia, Idaho, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

From "Court rules against Wisconsin's, Indiana's gay marriage bans" by Jason Stein and Patrick Marley, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel 9/4/14

The [unanimous] decision by a three-judge panel of the U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals [in Chicago] upholds lower federal court decisions in Madison and Indianapolis and helps set up a seemingly inevitable ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court on whether gay marriage bans violate the U.S. Constitution. In the meantime, the decision does not immediately take effect, but it does increase at least marginally the chances that Wisconsin's case is heard by the nation's highest court.

The decision for Indiana and Wisconsin is different from others because the judges based their ruling on arguments that the same-sex marriage bans violated the right to equal protection under the law, [whereas] . . . Other rulings have centered on the right of gay and lesbian couples to due process.

GOP Gov. Scott Walker had no comment on the decision while Dana Brueck, a spokeswoman for Wisconsin Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen, a Republican, said the state will appeal.

Julaine Appling, president of Wisconsin Family Action and a vocal supporter of the gay marriage ban, said she was surprised by the speed of the decision, but not the outcome, after hearing the judges' views during arguments last week.

"Essentially what the judges are saying is the 1.26 million voters who voted on this in 2006 are a bunch of homophobic, irrational bigots," Appling said. "I absolutely don't believe that, but that's what the judges are saying."
