Oscars Revoke Christian Song - Joni Eareckson Tada

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences chose the low-budget Christian movie Alone Yet Not Alone for its first-ever revocation of an Oscar nomination on ethical grounds.  The nomination of the film's title song, performed by quadriplegic Christian singer and leading evangelist Joni Eareckson Tada, has been criticized for associations with "anti-gay" personalities.
"If the academy is just hoping they can keep quiet and this story will go away, they need to find a different strategy."

The academy discovered that composer Bruce Broughton emailed members of the group’s music branch during the voting period to make them aware of his submission.

Broughton is a member of the music branch’s executive committee and a former governor for the academy.

Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs said Wednesday that using a position within the organization to promote one’s Oscar submission creates the appearance of an unfair advantage.

. . . the action has prompted criticism that the academy has cracked down on a small movie that can't compete with big-budget Oscar campaigns mounted by studios. "Alone Yet Not Alone," from a film of the same name about 18th century Colonists in the Ohio Valley, is a low-budget, faith-based movie that features an iconic quadriplegic pastor.

Veteran awards consultant Cynthia Swartz says she doesn't understand how Broughton's email was different from any number of other things that the academy allows during campaigning for Oscar nominations. Producers and studio executives, she notes, routinely send email invitations to friends for screenings of their movies, events that also include refreshments.

In an interview, pastor Eareckson Tada said she was unsure what to make of the academy's decision.

"If it was for reasons connected with a faith-based message, it shouldn't surprise us that Hollywood would shun Jesus," she said. "Jesus has been shunned by much weedier characters."

From "Academy Disqualifies Joni Eareckson Tada's Oscar-Nominated Song from Christian Movie" by Kate Tracy, Christianity Today 1/30/14

Since nominations were announced, the song—performed by quadriplegic Christian author and speaker Joni Eareckson Tada—drew criticism and confusion from Hollywood for beating out musicians featured in more popular films. The latest news stokes the debate even further, given that Oscar lobbying and campaigning are arguably common practices.

The nomination has received negative reactions not for its quality, but for the film's endorsements by James Dobson, Rick Santorum, and Josh Dugger, executive director of Family Resource Council Action, among others. Film.com framed the movie as endorsed by "anti-gay hate group activists," while the Boston Globe headline reads, "The Oscar nomination that stinks to heaven." Hitflix writes: "There were audible gasps and chuckles when Cheryl Boone Isaacs began reading the list of nominees in the category, and first off the bat was "Alone Yet Not Alone" from, er, Alone Yet Not Alone…It doesn't seem a stretch to call this Christian drama the most obscure feature film nominated for an Oscar this year."

. . . The film will be released in theaters nationwide this June.

“I was grateful for the attention the nomination brought to this worthy song and the inspirational film behind it,” said Tada, who is founder and CEO of Joni and Friends International Disability Center.

The nomination brought attention to “the ongoing work of Joni and Friends to people affected by disabilities,” she said. “The decision by the Academy to rescind the nomination may well bring even further attention, and I only hope it helps to further extend the message and impact of the song.”

A diving accident in 1967 left Joni Eareckson, then 17, a quadriplegic, without the use of her hands. During her rehabilitation, she learned how to paint with a brush between her teeth, and she has since become a well-known artist. She is the author of an autobiography, “Joni,” which was made into a feature film in 1979, with Tada playing herself.

The nomination of Alone Yet Not Alone surprised many, since the film, which details how the Christian faith sustained a family captured by the Delaware Indians during the French-Indian War, had a limited release before a tiny audience. It will be released in full later this year.

“Regarding the reasons for the nomination being rescinded, it is not my place to speculate as I have no insights into the workings of the entertainment industry,” she said. “If it were for reasons connected with the faith-based message of this film, we shouldn’t be surprised that Hollywood shuns Christ and His message. He was shunned by weightier adversaries than those in the field of entertainment.”

The nomination of a song by a singer with 51 percent of her lung capacity showed the possibilities inherent in any disabled person, she said.

Atheists' Super Bowl Ad Attacks Christians, Prayer

The enemy of God has launched another salvo in the age-old battle of evil vs. good, this time using the American Atheists organization with a new advertisement for the NFL Super Bowl.

This year a new brand of advertising makes its way to Metlife Stadium, and it's encouraging sports fans to do anything but pray for the teams they love.

“Prayer is superstition, plain and simple,” said David Silverman, President of American Atheists, which has launched an anti-prayer billboard directly across from the Super Bowl stadium.

With the message, "A 'Hail Mary' only works in football," the billboard mocks the common Christian prayer used to ask for the Virgin Mary's intercession. Some may find the billboard to be offensive and even proselytizing, and, well, they'd be right.

From "American Atheists' Super Bowl Billboard Makes Fun of 'Hail Mary' Prayer" by Stoyan Zaimov, Christian Post Reporter 1/29/14

"[Prayer] trivializes the dedication of the players and takes away from their achievements. A third of football fans pray in hopes of helping their team. These are adults we're talking about – people with children, people with careers, people who vote. It's 2014; it's time to stop believing that prayer works. Give credit where credit is due and celebrate what this is really about-coming together to cheer on hard-working athletes doing what they do best," [Silverman said in a statement].

The billboard prompted State Sen. Andrew Lanza from Staten Island, N.Y., to run a petition calling for the "immediate withdrawal" of the ad as it lacks "decency, civility and kindness."

"It seems to me that this is part of a continued 'War on Christmas' and also upon the belief and value system of millions of Christian, Jewish and Muslim people who have faith in God," Lanza commented. "Religious persecution of the kind that similarly led to the Holocaust began with small baby steps of ridicule and hatred of the religious beliefs of others."

ACLU Sues Louisiana School for Overt Christianity

As a public school, the Sabine Parish School Board says it will vigorously defend freedom of religion regarding a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and the ACLU of Louisiana charging that a teacher, backed by school administrators, harassed a sixth-grade Buddhist student and suggested to parents that their son should be transferred to a school with more Asians.

Superintendent Sara Ebarb was unavailable Wednesday for comment, but on a statement released by the board on Thursday reads, "The Sabine Parish School Board has only recently been made aware of the lawsuit filed by the ACLU. A lawsuit only represents one side's allegations, and the board is disappointed that the ACLU chose to file suit without even contacting it regarding the facts.

The school system recognizes the rights of all students to exercise the religion of their choice and will defend the lawsuit vigorously."

According to the complaint . . . His science teacher, Rita Roark, has repeatedly taught students that the Earth was created by God 6,000 years ago, that evolution is "impossible," and that the Bible is "100 percent true."

Beyond Roark's classroom, the school also regularly incorporates official Christian prayer into class and school events. School officials display religious iconography throughout hallways and classrooms, including a large portrait of Jesus Christ, and an electronic marquee in front of the school scrolls Bible verses as students enter the building.

When the Lanes objected to these practices, Sabine Parish Superintendent Sara Ebarb told them that, "this is the Bible belt." She suggested that C.C. should "change" his faith and advised the Lanes that their only recourse was to transfer him to another district school 25 miles away where, in her words, "there are more Asians." Ultimately, C.C.'s parents did transfer him to another school to protect him, but school officials there also unconstitutionally promote religion.

Secret ObamaCare Abortion Fees Make Pres. a Liar

Four years ago, President Obama's signature healthcare reform bill nearly tanked among key Democrats because the legislation didn't prohibit explicit funding of abortion, and so the President promised that he would personally ensure that Americans were not forced to pay for other people's decisions to kill their babies.
“We knew that was an empty promise as the bill stipulated a $1 a month surcharge for plans that covered abortions.  On top of that … it’s near impossible to decipher which plans include abortion and at what cost!”

-- From "Secret abortion fees hidden in Obamacare premiums" posted at Hawaii Reporter by Tori Richards of Watchdog.org 1/27/14

Insurance companies working under the Obamacare umbrella have secretly added a surcharge to cover the cost of abortions, an apparent violation of federal law that forbids the practice, congressional leaders charge.

To fix this, a House bill will be introduced this week to demand full disclosure and a separate itemized premium. It also will prohibit federal subsidies for Obamacare insurance plans that cover abortion. That bill, HR-7, or the “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act,” will be introduced by House Majority Leader Eric Cantor.

On Oct. 9, Rep. Chris Smith, R-NJ, introduced a bill on the disclosure issue, which now has been folded into the broader HR-7. Smith is co-chairman of the Bipartisan Congressional Pro-Life Caucus.

Smith has discovered that the states of Maryland, New York and Washington have flouted the law by telling insurance companies they don’t need to itemize the charge for consumers.

. . . The measure is expected to pass in the House and be stopped in the Senate.

The legislation combines several policies that must be enacted every year in Congressional battles and puts them into law where they will not be in jeopardy of being overturned every time Congress changes hands from pro-life lawmakers to those who support abortions. The House Judiciary Committee Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice approved the bill earlier this month.

Congressman Chris Smith, a New Jersey Republican who is the bill sponsor, talked about the legislation during his March for Life speech:

“To rid Obamacare of its massive expansion of public funding for abortion insurance plans—and to make existing policies like the Hyde Amendment permanent–ask your senators and member of the House to support the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act co-sponsored by 165 House Members and a quarter of the Senate,” he said.

“I don’t think there’s any greater war on women anywhere in the world than abortion on demand,” Rep. Trent Franks told msnbc this morning, shortly after a subcommittee hearing on HR7, the so-called No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act. The bill would ban federal subsidies and tax benefits to private insurance plans if they cover abortion, broadening the scope of the Hyde Amendment, which already largely prohibits taxpayer funding for abortion.

As for the so-called GOP rebrand, Franks, who has often championed such legislation, said, “There are very few issues that are more important to the Republican [party] foundation than protecting innocent human life.” He added, “If somehow now we should let that central pillar of who we are as a party crumble, we would simply go the way of the Whigs.”

Biblical Beliefs Unacceptable to GOP IL Leaders

The Illinois GOP has denounced the Christian beliefs of Susanne Atanus, a Republican candidate for Illinois' 9th congressional district.  Atanus says that natural disasters and myriad diseases are a reflection of God's omnipotence and thus a direct result of growing acceptance of sexual sin and the murdering of children in the womb.
"The offensive statements by Susanne Atanus have no place in the modern political debate, and she has no place on the ballot as a Republican. Her candidacy is neither supported nor endorsed by the leaders of our party, and she should withdraw from the race immediately.”

"I am not in favor of abortions, I am not in favor of gay rights," Atanus, who has staged two previous unsuccessful runs for Congress, said during a videotaped portion of the interview, before going into more detail with the paper.

"God is angry. We are provoking him with abortions and same-sex marriage and civil unions," she added, blaming natural disasters like tornadoes and diseases including autism and dementia on recent advances in the LGBT movement. "Same-sex activity is going to increase AIDS. If it's in our military it will weaken our military. We need to respect God."

Adam Robinson, chairman of the Chicago Republican Party, emphasized in another statement that Atanus "is not in any way affiliated with any of our efforts in the Chicago GOP, nor have we ever supported, endorsed, or assisted her in any way at any time."

Voters in the Republican primary will have two very different candidates to choose from in the 9th Congressional District, as David Earl Williams III and Susanne Atanus vie for the right to face Rep. Jan Schakowsky in the fall.

. . . Atanus, who lives in Niles and has both an MBA and master's in public administration but is working full time on her campaign, the top issue is the economy. She maintains that ridding the nation of the stock indexes including the S&P, Dow Jones and Nasdaq would improve the nation's fiscal troubles.

"I am a conservative Republican and I believe in God first," Atanus said. She said she believes God controls the weather and has put tornadoes and diseases such as autism and dementia on earth as in response to gay rights and legalized abortions.

The interview stated that Atanus "believes God controls the weather and has put tornadoes and diseases such as autism and dementia on earth as punishment for gay rights and legalized abortions."

The 55-year-old Conservative has already run unsuccessfully for the seat of Illinois's 9th District twice in 2010 and 2012.  Atanus plans to implement her core beliefs into the government if elected. Aside from her religious beliefs, Atanus hopes to reconstruct the main issue in her agenda, which is the economy. "I'm upset with us having no economy for the 99 percent," Atanus said. "The middle class has been robbed."

From "Parties Seize on Abortion Issues in Midterm Race" by Jeremy W. Petersjan, New York Times 1/20/14

Abortion is becoming an unexpectedly animating issue in the 2014 midterm elections. Republicans, through state ballot initiatives and legislation in Congress, are using it to stoke enthusiasm among core supporters. Democrats, mindful of how potent the subject has been in recent campaigns like last year’s governor’s race in Virginia, are looking to rally female voters by portraying their conservative opponents as callous on women’s issues.

Aware that their candidates at times have struck the wrong tone on issues of women’s health, Republicans in some states are now framing abortion in an economic context, arguing, for example, that the new federal health law uses public money to subsidize abortion coverage. In the House in the coming weeks, Republicans will make passing the “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act” one of their top priorities this year.

“I don’t think this is a niche issue anymore,” said Drew Lieberman, a vice president at Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research, a political consultancy concern, who has advised Democratic congressional candidates and has done polling for Naral Pro-Choice America.

Sen. Bill Carrico’s SB 236 is written to allow student prayer and permit the formation of religious clubs. It would also require forums for faith speech at school events, and specifies that students can wear clothes or jewelry with spiritual iconography or messages.

Carrico said the bill provides legal cover to schools and protects the constitutional right of “each and every student to express their beliefs according to the dictates of their conscience” without giving “preferential treatment” to any one religion.

Democratic senators argued that the bill is unconstitutional and potentially coercive.

[Sen.] Carrico called it an “anti-discrimination” bill, saying it would put religious expression on an equal footing with secular expression.

The bill also said schools must adopt policies that would let student speakers pray or express religious viewpoints at any event — like graduation or a ball game — where students are allowed to speak.

Sen. Adam Ebbin, D-Alexandria, said the bill’s practical effect will be to protect Christianity at the expense of other religions.

Sen. Tom Garrett, R-Louisa, said the bill is needed because students now are being discouraged from religious speech in school.

The Senate’s 20-18 vote was a victory for Republican Sen. Bill Carrico, R-Grayson County, one of the General Assembly’s most persistent advocates for allowing prayer and religious expression in public settings. The final vote broke largely along party lines. Just one Democrat, Sen. Phillip Puckett of Russell County, supported the bill. Sen. John Watkins of Powhatan was the only Republican to oppose it.

“When they’re doing assignments, when they work so hard to become valedictorian of their class, they shouldn’t be censored by the school system as to how they express themselves when they speak,” Carrico said. “This bill is nothing more than the protection of the students, while they’re at school, to able to do those things.”

Carrico’s bill (SB 236) now goes to the Republican-dominated House of Delegates, where he expects it to get a friendly reception.

“Now we’ll see how the governor reacts to it,” Carrico said after today’s floor vote.

Archbishop Fernando Sebastian Aguilar said Sunday that homosexuality was a "defect" that needed to be addressed so that homosexuals could find a way to cure themselves going forward.

"Our bodies have many defects. I have high blood pressure," said Aguilar, "It's a defect that I have to try and correct in whatever way I can...To say that homosexuality is a defect is not an insult: it helps because in many cases of homosexuality it is possible to recover and become normal with the right treatment."

The cardinal's comments were immediately condemned by Spanish gay rights group Colegas.

From "New Spanish Cardinal: 'Homosexuality Can Be Recovered and Normalized With Adequate Treatment'" by Michael W. Chapman, CNSNews.com 1/20/14

In an interview published Sunday, reported the AFP, Archbishop Aguilar  said, “A lot of people complain and don’t tolerate it but with all respect I say that homosexuality is a defective way of manifesting sexuality, because that has a structure and a purpose, which is procreation.”

He continued, “Pointing out a defect to a homosexual is not an offense, it is a help because many cases of homosexuality can be recovered and normalized with adequate treatment. It is not an offense, it is esteem. When someone has a defect, the good friend is the one who tells him.”

When asked about Pope Francis’ remark last year about not judging a gay person who with good will seeks to follow Christ, Archbishop Aguilar said the Pope was not contradicting church teaching. “It is one thing to show welcome and affection to a homosexual person and another to morally justify the exercise of homosexuality,” said the archbishop.

[Aguilar] said: 'All [the Pope] is doing is offering comprehension and compassion and showing a desire to welcome those who have gone astray.'

When reminded of the Pope's speech last year asking for compassion towards homosexuals, he said: 'The pope is very respectful and holds all people in high esteem but he doesn't betray or change the traditional teaching of the church. You can tell a person what their weakness is but that doesn't justify a decision to respect them and help them.'

The 84-year Archbishop emeritus of Pamplona, one of 19 new cardinals named by Pope Francis last week, elevated archbishop to the rank of cardinal in recognition of his life-long service to the church.

NFL QB Russell Wilson & Jesus = Media Controversy

In Seattle Seahawks' Russell Wilson, the mainstream media has found another Christian football quarterback to scrutinize.

-- From "Seahawks QB Russell Wilson and Controversial Pastor Mark Driscoll Talk Jesus" by Matt Driscoll, Seattle Weekly News 1/13/14

On Friday, controversial Mars Hill pastor Mark Driscoll made waves with a tweet declaring, “If you are not a Christian, you are going to hell. It’s not unloving to say that. It’s unloving to not say that.”

While it’s unclear whether Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson believes everything that comes out of Driscoll’s mouth (or Twitter account), Seattle’s star quarterback apparently was willing to sit down with the Mars Hill pastor to talk Jesus . . .

In the video Wilson comes off a bit like Tim Tebow . . .

In the 15-minute video "The Making of a Champion," quarterback Russell Wilson, tackle Russell Okung and others discuss the importance of God in their lives and careers.

Wilson, the Seahawks' heralded quarterback, talks about how his faith helped him overcome doubt and physical shortcomings.

It's unclear if the Seattle Seahawks organization endorses the video, but it was clearly shot at CenturyLink Field and the Seahawks' Renton practice facility.

“I had a dream that my dad passed away and that Jesus came into the room and he was basically knocking on my door, saying, ‘Hey, you need to find out more about me,’” Wilson said. “So that Sunday morning I ended up going to church and that’s when I got saved.”

Unfortunately the dream was a foreshadowing of sorts because Wilson’s father died six years later.

Wilson also explained in the video that he was a “bad kid” and that his Christian faith helped him to mature.

From "Seattle Seahawks' Russell Wilson, Players Agree With Assistant Coach: 'Jesus Is Better Than Super Bowl'" by Alex Murashko, Christian Post Reporter 1/17/14

Jesus Christ is better than anything, including the Super Bowl, said an assistant coach for the Seattle Seahawks during a recent videotaped interview with Mars Hill Church Pastor Mark Driscoll, as four of the team's players, including quarterback sensation Russell Wilson, appeared to nod in agreement.

"Literally, Jesus is the greatest treasure in the universe," said Rocky Seto, who is on the Seahawks coaching staff. "It just makes sense. It's not like you give up your life and then you get something worse. He gave us everything. We had nothing, He gave us everything, so literally it's just one plus one equals two, it's that simple. Jesus is better than anything… even better than the Super Bowl, better than an NFL career, any of that."

"Jesus is love," starting quarterback Russell Wilson explained. "At the end of the day, we are all looking for someone to comfort us, somebody to be there for us at all times. When we are at the worst times of our lives, when we are battling with something, or struggles, whatever it may be, when we are at our highest point as well, when things are going really well, we want somebody to comfort us and be there for us and to say, 'Well done.' That's Jesus. Jesus has always been there. He'll never leave you, never forsake you."

Univ. Wisconsin Bans Bibles per Atheists' Demands

FFRF sells $2 stickers to vandalize Gideon Bibles
The University of Wisconsin-Extension in Madison was quick to agree with demands by the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) to terminate a decades-old practice of allowing Gideon Bibles in over a hundred guest rooms at its Lowell Center conference facility.

The FFRF is also demanding that a memorial Bible be removed from the council chamber of the city of Pinellas Park, Florida.

Meanwhile, the Florida Family Policy Council is helping to distribute Bibles at 19 high schools in Orange County despite a pending lawsuit by atheists.

UPDATE 2/20/14: Iowa University Removes Religious Propaganda = Bibles

-- From "Atheist group persuades UW-Extension to remove Bibles from lodging center on UW-Madison campus" by The Associated Press 1/15/14

The Madison-based atheist group on Wednesday called the decision a victory for the separation of church and state. Staff attorney Patrick Elliott says private hotels can put any type of literature they want in their guest rooms, but state-run colleges have to remain neutral toward religion.

The group complained [in a letter dated November 4th] to Ray Cross, then the UW-Extension chancellor. Cross wrote a letter saying the Bibles would be removed by Dec. 1. He also thanked the group for making him aware of the concern.

A UW-Extension spokeswoman confirmed Wednesday the Bibles have been removed. She released the following statement from Bill Mann, director of Extension conference centers: “We reviewed the concern raised about the placement of Bibles in our guest rooms and decided to remove them. We want to make sure all guests are comfortable in our lodging.”

Jeff Pack, a spokesman for The Gideons International, said he was not aware of the Madison case. The organization “follows whatever direction we are given from the local authorities we work with,” he said. “That’s the integrity we bring to this.”

The November letter was prompted by an overnight guest at the Lowell Center who contacted the foundation . . .

David Hacker, senior legal counsel for Alliance Defending Freedom, a legal ministry that specializes in religious liberty cases, says the issue involving UW-Extension is a "nuanced" one. If the university allows other outside literature to be placed in guest rooms, for example, the school could actually be violating the First Amendment rights of the Gideons by engaging in viewpoint discrimination.

"If they allow other outside materials, such as phone books and magazines, in their rooms, there's no basis to remove these Bibles," said Hacker.

From "Atheist group fighting to remove Bible from Florida city council chamber" posted at FoxNews.com 1/15/14

The Freedom From Religion Foundation – allied with Pinellas Park businessman Randy Heine – sent a letter to the city Monday which is now being reviewed by Pinellas Park’s attorney, Fox 13 reports.

"Not only is the city council sending a message of endorsement for Christianity over other religions and nonreligion," the letter says, "but display of this King James Bible sends a message of endorsement of one particular Christian sect over all others."

"The Bible was given to the city by the Kiwanis Club, I believe, when the building was dedicated," Lewis said. "They feel it's part of City Hall, as being part of the dedication ceremony, and it's become part of the history of the building."

From "Atheist Group Challenges Bible Display at Fla. City Hall, Calls It a Violation of the US Constitution" by Jeff Schapiro, Christian Post Reporter 1/16/14

Randy Heine, the owner of Rockin Cards and Gifts in Pinellas Park, Fla., told The Christian Post he was "stonewalled" by city officials when he tried to have the Bible removed from the dais in the city council chambers back in 2005. He could not afford to take legal action against the city, he says, so his mission was put on hold.

In June 2013 he reached out to the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), an organization that promotes the separation of church and state of which he is also a member, to share his concern.

Jeremy Dys, senior counsel with Liberty Institute, an organization that advocates for religious freedom . . . offered to help the city evaluate the legality of displaying the Bible. He also says FFRF wants to rid the government of all religious references, and that the city needs to evaluate the situation carefully and not merely bend to the organization's request.

From "Christian groups giving out Bibles in Orange schools again today" by Lauren Roth, Orlando Sentinel School Zone 1/16/14

The distribution, which has been allowed by Orange schools twice before, consists of both softcover and hardcover New International Version (NIV) Bibles left on designated tables by volunteers. The tables are placed in accessible locations where students can pick the Bibles up.

Last year an atheist group called the Central Florida Freethought Community objected to a smaller distribution effort, and demanded equal access. After Orange schools refused to allow the group to distribute some of their books and pamphlets, they sued.

The Bible distribution, which coincides with Religious Freedom Day, is being conducted by the Florida Family Policy Council and World Changers of Florida. Bibles are also being given away today in Collier County. World Changers sued that district several years ago to gain open access to its schools, and Orange based their decision to allow Bible distributions in its schools on that case.

School Prayer Clubs Spawned by Duck Dynasty

Sadie Robertson, the 16-year-old star of cable TV's “Duck Dynasty” tells of students inspired to pray in groups at schools nationwide because of the Robertson's Christian family example.

For background, read about prayer sweeping back into schools across America.

-- From "River Region embraces 'Duck Dynasty's' Sadie" by Brad Harper, Montgomery Advertiser 1/13/14

“For a TV show to bring prayer into schools, that’s awesome,” she said.

The teenager was the featured speaker at a fundraiser for faith-based private school Prattville Christian Academy. Her mother, Korie, was with her but didn’t appear at the event.

Sadie declined to answer questions about comments made by her grandfather, family patriarch Phil Robertson, who was suspended from the show by the A&E Network after saying in an interview that homosexual behavior is sinful. The network reinstated him after nine days.

“I’m sure we could all say a lot about that, but the family has decided we’re not going to talk about it really,” Sadie said. “But we will say we’re really glad for us all to be back together as a family because (he’s) the leader. We couldn’t do anything without him.”

From "What Won’t Change About Duck Dynasty, and What Already Has" by James Poniewozik, Time Magazine 1/15/14

The show has now joined the ranks of products that have become totems, like Chick-Fil-A (the fast-food chain that became a symbol of conservative bona fides after its president publicly opposed same-sex marriage) and Hobby Lobby (whose management protested the contraception-coverage requirements in the Affordable Care Act).

Dynasty, with its old-school ethos and its family prayers, always laid a little cultural statement between the lines, but the Robertson’s GQ interview brought it out into the open. For better or worse, we’re a country now that votes through consumption–we express our affiliations and ideology not just with donkeys and elephants but chickens and ducks. In late December, protestors arranged a two-for-one special, eating at Chick-Fil-A in Duck Commander gear to show their support for Phil.

But for an unignorable chunk of the audience now, Duck Dynasty is not just a reality sitcom but a statement: a defense of their besieged values, a defense of the waning belief that condemning gay people in public should be socially acceptable. Maybe in the first four seasons they heard Duck Dynasty affirming their beliefs with a kind of silent dog whistle. Like it or not, Phil turned it into a resounding duck call.

Calif. Teacher Says Jesus Not Allowed in Christmas

The classroom assignment given to first graders at Helen Hunt-Jackson Elementary School in Temecula Valley, California was for students to stand before the class and tell of a Christmas tradition in their family, but when Brynn Williams mentioned Jesus as "the Savior of the world," the teacher interrupted Brynn and told her to stop such talk and take her seat.
“The disapproval and hostility that Christian students have come to experience in our nation’s public schools has become epidemic. I hope that TVUSD will take the lead role in adopting a model policy to prohibit this abuse that has become all too common place for religious-minded students.”

-- From "1st-Grader’s Christmas Presentation Allegedly Cut Short For Citing Bible Verse" by CBS News Los Angeles 1/14/14

In response to the assignment, student Brynn Williams took the “Star of Bethlehem” ornament from the top of her family’s Christmas tree “to represent her family’s tradition of remembering why Christmas is celebrated,” and worked diligently on a one-minute presentation in order to explain to the class that her family’s tradition is to remember the birth of Jesus Christ at Christmas time, attorneys said.

The following day, attorneys say Brynn began her presentation with the following statement: “Our Christmas tradition is to put a star on top of our tree. The star is named the Star of Bethlehem. The 3 kings followed the star to find baby Jesus, the Savior of the world. John…”

According to attorneys, at that point during the presentation, Brynn’s teacher said, “Stop right there! Go take your seat!” and Brynn was not allowed to finish her presentation, which included reciting a Bible verse from the Gospel of John, John 3:16.

On Wednesday, December 18, 2013, Brynn Williams brought home a “share” bag as part of a school assignment. Brynn’s teacher had given every child in her class a canvas bag with verbal instructions to find something at home that represents a family Christmas tradition, put it in the bag, bring it to school, and be prepared to share the family tradition.

. . . Brynn was the only student not allowed to finish her one-minute presentation. After Brynn took her seat, the teacher explained to Brynn in front of all the other students that she was not allowed to talk about the Bible or share its verses.

Advocates for Faith & Freedom sent a demand letter to the Temecula Valley Unified School District demanding that a new policy be adopted to prohibit school officials from expressing disapproval or hostility toward religion or toward religious viewpoints expressed by students. The letter also demands that TVUSD provide a written apology and allow Brynn the opportunity to complete her speech during class.

“She thought she had done something wrong,” [Brynn's mother Gina Williams] told me. “She thought she was in trouble. I told her she was not in trouble and I was proud of her. I tried to comfort her on the way home.”

The following day Williams met with the principal.

“The principal confirmed that Brynn’s teacher did the appropriate thing by stopping her mid-presentation and there are specific education codes that protect the school,” Williams said.

The principal reportedly told her that Brynn could write about her beliefs in a journal but she was not allowed to share her beliefs aloud to any other student.

Gunmen shot and killed at least 30 people, burned down 40 homes and made off with scores of cattle from a mainly Christian village, survivors and a legislator said Tuesday as ongoing ethnic-religious conflict over land and water grips central Nigeria.

Human Rights Watch last month blamed Nigeria’s government, saying it has largely ignored years of “mass murder” in Nigeria’s Middle Belt and failed to prosecute known killers, leaving people to take to revenge killings that further fuel the cycle of violence.

Militants waging an Islamic uprising in northeast Nigeria have “invoked the lack of justice for attacks on Muslims” in these communities to justify killing Christians, the New York-based advocacy group said, amid fears the rebellion could spread.

From "Kerry 'Deeply Concerned' By Nigeria's Ban on Same-Sex Marriage" by Susan Jones, CNSNews.com 1/14/14

According to the State Department's 2013 report on International Religious Freedom, Nigerian terrorists known collectively as Boko Haram "violently murdered hundreds of Christians and Muslims during the year" and "claimed responsibility for many of the 15 church attacks that killed more than 150 people, including scores of Christians, during worship services."

Last May, Secretary of State Kerry issued a news release condemning Boko Haram’s "campaign of terror in the strongest terms," but -- unlike his condemnation of Nigeria's anti-homosexual law -- he has never issued a statement specifically condemning the violence directed at Nigeria's Christians.

As CNSNews.com has reported, Boko Haram (the name roughly translates “Western education is prohibited”) has developed since 2009 from an obscure sect to a group responsible for the deaths of thousands of Christians and others, as it seeks to turn Nigeria -- Africa's biggest oil producer -- into an Islamic State.

From "Deep Concern with Nigeria's Enactment of the Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Act" Press Statement by John Kerry, Secretary of State, Washington, DC, January 13, 2014

The United States is deeply concerned by Nigeria’s enactment of the Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Act.

Beyond even prohibiting same sex marriage, this law dangerously restricts freedom of assembly, association, and expression for all Nigerians.

Moreover, it is inconsistent with Nigeria’s international legal obligations and undermines the democratic reforms and human rights protections enshrined in its 1999 Constitution.

People everywhere deserve to live in freedom and equality. No one should face violence or discrimination for who they are or who they love.

We join with those in Nigeria who appeal for the protection of their fellow citizens’ fundamental freedoms and universal human rights.
