Muslim, Atheist Prayers OKd in N. Carolina County

Media reporting forced the Lincoln County (North Carolina) Board of Commissioners to pass a policy allowing non-Christian invocations after the commission chairman publicly stated that he would not allow "minority religion" prayers.
"I don't believe we need to be bowing to the minorities. The U.S. and the Constitution were founded on Christianity. This is what the majority of people believe in and it's what I'm standing up for. I ain't gonna have no new religion or pray to Allah or nothing like that. . . . We're fighting Muslims every day. I'm not saying they're all bad. They believe in a different god than I do. If that's what they want to do, that's fine. But, they don't need to be telling us, as Christians, what we need to be doing. They don't need to be rubbing our faces in it."

-- From "Commissioners to allow invocation of non-Christian prayer at Lincoln County meetings" by Sarah-Blake Morgan & John Cominsky, WBTV-TV3 (Charlotte, NC) 5/18/15

"The religious leaders or chosen leaders of any assembly that periodically and regularly meets in Lincoln County for the purpose of worshiping or discussing their religious perspectives are invited to offer an invocation before a meeting of the Lincoln County Board of Commissioners," a note from the board stated.

"This opportunity is voluntary, and invocation speakers are free to offer the invocation according to the dictates of their own conscience," the note continues. "The Board requests only that the prayer opportunity not be exploited as an effort to convert others to the particular faith of the invocational speaker, threaten damnation, nor to disparage any faith or belief different than that of the invocational speaker."

From "Board of Commissioners approves prayer policy, Mitchem backtracks" by Adam Lawson, Staff Writer, Lincoln Times-News 5/18/15

Every seat in the chamber was filled and several dozen watched on a video screen in the lobby of the third floor of the James W. Warren Citizens Center as Lincoln County commissioners formally adopted a new prayer policy during their meeting on Monday night.

The policy’s adoption followed a lengthy public comments portion that saw 10 of 14 people who discussed the issue disagree with Mitchem’s statements in some form. Some said they didn’t agree with his viewpoint but approved of his right to make his comments. Others discussed their complete dissatisfaction with his remarks.

“I think it’s the right thing to do,” Commissioner Alex Patton said. “I’m glad that we actually did that and got it behind us. Hopefully that will make Lincoln County stop looking like a national embarrassment. We have never discriminated against anybody. I was the chair for six years and we never denied anybody that came and wanted to give the invocation.”

The [threatening] letter, sent from Americans United for Separation of Church and State, comes in response to Board of Commissioners chairman Carrol Mitchem’s comments in Friday’s Times-News. . . .

In a press release, Americans United executive director Rev. Barry W. Lynn criticized Mitchem’s understanding of the Constitution. . . .

The letter enclosed a model policy that would, according to Americans United, ensure that such discrimination would not occur. The policy asks Lincoln County to open invocations up to all faiths and to any citizen of the county. That citizen “need not be a member of the clergy in order to deliver a solemnizing message.”

Abortion Backtrack by N. Dakota Schools: Lawyer

For months, the Fargo (North Dakota) School District No. 1 had denied allowing pro-life students Brigid O’Keefe and Katie McPherson to form local clubs associated with Students for Life of America, but after the Thomas More Society informed school administrators of their unconstitutional denials, they quietly, and without comment, approved the new clubs at Fargo North and Davies High Schools.

[The Chicago-based Thomas More Society] sent a letter to the district in early April arguing that the refusal of school officials to recognize the groups was a violation of the students' First Amendment rights.

The school district has confirmed to KFGO-AM that it is letting the clubs gather but would not comment further.

The club at Davies High school already hosted its first meeting.

A spokesperson for the Fargo Public School district told Valley News Live they had nothing to say to the public about the decision.

At Fargo North, sophomore Brigid O’Keefe had submitted her application to start a Students for Life in February 2015. School administrators put Brigid and other prospective club members through extensive questioning, including questions about their religious affiliations, before denying the club.

At Davies High School, sophomore Katie McPherson had been trying to start a Students for Life club since September 2014. For months, the school administration would not even let her apply for her club to receive official status or assign a promised room for “unofficial” club meetings.

Both schools have now approved the pro-life clubs. Davies Teens for Life members already held their first meeting, and Brigid is planning the first Spartans for Life meeting for next week.

From "Students for Life America responds to school district over pro-life clubs" posted at Valley News KVLY-TV11 & KXJB (Fargo, ND) 4/17/15

On Thursday Fargo Public schools issued a statement to the original demand letter claiming the students never filed the appropriate paperwork, at least at Davies High, but indicated the district would consider the application if one was handed in. However in emails obtained by Valley News Live, Assistant Principal Lenny Ohlhauser never mentions an application process while writing to other district officials and instead indicates that approval might not be possible because of ties to a church. From the email "Do either of you have students involved with pro-life. I have some students asking about being able to provide a space for meeting. I told them club status will not probably be an option due to the ties of a church, but giving a space to meet is an option."

[Statement from] Kristan Hawkins, president, Students for Life of America
"The school district’s response is amateurish and inaccurate. They are purposely trying to make two high school sophomores look inept when in reality, it is the school district that is fumbling around for any excuse to continue to delay or outright deny the Students for Life clubs that Brigid O’Keefe and Katie McPherson have been trying to start, in one case for eight months now. In all the administration's emails that a Fargo news station released, as well as the verbal communications from the schools to the students, there is no mention of a lack of paperwork as the reason that the Students for Life clubs were being denied. As we approach the end of the school year, we suspect the school district is trying to push this 'issue' under the rug for a few more months in the hopes that Brigid and Katie will forget about wanting to educate their peers and serve women in need. Asking Brigid and Katie to start the entire process over again is a ridiculous response, especially when the clubs should have been approved immediately."
[Statement from] Jocelyn Floyd, Associate Counsel, Thomas More Society
"We're encouraged by the District's acknowledgment that it will abide by the requirements of the law going forward, but we're greatly disappointed by the way it's now chosen to misrepresent the history here in order to place the blame on the students. Never were they denied for paperwork reasons. Throughout the process, the schools and the district had consistently made their position clear—one of illegal censorship based on the message of the club."

24/7 Public Schools Proposed by Obama Admin.

President Obama's education secretary, Arne Duncan, believes not only that public schools should feed children 3 meals a day, but proposes that public boarding schools be the guardians of America's future generation.
“I think all of our schools should be community centers. Our schools should be open 12, 13, 14 hours a day with a wide variety of after-school programming. . . . If we could keep our kids there longer, we think that makes a lot of sense. . . . One idea that I threw out that I wanted to sort of road test with the kids today is the idea of public boarding schools. . . . There’s just certain kids we should have 24/7 to really create a safe environment and give them a chance to be successful.”

In a recent speech at the National Summit on Youth Violence Prevention [in Crystal City, VA], U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan doubled down on such rhetoric by publicly advocating what he called “public boarding schools.”

He insisted that public schools are simply not open long enough to provide all of the resources he contends they should.

Noting that street violence is an issue in many communities, Duncan went on to assert that the more time students spend within the confines of government schools, the better.

The event, organized by the Education Department, the Justice Department, and other federal programs and agencies, featured speakers and panels on preventing youth violence.

Duncan said that schools should be more than a place for learning at the event.

However, according to a “fact sheet” from the federal National Center for Education Statistics, some 1.3 million students ages 12 to 18 faced “victimization” at school in 2012, including 89,000 “serious violent victimizations.” The fact sheet also states that students faced more violence at school than away from school.

“In 2012, a greater number of students ages 12–18 experienced victimizations (theft and violent crime) at school than away from school. That year, 52 victimizations per 1,000 students occurred at school, and 38 victimizations per 1,000 students occurred away from school,” it stated.

Abstinence Education Illegal in Calif, Judge Rules

Fresno County (California) Superior Court Judge Donald Black struck down the Clovis Unified School District sex education program ruling that the curriculum denied students' public right to sexualization and Gay Agenda indoctrination, and did not completely train the children in "safe sex" performance, but rather encouraged abstinence as the most healthy and effective means to prevent pregnancy and disease.

-- From "Judge Rules Clovis Unified's Abstinence-Only Sex Ed Violated State Law" by Diana Aguilera, Valley Public Radio KVPR-FM89.3 (Fresno, CA) 5/13/15

The ruling stems from a lawsuit filed by a group of parents back in 2012. They claimed the district’s high school sex education classes taught abstinence as the only way to prevent pregnancy and ignored the topic of contraception.

Phyllida Burlingame with the ACLU [American Civil Liberties Union] says the ruling is a huge victory, and not just for students in Clovis.

From "Abstinence-only curriculum is not sex education, judge rules" by Bob Egelko, staff writer, San Francisco Chronicle 5/14/15

The state law requires school districts to make their sex-education programs “age-appropriate” and directs them to teach students, starting in the seventh grade, that abstinence from sex is the only sure way to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. But it also requires districts to provide “medically accurate information” on other methods, including all contraceptives approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

The law also requires public schools to teach students, in middle school and again in high school, about the dangers of HIV and AIDS and how they can be prevented.

A group of parents in Clovis filed suit in November 2012, saying the school district was using texts and videos that focused on abstinence and made little or no mention of contraceptives or claimed they were ineffective. One video, described in Black’s ruling, compared a woman who was not a virgin to a dirty shoe. Other videos “perpetuated sexual orientation bias,” the judge said, including one that encouraged students to adopt the mantra, “One man, one woman, one life.”

From "Judge Rules Against Abstinence-Only Sex Ed Program" by Mollie Reilly, The Huffington Post 5/13/15

"Given the high social cost of teen pregnancy and similar toll on society of HIV/ADIS [sic] and other sexually transmitted diseases, the rights vindicated by this suit, access to medically, and socially appropriate sexual education, is an important public right," [Judge] Black wrote.

"We continue to be confident that the District acted appropriately and that our former 9th grade curriculum was unbiased, more than 'abstinence only,' and legally compliant; and that the issues raised in plaintiffs’ litigation were not accurate," Kelly Avants, Clovis Unified's chief communication officer, wrote in an email to The Huffington Post. "We are currently considering whether to pursue an appeal of Judge Black’s ruling."

The parents filed suit in 2012, but dropped the case in 2014 after the school changed its policies. Black, however, ordered the school district to pay for the parents' legal fees, citing the legal action as the catalyst for change in the district.

From "Sex education for students is a public right, judge in California rules" by Hannah Furfaro, The Fresno Bee 5/14/15

Access to medically accurate and age-appropriate sex education is an important public right, Judge Donald Black has ruled, casting questions on the state’s current law, which does not require schools to teach comprehensive sex education in school.

The ruling, which hands a victory to two Clovis Unified parents, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Gay-Straight Alliance Network, also makes it crystal clear that abstinence-only education violates California law.

Black’s decision closes the book on a three-year fight over whether Clovis Unified’s sex education curriculum met the letter of the 2004 Comprehensive Sexual Health and HIV/AIDS Prevention Education law. The ruling answers with a resounding “no” and concludes the district “violated California law for many years before the plaintiff parents began to complain, and that even years after the complaints began the district still had not changed its sex ed curriculum.”

Fewer Americans Claim Christian, Media Cheer: Poll

Don't believe the media headline spin . . .

In an effort to make President Obama's claim true (that America is NOT a Christian nation), the mainstream media have incorrectly hyped results of a new Pew Research survey — a poll which actually shows that MORE Americans claim to be devout Christians while formerly nominal Catholics and mainline churchgoers now more honestly report no religious affiliation.

From "Big Drop in Share of Americans Calling Themselves Christian" by Nate Cohn, New York Times 5/12/15

The Christian share of adults in the United States has declined sharply since 2007, affecting nearly all major Christian traditions and denominations, and crossing age, race and region, according to an extensive survey by the Pew Research Center.

The Christian share of adults fell to 70.6 percent from 78.4 percent between 2007 and 2014, with declines among all major Christian denominations.

The decline has been propelled in part by generational change, as relatively non-Christian millennials reach adulthood and gradually replace the oldest and most Christian adults. But it is also because many former Christians, of all ages, have joined the rapidly growing ranks of the religiously unaffiliated or “nones”: a broad category including atheists, agnostics and those who adhere to “nothing in particular.”

Not all religions or even Christian traditions declined so markedly. The number of evangelical Protestants dipped only slightly as a share of the population, by 1 percentage point, and actually increased in raw numbers [to 62.2 million].

To read the entire article above, CLICK HERE.

From "Study: Americans becoming less Christian, more secular" by Rachel Zoll, Associated Press 5/11/15

The number of Americans who don’t affiliate with a particular religion has grown to 56 million in recent years, making the faith group researchers call “nones” the second-largest in total numbers behind evangelicals, according to a Pew Research Center study released Tuesday.

Researchers have long debated whether people with no religion should be defined as secular since the category includes those who believe in God or consider themselves “spiritual.” But the new Pew study found increasing signs of secularism.

Last year, 31 percent of “nones” said they were atheist or agnostic, compared to 25 percent in 2007, and the percentage who said religion was important to them dropped.

Pew researchers said Christian losses were driven by decreases among mainline, or liberal, Protestants and Roman Catholics.

Mainline Protestants declined by about 5 million to 36 million between 2007 and 2014. Pew found 13 percent of U.S. adults are former Catholics. The study put the number of Catholic adults at 51 million, or just over one-fifth of the U.S. population, a drop of about 3 percent over seven years. In 2007, Catholics made up about one-quarter of Americans.

To read the entire article above, CLICK HERE.

From "American Religion: Complicated, Not Dead" by Emma Green, The Atlantic 5/12/15

. . . the survey actually reveals something more complex than a slow and steady march toward secularization. Those who didn’t identify with any particular religion were asked a follow-up question: “How important is religion in your life?” The answers reveal that this group might be churchless, but it’s not wholly faithless: 44 percent said religion is “very” or “somewhat” important to them, while 56 percent said religion isn't important to them, according to Greg Smith, Pew’s associate director of research. . . .

The survey gives at least a partial look at what the researchers call “religious switching”: People converting to other faiths, joining new kinds of churches, or ditching religion altogether. If you count switches among the major traditions in Protestantism (mainline, evangelical, and historically black congregations), roughly 42 percent of Americans no longer consider themselves part of the religion in which they were raised. . . .

This [survey] may make it sound like Christianity has entered a tailspin, but given its continued prominence in American life, that’s probably overdramatic. America is still a Christian nation, just by a somewhat smaller margin. . . .

The most important caveat to keep in mind in reading this survey is that religion, and particularly Christianity, is not losing its overall influence in American culture. Culture-war rhetoric often implies an epic battle between Christian conservatives and the creep of secularity; in general, that narrative is an oversimplification of American religion. . . .

From "Nominals to Nones: 3 Key Takeaways From Pew’s Religious Landscape Survey" by Ed Stetzer, Christianity Today 5/12/15

The percentage of convictional [devout] Christians remains rather steady, but because the nominal Christians now are unaffiliated the overall percentage of self-identified Christians is decline. . . .

1. Convictional Christianity is rather steady.

Evangelicals now make up a clear majority (55%) of all U.S. Protestants. In 2007, 51% of U.S. Protestants identified with evangelical churches.

One of the primary reasons it appears as though “American Christianity” is experiencing a sharp decline is because the nominals that once made up (disproportionately) Mainline Protestantism and Catholicism are now checking “none” on religious affiliation surveys.

Nominal Christians make up a higher percentage of Mainline Protestants and Catholics than any other denomination of Christian, and this is why their numbers continue to sharply decline.

2. There have been significant shifts within American Christianity.

One of the most notable shifts in American Christianity is the evangelicalization of church in America. Fifty percent of all Christians now self-identify as “evangelical” or “born again,” up from 44 percent in 2007. In 2007, 44% of American Christians, who made up 78% of the U.S. population identified as evangelical. In 2014, 50% of American Christians, who make up 70% of the U.S. population identify as evangelical.

3. Mainline Protestantism continues to hemorrhage.

Only 45% of those raised in the Mainline Protestant tradition remain in Mainline churches. . . . If Mainline Protestantism continues its trajectory it is only a couple of generations from virtual extinction.

To read the entire opinion column above, CLICK HERE.

From "The New Pew Survey on Religion & Lament for Nominal Christianity" by Mark D. Tooley, Christian Post Contributor 5/13/15

Evangelicals are the one Christian group to have grown numerically and almost retained their population percentage, now at 25%. A growing majority of Protestants are now Evangelical, and half of all Christians now identify as Evangelical or born-again. Liberal Mainline Protestantism unsurprisingly continues its fast decline, dropping from 18 to under 15%. Catholics dropped from about 24% to 21%.

The ongoing trend seems to be that nominal, mostly non-practicing Mainline Protestants and Catholics increasingly identify as unaffiliated. Most of this group still professes belief in God, many pray and some attend church. But they no longer claim ties to a specific tradition. Less than a third, about 7%, are atheist or agnostic.

. . . Active Christianity remains robust in America. Orthodox Christian expressions are displacing declining liberal forms. But there is cause for concern and sadness, as Mainline Protestantism, once central to American life, and a unifying spiritual and civil force, recedes ever more dramatically. An America more and more torn between secularists and the spiritually ambiguous on one side, against Evangelicals and believing Catholics on the other, will be even more polarized, missing the common language that Mainline Protestants offered so effectively for centuries.

From "5 key findings about the changing U.S. religious landscape" by Michael Lipka, Pew Research Center 5/12/15

1.  Christians are declining, both as a share of the U.S. population and in total number.  . . .

2.  Within Christianity, the biggest declines have been in the mainline Protestant tradition and among Catholics. . . .

3.  The growth of the “nones” has been powered in part by religious switching. Nearly one-in-five U.S. adults (18%) were raised as Christians or members of some other religion, but now say they have no religious affiliation.

4.  . . . the decline of Christians and rise of the “nones” – have occurred in some form across many demographic groups, including men and women, older and younger Americans, and people with different levels of education and different races and ethnicities.

5.  The share of Americans who identify with non-Christian faiths, such as Islam and Hinduism, has grown modestly in recent years, from 4.7% in 2007 to 5.9% in 2014. Muslims now account for 0.9% of the U.S. adult population (up from 0.4% in the 2007 Landscape Study), while Hindus make up 0.7% of U.S. adults (up from 0.4% in 2007).

From "America’s Changing Religious Landscape" posted at Pew Research Center 5/12/15

To be sure, the United States remains home to more Christians than any other country in the world . . .

Because the U.S. census does not ask Americans about their religion, there are no official government statistics on the religious composition of the U.S. public. . . .

While many U.S. religious groups are aging, the unaffiliated are comparatively young – and getting younger, on average, over time. As a rising cohort of highly unaffiliated Millennials reaches adulthood, the median age of unaffiliated adults has dropped to 36, down from 38 in 2007 and far lower than the general (adult) population’s median age of 46.4 By contrast, the median age of mainline Protestant adults in the new survey is 52 (up from 50 in 2007), and the median age of Catholic adults is 49 (up from 45 seven years earlier).

. . . the size of the historically black Protestant tradition – which includes the National Baptist Convention, the Church of God in Christ, the African Methodist Episcopal Church, the Progressive Baptist Convention and others – has remained relatively stable in recent years, at nearly 16 million adults. And evangelical Protestants, while declining slightly as a percentage of the U.S. public, probably have grown in absolute numbers as the overall U.S. population has continued to expand.

The new survey indicates that churches in the evangelical Protestant tradition – including the Southern Baptist Convention, the Assemblies of God, Churches of Christ, the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, the Presbyterian Church in America, 0ther evangelical denominations and many nondenominational congregations – now have a total of about 62 million adult adherents. That is an increase of roughly 2 million since 2007 . . .

. . . people in older generations are increasingly disavowing association with organized religion. About a third of older Millennials (adults currently in their late 20s and early 30s) now say they have no religion, up nine percentage points among this cohort since 2007, when the same group was between ages 18 and 26. Nearly a quarter of Generation Xers now say they have no particular religion or describe themselves as atheists or agnostics, up four points in seven years. Baby Boomers also have become slightly but noticeably more likely to identify as religious “nones” in recent years.

. . . The evangelical Protestant tradition is the only major Christian group in the survey that has gained more members than it has lost through religious switching. Roughly 10% of U.S. adults now identify with evangelical Protestantism after having been raised in another tradition, which more than offsets the roughly 8% of adults who were raised as evangelicals but have left for another religious tradition or who no longer identify with any organized faith.

. . . Whites continue to be more likely than both blacks and Hispanics to identify as religiously unaffiliated; 24% of whites say they have no religion, compared with 20% of Hispanics and 18% of blacks. But the religiously unaffiliated have grown (and Christians have declined) as a share of the population within all three of these racial and ethnic groups.

. . . The percentage of college graduates who identify with Christianity has declined by nine percentage points since 2007 (from 73% to 64%). The Christian share of the population has declined by a similar amount among those with less than a college education (from 81% to 73%). Religious “nones” now constitute 24% of all college graduates (up from 17%) and 22% of those with less than a college degree (up from 16%).

. . . Since 2007, the share of evangelical Protestants who identify with Baptist denominations has shrunk from 41% to 36%. Meanwhile, the share of evangelicals identifying with nondenominational churches has grown from 13% to 19%.

Via petition, over 600 students, plus faculty, have called on Le Moyne College administration to dis-invite Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the leader of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York, from speaking at this month's commencement ceremony citing the bishop's "homophobia" and his Catholic beliefs.
"In reality I see [the petition] as a great call for celebration. Our students are questioning decisions we've made. They want to understand the rationale at a deeper level. They're indicating concern for members of society that are historically marginalized. . . . It's a sign of engagement."

To put that in perspective, 3,500 students are enrolled at Le Moyne, so more than 20-percent of the student body is calling on the school to change the commencement speaker

The school is aware of students' concerns, but the Le Moyne president says Cardinal Dolan will be speaking at graduation.

"There's absolutely no chance that we would change our speaker moving forward. We're proud to host Cardinal Dolan and we're looking forward to hearing his message," says Dr. Linda LeMura, President of Le Moyne College. "My message to our students and faculty who have expressed concern is to give the Cardinal a chance. Listen to his message of hope and love and I think he will pleasantly surprise our audience."

Students say they will be holding a peaceful protest on graduation day.

The petition also equates opposition to Dolan with other recent protest actions on campus.

“We have walked the halls of Le Moyne for the Black Lives that Matter, we have held vigils for the Muslim students gunned down in Chapel Hill and much more,” [the petition] says. “We have always come together in hard times. Do not stop now. Stand strong, sign and keep it going.”

The petition doesn’t include any specific examples of wrongdoing by Dolan, though it does include a link to a 2013 article about sex abuse victims in the Milwaukee archdiocese calling for more open records. Dolan was Milwaukee’s archbishop from 2002 to 2009, but his involvement in the sex abuse scandal was limited to handling the uproar and aftermath rather than any alleged complicity in actual abuse.

As for the allegations of homophobia, Dolan’s position that homosexual acts are sinful and gay marriage unacceptable are in line with official Catholic doctrine.

"Overall, I do not think Cardinal Dolan represents the tenets we value at Le Moyne College," said Katherine M. Bakhuizen, a senior and president of CARE, a group promoting the acceptance of gay and lesbian students on campus. "With sexual assault becoming endemic on college campuses and marriage equality with LGBTQ+ acceptance on the forefront of history, we cannot welcome someone who does not align with our values as a Jesuit institution."

[Joe Della Posta, a college spokesman,] said the college recognizes that not everyone will be happy with the selection of Dolan.

"In selecting a commencement speaker, we consider a number of criteria, including prominence in their field, the ability to deliver a relevant message to our graduates, and the individual's understanding of our role as a Catholic, Jesuit institution," Della Posta said. "Cardinal Dolan is arguably the most influential leader within the U.S. Catholic Church, and we're confident his message will be compelling and impact a wide range of people in the audience."

"Jesus taught love and acceptance, and so does Le Moyne," [senior student Kailey] McDonald said."The Jesuits do not condemn people for the way they love. I have not seen evidence that Cardinal Dolan reflects these teachings, and I hope Le Moyne recognizes that."

David McCallum, director of mission and identity for the college, said he was not disturbed by the student protest.

“I think it’s something you hope for in a college setting. You know, that young people are thinking critically about issues and that they’re willing to take stands on things that they believe in and even more so in a Catholic Jesuit setting, where we promote the importance of social justice,” McCallum said.

First Abortion Restrictions in 15 Years in Tenn.

Following a new constitutional amendment passed by voters in November giving the state power to regulate abortion, Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam signed HB 1368 / SB 1280 into law to require clinics performing more than 50 abortions annually to be licensed and regulated as "ambulatory surgical treatment centers."

The House approved the measure on an 81-17 vote, while the Senate passed its version 28-4.

Haslam has yet to sign a separate bill to require a 48-hour waiting period before an abortion but has indicated that he plans to.

The legislation came after voters in November approved a constitutional amendment giving state lawmakers more power to regulate abortions. The ballot measure overturned a 2000 Supreme Court ruling that had thrown out laws imposing similar restrictions.

From "New Tennessee law requires stricter abortion clinic standards" by Andy Sher, Chattanooga Times Free Press 5/8/15

The law now requires all abortion providers, including physicians, that perform 50 or more abortions a year to be regulated as ambulatory surgical treatment centers. That subjects them to new building requirements, which critics say will lead to closure of some clinics that can't afford multimillion dollar tabs to come into compliance.

Proponents say it is needed for women's safety.

The bill was one of three measures abortion opponents pushed in the state Legislature this year. A second measure imposes a 48-hour waiting period on women seeking an abortion. The third requires a physician to describe in person to a woman the procedure and impacts to the fetus and potential impacts to the woman's health.

Haslam has said he would sign all three.

Tennessee lawmakers have in recent years also enacted a handful of abortion restrictions, including a requirement that physicians performing abortions have admitting privileges at local hospitals, which forced the closure in 2012 of a clinic in Knoxville that could not find a physician willing to provide abortions who also had admitting privileges.

But until voters approved Amendment 1 in November removing the right to an abortion from the state constitution, Tennessee lawmakers were limited in their ability to pass legislation by a 2000 state Supreme Court decision that concluded the state constitution provided stronger protections for abortion than the U.S. Constitution.

Tennessee is now one of 23 states that require centers performing abortions to meet the guidelines of ASTCs, which include requirements for the physical building and staffing that have forced closure of clinics in other states unable to comply.

Gov. Bill Haslam signed into law Friday an abortion bill sponsored by Rep. Susan Lynn, R- Mt. Juliet, which will stiffen the state’s abortion regulations.

Joey Hensley, R-Hohenwald, sponsored the bill in the Senate and said it would bring the state’s abortion regulations more in line with surrounding states.

Lynn said there are currently eight facilities advertising abortion procedures in the state, and half are not licensed or inspected by the state health department –including two in Nashville.

The law will take effect July 1.

From "Tennessee Governor Signs Pro-Life Bill Requiring Inspection of Abortion Facilities" by Steven Ertelt, LifeNews.com 5/8/15

Weaker abortion laws in Tennessee have contributed to large numbers of out-of-state women seeking to terminate pregnancies which, according to the Centers for Disease Control, has resulted in Tennessee becoming an abortion destination in which of 1 of 4 abortions was sought by a woman or girl from another state.

Abortion business across the country are known for failing to follow basic health and safety laws that provide for the protection of patients that legitimate medical centers routinely follow on a daily basis. In other states with similar pro-life laws, abortion clinics have shut down that are unable to follow these basic rules and requirements. That results in saving unborn children from abortions and protecting women’s lives and health.

“Our goal must be to have safeguards in place that are at least as strong as those of neighboring states,” said [Rep.] Lynn.  “I’m grateful for the support of my colleagues and Tennessee’s pro-life movement as we work to promote the protection of life and health in our state.”

FBI Director Says Satan Leads Islamic Terrorists

Breaking from the White House desperate avoidance of linking evil and/or Islam to worldwide jihadist terrorism, this week, FBI Director James Comey, while detailing the infiltration of Islamists into America, described the true nature of the battle.
“But what we see [the enemy] doing is trying in a way to test people’s bona fides by urging them to kill.  Sometimes supplying with them hit lists, sometimes suggesting particular targets, but other times just ‘kill in our name.’ If you can’t travel, kill where you are. It’s almost if there is a devil sitting on the shoulder saying, ‘Kill,’ ‘Kill,’ ‘Kill,’ ‘Kill,’ all day long.”
-- James B. Comey, FBI Director

“The whole threat goes beyond the kinds of things people were worried about with just al-Qaida.  We are in a different stage than we have been since 9/11.”

FBI Director James B. Comey said Thursday his agents learned hours before the start of a cartoon contest and exhibit depicting the prophet Muhammad that one of the gunmen had expressed interest in going to the controversial event in Texas, but there was no indication he was planning an attack.

[Elton] Simpson and his roommate, Nadir Soofi, 34, who lived in Phoenix, were killed by a local traffic officer as they opened fire at a conference center in Garland, Tex., where the competition was taking place.

Comey said the Islamic State’s effort to recruit and motivate people in the United States to try to do harm was paying dividends.

“There’s a lot of different threats that are out there, from ISIS to homegrown violent extremists,” [U.S. Northern Command] spokesman John Cornelio said. “By providing this increase in security measures, we increase the safety and security of our service members.”

Comey said the Islamic State presented a particular danger because it is proficient at using social media to deliver propaganda. The group has thousands of English-speaking followers online, he said, including many in the United States.

Comey said the group’s reach through social media is like a siren song for would-be supporters.

Soon after the Texas attack, a post appeared on an anonymous text-sharing site claiming that the Islamic State has 71 people in 15 states ready to carry out missions. Maryland was one of five states named.

From "ISIS threat prompts U.S. military bases to raise security level" by The Associated Press posted at CBS News 5/8/15

Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, said federal authorities are aware of "thousands" of potential extremists living in the U.S., only a small portion of whom are under active surveillance.

The Texas shooting is part of what authorities have long considered an alarming trend involving would-be recruits for whom technology makes it easier to be exposed to ISIS propaganda. Beyond the communications that occur in the open, ISIS increasingly makes contact with followers and steers them into forums that allow for encrypted communications that can be harder for law enforcement officials to access.

The terror group has been encouraging its followers to travel to Syria to join the self-created caliphate there, but if they can't do that, to "kill where you are," FBI Director James Comey said.

"The siren song sits in the pockets, on the mobile phones, of the people who are followers on Twitter," Comey said. "It's almost as if there's a devil sitting on the shoulder, saying 'Kill! Kill! Kill! Kill!' all day long."

From "Is the devil real?" by Rusell Shaw, freelance writer, Arlington Catholic Herald 4/7/15

[Recent] news was all about the murder by fanatics of 150 children and teachers in a Pakistan school. As this is being written, the world is stunned by the action of a German pilot who deliberately flew his airliner into an Alpine mountainside, killing 149 others along with himself.

Human agency obviously was operative in these events, as in other recent horrors, but it’s easy to glimpse a devilish hand in them, too — and also in the multitude of less ostentatious but hardly less destructive acts of cruelty, dishonesty and lust that darken everyday life.

The standard response to this kind of thinking is to laugh it off. The devil has become a joke. . . . Getting people not to believe in him is one of the devil’s favorite tricks. . . .

But there’s too much evidence of his existence for disbelief to be a viable option. . . .

There are two extremes to be avoided in this matter: fearful obsession with the devil and ignoring the fact that we live on a battlefield with Satan and his forces drawn up against us. The letter to the Ephesians puts it best: “We are not contending against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness” (Eph 6:12).

From "Belief in Satan a psychiatric disorder?" by Rev. Austin Miles, posted at RenewAmerica.com 3/18/15

This is exactly the intentions of Satan[:] to discourage anyone from acknowledging him as the personification of evil. And that tactic has been so successful that you SELDOM hear any mention of this from behind church pulpits. Why? Most pastors today will avoid the subject and even eliminate this important teaching in the Bible, not wanting to appear fanatic. They want to show that their churches are relevant for today and are up with the times. That is called, progressivism.

As a result, Satan has been unleashed with little or no restraints as havoc is caused throughout the world including the brutal rapes of little girls and little boys and senseless murders. Notice the increase of evil for the sake of evil. Not to settle a score or to punish for a bad debt, but simply to kill someone just for the sake of doing it. Or the new thing, to travel in twos and suddenly hit someone walking down the sidewalk, young or old, in a fad called, "The Knockout Game."

While Satan cannot directly kill someone, he can manipulate one's mind to kill himself through demonic depression and manipulating the minds of others to suddenly lash out at their own families. He can attack one through health, not actually causing the health problems, but attacking those areas which are the weakest parts of your body or attacking the weakest part of your minds such as temptations that you foolishly have let in. The purpose is to confuse one to wonder where God is or, is there really a God? That is a steak dinner for the enemy.

The deceptive enemy is very much alive and active in destruction. Don't let anyone convince you otherwise. But we all have power from on High to stop him in his tracks. Never give in, never give up, but press on! And move in closer to God.

Obama Forces Gay Agenda on Schools via Taxpayer$$

With virtually zero notice to parents, the Fairfax County (Virginia) School Board suddenly voted Thursday night to fully embrace the transgender/cross-dressing tenets of the Gay Agenda regarding both employees and students, meaning that all formerly private restrooms and locker rooms will be fair game for "any and all genders."

-- From "Fairfax school board approves transgender protections" T. Rees Shapiro, education reporter, Washington Post 5/7/15

The School Board voted 10 to 1 with one abstention to add “gender identity” to its non-discrimination policy, two months after Virginia Attorney General Mark R. Herring (D) issued an opinion granting local school boards the authority to expand protections to transgender people.

The School Board voted in November to include sexual orientation in its non-discrimination policy after the Supreme Court let stand rulings that allow gay marriages in Virginia and other states. (emphasis added)

The auditorium at Luther Jackson Middle School was filled to capacity, with about 500 people in attendance. At times, the meeting was interrupted by vocal opposition from hundreds in the audience who chanted and booed.

Kaufax at one point hammered her gavel and threatened to clear the auditorium if audience members continued to interject. At least five Fairfax County police and school security officers were standing in the room during the meeting. Some in attendance stood to turn their backs on board members as they spoke in favor of the policy change.

"No student, employee, or applicant for employment in the Fairfax County Public Schools shall, on the basis of age, race, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, national origin, marital status, or disability, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity, as required by law. It is the express intent of the School Board that every policy, practice, and procedure shall conform to all applicable requirements of federal and state law."

The school board held its vote during a heated and contentious public hearing Thursday night at Luther Jackson Middle School in Falls Church. People were fired up on both sides with screaming and shouting during the meeting. It got so bad that the board threatened to kick everyone out while police and security even showed up.

The supporters pushing for this change said they are doing this not because of an outcry for it from their community, but because of a mandate by the U.S. Department of Education in Washington.

Fairfax County School Board Chair Tamara Derenak Kaufax said in a statement after the vote:
"On March 4, 2015, Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring said local school boards have the authority under state law to include gender identity in their non-discrimination policies. The U.S. Department of Education has told school districts that transgender students are protected from discrimination under Title IX and has recently required some school districts including Alexandria, Virginia, to amend their policies to expressly include gender identity."

From "Feds Force ‘Gender Equality’ On Virginia School District" by Josh Fatzick, Reporter, Daily Caller 5/8/15

Many parents [at the Board meeting] were concerned the new rules will allow boys and girls who identify as the opposite sex to use the bathrooms and locker rooms of their choice, and that the school board is rushing the decision without asking for their input.

Efforts to add the language to the school’s nondiscrimination policy began in March as a way to help transgender students and staff in the schools feel more welcome, but some are calling it simply government overreach.

According to Andrea Lafferty of the Traditional Values Coalition, a religious advocacy group based in Washington, D.C., the board has been trying for weeks to pass the policy change, but only informed parents it would be voting on the change two days before the meeting.

“The School Board is showing a glaring disregard for the interests of the majority of parents with children in the county’s public schools,” she said in a statement.”No public hearing was ever held, just two brief 30 minute testimony periods and then ‘Bingo!’, the School Board will vote.”

From "Some Fairfax Co. Parents Protesting Vote on Transgender Students" by David Culver, Northern Virginia Bureau, WRC-TV4 (Washington, D.C.) 5/8/15

The vote was last night, but some Fairfax County parents say their campaign is not over.

The vote came after testimony from an equal number of parents on each side of the issue -- but in a room that was packed with parents who opposed it.

"Right there in front of us were our representatives that were voted by our people," [parent Arlinda] Hanna said. "And they completely shut the doors on us."

One board member voted against the measure, wanting to delay it instead: Elizabeth Schultz.

"The question is, what message do we send parents?" Schultz said. "That we want your taxpayer dollars, we want you to participate in the PTA, we want you to participate in fundraisers, we want you to volunteer in the schools -- but then we want you to go away?"

She said she has gotten many emails from parents thanking her for her stand.

From "School district says feds forced policy that allows transgender kids to use bathrooms of their choice" by Todd Starnes, FOX News 5/7/15

A plan to add “gender identity” to a Virginia school’s nondiscrimination policy has enraged parents and preachers . . . of the nation’s tenth largest school district . . .

Martin Baker, the pastor of Burke Community Church, warned that “the damage and destruction to our children, teens and impacted adults will be incalculable.”

“Everything from locker rooms to bathrooms will be potentially open for people who simply feel that their inner sexuality does not match their outer, physical sexuality,” he wrote in an email to the 3,000-member congregation.

“This is not just shocking, it is morally and spiritually abhorrent, and that is why I am convinced this is one cultural issue where we, as a church, must speak up and out with clarity, compassion and conviction,” he added.

“This is a beating into submission of the American people and the taxpayers by the Obama Administration and those willfully going along with it,” said [Andrea] Lafferty. “They are going to say if you don’t comply, we’re going to take away your lunch money – your federal funding.”

In Fairfax County, that amounts to a lot of lunch money. The Washington Post reports the district receives $42 million from the federal government – about 1.7 percent of its budget.
