The Vatican has apparently decided to confront the liberal media spin of Pope Francis by issuing statements correcting reports implying that Roman Catholic doctrine is evolving.  Perhaps the Pope's comments today concerning abortion is the vanguard of clarifying statements to come.

Francis, in a conversation with leaders of religious orders published by a Jesuit journal on Friday, said the Catholic Church had to try not to scare away children who live in complex family situations, such as those whose parents were separated and those living with gay couples.

"The situation in which we live now provides us with new challenges which sometimes are difficult for us to understand," the pope said, according to the transcript of the conversation.

"How can we proclaim Christ to these boys and girls? How can we proclaim Christ to a generation that is changing? We must be careful not to administer a vaccine against faith to them," he said.

The Vatican has stressed the pope's words did not change Church teachings that homosexual tendencies are not sinful but homosexual acts are.

Federico Lombardi has issued an explanatory note following extensive debate in the Italian media after the publication by the Jesuit journal Civiltà Cattolica of a conversation between Pope Francis and religious superiors on November 29th. Many comments focused on gay unions.

The Pope had “absolutely not expressed” his opinions on a debate that was ignited in Italy one month later, Fr. Lombardi says, and “those who remember the positions he expressed earlier in Argentina during similar debates know that they were completely different from what some people are now trying surreptitiously to attribute to him.”

The Vatican felt compelled on Tuesday to deny that Pope Francis had "abolished sin", after . . . Eugenio Scalfari, an atheist who writes opinion pieces for the left-leaning La Repubblica newspaper, published an article titled "Francis' Revolution: He has abolished sin".

Scalfari, who held a long private conversation with the pope earlier this year and wrote about it several times, concluded in the complex, treatise-like article that Francis believed sin effectively no longer existed because God's mercy and forgiveness were "eternal".

Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi told Vatican Radio that "this affirmation that the pope has abolished sin" was wrong.

Cross Restored to LA County Seal Despite Atheists

Ten years after the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) stripped the Christian cross from the official symbol of Los Angeles County, Board supervisors voted to, once again, recognize that the origin of the county and the "city of angels" is rooted in the Christian Mission of San Gabriel.

"Our mountain ranges, our valleys, our hills, all of these things are named after Catholic saints.  I'm not a Catholic myself. My wife is Jewish. But I want to see this historically accurate."

The proposal to change the seal, which appears on flags, vehicles and written communications with residents, was advanced by board members Michael D. Antonovich and Don Knabe and picked up a required third vote from Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas.

The cross will be added to a small depiction of the San Gabriel Mission now in the seal. Supporters of the change called it a matter of historical and architectural accuracy; critics called it a thinly veiled effort to get a Christian symbol back in the county logo.

From 1957 to 2004, the county seal featured a cross floating above a rendering of the Hollywood Bowl. The board voted 3 to 2 to remove the cross from the seal in 2004 rather than face a lawsuit being threatened by the American Civil Liberties Union. But then the county had to defend itself in a lawsuit filed by a county employee who opposed removing the cross. After three years, the county prevailed when the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear the case.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted 3-2 Tuesday to place a litte cross atop the depiction of the San Gabriel Mission on the county seal.

Until 2004, the county seal depicted the Roman goddess Pomona (representing agriculture), the Spanish galleon San Salvador, a tuna, a cow, the Hollywood Bowl, an oil well, two stars representing the County’s motion picture and television industries and a cross.

The post-2004 seal replaced Pomona with a Native American woman and added a depiction of the San Gabriel Mission, but without a cross on the roof.

To accurately reflect the role of the San Gabriel Mission in the historical and cultural development of Los Angeles County, today’s action corrects the current rendering of the mission on the county seal which is artistically and architecturally inaccurate. The history of Los Angeles County began with the founding of the San Gabriel Mission by Father Junipero Serra in September, 1771.  Also known as the ‘Pride of the California Missions,’ its doors opened directly to the El Camino Real which connected all of California’s great missions, pueblos and presidios.

At the time that the seal was redesigned in 2004, the cross had been missing from the top of the Mission since 1989, when it was taken down to retrofit the structure after damage from the Whittier Narrows earthquake.   The cross was subsequently returned to the top of the mission in 2009.

Preacher Arrested for Talking of Sexual Sin

American evangelist Tony Miano was arrested in Dundee, Scotland when a passing woman reported to police that she was offended when she heard Miano say that Jesus Christ saves us from all kinds of sexual sins.

“The female officer saw we had a camera and lunged for it and then the male policeman grabbed it and threw it in the police van, After Tony was put in the police van I asked why he was being arrested and was told it was for a breach of the peace and for using homophobic language.”

Miano denies that, on Wednesday, at Murraygate, he behaved in a threatening or abusive manner likely to cause fear and alarm and repeatedly shouted and uttered homophobic remarks.

The charges were brought under section two of the Offences (Aggravation by Prejudice) (Scotland) Act 2009 in that the offence was aggravated by prejudices relating to sexual orientation.

This time, according to reports Miano talked about the nature of sin; about the different sins that Jesus had come to save people from when a woman began to shout at him.  He was preaching about sin in general and when he mentioned sexual sin including adultery, promiscuity and homosexual practice, the woman shouted that her son was gay.

Unlike last year when Miano was released with a police caution, this time he was held overnight and pleaded ‘not guilty’ to a charge of ‘breach of the peace with homophobic aggravation’ before being bailed for release. He is allowed to return to the United States and but the judge ordered he must attend court again for trial on April 22nd.

Julian Mann, an Anglican Vicar who writes for The Guardian and at Cranmer’s well known blog, suggests that even if Miano had preached as he did inside a Scottish church, the authorities point of view may well have supported arresting him anyway had a parishioner made a similar complaint.

Indeed Mann goes on to speculate in ‘Cranmer’s Curate’ that “Given that most local churches are not very far from a public pavement, what reason have we to expect that servants of the Lord Jesus Christ will not be arrested for teaching the Bible in Scotland beyond too long?”

She adds that the Christian Legal Centre is ready to serve anyone who is challenged for expressing their Christian beliefs.

Gonorrhea and syphilis are on the rise in the U.S., mostly in men who have sex with men, a trend the government said is linked to inadequate testing among people stymied by homophobia and limited access to health care.

The rate of new gonorrhea cases rose 4 percent in 2012 from the year before, while syphilis jumped 11 percent, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said today in a report [Sexually Transmitted Disease Surveillance 2012]. Rates for chlamydia, the most common of the bacterial sexually transmitted diseases [spread predominantly by vaginal intercourse], gained less than 1 percent.

The CDC rate for gonorrhea was 107.5 cases out of 100,000 in 2012, while syphilis was 5 cases per 100,000 people. Sexually transmitted diseases, including these infections, cost the U.S. health-care system about $16 billion every year, according to the report.

A key finding in the report, according to co-author Eloisa Llata, MD, of the CDC's STD prevention division in Atlanta, is that men who have sex with men appear to be driving the increases.

The report reiterated the agency's concern about growing antibiotic resistance, which has limited the treatment options for gonorrhea. Currently, dual therapy with ceftriaxone and either azithromycin or doxycycline is the only CDC-recommended treatment.

The report focuses on chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis because they are routinely reported to the CDC, while others -- such as human papillomavirus, herpes simplex virus, and trichomoniasis -- are not.

And though the recession technically ended in June 2009, and economists are hoping for a stronger economy in 2014, population growth shows little sign of gaining strength. About half of the states showed somewhat slower growth rates this year than last year, Frey said.

U.S. population growth is expected to slow even more in the next few decades, though that’s largely not attributable to a weak economy, Frey said. Instead, the slow growth will mostly be the result of an aging population.

Since 1960, the fertility rate in the United States has declined 46.6 percent. In that year, 118 babies were born per 1,000 women aged 15 to 44.

. . . 2012 thus marked the fifth straight year that 40 percent or more of the babies born in the United States were born to unmarried women.

The percentage of American babies born to unmarried mothers has more than doubled since 1980. That year, only 18.4 percent of the babies born in the United States were born to unmarried mothers.

Birth rates declined among women in their early 20s between 2011 and 2012 to a new record low. The rate was also down for women 25-29 years, but increased for women aged 30 to 44 years. Birth rates for the youngest (under 15 years) and the oldest mothers (45 years and higher) were unchanged.

Low fertility means less growth in a country’s population, barring a pickup in immigration. Fewer people can mean fewer workers to propel the economy and a smaller tax base to draw from to pay the benefits due retired Americans.

“The fact that fertility has continued to drop, post-recession, suggests that this decline is linked to longer-term, non-economic factors,” said Mark Mather of the Population Reference Bureau, a nonprofit demographic research group.  “A growing number of young adults are going to college and postponing marriage and family formation.”

Demographers say the cohabiting trend among new parents is likely to continue. Social stigma regarding out-of-wedlock births is loosening, and economic factors play a role.

About 18.1 percent of all single women who became pregnant opted to move in with their boyfriends before the child was born, according to 2006-2010 data from the government's National Survey of Family Growth, the latest available. That is compared to 5.3 percent who chose a post-conception marriage, according to calculations by Daniel Lichter, a Cornell sociologist.

As recently as the early 1990s, 25 percent of such couples got married.

Since the early 1990s, the share of out-of-wedlock, cohabiting births has grown from 11 percent to 24 percent, while those to noncohabiting, single mothers has remained steady at 16 percent.

Calif. Teacher Trashes Jesus: 6-year-old's Lawyer

While Isaiah Martinez was giving Christmas candy canes to classmates, his first grade teacher, Valerie Lu, under orders by her supervisor, Gordon Pfitzer of Merced Elementary School, grabbed the gifts and ripped off the tags that Isaiah and his sister made telling a story of Jesus Christ.  The West Covina Unified School District responded that the teacher was simply maintaining "religious neutrality," by saying "Jesus is not allowed in school."

Isaiah Martinez, a six-year-old student at Merced Elementary School in West Covina, Calif., arrived to school on Dec. 13, planning to pass out candy canes with religious messages to his fellow students in celebration of the upcoming Christmas season. After the boy's teacher consulted with the school principal, he reportedly told the student that he could not pass out the religious messages because "Jesus is not allowed in school." The boy was still allowed to pass out the candy canes, but the teacher reportedly threw the religious-themed messages in the trash.

"The pendulum has swung so far in the opposite direction that public schools are becoming a place of hostility toward Christian and other religiously-based worldviews," Tyler said in a news release discussing Martinez's case. "It's time to push the pendulum back in the right direction where kids can experience true tolerance without religiously motivated hostility from their teachers and school officials."

Tyler added in the statement that his nonprofit group has received a surge of phone calls from parents across the country who say their students are victims of religious bullying, not by fellow students but rather by teachers and school officials.

The Satanic Temple is soliciting donations on its website so it can erect and donate a public monument to Oklahoma's Capitol Preservation Commission to "complement and contrast the Ten Commandments monument that already resides" on the grounds.

A message on the organization's website referred to a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union that noted "the [Ten Commandments] monument stands alone, with no other monuments or memorials in the immediate vicinity." The monument was donated to the Capitol Preservation Commission in 2009 by state Rep. Mike Ritze, an ordained Southern Baptist minister.

"We are keenly attuned to the need for a public-friendly design and plan is to make our monument an object of play for young children," the Satanic Temple said on its website.

The Satanic Temple maintains that the Oklahoma Legislature's decision to authorize a privately funded Ten Commandments monument at the Capitol opened the door for its statue. The Ten Commandments monument was placed on the north steps of the building in 2012, and the Oklahoma chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union has sued to have it removed.

Similar requests for monuments have been made by a Hindu leader in Nevada, an animal rights group and the satirical Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

"The monument has been designed to reflect the views of Satanists in Oklahoma City and beyond," temple spokesman Lucien Greaves said in a statement. "The statue will also have a functional purpose as a chair where people of all ages may sit on the lap of Satan for inspiration and contemplation."

The five-member board voted unanimously this week in favor of a new policy to invite leaders from a variety of Mesa religious organizations, including churches, synagogues and mosques, to pray before the start of meetings.

The prayer will be part of a new pre-meeting program, which will include the Pledge of Allegiance and entertainment by student musicians, planned to start on Feb. 11.

[Board member Michelle Udall said,] “Prayer helps set the tone for the deliberations that are to follow. Our Founding Fathers clearly did not intend for prayer to be banished from public meetings. Those who do not wish to participate are always allowed to refrain.”

Bullies Exposed in Ivory Towers: Study Shows

"Social Bullying in Nursing Academia," a new study co-authored by Professor Janice Beitz at the Rutgers School of Nursing-Camden, found that non-tenured females who teach undergraduates are subject to bullying by academic superiors, as well as peers.

Beitz, who co-authored the research, says the women, who were mainly non-tenured in U.S. baccalaureate programs, talked about being slandered, lied to and given unrealistic workloads, and even made claims of being physically threatened.

For the most part, the alleged bullies were academic administrators, but there were also instances of faculty members bullying peers or even superiors.

According to Beitz, the bullying may stem from feeling threatened by a fellow academic's qualifications and scholarships. Perceived weakness was another reason for bullying to occur.

When individuals become educators in academia, they are more interested in teaching than being picked on. However, this unfortunate turn of events is exactly what happens in some colleges and universities, according to new research from a nursing scholar at Rutgers University-Camden.

In a study, professor Janice Beitz conducted interviews with 16 nursing professors at the school who also happened to be the victims of social bullying, according to a news release from the university. Part of Beitz's reasoning for conducting the study was due to the fact that she herself has been the victim of bullying in her career. The study and its findings are meant to raise awareness of a problem, the scale of which is still unknown.

"What worries me is the impact that bullying is having on the ability to recruit and retain quality educators," says Beitz. "It has become a disturbing trend. "The bully can make life miserable for the target," she explains. "That's because in an administrative role, a bully has the power to make decisions about the target. Part of it is the unique nature of higher education. The tenure process is different than any other environment. Administrators in academia have power over colleagues, and sometimes that power causes them to bully their subordinates."

Beitz is now working on a follow-up study on resilience and how victims are surviving when bullied. Additionally, since her bullying study does address the prevalence of bullying in nursing academia, Beitz hopes to cast a wider net and perform a quantitative study on the issue nationwide.

While the bill was initially introduced in February by Democratic Reps. Wendell Gilliard, Robert Williams, Joseph Jefferson, Carl Anderson, Bill Clyburn, Lonnie Hosey, Robert Ridgeway III and Republican Reps. Liston Barfield, Heather Ammons Crawford and Don Wells, the measure has since stalled in the state House's judiciary committee.

According to Gilliard, the lawmakers hope to work around [limits imposed by court rulings] by compromising on whether the teachers lead the prayer, telling WCIV [TV] that students may "pray to whomever they want to."

Representative Gilliard told local television station WVCIV-TV that he felt the language of the bill was workable to somehow introduce prayer back into public schools.

Official school prayer was first banned in America in 1962 in the Supreme Court decision of Engle v. Vitale, which involved a case out of Hyde Park, New York. Prior to the ruling, students were led in a scripted prayer every morning, which read, “Almighty God, we acknowledge our dependence upon Thee, and we beg Thy blessings upon us, our parents, our teachers and our country. Amen.”

“There’s more attention being drawn to it than we ever thought,” said Hayden, who estimates that 99 percent of the reaction he’s received has been supportive of his Dec. 16 proclamation intended to spark community discussion.

Alix Jules, coordinator of the DFW Coalition of Reason, said the proclamation runs counter to today’s diverse society. “It ignores our Jewish, Hindu, Muslim and secular families who are also working on living and instilling moral values in our daily lives — without the Bible,” he said.

Hayden and his supporters say the proclamation was not intended to exclude anyone, and people of all faiths are invited to participate in the daily readings.

Calif. Judge OKs Prayer at Eureka City Council

Humboldt County, California Superior Court Judge Bruce Watson dismissed a lawsuit by atheists and local resident Carole Beaton who want Eureka Mayor Frank Jager muzzled regarding the city’s annual prayer breakfast.  The judge ruled that prayer at city council meetings does not violate California's constitution.

“Since 1849 the state Constitution has begun with a religious invocation: ‘We, the People of the State of California, grateful to Almighty God for our freedom, in order to secure and perpetuate its blessings, do establish this Constitution.’ This language, as well as the history of how it came to be included, eloquently refutes the argument that the framers of the state Constitution intended to prohibit ceremonial prayer.”

In a narrow ruling signed on Christmas Eve, Judge Bruce Watson found that the non-secular prayers offered by volunteers at the opening of council meetings do not violate the California Constitution as alleged in a lawsuit filed by city resident Carole Beaton in January [2013]. Watson's ruling stops short of deciding whether specific invocations may have been inappropriately sectarian or addressing Beaton's claim that Mayor Frank Jager should not be using his city title or city resources to promote his annual prayer breakfast.

In his ruling, Watson relies heavily on the 1983 U.S. Supreme Court case of Marsh v. Chambers, which determined that the Nebraska Legislature didn't violate the U.S. Constitution's provisions for the separation of church and state by opening sessions with prayers offered by a chaplain because the practice is historic.

In his ruling, Watson does not address the issue of Jager's prayer breakfast or whether two specific invocations -- a Hindu prayer and a man's singing “God Bless America” -- exploited the invocation practice in order to “proselytize, advance or disparage one or another religious beliefs or faiths.”

The pending lawsuit, filed by Eureka attorney Peter Martin on behalf of Eureka resident Carole Beaton, requests that the city stop holding invocations -- sectarian or otherwise -- before City Council meetings, and that Jager stop using his position and city resources to promote the breakfast.

. . . [Eureka City Attorney Cyndy] Day-Wilson went on to argue that the breakfast is not government sponsored, but privately funded and organized. [Mayor] Jager's involvement in the event, she argues, has been in the capacity of a citizen.

. . . In a previous interview with the Times-Standard, [atheists' lawyer] Martin said the federal government may allow U.S. President Barack Obama to hold a prayer breakfast or provide for invocations prior to meetings, but he believes California's Constitution is stricter when it comes to separation of church and state.

Policy and Procedure 1.25 was adopted by the City on May 1, 2012 in response to a letter from the ACLU Redwood Chapter requesting that sectarian prayers be discontinued at future City Council meetings. Since the adoption of 1.25, there has been only one invocation at a City Council meeting which was delivered by a member of the Hindu faith and a young man sang “God Bless America” during the time set for the invocation. Judge Watson noted that other than this one invocation and the singing of “God Bless America” nothing of a religious nature has taken place at City Council meetings since the adoption of the policy.

Beaton had contended that allowing ANY invocations at City Council meetings, whether sectarian or nonsectarian, violated three clauses of the California Constitution . . .

Mayor Frank Jäger said he was pleased with the ruling. “Invocations have a place in history in this country and I do not believe that the City of Eureka should be treated any differently than the United States Congress or the California State Legislature. The City welcomes everyone and does not force anyone that does not want to participate in the invocation to join in.”

. . . Bishop Scicluna met Pope Francis on December 12. The bishop later told the Times of Malta: “We discussed many aspects… and when I raised the issue that’s worrying me as a bishop [the right for gay couples to adopt] he encouraged me to speak out."

What we can say, I think, is that the media read far too much into the Pope's "who am I to judge?" comment about gay Christians in his impromptu interview on the way back from Rio. If Time magazine gave Francis its Person of the Year on the basis of his relaxed attitude to homosexuality, it should have done its homework more thoroughly.

Bishop Scicluna says the pope reiterated his opposition to homosexual adoption when he informed the pontiff that his critics were quoting Francis’ remarks.

“I said Holy Father they’re quoting you now, and not as Cardinal Bergoglio from 2010,” the bishop said. “But he reiterated that gay adoptions are ‘un rigresso antropologico’ [an anthropological regression]... I have to say the Pope himself was quite shocked.”

The Vatican felt compelled on Tuesday to deny that Pope Francis had "abolished sin", after . . . Eugenio Scalfari, an atheist who writes opinion pieces for the left-leaning La Repubblica newspaper, published an article titled "Francis' Revolution: He has abolished sin".

Scalfari, who held a long private conversation with the pope earlier this year and wrote about it several times, concluded in the complex, treatise-like article that Francis believed sin effectively no longer existed because God's mercy and forgiveness were "eternal".

Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi told Vatican Radio that "this affirmation that the pope has abolished sin" was wrong.

Most Americans Reject Godless Theory of Evolution

The latest Pew Research poll confirms, as has always been true in America, that most people do not believe that mankind evolved from lower life forms through natural processes as an accident over time.  In fact, public opinion is evolving AWAY from such atheistic propaganda in the 21st century, except among liberals (who will believe anything??).

This Pew poll shows that only 32% of Americans believe that evolution is “due to natural processes such as natural selection.”

However a competing Gallup poll found that Only 15% of Americans Believe Darwinian Evolution

Fewer U.S. Republicans believe in evolution now than five years ago, with a Pew Research poll finding an 11 percentage point drop.

Sixty-seven percent of Democratic respondents said they believe in evolution, a rise of 3 percent from 2009.

The Pew Research Religion & Public Life Project report released Monday found that 33% think "humans and other living things have existed in their present form since the beginning of time." . . . [and another] 24% of adults say "a supreme being guided the evolution of living things."

Among white evangelical Protestants, 64% say that humans have existed in their present form since the beginning of time. The survey found that half of black Protestants responded the same way. Whereas 78% of white mainline Protestants say that humans and other living things have evolved over time.

Seventy-six percent of the religiously unaffiliated, 68% of white non-Hispanic Catholics and 53% of Hispanic Catholics agreed with evolution.

Those saying that humans have evolved over time also were asked for their views on the processes responsible for evolution. Roughly a quarter of adults (24%) say that “a supreme being guided the evolution of living things for the purpose of creating humans and other life in the form it exists today,” while about a third (32%) say that evolution is “due to natural processes such as natural selection.”

. . . while fully 78% of white mainline Protestants say that humans and other living things have evolved over time, the group is divided over whether evolution is due to natural processes or whether it was guided by a supreme being (36% each). White non-Hispanic Catholics also are divided equally on the question (33% each). The religiously unaffiliated predominantly hold the view that evolution stems from natural processes (57%), while 13% of this group says evolution was guided by a supreme being. Of the white evangelical Protestants and black Protestants who believe that humans have evolved over time, most believe that a supreme being guided evolution.

. . . Younger adults are more likely than older generations to believe that living things have evolved over time. And those with more years of formal schooling are more likely than those with less education to say that humans and animals have evolved over time.

A poll out Monday shows that less than half – 43 percent – of those who identify with the Republican Party say they believe humans have evolved over time [either by accident or by God's hand], plunging from 54 percent four years ago. Forty-eight percent say they believe “humans and other living things have existed in their present form since the beginning of time,” up from 39 percent in 2009.

At 67 percent and 65 percent, respectively, the numbers of Democrats and independents who believe in evolution have remained more or less the same since 2009. . . .

The gaping partisan disparity remains, the analysis states, even when accounting for “differences in the racial and ethnic composition of Democrats and Republicans or differences in their levels of religious commitment.” But the dip from 2009 is a telling indicator of the growing influence in the GOP of the oft-yoked tea party-type ideologues and the “religious right.”

[It's now] a 24-point gap between the parties — and an increase from the 10-point difference the poll found in 2009, and the 13-point difference found in 2005.

According to one of the pollsters, the results were a bit of a surprise. CNN quotes her saying: "I didn't expect to see that kind of shift. I think it basically fits with a pattern of growing polarization. And we see that on some other science issues."

The poll also found that of those who believed in evolution, about a quarter said they also believed it was caused by a creator. Meaning they believed a supreme being set the wheels of evolution in motion at some point in the past.

Interestingly, differences weren't just found when comparing political affiliations. Gender also played a role, with men 10 percent more likely to believe in evolution than women.
