Catholic School Must Hire Homosexuals, Court Rules

In a potential landmark case countering the First Amendment, Massachusetts Superior Court Justice Douglas H. Wilkins ruled that Massachusetts anti-discrimination law trumps the religious liberty of the private all-girls Fontbonne Academy in Milton, Massachusetts (south of Boston), which argued that hiring a man in a same-sex "marriage" would be "inconsistent" with Catholic Church teachings.

Matthew Barrett was offered a job [in 2013] as Fontbonne Academy‘s food services director, but the offer was withdrawn after he listed his husband as his emergency contact.

Barrett sued. A judge ruled Wednesday that the school discriminated against him based on sexual orientation and gender. The judge rejected Fontbonne’s claim that it should be exempt from the law because it would infringe on free exercise of religion. The Catholic church opposes same-sex marriage.

The judge said the exemption applies only if a religious organization limits admission. Fontbonne is open to students and employees of all faiths.

The school argued that as a Catholic institution, it had an obligation for all staff to model the values of the church, which teaches that homosexual activity is immoral.

"He was not denied employment for any advocacy of same-sex marriage or gay rights; he only listed his husband as an emergency contact on a 'new hire' form," [Judge] Wilkins wrote.

He noted that Fontbonne also employs people who are not Catholic as well as those who are married outside the church.

Fontbonne said in a statement: "We have received the court's decision in this matter and are considering our options."

Barrett’s lawyer, Ben Klein of Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders, said the decision marks the first time a judge has rejected a religious organization’s assertion that it had a constitutional right not to hire employees because they were spouses in same-sex marriages.

Several legal experts contacted Thursday by the Globe said they believed the ruling was the first in a legal dispute involving a religious organization and an employee in a same-sex marriage.

Barrett, 45, who lives in Dorchester, sued Fontbonne in Norfolk Superior Court last year, claiming that the school discriminated against him on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender.

. . . John Bagley, attorney for Fontbonne, argued there is an exemption from employment laws for certain religious institutions.  . . . He said it would conflicted with teachings in theology class if students see an employee at the school who is engaging in a practice inconsistent with what is taught in the classroom.

"There are many activities at the school that are outside of the classroom setting in which spouses are invited," Bagley told the judge.

He also said when interviewed for the position then Head Mistress Mary Ellen Barnes told Barrett even though he would not be teaching he would have to "model the faith" as an employee of Fontbonne.

A political science associate professor at a well-known evangelical college in suburban Chicago is wearing a hijab to class and everywhere else during Advent to show “religious solidarity with Muslims” and to launch a Christian movement with Islam by wearing the mandatory head scarf for oppressed Muslim women.

The professor says as part of the Advent season, she will wear the hijab “to work at Wheaton College, to play in Chi-town, in the airport and on the airplane to my home state… and at church.”

Hawkins notes that she checked first with the Council on American Islamic Relations [CAIR] to make sure it was not offensive in any way for non-Muslim women to wear the hijab and she invites other women to join her effort as a way to express support and unity.

Since her controversial Facebook post last Thursday, Hawkins said that at least ten other people, including students, friends and even a mother of one of her former students, have told her that they will be taking part in wearing hijabs this Christmas season. She is not certain if all of them plan on wearing the hijab throughout the entire Advent or just for a day or two.

"I think that is the kind of unity through religious diversity that I am trying to accomplish through this is to have unity with women who are easily targeted because they wear their religion on their head," Hawkins stressed. "I really find it imperative to think about what it means to coexist as religionists. There are Christian missionaries who uphold these models of the faith who are doing the same thing as a way of reaching out to Muslims even as they try to spread the gospel. I am not sure if we see this is a way of sharing the gospel or as an act of religious solidarity. I think people do it all the time, just not in the U.S."

"I think woman wearing a cross or a man wearing a cross isn't necessarily deemed Christian but a woman wearing a hijab is always assumed to be Muslim, even though Jesus' mom wore a hijab. Mary, the mother of God, wore a hijab," Hawkins highlighted. " The context in the time is fortuitous to remind ourself that in some context, this is a cultural element of dress. Some of my friends who are missionaries in the Middle East wear the hijab while they live there everyday."

UPDATE 2/10/16: From "Wheaton College 'Same God' Prof. Says Jesus Is Her Rock on Difficult Journey From Advent to Lent" by Samuel Smith, Christian Post Reporter

. . . Wheaton Provost Stanton Jones recommended last month that the school begin the termination proceedings for Hawkins, who was placed on administrative leave in mid-December after she asserted that Christians and Muslims worship the same God.

On Saturday, it was announced in a press release that the school and Hawkins "found a mutual place of resolution and reconciliation." The statement added that the two sides "reached a confidential agreement under which they will part ways."

Although Hawkins issued a four-page theological statement on the matter days after she was suspended, the institution still felt that more theological discussion was needed before she could return to teach. Hawkins, however, made it clear to the administration that she would no longer have theological dialogue over the matter.

[Wheaton College President Philip] Ryken said reconciliation is not always easy or perfect, but the college and Hawkins are "moving forward in genuine friendship, wishing each other well and wanting to bless each other in our work."

The debate over Hawkins' comments continues to resonate throughout the Wheaton College community. Even as Ryken and Hawkins stood together in Chicago, roughly two dozen students, alumni and religious leaders were gathering outside the school's Edman Chapel to announce the launch of a nationwide fast that calls upon the Wheaton community and other evangelical Christian institutions to "confess and repent of the sins of racism, sexism and Islamophobia, and recognize that all humans have dignity and are created equal in the eyes of God."

As president, Ryken said he is committed to restoring "what is lost and repair what is broken" on campus. To do that, he has asked the college's board of trustees to review ways the college can improve how it addresses faculty and personnel issues in the future, particularly when questions arise that relate to the college's statement of faith. He added that the school stands for religious freedom and against the repression of anyone, including Muslims.

Wheaton College theology professor George Kalantzis said Hawkins provided great spiritual and moral leadership, as well as a safe and inviting learning environment, on a campus that greatly needed it.

Florida Bans Prayer at Christian Football Game

Although the Florida District 2A Championship slated Cambridge Christian School of Tampa vs. University Christian from Jacksonville, state officials barred a 30-second prayer from being said from the PA system prior to the matchup at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando. Nonetheless, the teams and fans joined in unamplified prayer to start the game.

“The facility is a public facility, predominantly paid for with public tax dollars, makes the facility ‘off limits’ under federal guidelines and precedent court cases.  In Florida Statutes, the FHSAA (host and coordinator of the event) is legally a ‘State Actor,’ we cannot legally permit or grant permission for such an activity.”

The decision was made Thursday in an email from the head of the Florida State High School Athletic Association, Dr. Roger Dearing. Dearing took less than four hours to review the issue [saying] because the game is being played at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, which is predominately paid for with tax dollars, and because the athletic association is a state agency, prayer is not allowed.

“Here’s the problem,” [Cambridge Christian's Tim] Euler said, “Florida State Legislature is opened up with prayer in a building that is paid by tax dollars. What is the difference?”

He adds, “If they can pray there, we can pray here, and I want them to be able to pray there and I want us to be able to pray here. So I think his reasoning is flawed at the core of it.”

. . . from government and media, to academia and the courts, we live in a society that, although correctly protecting the rights of many minorities, is far too inconsiderate of the rights of Christians.

The fear of lawsuits is making us vanilla clones of each other. Different views, ideas and perspectives should be shunned in favor of a one-size fits-all approach to life, education, opportunity and even sports. That is, unless you fit into one of government’s preferred and approved classes of people who deserve special treatment — of which being a Christian is not one.

N. Dakota Bans Prayer at Catholic School Football

Prayers will be heard over the PA system today, just like every other football day at Shanley High School, a Catholic school in Fargo, North Dakota where an emblematic Christian cross is displayed on the 50-yard line, despite a prayer ban by the state sports association claiming that prayer is illegal when the Catholic players compete on their own field during a playoff game.

A non-profit law firm has asked the North Dakota State High School Activities Association [NDHSAA] to suspend its ban on prayer during a football playoff game at Fargo Shanley High School.

KFGO says attorney Peter Breen of the Thomas More Society in Chicago is representing Shanley High School. Breen says he thinks the policy may be unconstitutional.

Breen says the Supreme Court has ruled it's unconstitutional to require private schools to give up their religious identity in order to participate in government sponsored programs.

"It's played at their facility, but it is a postseason game," [NDHSAA] assistant director Justin Fletschock said. "The postseason contests are controlled by high school activities association."

"This 'sponsorship' is illusory; in all material respects, Shanley will be hosting the game exactly as it does in the regular season — it will, for example, run ticket sales, organize and sell concessions, provide an announcer to announce the game, and provide down markers," the letter from Peter Breen and Jocelyn Floyd said.

“The Constitution doesn’t require the State of North Dakota to police pre-game prayers at Christian and Catholic high schools,” said Peter Breen, Thomas More Society Special Counsel. “People of faith don’t give up their freedoms of speech and religion just because they are engaged in state-sponsored sporting events. We urge the Activities Association to allow member schools with faith traditions to express their faith during post-season games, just as they do during the regular season.”

Shanley has led a prayer at its school football stadium before each of its regular season games, but it is prohibited Association policy from leading a prayer before the playoff game, as Association representatives have claimed that such a prayer would violate the Establishment Clause of the United States Constitution.

The religious identity of the hosting school will be unquestionable, as all attendees will also be “looking down on a massive Christian cross, featured in the Shanley crest, which is emblazoned in the center of the field at the fifty-yard line.”

. . . now that it is playoff time, the school says the [NDHSAA] association specifically told them they were not allowed to pray at Saturday’s game, which will be held at Shanley High’s field.

Shanley High School has teamed up with the Thomas More Society, a religious liberty legal group, and intends to defy the rule. The school sent a letter to the association Friday informing them of their intention to disobey, and that letter was provided to The Daily Caller News Foundation.

Shanley High School argues in the letter they are clearly a religious institution not subject to separation of church and state requirements.

While the association says allowing the prayers would violate the Establishement Clause as an official endorsement of religion, the school argues that actually denying the right to pray is the real violation of the First Amendment.

Association leaders say [the prayer ban has] been the case during playoff season for 15 years. Although private schools are allowed to broadcast prayers before regular-season home games, playoff games are technically hosted by the association, which is public.

In previous postseason games held at Shanley, the school has skipped its usual prayer, said Michael Smith, superintendent of the Saint John Paul II Catholic Schools Network.

But for several years, administrators have started to wonder whether that’s right.

“We really wanted to make a formal request to the high school association and let them know there is a different perspective, and we wanted to hear their take on that,” Smith said.

Smith said Shanley has prayers before all of the school’s home events. At its football game against Central Cass three weeks ago, the Rev. Charles LaCroix led the crowd in prayer.

Lesbians Sue Christian School for Biblical Beliefs

A lesbian "married couple" plan to file a civil rights lawsuit against a Christian school in San Diego, California for not enrolling their 5-year-old daughter based on the following from the school's handbook:

“Mt. Erie Christian Academy [MECA] is a religious, Bible-believing institution providing education in a distinct Christian environment, and it believes that its biblical role is to work in conjunction with the home to mold students to be Christ like. On those occasions in which the atmosphere or conduct within a particular home is counter to or in opposition to the biblical lifestyle that the school teaches, the school reserves the right, within its sole discretion, to refuse admission of an applicant or to discontinue enrollment of a student. This includes, but is not necessarily limited to, living in, condoning or supporting sexual immorality; practicing homosexual lifestyle or alternative gender identity; promoting such practices; or otherwise having the inability to support the moral principles of the school (Leviticus 20:13a; Romans 1:21-27; Matthew 19:4-6; I Corinthians 6:9-20).”

Mt. Erie Christian Academy in San Diego is not allowing the child to attend [kindergarten] because her parents are lesbians, one of her mothers says.

According to 10News.com, the student attended both preschool and summer school at the institution.

Sheena, a stay-at-home mom who asked 10News.com not to use her last name, said the parents were summoned to the school the Friday before Labor Day. Her wife, Lashaune, is in the navy and is now away on deployment.

While school administrators have not commented about the case to the media, ABC 10 cited a woman identified as "Kailyn" who described herself as the director of Mt. Erie, who told them that although the school has a non-discrimination policy in place, that the "Bible says homosexuality is a sin," and that "we don't condone any sinful lifestyles."

"The least Christian thing I could think of is turning away a child," Rev. MacArthur Flournoy of the Religion and Faith Program at the Human Rights Campaign said in a statement on HRC's website. "The message this school is sending to this child is that God is not there for her nor for her parents. There's absolutely nothing Godly in their actions."

Added Johanna Eager, Director of HRC Foundation’s Welcoming Schools program: “There is no doubt substantial harm is done to schools, children, teachers and families when a school tells a student that something is wrong with them or their family.”

San Diego attorney Eugene Iredale said . . . both California and federal cases have upheld the right of private institutions to bar membership based on religious beliefs.  That is exactly the opposite of discrimination laws that pertain to publicly-funded programs and businesses that cater to the general public.

Iredale said he believes that in the next five to 10 years, the U.S. Supreme Court will have to decide a case like the one involving Mt. Erie because of changing public policy regarding homosexuality.

Sheena said she's ready to fight for it.

Team 10 reached out to the National Center for Lesbian Rights.

"This type of policy is out of touch with reality," said Cathy Sakimura, deputy director and family law director for the NCLR.

Sakimura said barring Sheena's daughter from school could create a culture of fear among children at the school, allowing children to think it’s not OK to be LGBT or divorced. She hopes the Mt. Erie situation will start an important conversation within the church community, one that leans toward better acceptance. She said many parents within the church and school community may be ready to change the policies to better reflect that.

Solicitor General Donald Verrilli made comments before the Supreme Court foreshadowing legal problems for faith-based schools. When asked by Justice Samuel Alito if a faith-based school could lose its tax-exempt status over its views on same-sex marriage, Verrilli replied, "It's certainly going to be an issue. I don't deny that."

Joe Carter, editor for The Gospel Coalition, wrote last spring that the Supreme Court's decision on same-sex marriage could force some schools to either adjust views on sexuality or give-up non-profit status, making them for-profit schools. That could mean faith-based schools won't be in existence much longer.

So, this news organization reaches out to an attorney who likens Christian practices to human sacrifice and amputation. Wow. Oh, and their other source? It's the deputy director and family law director for the National Center for Lesbian Rights, who said, "This type of policy is out of touch with reality."

"In employment policy and practice, Hope College [in Holland, Michigan] has always followed the state's legal definition of marriage," school president, John Knapp, wrote in a statement. "Spouses are eligible for benefits, so long as their marriage is legally recognized the state of Michigan."

"Notre Dame is a Catholic university and endorses a Catholic view of marriage. However, it will follow the relevant civil law and begin to implement this change immediately," the university emailed to employees.

And on Tuesday, Baylor University — the world's largest Baptist university — dropped a ban on "homosexual acts" in its sexual conduct policy, according to the Houston Chronicle.

While before, Baylor's policy said homosexual acts were a misuse of "God's gift," it now says the university "will be guided by the biblical understanding that human sexuality is a gift from God and that physical sexual intimacy is to be expressed in the context of marital fidelity."

Hope provides benefits to spouses legally recognized by the state of Michigan, said Jennifer Fellinger, vice president for public affairs and marketing at Hope.

Prior to June 26, that meant if a Hope employee was married to someone of the same sex in another state, the couple would not receive the benefits that a heterosexual married couple would at Hope.

As a result of Michigan’s ban on same-sex marriage being overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court, a same-sex spouse of a Hope employee is now eligible for spousal benefits.

Hope is a private, Christian college affiliated with the Reformed Church in America. The RCA has historically stuck to a Biblical definition of marriage — between one man and one woman.

On Monday, Hope College President John Knapp sent an email to the Hope community explaining that while Hope will continue to offer benefits to spouses of employees recognized by the state, the Supreme Court's ruling has effectively changed the definition of marriages recognized by the state of Michigan to include same-sex couples.

Knapp explained that after consulting with members of the Hope community and other Christian educators, it was determined that it's in the best interest of the school to keep the same employment policy and extend benefits same-sex spouses recognized in Michigan.

Knapp also explains that although the school will extend benefits to same-sex spouses, that does not mean the school will open use of the Dimnent Chapel for same-sex wedding ceremonies.

Although employees' same-sex spouses will now receive benefits from Hope college, Hope's statement on sexuality still states: "This biblical witness calls us to a life of chastity among the unmarried and the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman."

Baylor University, one of the nation’s most prominent Christian colleges, has dropped a phrase from its student policy on sexual misconduct that specifically forbade “homosexual acts.” Although the revised code does not appear to alter the school’s policy barring same-sex relationships, the change comes as many Christian colleges grapple with how to define their standards for student conduct.

In a document outlining how the school will apply the new policy, Baylor says that it will “be interpreted by the Baptist University in a manner consistent with the Baptist Faith and Message of 1963,” a reference to a doctrinal document from the Southern Baptist Convention. That document, among other things, defines marriage as “the uniting of one man and one woman in covenant commitment for a lifetime.”

Lori Fogleman, Baylor’s assistant vice president for media communications, said in an e-mail to The Washington Post on Monday that the changes “were made because we didn’t believe the language reflected Baylor’s caring community.” The new policy went into effect in May of this year.

"Hard questions arise when people of faith exercise religion in ways that may be seen to conflict with the new right to same-sex marriage -- when, for example, a religious college provides married student housing only to opposite-sex married couples," Roberts wrote.

[Christian evangelical colleges], some legal experts believe, may now face challenges to their tax-exempt status or other government benefits. . . .

Seventy leaders of Christian colleges and schools wrote to congressional leaders this month -- prior to the Supreme Court's ruling -- asking Congress to enact a law to protect religious colleges and schools that want to keep their current policies on gay people. . . .

Michael A. Olivas, director of the Institute for Higher Education Law and Governance at the University of Houston and author of The Law and Higher Education, said that the Supreme Court ruling should prompt Christian colleges to rethink their policies. "In an area of social change that is as well defined as this issue is, why would any college want to violate the law by banning relationships that are not only legal, but if they led to marriage would be legal and recognizable in every jurisdiction in the country?" he asked

Ave Maria Law Dean Emeritus Eugene Milhizer told Catholic Education Daily that “religious freedom is endangered,” arguing “the recasting of the right of ‘freedom of religion’ to a notion of ‘freedom of worship’” as “an effort to expel religious influence from the public square.”

Republican Senator Mike Lee of Utah has introduced the First Amendment Defense Act, which he said in an NPR interview is designed to protect the freedom of religious colleges and universities that recognize marriage as "an institution between a man and a woman."

A campaign by the Americans United for Separation of Church and State launched after the Supreme Court decision seeks to thwart colleges and other religious institutions seeking exemption from the implications of the ruling. According to the Christian Post, its executive director Rev Barry Lynn said: "We will work to put a stop to reckless definitions of 'religious freedom' that are really just excuses to infringe on the rights of others."

Lynn said: "Even now, I would not want to be a person at a fundamentalist academy who is trying to defend the practice, that is taking a reasonable amount of government funds and refusing to allow a same-sex married couple to live in the married student housing. I think even now, that would be on the edge of the indefensible."

In response to a question from The Christian Post, Lynn, who is an ordained minister for the Church of Christ, contended that Christian colleges refusing to provide married housing to married same-sex couples is akin to schools not allowing interracial married couples to occupy married housing.

In 1983, the United States Supreme Court ruled that Bob Jones University could legally have its tax-exempt status revoked for engaging in the discriminatory practice of not allowing mixed-race dating.

. . . Maggie Garrett, legislative director for Americans United, said that the organization will work to oppose the First Amendment Defense Act [recently introduced in Congress by Senator Mike Lee of Utah].

Catholic Religion Teacher Suspended: Too Biblical

Patricia Jannuzzi, a theology teacher at Immaculata High School in Somerville, New Jersey was forced by her employer to scrub her Facebook page for espousing Biblical views on marriage and homosexual behavior.  The Catholic School has placed her on administrative leave because her views are "completely inconsistent with our policy and position as a Catholic Christian community."

Januzzi's Facebook page, which was public at one point, was removed Wednesday morning.

[An] alumnus, Scott Lyons, who is gay and had Januzzi as a teacher, shared a letter on Facebook he sent to her after reading one of her posts. He said in the letter that he remembers Januzzi's classes to be "focused on love and acceptance" but that he is "offended and disappointed" by her recent posts.

UPDATE 3/25/15: From "New e-mails cast doubt on diocese’s story about firing Patricia Jannuzzi over Facebook flap" by Ben Johnson, LifeSiteNews.com

When her family stated that Jannuzzi had been placed on unpaid leave and told her contract would not be renewed in September, the diocese [of Metuchen, NJ, headed by Bishop Paul G. Bootkoski] denied the statements. But family attorney David Oakley has released e-mails that cast a shadow over the diocese's public statements.

. . . on March 12, Immaculata High School principal Jean Kline wrote, “Upon further reflection and upon receiving the advice of the Advisory Council, I have decided to place you on administrative leave without pay effective immediately.”

A national radio campaign, launched by Michael Hichborn of the Lepanto Institute, has asked Bishop Bootkoski to explain his position fully. Reviewing the charge and counter-charges, Frank Walker, the assistant news editor of PewSitter.com, wrote that Bishop Bootkoski “seems to have lied.”

To avoid the appearance of evil, the family has suspended its collections [from the donations website] pending further information about their mother's employment prospects. “The latest announcement from the diocese suggests that we may have been misinformed about their decision to terminate her in August,” the family wrote.

. . . the college, which is aligned with the Associate Reformed Presbyterian tradition, released a strongly worded denouncement of homosexuality on campus that many read to be a behavioral ban. The document, titled “Statement on Human Sexuality,” was submitted by the Student Services and Athletic Committee and adopted by the board of trustees last Friday.

The statement will now be added to the school’s official manuals and used to further make procedural rulings, according to an article posted to Erskine’s official Web site on Thursday.

It is unclear how the newly adopted statement will affect student life going forward; however, Erskine said in a followup statement on Friday that the new language “does not ‘ban’ any individual or class of individuals from attending Erskine.”

Reaction from those outside the college has been mostly negative, as well, with many taking to Twitter to denounce what they see as a step in the wrong direction in a state that has already legalized gay marriage.

In some parts of the country, college accreditation boards are demanding conservative Christian colleges revise what they believe to be discriminatory policies and positions. . . .

It’s in response to his decision to include a morality clause for teachers that tells them they must honor the church’s teachings, both on and off the job. The archbishop specifically cited opposition to abortion, contraception and homosexuality.

The lawmakers say the new rules, “conflict with settled areas of law and foment a discriminatory environment in the communities we serve.”

It goes on to say the clause, “strikes a divisive tone, which stands in stark contrast to the values that define the Bay Area and it’s history.”

Cordileone has spurred protests with his addition to the [high school faculty] handbook --  which guides the nearly 500 school employees -- because it focuses almost exclusively on sexual morality in language many consider harsh.

It asks employees to "affirm and believe" that "adultery, masturbation, fornication, the viewing of pornography and homosexual relations" are "gravely evil." Artificial-reproductive technology, contraception and abortion are described similarly.

The "fundamental demands of justice," it continues, "require that the civil law preserve the definition of marriage as the union of one man and one woman."

Cordileone also is seeking to define teachers as ministers in the collective bargaining agreement now under negotiation with the teachers' union -- a move that would probably strip them of recourse under anti-discrimination law in the event of dismissal.

San Francisco’s archbishop is trying to make its Catholic schools more Catholic, but city and state officials are poised to push back, saying any effort to discriminate against employees will be met with legal action.

“Catholic schools exist to affirm and proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ as held and taught by his Catholic Church,” Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone said in his explanation for the addition of language against homosexuality, same-sex marriage, abortion, contraceptives and artificial insemination. Teachers who publicly violate that language could face discipline or dismissal.

That’s a problem, said Supervisor Mark Farrell, who said he will introduce a resolution Tuesday calling on Cordileone to resolve the issue of the morality clauses in a way that preserves the rights and dignity of teachers while respecting the church.

He also said city officials were looking at legal options to prevent discriminatory employment practices, if necessary.

From "SF archbishop answers disapproving letter from lawmakers" by The Associated Press 2/20/15

Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone wrote the message in response to a letter sent to him earlier this week by California lawmakers urging him to remove from a teachers' handbook morality clauses they say are discriminatory and divisive.

On Tuesday, Democratic Assemblymen Phil Ting of San Francisco and Kevin Mullin of San Mateo made public a letter to Cordileone written by them and signed by every lawmaker representing the communities served by the four Catholic high schools in San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin counties.

The statement outlines the church's teaching that using contraception is a sin and that sex outside of marriage, whether it is in the form of adultery, masturbation, pornography or gay sex, is "gravely evil."

[The faculty handbook] says "administrators, faculty and staff of any faith or no faith are expected to arrange and conduct their lives so as not to visibly contradict, undermine or deny" church doctrine and practice.

It calls on Catholic employees to additionally strive to "conform their hearts, minds and consciences, as well as their public and private behavior" to church teaching.

"There is no doubt about it that ... many people's notions of what is appropriate in the sexual area have changed, and that includes many Catholics," [archdiocesan vicar for administration and moderator of the curia, Jesuit Fr. John] Piderit said. "What the archbishop wants to do is reaffirm that ... the four archdiocesan schools as institutions still teach and defend the Catholic faith as it appears in the Catechism. He goes out of his way to say that the issues that he chose are not the most important, but they are important issues, especially for young people, because they are at a time when they are forming their views on these things. But he recognizes that there are many other issues. However, he calls these the 'hot-button' issues -- the issues upon which there has been severe changes in both secular society and in the thinking of many Catholics over the past 30 or so years."

Mich. Catholic School Attacked for Firing Lesbian

Yet another teacher at a Roman Catholic school has emerged from the shadows as a lesbian resulting in her being fired for breach of contract.  This time it's Barbara Webb, 33, who two years ago secretly married Kristen Lasecki, 33, in Canada, but is now unnaturally pregnant and legally unmarried in Michigan, thus violating multiple aspects of the morality clause of Marian High School in suburban Bloomfield Hills near Detroit.

When she told her employer she was pregnant, she says she was given two options: resign or be fired.

The [school morality] clause forbids teachers from publicly engaging in or endorsing “actions or beliefs directly contrary to the teachings and standards of the Roman Catholic faith and morality.”

The Catholic church forbids artificial insemination and homosexual relationships.

In August, the school offered to pay for her healthcare through May if she left quietly, Webb said. She refused. Not just because the offer was insulting to her, but she felt it sent the wrong message to her students.

The firing of a former chemistry teacher at a Catholic, all-girls school in Bloomfield Hills for what she believes was her “nontraditional” pregnancy has sparked outrage across the nation, spurring an outpouring of support and a social media and letter-writing campaign.

The news of Webb’s firing spread across social media on Aug. 27 after she announced her termination in a Facebook post that was shared more than 1,000 times. Webb said she learned she was pregnant in June and told her employer in July and was fired in mid-August.

An employee at the school who asked not to be identified because of fear of reprisal said staff members were told not to discuss Webb’s firing.

“We’ve let Barb know that if it would help her, we would step down in support of her,” the staffer said. “We are willing to support Barb when she decides what avenue she would like to pursue. There was a letter going around all the students in support of Barb. We believe it is wrong.”

Protesters holding signs promoting human rights for all citizens lined Lahser Road in front of Marian High School on Sunday morning to support a gay, pregnant teacher who was fired from the Catholic girls school.

More than 100 people attended Sunday’s nearly two-hour rally.

Brigid Johnson, 17, a senior at Marian, said the teacher’s absence was not explained to students. Teachers have told students they are forbidden to speak about it, she said.

She and other students joined in the demonstration Sunday, too, carrying signs and waving flags in solidarity.

Over 70 people showed up for the demonstration. Several Facebook pages have been started in support of Webb, attracting thousands of supporters from around the country – the majority of which are graduates from Marian.

Diana Callaghan from the class of 2002 at Marian isn't surprised by the growing movement.

"I'm impressed but not surprised," Callaghan said. "The Marian community has fostered many women who are very strong-minded. If you look at the Facebook pages, people are writing some of the most beautiful messages of support. I don't think this is new that our community is in support of diversity."

"I'm just very confused about the school's decision," said Jane Bonanata, a Beverly Hills resident who graduated from Marian in 1979. "I don't understand it because the IHM Sisters taught us deep faith, to have a courageous spirit and to stand up for social justice … to me, they should be leading the change here."
