Maine Church Leaders Agree with Atheists on Prayer
After Americans United for Separation of Church and State threatened to sue South Bristol School (Central Lincoln County School System) if the usual blessing is said at the annual launch of student-built boats, local church leaders ignorantly agreed with the atheists that such a blessing is unconstitutional and said the school was right to cancel any activity resembling prayer.

In December, South Bristol School Principal Scott White received a letter from Americans United for Separation of Church and State claiming that the traditional blessing of the fleet, held each summer for boats built by eighth-grade students at the Maine Maritime Museum, was unconstitutional because the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution prohibits public schools from sponsoring prayers at events.
The letter was prompted by a complaint from an anonymous community member.
Eighth-grader Jordan Farrin said Friday’s crowd was larger than in previous years. Those gathered for the event — many wearing bright red T-shirts announcing “It is Tradition,” were angry and still shocked that the school had been told to change its ceremony.

Texas Law Tells Schools to Ignore Atheist Threats
House Bill 308, signed this week by Gov. Rick Perry, is necessary due to a flood of intimidation tactics nationwide by a variety of atheist lawyer organizations aimed at silencing Christians in public schools. The law assures Texas school officials that the U.S. Supreme Court has repeatedly upheld the constitutionality of religious freedom in schools.

The bill's sponsor, Houston Republican Rep. Dwayne Bohac, says he drafted the legislation after his eight-year-old son Reagan told him that his public school had decorated a "holiday tree" with "holiday ornaments."

Cloninger said his nieces and nephews have never met his husband, and although he has told his brother he is gay, they never discuss it.
A senior warden at St. Thomas Episcopal Church near Dupont Circle, Cloninger said his family has become more accepting, but only to a degree.

The survey finds that LGBT adults are less religious than the general public. Roughly half (48%) say they have no religious affiliation, compared with 20% of the public at large.
The LGBT community is setting a good standard: if you are to submit to anything, let it be your own divine will.
According to the poll, lopsided majorities describe the Muslim religion (84%), the Mormon Church (83%), the Catholic Church (79%) and evangelical churches (73%) as unfriendly toward people who are LGBT. And among all LGBT adults, about three-in-ten (29%) say they have been made to feel unwelcome in a place of worship.
The fight for equality and overcoming discrimination against gay should begin at overcoming the influence of the churches, mosques, and temples. LGBT American’s have encountered too much heavy-handed abuse from the conflicted religious community; they must have pride in themselves if they are to ever accomplish this gargantuan feat of self-acceptance.

And among all LGBT adults, about three-in-ten (29%) say they have been made to feel unwelcome in a place of worship.
The fight for equality and overcoming discrimination against gay should begin at overcoming the influence of the churches, mosques, and temples. LGBT American’s have encountered too much heavy-handed abuse from the conflicted religious community; they must have pride in themselves if they are to ever accomplish this gargantuan feat of self-acceptance.

'Jesus' Said in Texas Preschool, Atheists Threaten
A little girl said a dozen-word prayer that included Jesus' name at a preschool ceremony in Amelia Elementary School (Beaumont, TX) resulting in a threatening letter sent to the superintendent from the Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation (tipped off by a lone parent attending the ceremony).

IRS Tells Pro-lifers: Either Shut Up or Be Taxed
Although America's highest courts have repeatedly confirmed the First Amendment right of "sidewalk counseling" at abortion clinics, the anti-life Internal Revenue Service denied pro-life organizations the same timely tax-exempt status given to liberal groups who perform anti-Christian brow-beating.

An Internal Revenue Service agent was recorded on audiotape telling a pro-life organization that they had to remain neutral on the issue of abortion and lectured the group’s president about forcing its religious beliefs on others.
In a May 2011 letter to the pro-life group, [IRS agent Sherry] Wan took issue with their prayer and evangelism efforts.
“It appears that some of your activities, conducted or plan to conduct, may be neither educational nor charitable in nature no matter how sincere of your religious belief or how important of your viewpoint,” Wan wrote.
[The Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) attorney Erik Stanley said,] “What the IRS is doing here is unconstitutional – attempting to tell an organization that it could not advocate its viewpoint and still be considered educational and gain a tax exemption.”

The IRS sent Pro-Life Revolution a grammatically disastrous letter dated February 5, 2013 requesting additional information about its protesting activities.
“You called for faithful Christians to praying and counseling in front of the abortion referring clinic, conducting activities in front of another entity, which take opposite positions, appears more like a type of protest, which interferes the normal operation of a business with an effect of humiliating the persons working or receives the service there,” according to the letter, which lists Sherry Wan as the IRS agent to contact.
The IRS denied tax-exempt status to the group Coalition for Life of Iowa and forced leaders of the group, in a June 2009 phone call, to promise that they do not organize protests outside of Planned Parenthood.

Now, the lead attorney in the case has given a new interview in which he explains the IRS agent in question was ideologically opposed to the pro-life group’s mission and that the targeting came a result of that rather than the agent’s not understanding laws or IRS rules related to nonprofits.

IL School Board OKs Kids' Demands for Dirty Book
Months ago, when parents in Glen Ellyn, Illinois learned that teachers encouraged middle school students to read The Perks of Being a Wallflower (a novel that includes profanity, homosexuality, bestiality, masturbation, incest, and rape) the school board restricted the book at the parents' request, but after a protest by the children, last night a new school board voted 6 to 1 to reinstate teaching the book. Teachers, librarians, journalists and of course the kids are all ecstatic.

During the District 41 school board meeting that packed more than 100 students, parents and concerned citizens into the district offices, supporters wore large purple buttons that said "I read banned books" while others held yellow flowers. More than 25 people addressed the board, many making emotional pleas on the issue.
Several parents and students also spoke in support of the parents who started the debate when they complained about the mature content in the book.
Several board members agreed that a more detailed policy needs to be in place and will be discussed over the summer by members of the board's Policy Committee. For now, board members approved the language in a revised letter that will go out to parents at the beginning of the school year that describes the kinds of books available as a choice for independent reading.

Parents would have to sign the letter and return it to school before their child could check out books from the classroom library. They could also comment on the letter if there are texts they do not want their child reading.
The letter states, in part, that some of the books students may select as independent reading options from the classroom library may "address a variety of issues, including, but not limited to sex, drugs, mental illness and violence. Some may include strong language."
A district reconsideration committee primarily composed of teachers and administrators recommended the book be retained for independent reading by eighth-grade students and not be used for instructional purposes, but the school board voted 4-2 April 29 to remove the book from the shelves.
The controversy also got the attention of national groups such as the National Coalition Against Censorship and American Library Association, which sent letters to school board members asking them to overturn the ban.

[Earlier in the school year] . . . Principal Christopher Dransoff proposed the option of teachers in the future sending out permission slips about controversial books prior to allowing students to read them, a compromise parents were willing to accept.
Dransoof soon discovered, however, that the majority of 8th grade literacy teachers would not accept such a compromise, apparently believing that such prior notification and parental permission constituted censorship and an implicit indictment of their expert judgment.
This intransigence on the part of the teachers resulted in parents pursuing the issue with the school board which [on April 29, 2013] voted 4-2 to remove the book from the middle school, which, in turn, intensified the community controversy. . . .
In addition to the arrogant unwillingness of teachers to ask for permission to teach such a controversial book, it is reported that three of the teachers, Lynn Bruno, Ali Tannenbaum, and [Tina] Booth, initiated classroom discussions on the topic, ginning up support for their position among students. It’s reported that Booth suggested to students in her class that the school board vote was unfair, that it was censorship, and that students have a “voice.” Apparently, Booth believes that the voices of 14 year-olds should have greater influence than the voices of parents and school board members. Such use of class time to engage students in a public controversy and attempt to manipulate student opinion is unprofessional and an abuse of their power and role as public servants.
Teachers who teach controversial books like The Perks of Being a Wallflower don’t really care about the feelings, beliefs, or values of conservative parents. They don’t really care about the diminished academic experience of kids who are opted out of reading controversial texts and have to spend time alone in another room reading a different book. They don’t care if they create conflict between conservative parents and their children who may resent being set apart from other kids. And they don’t care how these students feel when isolated.

Florida Law Protects Infants that Obama Would NOT
Florida is now added to the list of states that require protection of the life of any baby who survives attempted murder by an abortionist. Barack Obama was diligent while in the Illinois legislature to ensure that abortionists in that state are permitted to discard live babies in the trash (see bottom).

Florida Gov. Rick Scott has signed into law HB 1129 (“Infants Born Alive"), the only one of four pro-life bills that passed both chambers of the Florida Legislature during the 2013 session.
The new law, which passed by unanimous vote in both the House and the Senate, provides that any infant who survives an abortion attempt is entitled to the same civil rights and privileges, and the same standard of medical care, as one who is born alive in the course of a regular delivery.
Senate Majority Leader Lizbeth Benaquisto, R-Fort Myers, thanked Scott for signing the bill, and said it was necessary “in light of events around the country,” a clear allusion to Philadelphia abortionist Kermit Gosnell, who was convicted last month of murdering several infants born alive in the course of his medical practice.

School Cuts Mic on Christian Valedictorian Speech
Joshua (Texas) High School administrators warned valedictorian Remington Reimer that if he strayed from the school-authorized content of his graduation speech his microphone would be turned off, and after numerous references to his faith in Jesus Christ, indeed the school silenced him.

. . . the measure requires the Pentagon to implement regulations within 120 days after the bill becomes law. The defense secretary must consult with “official military faith-group representatives who endorse military chaplains” before the regulations are issued.

According to Ron Crews of the group Chaplain Alliance for Religious Liberty, the serviceman was investigated, reprimanded, threatened with judicial action, and given a bad efficiency report after he sent invitations that read, “In honor of my promotion and in honor of the Defense of Marriage Act, I’m serving Chick-fil-A sandwiches at my promotion party.”
Crews told Fox News that Army officials said the soldier was “no longer a team player and was not performing up to standards. This is just one little example of a case of a soldier just wanting to express his views and now he’s been jumped on by the military.”

New Yorkers Could Become Extinct due to Abortions
Gov. Andrew Cuomo has announced a plan to increase abortion in New York state, already the abortion capital of America. In New York City, the majority of black children never make it out of the womb alive and nearly half of all pregnancies end in abortion.

Cuomo drew swift opposition in January after he issued his rousing, repeated battle cry of: "Because it's her body, it's her choice!" in his State of the State address that ignited supporters seeking expansion of abortion rights. But Cuomo has framed his proposal as simply protecting the current rights under the Roe v. Wade court decision in 1973, which is widely supported in public opinion polls and in the Senate and Assembly.
"The women's equality bill language has been crafted in a way that creates a real litmus test on Roe v. Wade for members of both parties, making it impossible to vote against for anyone who wants to say they support a woman's right to choose," said Cuomo spokesman Matt Wing.
New York state law enacted three years before Roe v. Wade allows late-term abortions after 24 weeks only when a woman's life is danger. The 1973 federal law allows late-term abortions if a woman's health is danger — a lower hurdle.
Supporters of Cuomo's proposal also see a need to protect women in the event Roe v. Wade is struck down by a more conservative U.S. Supreme Court.

A poll released this morning by Quinnipiac University finds two-thirds of New Yorkers surveyed back Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s proposal to create an affirmative right to an abortion and codify in state law federal court rulings that allow women to have a late-term abortion for health reasons.
Quinnipiac broke down its response to the Cuomo-proposal question by age, race, gender and party affiliation. Republicans were split, with 46 percent of those surveyed indicating support compared to 45 percent who were opposed and 9 percent who were unsure. Support among men and women was roughly the same — within the poll’s three percent margin of error. The poll found 58 percent of self-identified Catholics supported the proposal, compared to 32 percent who said they oppose it.
Different polls, including one commissioned by the pro-life Chiaroscuro Foundation, have phrased questions differently and found less support for abortion.

"The women's equality bill language has been crafted in a way that creates a real litmus test on Roe v. Wade for members of both parties, making it impossible to vote against for anyone who wants to say they support a woman's right to choose," said Cuomo spokesman Matt Wing.
New York state law enacted three years before Roe v. Wade allows late-term abortions after 24 weeks only when a woman's life is danger. The 1973 federal law allows late-term abortions if a woman's health is danger — a lower hurdle.
Supporters of Cuomo's proposal also see a need to protect women in the event Roe v. Wade is struck down by a more conservative U.S. Supreme Court.

A poll released this morning by Quinnipiac University finds two-thirds of New Yorkers surveyed back Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s proposal to create an affirmative right to an abortion and codify in state law federal court rulings that allow women to have a late-term abortion for health reasons.
Quinnipiac broke down its response to the Cuomo-proposal question by age, race, gender and party affiliation. Republicans were split, with 46 percent of those surveyed indicating support compared to 45 percent who were opposed and 9 percent who were unsure. Support among men and women was roughly the same — within the poll’s three percent margin of error. The poll found 58 percent of self-identified Catholics supported the proposal, compared to 32 percent who said they oppose it.
Different polls, including one commissioned by the pro-life Chiaroscuro Foundation, have phrased questions differently and found less support for abortion.

We are profoundly distressed by the introduction of a bill in New York State today that would ease restrictions in state law on late-term abortion and runs the serious risk of broadly expanding abortion access at all stages of gestation. This legislation would add a broad and undefined “health” exception for late-term abortion and would repeal the portion of the penal law that governs abortion policy, opening the door for non-doctors to perform abortions and potentially decriminalizing even forced or coerced abortions. In addition, we find the conscience protection in the bill to be vague and insufficient, and we are concerned about the religious liberty of our health facilities. While the bill’s proponents say it will simply “codify” federal law, it is selective in its codification. Nowhere does it address the portions of federal laws that limit abortion, such as the ban on taxpayer funding, the ban on partial birth abortion or protections for unborn victims of violence.

Lord's Prayer at S.Car. Graduation, Atheists Fume
After the Pickens County (South Carolina) School Board voted against prayer at school events and meetings, all in response to a barrage of threats from out-of-town atheists, Liberty High School Valedictorian Roy Costner IV veered off his "approved speech" at the graduation ceremony and prayed -- much to the approval of those in attendance.

Costner finished, pointing his finger in the air for emphasis, saying, "For Thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen," followed by more cheers and applause.
Eby said, "From the ACLU sending FOIA requests to every district in the state this year after the Chesterfield County case, then the Freedom From Religion Foundation sent us a complaint about religion at board meetings and some other issues as well. That is why the reaction to the prayer at graduation was loud."

Senate Codifies Gay Agenda in School Reform Bill
Democrats in Congress, eager to further recruitment of children into the homosexual lifestyle as sexual playmates for wealthy donors, are Hell-bent to create a special provision to snare troubled children -- all under the guise of anti-bullying rules for schools nationwide, buried in the 1,150-page reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act.

Under the [Senate] bill, schools that don’t take strong measures against bullying or discrimination against LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered] students would see their federal funding reduced or eliminated.
. . . Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn) reintroduced the Student Non-Discrimination Act (SNDA) as a stand alone measure Tuesday.
“Our nation’s civil rights laws protect our children from bullying due to race, sex, religion, disability, and national origin,” Franken said. “My proposal extends these protections to our gay and lesbian students who shouldn’t ever feel afraid of going to school. I’m also pleased my provision is now a part of the education bill that will soon be debated in the Senate Education Committee.”
SNDA was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives earlier this year by Reps. Jared Polis, (D-Colo.) and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.).
SNDA is closely modeled after Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (20 U.S.C. §§ 1681-1688), which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex and provides legal recourse to redress such discrimination

The supporters praised the language as similar to Title IX, the federal law chiefly known for mandating gender equity in high school and collegiate sports.
The bill bans discrimination against students who are gay — or who are perceived as gay — in any program that receives federal education dollars. Schools that do not provide sufficient protection to gays and lesbians could find their dollars cut.
"These provisions will help to ensure that all students, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation, are treated fairly and afforded equal opportunities to succeed in the classroom," Harkin said.
The provision was not highlighted in the news release announcing the bill . . .
