Media, Obama Conspire With Abortionists re: Videos

As a third undercover video was released concerning Planned Parenthood involvement in selling aborted baby organs, the nation's largest abortion provider begged mainstream media outlets to embargo the video.  Meanwhile, the Obama administration defended Planned Parenthood and the right of women to kill their unborn children, and is refusing to investigate the allegations, but rather is considering a plea by top Democrat Nancy Pelosi to persecute the whistleblower pro-life organization that exposed Planned Parenthood's butchery.

The media have also largely ignored thousands of protesters across the nation calling for an end to taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood.

Planned Parenthood has enlisted high-profile Washington public relations firm SKDKnickerbocker as it scrambles to deal with the ongoing scandal and release of a third undercover video Tuesday showing a clinic’s staff handling fetal tissue after an abortion.

SKDKnickerbocker is no newbie to working on Planned Parenthood issues. The Democratically aligned firm is run by well-connected operatives, including Anita Dunn and Hilary Rosen. It also worked with the group during the 2012 election cycle, according to SKDKnickerbocker’s website.

The group circulated a memo to reporters and producers late Monday that discouraged them from airing the undercover videos, arguing that they were obtained under false identification and violated patient privacy.

Planned Parenthood also has lobbying firms Capitol Counsel on retainer. Glover Park Group has also previously done work for the group. Planned Parenthood spent nearly $1.3 million on lobbying during the first six months of 2015, according to federal disclosures.

From "Planned Parenthood’s PR Firm Is Asking Reporters Not To Air Undercover Video" by Chuck Ross, Reporter, Daily Caller 7/28/15

Politico itself may have gotten SKDKnickerbocker’s message. As flagged by The Federalist, the outlet sent a tweet of its scoop at around noon on Tuesday noting that the PR firm “circulated a memo” to reporters and news producers. That tweet was later deleted, however. Politico did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

SKDKnickerbocker’s memo mirrors language used by Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards in her numerous attempts to discredit the Center for Medical Progress [CMP, the whistleblower pro-life organization].

“This has been a three-year, well funded by the most militant wing of the anti-abortion movement in this country to try to entrap doctors and, of course, highly doctored videos which show absolutely they — doctors repeatedly said, it’s all been edited out, Planned Parenthood does not at all profit from fetal tissue donation, which is an important element of health care research in this country,” Richards said Sunday on ABC’s “This Week.”

From "Planned Parenthood Threatens TV Stations Demanding They Censor Shocking Undercover Videos" by Sarah Zagorski, LifeNews.com 7/28/15

Here’s a portion of their threatening letter:
When your network decides whether to consider this story newsworthy, or whether to use any of this footage at all, we urge you to keep this in mind: The extremists who entered Planned Parenthood labs under false pretenses violated research protocol, and, worse, violated the privacy of patients involved. Those patients’ privacy should not be further violated by having this footage shared by the media.

The storage and examination processes that CMP used to get this footage are medically necessary. It is necessary medical professionals ensure an abortion is complete so that patients do not get an infection. When tissue is donated for medical research, these steps are also necessary for the donations to be completed. It is also medically necessary that researchers evaluate the laboratory procedures of a medical provider for safety standards and best practices.

Some of the conversations and protocols that occur in medical settings and among professional peers can sound jarring when taken out of context. While this can be difficult to hear or watch, it should not be used as an excuse to defund Planned Parenthood.

CMP gained access to Planned Parenthood facilities under false pretenses and filmed without securing approval from the Planned Parenthood staff being filmed or the patients whose privacy is compromised by this secret videotaping. The material should not be aired.

From "Pelosi urges DOJ probe into group targeting Planned Parenthood" by Sarah Ferris, The Hill 7/23/15

“Let’s have an investigation of those people who were trying to ensnare Planned Parenthood in a controversy that doesn’t exist,” [House Minority Leader Nancy] Pelosi said Thursday in her first public remarks about Planned Parenthood since the first undercover video surfaced last week.

“Planned Parenthood has said that they have done nothing illegal,” she said. “They do not ever charge, which would be illegal, for fetal tissue. They have only defrayed the cost of mailing that to someone, which is not breaking the law.”

Her remarks come one day after White House press secretary Josh Earnest also defended the women’s health provider.

Attorney General Loretta Lynch said Wednesday that she [as the Department of Justice] would review “all information” available before deciding to launch a full investigation.

President Obama’s top healthcare official [Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell] defended federal funding for Planned Parenthood at a hearing on Tuesday as Republicans zeroed in on cutting off its money.

“What I think is important is that our HHS funding is focused on issues of preventative care for women, things like mammograms and cancer prevention screenings,” Burwell told the House Education and the Workforce Committee.

Burwell resisted those calls [from Congress for an investigation], deferring to the Department of Justice (DOJ).

She said that she had not seen the undercover videos but had read about them.

From "Third graphic Planned Parenthood video released" by Jennifer Haberkorn, Politico 7/28/15

A new undercover video released by opponents of Planned Parenthood on Tuesday includes graphic depictions of a technician sorting through the tissue collected after an abortion.

The latest tape also includes footage of a physician in a laboratory talking with an actor posing as a purchaser of tissue samples. “I think the per-item [pricing] works a little better, just because we can see how much we can get out of it,” she said. The group that made the videos, which calls itself the Center for Medical Progress, identified the physician as Dr. Savita Ginde, who is vice president and medical director of Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains in Denver.

The video, the third released by the Center for Medical Progress, includes an interview with a woman who says she used to work at Stem Express, in a Planned Parenthood clinic. “I thought I was going to be just drawing blood, not procuring tissue from aborted fetuses,” Holly O’Donnell, the former procurement technician, said in the video.

Republican lawmakers have called on HHS and the Justice Department to investigate whether Planned Parenthood has broken federal laws preventing the group from profiting on fetal tissue donation.

From "Anti-abortion activists rally across US as third video targets Planned Parenthood" by Lauren Gambino, UK Guardian 7/28/15

Coinciding with the newest video’s release, anti-abortion activists staged “women betrayed” rallies in dozens of cities around the country to protest the organization. At the US Capitol in Washington, protesters were joined by Republican presidential contenders Ben Carson and Rand Paul, along with several other anti-abortion politicians.

During the rally, Paul announced that he had secured a commitment in the Senate to vote on a bill that would defund the organization before Congress recesses. Republicans face an uphill battle to secure the 60 of 100 senate votes needed to approve the bill – there are 54 Republicans in the Senate and only a handful of anti-abortion Democrats.

David Daleiden, the Center for Medical Progress’s head, has said there are several more videos to be released soon, in addition to between 100 and 200 pages of documents from Planned Parenthood and its “proxies”.

. . . the Washington, D.C. protest, which was organized by the Students for Life of America, [included] presidential candidates Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson.

Cruz told the crowd that the recent videos display enough evidence to suggest that Planned Parenthood officials have violated federal law and that the Department of Justice should conduct a criminal investigation into the matter.

Carson argued that the recent videos are another sign that the American society is becoming a more "pro-death" and "evil" society. But with the emergence of the videos, Carson said that the opportunity has arisen for moral individuals to recreate a pro-life culture.

Although Cruz and many other Congress members have called on Attorney General Loretta Lynch to authorize the Department of Justice to conduct a full investigation into Planned Parenthood's organ compensation practices, Cruz implied that such an investigation wouldn't happen because of the partisanship of Obama's Justice Department.

Pelosi Anti-Life Science NOT Catholic: Archbishop

When San Francisco Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi was asked if an unborn baby is a human being at 20 weeks gestation, she said that the mother is the one who matters and anyway that's not a question for politicians to answer.  In response, San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone denounced House Minority Leader Pelosi's refusal to verbalize the “scientific fact that human life begins at conception,” and he further stated that “no Catholic can dissent in good conscience” from the Church teaching on abortion.

“I don’t think it’s up to politicians to do that,” Pelosi said in a briefing Thursday.

“You know it’s really interesting that you would come to these meetings to talk about [abortion],” she told the reporter. “The fact is what we have said. The life and the health of a mother is what is preeminent when a decision is made about a woman’s reproductive health.”

“It isn’t an ideological fight,” she added. “It’s a personal health issue. This is up to women — their conscience, their god their doctor, their health, their fate, survival.”

From "SF Archbishop on Pelosi: No Catholic Can Dissent from Church Teaching on Abortion" by Lauretta Brown, CNSNews.com 1/26/15

At her Jan. 22 briefing Pelosi said she had "great standing" to speak on the issue of abortion, noting that she was a "Catholic and a mom of five" and asserting that it was "true" she knew "more about having babies than the pope."

CNSNews.com asked Archbishop Cordileone about Pelosi’s comments on human life, particularly in light her self-description “as a Catholic and a mom of five."

"It is a scientific fact that human life begins at conception," the archbishop said in a written statement to CNSNews.com. "This has been established in medical science for over 100 years. Catholic moral teaching acknowledges this scientific fact, and has always affirmed the grave moral evil of taking an innocent human life.

“This has been the consistent teaching of the Church from the very beginning, a teaching already discernible in the natural moral law, and so a teaching from which no Catholic can dissent in good conscience,” he said.

The question, and follow-up, were asked by a reporter with CNSNews in reference to the ongoing debate about a bill in Congress that would ban abortion after 20 weeks, except in cases of rape, incest, and a threat to the life of the mother. . . . One recent poll found that 84% of Americans support the bill.

CNSNews.com: "Is an unborn child 20 weeks into pregnancy a human being?"

Pelosi: "You know what, what we're talking about on the floor of the House is something that says politicians should determine what effects the health of a woman, her life, her health, and the rest. I don't think it's up to politicians to do that. And that's why we are very overwhelmingly opposing what is going on on the floor of the House."

Later…

CNSNews.com: "My question is pretty simple. On the abortion issue, I understand your position on the legislation, but even the legislation aside, when it comes to the matter of whether or not an unborn child is a human being at 20 weeks gestation, what is your personal take on it. If it is not a human being, then what do you believe it is?

Pelosi: “You know it is really interesting that you would come to these meetings to talk about it. The fact is is what we have said: The life and the health of the mother is what is preeminent in when a decision is made about a woman’s reproductive health. It isn't an ideological fight, it is a personal health issue."

Archbishop Rebuts Pelosi's Government-run Church

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Democrat from San Francisco and self-proclaimed Catholic, jettisoned her typical separation-of-church-and-state rhetoric and told the Archbishop of San Francisco, Salvatore Cordileone, that he should not participate in this week's March for Marriage in D.C. -- the "venom masquerading as virtue" in her words. In response, Cordileone told Pelosi he WILL join the march because it's in line with Church teaching.

-- From "Nancy Pelosi urges S.F. archbishop to exit marriage march" by Carla Marinucci, The San Francisco Chronicle 6/14/14

Pelosi, who is one of the country's most powerful Catholic politicians, made a passionate appeal to the archbishop in a letter obtained by The Chronicle not to participate in the National Organization for Marriage's June 19 march on the Supreme Court in Washington.

Invoking the [misinterpreted] words of Pope Francis with regard to gays and lesbians, she wrote, "If someone is gay and is searching for the Lord and has good will, then who am I to judge him?"

The San Francisco Democratic leader is the most influential in a parade of public figures who have come forward to protest the San Francisco archbishop's participation in an event that is also backed by the Family Research Council. Critics have called the organizers "hate groups" that are targeting gays and lesbians.

Last week, San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee and Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, along with a host of Bay Area religious leaders, sent a joint letter to Cordileone protesting his plans to attend the march.

Cordileone has nevertheless become a national leader in the religious movement against gay marriage. He heads the Subcommittee for the Promotion and Defense of Marriage for the politically powerful U.S. Conference of Bishops and was instrumental in raising $1.5 million to get Prop. 8, which banned same-sex marriage, on the California ballot in 2008.

From "March for Marriage isn't antigay, Archbishop Cordileone says" San Francisco Chronicle Staff Report 6/16/14

San Francisco's Roman Catholic archbishop told critics who have assailed his decision to speak Thursday at the March for Marriage in Washington, D.C., that the event is not an attack on gays and lesbians.

Cordileone addressed [his rebuttal] letter to Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee and several other politicians and gay rights groups. They called on Cordileone last week not to attend the march, noting that its sponsors include the National Organization for Marriage and the Family Research Council, which they said were among "the national's most virulently anti-LGBT organizations."

March organizers hope to draw thousands of supporters of heterosexual-only marriage to the capital. Cordileone and former GOP presidential candidates Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum are billed as the star speakers.

From "Archbishop Cordileone March for Marriage Letter" by the Most Reverend Salvatore Cordileone 6/16/14

[The principle of] the intrinsic human dignity of all people, irrespective of their stage and condition in life . . . requires us to respect and protect each and every member of the human family, from the precious child in the womb to the frail elderly person nearing death.  It also requires me, as a bishop, to proclaim the truth—the whole truth—about the human person and God’s will for our flourishing.  I must do that in season and out of season, even when truths that it is my duty to uphold and teach are unpopular, including especially the truth about marriage as the conjugal union of husband and wife.  That is what will be doing on June 19th.

The March for Marriage is not “anti-LGBT” (as some have described it); it is not anti-anyone or anti-anything.  Rather, it is a pro-marriage March.  The latter does not imply the former. Rather, it affirms the great good of bringing the two halves of humanity together so that a man and a woman may bond with each other and with any children who come from their union.  This is precisely the vision promoted by Pope Francis, who recently said, “We must reaffirm the right of children to grow up in a family with a father and mother.” Rest assured that if the point of this event were to single out a group of individuals and target them for hatred, I most certainly would not be there.

While I cannot go into all of the details here of your allegations against the sponsors of this event and scheduled speakers, I do know that at least some of what you say is based on misinterpretation or is simply factually incorrect. . . . many conclusions are being drawn about those involved in the March for Marriage based on false impressions.

. . . there is plenty of offensive rhetoric . . . for those who support the conjugal understanding of marriage, [but] the attacks have not stopped at rhetoric.  Simply for taking a stand for marriage as it has been understood in every human society for millennia, people have lost their jobs, lost their livelihoods, and have suffered other types of retribution, including physical violence. . . . such as, most notably, the attempted gunning down of those who work in the offices of the Family Research Council . . .

. . . When all is said and done, then, there is only one thing that I would ask of you more than anything else: before you judge us, get to know us.

Pope Removes Democrat Party Antagonist, Media Crow

In a move that American liberal media outlets tout as Pope Francis' focus toward inclusion, culture warrior Cardinal Raymond L. Burke, the archbishop emeritus of St. Louis, Missouri, has been removed from the Congregation for Bishops.
“One gets the impression, or it’s interpreted this way in the media, that [the Pope] thinks we’re talking too much about abortion, too much about the integrity of marriage as between one man and one woman. But we can never talk enough about that.”

Cardinal Donald Wuerl of Washington was appointed Monday to the Congregation for Bishops. The pope also reconfirmed Cardinal William Levada, the former archbishop of San Francisco and former head of the Vatican's orthodoxy watchdog office.

Some members of the congregation were not reconfirmed. Cardinal Raymond Burke will no longer serve in the office. The former St. Louis archbishop had been a member for several years. Burke retains his position as the head of the Vatican high court, the Apostolic Signatura.

Burke drew attention in the U.S. in 2004 when he said he would deny Communion to Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry, a Roman Catholic who supports abortion rights.

Some observers of the Roman Catholic Church said the move by Pope Francis is yet another example of his effort to tone down highly publicized stances on divisive social issues such as gay marriage, contraception and abortion, on which Burke has made strong remarks.

National Catholic Reporter journalist John Allen said in an email that the “face-value reading” of the changes was that Francis wants more moderate bishops, fewer who are “heavily invested in culture wars.”

In a blog post Monday after the news hit, [Religion News Service reporter David] Gibson described Burke as a “very conservative holdover from the Benedict XVI era and a fan of the kind of high liturgical finery that Pope Francis does not take to, at all.”

From "Pope Replaces Conservative U.S. Cardinal on Influential Vatican Committee" by Jim Yardley And Jason Horowitz, New York Times 12/16/13

The pope’s decision to remove Cardinal Raymond L. Burke from the Congregation for Bishops was taken by church experts to be a signal that Francis is willing to disrupt the Vatican establishment in order to be more inclusive.

“[The Pope] is saying that you don’t need to be a conservative to become a bishop,” said Alberto Melloni, the director of the John XXIII Foundation for Religious Studies in Bologna, Italy, a liberal Catholic research institute. “He wants good bishops, regardless of how conservative or liberal they are.”

Cardinal Burke, who came to the Vatican in 2008 after serving as archbishop of St. Louis, is a favorite of many conservative Catholics in the United States for his upholding of church rites and traditions favored by Pope Benedict XVI. . . .

From "Pro-life leaders shocked by removal of Cardinal Burke from important Vatican post" by John-Henry Westen, LifeSiteNews 12/16/13

Burke has been known for his outspoken championing of the high priority that Popes Benedict and John Paul II gave to the Church’s pro-life and pro-family teachings. He has especially been both praised and criticized for his frequent insistence that persistently pro-abortion Catholic politicians must be denied Holy Communion according to Canon law requirements which Cardinal Ratzinger, before he became pope, directed the US bishops to follow.

John Smeaton, President of the UK Society for the Protection of Unborn Children, told LifeSiteNews, "Cardinal Raymond Burke is a giant man of the Catholic Church and a fearless defender of unborn children, whom Mother Teresa rightly called the poorest of the poor.”

“While other leading churchmen downplay or dismiss the priority to be given to the right to life of babies before birth, billions of whom have been killed in recent years, Cardinal Burke stands strong and says such an attitude is wrong,” Smeaton added. “We need churchmen like Cardinal Burke to become bishops and so it's puzzling and disappointing to see him lost to the Congregation for Bishops which has the responsibility for appointing good bishops and to see other men appointed who don't have Cardinal Burke's clear commitment to the greatest human rights issue of the day and the gravest crisis facing the Catholic Church today.”

From "Vatican Chief Justice: Pro-Abortion Kerry, Pelosi Shouldn't Receive Communion" by Michael W. Chapman, CNSNews.com 12/16/13

In an interview with EWTN’s Raymond Arroyo on Dec. 13, Cardinal Burke explained that it is necessary to protect the Sacrament, the Communion wafer offered at Masses, from “being profaned, being violated by someone receiving unworthily,” someone “who knows that he or she is unworthy and yet presumes to come forward and to take the Holy Eucharist.”

Cardinal Burke, whose official title is Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura, or chief of the Vatican’s highest court, said, “I’ve thought about it because I’ve received very severe criticism, both at the time that I was insisting on applying the discipline and also in my writing and other situations. But I have to say that, I think about it again, the discipline itself, and it’s a consistent discipline from the time of St. Paul, from the very first years of the Church, and it makes perfect sense.”

The cardinal continued, “The Holy Eucharist is the most sacred reality. It is the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Our Lord Jesus Christ. And I simply wouldn’t approach to receive Holy Communion if I was in a state of sin, and neither would I give Holy Communion to someone who I knew was in a state of sin.”

Rep. Nancy Pelosi is a Fraud, Catholic Leaders Say

Nancy Pelosi, the House Democrat from San Francisco, frequently refers to her "Catholic faith" when advocating issues such as the Gay Agenda and abortion.  This month, in a press conference wherein she denounced the House Republicans' passage of a bill limiting abortion after 20 weeks gestation, she said that advocacy for late-term abortion is "sacred ground" for her "as a practicing and respectful Catholic."

Catholic leaders have publicly responded to Rep. Pelosi, saying that the House's top Democrat is making a "mockery of the Catholic faith."

"Public servants are supposed to be able to tell the difference between serving the public and killing the public. Apparently, you can't. . . . Whatever Catholic faith you claim to respect and practice, it is not the faith that the Catholic Church teaches."

Like many Catholic Democrats, Pelosi supports abortion rights. She is frequently challenged by anti-abortion rights groups and conservative reporters for this view.

The latest tangle came during a press conference on a GOP bill to ban late-term abortions across the country. That measure, from Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.), passed the House on Tuesday.

Catholic leaders have denied or threatened to deny communion to several Catholic politicians who support abortion rights, including Vice President Biden, Secretary of State John Kerry and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.

From "Pelosi Slaps Down Reporters Asking Questions on Abortion" by John Parkinson, ABC News 6/13/13

Pelosi began her news conference today by criticizing a Republican-sponsored bill to ban abortions after 20 weeks without exceptions for rape and incest. The bill, H.R. 1797, the “Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act” . . .

“They passed legislation that was disrespectful to the rights, health and safety of American women,” Pelosi, D-Calif., said. “All the people who voted for the bill were men. Disrespectful.”

When she opened the newser up to questions, John McCormack, a reporter with the Weekly Standard, challenged Pelosi to explain the moral difference between murdering a live-born infant, exemplified by the horrors of a recently convicted Philadelphia [abortionist] doctor, Kermit Gosnell, and fetuses aborted in the womb during the final four months of pregnancy.

From "Nancy Pelosi Calls Late-Term Abortions 'Sacred Ground,' Triggering Mass Response From Advocates And Opponents Alike" by Samantha Olson, Medical Daily 6/14/13

. . . McCormack created tension when he asked, "What is the moral difference between what Dr. Gosnell did to a baby born alive at 23 weeks and aborting her moments before birth?," referring to the abortions and infanticides performed by Kermit Gosnell, a Philadelphia [abortionist] doctor found guilty last month of first-degree murder for cutting the spinal cords of three babies born alive in an abortion clinic, which led to their eventual death.

Pelosi, a mother of five, eventually dismissed the reporter because of his obvious agenda to stir unwarranted provocative conversation, but not before saying, "As a practicing and respectful Catholic, this is sacred ground to me when we talk about this," referring to Gosnell. "This shouldn't have anything to do with politics and that's where you're taking it and I'm not going there."

. . . Pelosi right away accused McCormack of enjoying or even "savoring" asking the question of her, prompting laughter from some other reporters. She then offered, "What was done in Philadelphia was reprehensible and everybody condemned it. For them to decide to disrespect a judgment a woman makes about her reproductive health is reprehensible."

But McCormack persisted, even as Pelosi was saying "next question," and asked, "What's the moral difference, then, between 26 weeks elective abortion and killing that same infant born alive?"

Pelosi turned to him again, saying, "This is not the issue."

. . . when a New York Times reporter at the same news conference said he wanted to return to the topic of abortion, Pelosi shut him down, saying, "I'm not going to."

"Abortion is not sacred ground; it is sacrilegious ground. To imagine God giving the slightest approval to an act that dismembers a child he created is offensive to both faith and reason," he wrote. "And to say that a question about the difference between legal and medical procedure and murder should not 'have anything to do with politics' reveals a profound failure to understand your own polical responsibilities, which start with the duty to secure the God-given right to life of every citizen."

Frank Pavone, founder of Priests for Life, a U.S.-based Catholic anti-abortion organization.

Pope Francis, when he was archbishop of Buenos Aires in 2007, opposed giving communion to politicians who supported abortion rights.

During a vice presidential debate last year, Biden said he personally accepted the church's teaching that life begins at conception and as a personal matter he opposes abortion. But he added that he would not impose his belief on others and believes every women should have the right to make that choice.

In a torrent of comments on the web, Catholics and others began a fiery debate on the issue and related themes.

Pope Francis has said he is clearly against the practice, particularly by pro-choice politicians.

"We must adhere to ‘eucharistic coherence’, that is, be conscious that they cannot receive holy communion and at the same time act with deeds or words against the commandments, particularly when abortion, euthanasia, and other grave crimes against life and family are encouraged," he wrote in 2007. "This responsibility applies particularly to legislators, governors, and health professionals."

A spokeswoman for Biden declined to comment. A spokesman for Pelosi did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

Obama Creates Homosexual Path to Citizenship

President Obama, through Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, has proclaimed illegal aliens who demonstrate a vaguely-defined homosexual partnership with U.S. citizens be deemed so-called family members and granted the right to live in the U.S. indefinitely.
"Our nation is served when loving families are kept together.  We need to ... relegate DOMA to the dustbin of history."

The Obama administration has directed immigration officials to recognize same-sex partners as family members in deportation cases, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said on Friday.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano told Pelosi in a letter that she had ordered U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to notify its field offices "that the interpretation of the phrase 'family relationships' includes long-term, same-sex partners."

Immigration officials last year said they would consider same-sex partnerships as family relations in deciding whether to deport undocumented immigrants.

But 83 members of Congress led by Pelosi and Jerrold Nadler of New York criticized the government for unevenly applying the directive, and they pressed for written guidelines.

From "Gay couples may get reprieve in deportation cases" by The Associated Press 9/29/12

"I have directed ICE to disseminate written guidance to the field that the interpretation of the phrase 'family relationships' includes long-term, same-sex partners," Napolitano wrote, adding that the decision to grant reprieves still would be considered on a case-by-case basis.

The instructions do not mean that foreigners who are married to Americans of the same sex will be eligible for green cards or citizenship, as are immigrants with opposite sex spouses. The Obama administration is continuing to enforce a 1996 law [DOMA] that prohibits the government from recognizing same-sex marriages, even as it opposes it in court and takes gay relationships into account when evaluating deportation cases.

Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies, a Washington group that advocates tighter immigration policies, said that even though the administration says it is complying with the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act [DOMA] by not allowing citizens to sponsor same-sex spouses for green cards, the pending guidance for ICE officials to review the family ties of same-sex couples suggests otherwise.

"It's a camel's nose under the tent," Krikorian said. "If you get same-sex couples approved in terms of immigration, you can use that as an incremental approach to getting changes in other areas, such as in tax policy."

ObamaCare a BFD: White House Tweets F-bomb Profanity

In celebration of the Supreme Court decision favoring ObamaCare, President Obama's personal twitter account harkened back to VP Joe Biden's characterization of ObamaCare as "a big f*cking deal" when the legislation became law in March 2010.

For background, read Supreme Court OKs Taxes for Abortion: ObamaCare

-- From "Elated Democrats curse it up to celebrate healthcare ruling" by Seema Mehta, Los Angeles Times 6/29/12

After the ruling, Obama's campaign on Thursday tweeted "Still a BFD," and a link to its website for a $30 T-shirt that says "Health Reform Still a BFD." The acronym stands for the colorful phrase Vice President Joe Biden said to Obama -- loud enough to be caught by a microphone -- before the president signed the healthcare legislation.

Obama campaign manager Jim Messina sent supporters an email saying that although Thursday had been a good day, work remained to be done. The subject line: "Let's win the damn election."

A beaming House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said Thursday, "The politics be damned. This is about what we came to do."

And, in a message that Politico’s Playbook called the “tweet of the year,” Democratic National Committee official Patrick Gaspard, immediately after the decision was announced, tweeted, "it’s constitutional. Bitches."

President Obama’s campaign wants you to know it thinks the Supreme Court’s landmark health care decision is a BFD: a big f---ing deal, that is.

The President’s campaign sent an unsigned tweet late Thursday night that simply read: “Still a BFD.” The tweet included a link to the campaign’s online merchandise store, where it is now offering a T-shirt that proclaims in bold lettering: “Health Reform Still a BFD.”

The cheeky abbreviation refers to Vice President Joe Biden’s hot-mic moment in 2010 when Obama signed health reform into law. As Biden gave Obama a congratulatory hug at the podium, he was overheard telling him: “This is a big f---ing deal.”

No Freedom of Religion for Chaplains, Say Obama & Dems

President Obama says he will veto the defense authorization bill passed in the House because of a freedom of conscience provision for military chaplains to ensure, among other things, that they are not discriminated against for not performing same-sex "marriage" ceremonies. Rep. Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco calls the provision, advocated by the Chaplain Alliance For Religious Liberty, "a fraud."
"Liberals may have successfully ended 'don't ask, don't tell,' but they should not be allowed to force members of our military to give up their religious beliefs. That is simply unacceptable and unconstitutional."

-- From "U.S. House Defies Obama With $554 Billion Defense Bill" by Roxana Tiron, Bloomberg 5/18/12

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a $554 billion defense bill that rejects Pentagon proposals to curtail or slow weapons programs, bans same-sex marriages on military bases and backs indefinite detention without trial of terrorism suspects.

The Republican-controlled House today passed on a vote of 299-120 the defense authorization measure setting spending targets and policy for the fiscal year that starts Oct. 1.

From "House Republicans add gay marriage measure to defense bill" by Ian Duncan and Lisa Mascaro, Los Angeles Times, Washington Bureau 5/19/12

The annual National Defense Authorization Act, approved 299 to 120 on Friday, is a traditionally bipartisan effort that can prove difficult for lawmakers to oppose. The bill includes a 1.7% annual pay raise for the troops but also is loaded with politically charged extras.

The bill addresses gay marriage with two provisions. One would ban performing gay marriages on any facility owned by the military. Another would protect military chaplains from punishment if they declined to marry a gay couple.

The Department of Defense had opened the door to gay weddings on bases in a memo last September after Congress repealed the "don't ask, don't tell" policy, which barred gays from openly serving in the military. The policy change said chaplains were allowed to perform same-sex marriages but noted they could not be required to. It is not clear whether any ceremonies have yet been performed in military chapels.

The Pentagon memos noted that the ceremonies must not be prohibited by "applicable state and local law."

[Ron Crews, executive director of the Chaplain Alliance,] is one of 19 individuals to write a letter to the House Armed Services Committee urging lawmakers to protect the religious liberties of chaplains and service members.

“Until Congress acts decisively, efforts to silence the voices of our military chaplains of all faiths and backgrounds will likely continue well into the future,” the letter read. “It is time that Congress secures the rights of all chaplains, once and for all, instead of allowing those that do not subscribe to the orthodoxy of the day to be unconstitutionally silenced.”

Crews said they know of dozens of instances where military personnel have come under fire. He said one chaplain was told that if he could not support DADT he should resign his commission.

“Some of these chaplains have in fact had their careers impacted,” he told Fox News. “They’ve been punished. Right now, if you are opposed to this policy you’re not seen as a team player.

Former Navy Chaplain James Klingenschmitt was lobbying all 26 members of the Senate Armed Services Committee Friday on Capitol Hill and took exception to the minority leader's comments.

"I disagree with Rep. Pelosi. There are dozens of active duty chaplains who have been pressured to not speak against homosexuality," Klingenschmitt told The Christian Post. From "White House 'Strongly Objects' to Legislation Protecting Military Chaplains from Doing Same-Sex Weddings or Being Forced to Act Against Conscience" by Patrick Goodenough, CNSNews.com 5/16/12

The Obama administration “strongly objects” to provisions in a House defense authorization bill that would prohibit the use of military property for same-sex “marriage or marriage-like” ceremonies, and protect military chaplains from negative repercussions for refusing to act against their consciences, as, for example, in being ordered to perform a same-sex marriage ceremony.

In a policy statement released Wednesday, the White House Office of Management and Budget outlined numerous objections to aspects of the fiscal year 2013 National Defense Authorization Bill (H.R. 4310).

The memo said the two [religious liberty] provisions “adopt unnecessary and ill-advised policies that would inhibit the ability of same-sex couples to marry or enter a recognized relationship under State law.”

The OMB complained that, “in its overbroad terms,” section 536 “is potentially harmful to good order and discipline.”

Battles over abortion, and now marriage, will continue to be the baseline of any appeal to the religiously active Catholic voter. But this year, candidates will discover Catholics are viscerally troubled by three additional issues—religious liberty, budget cuts, and immigration reform.

The most troublesome of these issues for Democrats is the increased volume of Catholic complaints over religious liberty.

The [ObamaCare] bill, as it turns out, is only the tip of the iceberg in this administration’s attack on religious liberty.

. . . In kowtowing to pressure from abortion activists, the Democrats have created a significant problem for themselves in 2012.

From "Health, abortion issues split Obama administration and Catholic groups" by Jerry Markon, Washington Post 10/31/11

A contentious battle between Catholic groups and the Obama administration has flared in recent days, fueled by the new health-care law and ongoing divisions over access to abortion and birth control.

The latest dispute centers on a decision by the Department of Health and Human Services in late September to end funding to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops to help victims of human trafficking, or modern-day slavery. The church group had overseen nationwide services to victims since 2006 but was denied a new grant in favor of three other groups.

The bishops organization, in line with the church’s teachings, had refused to refer trafficking victims for contraceptives or abortion. The American Civil Liberties Union sued, and HHS officials said they made a policy decision to award the grants to agencies that would refer women for those services.

The bishops conference is threatening legal action and accusing the administration of anti-Catholic bias, which HHS officials deny.

From "Rep. Smith: 'Obama Adminstration's Bias Against Catholics Is an Affront to Religious Freedom'" by Penny Starr, CNSNews.com 12/1/11

The answer is discrimination, Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.) told the House Oversight and Government Affairs Committee: “If you are a Catholic or other faith-based NGO, or a secular organization of conscience, there is now clear proof that your grant application will not be considered...under a fair, impartial, and totally transparent process by the Obama administration. The Obama adminstration's bias against Catholics is an affront to religious freedom and a threat to all people."

Smith, who authored the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000, is furious:

“In what can only be described as an unconscionable abuse of power, the Obama administration has engaged in what amounts to bid rigging: denying taxpayer funds to a demonstrably superior organization -- the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) -- with an exemplary ten-year track record of performance that scored significantly higher in independent HHS reviews than two of the three NGOs (nongovernmental organizations) that got the grant.”

“The Obama administration’s discriminatory practice of funding NGOs [non-governmental organizations] that provide or refer for abortions even when they fail to win a competitive process is not only unjust, unethical and in violation of conscience laws, but it severely undermines public -- and congressional -- confidence and support for what is an otherwise laudable program,” said Smith.

From "Pelosi Dismisses Catholic Bishops as ‘Lobbyists’—For Opposing Obamacare Reg Forcing Catholics to Act Against Faith" by Edwin Mora, CNSNews.com 12/1/11

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif) on Thursday described America’s Roman Catholic bishops as “lobbyists in Washington, D.C.” in their efforts to persuade the Department of Health and Human Service to rescind a proposed regulation under the new health-care law that would force Catholics to act against the teachings of their church by compelling them to purchase health-care plans that cover sterilizations and all-FDA approved contraceptives, including abortifacients.

“. . . as a mother of five children in six years, as a devout Catholic, I have great respect for our bishops when they are my pastor. As lobbyists in Washington D.C., we have some areas of disagreement.”

The regulation HHS has proposed includes a “religious exemption” that does not apply to individuals who, under Obamacare, will be mandated to buy health insurance. . . .

As drawn, the exemption from the sterilization-and-contraception mandate would not apply to Catholic individuals, Catholic hospitals, Catholic universities and Catholic charitable organizations.

From "Contraceptive rule a pill for Obama" by J. Lester Feder, Politico 12/7/11

A new rule issued under his health care law requires virtually all insurance plans to cover contraceptives, and Obama is now personally involved in a decision about how broad an exemption for religious employers should be.

HHS exempted a narrow set of religious employers from this requirement — essentially allowing churches to deny contraception coverage to their employees, but not organizations like religiously affiliated universities or hospitals.

Anna Franzonello, staff counsel with Americans United for Life, said that although Obama has said he favors a "robust" conscience clause, "what this actually shows is that robust to him means a fig leaf of protection." The group maintains that emergency contraceptives that would be covered by this mandate are a form of abortion.

From "Obama turns his back on Catholics" by Michael Gerson, Washington Post 11/14/11

Obama’s [sudden] Catholic outreach is being revealed as a transparent ploy a year before he faces reelection. A portion of the Democratic coalition — including civil libertarians and pro-choice activists — has decided to attack and marginalize Catholic leaders and institutions. And HHS is actively siding against Catholic organizations.

“We are in a war,” Sebelius told a recent pro-choice meeting. Opponents of the administration, she said, are trying to “roll back the last 50 years in progress women have made in comprehensive health care in America.” This is no longer the “presumption of good faith.” It has all the hallmarks of a vendetta.

Obama-CHILD-Care is Next, Says Nancy Pelosi

Last week, the California congresswoman hit five cities in five days, barnstorming for money to try to win the 25 more seats it would take to regain control [of the House]. And if that happens — or when, according to her — at the top of her to-do list, she says, will be “doing for child care what we did for health-care reform” — pushing comprehensive change.

. . . Under fire for health-care legislation that conservatives consider a big-government power grab, she’s happy to promise more of the same.

Of the need for child-care legislation, she says, “I could never get a babysitter — have five kids in six years and no one wants to come to your house. . . . And everywhere I go, women say the same thing” about how hard it is to find the kind of reliable care that would make their family lives calmer and work lives more productive. When it comes to “unleashing women” in a way that would boost the economy, she says, “this is a missing link.”

Congress did pass such a bill, in 1971, but President Richard M. Nixon vetoed it because he thought it would undermine families and force them to put children in government-run centers.

Ending Abortion Fed Funding is Deadly Says Pelosi

The Republican House will pass the Protect Life Act to negate the ObamaCare tax subsidies for abortion insurance coverage, and also ensure right of conscience for health-care workers.

Pelosi and other Democrats dismissed the bill as a “waste of time” and criticized House GOP leadership for bringing up a bill that isn’t directly related to jobs and the economy – particularly since the abortion legislation has a dim chance in the Democratically-controlled Senate.

Earlier this week, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) defended putting the bill on the floor, saying it was part of the House GOP’s “Pledge to America” and they were following through on their promise to voters.

From "House takes up measure to restrict abortions" by Kathleen Hennessey, Los Angeles Times 10/13/11

The House is slated to vote on the Protect Life Act, which would amend the new healthcare law to prevent federal subsidies from being used to pay for any health insurance plan that covers abortion. The bill also offers legal protection for hospitals that refuse to perform abortions.

The measure is part of a continued effort to distance the federal government and its dollars from healthcare providers that perform the procedure. Its provisions are similar to legislation already passed by the House in May. The Senate blocked the bill and is expected to do the same to this legislation.

Advocates argue Republicans are trying to codify and expand on the long-standing policy known as the Hyde Amendment, which bars the use of federal money in Medicaid and other government programs for abortion -- except in cases of rape, incest or a danger to the life of the woman.

From "House Approves Bill to Stop Abortion Funding in Obamacare" by Steven Ertelt, LifeNews.com 10/13/11

H.R. 358, Protect Life Act, makes it clear that no funds authorized or appropriated by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), including tax credits and cost-sharing reductions, may be used to pay for abortion or abortion coverage. It specifies that individual people or state or local governments must purchase a separate elective abortion rider or insurance coverage that includes elective abortion but only as long as that is done with private funds and not monies authorized by Obamacare.

The bill also specifies that insurance issuers may offer health plans that include elective abortion and may offer separate elective abortion riders, so long as they ensure PPACA funds are not used for premiums or administrative costs. The bill also clarifies that issuers who offer elective abortion coverage must also offer a qualified health benefits plan that is identical except that it does not cover elective abortion.

The pro-life measure also ensures that state laws “protecting conscience rights, restricting or prohibiting abortion or coverage or funding of abortion, or establishing procedural requirements on abortion” are not abrogated by Obamacare. It also makes it so any state or local governments receiving funding under Obamacare may not subject any health care entity to discrimination or require any health plan to subject any entity to discrimination on the basis that it refuses to undergo abortion training, refuses to require abortion training, refuses to perform or pay for abortions, or refuses to provide abortion referrals.

Should Obama veto the bill, he would violate his own promise to support a ban on abortion funding under Obamacare.
