Christian Arrested for Casual Conversation about God in Mall

California youth pastor Matthew Snatchko witnessed his faith to a few accepting women, but when a store employee overheard the conversation, he was hauled off to jail.

"He was put in handcuffs and hauled down to the mall’s security station and later booked at the local jail," said Snatchko’s attorney Matthew McReynolds of the Pacific Justice Institute, a legal defense organization specializing in the defense of religious freedom.

Snatchko was later released and never charged with a crime, but he and the Justice Institute decided to challenge the constitutionality of Roseville Galleria's restrictions on conversations about topics such as religion and politics.

"He wanted to make sure that neither he nor anybody else got harassed again at this mall or the 55 other malls this company owns throughout the United States," said McReynolds.

In 2008, a California superior court ruled that the mall's ban on controversial conversations with strangers didn’t violate freedom of speech.

But late last month Snatchko and the Justice Institute appealed to the state’s 3rd Appellate District in Sacramento. All parties in the case are now waiting for the court to schedule a date for oral arguments or issue a ruling.

Pro-family = Anti-poverty: Colorado State Rep.

People who don't want to live in poverty should stop having children when they're not married, Rep. Spencer Swalm, R-Centennial, argued Monday during a floor debate on a bill to ease tax burdens on low-income families.

"Don't have kids out of wedlock," said Swalm from the House floor. "If you're married, if at all possible, try to stay married. Those are ways to lift families out of poverty."

In an interview afterward, Swalm pointed out that "intact families do better than dysfunctional or broken families" but said he was not advocating people stay in abusive marriages.

"Those children are almost guaranteed to be in poverty. You don't want kids in poverty? Don't have kids out of wedlock," Swalm said. "Better yet, get a high school degree. That doesn't cost a dime."

. . . out of all children living in single-parent homes, more than a third lived in poverty. Only 8.6 percent of children in married-couple families lived in poverty, according to the survey.

Abortion Insurance Regulated in yet Another State: Kansas

Kansas insurance providers would be prohibited from covering elective abortions — unless you want to pay extra — under legislation pending in the Legislature.
Missouri, Oklahoma and four states have similar laws on the books.

The bill wouldn’t apply to abortions performed to save the life of a woman, or to pregnancies resulting from rape or incest, as long as a police report was filed.

Supporters of applying the restriction to all health plans in Kansas maintain that policyholders shouldn’t have to pay for a procedure they may find immoral, or subsidize abortions for other women through their premiums.

Rep. Virgil Peck, a Tyro Republican, said the measure might please both sides.

“It’s pro-life in the fact that citizens who find abortion objectionable should be happy with it,” Peck argued. “Pro-choice individuals can make the choice” to get the extra coverage.

The bill, HB 2564, is awaiting a vote in the House Insurance Committee.

Planned Parenthood Busted by Video Sting in Alabama

An Alabama abortion clinic is on probation after an undercover video caught a staffer saying the clinic sometimes "bends the rules" in helping a minor get an abortion without parental consent [and] for failure to report suspected child sex abuse.

In the video, created by anti-abortion group "Live Action," the organization's president, Lila Rose, posed as a 14-year-old girl impregnated by her 31-year-old boyfriend. She told employees at the Birmingham Planned Parenthood that she needed to have a secret abortion.

Alabama law requires minors to have signed consent from a parent or legal guardian to have an abortion.

But state health officials found that nine minors, ages 13-15, had received abortions at the Birmingham Planned Parenthood without proper verification of consent since November 2008.

They also cited problems with the reporting of suspected sexual abuse. One of the 13-year-olds who received an abortion said she starting having sex at age 12. She was back at the clinic for another abortion four months later.

The action by the Alabama Department of Health was based on a 38-page report that found that the business's own records revealed it provided an abortion to a 15-year-old although the "mother" giving consent did not have the same last name or address and provided an expired driver's license as ID.

Records for other patients, mostly ages 13 and 14, also revealed the business failed to document properly the identification of those giving parental permission under the state law for the abortions.

In fact, in all nine cases examined by the state involving minor patients, Planned Parenthood, the nation's largest abortion provider, "failed to obtain parental consent … in a manner that complies with state legal requirements."

Worse yet was the conclusion that "neither the registered nurse, the medical doctor, nor any other center staff reported the suspected abuse or neglect [of a 13 year-old child] to the authorities as required by law."

Sex between an adult and a 14-year-old is a felony in Alabama. The pro-life organization said the Birmingham clinic was the seventh Planned Parenthood clinic implicated in a multi-state scandal over the suppression of statutory rape evidence.

Planned Parenthood did not respond to a request from WND for comment.

"The Health Department report documents the same malpractice that we have found in state after state," [Lila] Rose said. "Sexually abused minors are being neglected by Planned Parenthood, which puts its own 'abortion-first mentality' before child protection.

"These are outrageous violations of state law and the Alabama Health Department should revoke the Birmingham Planned Parenthood clinic license. Alabama legislators must also ensure that no tax money is funding Planned Parenthood's illicit activities," she said.

A spokesman with the Jefferson County sheriff's office said, "Anyone who sees [the video] should be disturbed by it."

The state report reveals that Planned Parenthood staffers refused to be interviewed or said they would be interviewed only with legal counsel present.

When investigators were looking into the case, they found other roadblocks.

"During an interview with the center's interim CEO … she was asked, 'What is the official center policy on underage abortions done here?' She responded, 'I would need to have it in front of me before I speak to that.' She was provided with the two documents …. She excused herself and returned saying, 'I need to talk to my lawyer before I can continue,'" the report said.

But as the only candidate who lives south of I-80, he used his name recognition in central and southern Illinois to take the lead. While the final ballots are still being counted, he is poised to win his party's nomination.

. . . The state legislator has denied that humans are contributing to global warming. He only supports abortion in cases where the mother's life is at stake, not in instances of rape or incest. He opposes gay rights across the board, even voting against a 2005 state law banning discrimination against gays and lesbians in matters of housing and employment. He opposes any use of taxpayer funds for embryonic stem cell research. And he's supported anti-immigrant legislation that would bar the undocumented from receiving health care, homeownership assistance, college aid, and more.

Brady didn't generate much support from the nascent Tea Party movement in Illinois, even though his resume reads like a Tea Party manifesto. He's certainly going to need to find innovative ways to reach out to independent voters this fall.

A homosexual congressman from Colorado has proposed a law critics say would give controversial federal school safety czar Kevin Jennings – a longtime homosexual-rights advocate – almost unlimited authority to mandate indoctrination in public schools at taxpayer expense.

Polis' proposal would provide special protections for students who claim they are discriminated against because of their "perceived sexual orientation." The bill would call down the wrath of the federal government on offenders by classifying "actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity" alongside race, color, sex, disability or national origin as factors on which protections are based.

In a statement announcing his proposal, H.R. 4530, Polis said, "Every student has the right to an education free from harassment and violence. This bill will protect the individual freedoms of our students and enshrine the values of equality and opportunity in our classrooms."

But it actually won't, according to an analysis by Harvey. Instead, she said it will allow Jennings a virtual open door to set up whatever pro-homosexual programs he would choose.

A younger and more liberal corps of commanders and soldiers has given rise to bubbles of tolerance in today's military, an institution that soldiers describe as still largely unwelcoming and wary of gays, according to interviews with more than a dozen enlisted troops and officers, both gay and straight.

Underground gay communities have emerged at bases across the United States and even in war zones. In Iraq, one e-mail group maintained by gay troops includes a database where soldiers post their instant-messaging screen names and the base where they're stationed. Dozens have profiles on gay dating sites, some posing in uniform.

In recent years, service members and researchers say, a growing number of gay troops have disclosed their sexual orientation to supervisors and comrades. They say they are buoyed by a sense that wartime commanders are increasingly reluctant to lose skilled troops to a ban many now view as archaic.

Other officers disagree. They argue that lifting the ban could demoralize an institution strained by two ongoing wars and the toll of nearly a decade of combat. Openly gay soldiers could weaken unit cohesion and present logistical and moral dilemmas for commanders, supporters of the ban said.

"Due to the nature of what soldiers do, we discriminate against the too young, the too old, the infirm, the overweight, the physically unfit and women," said a senior commander who has served in Iraq, speaking on the condition of anonymity to argue against the administration's position. "Discrimination against homosexuals is no different."

Adjusting to new policies to accommodate openly gay soldiers could become a distraction for commanders, he said.

In the eight years before the United States went to war in Afghanistan, at least 7,989 service members were discharged because of the ban. That number dropped noticeably after the U.S.-led intervention in 2002; since then, 5,400 service members have been discharged for being gay.

Aborted Fetus Photos Impact Local Residents in Massachusetts

[Pro-lifers] said they plan to be outside 111 Harvard St. [in Brookline Village] every day now that Women’s Health Services, a clinic that provides abortions, has relocated there after 17 years in Chestnut Hill.

"We’re not going to go away," said Rita Russo of Norwood, who stood outside the clinic with a poster of Jesus draped around her neck yesterday. "It would be invisible if we weren’t here. We don’t want it to be invisible."

The presence of the protesters has already riled neighbors, who say the clinic should not be located in the area because a preschool, elementary school, homes, and small businesses are nearby.

Brookline’s Zoning Board of Appeals approved the clinic’s move last summer, but by then residents said protesters had already been on Harvard Street holding signs depicting a severed fetus head, and one protester had dressed in a Grim Reaper costume.

As a result, several of the neighbors, including businesses such as Little Corner Schoolhouse and Williams Piano, have filed a suit against the town for allowing the clinic to open.

The clinic is one of only a dozen left in the state that openly advertises it will perform abortions, said Andrea Miller, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts.

That number is down from 17 in 2002, according to a NARAL study released last fall, and the drop is indicative of a nationwide decline in access to clinics that provide abortions, Miller said.

Businesses nearby on Harvard Street felt the presence of the protesters yesterday, as well.

Several demonstrators ended up standing in front of Williams Piano on Harvard Street yesterday because a state-mandated buffer zone requires protesters to stand at least 35 feet away from entrances to abortion clinics.

The report demands that children 10 and older be given a "comprehensive sexuality education" by governments, aid organizations and other groups, and that young people should be seen as "sexual beings."

"Young people have the right to be informed about sexuality and to have access to contraceptives and other services," Bert Koenders, the Netherlands Minister for Development Cooperation, wrote in the foreword to the report. It was his organization that helped fund the report.

Much like a U.N. report released last August that advocated teaching masturbation to children as young as 5, "Stand and Deliver" has set off a wave of protest among religious and conservative groups.

Michelle Turner, president of the Maryland-based Citizens for a Responsible Curriculum, said Planned Parenthood was simply trying to eliminate parental say.

"What are they trying to do? They are trying to eliminate the role of mom and dad in the family," Turner said. "For Planned Parenthood to decide that governments, private organizations and religious organizations should make decisions about kids' sexuality is just going too far."

The report raised the ire of many religious traditionalists who say it misses the bigger picture.

“Effective sex education deals with the whole person, not as objects driven uncontrollably by a sex drive,” Concerned Women for America President Wendy Wright told Newsmax. “The release of Planned Parenthood's 'report' comes at a bad time for the group, with a ground-breaking study released last week showing that teaching abstinence is more effective in helping kids make right choices.”

Wright said Planned Parenthood is an organization of “sex-obsessed adults” with a nefarious ulterior motive for luring children to experiment with sex.

Court Favors Sexual Mutilation as Medical Treatment

The U.S. Tax Court ruled . . . a Massachusetts woman should be allowed to deduct the costs of her sex-change operation, a decision that could have broad implications for transgender people.

Rhiannon O'Donnabhain (oh-DON'-oh-vin), who was born a man, sued the Internal Revenue Service after the agency rejected a $5,000 deduction for approximately $25,000 in medical expenses associated with the sex-change surgery.

The IRS said the surgery was cosmetic and not medically necessary.

In its decision Tuesday, the tax court said the IRS position was "at best a superficial characterization of the circumstances" that is "thoroughly rebutted by the medical evidence."

The legal group Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders, which represented O'Donnabhain, said the ruling could potentially affect thousands of people a year in the U.S. who undergo similar operations.

O'Donnabhain's lawyers argued that because gender-identity disorder is a recognized mental disorder that is generally treated with hormones and surgery, the costs are legitimate medical deductions.

The tax court agreed.

"The evidence amply supports the conclusions that petitioner suffered from severe GID, that GID is a well-recognized and serious mental disorder, and that hormone therapy and sex reassignment surgery are considered appropriate and effective treatments for GID by psychiatrists and other mental health professionals who are knowledgeable concerning the condition," the court said in its ruling.

An estimated 1,600 to 2,000 people a year undergo sex-change surgery in the United States, according to the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association.

Even if such surgery "is medically indicated ... it is an otherwise cosmetic procedure that does not 'treat' the mental disease," Gustafson wrote.

Gill says Lopez's teaching methods violate California laws protecting gays from discrimination and prohibiting religious indoctrination at public schools.

Lopez is one of several Fresno City College instructors who teach the Health Science I course, which the college catalog describes as a survey of "contemporary science concepts and medical information designed to promote health." Topics covered in the course include sexuality, nutrition, substance abuse, physical fitness and heredity.

Jacqueline Mahaffey, 24, who had Lopez as a teacher last semester, said his personal beliefs became apparent on the first day of class when he made a point of contradicting their textbook, which listed cancer as the leading cause of death. Lopez told the class that abortions killed more people than cancer.

During the second week, Lopez allegedly gave the students a genetics assignment that involved studying the Bible to research Jesus Christ's biological makeup. He also told students that "evolution is a dead theory" and invited them to visit him in his office "if you want to know about your Creator."

Mahaffey said she and another student filed complaints with Lopez's dean about halfway through the semester following a lecture in which he said that sexual behavior involving less than 5 percent of the population should be classified as a mental disorder and that homosexuality "degrades" society.

Feds to Train Kids in Cyberspace on HIV Avoidance

[A] division of the National Institutes of Health, is giving . . . the Yale School of Medicine, $3.9 million over five years to develop a video game to teach “sex, drug and alcohol negotiation and refusal skills" to children 9-14 years of age.

After they have played the game for four weeks, the children in the study will be periodically surveyed to see if they are refraining from activity—including “vaginal or anal intercourse”—that puts them at risk of HIV infection.

“Research demonstrates that adolescents who acquire new knowledge, skills and attitudes in a video game, and practice these skills in the game, are more likely to behave similarly in real life,” says the abstract. “Therefore, the goal of this application is to adapt existing software to develop and refine an interactive video game designed to decrease HIV risk by teaching minority adolescents sex, drug and alcohol negotiation and refusal skills.”

Slip it into a computer and download the entire New Testament in one of more than 400 languages, complete with dramatic pauses, sound effects and background music. Organizers say they're not snubbing the Old Testament; the audio is not yet available in all those languages.

In Alpharetta, Ga., the North American Mission Board, which is tied to the Southern Baptist Convention, recently launched an initiative to share the Gospel with everyone in North America, but they're taking 10 years to do it and it's not CD-centric.

Because the U.S. and many Texas cities are now so global . . . local Christians must think and act more like missionaries who are going into a different culture. The CD is a good start, but relationships are still the key.

White House Justice Argues Equality for ALL Genders

The Obama administration will expand the Gay Agenda by arguing in a court case that the 1972 Title IX legislation, which has since changed virtually every aspect of American public schools, covers discrimination against students suffering from gender confusion, including cross-dressing and transgenderism, or claiming any sexually deviant behavior.

Title IX preamble: “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subject to discrimination under any educational programs or activity receiving federal financial assistance.”

The bullying by classmates and taunts of "homo" only got worse after Jacob began dyeing his hair and wearing eyeliner in eighth grade.

The response by the Mohawk Central School District, according to a federal lawsuit, was to do "virtually nothing."

The idea of a lawsuit came from someone at a support group Jacob attended, and the NYCLU sued in August. The Department of Justice asked to intervene last month, noting the suit's claims that Jacob was denied equal protections guaranteed in the Constitution and under Title IX, the antidiscrimination law affecting schools that receive federal funding.

Justice officials say it's the first time since 2000 that they have argued that Title IX, the antidiscrimination law affecting schools that receive federal funding, covers sex discrimination based on gender stereotypes - such as when a boy does not act or look stereotypically male.

Mohawk School Superintendent Joyce Caputo said the district denies allegations in the lawsuit, but she stressed they are working with the NYCLU and the Justice Department to settle the suit in a way that benefits everyone.

The lawsuit claims the principal and other district officials did not follow their own anti-harassment policies. Teachers blocked him from going to a "safe room" set up for him. One teacher told him he should be ashamed of himself for being gay, according to court papers.

“Title IX’s sex discrimination prohibition extends to claims of discrimination based on gender identity or failure to conform to stereotypical notions of masculinity or femininity and OCR accepts such complaints for investigation,” reads the 46-page document [from Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights]. “Similarly, the actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity of the parties does not change a school’s obligations. Indeed, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth report high rates of sexual harassment and sexual violence. A school should investigate and resolve allegations of sexual violence regarding LGBT students using the same procedures and standards that it uses in all complaints involving sexual violence.”

Though aimed at clarifying how Title IX relates to sexual violence, the guidance carries far broader implications. LGBT advocates note that transgender students will not just be explicitly protected from physical or sexual abuse under Title IX, but from all forms of discrimination in education.

The Department of Education’s guidance builds off numerous court decisions and a 2012 opinion by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) that gender identity discrimination falls under sex discrimination, which is barred by Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Two other areas of federal law that explicitly protect individuals on the basis of gender identity and sexual orientation include hate crime legislation (the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act) and domestic violence legislation (the Violence Against Women ACT.)

Obama's Pentagon Escalates Culture War

The Department of Defense will begin making the morning-after pill Plan B available at all of its hospitals and health clinics around the world, officials announced Thursday.

The decision is the latest the Obama administration has made reversing politically sensitive policies involving women's health that were implemented during President George W. Bush's administration. Previously, the Obama administration has announced that it was rescinding a federal regulation that would have expanded the ability of health-care workers to refuse to provide medical care they found morally objectionable, including abortion and Plan B; has lifted federal restrictions on human embryonic stem cell research; and has restored funding to international family-planning groups.

The decision came after a recommendation by the Pentagon's Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, an advisory panel that voted in November to include Plan B and the generic Next Choice on the list of drugs all military facilities should stock. The Pentagon accepted the recommendation Feb. 3, a spokeswoman said.

Women's [pro-abortion] health advocates had long been pushing the Obama administration to allow the sale of the morning-after pill at military facilities. The same panel made a similar recommendation in 2002, but the policy was never implemented.

The morning-after pill, or “Plan-B” medication, is designed to prevent sperm from fertilizing an egg if taken before an embryo’s conception. However, the drug can be taken within 72 hours of sexual intercourse, and will also abort a newly conceived embryo by preventing its implanting into the wall of the mother’s womb. Although manufacturers bypass that fact by claiming life begins at implantation, not at the fertilization of the egg, science accepts that at the moment of conception DNA from the sperm and the egg unite to form a new and completely unique human being — nothing further is added by implantation.

After much controversy, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Plan-B for over-the-counter sales to women over 18 years-old in 2006.

Even pro-abortion advocates have admitted that emergency-contraception (EC) has a far higher failure rate at preventing pregnancy than theorists claimed. In a 2009 article for the RH Reality Check blog, journalists Elizabeth Westley, Francine Coeytaux and Elisa Wells reported that estimates showed that some effectiveness rates for Plan-B were reported as low as 59 percent and that EC had not driven down rates of unintended pregnancy or abortion. The trio expressed worries that such findings would “put the breaks on funding.”

Richards said Focus on the Family, the organization that paid for Tebow's 30-second advertisement to run on Sunday, is "far outside the mainstream" of American life.
