Virginity Advocacy Banned at Arkansas School

When 13-year-old Chloe Rubiano arrived at Ramay Junior High in Fayetteville, Arkansas she was pulled from class and told by administrators to change clothes because the words "Virginity Rocks" on her T-shirt might evoke religious discussions at her school where condoms are routinely distributed.

"Even positive messages can be disruptive and our schools must be fair and consistent in dealing with all our students."

Eighth-grader Chloe Rubiano of Ramay Junior High said she got the tee at a Christian festival last year; on the back, it continues its abstinence message: "I'm loving my Husband and I haven't even Married Him."

After the incident, Rubiano's mother, Bambi Crozier, took to Facebook to write a lengthy post defending her daughter's wardrobe choice, stating she has always encouraged her children to stand up for what they believe in.

As for concerns over free speech, [Supt.] Hewitt said Rubiano's message has come through loud and clear.

"Just the attention this incident has been given has certainly given the student and her mother the attention they sought. This is not a major free speech issue," according to Hewitt.

Rubiano told 5NEWS she got the shirt at a Christian-based festival.

“I just really like the shirt because I was always raised that way,” Rubiano said. “I didn’t really think anyone would make a big deal out of it.”

Rubiano said her vice principal told her that the shirt could distract the classroom environment, with the possibility that it “opens up too many doors for conversations.”

Rubiano said she will still wear the “Virginity Rocks” T- shirt in public.

However, she said she has decided to not wear it at school again.

“When my daughter made me aware of the situation, I made a simple remark on my Facebook [page] to all my friends,” she explained. “The next thing I know, I have a friend that called me at work telling me she shared my story with her reporter friend and he would be calling me. I didn't care if they wanted to run a story about it.”

“No distraction was caused when the Vice Principal requested Chloe remove it.  She was instructed to remove it for FEAR of starting conversations,” Crozier said. “Chloe told me no student said anything about the shirt last week until she was pulled from class to change it. THEN there was plenty of distraction because all the students wanted to know WHY Chloe had to change it.”

Students are continually asked to be tolerant of gender identity and sexual choices. In health classes across America, young students are provided comprehensive sex education. 'Gay Gene' Claimed by Pope's New Spanish Cardinal

Just when the liberal media believed they had effectively twisted Pope Francis and his supposed new doctrine into a pretzel, yet another high appointment in the Roman Catholic hierarchy has riled homosexualists -- ironically by agreeing that a yet-to-be-found "gay gene" exists, but says it's a defect.

Controversial remarks made by Spain's newest cardinal have landed the Catholic Church in hot water with gay rights advocates. Archbishop Fernando Sebastian Aguilar said Sunday that homosexuality was a "defect" that needed to be addressed so that homosexuals could find a way to cure themselves going forward.

"Our bodies have many defects. I have high blood pressure," said Aguilar, "It's a defect that I have to try and correct in whatever way I can...To say that homosexuality is a defect is not an insult: it helps because in many cases of homosexuality it is possible to recover and become normal with the right treatment."

The cardinal's comments were immediately condemned by Spanish gay rights group Colegas.

Yet the Pentagon is changing in ways that were unimaginable only months ago.

"For the first time ever, the Department of Defense is making a positive event over behavior (sodomy) that had been a court martial offense a year ago," Chaplain (Col.) Ron Crews, USAR retired, executive director for the Chaplain Alliance for Religious Liberty, told The Christian Post on Monday. "Now the DoD is wanting to honor that behavior. That's the stark reality that we're living in now."

"During the repeal process the Department of Defense told Congress and they also told us that the homosexual community would not be considered as a separate class within the military, but yet by this celebration they are making the LGBT community a separate class," Crews said. "They told us one thing during the repeal and now they are doing exactly the opposite, which makes me wonder what else did they say prior to repeal that is going to change?"

Crews is leery of the process and views the current White House administration's actions regarding gays in the military as deceptive. He questions how the military will react when a chaplain refuses to take part in an event such as Gay Pride Month. Chaplains in Crews' association will not participate, he said.

The [Pentagon gay celebration] announcement came during the same week that a group that advocates for the separation of church and state claimed victory after the DoD said it is removing military edition Bibles from its exchange stores. The chaplain alliance group is asking Congress to investigate whether the action taken was religious discrimination.

"By openly affirming bisexual and homosexual behavior, military leadership is coming into direct conflict with the morals and standards held almost universally by chaplains and service members of virtually every major faith group in the military," Crews explained. "This blatant attempt to 'celebrate' a minority view of political correctness will not endear military families to the military."

When asked about what his group hopes to accomplish by its announcement, he told CP, "I want the American public to see just where the current administration is leading our military. They have turned our armed forces into a social experiment at the cost of military readiness. I do not see how this action will encourage moms and dads to allow their sons and daughters to enlist."

Pregnant Teacher Sues Christian School for Firing

Cathy Samford was fired from the (Baptist) Heritage Christian Academy of Rockwall, Texas for being very pregnant and not married because, as a religious minister of the school, her employment contract required moral behavior as a "Christian role model."

Cathy Samford is 39-weeks pregnant and teaches at Heritage Christian Academy outside of Dallas. She had been coaching at volleyball at the private Baptist school and had even been named "Coach of the Year."

But the school let her go because of the it is written in her contract that she can not violate what is called a "morals" clause. School leaders told ABC affiliate, WFAA-TV, that she was not leading an example as a "Christian role model".

Samford has hired a lawyer and is considering legal action.

"I was in shock and devastated and that's when I said, 'If this is the problem, I'm willing, and so is my fiancé, to go ahead and get married,'" Samford told ABC News. "That wasn't the issue. We were going to get married regardless."

Samford has also said she will file a lawsuit against the school, citing gender and pregnancy discrimination with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Her lawyer, Colin Walsh, said it was against both state and federal law to fire someone preventatively for taking a pregnancy leave.

Dr. Ron Taylor, the school's headmaster, admitted that the decision to fire the pregnant teacher was not an easy one, but had to be done to preserve the morals that the Christian institution upholds.

"Everything that we stand for says that we want our teachers, who we consider to be in the ministry, to model what a Christian man or woman should be," he added. "How's it going to look to a little fourth grade girl that sees she's pregnant and she's not married?"

The teacher hopes to be reinstated or at least receive some kind of compensation for her termination

Democrat Senate Legalizes Bestiality in Military

On Nov. 15, the Senate Armed Services Committee unanimously approved S. 1867, the National Defense Authorization Act, which includes a provision to repeal Article 125 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ).

Article 125 of the UCMJ makes it illegal to engage in both sodomy with humans and sex with animals.

It states: "(a) Any person subject to this chapter who engages in unnatural carnal copulation with another person of the same or opposite sex or with an animal is guilty of sodomy. Penetration, however slight, is sufficient to complete the offense. (b) Any person found guilty of sodomy shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.”

“It’s all about using the military to advance this administration’s radical social agenda,” [Family Research Council President Tony] Perkins told CNSNews.com. “Not only did they overturn Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, but they had another problem, and that is, under military law sodomy is illegal, just as adultery is illegal, so they had to remove that prohibition against sodomy.”

This is the slippery slope that FRC warned of. For three long years, President Obama has worked to draft the military into his radical social agenda. The Vatican's emphasis on the need for changes in sexual activity has been boosted by studies showing that at least in Africa, prevention programs focusing on condom promotion aren't working and that what works is male circumcision and reducing the number of sexual partners.

Yet Dr. Edward Green, former director of the AIDS research project at Harvard University, said there is little financial support for programs that advocate partner reduction, particularly among Western donors who uniformly insist on condom distribution as part of prevention efforts.

Green says he belongs to no particular church and bases his findings on empirical evidence, not morality.

An AIDS conference hosted at the Vatican over the weekend quickly stamped out any lingering speculation that the Church might shift or broaden its policy against use of condoms to protect from HIV, the report added.

Instead, Vatican officials hailed recent findings that AIDS medications can be highly effective in preventing transmission and called for a change in "amoral sexual attitudes" that contribute to the spread of HIV.

Midwestern churches in conservative cities are challenging both tradition and Hollywood by emphasizing God's design for sex within marriage, but many Christians prefer the churches keep their sex private.

Mooneyham indicated that in a poll on the church's website, 86 percent of the respondents said they were not having enough sex in their marriage.

"This is really one of the major issues that's ripping marriages apart. They are at a higher risk of adultery, looking at pornography -- that leads to divorce," Mooneyham said.

When people go to the [advertised Internet] site, the link brings users to The Blended Church -- a non-denominational and non-traditional church that preaches, among other things, about the positive aspects of a healthy sex life within marriage, Indiana's Fox59 reports.

However, many motorists are offended by the advertisement, saying it's bad exposure for kids.

But Pastor Dehner Maurer, whose church is responsible for the signs, disagrees.

"Hollywood is speaking it. The Super Bowl is talking about it, so the church should be talking about it," he says.

"We're just trying to be real and relevant and speak about issues that we face and that's a part of life."

As the U.S. follows the European dechristianization model, where few people get married, the youngest adults in America now see little need for marriage according to the latest from Pew Research.

. . . only 30% of ["millenial"] adults 18-29 surveyed in January 2010 put having a successful marriage in the ["important things" category].

. . . when young adults of Generation X were asked the same question during a Washington Post/Kaiser/Harvard survey in 1997 . . . 35% put a successful marriage at the same level.

There was not a strong correlation found between the marital status of their parents and millenials' views on marriage. Of those whose parents were married, 32 percent said marriage was one of the most important things. Of those whose parents were not married, 27 percent called marriage important.

The correlation was much stronger among Gen-Xers. Forty-two percent with married parents said marriage was the most important thing in life, and 23% who grew up with unmarried parents put marriage in the same category.

That's not shocking stuff, considering that an October survey, according to a report from Pew and Time, found that 40% of all American adults believe marriage is becoming obsolete, up from just 28% in 1978.

Pew Research surveys also find that Millennials are less likely than adults ages 30 and older to say that a child needs a home with both a father and mother to grow up happily and that single parenthood and unmarried couple parenthood are bad for society.

In many—but not all—respects, these attitudinal changes mirror behavioral changes. Young adults today are slower to marry than were their counterparts in older generations. Just 22% of Millennials are currently married. Back when Gen Xers were the same age that Millennials are now, some three-in-ten of them were married, as were more than four-in-ten Baby Boomers and more than half of the members of the Silent Generation (ages 65 and older).

The delay in marriage among today’s young adults has been accompanied by a corresponding increase in the rate of out-of-wedlock births. Just over half (51%) of all births among Millennials in 2008 were to unwed mothers, compared with just under four-in-ten (39%) among Gen Xers in 1997, when they were the same age that Millennials are now.

However, the overall incidence of parenthood among young adults has declined. In 2010, 36% of women ages 18 to 29 had ever had [live] children; in 1998, that figure was 41%.

The theme throughout the Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition's presidential forum was a push to make social conservative values on par with the economy in the upcoming elections. Foreign policy was barely mentioned — there was one reference apiece to Libya and Israel.

That sentiment was echoed by national Faith and Freedom Coalition head Ralph Reed, who said, “If you turn your backs on the pro family pro life constituency... you will be consigned to permanent minority status."

Meshing the Tea Party Agenda and the Evangelical Agenda: Well, that happened fast. In the run-up to the midterm elections most Republican candidates were (suspiciously) silent on the issues of abortion and gay marriage. Instead, the focus was on lowering taxes, reducing the size of government, taming the national debt, etc.

What was curious yesterday was how evangelical worldview and Tea Party bluster seamlessly coalesced. Nearly every one of the speakers managed to integrate anti-abortion themes with small government appeals.

"We need to be a country that turns toward God," declaimed Pawlenty," not a country that turns away from God." Gingrich spoke of the need for "a change so deep and so profound that nothing we have seen in our lifetime is comparable to the level of depth we have to go to get this country back on the right track." Santorum urged his listeners to fight for their freedom.

As a scholar of the Bible I find it fascinating, and alarming, that so many politicians (even Catholic ones such as Gingrich and Santorum) are reading the Constitution precisely the same way evangelicals read their Scriptures.

Iowa groups that oppose same-sex marriage are riding high after victories in last fall's midterm elections. They're hoping that momentum will help them influence the selection of the Republican candidate who will take on President Barack Obama.

The Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition invited candidates to its presidential forum with this reminder: In 2008, 60 percent of Iowa GOP caucus-goers claimed to be evangelical Christians. In the invitation, the coalition's president, Steve Scheffler, said there would be no better opportunity to meet those people than the forum.

Republicans won back the governor's office, the Iowa House, and, in their biggest victory, social conservatives voted to remove three Iowa Supreme Court justices because of their decision allowing same-sex marriage.

Iowa Family Leader President Bob Vanderplaats . . . said he thinks opposition to same-sex marriage will play nationally in next year's presidential race as well. And Vanderplaats thinks the issue will be even bigger than it otherwise would have thanks to the Obama Administration's recent determination that the federal Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional.

Pawlenty, the former Minnesota governor, said America needs "to be a country that turns toward God, not a country that turns away from God." He railed against the "immoral debt" and efforts to define marriage as between anything other than one man and one woman.

"We need to remember, as others try to push out or marginalize people of faith...the Constitution was designed to protect people of faith from government, not to protect government from people of faith," said Pawlenty, who complained that the media, judges and "elites" need to remember the Constitution grants power to the people.

"We the people of the United States will rise up again, we will take back our country," he added, his voice going horse.

"Once you stick your head out on the social issues, once you fight for the social fabric of this country, you're labeled," said [Rick] Santorum, who pointed to his efforts to end partial birth abortion but also his work on health care and welfare reform. He joked that his children had come to think his first name was "ultra," a reference to how he had been portrayed as extreme in the media.

When civil unions were legalized in Illinois, a pair of downstate men started planning their future, but when they tried to rent a hall for the celebration, they learned discrimination does not end with a stroke of the governor’s pen.

Now the pair has filed complaints against two bed and breakfasts which refused to rent them space for a ceremony and reception, including one in the Kankakee area.

One owner explained he only hosted “traditional weddings” and not civil unions, while the other was more emphatic, telling the men homosexual unions were “wrong” and citing Bible verses to justify his opinion.

They chose the two particular inns because they are natives of southern Indiana and northern Kentucky and it would be easier for family members to drive to Alton or Paxton then to Chicago, Whathen said Tuesday.

The complaint is based not on the [new] Religious Freedom Protection and Civil Union Act but on the state's Human Rights Act, which has a "public accommodations" section that makes it a violation to "deny or refuse to another the full and equal enjoyment of the facilities, goods, and services of any public place of accommodation" for discriminatory reasons.

Gay rights activists say the law means that Illinois establishments must provide services regardless of the sexual orientation of customers.

Both the civil union law and the Human Rights Act contain exemptions for religious reasons, but neither appears to allow the barring of same-sex couples from accommodations like the ones Wathen was seeking.

The civil union law exempts individual clergy or religious organizations from having to perform same-sex ceremonies if doing so is against their beliefs. The Human Rights Act specifies that the "expression of religiously based views" by the owner of a public accommodation doesn't constitute discrimination, but it doesn't allow that owner to withhold services based on those views.

NY Gov. Cuomo Should Be Denied Communion

Dr. Edward Peters, a Vatican canon law adviser, says that Governor Andrew Cuomo has committed an “objectively sacreligious” act that “produces grave scandal” by receiving communion.

Peters specifically cited Cuomo's cohabiting with Food Network hostess Sandra Lee as "publicly acting in violation of a fundamental moral expectation of the Church," and that "as long as he persists in such conduct, he should refrain from taking holy Communion" and "if he approaches for holy Communion, he should be denied the august sacrament in accord with Canon 915."

[Recently, Gov.] Cuomo, as the Daily News reported, “the divorced son of former Gov. Mario Cuomo, who was once chastised by Catholic leaders for his support of abortion rights, calmly received Holy Communion. Lee walked in line for Communion with him.”

Writing about the Cuomo-Lee relationship on his canon lawyer’s blog on Jan. 4, Dr. Peters wrote, “Andrew Cuomo, governor of New York, and Sandra Lee, a television celebrity, live in what is known technically as public concubinage. The fact that both Cuomo and Lee are divorced renders the concubinage adulterous on both sides as well.”

In his Plan for Action, Cuomo calls for putting same-sex marriage on the same legal ground as heterosexual marriage. He also defends abortion and calls for its expansion under the Reproductive Rights Act.

Most Teens Want to be Virgins at Marriage

Half of the over 5,000 teens surveyed concluded that sex before marriage was "never" morally acceptable; over 70 percent rejected the practice of "living together" before marriage; and 61 percent confessed they would like to be a virgin on their wedding day.

A new study from a youth research organization finds that even amidst a culture in which an aggressive media encourages teens to become sexually active, a solid majority still want to embrace traditional values regarding sex. According to the latest research by OneHope, a Christian youth outreach that provides research to non-profit organizations, 61 percent of American teens want to remain abstinent until marriage, with an additional 63 percent saying that while they have already been sexually active, they would like to return to a place of sexual purity.

[The study found:]

• 82 percent of teens said they believe God intended marriage to last a lifetime.

• 64 percent said religion is somewhat or very important to them.

• 80 percent said parents had at least some influence over their thoughts and actions (followed by teachers and friends).

On a more alarming note, the survey found that:

• 69 percent of the teens surveyed said they regularly watch MTV (sponsors of such fare as the overtly sexualized weekly teen drama Skins).

• 65 percent said they believe that truth is relative.

• 52 percent said they believe spiritual development is not necessary for a satisfying life.

• 50 percent said they considered an unmarried man and woman a family.

• 34 percent said they spend less than 15 minutes a week talking with their fathers about things that matter to them.

"Even among the students who saw ... virginity is something to be saved for marriage, many of them, 77 percent, believe there's nothing wrong with passionate kissing; a third of them, 34 percent, believed it was OK to have sex before marriage; in other words, their belief about virginity or about preserving intimacy for marriage was a very private belief. They didn't see it as something that was right, they saw it as something that was right for them, and that came through more and more frequently in the research."

"Our double-bed policy was based on our sincere beliefs about marriage, not hostility to anybody," Hazelmary Bull told the court. She insisted the policy "was applied equally and consistently to unmarried heterosexual couples and homosexual couples."

But Judge Andrew Rutherford said the Bulls' views were outdated and violated Britain's Equality Act of 2007.

"It is inevitable that laws will, from time to time, cut across the deeply held beliefs of individuals and sections of society, so they reflect the social attitudes and morals prevailing at the time they are made," the judge said in his 12-page ruling.

"Not so very long ago," he added, "these beliefs would have been those accepted as normal by society at large. Now it is the other way around."

He is right. Popular morality has completely rejected these ancient values, and the government has followed suit. Even English common law, the law that the judge said was based on Judeo-Christian principles, “has been largely superseded” by “the enormous growth of statutory legislation,” he said.

“In our parliamentary democracy it is for parliament to frame laws which reflect these changes in attitude or which give a lead to such changes,” he said. “Whatever may have been the position in past centuries it is no longer the case that our laws must, or should, automatically reflect the Judeo-Christian position.”

Miss Woods shares her impressions: “[I]t’s hard to escape the uncomfortable feeling that this elderly couple – narrow-minded, eccentric, singularly lacking in business nous in their batty rejection of modern mores, gay and straight – have been miscast as both persecuted and persecutors and will come off badly whatever happens.”

It is intimated that the Bulls simply should have known better. One does not challenge the New Order of Things: “Despite being fully aware of new anti-discriminatory legislation, they have continued to enforce their bizarre Fifties house rules, because the Lord is on their side even if, as now transpires, the law isn’t.”

At this point, I had to stop and go back and check whether this was classified under “Comment,” or maybe “Culture” or “Lifestyle” where one might be more disposed to grant some editorial latitude. No, it’s firmly labeled “News.”

Chinese Gov't Buys Into Christian Abstinence

[Chinese] teachers are being trained with a sex education curriculum created by the conservative Christian group Focus on the Family.

. . . Evangelical Christian groups want an entree into China. And Chinese authorities, despite the country's official atheism, want help with controlling population growth and managing the society's rapidly shifting values.

At an early demonstration of the abstinence curriculum two years ago - given to the Communist Youth League of China in Hangzhou - teens were supposed to end the seminar by making a virginity pledge, the hallmark of the Christian group's abstinence program. But government officials quickly stepped in, insisting that the kids pledge to no one but the Communist Party.

Officials in Yunnan, however, said Focus on the Family's message of abstinence resonated with the province's conservative leadership.

"Nowadays, teenagers have too many different channels for learning about sex," said Ma Lianhong, Yunnan's former secretary general of media, who introduced the Christian group to provincial leaders. "Even if you don't talk about it, they will just learn about it quietly by themselves, which is even more dangerous. . . . Abstinence is good for keeping the families steady and bringing down the divorce rate. And it complies with China's traditional morals."

Researcher Lisa Rue, Ph.D., a specialist in adolescent behavior, wrote an editorial in the Times Call revealing that the HHS had blocked her repeated requests for the full detailed study, including a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. According to Rue, the HHS said they would not release the full study because they were “pre-decisional and deliberative" – a claim Rue said she found hard to believe, since the study has been publically mentioned at least twice.

Rue suspected the full details were being withheld because they would undermine the Obama administration’s priorities on sex education, which do not include sexual abstinence or address the issue of fatherlessness in children’s lives.

Rue concluded, “At this point in time, we must ask ourselves: Is this valuable process being suppressed by those who wish to repress American values in an effort to exert control over sex education offered in the United States?"

Florida teacher Jarretta Hamilton was fired for breaking the school's morality code by becoming pregnant while not married.

In April 2009, Hamilton told her boss at Southland Christian School in St. Cloud, Fla., that she was pregnant and planned to take a six-week leave in October. When asked when she conceived, Hamilton answered honestly: She became pregnant just three weeks prior to her Feb. 20 wedding.

That was enough to get her fired under the school's strict morality rules, which prohibit teachers from "fornication," engaging in sex before marriage.

Now, Hamilton is suing the school in federal court, seeking damages for lost wages and emotional distress.

According to the complaint, Hamilton is suing under federal gender discrimination laws, a state marriage discrimination law and for violations of her privacy.

The school does not dispute the reasons for firing Hamilton, calling sex outside of marriage "an immoral action," but argues that her termination does not rise to discrimination because it employs other pregnant women.

'Sex Addiction' Latest Excuse for Sinful Nature

The ad nauseam search by secular society to blame character flaws on something/somebody beyond ourselves

. . . is sex addiction rehab just the latest tool in the celebrity image rehab arsenal -- the next stop after the mea culpa statement? Are all cheaters (at least of the bold-faced variety) sex addicts? And are there really any beneficiaries when celebs . . . check themselves in for a little sexual soul searching?

. . . Because, here's the thing -- I'm not convinced that cheating is something that should be treated in the same way as, say, meth addiction or alcoholism. Yes, sex junkies exist and -- as we see daily in the tabloids -- sacrifice their images and careers because they just couldn't resist a little extra something on the side. But does an open zipper policy automatically indicate sex addiction?

To help me sort through my doubts about sex addiction, I called on Dr. Andrea Bonior, author of the Express's Baggage Check column, to explain sex addiction and what's involved in treatment.

Here's Dr. Andrea's definition:

"Sex addiction -- though its diagnosis is controversial -- is much more than the urge to get some on the side. It is an all-encompassing, often compulsive preoccupation with sexual thoughts and behavior. It takes over a person's life and determines so many aspects of their day-- and they're unable to tone it down."

Calif. ACLU Fights Abstinence Education

A battle over sex education is under way in Sonoma County [California], pitting a longtime abstinence-only group against California Department of Education officials who say the group breaks state law when it teaches in the classroom.

Among the players in the unfolding debate are the ACLU of Northern California, the California Department of Education, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and Free to Be, a Sonoma County group that has been promoting abstinence until marriage for 17 years.

Caught in the middle are schools and districts that have hosted Free to Be speakers, including teens, to talk to students about the benefits of abstaining from sex until they are married.

Free to Be was established in 1992 in association with Catholic Charities as an abstinence-until-marriage outreach program relying heavily on teen presenters. Free to Be ended the affiliation with Catholic Charities approximately 18 months ago, said executive director and founder Sue Bisbee.

As far back as 2000, Free to Be has received annual federal funding for its abstinence program, which helps train teen speakers to spread the word about waiting until marriage before having sex, as well as living drug free and making what it describes as “healthy choices.”

Bisbee said the group gives presentations in about 30 schools each year. According to the group’s Web site, more than 75,000 teens have heard a Free to Be presentation . . .

President Barack Obama last month proposed eliminating abstinence-only education funding from teen pregnancy prevention initiatives.

The nation's bishops have warned Catholic colleges and universities against honoring lawmakers who dissent from church teaching on major moral concerns such as abortion. It's a thorny issue for the schools, which have long struggled to balance their Catholic identity with academic freedom and a desire to place themselves at the center of American life.

Asked about the volume of complaints to the university, Brown said it was "nothing beyond what we anticipated."

Obama will be the ninth U.S. president to receive an honorary degree from Notre Dame.

Instead Notre Dame has chosen prestige over principles, popularity over morality. Whatever may be President Obama’s admirable qualities, this honor comes on the heels of some of the most anti-life actions of any American president, including expanding federal funding for abortions and inviting taxpayer-funded research on stem cells from human embryos.

The honor also comes amid great concern among Catholics nationwide about President Obama’s future impact on American society, the family, and the Catholic Church on issues such as traditional marriage, conscience protections for Catholic doctors and nurses, and expansion of abortion “rights.”

This honor is clearly a direct violation of the U.S. bishops’ 2004 mandate in “Catholics in Political Life”: “The Catholic community and Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles. They should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions.”
