Virgin Births: IVF Eliminating Fatherhood

Fertility clinics are now furthering the notion of the “synthetic family” by making fathers obsolete in procreation even among non-lesbian women who prefer to give birth prior to sexual intercourse with "Mr. Right."
"Some wish to save sexual intercourse for a special relationship. They feel they have not found the right partner to share sex with, but they know they want a baby now."

-- From "Women who have never had sex give 'virgin birth' through IVF, say doctors" by Jess Staufenberg, UK Independent 9/28/15

About 25 young women in the UK who are hetereosexual and in their twenties have opted for IVF in the past five years because they feel ready to be a parent, doctors told the Mail on Sunday.

Whilst some religious groups have said a child should be brought up in a traditional family, one doctor said these single mothers are often more emotionally and financially stable than others who have been left to bring up a child after a relationship breakdown.

The news follows up a survey in 2013 which showed that one in every 200 women in the US reported to have become pregnant without having had sexual intercourse.

Out of these women, 31% said they had signed a chastity pledge whereby they vow, usually for religious reasons, not to have sex. About 28% of those girls' parents said they rarely talked to them about sex or contraception - compared to only 5% of other women who became pregnant and had had intercourse.

From "Virgin Births: 25 Heterosexual Women In Britain Have Given Birth Without Ever Having Sex" by Ellen Wallwork, The Huffington Post UK 9/28/15

Fertility treatments have opened up the ways by which women and men can become parents and four British IVF firms have said they had assisted a heterosexual virgin to have a baby: Care Fertility, The London Women’s Clinic, Create Fertility, and the Assisted Reproduction and Gynaecology Centre.

The decision to provide fertility treatment in such cases was criticised by some religious groups, who claimed it undermined the importance of bringing up children in stable marriages, as well as from Josephine Quintavalle, from the group Comment on Reproductive Ethics, who said to the Mail:

"The message from nature is for a male and female to have a child, and I am saddened that we are willing to distort this.

"The diminished role of the father is not desirable for the child. Once you start down this route, where do you stop?"

Fertiilty doctors said single women who had never had sexual intercourse were seeking donor-assisted treatment – at a cost of around £5,000 – because they wanted to have a child now and save sex for a “special relationship”.

Maha Ragunath, medical director of its clinic in Nottingham, said: “The number of single women I see has doubled over the last decade and single women now account for at least ten per cent of my patients.

“A lot of them are very young, in their 20s, sometimes studying or doing very ordinary jobs and often living with their parents, rather than career women who have been driven and focused too much on their work”

“They are extremely happy to go ahead on their own and don’t care about the implications that might bring for the child or how they would go into a new relationship.”

Supporters of the traditional family system, however, have blasted the "distorted" move, stating that it was turning young children into "teddy bears" that are to be "picked off the shelf."

Some religious groups have also claimed that the move undermines the value of having children brought up in a stable marriage, while one leading psychotherapist has warned that a mother who has never been in a relationship could potential harm the development of the child.

Imam Suhaib Hasan, head of the Islamic Sharia Council in the UK, accused doctors engaged in providing IVF treatment to patients of acting like God.

Hasan said that when the man is removed from the aspect of a family, the woman becomes merely a breeding machine. He added that it effectively denies the right of the child to have a father.

From "Virgin Babies: Side Effects After Birth" by Anna Amad, The Science Times 9/28/15

Professor Robert Winston said "test-tube babies could suffer terrible health problems because the clinics were using IVF techniques which had not been properly tested."

He added, that the risk could include birth defects, genetic damage which may not emerge until adulthood and an increased chance of cancer. The medical profession was ignoring the evidence of problems that could take place.

Aside from that, he stressed the long-term attack of IVF, and follows a growing body of evidence that test tube babies are less healthy than the naturally conceived children.

Conversely, another study had been generated by Lord Winston at over three million normal conceptions and 40,000 IVF babies that found that IVF babies were two and half times more likely to have a low birth weight and prematurity compared to those babies with normal reproduction. Since it is not 100% guaranteed, it can lead to unsuccessful birth cycle.

Winston even stated, that small babies are more likely to grow up to develop vascular disease, diabetes, hypertension and osteoporosis.

Florida High School Facebook Madam: Virgins $100

17-year-old Alexa Nicole De Armas was arrested for operating a Facebook-based prostitution ring using fellow Sarasota County high school female classmates.  Experienced teenage hookers were advertised for as little as $40 plus a bottle of booze, whereas the short supply of virgin girls were priced slightly higher.

Debbie Tippen of the Sarasota County school’s communications office declined comment

A Venice High School student, 15-year-old Julian Luis Mathena, also was arrested and charged with human trafficking, the Venice Police Department announced Tuesday.

The alleged ring first came to light in October after four students at Venice High School told administrators that De Armas and Mathena wanted them to join, according to police. About the same time, police looked into reports of a Riverview High School student's involvement with [a 21-year-old customer, John Michael] Mosher.

The two students are said to have come up with a plan over the summer to prostitute teens for money and alcohol. Police documents indicate that the ringleader arranged for Mosher to have sex with the 15-year-old girl in a community pool shed in August.

[Venice Police Capt. Tom] Mattmuller said an investigation into the prostitution ring is still ongoing, but that his department currently did not expect to make any more arrests.

“This looks like it is isolated between Sarasota High School, Venice High School and Riverview High School,” he said.

Police reported Monday that they had also arrested John Michael Mosher, 21, on a felony charge of sexual battery on a victim older than 12. In August, he reportedly paid $40 and a bottle of liquor to have sex with a 15-year-old girl that Mathena and De Armas recruited from Riverview High School.

Mattmuller said the girl appeared to have been the only person prostituted by Mathena and De Armas, although at least four more had been solicited by the pair after they were paid by Mosher.

“Why pimp out old hoes when I have fresh young hoes I can give up for money?” De Armas wrote in one Facebook exchange to a business partner, adding, “As long as I'm getting paid I'm trafficking all these (expletive deleted).”

After Mosher paid for the sex, the police reports said, De Armas and an accomplice began trying to recruit other girls to have sex with clients to gain money and alcohol. They planned to use some of the money to buy narcotics, according to witness statements to police.

During a police investigation after a search warrant was issued for De Armas' Facebook account, police said they found conversations between potential business partners, participants and details of how transactions would be made; prices for services included $50 to $70 to perform oral sex and $100 for intercourse with a virgin. They considered a 40 percent profit split for prostitutes.

Virginity Advocacy Banned at Arkansas School

When 13-year-old Chloe Rubiano arrived at Ramay Junior High in Fayetteville, Arkansas she was pulled from class and told by administrators to change clothes because the words "Virginity Rocks" on her T-shirt might evoke religious discussions at her school where condoms are routinely distributed.

Eighth-grader Chloe Rubiano of Ramay Junior High said she got the tee at a Christian festival last year; on the back, it continues its abstinence message: "I'm loving my Husband and I haven't even Married Him."

After the incident, Rubiano's mother, Bambi Crozier, took to Facebook to write a lengthy post defending her daughter's wardrobe choice, stating she has always encouraged her children to stand up for what they believe in.

As for concerns over free speech, [Supt.] Hewitt said Rubiano's message has come through loud and clear.

"Just the attention this incident has been given has certainly given the student and her mother the attention they sought. This is not a major free speech issue," according to Hewitt.

“I just really like the shirt because I was always raised that way,” Rubiano said. “I didn’t really think anyone would make a big deal out of it.”

Rubiano said her vice principal told her that the shirt could distract the classroom environment, with the possibility that it “opens up too many doors for conversations.”

Rubiano said she will still wear the “Virginity Rocks” T- shirt in public.

However, she said she has decided to not wear it at school again.

Crozier also says that she and her daughter did not reach out to the news media after the incident.

“When my daughter made me aware of the situation, I made a simple remark on my Facebook [page] to all my friends,” she explained. “The next thing I know, I have a friend that called me at work telling me she shared my story with her reporter friend and he would be calling me. I didn't care if they wanted to run a story about it.”

“No distraction was caused when the Vice Principal requested Chloe remove it.  She was instructed to remove it for FEAR of starting conversations,” Crozier said. “Chloe told me no student said anything about the shirt last week until she was pulled from class to change it. THEN there was plenty of distraction because all the students wanted to know WHY Chloe had to change it.”

This same school openly discusses all aspects of sex in their health classes and distributes condoms to those seeking to have “safer” sex. Yet, Chloe Rubiano cannot wear a shirt proclaiming her views on premarital sex. In Chloe’s opinion, virginity isn’t offensive; it’s totally appropriate. . . .

Students are continually asked to be tolerant of gender identity and sexual choices. In health classes across America, young students are provided comprehensive sex education. But isn’t it interesting how the idea of virginity is just a bit too much of a distraction? The one thing students need to hear is that more than half of all high school students are delaying sexual activity—so Chloe isn’t alone in believing that Virginity Rocks.

Abstinent Teens the Norm, Moral Sex-Ed Works: Study

UPDATE 3/7/14: Obama Wants an End to Abstinence, Favors Anal Sex

-- From "Congressional Report: Abstinence Education is Best Sex-Ed Approach" by Steven Ertelt, LifeNews.com 7/9/12

The report examined the theory and the evidence behind both Sexual Risk Avoidance Abstinence Education and Sexual Risk Reduction, or so-called Comprehensive Sex Education and concluded that abstinence education is the superior approach and one that deserves policy priority.

The report goes on to recommend that abstinence education: “is a better approach, because it is built on sound theory and empirical evidence.”

From "Family Fact of Week: The Abstinent Majority" by Christine Kim, The Heritage Foundation 7/5/12

According to a new, definitive two-part report from the National Abstinence Education Association (NAEA), “The Sexual Risk Avoidance (SRA) approach, sometimes called the Abstinence-centered approach, is effective, supported by parents, and is a message more and more teens are adopting in their own lives.”

Largely misrepresented, SRA education is more than just about saying “no.” Abstinence-centered and holistic, the SRA strategy offers skill-building topics such as goal setting and future orientation, healthy decision making, building assets, avoiding negative peer pressure, and human development.

By contrast, the sexual risk reduction (SRR) model, often known as the “comprehensive” approach, “is built on the premise that teens either cannot, or will not, abstain from sex; therefore they must learn to take ‘precautions’ that will decrease their risk of becoming pregnant.”

Moreover, the majority of teens themselves are supportive of the abstinence message. Specifically:
•62 percent of teens say that it is against their values to have sex before marriage;
•75 percent of teens believe that having sex would make life difficult;
•84 percent of teens oppose sex at their age; and
•69 percent of teens oppose sex while in high school.

From "Tenn. law restricting sex-ed could serve as national model" by John Evans, Baptist Press 7/5/12

State legislators in Tennessee have made it official: Sex toys and graphic promotions of sexual activity are not welcome in public schools.

With the signing into law of SB 3310 by Gov. Bill Haslam, public schools that teach sex education classes must emphasize abstinence, and teachers are barred from promoting "gateway sexual activity" that encourages students to sexually experiment.

The Family Action Council of Tennessee (FACTN) documented a 2010 incident at Hillsboro High School in Nashville when a speaker with Nashville CARES, an AIDS awareness and education program, taught a sex education class at the school. The speaker used anatomically correct models to show students how to perform a graphic sex act. FACTN also noted that in some schools, Planned Parenthood presented sexual education curriculum that included links to its national website.

[Valerie Huber, executive director of the National Abstinence Education Association, said] that some organizations claim they teach abstinence, but their curriculum goes in a decidedly different direction.

Virginity Lost as Teen = Divorce Later

A University of Iowa study has found that the younger a teenage girl becomes sexual active, the more likely she will divorce later in life.
There may be "a causal explanation –- that the early sexual experience led to the development of behaviors or beliefs that promote divorce."

He found 31 percent of women who had sex for the first time as teens divorced within five years after marrying. 47 percent divorced within 10 years.

The divorce rate for women who delayed sex until adulthood decreased dramatically.

Women who had sex before the age of 16 were more likely to get divorced. Unwanted sex at a young age doubled the chance of a failed marriage, and only a small percent of women who had sex before 18 said it's something they really wanted to do.

Dr. Anthony Paik said the survey did control for other variables that might lead to a divorce. He said he recognizes there are a lot of other factors that can cause divorce, but he believes teenage sex is definitely one thing to consider.

Among women who delayed sex until adulthood, 15 per cent divorced at five years, compared to 27 per cent at 10 years.

The findings were published in the April issue of the Journal of Marriage and Family.

Thirty-one percent of women who lost their virginity during adolescence had premarital sex with multiple partners, compared to 24 per cent of those who waited.

Twenty-nine percent experienced premarital conceptions, versus 15 percent who waited.

One in four women who had sex as a teen had a baby before they were married, compared to only one in ten who waited until adulthood.

The United States government conducted a survey regarding sex in America through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In a reverse trend from the past, the survey results show that 27% of men and 29% of women in the 15-to-24 age group have never had sex. Previously, the statistics indicated that only 22% of both males and females in that age group were virgins.

The survey also analyzed same-sex experiences among the sexes in the 15-to-44 age group. About 13% of women claimed to have had same-sex partners compared to only 5% of men.

The uptick in abstinence is one of many revealing facts arising from structured interviews with a random sample of 13,495 Americans, ages 15 to 44, that were done from 2006 to 2008. The findings provide evidence for almost every theory and supposition about the nation's secret sex life.

The survey results, released Thursday, suggest that oral sex may be a gateway to vaginal sex but that for some teens it is a stopping point. Most adults are monogamous. About 4 in 10 adults have had anal sex. Women are more likely than men to have same-sex liaisons. Or at least are more comfortable talking about them.

"The perception is all kids are engaging in oral sex. Obviously, that's not the case," says Jennifer Manlove, a senior research scientist with the Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit Child Trends, who studies teen sexuality. "They may be more in control of their behaviors than we think."

Debbie Roffman, a human sexuality educator in Baltimore, says it does appear "that there is a trend toward postponement."

While changes from the earlier numbers are small, the new study goes into much greater detail and fills in many gaps in the 2002 data, says lead author Anjani Chandra. Definitions, including specific descriptions of behaviors such as oral sex, were included in the new report to avoid miscommunication, she says.

Among men and women 18-44, 94% of women and 96% of men identified themselves as heterosexual while 1.1% of women and 1.7% of men said they were homosexual. The percentage of women who identified themselves as bisexual was more than three times that of men: 3.5% of women vs. 1.1% of men.

From "CDC Report: Most Teens Not Having Sex, Abstinence Ed Works" by Steven Ertelt, LifeNews.com 3/4/11

Valerie Huber of the National Abstinence Education Association [says] that these numbers are a positive change from 2002 when only 46% of boys and 49% of girls reported no sexual contact and she says the report challenges the wisdom of the recent federal funding cuts to abstinence education.

“One hundred sixty-nine abstinence education programs lost funding and over 1 million students lost access to the very programs that can support and encourage the positive trends represented by this data,” she told LifeNews.com. “If we are serious about decreasing teen sexual activity, we need to use the data to instruct public policy.”

She continued, “Funding priority should be given to programs that support this healthy trend rather than capitulating to those who want to normalize sex among teens and simply offer contraception as a solution. The data renders ‘null and void’ the ‘abstinence is unrealistic’ claims made by anti-abstinence advocacy groups.“

Most Teens Want to be Virgins at Marriage

Half of the over 5,000 teens surveyed concluded that sex before marriage was "never" morally acceptable; over 70 percent rejected the practice of "living together" before marriage; and 61 percent confessed they would like to be a virgin on their wedding day.

-- From "Study Reveals That Teens Desire Abstinence Until Marriage" by Dave Bohon, The New American 2/14/11

A new study from a youth research organization finds that even amidst a culture in which an aggressive media encourages teens to become sexually active, a solid majority still want to embrace traditional values regarding sex. According to the latest research by OneHope, a Christian youth outreach that provides research to non-profit organizations, 61 percent of American teens want to remain abstinent until marriage, with an additional 63 percent saying that while they have already been sexually active, they would like to return to a place of sexual purity.

[The study found:]
• 82 percent of teens said they believe God intended marriage to last a lifetime.

• 64 percent said religion is somewhat or very important to them.

• 80 percent said parents had at least some influence over their thoughts and actions (followed by teachers and friends).
On a more alarming note, the survey found that:
• 69 percent of the teens surveyed said they regularly watch MTV (sponsors of such fare as the overtly sexualized weekly teen drama Skins).

• 65 percent said they believe that truth is relative.

• 52 percent said they believe spiritual development is not necessary for a satisfying life.

• 50 percent said they considered an unmarried man and woman a family.

• 34 percent said they spend less than 15 minutes a week talking with their fathers about things that matter to them.

The verified online survey of teens aged 13-18 was conducted by the international Christian children's ministry OneHope and strictly randomized to include a proportioned mix of students from different races, parts of the country and urban vs. rural residence.

Chad Causey, OneHope's vice president of global ministries explained the survey's questions about sexuality were merely part of a broader attempt to understand how teens think.

"What was striking to us was, while we celebrated the 61 percent who said that they wanted to be a virgin when they were married, it became quickly apparent that that belief was loosely held," Causey told CBN News. "Even among the students who saw ... virginity is something to be saved for marriage, many of them, 77 percent, believe there's nothing wrong with passionate kissing; a third of them, 34 percent, believed it was OK to have sex before marriage; in other words, their belief about virginity or about preserving intimacy for marriage was a very private belief. They didn't see it as something that was right, they saw it as something that was right for them, and that came through more and more frequently in the research."

Obama Proved Wrong on Abstinence Education

Contradicting the recent CDC report . . .

Sex education classes that focus on encouraging children to remain abstinent can persuade a significant proportion to delay sexual activity, researchers reported Monday in a landmark study that could have major implications for U.S. efforts to protect young people against unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases.

-- From "Abstinence-only programs might work, study says" by Rob Stein, Washington Post Staff Writer 2/2/10

Only about a third of sixth- and seventh-graders who completed an abstinence-focused program started having sex within the next two years, researchers found. Nearly half of the students who attended other classes, including ones that combined information about abstinence and contraception, became sexually active.

The findings are the first clear evidence that an abstinence program could work.

"I think we've written off abstinence-only education without looking closely at the nature of the evidence," said John B. Jemmott III, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania who led the federally funded study. "Our study shows this could be one approach that could be used."

The research, published in the Archives of Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine, comes amid intense debate over how to reduce sexual activity, pregnancies, births and sexually transmitted diseases among children and teenagers. After falling for more than a decade, the numbers of births, pregnancies and STDs among U.S. teens have begun increasing.

The Obama administration eliminated more than $170 million in annual federal funding targeted at abstinence programs after a series of reports concluded that the approach was ineffective. Instead, the White House is launching a $114 million pregnancy prevention initiative that will fund only programs that have been shown scientifically to work -- a program the administration on Monday proposed expanding to $183 million.

The study is the first to evaluate an abstinence program using a carefully designed approach comparing it with several alternative strategies and following subjects for an extended period of time, considered the kind of study that produces the highest level of scientific evidence.

The abstinence program had no negative effects on condom use, which has been a major criticism of the abstinence approach.

The 16-year-old, from Newry, Northern Ireland, posted an advert on Gumtree, alongside details about flat shares and second-hand furniture.

She claimed she needed the money to put herself through art classes and university.

Last year Alina Percea, 18, from Romania, was so desperate to earn money to go to university she put her chastity up to the highest bidder.

In 2008 18-year-old US student in San Diego, Natalie Dylan, told the Howard Stern show she would have sex for the first time for $1 million to pay her college fees.

Italian model Raffella Fico, 20, also offered herself for sale through a magazine interview for one million euros.

In 2005 a Peruvian model, also 18, put herself up for sale to help pay her family's medical bills but ended up having second thoughts and turning

Feds' Report Supports Obama's Abstinence Termination

A U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention panel has (surprise!) concluded that abstinence is ineffective, but refuses to substantiate the conclusion with facts.

UPDATE 11/26/09: Still waiting for CDC to disclose data

-- From "Findings inconclusive on teaching abstinence" by Rob Stein, Washington Post Staff Writer 11/7/09

Sex-education programs that encourage teens to delay sexual activity and teach them about contraception cut risky sexual behavior, increase condom use and lower the chances of getting the AIDS virus and other infections, a panel of independent experts concluded in a report released Friday.

But there is insufficient evidence to know whether programs that focus on encouraging teens to remain sexually abstinent until marriage are effective, the panel concluded.

The analysis was conducted by a 19-member team of experts assembled by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to examine the politically sensitive question.

The findings come as Congress considers whether to approve President Obama's request to discontinue earmarking funding specifically for abstinence programs and instead allocate funding based on whether scientific research supports the approach.

The findings were welcomed by advocates of programs that reduce teen pregnancy and critics of abstinence programs.

Two members of the CDC team issued a dissenting report disputing the findings. They argued, among other things, that the analysis actually shows that comprehensive sexual-education programs in schools do not significantly increase teen condom use, reduce teen pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases.

"This is an important finding because the school classroom is where most teens receive sex education," said Irene Erickson of the Institute for Research and Evaluation, who issued the dissenting report with Danielle Ruedt of the Georgia Governor's Office of Children and Families. "Furthermore, the data indicated that many types of [comprehensive] programs do not work, even in non-school settings, yet the recommendations do not identify what those are. Unfortunately, the report's conclusion that comprehensive sex-education programs are broadly effective simply ignores these findings. This is misleading to policymakers who are seeking evidence-based programs, especially for schools."

From "CDC Task Force Says Sex Ed Better Than Abstinence Ed But Won’t Release Full Data to Public" by Penny Starr, CNSNews Senior Staff Writer, 11/16/09

The 15-member Task Force on Community Preventive Services and four other experts made up the team, which analyzed dozens of studies of sex education programs conducted between 1980 and 2007.

A list of the studies is available on the Community Guide portion of the CDC Web site, but the task force’s analysis of the studies is not.

Lack of access to that analysis, critics say, prevents an open review of data they contend shows that abstinence programs were underrepresented in the studies used and that using comprehensive sex education programs in school settings did not reduce teen pregnancy, STDs, or increase the use of condoms.

“The Task Force has made public its recommendation statements without also making available to the public the full set of study findings upon which the recommendations are based – both supporting and otherwise,” Irene Ericksen, a member of the review team and researcher with the Institute for Research and Evaluation, said about the recommendations.

“This prevents the public from scrutinizing the body of evidence underlying the CDC Task Force Recommendations in the same time frame in which the CDC recommendations will influence the decisions of policymakers and public health professionals,” she said.

Danielle Ruedt, the public health program coordinator for the Georgia governor’s Office of Children and Families and a member of the task force, said that when used in school settings, the data do not support the task force’s sweeping recommendations.

ObamaCare Means More Teen Sex, Less Abstinence

Liberal sex education "experts" expect Obama and a compliant Congress to stop the Bush-era federal promotion of wholesome living and marriage to students, in favor of sexualization and homosexual indoctrination

-- From "Sex Ed Should Not Promote Only Marriage or Heterosexual Relationships, Advocates Say" by Penny Starr, CNSNews.com Senior Staff Writer 10/16/09

A coalition of liberal sex education advocates says the Obama administration and the Democrat-controlled Congress will end support for abstinence-only programs that emphasize marriage and heterosexual relationships.

“The appropriations bills this year represent the most profound change in national sex education policy that we have ever had in the history of this country,” said William Smith, vice president for education and training with the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS), at an event held Thursday on Capitol Hill.

Martha Kempner, vice president for information and communications with SIECUS, said the sex education programs used over the past eight years in America’s middle and high schools had a pro-marriage agenda.

“It’s six years of marriage promotion,” Kempner said. “You’re going on a journey and basically students are told that the only life goal that is acceptable is heterosexual marriage, and there’s one journey to follow to get there and it requires abstinence until you get there. . . They were still espousing marriage as the only appropriate adult relationship, including inaccurate information … promoting biases against sexual orientation, gender and family structure.”

Virginity pledges, Kempner added, not only don’t keep teens from having sex, but they also unfairly target homosexuals.

“Asking a gay or lesbian teen to sign this in high school is tantamount to asking them to agreeing to a lifetime without sexual behavior,” she said. “These programs are really made -- I would say they are made -- for a heterosexual classroom, but they are really made for a heterosexual world and obviously that’s inappropriate.”

Randall Moody, a lobbyist for the NEA, said the organization and its members support sex education that includes “sexual abstinence, birth control, family planning, diversity of sexual orientation, gender identification, parenting skills, STDs, HIV-AIDS, sexual harassment and abuse and problems associated with and resulting from teenage pregnancy.”

From "How to Lobby Against Sex Ed" by Joe Eaton, Atlantic Online 10/14/09

In late September, the Senate Finance Committee approved an amendment to its health care bill from Utah Republican Orrin Hatch that would reinstate $50 million in annual funding to abstinence-only programs. Earlier this year, President Obama removed funding for the programs from his budget.

. . . A spokeswoman for the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States, which opposes abstinence-only education, said the Hatch amendment was not a surprise. But the spokeswoman, who declined to be identified by name, said she hopes and expects that the amendment will be cut from any final health reform bill before it leaves Congress . . .

22-year-old Student Auctions Virginity

Men bid to pay over $3 million to California woman for "one night stand" to pay for her graduate degree in Family and Marriage therapy

-- From "Student auctions off virginity for offers of more than £2.5 million" The Telegraph 1/12/09

The student who has a degree in Women's Studies insisted she was not demeaning herself.

Miss Dylan, from San Diego, California, USA, said she was persuaded to offer herself to the highest bidder after her sister Avia, 23, paid for her own degree after working as a prostitute for three weeks.

She said she had had a lot of attention from a wide range of men, including "weirdos", "those who get really graphically sexual about what they want to do to me" and "lots of polite requests from rich businessmen".

She added: "It's shocking that men will pay so much for someone's virginity, which isn't even prized so highly anymore."
