Student Booted for Being Christian: Missouri Univ.

Attorneys for Andrew Cash have filed a federal lawsuit against Missouri State University (MSU) saying that the graduate student was kicked out of a master's counseling program because he said that validating same-sex marriage violated his religious beliefs.
“[Andrew Cash] was targeted and punished for expressing his Christian worldview regarding a hypothetical situation concerning whether he would provide counseling services to a gay/homosexual couple. . . . Since he did not give the ‘correct’ answer required by his counseling instructors, he was considered unsuitable for counseling and terminated from the program.”

-- From "Missouri State student says he was kicked out of school because he wouldn't counsel gay couples" by The Associated Press 4/23/16

Andrew Cash said he was removed from the master's counseling program at Missouri State in 2014 after telling a professor in 2011 he would not counsel gay couples. Cash started the program in 2007.

The Thomas More Society, a Chicago-based public interest law firm, filed the lawsuit Tuesday on behalf of Cash. The lawsuit in federal court in Springfield names the university's board of governors and several school officials as defendants. It claims the university denied Cash's rights to religion and free speech and seeks unspecified monetary and punitive damages.

According to the lawsuit, W. K. Boyce, executive director of the Christian-based counseling center where Cash interned, made a presentation to one of Cash's classes in 2011. In response to a question during that presentation, Boyce said he would counsel gay individuals separately but would refer gay couples to other counselors who did not share his religious beliefs.

About a week later, Cash's internship coordinator questioned Cash about his own views on counseling gay couples, the lawsuit said. Cash said he also would counsel gay people individually but refer them to someone else for couple counseling.

The lawsuit says Cash was a student at MSU in January 2011 when he began an internship at the Springfield Marriage and Family Institute, a Christian-based organization.

Cash told his internship coordinator, Kristi Perryman, that he would also not counsel gay couples, according to the lawsuit, and Perryman told Cash that went against the American Counseling Association's code of ethics.

The lawsuit says Perryman told Cash he was not allowed to continue his internship at the Springfield Marriage and Family institute because of "ethical concerns."

In November 2014, the lawsuit says, Cash was removed from the master's program. The lawsuit says he had a 3.81 GPA.

From "Student Sues MSU" by John Thomas, KTTS-FM94.7 (Springfield, MO) 4/22/16

Andrew Cash claims the University is violating its mission of being a place for free exchange of ideas and values, both religious and secular.

"Traditionally, universities have been places for free exchange of ideas and values, both religious and secular," said Thomas Olp, Executive Director and Attorney for the Thomas More Society. "Unfortunately, Missouri State University departed from its mission by denying educational opportunity to Mr. Cash simply because he expressed, in an academic setting, sincerely-held religious beliefs which his advisor deemed hostile to her own and therefore unacceptable.

"An educator should not permit her own ideology and agenda to ruin the educational opportunities of her students. We feel the responsibility, on Mr. Cash's behalf, to try to correct this."

Emily Brooker sued the university in 2006, accusing the school and a faculty member of violating her First Amendment rights when she refused to sign a letter supporting same-sex adoption. Brooker was a student in the School of Social Work.

Brooker alleged in her lawsuit that faculty members interrogated her for over two hours and asked her questions such as: “Do you think gays and lesbians are sinners?” and “Do you think I am a sinner?”

Brooker made national headlines before reaching a settlement with the university.

David Kaplan, the chief professional officer of the American Counseling Association, said students in other states have filed lawsuits against schools when they felt their religious beliefs came in conflict with the professional association's code.

From "Student files suit against MSU after being dismissed from counseling program due to his faith" posted at Houston (Missouri) Herald 4/27/16

. . . [Cash's] suit claims that he was unable to complete his counseling curriculum, and is now prevented from working as a counselor, causing him daily emotional suffering. He is seeking for MSU to reinstate him in his counseling program with safeguards put in place so that he can successfully earn his degree.

As a part of the degree program, students are required to complete clinical internship hours. Cash started his internship in January 2011 with the Springfield Marriage and Family Institute, which had been approved by MSU as an internship site. At least one other student in the M.S. in Counseling program had previously completed an internship there. The Institute is a Christian-based counseling agency, and MSU knew this when it approved Cash's internship in January 2011.

. . . Although Cash worked with the administration to find a different internship, the faculty advisor required him, as a condition of being re-accepted to a new internship, to prove to her that he "had learned something from the experience at the Springfield Marriage and Family Institute."  Later, the same advisor wrote a letter to department officials claiming that it appeared to her – despite a total lack of evidence – that she suspected that Cash had not recanted from his earlier-stated religious views. She then made a recommendation, which was accepted, to force Cash into "remediation."

Obama Plans to Ban Evangelism to 'Homosexual Kids'

Days after President Obama's fundraising speech at the Democratic National Committee’s “LGBT Gala,” his administration released “Ending Conversion Therapy: Supporting and Affirming LGBTQ Youth,” a report calling for a ban on Christians responding to the cry of children struggling with same-sex attraction who seek the companionship of Jesus Christ in a desperate attempt to live a godly life. Rather, Obama's bureaucrats call for adults to support and guide troubled children in their homosexual lifestyle.

-- From "U.S. report calls for end to 'conversion therapy' for LGBT youth" by Andrew M. Seaman, Reuters Health 10/15/15

The report released today by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) comes less than a year after the Obama administration endorsed efforts to ban the practice, which aims to change a person’s sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.

. . . the report says, these youngsters should “be supported in their right to explore, define, and articulate their own identity.”

Variations in sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression are normal, [SAMHSA Special Expert on LGBT Affairs, Elliot] Kennedy told Reuters Health.

Many practitioners of conversion therapy are unlicensed, and many have religious training rather than medical training, said Dr. Jack Drescher, an expert on LGBT mental health and a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst in New York City who was not involved with the report.

From "SAMHSA report shows conversion therapy not appropriate for minors, offers methods to support LGBTQ and gender non-conforming children" posted at the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration 10/15/15

This report includes the first publication of consensus statements developed by an expert panel held by the American Psychological Association in July 2015. . . . Through a collaborative process, this panel found that variations in sexual orientation and gender identity are normal, and that conversion therapies or other efforts to change sexual orientation or gender identity are not effective, are harmful, and are not appropriate therapeutic practices.  The report provides an overview of existing efforts to eliminate the practice of conversion therapy.

The information and resources contained within the report include a review of the research in this area, detailed information on supportive therapeutic approaches, areas of opportunity for future research, existing strategies to end the practice of conversion therapy, and targeted guidance for various audiences.

These materials help providers, families, and care-givers support their LGBTQ and gender non-conforming children and adolescents.  They also illuminate practices that may contribute to the health disparities facing LGBTQ youth, which should be avoided.

From "Obama’s move to ban gay conversion therapy, explained" by Aaron Blake, Washington Post 4/9/15

The move comes in response to a petition on the White House Web site that has been signed by more than 120,000 people. . . .

The Greenberg Quinlan Rosner poll showed 24 percent of the respondants thought gay people could be turned straight either through therapy or prayer, while 69 percent disagreed.

For what it's worth, though, the question was about the efficacy of the treatment, and not its appropriateness. People could think the treatment doesn't work and that it should still be legal, and vice versa.

All of which is to say there are likely to be people who defend gay conversion therapy and view the White House's move as an incursion into religious rights. But if these numbers and the current religious freedom debate are any indication, the White House is holding the cards here.

From "Obama Calls for End to ‘Conversion’ Therapies for Gay and Transgender Youth" by Michael D. Shear, New York Times 4/9/15

Therapists who advocate the use of the gender identity therapies promote them as a way of helping gay people change their sexual orientation. Those therapists reject claims that sexual orientation or identity is unchangeable and argue that gay or transgender identities should be reversed so that people can embrace their “authentic” heterosexual selves.

David Pickup, a licensed family therapist in California and Texas, said in an interview on Wednesday that the president and gay rights advocates were purposely misconstruing the work that he and others do. He said that minors should never be forced into therapy, but he insisted that being gay was often brought about by serious emotional problems or sexual abuse.

“We believe that change is still possible. People go to therapy because they can change, because it really does work,” Mr. Pickup said. “We help people grow into their authentic selves.”

RINO Illinois Gov. Favors Homosexuals over Kids

The Gay Agenda recruitment of children into the homosexual lifestyle got a boost yesterday as newly elected Republican Governor Bruce Rauner signed a bill sponsored by homosexualists in the Democrat-controlled legislature to outlaw professionals counseling children who seek help to counter unwanted homosexual attraction and/or gender confusion.  The new law is expected to be used in lawsuits to target religious pastoral care.

Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner signed a bill into law banning the practice in the state Thursday afternoon, making it the fifth jurisdiction—after California, New Jersey, Washington D.C., and Oregon—to have done so.

The American Psychological Association has concluded that attempts to change a person’s sexual orientation through behavioral therapy does not work, and many people who have been through such programs testify to the psychological damage it can cause. President Obama has called for an end to the practice, citing its “devastating effects.”

The Illinois law goes into effect on January 1, 2016.

The Republican approved the "gay conversion therapy" ban Thursday. His office didn't immediately offer a statement.

The measure keeps therapists from trying to change the sexual orientation or gender identity of a person younger than 18. Providers who don't comply could face disciplinary action.

Supporters of the measure have argued conversion therapy has been discredited and can be harmful to young people. But opponents have questioned whether therapists would be punished unfairly and say a ban limits parents' treatment decisions.

Backers of the measure were unsure how Rauner, a first-term Republican who has kept his stance on several social issues private, would act. Rauner has refused to discuss his views on same-sex marriage.

After announcing the bill's signing, spokeswoman Catherine Kelly said Rauner has no social agenda and believes the measure protects the children's interests.

[Chicago lesbian Rep. Kelly] Cassidy has said Rauner met with a "survivor" of such therapy and appeared moved by what he heard.

The measure also adds the therapy to the Illinois Consumer Fraud Act, giving people more ability to take legal action. Cassidy has contended that provision makes Illinois' ban stronger than other states.

Booting Navy Chaplain Submarined by Homosexual Spy

Chaplain Lt. Cmdr. Wes Modder is facing possible expulsion after a same-sex "married" homosexual Navy officer landed an assignment as Modder's assistant in November and documented the Chaplain's Biblical Christian beliefs, which the Navy has now deemed unfit for the “diverse and pluralistic environment” of President Obama's new military.
“This new generation [of the military] is very secular and very open sexually. The values that the military once held – just like the Boy Scouts of America – are changing. The culture wants this. Culture is colliding with truth. That’s at the heart of this. . . . I need to stand up for righteousness and this is something I cannot walk away from.”

The Liberty Institute says Chaplain Wes Modder (MAH’-der), an ordained Assemblies of God minister, has received decorations and was called “the best of the best” by the commander [Capt. Jon R. Fahs] now seeking to administer discipline. Modder is based at South Carolina’s U.S. Navy Joint Base Charleston Goose Creek.

Liberty Institute attorney Mike Berry says the range of punishment Modder faces could be career ending. Modder is eligible for a 20-year retirement in September.

According to Berry, the Navy has requested that Modder be barred from promotion, fired from his job as chaplain, and brought before a military Board of Inquiry, where he could be forced out of the Navy.

From "Chaplain Accused Of Intolerance, May Be Booted From Navy" by Jonah Bennett, Reporter, Daily Caller News Foundation 3/9/15

. . . in December, Equal Opportunity representatives paid Modder a visit, delivering a five-page complaint, which detailed concerns about Modder’s views on marriage, pre-marital sex and masturbation, among other things. Modder was immediately removed from duties, with no defense allowed.

Berry has decided to take up the case and represent the chaplain. Both believe the charges are bogus, and in fact, Berry stated that the officer who accused Modder may be held criminally liable for making false statements and abusing his position.

The whole debacle reminded Modder of an incident which occurred when he first arrived at the Naval Nuclear Power Training Command in South Carolina and was preparing to deliver a speech at a graduation ceremony.

According to Modder, the captain quickly pulled him aside, “looked at [him] and said, ‘Hey chaplain – do not pray in Jesus’ name.’”

From "Former SEALs chaplain could be kicked out of Navy for Christian beliefs" by Todd Starnes, FoxNews.com 3/9/15

“On multiple occasions he discriminated against students who were of different faiths and backgrounds,” the Chaplain’s commanding Officer Capt. Jon R. Fahs wrote in a memorandum obtained by Fox News.

“They want chaplains to be glorified summer camp counselors and not speak truth and love into people’s lives,” Berry told me. “There are some anti-religious elements in our military. Anytime somebody wants to live their faith out – there are people who say that is offensive.”

Modder said the young officer [spy] had only been working with him for about a month and would constantly pepper him with questions pertaining to homosexuality. He had no idea that the officer was in fact gay – and married to another man.

“His five page letter of complaint was unconscionable,” Modder said. “He said I had a behavioral pattern of being anti-discriminatory of same sex orientation.”

“I believe some of what the lieutenant [spy] has alleged could constitute a military crime – false statements – taking what the chaplain said and twisting or misconstruing it – in an attempt to get the chaplain punished,” [Berry] said. “He abused the position he was placed in as a chaplain’s assistant.”

He believes the officer may have gained access to private counseling file[s].

. . . The Navy has requested that Modder be barred from promotion, fired from his job as chaplain, and brought before a military Board of Inquiry, where he could be forced out of the Navy. Modder is only months away from his twentieth anniversary of active military service.

Modder previously served as the Force chaplain for Naval Special Warfare Command. He has deployed overseas multiple times during the War on Terror, including in support of DEVGRU and other SEAL teams in high-profile operations around the globe. He has received the highest possible ratings by his former commanders, who have commanded DEVGRU, SEAL Teams, and Naval Special Warfare Command.

In its response letter, Liberty Institute attorneys assert that censoring Chaplain Modder's religious expression is unconstitutional religious discrimination. They note that federal law and military regulations forbid the Navy from punishing a chaplain because they act according to their faith. Liberty Institute also requests that the Navy allow Chaplain Modder to return to serving his sailors according to his faith.

Google Bans Pro-life Ads, as Abortionists Demand

The Internet giant Google has acted as judge, jury, and executioner (literally) in the case of NARAL (National Abortion Rights Action League) accusing crisis pregnancy centers of false advertising.  NARAL has even criticized a pro-life counselor for declaring that God exists.  Google agreed that anyone searching for abortion clinics shouldn't be presented with a list of pro-lifers.

According to the advocacy group [NARAL], which presented its findings to Google after monitoring the ads, the crisis pregnancy centers intentionally used false and misleading language on ads that appeared when users searched for "abortion clinic."

Google policy states that advertisements must be "factually supportable," as well as truthful and accurate. Advertisers who do not comply with Google policies may see their ads rejected or their domains disabled or accounts suspended.

Google said in a statement that it had applied its ad policy standards in this case and followed normal company procedures. . . . "If we find violations, we'll take the appropriate actions — including account disablings and blacklists — as quickly as possible."

[Google] has taken a guarded approach to blocking content from its search pages. In this case, however, NARAL was able to demonstrate that the ads directly violated Google's own policies, [NARAL President Ilyse] Hogue said.

Bowing to pressure from abortion-rights groups, Google is removing advertisements from its site for “crisis pregnancy centers” that discourage people from having abortions.

According to NARAL, people using Google to search for “abortion clinics” got ads advertising the crisis centers about 79 percent of the time.

NARAL logged a series of complaints with Google about ads that it claimed were deceptive, and spent the last month urging the company to take action. According to NARAL, more than two-thirds of the ads it passed along to Google were removed.

Among those were ads linked to groups that, NARAL said, openly acknowledge their intent to urge people not to have abortions.

-- From "Academy's Hiring of Anti-gay Author Draws Ire" by Leo Shane III, Stars and Stripes 11/21/13

Gay rights advocates are demanding Air Force Academy officials explain why they hired a controversial anti-gay author as part of their ethics program, saying his views are offensive and potentially destructive.

Mike Rosebush, who now works as a research analyst for the academy's Center of Character and Leadership Development, was hired by the academy in 2009, before the military's "don't ask, don't tell" law was repealed.

The same year, he published "Sanctification Coaching: Sexual Purity and Peace for Christian Men with Same-Sex Attractions." The book advocates using Christian teachings and prayer to overcome "wicked desires" like homosexual urges, and charts Rosebush's own "struggles" to turn away from a gay lifestyle.

Before that, Rosebush was an active leader and speaker at numerous "conversion therapy" organizations, which maintain that same-sex urges can be overcome through discipline and prayer.

Rosebush has actually spent a good share of his career at the academy. After graduating from there in 1975, he taught a core psychology course on campus from 1982 to 1985, the academy says via email. In 1989, he completed a doctorate in counseling psychology from the University of North Carolina, which included a dissertation titled, "Behavioral observation scale for a subordinate appraisal of supervisory performance at the U.S. Air Force Academy."

He then returned to the academy from 1988 to 1992, teaching courses on leadership and marriage and family. He was named an "outstanding instructor" during that time, the academy reports.

In 1990, he became a Licensed Professional Counselor in Colorado; he would often practice over the phone. In 1995, he retired from the military and joined Focus on the Family, the Colorado Springs-based Christian organization notorious for LGBT intolerance.

During 10 years there, he was a vice president and directed a college program in the Focus on the Family Institute, according to biographies issued by the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuals (NARTH) and the website strengthinweakness.org.

In a statement, the academy said Rosebush “does not and will not evaluate or counsel cadets,” and “has had no interaction with cadets at any time since he was hired in 2009.” Rosebush last interacted with cadets during his previous employment at the academy, which went from 1988 to 1992. During that period, Rosebush worked in the academy’s directorate of education and taught a course on marriage and family and a behavioral science core leadership course, and he won an outstanding instructor award, the academy said.

He also was named the Cadet Wing “civilian of the year” by the commandant of cadets in 2011.

Increase NY Abortions, Promises Mayor De Blasio

The just-elected New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, a self-described “democratic socialist,” says that there are too few abortion clinics in the city, and so he has pledged to partner with abortionists, including Planned Parenthood, to open more clinics at taxpayer expense.  In conjunction, de Blasio says he intends to put pro-life pregnancy counselors out of business.

In addition, he will continue New York City’s appeal of a judge’s order overturning New York’s local law to regulate sham crisis pregnancy centers, and if the law is ultimately struck down, he will work to craft new regulations to prevent these centers from masquerading as legitimate healthcare providers. Furthermore, Bill de Blasio will work with non-profit providers to identify neighborhoods underserved by reproductive health services and work with them to identify space in city sponsored development. De Blasio will also continue the Bloomberg administration’s groundbreaking abortion training initiative for medical residents at all HHC hospitals.

De Blasio calls crisis pregnancy centers “sham” clinics. In his view, their refusal to perform abortions means they do not offer “legitimate health care.”

To ensure there are enough abortionists to meet the city’s high demand, and fuel further expansion, de Blasio says he will continue to force doctors who train in city hospitals to perform abortions as a routine part of their training, a NARAL-backed program that started under outgoing mayor Michael Bloomberg, and which de Blasio called “groundbreaking.”

Another key part of de Blasio’s plan to build up the abortion industry in his city is to make sure women can pay for the procedure. To that end, he has promised to use ObamaCare to expand state-funded abortion coverage to more New York City women.

Gov. Chris Christie signed a bill Monday barring licensed therapists from trying to turn gay teenagers straight, making New Jersey the second state to ban so-called conversion therapy, along with California.

The bill passed both houses of the New Jersey Legislature with bipartisan support in June. Assemblyman Tim Eustace, who sponsored the bill and is openly gay, described the therapy as "an insidious form of child abuse."

In a note accompanying the bill, Christie said he believes people are born gay and that homosexuality is not a sin. That view is inconsistent with his Catholic faith, which teaches that homosexual acts are sins.

From "Chris Christie signs N.J. bill banning gay conversion therapy" by Tina Susman, Los Angeles Times 8/19/13

The anti-conversion therapy bill, A-3371, declares that being “lesbian, gay or bisexual is not a disease, disorder, illness, deficiency or shortcoming,” and it bans licensed therapists from providing gay-to-straight conversion therapy to children under age 18.

John Tomicki of the conservative League of American Families has called the bill unconstitutional and vowed in June, after its passage, that opponents would sue to prevent it from taking effect.

A lawsuit prevented California’s ban on conversion therapy for minors from taking effect as scheduled at the start of this year, and the legislation remains on hold. A three-judge panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals agreed last December to block the law pending a decision on its constitutionality. Opponents have argued that it violates free speech rights.

From "Chris Christie to Sign Gay Therapy Ban; Believes Homosexuality Is Not a Sin" by Stoyan Zaimov, Christian Post Reporter, 8/19/13

Dr. David Pruden, vice president of Operations for the National Association for Research & Therapy of Homosexuality, previously told The Christian Post that there is a great deal of misinformation when it comes to gay therapy.

"This hate and misinformation campaign aimed at 'change' therapists is just political posturing and does not reflect the actual experience of individuals in therapy. All this fuss about change therapy is being used to promote a political agenda, not the well-being of clients," Dr. Pruden argued.

From "Chris Christie, theologian?" by Phil Lawler, CatholicCulture.org 8/21/13

. . . Two problems here. First, there’s a lively debate as to whether or not a homosexual orientation is established at birth. Christie is entitled to his opinion on that question, but his view carries no special weight; it certainly shouldn’t be the basis for legislation. . . . Second, Christie—who’s intelligent enough to know better—misrepresents the Church teaching. Whether or not a “predisposition to be homosexual” is innate, it’s not the disposition that is sinful; it’s the homosexual acts. The distinction is crucial, because if you understand the Church teaching, you can see the problem with the legislation that Christie approved.

Some people, it seems, are especially susceptible alcohol abuse. The root causes of this predisposition are not well understood. But even without rushing in where psychologists fear to tread, we can say two things. A tendency toward alcoholism is a disorder, not a sin. Yet getting drunk remains sinful—even for those who may have some innate weakness.

Now with that in mind, would anyone suggest barring psychologists from helping people to overcome a tendency toward alcoholism? Let’s hope not; such a ban would be a gross violation of individual freedoms. So is the ban on “reparative therapy.”

While the [above] statute itself was an undeniable win for gay activists, Christie’s willful entry into the fray suggests that 2016 may be the year in which the baton is passed from Democrats to Republicans in terms of an interesting presidential debate on gay rights.

How can [Republicans] possibly reconcile wooing social conservatives in the primary with any shot at winning mainstream America in the general? The public is advancing so quickly on LGBT equality that any serious candidate will have to avoid sounding antiquated – or perhaps even bigoted – in order to have a prayer with unmarried women, independents and the under-30 crowd.

“As a country we can agree to disagree,” [2016 presidential contender Sen. Rand] Paul told an ABC reporter. “As a Republican Party, that’s kind of where we are as well. The party is going to have to agree to disagree on some of these issues.”

That sounds frighteningly close to something Barack Obama might have said as a young senator gearing up for his 2008 presidential bid.

Ex-Gay Ministry Joins Gay Agenda: Christians Wrong

American media are ecstatic: A long-time Christian ministry of former homosexuals, Exodus International, which has preached for decades that faith in Jesus Christ will overcome sinful behavior, is going out of business as the organization's leader, Alan Chambers, in a lengthy apology, announced that churches are wrong to "love the sinner, but hate the sin."
“I am sorry that when I celebrated a person [engaged in homosexual behavior] coming to Christ and surrendering their sexuality to Him, I callously celebrated the end of [such sinful] relationships that broke your heart.”

Alan Chambers said on Exodus International's website Thursday that the group wants to apologize "to the gay community for years of undue suffering and judgment at the hands of the organization and the church as a whole."

Chambers also says he is sorry the group promoted sexual orientation change efforts and apologized for not challenging Christians who called gays names like "sodomite."

Exodus International was founded 37 years ago. It claimed 260 member ministries around the U.S. and internationally.

From "Group That Promoted ‘Curing’ Gays Ceases Operations" by Gerry Mullany, New York Times 6/20/13

The decision by the board of Exodus International to stop operating comes as the group’s president, Alan Chambers, has been increasingly vocal in proclaiming that there was no cure for homosexuality and that therapy did not work in changing a person’s sexual orientation.

The group’s underlying approach toward homosexuality had been that people are not born with such sexual inclinations, but rather choose them, leaving the potential for their being cured. Such thinking has been a rationale among some conservatives and evangelicals for their staunch opposition to same-sex marriage.

But in recent years the group had come under increased criticism as professional associations denounced its focus on reparative therapy to “cure” homosexuality, saying it was not only ineffective but potentially harmful. At the same time, polls have shown an increasing number of Americans more accepting of homosexuality and approving of gay marriage.

“Exodus is an institution in the conservative Christian world, but we’ve ceased to be a living, breathing organism," Alan Chambers, president of the ex-gay organization, posted on its website. “For quite some time we’ve been imprisoned in a worldview that’s neither honoring toward our felow human beings, nor biblical.”

Exodus International’s apology to gay people for causing them years of suffering constitutes a total about-face from the nonprofit’s original mission, its executive vice president [Randy Thomas] confirmed Wednesday.

“Providing help for people to turn from gay to straight is something we’ve distanced ourselves from,” Thomas said.

Chambers lived as a gay teenager and young adult, the Exodus website says, before choosing to pursue Christ over his same-sex attraction (SSA). He is now married and has two children, but he told The Christian Post last year that he still struggles with SSA at times. He also said he doesn't think the idea of curing such attractions through therapy is a biblical message, which is why Exodus has "shied away from it."

"Christians in the body of Christ, we have overemphasized complete resolution and complete change for this issue but not for others ... and I don't think we're telling anybody else with any other type of struggle that they have to ... never be tempted in that area again in order to be a good Christian," he told CP at the time.

To each other for healing, yes; but not to God for forgiveness. How much time will that free up!” (Pure Grace, p. 20). Mr. Thomas, the no. 3 person at Exodus, adds that believers who continue to pray to God “Forgive us our sins” engage in “a self-righteous ritual” and “deny the righteousness of Christ that is already present.”

This statement is just one of what I term “The Seven Pillars of Rev. Whitten’s Wisdom.” Rev. Whitten is the chair of the Exodus Board and Alan Chambers’ and Randy Thomas’s pastor, whom Alan and Randy follow down the doctrinal line. Indeed, Alan Chambers, the President of Exodus, has stated: “To say that I recommend [Clark Whitten’s book Pure Grace] is the understatement of the century.” With Whitten’s book, “God has unveiled something that has been veiled for hundreds and hundreds of years.”

More High-profile Republicans Going Gay Agenda

Joining Ohio's Sen. Rob Portman, who last week said he supports same-sex "marriage" because his son said "I'm gay," is New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie saying that he doesn't believe that homosexuals should be helped if they choose to end deviant sexual behaviors -- Christie is being pressed to support legislation to outlaw such Christian counseling.
"There is no mistaking [Gov. Christie's] point of view on this when you look at his own prior statements where he makes clear that people’s sexual orientation is determined at birth."

-- From "Gov. Christie says he does not believe in gay conversion therapy" by Jenna Portnoy, New Jersey Star-Ledger 3/22/13

Christie’s office pointed to a July 2011 interview to show he fundamentally believes people are born gay. "Well my religion says it’s a sin," Christie told CNN’s Piers Morgan. "I’ve always believed that people are born with the predisposition to be homosexual. And so I think if someone is born that way it’s very difficult to say then that’s a sin."

The Republican governor’s announcement came one day after he said he didn’t know enough about the issue to comment — and hours after Democratic challenger Barbara Buono slammed his indecision as "disgusting" and the Democratic Governors Association, calling Christie "extremist," used it as a way to raise money.

Roberts declined to say why Christie crystallized his opinion overnight, or whether he would sign a bill pending in the Legislature that would ban the practice of trying to "convert" gays to become straight. Christie remains opposed to same-sex marriage.

The bill (S2278), which cleared a state Senate panel Monday with support only from Democrats, would ban licensed counselors from using the therapy. Supporters of the ban say the practice is damaging, while critics say it would interfere with the counselor-patient relationship and intrude on parents’ rights. Only California bans the practice, though the law is being challenged.

From "Conservatives to Portman: Gay ‘Marriage’ Harmful to the People Involved and Society" by Michael James, CNSNews.com 3/21/13

[Sen. Portman wrote] “British Prime Minister David Cameron has said he supports allowing gay couples to marry because he is a conservative, not in spite of it. I feel the same way. We conservatives believe in personal liberty and minimal government interference in people’s lives. We also consider the family unit to be the fundamental building block of society. We should encourage people to make long-term commitments to each other and build families, so as to foster strong, stable communities and promote personal responsibility.”

Family Research Council President Tony Perkins said in a statement that he applauded Portman for loving his son no matter what the circumstances but that he -- as a conservative aware of the social necessity for marriage between a man and a woman -- could not condone Portman’s view about “gay marriage.”

Peter LaBarbera, president of Americans for Truth about Homosexuality . . . said, “I think it would have been a more mature, a more tough-love approach for Senator Portman not to abandon his, essentially, his whole outlook on this very important moral issue of marriage, what marriage is. I think it would have been more mature if he had maintained his love for his son, of course, but not altered his entire worldview to accommodate it.”

New Michigan Law Requires 'Safe' Abortion Clinics

The Michigan Republican legislature and Gov. Rick Snyder have enacted new abortion clinic requirements to improve safety for mothers, but their unborn babies will still die at these "safer" clinics, although the law requires the "fetal remains" to be disposed of "properly and respectfully."
"Republicans should focus on the economy and job creation instead of extreme social policies that further divide our state."

The measure requires health facilities or clinics that perform more than 120 abortions a year to become licensed freestanding surgical outpatient facilities.

The Center for Reproductive Rights, an abortion rights group that opposed the measure, said it could force many existing abortion providers in the state to either tear down their offices and rebuild from the ground up -- or shutter their practices.

"This bill respects a woman's right to choose while helping protect her health and safety, including making sure a pregnant person is not being coerced into a decision," Snyder said.

Patients must undergo counseling with a health professional to make sure they aren't being forced to get an abortion. But a provision was dropped that would have established penalties for individuals trying to force a woman into getting a so-called "coercive" abortion.

Other provisions deal with disposal of fetal remains and require that a doctor perform a physical exam before prescribing drugs that would induce abortion. The exam could not be performed from a distance through use of a web-based camera, a process known as telemedicine, which critics said would impose a hardship on women in rural areas.

From "Michigan Governor Signs Major Pro-Life Bill Stopping Abortions" by Steven Ertelt, LifeNews.com 12/28/12

Currently, only 4 of the 32 abortion facilities in Michigan are licensed by the state and, as such, the other 28 are rarely or if ever inspected by the state health bureau for basic sanitary requirements that are expected of other outpatient surgical facilities in Michigan. The passage of House Bill 5711 will ensure abortion facilities in Michigan meet Bureau of Health Systems standards that pertain to disaster and emergency procedures, medication and medical storage requirements, waste disposal requirements, sanitary procedures and other basic patient care requirements and administrative rules . . .

The licensing and inspection component of the legislation was recently found to have overwhelming support, with 85 percent of respondents to a statewide survey of likely voters approving the provision while 76 percent of Democrat pro-choice women approved the measure.

House Bill 5711 is an omnibus bill combining six introduced pro life bills into one large bill (45 pages).

From "Gov. Snyder Explains His Abortion Bill Decisions" excerpts of Gov. Snyder's letter to Michigan voters 12/28/12

Personally, I am pro-life and against abortion except in cases of rape, incest, and to protect the life or health of the mother. At the same time, it is important to respect women's rights and I acknowledge the Supreme Court's decisions on this issue and that it's a federally protected procedure. . . .

HB5711 was introduced earlier this year. In its initial form, it would have significantly impacted women's rights. Now, though, the bill preserves women's rights while also enacting measures to help ensure their health and safety. . . .

Since becoming governor, there is probably no decision that I have struggled with more or that has weighed on me as heavily. Is my analysis perfect? It is not; but it is one person's attempt to carefully balance an explosive and emotional issue in a thoughtful way. . . .

Bible Wrong on Homosexuality, Says Congresswoman

Pro-abortion Rep. Jackie Speier of California, who claims to be a practicing Catholic, has introduced a resolution in Congress denouncing people seeking psychological help for same-sex attractions because such change is impossible.

As of January, it will be illegal in California for licensed professionals to counsel minors struggling with homosexuality, and adults seeking help must sign waivers acknowledging the futility of such counseling.

In a Capitol Hill news conference Wednesday, Ms. Speier said she was introducing her Stop Harming Our Kids resolution to “bring us some reality checks” about sexuality.

Therapies aimed at helping someone go from gay to straight are “discredited” and “ineffective,” and minors should not be subjected to them, she said.

She added that she will investigate whether taxpayer funds in Medicaid or Tricare, the Pentagon’s health care system, have been used to reimburse therapists offering such counseling.

However, groups that provide sexual-orientation change efforts, teenage clients and people who say they have successfully changed their sexual orientations to become heterosexual are challenging the California law. Two lawsuits have been filed to block the law from taking effect Jan. 1.

At a Washington, D.C. press event Wednesday, November 28 Speier introduced a resolution aimed at stopping "reparative therapy" operations from preying on young gay people.

Both the American Psychiatric Association and the American Psychological Association have raised concerns about the [counseling] efforts, saying there is no sound evidence that the practices work but that there is evidence they can pose significant risks of self-destructive behavior to the client.

[Speier said] "Any effort to change sexual orientation is not medicine, it's quackery, and we should not be supporting it with taxpayer dollars."

Speier said she also hopes her resolution will prompt other states to "take steps to protect minors from efforts that promote or promise to change sexual orientation or gender identity or expression, based on the premise that homosexuality is a mental illness or developmental disorder that can or should be cured."

Most Homosexuals Who Want to Convert Report Change

Just as California government outlaws allowing homosexuals to obtain counseling from psychologists to reduce same-sex attraction, a new survey shows that 55% of those seeking such counseling saw the frequency and intensity of their deviant sexual desires diminish.

The survey was conducted by People Can Change, an international nonprofit organization of men who have successfully transitioned away from unwanted homosexuality who now support others seeking similar change.

The People Can Change survey found other reported outcomes from counseling were:
•53% of respondents said their unwanted homosexual behaviors were reduced or eliminated
•38% said heterosexual attractions emerged or increased
•58% said any remaining homosexual attractions became less troubling
•69% said their self-esteem improved
•69% said their shame diminished
•71% became more self-accepting
•66% felt more at peace
. . . Among respondents who had experienced serious suicidal thoughts at one time, 76% said that as a result of the counseling, those thoughts became either much less (60%) or somewhat less (16%) serious and frequent. In comparison, 11% said their suicidal thoughts increased.
