Sexual Consent for Kindergartners—Calif. Feminists

Teaching kids the skills of sexual consent should start in elementary school, not college, says Alejandra Melgoza, of Take Back the Night at University of California, Santa Barbara, along with other feminists at UC Berkeley and San Diego State University.
“College is too late for people to learn about bodily autonomy and respect.”

To Avoid Rape, Must Videotape — New California Law

-- From "California College Students Call For K-12 Consent Education" by Alexandra Svokos, Huffington Post 12/22/14

California is the only state with a "yes means yes" law for colleges, requiring partners to affirmatively agree to sex. The law has been controversial, showing that consent can be a tricky subject.

"We have to start from very simple things, and that’s how we get to big things," Melgoza said. For example, Melgoza said, traumatic memories of child abuse may be triggered by an unsolicited hug, so students could be taught to greet others appropriately and "acknowledge people's space."

Andra Tharp, a violence prevention health scientist at the [federal government] Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told HuffPost . . . these programs "don’t encourage youth to date, but they give youth the skills to be healthy and safe in relationships when and if they do begin relationships."

Phyllida Burlingame, reproductive justice project director at the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California, told HuffPost that "sex education in California schools has a focus on healthy relationships and building communication and decision-making skills. This will help young people at whatever age they become sexually active."

From "Student activists demand California teach sexual consent to kindergartners" by Kaitlyn Schallhorn, Campus Reform 12/26/14

"I think kindergarten is too young for that," Aaron Fulcher, a third-year biological science major at UC Santa Barbara told Campus Reform. "Kids that age shouldn't be exposed to material like that."

"A lot of sex ed can be either biased or incorrect, so with that kind of misinformation, it could be pretty damaging to a seven-year-old and their views on sex and relationships later in life," Fulcher said.

Earlier this month the Department of Justice released a new report on sexual assault which showed that college students are less likely to become victims of sexual assault than non-students. The Bureau of Justice Statistics report also claimed that 6.1 per 1,000 students are victims of sexual assault, debunking the widely quoted 1-in-5 statistic activists previously referenced.

Homosexual Predator, Honored by Obama, Arrested

Teenager Caleb Michael Laieski, an advisor to the mayor of Phoenix in his advocacy of "gay rights," has been indicted for 13 counts of felony sex crimes with a 14-year-old boy.  Laieski, who was honored at a White House "gay pride" event for his anti-bullying advocacy, was himself the victim of a 43-year-old openly homosexual Phoenix police detective who was arrested in August 2012 for sex crimes against boys.
"As you know, Phoenix is ranked as one of the very best cities in the country in terms of LGBT friendliness. I think it's great for business, and we're very proud of that."
-- Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton

The [crimes] came to light this week when former Phoenix Police Officer Chris Wilson was charged with performing sex acts on two underage boys. Laieski was allegedly one of those boys. His attorney claims that both Laieski and the other boy were, in fact, Wilson's victims.

"It would be inappropriate for our office to comment on what is an ongoing and very serious criminal matter," the statement [from the Mayor's office] read. "The victims in this case deserve justice, and we have full confidence that the legal system will handle it in an appropriate manner."

Laieski gained national attention in 2011 when he appeared in a documentary about bullying and discussed issues involving gay youth with both President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden.

From "Anti-bullying activist indicted in sex abuse" by Dustin Gardiner, The Arizona Republic 11/19/13

Laieski has pleaded not guilty. His attorney, Cary Lackey, said Laieski and the other boy were in fact the underage victims of a Phoenix police officer.

Former officer Chris J. Wilson was indicted last year on 10 counts of sexual conduct with a minor stemming from allegations he performed sex acts on a 14-year-old and a 17-year-old and participated in a sexual act with the two together at the older boy’s apartment, according to court documents.

In court filings, Laieski says the charges against him arise from a “consensual relationship he had with a 14-year-old when he himself was 16-years-old, or at most, 17-years-old.”

Under state law, a minor who engages in intercourse or oral sex with another minor 14 or younger can be found guilty of a sex crime. Children under age 15 cannot legally consent to sexual activity, even if their partner is also a minor.

From "Caleb Laieski, Prominent LGBT Advocate, Charged with Sex Crimes" by Matthew Hendley, Phoenix New Times 11/18/13

Wilson, who resigned from the police department because of his impending arrest in the case, met the boys while he served on the PPD's Community Response Squad as a liaison officer to the LGBT community.

Wilson was politically connected, and as explained in a December 2012 New Times story by Monica Alonzo, Wilson's supervisor, Phoenix police Sergeant Mark Schweikert, alleged that Phoenix Councilman Tom Simplot and Assistant Police Chief Tracy Montgomery -- who are both openly gay -- were "influencing" how he supervised Wilson.

The 14-year-old boy, who's also emerged as a prominent young activist against anti-gay bullying, had told his parents about his alleged relationships with Laieski and Wilson, and his parents relayed that information to police.

Caleb Laieski, now 18, was 17 at the time of the alleged abuse. His alleged victim, a close friend he met on TrevorSpace (a social media site for children and young adults aged 13-24 who have an interest in homosexuality), was only 14 at the time. The younger boy said the sex was consensual, but that he felt “pressured” to participate. However, Arizona law says no one younger than 15 is capable of giving consent.

Laieski rose to national prominence after he and a 35-year-old friend, Casey Cameron, sent e-mails to 5,000 Arizona schools in 2011 demanding special protections for gay students and threatening legal action if they failed to bring their policies in line with his demands. The teen then dropped out of high school, got his GED, and traveled to Washington, D.C., to lobby for the Student Non-Discrimination Act.

In 2012, Laieski was given a position in Mayor Stanton’s office as a “youth and diversity liaison,” advising the mayor on matters of policy having to do with youth, particularly gay youth. He was an “advocate on loan,” meaning his salary was funded by an outside group, called “One in Ten.”

According to police records, part of his job was to represent the mayor’s office at local homosexual protests, which is how he got to know Wilson, who was usually assigned as the officer in charge of policing such events.

Gay Pedophile Teacher Defended by Michigan School

Citizens of the rural northern Michigan West Branch-Rose City school district are outraged that many teachers and a board member showed public support for former Rose City Middle School teacher Neal Erickson who was convicted of first-degree criminal sexual assault of a 14-year-old boy over a 3-year period.  As protesting parents are pulling their children from the district, Erickson's supporters stand by their statements, including that his sentencing was harsh because the molestation was homosexual, not heterosexual.
“I’m appalled and ashamed that the [teacher] community could rally around, in this case, you.  What you did was a jab in the eye with a sharp stick to every parent who trusts a teacher.”

-- From "Student exodus in Michigan school district where teachers defended child molester" by Perry Chiaramonte, FoxNews.com 9/12/13

The student body count in the West Branch-Rose City district, in northeast Michigan is down unofficially some 87 students following a tumultuous summer in which angry parents blasted seven teachers for writing letters in support of former teacher Neal Erickson. The letters urged a judge to be lenient in sentencing Erickson, who admitted to sexual misconduct with an underage, male student from 2006 to 2009. When the school board declined to take action against the teachers, many parents vowed to pull their kids out of the public schools, which have a total enrollment of just over 2,000.

Erickson, 38, was originally investigated last October once allegations that he sexually molested the then 14-year-old boy surfaced and was eventually arrested in December 2012. Erickson pleaded guilty May 8, and asked for a lenient sentence, citing "stress" and financial hardship for his family.

Although his attorney contended that the victim, who was 14 years old when the sexual incidents began, did not suffer severe psychological damage, the boy's family has said the incident left him depressed and angry.

Prosecutor LaDonna A. Schultz said Neal Haviland Erickson, of West Branch, engaged in sex acts with a male student over the age of 13, but under the age of 16. The student was enrolled at the school where Erickson taught.

According to Schultz, the three CSC charges against Erickson are for allegedly engaging in oral sex.

In addition to the criminal sex charges, Erickson's other charges include a count of distributing sexually explicit, visual or verbal material to a minor, a count of possessing child sexually abusive material and using a computer to commit a crime.

Police began investigating Erickson in October, Schultz said.

"It originally came in as an investigation into sexually explicit photos of a minor," she said. "They were looking into the child pornography and discovered an inappropriate relationship between a teacher and a student."

Records indicate Erickson was hired by West Branch-Rose City Area Schools in 1996.

From "Sick teachers beg judge for leniency for pedophile colleague" by Eric Owens, Education Editor, Daily Caller 8/7/13

Residents in a speck of a rural farm town in northern Michigan want to recall a school board member and fire several teachers who showed support for a local middle school teacher convicted of having sexual relations with an eighth-grade student.

The male [student], who is now a 21-year-old student at Western Michigan University, told police that he and the pedophile teacher had a homosexual relationship in 2006.

There were about 10 encounters. They involved oral sex, reports WSMH FOX 66. They occurred at the teacher’s house.

Prior to his sentencing, six current teachers and two retired ones penned letters to the presiding judge seeking leniency for their child-molesting colleague. The group — along with board member Michael Eagan — also sat with Erickson’s relatives during his sentencing hearing.

The letters painted a flattering picture of the convicted pedophile.

From "Victim’s parents speaking out against WB-RC board member, teachers" by Eric Young, Ogemaw County Herald 7/19/13

When John and Lori Janczewski attended the sentencing for former Rose City teacher Neal Erickson July 10 who pleaded guilty to first degree CSC against their son, they thought they would finally receive some closure.

But at that sentencing, they found several current West Branch-Rose City teachers, as well as a current board member [Mike Eagan], seemingly showing their support of Erickson. And it was there they also learned of 10 letters supporting him that were given to Judge Michael Baumgartner, several of which were written by current teachers in the district.

The Herald, through the Freedom of Information Act, obtained the letters of support for Erickson, written by Toni Erickson, Carol Rau, Sally Campbell, Amy Huber Eagan, Harriett Coe, Marilyn Glover, Sandi Lee, Kathryn Weber, Kathleen Sheel and Kathleen Palmer. Most asked for a reduced sentence.

“Neal made a mistake,” writes Campbell in her letter. “He allowed a mutual friendship to develop into much more. He realized his mistake and ended it years before someone anonymously sent something to the authorities which began this legal process.”

“I am asking that Neal be given the absolute minimum sentence, considering all the circumstances surrounding this case,” writes Amy Huber Eagan.

“Neal has plead (sic) guilty for his one criminal offense but he is not a predator,” writes Coe. “This was an isolated incident.”

From "Recall language filed against Eagan for third time" by Eric Young, Ogemaw County Herald 9/6/13

Prior recall language against Eagan filed by John Janczewski was rejected Aug. 6 and Aug. 27.

Lori Janczewski states that her reason for wanting to recall Eagan is because of his support for the teachers who wrote the letters.

“We the people of Ogemaw County, wish to recall Mike Eagan, an elected school board official,” the recall language states. “He publicly supported the teachers who wrote letters requesting leniency for Neal Erickson, a teacher and convicted pedophile, who sexually assaulted a student.”

From "WB-RC chooses not to fire teachers who wrote leniency letters for Erickson" by Eric Young, Ogemaw County Herald 8/20/13

The West Branch-Rose City school board voted 4-2 Aug. 19 to require ethics training for the entire staff of the district, and to attempt to accommodate requests from parents who do not want their children in the teachers’ classrooms.

After the meeting, Bachelder told the Herald he voted no because he didn’t think the recommendations were “stiff enough.” Beasley did not comment.

“As a board, we have examined all sides of this issue and there are no easy answers,” he said. “We believe the letters written by the teachers may be protected under first amendment rights and that any disciplinary action will subject us to expensive, and potentially lengthy, lawsuits. Our students are our foremost concern and the board is not willing to mortgage the future education of the students of this district by becoming embroiled in a first amendment lawsuit.”

Many community members packed the auditorium at Ogemaw Heights High School for the meeting, most speaking out against the teachers, while a few spoke in their defense.

From "Child Rapists and Other Well-Meaning Liberals" by Jeannie DeAngelis, American Thinker 8/19/13

The [teachers'] letters reveal a mindset, a worldview, and a relativistic standpoint that not only endangers schoolchildren, but is also detrimental to America as a whole.

. . . In her letter to the judge on Neal's behalf, [his teacher/wife Toni] Erickson said this:
As for punishment, because I know that is something the community expects, hasn't he been punished enough? He is losing a job he has held for 17 years [during three of which he was raping a child] and losing all future career potential as a teacher.

I have seen many delightful students who have been damaged by horrible events in their lives. While I acknowledge that Neal's conduct with [a victim he found 'delightful'] was wrong, I do not believe [the 14-year-old] was damaged by Neal's action[s].
. . . English teacher Sally Campbell lauded Erickson's kindness toward his victim by his decision to plead guilty.

Fourth grade teacher Marilyn Glover described a 'sexual predator' as rapist who rapes a child more than once, and Kathleen Scheel defined sexual molestation of a child as an "inappropriate relationship."

. . . [Teacher] Scheel argued that Erickson had access to 1,000 children but raped only one, proving that "Our community's children are not at risk of Neal's presence -- he is not a predator."

WI Teachers Face Arrest for Sex Ed

A Wisconsin prosecutor is warning sex education teachers they could face charges if they follow a new state law that allows them to instruct students about proper contraceptive use.

-- From "Juneau County District Attorney Scott Southworth urges schools to drop sex ed, fearing criminal charges await teachers" by Todd Richmond, Associated Press Writer 4/6/10

A letter sent to five school districts by Juneau County Dist. Atty. Scott Southworth said the instruction could amount to contributing to the delinquency of a minor if teachers know students are sexually active. He said the districts should drop sex education until the Legislature repeals the law.

Southworth also argued that teaching contraceptive use encourages sexual behavior among children, which equates to sexual assault because minors can’t legally have sex in Wisconsin.

Wisconsin school districts aren’t required to teach sex education. But the new law, which took effect March 11, lays out requirements for those that do, including teaching the benefits of abstinence, criminal penalties for having underage sex and the benefits and proper use of contraceptives.

Supporters, including groups representing nurses, health departments and the state teacher’s union, maintain the law will help reduce teen pregnancies. Conservative opponents counter that schools should focus on abstinence.

Southworth’s letter said law would convert sex education classes “into a radical program that sexualizes our children as early as kindergarten. This, in turn, will lead to more child sexual assaults.”

U.N. Grants Status to Homosexual-Rights Groups

Opponents fear loss of sovereignty, ties to pedophilia advocates

-- From "U.N. grants status to homosexual-rights groups" by Matt Sanchez © 2008 WorldNetDaily 8/2/08

The U.N. recently accorded two homosexual-rights groups "consultative status," raising opposition from pro-family advocates who see the move as a weakening of national sovereignty that could result in lowering the age of consent for homosexual sex.

U.N. watchdogs also cite homosexual-rights groups' historical alignment with organizations advocating pedophilia.

The U.N.'s Economic and Social Council, the organ facilitating international cooperation on standards-making and problem-solving in economic and social issues, has accepted COC Netherlands and the State Federation of Lesbians, Gays, Transexuals and Bisexuals of Spain.

But members of the Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute accuse homosexual groups of attempting to weaken sovereignty and impose "gay rights" through a "well-coordinated" international stealth campaign tainted by associations with pro-pedophilia groups.

. . . it's clear that none of the pedophile groups consider sex with a minor "abuse." On the NAMBLA [North American Man-Boy Love Association] website, the association calls itself a "voice testifying to the benevolent aspects of man/boy love."

. . . In Canada, Israel, the UK and Australia, homosexual activists consistently have pushed for lowering age of consent laws, to align the homosexual age for consensual sex with that of heterosexuals.

International advocacy coupled with local activism could pressure governments to lower the age.
