School Forbids Cross Dressing at Prom, Media Fume

Principal Patrick Taylor at Carroll High School in Monroe, Louisiana told Claudetteia Love that she would not be permitted to wear a tuxedo to the prom because of the dress code.  After Love announced a prom boycott to local media, the national homosexual media chimed in, and now the school board appears ready to appease critics and allow Love to celebrate her "sexual orientation" as a role model for younger soon-to-be-lesbian girls.
“As school board president, I don’t agree with Carroll banning her from her prom just because of what she wants to wear — that’s discrimination.”

“I told my mom, ‘They’re using me,'” [Claudetteia Love] said. “They put me in all these honors and advanced placement classes so I can take all of these tests and get good grades and better the school, but when it’s time for me to celebrate the fact that I’ve accomplished what I need to accomplish and I’m about to graduate, they don’t want to let me do it, the way I want to.”

The school’s principal, Patrick Taylor, insisted to the newspaper that the tuxedo rule isn’t about sexual orientation, rather just an issue of dress code. Geraldine Jackson, the girl’s mother, said the principal told her that teachers said they would refuse to chaperone the event if the dress code wasn’t enforced. Jackson said he told her that “girls wear dresses and boys wear tuxes, and that’s the way it is.”

From "Gay student to miss prom over no-tux rule" by Barbara Leader, Monroe (Louisiana) News Star 4/3/15

Last year, Love was one of a group of students presented in a Monroe City School Board meeting as part of the school's high achieving medical magnet program. In a school that has a failing school performance score, Love is one of the academic superstars. She will represent the school at the annual Scholars' Banquet, an event for the top students in Ouachita Parish.

Love hadn't intended to take a date to the prom but wanted to attend with a group of friends who have also now chosen not to attend because of the no-tux rule. She says a petition by members of the senior class to change the rule wasn't acted on by faculty.

"There are other girls in lower grades than me, and I want for them when they come up to not to have to feel like they aren't accepted," Love said. "I don't want them to feel like they are less of a person because people don't accept them. There are people in the world that won't accept you but they don't have to be so judgmental and make you feel like you're less of a person and that you shouldn't express yourself."

“It feels really good because when I was younger I looked up to Jeffree Star,” a transgender singer-songwriter, Tubman said.

“It’s great that other kids might hear about this and feel more comfortable with who they are,” she added.

Now, she says, “I’d tell other kids struggling with gender identity to express themselves however they want.”

School Committee Chairwoman Sara Cederholm said Tubman being elected prom queen shows the culture of acceptance that has evolved in the school system.

Cody’s mother and sister use male pronouns when talking about her, but Cody said she prefers people use female ones.

[Cody] said she hopes to start hormone therapy to lower her testosterone levels, but for now she doesn’t plan on having a sex-change operation.

Indiana School Prom Without Deviant Sex Criticized

In response to pressure to welcome "gay couples" at school, a group of students, parents and teachers met at a church in Sullivan, Indiana to plan an independent and unofficial prom that would not allow overt homosexual behavior, which caused the media and political correctness police to cry foul saying that citizens can't be allowed to have non-school events, open to the public, based on Christian values.
Dale Wise, the church's senior minister at Sullivan First Christian Church, said his church turned off its fax machine and took its website offline Tuesday because both were the target of hate mail and pornographic messages.

-- From "Indiana High Schoolers Push to Ban Gay Classmates from ‘Traditional’ Prom" by Kayla Webley, Time Magazine 2/11/13

The group met on Sunday at the town’s First Christian Church to discuss the possibility of holding a separate, segregated dance after the principal of Sullivan High, David Springer, told a local NBC affiliate that “Anybody can go to the prom” when asked to clarify whether same-sex couples would be allowed to walk in the event’s grand march, set to be held April 27.

According to WTWO, one member of the group is a local special-education teacher, Diana Medley, who told the NBC affiliate, “I believe [homosexuality] is a choice. I don’t believe they were born that way. I think that life circumstances made them that way.” She says she works with students who come out to her and cares about them, even though she doesn’t “agree with them.”

The students and parents formed a Facebook page, called 2013 Sullivan Traditional Prom, to support their cause. . . . Some of the comments defended the group’s mission (“We would like to stress to everyone that this is not a hate group. We do not hate anyone, we are not judging anyone. We are choosing to stand on the word of God”), while others urged supporters to stand together (“With all the media and stuff going on now, let us keep in mind that we are to be loving to all and to be in prayer so satan doesn’t get in to divide”).

From "Plan for prom barring gays rocks small Indiana community" by Pamela Engel, Associated Press 2/15/13

[Comments in support of an independent prom by Diana] Medley, a special education teacher in a neighboring school district, have gone viral and sparked online campaigns to have her fired. A petition on Change.org calling for her dismissal had generated more than 17,500 signatures from as far away as the United Kingdom as of Thursday, and a Facebook page supporting a prom that includes all students had more than 27,000 likes.

"We are conservative around here. That's just the way of this town," said Nancy Woodard, 60, who owns the Hidden Treasure Exchange store. "In any town in this county, you'll find four or five churches no matter how small the town. ... The Bible is a big belief system here.

"Everybody has jumped on this little town. To me, there isn't any need for it," she said.

Sullivan High School Principal David Springer said talk of the "traditional" prom began in January, after a student began circulating a petition demanding that gays be allowed to participate in the grand march at Sullivan's April 27 prom. The "traditional" prom would not be sanctioned by the district and wouldn't be held at the school.

Mark Baker, superintendent in Northeast School Corp., where Medley is employed, did not respond to calls or emails.

The school corporation did, however, release a statement in response to the original story.

"I would like to clearly state the Northeast School Corporation has never denied any student the right to attend prom or any other Northeast School Corporation-sponsored event due to their race, gender or sexual orientation," the statement reads in part. From "Missouri district to allow same-sex couples at prom" posted at Kansas City Star 2/15/13

A southern Missouri school district has rescinded a policy that prohibited same-sex couples from attending prom. It happened a day after a national anti-discrimination group threatened to sue.

Scott County Central School District superintendent Alvin McFerren said Friday that the school board agreed to revise a district handbook policy that had been interpreted to prohibit same-sex dates. McFerren said the policy was adopted 10 to 15 years ago for an innocent reason and was never meant to discriminate.

The Southern Poverty Law Center on Thursday threatened legal action on behalf of Stacy Dawson, a male student who wanted to attend prom with his boyfriend but was told he couldn’t. McFerren said Dawson can now attend with whomever he chooses.

Two NY Boys Named Prom 'King & Queen'

Charlie Ferrusi and Timothy Howard, seniors at Hudson High School (upstate New York), are products of the 21st Century American society, as indoctrinated via public schools. Where's THE Church?

-- From "Hudson High School makes history" by Molly Koweek, Hudson High School posted at Albany Times Union 6/11/10

This past Saturday night, June 5, was Hudson High School’s Senior Prom. Almost everything was normal: Girls wore dresses that cost a fortune, boys got tuxes to match, and Prom King and Queen were elected. However, something was different this year. For the first time, two males took the coveted elected positions.

While in class with one of their favorite teachers, Felicia Near, they tossed around the idea of running together as King and Queen. Both are gay, however, they’re not a couple. They wanted to do something that had never been done before, but they didn’t realize how big a deal their election would be. Principal Steven Spicer granted them permission to run together. ”Spicer is so supportive,” Ferrusi explained.

While the overwhelming response to the election results has been positive, there has been a decent amount of negativity surrounding the entire process. Before running, some students asked Howard, “You don’t have a vagina, why are you running for queen?” A handful of parents are outraged with the situation. Some are writing negative posts on Facebook, and others are accusing Spicer of being gay, Ferrusi explained. Still others are convinced that the voting was rigged. ”They’ll say anything to make it look like we lost but they can’t take away our crowns,” he said.

It is a coincidence [sic] that Howard and Ferrusi are making headlines just weeks before Hudson’s first Pride Day. Victor Mendolia, 49, Chairman of the Hudson City Democrats, and involved coordinator for Hudson Pride, is helping the two out with the large media influx. “There were so many media calls coming in and they were overwhelmed,” Mendolia said. As a person who has a lot of experience dealing with the press, he wanted to make them feel comfortable. Ferrusi and Howard will be the Grand Marshal for Hudson Pride on June 20, as well as Capital Pride 2010 Parade in Albany on June 13.

Hudson High School officials held a press conference Thursday in front of the school to further solidify their support for this year’s prom royalty.

Attending the conference was Hudson Pride parade and celebration head organizer, and drag queen, Trixie Starr, who announced that Ferrusi and Howard will be the parade’s grand marshals. “This is a pivotal moment for Hudson,” Starr said.

“This is indeed an historic and hopefully trend-setting event,” said High School Principal Steven Spicer. “The fact that two gay students were elected by their peers to be the prom king and queen is a response on behalf of our young people to the climate of tolerance, support and acceptance we strive to create every day.”

School District Superintendent Jack Howe said Spicer, the student advisors and the students themselves have the full support from his office and the Board of Education.

Spicer said it is important for people to realize that the students didn’t make their selection to make a statement, news or history but out of love for their friends. The principal added that he saw the election of Ferrusi and Howard as a further realization of the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King.

Hudson Mayor Richard Scalera said Thursday that he couldn’t believe that Hudson was the first city or school district to have this happen. “My first thought was Hudson has a sizable gay community,” Scalera said, “and over the years it has become more and more accepting of gay lifestyles. Obviously those sentiments have gotten to the high school.”

ACLU Garners Lesbian Teen Spotlight: Judge Ruling

A federal judge has ruled that the Itawamba County [Mississippi] school board violated the rights of a lesbian student by canceling the prom when the student challenged a ban on same-sex dates.

-- From "Judge won't force Miss. district to hold prom" by Shelia Byrd, Associated Press 3/23/10

A Mississippi school district violated a lesbian student's rights by banning her from bringing her girlfriend to the prom, a federal judge ruled Tuesday, but he stopped short of forcing the district to hold the event.

U.S. District Judge Glen H. Davidson denied an American Civil Liberties Union request for a preliminary injunction that would have forced the Itawamba County school district to sponsor the April 2 prom and allow Constance McMillen to escort her girlfriend and wear a tuxedo.

Davidson did say he will hold a trial on the issue later, but he did not set a date and any ruling would likely come too late to force the district to hold the prom when it was originally scheduled.

Davidson said he denied the injunction request because a private prom parents are planning will serve the same purpose as the school prom. He wrote in his ruling that "requiring defendants to step back into a sponsorship role at this late date would only confuse and confound the community on the issue."

[McMillen's] case has become a cause celebre since the school district canceled the prom March 10.

She has appeared on the "The Early Show," "The Wanda Sykes Show" and "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" to talk about how she is fighting for tolerance. DeGeneres presented her with a $30,000 college scholarship from Tonic, a digital media company. A Facebook page set up by the ACLU for McMillen has over 400,000 fans.

Both sides pled their case in court Monday, with McMillen’s legal team accusing the district of violating her constitutional right to free expression. School district attorneys countered that the board was attempting to restore order to the school by withdrawing sponsorship of the event.

“The Court finds this expression and communication of her viewpoint is the type of speech that falls squarely within the purview of the First Amendment,” Davidson wrote in an opinion published this afternoon.

“The Court finds that requiring Defendants to step back into a sponsorship role at this late date would only confuse and confound the community on the issue,” he wrote.

School Cancels Prom to Defuse Gay Agenda, ACLU Sues

A Mississippi county school board announced Wednesday it would cancel its upcoming prom after a gay student petitioned to bring a same-sex date to the event.

-- From "Miss. prom canceled after lesbian's date request" by Chris Joyner, USA TODAY 3/11/10

"Due to the distractions to the educational process caused by recent events, the Itawamba County School District has decided to not host a prom at Itawamba Agricultural High School this year," school board members said in a statement.

Constance McMillen, an 18-year-old senior at Itawamba, recently challenged a school policy prohibiting her from bringing her girlfriend as her date to the April 2 prom. McMillen, who is a lesbian, and the Mississippi chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union urged school officials to reverse the policy both on McMillen's choice of date and attire. She also wanted to wear a tuxedo to the dance.

ACLU attorney Christine Sun said her organization receives requests for help every year from students facing anti-gay prom policies. The complaints are especially prevalent in the South where attitudes toward sexuality are more conservative, she said.

In the announcement, the school board encouraged the community to organize a private prom. "It is our hope that private citizens will organize an event for the juniors and seniors. "We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this causes anyone," the statement concluded. School officials did not respond to calls seeking comment.

From "ACLU sues Mississippi school that canceled prom rather than let lesbian couple attend" News release from the ACLU 3/11/10

OXFORD, MS – The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit today against a Mississippi High School that has canceled prom rather than let a lesbian high school student attend the prom with her girlfriend and wear a tuxedo to the event. In papers filed with the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Mississippi, the ACLU asks the court to reinstate the prom for all students at the school and charges Itawamba County School District officials are violating Constance McMillen’s First Amendment right to freedom of expression.

Today’s filing comes after Itawamba County School District issued a statement yesterday saying they were canceling prom, following a letter from the ACLU and the Mississippi Safe Schools Coalition demanding that they reverse their decision. McMillen said that before that happened, school officials had told her that she could not arrive at the prom with her girlfriend, also a student at IAHS, and that they might be thrown out if any other students complained about their presence at the April 2 event.

The ACLU will ask the court in the next few days to grant McMillen a preliminary injunction ordering the school to reinstate the April 2 prom, let McMillen and her girlfriend go to the prom together, and let McMillen wear a tuxedo to the event.

Female Student Sues to Wear Tux to Prom

17-year-old rejects dresses, says they represent sexual identity — might be allowed to wear pantsuit

UPDATE 3/16/09: School gives in to ACLU, changes policy.

-- From "Lesbian sues to wear tux to prom" Associated Press 3/12/09

A Lebanon [Indiana] High School senior is suing the school after her principal told her she could not wear a tuxedo to the school’s prom.

The lawsuit filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Indianapolis says that the principal told the girl that, while the school’s dress code does not contain gender-based requirements, there is a special dress code for prom that requires female students to wear a formal dress.

The lawsuit filed on the girl’s behalf by the American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana alleges that the prom attire policy intentionally discriminates against students based on gender, and that because the school receives federal funds, the policy also violates federal law. It says the policy violates her free speech rights and the equal protection clause of the Constitution.

AZ: School District Distributes Prom Bag Complete with Condoms

School board approves sexual gifts for students at dance

From "Schools new prom fever: Giving condoms to kids" by Bob Unruh, posted 4/7/08 at WorldnetDaily.com

A school board in Arizona has decided condoms are among the items that should be given to students attending this year's prom.

The school board in the Bisbee District voted 4-1 at a recent meeting to include the condoms in a "prom bag.".

A spokeswoman in the office of Supt. Paul McDonald confirmed the condoms would be handed out to the event celebrants, along with other items.

"The governing board approved [this]," she told WND. "They are to have what they call prom bags, which include picture frames and balloons and candy and other items. They requested from the health department if they could put a condom in the bag also."

She said Bisbee High Principal Jim Gordon could provide additional details, but Gordon declined to respond to a message left by WND.

WND has also reported a court's conclusion that a law requires children to be taught how to use condoms.

But handing out condoms in association with a traditional high school dance still horrified a number of parents and others in the Bisbee area.

I thought school boards were supposed to represent parents and taxpayers. It seems as though they more often represent the interests of liberal educators...
