Many commercial insurers also have begun covering such procedures.

Research on the surgeries is mixed. Critics point to a 2011 study published in the online journal PLOS One by researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden that followed more than 300 transgender people after surgery and found they had a higher rate of psychiatric care, suicide and mortality than a control group. . . .

With a shift in the cultural paradigm, transgender rights are slowly being accommodated. . . . Not surprisingly, political, academic, and judicial activism has advanced a new confrontational liberal zeitgeist that has made it difficult to have a dissenting opinion for fear of being maliciously labelled. . . .

Prominent businesses are boycotting states, such as Georgia, Indiana, and North Carolina that uphold the Religious Freedom Restoration Act [RFRA] that is arguably discriminatory and unconstitutional.

[However, priest and neuroscientist Tad Pacholczyk's] scientific and theological background offered a unique insight into this highly-charged subject.

In the article, “Seeing through the intersex confusion,” he acknowledged that confounding physiological (hormonal) triggers and cultural forces lead to psychological discordance.

Comparing somatic disorders to other developmental disorders that should never “be subjected to bias or mistreatment”, he argued that “while a newborn’s ‘intrinsic maleness’ or ‘intrinsic femaleness’ may be difficult to access in certain more complicated intersex cases, the point remains that there is an ‘underlying’ sexual constitution that we must do our best to recognise and respect and act in accord with”.

Equally important is his far-reaching assertion that “willfully (denying this reality) is a prescription for disillusionment and dishonesty”.

In a recent Sun op-ed, colleagues at the Bloomberg School of Public Health sought to "disassociate" themselves from a paper we published in The New Atlantis entitled "Sexuality and Gender." Our paper explored, and found flimsy, any scientific support for popular notions about sexual orientation and gender. . . . Our paper entailed a careful study and full description of close to 200 scientific papers.

We did say that scientific studies did not now support (though could not categorically reject) the view that sexual orientation or gender identity is an "innate" bio-behavioral feature of human beings, fixed at conception and rigidly defining sexual desires, attractions and identities throughout life — i.e. the claim that gay people are "born that way." We also said studies of gay, lesbian and transgender populations revealed among them a considerable increase in mental distress and disorder up to and including suicide. And, we noted, science declares that there are only two human sexes, so that thoughts such as "I'm a woman in a man's body" did not describe a biological reality even though it might be a powerful feeling or assumption of a person and could take myriad forms. Follow up of children with such feelings demonstrated that the great majority — 80 to 95 percent — abandon them as they mature.

Our colleagues did not offer any specific scientific study that refuted what we demonstrated. . . .

“Due to the pornography available on the Internet, we are finding out that this type of sex dysfunction is a real entity,” Dr. David B. Samadi, chairman of the urology department and chief of robotic surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, told Everyday Health. “It is a problem in the brain, not the penis.”

Samadi said porn addiction could theoretically harm someone of any age’s sexual performance, but that he mostly sees it among young men in their teens and 20s. About 40 million adults in the U.S. visit porn websites on a regular basis, according to Psych Guides.

“In my particular practice, I will say 15 to 20 percent of the erectile dysfunction I see is related to porn consumption,” Dr. Muhammed Mirza, an internist based in Jersey City, told Everyday Health.

Samadi compared the issue to alcohol. Someone who drinks more and more alcohol eventually builds up a tolerance and needs more to feel the effects. Additionally, porn can set up unrealistic expectations for reality.

One survey of 28,000 Italian men found that "excessive consumption" of porn, starting at age 14, and daily consumption in their early to mid-20s, desensitized men to even the most violent images. According to the head of the Italian Society of Andrology and Sexual Medicine, this can cause male sexual dysfunction by lowering libido and eventually leading to an inability to get an erection.

It’s not necessarily how much porn a person watches. The type can also play a role, Samadi said. Unlike the soft-core porn images seen in such magazines as Playboy or Penthouse, online pornography is generally more graphic and often depicts kinky, deviant, or even violent behavior. It's also available 24/7.

Chronic porn consumption can cause a shift in brain chemicals that may contribute to organic erectile dysfunction, said Dr. Mirza. “Your expectations become much higher than normal,” he said. "If you look at any porn video image, they are magnified. This is not what the normal anatomy looks like.”

"'Reel' life is very different than real life," said Nicole Sachs, LCSW, a social worker in Rehoboth, Del., and the author of "The Meaning of Truth." The unrealistic imagery seen in some pornography can make men or women feel self-conscious, which could lead to problems with sexual function or intimacy, she said.

The findings of this new study were just presented at a major cardiology conference in Chicago. SLU Care cardiologist Dr. Michael Lim at SSM Health SLU Hospital was there.

Stem cells from a patient’s own bone marrow were harvested, treated and then directly re-injected back into the muscle.

Lim says when they find that less people are dead with one therapy versus those who did not get the therapy, it is strong evidence. He adds that it is really great news.

The clinical trial found that end-stage heart failure patients treated with stem cells harvested from their own bone marrow had 37 percent fewer cardiac events than those who received a "dummy" placebo.

If further studies are successful, stem cell therapy may one day offer an alternative to current treatments for end-stage heart failure, such as heart transplantation and left ventricular assist device therapy, the researchers said.

The study was published online April 4 in The Lancet journal and presented simultaneously at the annual meeting of the American College of Cardiology (ACC) in Chicago.

"This would be considered a huge success because this much of a reduction has not been shown with any other (cell) therapy," said Dr. Amit N. Patel, director of the clinical regenerative medicine program in the University of Utah Department of Surgery.

Here's how the therapy, which is called Ixmyelocel-T, is carried out: The researchers remove about three tablespoons of bone marrow from the hip bone while the patient is lightly sedated. The cells in the bone marrow then grow in an instrument called a bioreactor for two weeks, producing a "soup" of cells containing certain types of stem cells and immune cells that can help remodel tissue and reduce inflammation, Patel said. Finally the researchers use special catheters to identify the weakest parts of the heart and inject the soup into these areas.

In the year after the injection, 20.3% of the patients in the cell therapy group experienced an adverse event such as infection or stroke, compared with 41.8% of the placebo group. "It was surprising that the (placebo) patients did significantly worse," Patel said. This could have been because they underwent the same invasive procedures as the treatment group, but did not receive the same potentially beneficial cell therapy, which could have anti-inflammatory effects that decreased adverse events, he said.

Therapies based on "induced multipotent stem" (iMS) cells could be tested in human trials as early as next year, according to Australian researchers.

While ES [embryonic stem] cells are natural, obtained from early-stage embryos, iPS cells are made by reprogramming adult cells. But both run the risk of generating cancerous tumours, and iPS cells are created using genes injected by viruses, which is clinically unacceptable.

The iMS cells which are the focus of the new research reported in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences have a more limited capacity but claimed to be safer than ES or iPS cells.

Stem cell therapies capable of regenerating any human tissue damaged by injury, disease or ageing could be available within a few years, following landmark research led by UNSW Australia researchers.

The repair system, similar to the method used by salamanders to regenerate limbs, could be used to repair everything from spinal discs to bone fractures, and has the potential to transform current treatment approaches to regenerative medicine.

Study lead author, haematologist and UNSW Associate Professor John Pimanda, said the new technique, which reprograms bone and fat cells into induced multipotent stem cells (iMS), has been successfully demonstrated in mice.

The technique developed by UNSW researchers involves extracting adult human fat cells and treating them with the compound 5-Azacytidine (AZA), along with platelet-derived growth factor-AB (PDGF-AB) for approximately two days. The cells are then treated with the growth factor alone for a further two-three weeks.

AZA is known to induce cell plasticity, which is crucial for reprogramming cells. The AZA compound relaxes the hard-wiring of the cell, which is expanded by the growth factor, transforming the bone and fat cells into iMS cells. When the stem cells are inserted into the damaged tissue site, they multiply, promoting growth and healing.

Utah now has a law on the books requiring doctors to give anesthesia to abortion patients 20 or more weeks into pregnancy in an effort to reduce pain felt by the fetus.

Republican Gov. Gary Herbert signed the bill, HB 0234, into law Monday. . . .

Republican State Sen. Curt Bramble, sponsor of the bill, said he sought a ban on abortion after 20 weeks but was informed such a bill would likely be tested on constitutional grounds. His bill, which requires that doctors "eliminate or alleviate organic pain to the unborn child," was the next best option, he said.

Proponents of the law say the anesthesia prevents any suffering by the fetus during the abortion procedure. "Pain-capable unborn protection" laws exist in 12 states, although Utah's law is the first to demand that anesthesia is provided.

Dr. Sean Esplin of Intermountain Healthcare in Utah said anesthesia or an analgesic would need to go through the woman in order to reach the fetus. Doctors could give a woman general anesthesia, which would make her unconscious and likely require a breathing tube, or a heavy dose of narcotics.

No other U.S. state has passed this same law, said Elizabeth Nash, a policy analyst at the abortion-rights nonprofit Guttmacher Institute. Montana lawmakers passed a similar law in 2015 requiring fetal anesthesia before surgeries, including abortions, performed after 20 or more weeks of gestation, but its Democratic governor vetoed the measure.

Twelve states ban abortions after around 20 weeks of gestation, while a handful of other states give women the option of having anesthesia.

Previous Utah law gave women the choice to have anesthesia during an abortion.

Cesar Victora, of Federal University of Pelotas in Brazil, said there is a widespread misconception that the benefits of breast-feeding only relate to poor countries. Nothing could be further from the truth. Victora added that the new study highlights the fact that breast-feeding saves lives and money in all countries, rich and poor alike.

. . . researchers said that breastfeeding increases children's intelligence and may protect them against obesity and diabetes later in life. For mothers, long-term breast-feeding reduces the risk of breast and ovarian cancer. Researchers estimated that poorer thinking skills among children who aren't breast-fed cost the global economy about $302 billion in 2012. The loss in high-income countries alone was $231 billion. Increasing breast-feeding rates for infants younger than 6 months to 90% in the United States, China and Brazil, and to 45% in the United Kingdom, would lower treatment costs of common childhood illnesses.

Only one in five children in high-income countries is breast-fed for 12 months, the researchers said. And, only one in three children in low- and middle-income countries is exclusively breast-fed for the first 6 months.

Increasing breast-feeding rates for infants younger than 6 months to 90 percent in the United States, China and Brazil, and to 45 percent in the United Kingdom, would lower treatment costs of common childhood illnesses -- such as pneumonia, diarrhea and asthma. This could save health care systems about $2.5 billion in the United States, $29.5 million in the United Kingdom, $224 million in China and $6 million in Brazil, according to the study.

Despite the many benefits of breast-feeding, rates are low, especially in high-income countries, the study showed.

[Speaking about high-income countries, such as the United States, Dr. Jennifer Wu] said a six-week maternity leave from work makes it difficult to continue nursing for a full year.

"At six weeks, you barely have gotten breastfeeding on track. When you go back to work, breast milk goes down because you're away from the baby and can't breastfeed every two or three hours," said Wu.

She said some professions are particularly demanding. "If you're a teacher, it's really hard to find 30 minutes." There's not just time pumping, but setting up and cleaning breast pump equipment.

"There aren't many jobs where you can walk away from your job and do every few hours," Wu said. "In New York and elsewhere here in the U.S., we work very long workdays, maybe 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at night and with a commute that may extend the day from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m."

She said waking up every few hours at night to breastfeed is difficult and women become sleep-deprived. "It's virtually impossible to breastfeed all night long and then work all the next day."

In a podcast interview for the series, Prof. Victora says while we are only "beginning to scratch the surface," a lot of evidence is emerging about the biology of breastfeeding and the components and properties of breast milk.

He quotes a colleague who likens breast milk to "very exquisite personalized medicine" because it reflects the biological interaction between the mother and her child, "something that formula will never be able to imitate," he notes.

He says we are also beginning to understand that breast milk has epigenetic effects - that is, it influences the expression of genes that control cell activity and development. And, another recent discovery is that breast milk contains stem cells.

For each of the first two years a mother breastfeeds over her lifetime, she decreases her risk of developing invasive breast cancer by six percent. She also benefits from reduced ovarian cancer risk.

Approximately 20,000 breast cancer deaths are prevented each year by breastfeeding; improved rates could prevent another 20,000 deaths each year.

Limited or nonexistent maternity leave. Short maternity leave (up to six weeks) increases the odds of not breastfeeding or stopping early by 400 percent;

Sally Davies, Britain’s chief medical officer, has sounded the alarm on the spread of antibiotic resistant gonorrhea.

The sexually transmitted infection is increasingly caused by strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae that resist antibiotic treatment. “Gonorrhoea is at risk of becoming an untreatable disease due to the continuing emergence of antimicrobial resistance,” Davies wrote to doctors and pharmacies. The Guardian reports that a recent outbreak of a superbug strain of the disease – one that doesn’t respond to the antibiotic azithromycin – has put Britain on high alert.

Why does this happen? When researchers look for new antibiotics, they obviously look for ones that are incredibly effective against pathogenic bacteria. But as soon as these antibiotics are released for use by the public, they start to lose their effectiveness. Bacteria are fast-evolving creatures, and individual bacterium are skilled at sharing genes that allow them to survive particular antibiotics. Bacteria can even copy resistance genes from microbes of different strains and species through a process called horizontal gene transfer.

In England, 16 cases of “super-gonorrhea” have been confirmed since March of this year, including an outbreak in Leeds, according to the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV. The strain is resistant to an antibiotic called azithromycin, which is typically used in collaboration with a drug called ceftriaxone. According to the CDC, “cephalosporin antibiotics have been the foundation of recommended treatment for gonorrhea,” and “the emergence of cephalosporin-resistant gonorrhea would significantly complicate the ability of providers to treat gonorrhea successfully, since we have few antibiotic options left that are simple, well-studied, well-tolerated, and highly effective.”

Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease that can be transmitted to anyone who is sexually active, generally infecting the genitals, throat, or rectum. Symptoms of the disease involve green or yellow discharge from genitals, as well as pain while urinating. Sometimes there are no symptoms, and a person may spread the disease to others without realizing it.

Typically, gonorrhea is treated with one or a combination of drugs, but once an antibiotic becomes more popular among patients, it loses its potency. Bacteria are constantly evolving and mutating, so it’s only a matter of time before certain strains develop resistance to common antibiotics.

The investigation was launched after the doctor was involved in a traffic accident Oct. 1 on Orchard Lake Road, according to West Bloomfield Deputy Chief Curt Lawson.

"We took [his vehicle] back to the police department and later, we went back to the vehicle at the request of the individual we’re investigating, to retrieve some items," Lawson said. "At that point, that led us to obtain a search warrant to further search. That's when the bottles and evidence were found in the trunk area of the vehicle."

Lawson said the possible human tissue and drugs were found in 13 small containers and one larger one. Lawson said police took the potential human tissue to the Oakland County Medical Examiner's Office.

The doctor’s car was impounded two weeks ago when he struck and seriously injured a child in Orchard Lake, Michigan. Last week, police obtained a warrant to search the car for its “black box” data recorder. They then discovered the human tissue and medical supplies.

Roth’s practice, the Novi Laser and Aesthetic Center, was evicted from its office space last year. The practice touted its “safe” and “reliable” medical services.

“At the office of Dr. Michael A. Roth, our office philosophy is to provide safe, complete, convenient and reliable services within a comfortable atmosphere. With over 30 years of experience, Dr. Roth strives to provide the best possible care for his patients,” a web page for the doctor reads.

Roth has a history of malpractice allegations related to abortion practices.

Roth is well known to pro-life groups in Michigan, including one which has posted at least six malpractice complaints and judgments lodged against Roth from 1988 to 2015, some involving home abortions that led to alleged complications and allegedly botched procedures that later necessitated hysterectomies.

A state health inspector found during a January 2002 check that Roth’s drug-control license had expired more than 20 years previously and resulted in Roth being placed on professional probation for six months, fined $15,000 and barred from performing abortions outside of a clinical setting.

He also has been sanctioned for shoddy record-keeping and improprieties in prescribing medication, and in 2012 was fined $2,000 and sanctioned by a state disciplinary committee for a range of violations.

Roth has a history of alleged malpractice, public records obtained by abortiondocs.org show. He agreed to pay $200,000 for botching an abortion, and another in which the Michigan Board of Medicine fined him $2,000 for violating public health code in two abortions and for perforating a woman’s uterus.

Roth was evicted from his office space twice, records show, and as of December, 2014, was reportedly out of business. His wife filed for a restraining order against him as they went through a divorce in 2005.

Last week, the transgender teen from Detroit received a life-changing gift inside a little pink and white box: her first dose of estrogen. And her emotional response, caught on camera by her mother, Erica Maison, has gone viral.

Erica said Corey has faced a number of hurdles in the past two-and-a-half years, especially when she “still looked like a boy and was dressing like a girl.” She was turned away from neighborhood parties and scolded for her attire. At school, Corey was bullied so much, Erica said, that she pulled her out in the fifth grade and homeschooled her. Finding medical professionals that specialize in transgender people, let alone transgender teens, was a challenge.

Erica said that things have gotten easier. She and Corey found the gender clinic at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, where Corey underwent hormone treatments to stop male puberty. Now with her estrogen treatments, Corey will be able to start female puberty.

Once Corey “looked more like a girl,” Erica said, things became “so much easier.” Corey dismissed her neighborhood bullies, and many of them stopped picking on her. Some even became her friends. Corey even felt comfortable enough to re-enroll in public school for 8th grade.

According to her mother, Corey is usually busy riding her penny skateboard, playing Call of Duty on her Xbox, and obsessing over makeup. “She has more than I ever had my entire life,” Erica told BuzzFeed. But this particular day was different. This was the day Corey would be permitted to begin hormone therapy.

About 25 young women in the UK who are hetereosexual and in their twenties have opted for IVF in the past five years because they feel ready to be a parent, doctors told the Mail on Sunday.

Whilst some religious groups have said a child should be brought up in a traditional family, one doctor said these single mothers are often more emotionally and financially stable than others who have been left to bring up a child after a relationship breakdown.

The news follows up a survey in 2013 which showed that one in every 200 women in the US reported to have become pregnant without having had sexual intercourse.

Out of these women, 31% said they had signed a chastity pledge whereby they vow, usually for religious reasons, not to have sex. About 28% of those girls' parents said they rarely talked to them about sex or contraception - compared to only 5% of other women who became pregnant and had had intercourse.

"The message from nature is for a male and female to have a child, and I am saddened that we are willing to distort this.

"The diminished role of the father is not desirable for the child. Once you start down this route, where do you stop?"

“A lot of them are very young, in their 20s, sometimes studying or doing very ordinary jobs and often living with their parents, rather than career women who have been driven and focused too much on their work”

“They are extremely happy to go ahead on their own and don’t care about the implications that might bring for the child or how they would go into a new relationship.”

Imam Suhaib Hasan, head of the Islamic Sharia Council in the UK, accused doctors engaged in providing IVF treatment to patients of acting like God.

Hasan said that when the man is removed from the aspect of a family, the woman becomes merely a breeding machine. He added that it effectively denies the right of the child to have a father.

Professor Robert Winston said "test-tube babies could suffer terrible health problems because the clinics were using IVF techniques which had not been properly tested."

He added, that the risk could include birth defects, genetic damage which may not emerge until adulthood and an increased chance of cancer. The medical profession was ignoring the evidence of problems that could take place.

Aside from that, he stressed the long-term attack of IVF, and follows a growing body of evidence that test tube babies are less healthy than the naturally conceived children.

Conversely, another study had been generated by Lord Winston at over three million normal conceptions and 40,000 IVF babies that found that IVF babies were two and half times more likely to have a low birth weight and prematurity compared to those babies with normal reproduction. Since it is not 100% guaranteed, it can lead to unsuccessful birth cycle.

Winston even stated, that small babies are more likely to grow up to develop vascular disease, diabetes, hypertension and osteoporosis.

Obama Edicts More Transgender Rights via ObamaCare

In order to protect the full-range of genders in a transformed America (where previously there were only two genders), the Obama administration has stunned the health care sector by interpreting Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act (ObamaCare) as providing civil rights protections for the sexually confused.

Gay rights advocates, such as Mara Youdelman, cheer that transgender "men" can no longer be denied a Pap smear.

The Obama administration proposed a new rule Thursday that would ban discrimination against transgender people in the health care system, saying stereotypes about sexual identity have no place in provision of health insurance or medical care.

The rule prohibits insurance companies from denying coverage to transgender people, allows them the right to use the facilities, such as restrooms, according to their gender identity and says providers may not discriminate on the basis of their own notions of masculinity or femininity.

Jocelyn Samuels, head of the HHS office of civil rights, said the rule does not require insurers to pay for someone to receive sex-change treatment. Medicare and Medicaid, as well as any service providers who accept federal dollars would have to follow the rules.

Carl Schmid, deputy executive director of The AIDS Institute, an advocacy group, said it doesn't go far enough [because it doesn't make sex change free and/or inexpensive to transgenders].

In the past, several health insurance plans have categorically excluded health care related to transitioning between genders, often on the grounds that such procedures are often cosmetic, not medically necessary, and elective in nature. Now, such categorical bans will be disallowed, and insurers will have to cover many of the procedures.

HHS says the new rule won’t require insurers to cover all hormone treatments or sex reassignment surgeries, but it will almost certainly require them to cover a large number of them.

Jocelyn Samuels, director of HHS’s Office for Civil Rights, told CNBC that the new rule would prohibit insurers from denying surgeries and other procedures simply because they’re intended to treat gender dysphoria (where a person feels their body has the wrong gender) rather than some other ailment. For example, if a doctor recommended a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) to treat gender dysphoria in a woman who identifies as a man, the insurance company couldn’t deny it if it would ordinarily follow such a recommendation for other conditions (like cancer).

Doctors' offices, hospitals, insurers and others that receive federal dollars would no longer be allowed to discriminate against gays and transgender individuals under a proposed rule from the Obama administration released Thursday.

Federal regulations already prohibit discrimination in health plans under the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability.

The rule does not just prohibit discrimination against LGBT individuals but also any discrimination based on gender identity. The rule defines gender identity as an individual's "internal sense of gender, which may be different from an individual's sex assigned at birth."

The Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, was passed in 2010 [when President Obama and nearly all Democrats opposed same-sex marriage] and included anti-discrimination provisions to prevent insurers from charging customers more or denying coverage based on age or sex.

That law left some areas open to interpretation and thousands of consumers complain each year about being discriminated against, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said on Thursday.

The proposed rule says that individuals cannot be denied care or coverage based on sex, or gender identity, and that individuals must be treated consistent with their gender identity. Providers cannot deny or limit care based on gender and insurers cannot have policies prohibiting gender transition health services that may be offered for other reasons, such as a hysterectomy.

The National Center for Transgender Equality said it had been advocating for the policy since 2010.

The proposed rule would apply throughout the health care system — affecting most health insurers, hospitals, nursing homes and physicians. It says that the provision applies to any providers or insurers who receive “federal financial assistance,” and lists an array of funding streams that would make them subject to the rule.

Though the proposal is quite clear in its application to transgender rights, it is more vague on whether the law’s anti-discrimination provisions apply to gay, lesbian and bisexual patients. . . .

At least 10 states and the District of Columbia already require health insurers to cover some treatments for people undergoing gender transition, as do the health plans for federal workers and many large employers. . . .

The antidiscrimination regulations proposed by HHS apply to health insurance marketplaces or exchanges under the Affordable Care Act, any health program administered by HHS, and any healthcare program or activity — think medical care — that receives financial assistance from HHS. Examples of the latter include hospitals that accept Medicare patients and physicians who treat Medicaid patients.

HHS said that receiving Medicare Part B reimbursement would not subject physicians to the proposed regulations because these payments are not deemed federal financial assistance. However, physicians would come under the regulations if they earn Medicare bonuses for meaningful use of an electronic health record system. The same would be true if they receive research grants from the National Institutes of Health or work in the National Health Service Corps. Because of the pervasiveness of HHS funding, "almost all practicing physicians in the United States are reached (by the regulations," HHS said.

Researchers at the Center for Human Reproduction in New York reviewed data from the 380 fertility centers in the United States, which are responsible for 92 percent of all IVF cycles. The research is from 2013, the first year the American Society for Reproductive Medicine said that oocyte cryopreservation, or freezing donated eggs, was no longer considered an experimental procedure.

Women whose implanted embryos used fresh eggs had live births 49.6 percent of the time, as compared with 43.2 percent of the women who used frozen eggs. When factoring the number of embryos women received, the live birth rate was 56.1 percent for fresh eggs and 47.1 percent for frozen eggs.

Researchers examined data from 380 fertility clinics that reported their successes and failures in 2013 to the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology. Those clinics represented 81% of all fertility clinics operating in the U.S. that year, and they performed 92% of all IVF cycles, the researchers wrote.

Though fertility clinics routinely freeze embryos, they began freezing eggs more recently. Only in 2013 did the American Society for Reproductive Medicine declare that egg-freezing no longer was “experimental,” according to the JAMA report.

Freezing eggs makes in vitro fertilization much more convenient for patients and doctors because the egg donor and the recipient don’t need to have their cycles synced. It also has the potential to make IVF less expensive because eggs retrieved from a single donor can be shared more easily among several women. “However, the added convenience and lower cycle costs must be balanced against the lower live birth rates with use of cryopreserved oocytes,” the study authors wrote.

A notable finding in the study is the high number of egg donation cycles (20%) that used frozen eggs, according to Richard J. Paulson, MD, chief of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine in Los Angeles. "That is a high number and indicates that the use of frozen eggs for egg donation is clearly on the rise," Dr Paulson told Medscape Medical News. "It also substantiates the idea that in the future, frozen donor eggs banks are going to be used more commonly."

Many fertility experts now recommend cryopreservation for women who want to become mothers in later life, because younger eggs are known to be healthier.

Apple and Google even pay for their female employees to have the procedure, which normally costs between £3,500 and £5,000, so that they can forge ahead with their careers.

But a new study suggests that the freezing or thawing process may damage eggs and could reduce a women’s chance of becoming a mother.

Last year Dr Geeta Nargund, a fertility expert from the Create Fertility European Centre of Excellence suggested that egg freezing would become the new birthday present of choice for 30 year old women. The late Prof Carl Djerassi, who invented the Pill also told The Telegraph shortly before his death that contraception will become obsolete because women will choose to freeze their eggs while young and then be sterilised.

[The Center for Human Reproduction's Dr. Vitaly A.] Kushnir says the disparity in live birth rates could be partly explained by the fact that patients tend to start with a larger number of fresh eggs than frozen eggs, since donated frozen eggs are often packaged in smaller bundles. “If you start with 10 embryos rather than 5 embryos, you have a better chance of selecting the best embryo,” he says. “But it could also be that freezing and thawing diminishes the quality of the egg.”

He noted that while freezing eggs is no longer considered “experimental,” it’s still not a foolproof procedure, and emphasized that it tends to be easier to freeze embryos than eggs. “With an egg, its only one cell; it either makes it or it doesn’t,” he says.

Another important thing to note is that this study measured frozen eggs from egg donors, who tend to be much younger than women who electively freeze eggs for fertility preservation. Egg donors tend to be between 18-25 (the cutoff age for Egg Donor America, one egg donation center, is 29) while women who freeze their own eggs tend to be in their mid-late 30s. Since most doctors think egg quality can decline with age, women who freeze their own eggs might see even lower live birth rates than the donor eggs in this study.
