Breast Cancer Solution Includes Breast-feeding

Once again, God's design of women has been proven . . .
"The evidence outlined in the series, contributed by some of the leading experts in the field, leaves no doubt that the decision not to breast-feed has major long-term negative effects on the health, nutrition and development of children and on women's health."
-- Cesar Victora, The Lancet series author, of Federal University of Pelotas in Brazil

"We want to encourage breastfeeding but I've also seen patients in tears who can't do it. This article makes it seem like developed countries, rich women, they should all be breastfeeding. But for working women, it's harder for them to breastfeed."

-- From "Breastfeeding could Save 800,000 Infant Deaths and 20,000 Breast Cancer Deaths Worldwide: Study" by Sandra Hicks, The California Post 1/29/16

As per the study article published online Jan. 28 in The Lancet, the decrease in children's deaths is equivalent to 13% of all deaths in children younger than 2 years of age. The report finds that the current breast-feeding practices cost the world's economy hundreds of billions of dollars a year. Cesar Victora, of Federal University of Pelotas in Brazil, said there is a widespread misconception that the benefits of breast-feeding only relate to poor countries. Nothing could be further from the truth. Victora added that the new study highlights the fact that breast-feeding saves lives and money in all countries, rich and poor alike.

. . . researchers said that breastfeeding increases children's intelligence and may protect them against obesity and diabetes later in life. For mothers, long-term breast-feeding reduces the risk of breast and ovarian cancer. Researchers estimated that poorer thinking skills among children who aren't breast-fed cost the global economy about $302 billion in 2012. The loss in high-income countries alone was $231 billion. Increasing breast-feeding rates for infants younger than 6 months to 90% in the United States, China and Brazil, and to 45% in the United Kingdom, would lower treatment costs of common childhood illnesses.

From "Worldwide Boost in Breast-Feeding Could Save 800,000 Lives: Study" posted at HealthDay News 1/28/16

Only one in five children in high-income countries is breast-fed for 12 months, the researchers said. And, only one in three children in low- and middle-income countries is exclusively breast-fed for the first 6 months.

Increasing breast-feeding rates for infants younger than 6 months to 90 percent in the United States, China and Brazil, and to 45 percent in the United Kingdom, would lower treatment costs of common childhood illnesses -- such as pneumonia, diarrhea and asthma. This could save health care systems about $2.5 billion in the United States, $29.5 million in the United Kingdom, $224 million in China and $6 million in Brazil, according to the study.

Despite the many benefits of breast-feeding, rates are low, especially in high-income countries, the study showed.

[Speaking about high-income countries, such as the United States, Dr. Jennifer Wu] said a six-week maternity leave from work makes it difficult to continue nursing for a full year.

"At six weeks, you barely have gotten breastfeeding on track. When you go back to work, breast milk goes down because you're away from the baby and can't breastfeed every two or three hours," said Wu.

She said some professions are particularly demanding. "If you're a teacher, it's really hard to find 30 minutes." There's not just time pumping, but setting up and cleaning breast pump equipment.

"There aren't many jobs where you can walk away from your job and do every few hours," Wu said. "In New York and elsewhere here in the U.S., we work very long workdays, maybe 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at night and with a commute that may extend the day from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m."

She said waking up every few hours at night to breastfeed is difficult and women become sleep-deprived. "It's virtually impossible to breastfeed all night long and then work all the next day."

The leading medical journal The Lancet just released a new Series on Breastfeeding with remarkable new evidence on the health and economic benefits of breastfeeding. . . .

Now more than ever we know what needs to be done to support and enable mothers to breastfeed. With such compelling evidence, all of us, including governments, donors, development agencies, the research community, the private sector and civil society need to step up. Breastfeeding can be dramatically improved in a short period of time.

Low and middle income countries such as Burkina Faso, India, Malawi, Peru and Zambia, and high income countries such as Norway, Sweden and Finland, have shown that it is possible to maintain high breastfeeding rates or increase rates in a short period of time provided political commitment, strong policies and programs are in place.

The two-part [Lancet] series is the most detailed analysis of levels, trends and benefits of breastfeeding around the world.

In a podcast interview for the series, Prof. Victora says while we are only "beginning to scratch the surface," a lot of evidence is emerging about the biology of breastfeeding and the components and properties of breast milk.

He quotes a colleague who likens breast milk to "very exquisite personalized medicine" because it reflects the biological interaction between the mother and her child, "something that formula will never be able to imitate," he notes.

He says we are also beginning to understand that breast milk has epigenetic effects - that is, it influences the expression of genes that control cell activity and development. And, another recent discovery is that breast milk contains stem cells.

The depth and breadth of the Breastfeeding Series included 28 systematic reviews and meta-analyses--22 commissioned specifically for the Series. In total, more than 1,300 studies were reviewed to provide the most exhaustive look at the benefits, determinants, and trends in breastfeeding to date.

According to Series co-lead, Dr. Nigel Rollins with the Department of Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health at the World Health Organization, "This new research demonstrates that breastfeeding results in improved child development, with huge economics gains for individuals, families, as well as at the national level."

For each of the first two years a mother breastfeeds over her lifetime, she decreases her risk of developing invasive breast cancer by six percent. She also benefits from reduced ovarian cancer risk.

Approximately 20,000 breast cancer deaths are prevented each year by breastfeeding; improved rates could prevent another 20,000 deaths each year.

Doctors: Abortion Causes Breast Cancer—Media Silent

As liberal media continue to tout abortion industry claims to the contrary, the American College of Pediatricians is repeating its conclusive warning of the causal link of abortion to breast cancer, especially for adolescents. A 2013 study by Dr. Rebecca Johnson, Seattle Children’s Hospital cancer specialist, demonstrates “an increasing risk of breast cancer with each subsequent abortion,” but finds no evidence of increased breast cancer risk from miscarriage.

The [pediatricians group's] press release claims that "the medical community has been reluctant to acknowledge the link, induced abortion prior to a full term delivery, and prior to 32 weeks of gestation, increases the likelihood that a woman will develop breast cancer."

A study led by Dr. Johnson and her colleagues and published in Feb 2013 shows that incidence of metastatic breast cancer in young women aged 25 to 39 years has been increased in the U.S., according to the release.  Studies in China, India and Romania show that abortion is associated with risk of breast cancer in a “dose” responsive manner.

In the United States, about one third of pregnancies are terminated or aborted.

In February 2013, Dr. Johnson and her colleagues made national news when they reported an increased incidence of metastatic breast cancer in young women in the U.S. aged 25 – 39 years.  Other epidemiological studies from China, India, and Romania demonstrate an increasing incidence of breast cancer as abortions increased – with a “dose effect” showing an increasing risk of breast cancer with each subsequent abortion. President Den Trumbull states, “When one considers the normal anatomy and physiology of the breast it becomes clear that this link is causal not merely correlational.”

The College looks to the day when the lives and health of all children from conception to natural death will be respected and protected. In the mean time, the College urges all health care providers to educate women on the risks associated with induced abortion, including the increased risk of breast cancer.

From "Abortion and the Risk of Breast Cancer: Information for the Adolescent Woman and Her Parents" by American College of Pediatricians – December 2013

Induced abortion (IA) prior to 32 weeks gestation appears to increase a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer. This association is largely ignored by the mainstream medical community, not included in sex education programs, and even disputed by some. For example, the Guttmacher Institute claims, “Exhaustive reviews by panels convened by the U.S. and British governments have concluded that there is no association between abortion and breast cancer. There is also no indication that abortion is a risk factor for other cancers.” However, as documented by the Breast Cancer Prevention Institute, the vast majority of studies (57 of 73 worldwide) do show a strong association between IA and an increased risk of breast cancer. This discrepancy exists for many reasons, including bias in the selection of articles chosen for “exhaustive review,” as well as flaws in methodology (e.g. including spontaneous abortions along with IAs) of some studies that discount the association. As with any medical treatment or recommendation, a lack of 100 percent certainty and the need for constant re-evaluation is not a legitimate rationale for withholding potentially life-threatening information concerning an elective procedure.

From "Abortion and Breast Cancer: The Stubborn Link Returns" by Joel Brind, National Review 3/10/15

Prominent abortion practitioner and promoter David Grimes bemoans that bumper stickers still warn that abortion increases the risk of breast cancer, even though, he asserts, that “theory . . . was debunked long ago.” So begins Grimes’s recent piece on the Huffington Post’s blog Healthy Living. “Long ago” was, though Grimes doesn’t say so, 1997 to 2008, when there flowed a stream of “debunking” publications — largely studies that were methodologically flawed — reporting that no abortion–breast cancer (ABC) link existed. They were effective in fading the ABC link from public consciousness. But now the ABC link has returned, stubbornly, provoking renewed efforts to debunk it.

Being real, the ABC link is showing up, conspicuously, as millions of women worldwide who have had abortions over the past several decades are coming down with breast cancer at alarmingly increased rates. Dozens of papers are being published that show the trend. Grimes does not acknowledge the recent studies, however, relying rather on the discredited arguments of “long ago” — and some clever sleight of hand — in his shoddy attempt to disprove the link.

. . . Contrary to Grimes’s claim that the ABC link was long ago “debunked,” the epidemiological evidence has grown tremendously stronger. The inference of a causal association between abortion and breast cancer has become all the more compelling, with our advancing knowledge of the hormonal changes during pregnancy and of how such changes during interrupted pregnancies dovetail with the susceptibility of cells in the breast to become cancerous.

But Grimes makes mention of no data from this century at all, only of data from “long ago.”

With over a billion women in China and India alone, a very conservative prediction would be that in the coming decades, millions there will die of breast cancer that can be attributed to abortion. No wonder Grimes is not interested in the recent data: It’s devastating to his “safe abortion” agenda.

From "The breast cancer epidemic: 10 facts" by A. Patrick Schneider II, Christine M. Zainer, Christopher Kevin Kubat, Nancy K. Mullen and Amberly K. Windisch, published in The Linacre Quarterly 81 (3) 2014, 244–277

Affecting one in eight U.S. women, breast cancer is a modern American epidemic. This review contains 10 facts that summarize the emerging epidemiology of this tragic development. . . . The incidence of breast cancer has risen dramatically during the last four decades. Moreover, a growing international acceptance of Western style sexual and reproductive practices has been associated with an increase in worldwide breast cancer rates. A number of breast cancer risk factors that are potentially preventable are now established. An early epidemiological insight was that a delay (or avoidance) of childbearing raises the risk of breast cancer. Similarly, a reduced duration (or avoidance) of breastfeeding, is a loss of a natural breast cancer preventive. A greater understanding of the cancer-protective physiological mechanisms that occur during the first full-term pregnancy (FFTP) has resulted in an enhanced understanding of the breast cancer “susceptibility window” that occurs between puberty and the FFTP.

. . . Many reports from the United States and other Western countries have also linked induced abortion (IA) to breast cancer (the abortion–breast cancer (ABC) link). Recently, there has been a surge in the number of reports from multiple, non-Western nations, associating abortion with breast cancer. Consequently, there is now sufficient evidence to conclude that IA is causally linked to breast cancer.

There is also evidence of a compounding of breast cancer risk factors in girls and young women. Recent epidemiological research found a large increase in this malignancy in young women that is metastatic (to bone, brain, and lungs) at the time of diagnosis. This ominous development has “no recommended screening practice” and a dismal prognosis. This sobering trend mandates the need for disclosure of breast cancer risk factors. A medical, legal, and ethical duty for full and accurate informed consent exists for all females. This is especially imperative for a girl (with her parent or guardian), or a young woman, who is considering the choice of an oral contraceptive (OC), including so-called “emergency contraception (EC),” IA (or both) during her “susceptibility window.”

A new study out of Seattle suggests that the birth control pill could be linked to an increased risk for breast cancer. Scientists from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and their colleagues have found evidence that women who recently used birth control containing high-dose estrogen showed an increased risk for breast cancer.

The breast cancer data, published today in Cancer Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research, concludes that recent oral contraceptive use increased breast cancer risk by 50 percent, compared with never or former use. The results suggested that this risk may vary by the level of estrogen in the pill and other pill formulations. Women who took low-dose estrogen birth control within the past year were not found to be at a higher breast cancer risk.

From "Vasectomy linked to aggressive prostate cancer" by Robert Preidt, HealthDay/CBS News 7/11/14

For the study, Harvard researchers analyzed data from more than 49,400 American men who were followed for 24 years, starting in 1986. During that time, 6,023 cases of prostate cancer were diagnosed among the men, including 811 fatal cases.

The 25 percent of the men in the study who'd had a vasectomy had a 10 percent increased risk of developing prostate cancer, according to the study published online July 7 in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

Vasectomy was not linked with an increased risk of low-grade prostate cancer. But it was associated with a 20 percent higher risk of advanced prostate cancer and a 19 percent greater risk of fatal prostate cancer, respectively, the study authors said.

Even among men who had regular prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening tests for prostate cancer, those who had a vasectomy were 56 percent more likely to develop fatal prostate cancer. This link was strongest among men who had a vasectomy at a younger age.

From "Recent use of some oral contraceptives increases breast cancer risk" by Honor Whiteman, Medical News Today 8/1/14

Numerous studies have suggested that birth control pills increase the risk of breast cancer. Now, a new study suggests that this increased risk may only apply to recent users and is dependent on the formulation of the pill.

The research team, including Elisabeth F. Beaber of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, WA, recently published their findings in the journal Cancer Research.

In this latest study, the team set out to see whether increased breast cancer risk could be attributed to certain types of man-made female hormones.

"Oral contraceptive formulations have changed over time in the US, and contemporary formulations have received relatively less scrutiny with respect to breast cancer risk," Beaber told us.

From "Some birth control pills linked to higher breast cancer risk in study" by Agata Blaszczak-Boxe, CBS News 8/1/14

In the study, the researchers concluded that the potential increase in the risk for breast cancer varied, depending on the types of birth control pills that the women used. The use of high-dose estrogen pills was related to a 2.7-fold increase in breast cancer risk, and the use of moderate-dose estrogen was linked to a 1.6-fold increase. Pills containing ethynodiol diacetate were related to a 2.6-fold higher risk. Triphasic combination pills containing an average of 0.75 milligrams of norethindrone increased the risk 3.1-fold.

"Our results suggest that use of contemporary oral contraceptives [birth control pills] in the past year is associated with an increased breast cancer risk relative to never or former oral contraceptive use, and that this risk may vary by oral contraceptive formulation," study author Elisabeth F. Beaber, a staff scientist in the Public Health Sciences Division of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington, said in a statement.

In the study, researchers examined health records and oral contraceptive use in 1,102 women ages 20 to 49 years diagnosed with breast cancer and 21,952 women without breast cancer in the same age group. . . .

Reproductive factors associated with prolonged exposure to endogenous estrogens, such as early menarche, late menopause, late age at first childbirth are among the most important risk factors for breast cancer. Exogenous hormones also exert a higher risk for breast cancer. Oral contraceptive and hormone replacement therapy users are at higher risk than non-users. Breastfeeding has a protective effect (IARC, 2008, Lacey et al., 2009).

The differences in breast cancer incidence between developed and developing countries can partly be explained by dietary effects combined with later first childbirth, lower parity, and shorter breastfeeding (Peto, 2001). The increasing adoption of western life-style in low- and middle-income countries is an important determinant in the increase of breast cancer incidence in these countries.

From "Age at first birth and breast cancer risk" a WHO Bulletin (posted at US National Library of Medicine - National Institutes of Health)

Abstract: An international collaborative study of breast cancer and reproductive experience has been carried out in 7 areas of the world. In all areas studied, a striking relation between age at first birth and breast cancer risk was observed. It is estimated that women having their first child when aged under 18 years have only about one-third the breast cancer risk of those whose first birth is delayed until the age of 35 years or more. Births after the first, even if they occur at an early age, have no, or very little, protective effect. The reduced risk of breast cancer in women having their first child at an early age explains the previously observed inverse relationship between total parity and breast cancer risk, since women having their first birth early tend to become ultimately of high parity. The association with age at first birth requires different kinds of etiological hypotheses from those that have been invoked in the past to explain the association between breast cancer risk and reproductive experience.

UPDATE 10/30/14: From "Scientific Review Urges Doctors to Inform Women of Abortion-Breast Cancer Link" by Karen Malec, LifeNews.com

A second scientific review in 2014 has strongly urged physicians to warn patients about the abortion-breast cancer (ABC) link before an abortion and argued the evidence for a cause-effect relationship is substantial.  A. Patrick Schneider and his colleagues authored the latest review entitled, “The breast cancer epidemic: 10 facts,” for the journal, The Linacre Quarterly.

Schneider’s team said, “…having more than one risk factor compounds the risk of breast cancer via synergistic mechanisms,” meaning the risk increase the woman incurs is greater than the sum of the risks for each of her risk factors. They explained:

“The strength of the breast cancer epidemiological evidence substantiates the necessity that all females receive full and accurate informed consent before they are provided hormones, induced abortion, or both. This informed consent is especially imperative for a girl (and parent/guardian) or a young woman, who is in the pre-FFTP (first full term pregnancy) breast cancer ‘susceptibility window.’  As a family history of breast cancer, of which the child may be unaware, increases the risk for the girl considering an abortion, the presence of a parent may provide clinical information critical to accurate informed consent.”

Schneider’s team cited “evidence of an emerging breast cancer pandemic.” Noting the words of Harvard’s Professor Brian MacMahon, the “founder of modern epidemiology,” who said “many of the prevalent forms of human cancer are preventable,” and citing his landmark research, they listed other ways women raise their risk: delay (or avoidance) childbearing, reduced duration (or avoidance) of breastfeeding.

From "New study from China helps to prove the Abortion-Breast Cancer Link" by Mary L. Davenport, MD, American Thinker 12/2/13

This new article is another example of the recent excellent scholarship on abortion in peer-reviewed journals coming out of the People's Republic. There is no bigger data base than China, where there is an average of 8.2 million pregnancy terminations every year, and 40 abortions for every 100 live births. Chinese researchers and physicians are unencumbered by abortion politics, and do not cover up data showing long term effects of induced abortion, as do their US counterparts in governmental, professional and consumer organizations.

The new Chinese meta-analysis not only concerns the ABC [Abortion-Breast Cancer] link on an individual level, but also confirms the observation of statistician Patrick Carroll, who predicted the rise in breast cancer in several European countries following legalization of abortion.  Again, because of the lag time between abortion and the appearance of breast cancer, the link is not immediately apparent. Carroll's work is important because he finds that not only is induced abortion an independent risk factor for breast cancer (separate from such factors as late child-bearing) but that it is the best predictive factor for forecasting a nation's future breast cancer rates.  Nations such as China, with traditionally low breast cancer rates, are now seeing an increase, many years following their legalization of abortion.

The trend, which has yet to be explained, has raised real concerns about future efforts to treat the disease. Survival rates for young women with metastatic breast cancer are much lower than they are for older women, because the cancer tends to behave more aggressively in the young.

They hypothesized that the trend was due to a variety of lifestyle changes that have occurred during the study period. Diet, exercise, obesity, earlier onset of menstruation, use of birth control, delayed pregnancy and other factors all might play a role.

From "Advanced breast cancer rising among women under 40, study finds" by Nicole Ostrow, Bloomberg 2/27/13

Cases of advanced breast cancer among women younger than 40 have tripled in the U.S. over the last three decades, a trend that researchers said has “been increasing at a steady or even accelerating rate.”

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in 15- to 39-year- old females in the U.S. and accounts for 14 percent of all cancer in women and men in this age group, the authors wrote. Those diagnosed with the disease at a younger age have a higher risk of dying than those who are older. The national five-year survival rate for 20- to 34-year-olds diagnosed with advanced breast cancer is 31 percent, compared with 87 percent for women with less aggressive forms of the disease, researchers said.

“It’s a real phenomenon and an important one,” said Len Lichtenfeld, deputy chief medical officer for the Atlanta-based American Cancer Society. “Why it’s happening, we don’t know. We have identified that this is happening and it’s consistent over time and it’s a source of concern that we have to keep evaluating.”

From "Advanced Breast Cancer Rising in Young Women?" by Kathleen Doheny, HealthDay Reporter 2/26/13

Younger women often believe breast cancer can't happen to them, said Johnson, who had breast cancer in her 20s. When a younger woman does seek medical help for worrisome breast symptoms, she should expect the doctor to take the symptoms seriously and not suggest a prolonged period of watching and waiting. Typically, a doctor should schedule an ultrasound or mammogram screening, Johnson said.

The findings are not a reason to change current mammography screening guidelines, Johnson added. Many organizations recommend routine screenings beginning at age 40, although the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force now recommends routine mammogram screenings need not begin until age 50.

The finding does stress the importance of younger women being aware of breast changes and the importance of seeking medical attention when they find such changes, she said.

From "Do Abortions Cause Breast Cancer?" by Elaine Schattner, Slate 5/23/12

In Kansas, legislators recently passed the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act. If enacted into law, the bill would require doctors to tell pregnant women of a relationship between abortion and breast cancer. This news follows passage by the New Hampshire State House of the Women’s Right To Know Act Regarding Abortion Information. These related laws are unlikely to gain approval by the state senates. But there’s a trend: A similar measure took effect in Texas in February. Now, providers there must inform pregnant women about “the possibility of increased risk of breast cancer following an induced abortion,” the so-called ABC link.

In the decade following Roe v. Wade, the occurrence of breast tumors in the United States soared. The coincidental rise in case numbers with legalized abortions led some to speculate that terminating a pregnancy might boost a woman’s odds. The link is plausible because female hormones and fertility influence mammary growth and tumors.  . . .

Few doubt that a woman’s reproductive history influences her chances of getting breast cancer. As early as 1703, Italian physician Bernardino Ramazzini reported that nuns suffered breast tumors with relative frequency. A century ago, the British Ministry of Health commissioned Dr. Janet Clay-Laypon to examine possible roots of the malignancy. In then-innovative case-control studies, Clay-Laypon surveyed 508 breast cancer patients at English and Scottish hospitals. For controls, she questioned women with other medical conditions. Her 1926 monograph, A Further Report on Cancer of the Breast, confirmed what doctors had long suspected: Women who deliver few children and marry late are more likely to develop the disease.

From "Planned Parenthood Ignores 71 Studies Linking Abortion, Breast Cancer" by Karen Malec, President, Coalition on Abortion/Breast Cancer 1/22/13

Increased childbearing, starting before age 25, has long been known to provide significant protection against breast cancer. But, Planned Parenthood is waging a cancer war on women through its sales of induced abortions, contraceptives, abortifacients, injections, vaginal rings, skin patches, implants, IUDs and sterilizations.

Although the abortion chain acknowledges the risk reducing effects associated with having an early first full term pregnancy and breastfeeding, it contradicts itself by denying that abortion puts women at an increased risk for the disease. Planned Parenthood omits from its “fact sheet” most of the 71 epidemiologic studies reporting an independent link, meaning that abortion also raises breast cancer risk by leaving the breasts with more places for cancers to start.

Like Big Tobacco, the abortion industry will not inform women that induced abortion raises breast cancer risk. That’s why we applaud legislators in seven states that have passed informed consent legislation requiring abortionists to either provide pregnant women this information before an abortion themselves or in state health department literature.

Breast Cancer & Abortion = Komen & Planned Parenthood

The rift between the breast cancer charity, The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, and the nation's largest abortion provider, Planned Parenthood, has brought to the fore the politically incorrect causes for the rise in breast cancer rates: abortion and delayed childbirth/breast feeding.

UPDATE 10/17/12: Catholic Archdiocese: No More Money to Komen Because It Supports Planned Parenthood

-- From "Susan G. Komen foundation takes steps to rebuild trust after PR fiasco" by Lena H. Sun and Sarah Kliff, Washington Post 2/4/12

Executives of the embattled Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation held conference calls with affiliates Saturday to discuss a new strategy for working with supporters, a first step in rebuilding trust after last week’s public relations fiasco surrounding Komen’s off-then-on-again decision to fund Planned Parenthood.

The foundation reversed course Friday after the overwhelming public reaction to news on Tuesday that Komen was no longer going to fund Planned Parenthood’s breast cancer screening because of a congressional investigation into whether the group was using federal money to pay for abortions. Planned Parenthood is now eligible to apply for grants, Komen said.

Maria Williamson, president of the Komen affiliate in Virginia’s Tidewater region, said [founder Nancy G.] Brinker spoke of her “deep concern” about the community backlash and the onslaught of media inquiries that deluged Komen offices last week.

Now Komen executives are faced with the task of restoring credibility to one of the strongest brands in the nonprofit world.

From "Anti-abortion groups cite alleged cancer-abortion link to explain Komen's split with Planned Parenthood" by Judson Berger, FoxNews.com 2/2/12

As the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation faces accusations that it split with Planned Parenthood over political pressure, at least a couple pro-life groups are claiming the organization may have acted out of concern over an alleged link between abortion and breast cancer.

The theory is based on the idea that during pregnancy, the surge in hormones in a woman's body ends up making the breasts more susceptible to cancer as they increase in size. Completing a pregnancy, though, allows what are known as "lobules" in the breast to mature and become more cancer-resistant. According to the theory, having an induced abortion before this stage cuts that process short.

Komen for the Cure's website states that despite debate over the subject, "research clearly shows no link between the two." Komen asserted that position as recently as October 2011 in a brief document on the debate.

Karen Malec, president of the Coalition on Abortion/Breast Cancer, said she suspects the link -- as well as the prospect of donations [to Komen] drying up -- played a role in the decision.

From "Planned Parenthood's funding cut: Does science support abortion-cancer link?" by Loren Grush, FoxNews.com 2/2/12

[Lolita Hanks, nurse practitioner and president of American Right to Life, said] “Now that the lead National Cancer Institute [NCI] researcher on the abortion/cancer link has reversed herself and warned of abortion as a significant risk factor for breast cancer, the pro-life pressure on Planned Parenthood and Susan G. Komen is increasing.”

Dr. Rachel Wellner, director of breast services at NYEE, Continuum Cancer Center in New York City, said . . . “From a scientific perspective, pregnancy does change the breast physiology,” Wellner said. “But this is true for any sentinel event in a woman’s hormonal life, such as puberty, pregnancy, lactation, menopause, etc. So presumably when you stop a pregnancy through abortion, there may be a hormonal change.”

Wellner also added that other studies involving completed pregnancies may indicate that an aborted pregnancy may have some effect on the health of a woman’s breast.

“We know that experiencing pregnancy to its completion appears to be protective against breast cancer,” Wellner said. “We also know that nulliparity (having no children) or a late onset of a first pregnancy puts women at slightly higher risk of developing breast cancer versus their counterparts who experienced earlier pregnancies. So presumably the changes experienced in an induced abortion may invoke cellular changes that promote risk. So it does make some sense.”

From "Women fight breast cancer - and win. Dr. Ernie Bodai shares his thoughts." by Eileen Wilson, Sacramento Press 1/31/12

If you think breast cancer is all around you – be it a diagnosis, or a friend, neighbor, or loved one who has been diagnosed, you would be right. If it seems like women are developing breast cancer at a younger age than ever, you would be right about that, too.

According to the American Cancer Society, 2011 saw over 13,000 women under the age of 40, who were diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States. One thousand, one hundred and sixty of them lost their battle with the disease. When women under the age of 50 were included, the number jumped to over 65,000, with more than 5,000 women succumbing. Nationwide, a total of over 280,000 women were diagnosed with new breast cancer cases, and almost 40,000 women died.

The American Cancer Society adds that factors such as delayed childbirth, and having fewer children, as well as climbing rates of obesity and menopausal hormone use may be factors as well.

From "Komen Still Doesn’t Acknowledge Abortion-Breast Cancer Link" by Steven Ertelt, LifeNews.com 2/1/12

Malec says “Planned Parenthood is a primary cause of the breast cancer epidemic. It sells cancer-causing abortions and oral contraceptives.”

“Medical texts reveal that increased childbearing, especially starting early before age 24, substantially reduces lifetime breast cancer risk. Abortion not only deprives women of this protection, but 52 of 68 epidemiological studies show it raises breast cancer risk,” Malec explained. “Komen and the Institute of Medicine had an opportunity to reduce the incidence of breast cancer with its December 2011 study, “Breast Cancer and the Environment,” but they chose not to review reproductive risk factors and include avoidance of abortion and oral contraceptives among the ways to prevent the disease. We sincerely hope Komen will develop the political courage needed to fulfill its mission.”

The abortion-breast cancer link and the impact it has had is substantial, according to Professor Joel Brind, an endocrinologist at Baruch College in New York, who worked with several scientists on a 1996 paper published in the Journal of Epidemiol Community Health showing a “30% greater chance of developing breast cancer” for women who have induced abortions. Brind says abortion has caused at least 300,000 cases of breast cancer causing a woman’s death since the Supreme Court allowed virtually unlimited abortion in its 1973 case.

From "Komen Decision Exposes Planned Parenthood, Abortion-Breast Cancer" by Gerard Nadal, Ph.D., LifeNews.com 2/3/12

. . . The sunlight began to pierce the darkness back in 2007, when Dorinda Bordlee, Vice President and Senior Counsel of the Bioethics Defense Fund met Eve Sanchez Silver who told her about her about the Komen-Planned Parenthood funding link. Silver, a breast cancer survivor and charter member of Komen’s Hispanic/Latina Advisory Council, resigned from Komen, stating,
As a Christian and life affirming citizen I can not reconcile the Foundation’s decision to affirm life with one hand and support its destruction with the other.
Bordlee began to research Komen’s grant database to confirm Silver’s claims.

It was discovered that Komen Founder, Nancy Brinker (Susan Komen’s sister), sat on the board of Planned Parenthood in North Texas. Jill Stanek wrote two great articles about the links between Komen and PP.

At the heart of the matter lies three essential issues regarding the deplorable decision by Komen to fund PP:
1. The causal link between breast cancer and abortion (ABC link).
2. The causal link between breast cancer and oral contraceptives.
3. The fact that Planned Parenthood does NOT do mammograms.

Homosexual-focused Health Care: Obama Admin. Goal

President Obama's Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius says her HHS agency will regulate health care in a manner to shift more medical resources toward citizens engaged in sexually deviant lifestyles.

The plan includes increasing data on LGBT individuals, including “collaboration with other agencies throughout HHS, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)” in “an effort to develop and test questions on sexual orientation and gender identity.”

Protection under federal law is another item in the plan, which states that HHS will “advise” states and tribes that “LGBT couples” can be treated similarly to “non-LGBT couples” for health services and other benefits such as child care and “Temporary Assistance for Needy Families.”

Wisconsin Shifts Money Away from Planned Parenthood

The Wisconsin Department of Health and Services plans to pull $130,000 in funding from Planned Parenthood in favor of funding "well woman care" through other organizations that do not perform abortions. In response, Planned Parenthood advocates have perpetuated a deceptive media campaign to imply that they provide myriad breast cancer prevention, when in fact they do not.

[This] comes months after the state Legislature passed a biennial budget this summer that included language designed to strip Planned Parenthood of access to public dollars.

A bill Walker signed redirects $1 million in state and federal family planning funds away from Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin. In 2010 Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin received more than $18 million in federal and state family planning funds that it claims has reduced abortions. From "Pro-life advocates: Study shows link between breast cancer and abortion; cancer institute: no way" by Caroline May, Daily Caller 11/29/11

Pro-life advocates have argued for years that abortion increases the risk of breast cancer — due to hormonal changes during pregnancy which leave breasts more vulnerable to cancer. Despite their advocacy, the Department of Health and Human Services denies that there is any link.

On Monday the Coalition on Abortion/Breast Cancer pointed to a new study which found a nearly 3-fold increase in the risk of breast cancer among Armenian women who had an abortion as yet another reason women should steer clear of the procedure.

The report, “Influence of Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 and Prolonged Estrogen Exposure on Risk of Breast Cancer Among Women in Armenia” published in Taylor & Francis was authored by Lilit Khachatryan of the Department of Public Health at the American University of Armenia. The study included researchers from the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health and the University of Pennsylvania.

[Study researchers] Robert Scharpfb is from the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health and Sarah Kagan is from the School of Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania.

The study, published in Taylor & Francis, also found that delaying a first full-term pregnancy, which is frequently done by women having abortions, also raises the breast cancer risk wheras giving birth resulted in a 64% reduced risk.

Khachatryan’s team reported a statistically significant 13% increased breast cancer risk for every one year delay of a first full term pregnancy (FFTP), with delayed FFTPs until ages 21-30 or after age 30 resulting in 2.21-fold and 4.95-fold increased risks respectively. On the other hand, women with FFTPs before age 20 did not see a comparable breast cancer risk.

Karen Malec of the Coalition on Abortion/Breast Cancer said she is not surprised by the findings because, “Fifty-four of 67 epidemiological studies since 1957 report an abortion-breast cancer link (not counting biological and experimental evidence).”

From "Study of Armenian Women Shows Increased Breast Cancer Risk for those who have aborted" by Dave Andrusko, National Right to Life News Today 11/30/11

. . . as is so often the case with these studies, the authors attempt mightily to excuse away or at least minimize their own findings.

For example, Khachatryan’s team flatly states, “Most evidence (of an abortion-breast cancer link)…points to no effect.” This is simply false, as Dr. Joel Brind, writing in National Right to Life News, has explained over and over and over again. In fact since 1957, 51 of 68 epidemiological studies have reported an ABC link.

Besides stating a patent untruth, Khachatryan’s team invokes the other tactic most commonly used to explain away the connection: invoking “recall bias.” This bizarre notion argues that the only reason that women who have had abortions have a higher incidence of breast cancer is that more women with breast cancer accurately report their past abortions than do healthy women. It is worth noting that Khachatryan’s team offers no citation, almost as if none were needed!

“Dr. Brind concluded that Khachatryan’s team ‘did not–and perhaps were not allowed to–characterize their findings honestly in the politically correct atmosphere of the U.S. and Europe. The good news is that they were able to report their findings in a prominent peer-reviewed journal at all.’”

College Censors Abortion-Breast Cancer Link

Ohio's Sinclair Community College punished a student for handing out pro-life pamphlets to other students, issuing a statement saying that nearly the entire campus is off limits to pamphlet distribution.

The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education [FIRE] said Sinclair banned student Ethel Borel-Donohue from distributing fliers linking abortion and birth control to cancer.

In October, Borel-Donohue distributed about 15 fliers to fellow students after a class, according to the foundation.

The foundation in February sent a letter to Sinclair President Steven Lee Johnson saying that campus policies can’t lawfully be extended to restrict all distribution of literature outside of class time. The group cited a 1979 federal district court decision against Ohio State University that said absent “material disruption” or “substantial disorder,” the distribution of literature on campus is student expression protected by the First Amendment, even if students complain about the content of the message distributed.

The pamphlets, published by a Catholic organization, asserted overwhelming evidence that abortion and oral contraceptives substantially increase a woman's risk of developing breast cancer.

But the chairman of the department, Michael Brigner, censored the material from all class areas after a complaint from a fellow student who had had an abortion. And in doing so, he revealed Sinclair's broad constraints on free speech, which go well beyond the classroom and this particular incident.

"Literature may not be distributed in working areas, including: classrooms, laboratories, lecture halls, gymnasiums, libraries, offices, work stations, conference rooms, and corridors leading directly thereto which are an integral part of the work areas."

U.S. District Judge Mary McLaughlin is siding with students in a free-speech test case filed by the American Civil Liberties Union. McLaughlin issued a temporary injunction Tuesday that bars the Easton Area School District [in eastern Pennsylvania] from enforcing its ban on the $4 rubber bracelets.

McLaughlin heard testimony from Easton middle school students in December. She finds the bracelets are being worn to promote breast cancer awareness.

Easton school officials argue the slogan suggests a sexual double meaning and leads to in-school distractions. Easton is one of several school districts around the country to ban the bracelets.

Most prominently, Planned Parenthood CEO Cecile Richards recently appeared on The Joy Behar Show to oppose the Pence Amendment to end Planned Parenthood’s taxpayer subsidies, claiming, ‘If this bill ever becomes law, millions of women in this country are gonna lose their healthcare access — not to abortion services — to basic family planning, you know, mammograms.’”

But a Planned Parenthood spokesman denied that the organization claimed to offer mammograms, saying the transcript of the show clearly shows Richards was referring to the overall effect of on women’s health services if the health overhaul legislation was repealed and not specifically the effect of defunding her group.
