President Jimmy Carter has decided, over thirty years after holding the highest office of the land, that it would be politically advantageous for the Democrat party to drop its vehement support for abortion, but nonetheless, he says the Roe v. Wade ruling should stand.

Appearing on “The Laura Ingraham Show” Thursday to promote his book “NIV Lessons from Life Bible: Personal Reflections with Jimmy Carter,” former President Jimmy Carter addressed the ever-hot topic of abortion — encouraging fellow Democrats to tone down their focus on the issue.

“I never have believed that Jesus Christ would approve of abortions and that was one of the problems I had when I was president having to uphold Roe v. Wade and I did everything I could to minimize the need for abortions,” he said, explaining his attempts to streamline adoption and provide aid to poor women through the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children [WIC].

Carter, who does not believe abortions should be outlawed, told Ingraham that he is calling on Democrats to de-emphasize abortion in the party platform.

“I’ve signed a public letter calling for the Democratic Party at the next convention to espouse my position on abortion which is to minimize the need, requirement for abortion and limit it only to women whose life are in danger or who are pregnant as a result of rape or incest,” he said.

In August 2008, the Democratic Party approved a platform that mirrors President Barack Obama’s pro-abortion views.

“The Democratic Party strongly and unequivocally supports Roe v. Wade and a woman’s right to choose a safe and legal abortion, regardless of ability to pay, and we oppose any and all efforts to weaken or undermine that right,” the platform reads.

The party has removed any language calling for abortions to be “rare,” or even “safe,” preferring to concentrate on keeping them legal.

The final aspect of the language hearkens to Obama’s pledge to Planned Parenthood in a July 2007 speech saying his first action as president would be signing the so-called Freedom of Choice Act. That’s a Congressional bill that would overturn every abortion limit nationwide from a ban on partial-birth abortions to parental notification laws.

In Illinois, the so-called Reproductive Health and Access Act (RHAA) was re-filed Thursday, (February 11th) by chief sponsor Rep. Barbara Flynn Currie (D-25th), and designated as House Bill 6205.

House Bill 6205, the RHAA, is the most radically pro-abortion bill ever proposed in the State of Illinois. Because of its similarity to the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) favored by abortion advocates in Washington D.C., HB6205 has become known as “Illinois FOCA.”

HB6205 establishes abortion as a fundamental right, sweeping away all state restrictions on abortion. A weak exception is made for parental notification, but that wording could easily be changed at a later time.

HB6205 establishes a regime under which a woman could sue any government entity for “interfering with her access to abortion”. This could mean, for example, that a woman could sue a county hospital for not providing her with an abortion, which could lead to every county hospital in Illinois being forced to provide abortions.

HB6205 rescinds local control over sex-ed, mandating comprehensive sex-ed “condom training” in elementary and high school, even for children as young as kindergarten.

An anti-abortion Democrat on Monday said he is negotiating a compromise aimed at resolving concerns that House health-care legislation would allow federal funding of abortions.

Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Mich., said he is in talks with Energy and Commerce Chairman Henry Waxman, D-Calif., on the language. Stupak said his and Waxman's staff discussed the issue over the weekend and suggested that a compromise could be voted on this week as an amendment to a health-care bill under consideration by the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

A group of 20 House Democrats signed a letter sent last Friday to House Democratic leaders stating they "cannot support any health care reform proposal unless it explicitly excludes abortion from the scope of any government-defined or subsidized health insurance plan."

“Despite President Obama’s statement to the pope just last week that he wants to reduce abortion, the ugly truth is that the so-called health care reform bill, if enacted and if not amended, will lead to millions of additional dead children and wounded mothers,” Smith said.

Legislators withdraw their sponsorship after citizens' public protest

The Illinois version of the radical Freedom of Choice Act that Congress may eventually consider has been defeated. Today [April 3rd] was the last day for the state House to vote on the bill, known as the Reproductive Health and Access Act, and it failed to do so.

House Bill 2354 will not be called for a vote today [April 3rd] and, as a result, it will die for the legislative session. Abortion advocates will have to file the bill again next session for it to be considered once more.

"All our hard work has paid off," Eric Scheidler of the Pro-Life Action League, one of the pro-life groups working to defeat the bill, told LifeNews.com. "The phone calls, letters, petitions and protests sent a crystal clear message to our state representatives."

Though the state version is dead for now, the federal FOCA bill is still a concern.

A spokesman for Rep. Jerrold Nadler, a New York Democrat who is chairman of a House Judiciary subcommittee that could consider the bill, said last month the bill is forthcoming.

FOCA would make legal all abortions throughout pregnancy for any reason and overturn hundreds of pro-life laws in every state across the country.

Pending legislation that deals with sex education and what information patients receive has mobilized both sides of the abortion issue in McHenry County [Illinois].

Supporters say that the Reproductive Health and Access Act guarantees that people have accurate information related to health care options and provides for comprehensive, age-appropriate sex education. Opponents say the legislation would compromise religious freedoms and lead to taxpayer funded abortions.

Opponents held a prayer vigil and picketed 63rd District State Rep. Jack Franks’ Woodstock office Saturday.

Catholic church leaders also are speaking out against the legislation.

Joliet Catholic Bishop J. Peter Sartain, in a letter to church members, took issue with how the law deals with doctors who conscientiously object to abortion or other reproductive health issues.

“Our state should be defending our freedom of religion, not requiring individual citizens to defend their right to that freedom,” Sartain wrote.

Rep. Mark Beaubien, R-District 52 . . . is not only supporting HB 2354, he’s co-sponsoring this terrible bill. With this bill, health care professionals may be forced against their own conscience to provide access to abortion, there will be elimination of parental notification of abortion, partial birth abortions will be legal, and taxpayers will be forced to fund abortions. Illinois is in a fiscal crisis, and this Republican is advocating expansion of government to include forcing taxpayers to foot the bill for a procedure that is viscerally offensive to most Americans.

Beaubien’s support of HB 2354 is offensive to any fiscal conservative and immoral to any social conservative. As a physician, I find it also contrary to the Hippocratic Oath. It’s time for Republicans to dump Beaubien.

Obama Pressured to Advance Abortion and Sexualization of Children

A coalition of pro-abortion groups has submitted a proposal of steps President-elect Barack Obama can take during his first 100 days in office to advance a pro-abortion agenda.

The 50-plus-page document, “Advancing Reproductive Rights and Health in a New Administration,” is a laundry list of actions that the coalition says president-elect Barack Obama should put in place to “advance a reproductive health agenda that will make a profound difference in the lives and health of women, men and family in the United States and around the world.”

The actions the document calls for partly include [increasing federal funding of Planned Parenthood by more than double; funding of abortions for Medicaid-eligible women, federal employees, etc.; de-funding abstinence-only programs; removing age restrictions for over-the-counter emergency contraceptives; and more.]

[Also, the document] calls on Congress to pass the Freedom of Choice Act [FOCA], which would strike down all state and federal laws that restrict abortion and make federally funded abortions available in all 50 states.

Cardinal to Politicians: Vote for Abortion? You're Excommunicated!

Catholic members of Congress who vote for the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) could face “automatic excommunication” if the act is determined to be “formal cooperation” in the evil of abortion.

When asked last week whether a Catholic politician voting for the FOCA – which would impose nationwide abortion on demand and government funding of abortion – would incur automatic excommunication from the Catholic Church, Cardinal Francis George of Chicago said the question would need to be discussed once the actual language of the bill was known.

George is president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).

“The categories in moral theology about cooperating in evil, which make you complicit in the evil even though you don’t do it yourself, are material cooperation, which is usually remote and therefore doesn’t involve you in the moral action except in a very auxiliary and minor way, and formal cooperation, which would involve you even though you are not doing it, in the way that makes you culpable,” said George.

President-elect Barack Obama promised in his campaign to sign FOCA. As introduced in the current Congress, FOCA denies all federal, state and local governments the power to interfere with a woman’s “choice” to abort a baby, and prohibits “discriminating against the exercise of those rights in the regulation or provision of benefits, facilities, services, or information.”

Fr. Frank Pavone of the Priests for Life told CNSNews.com: “Any legislator who would vote for such an extreme piece of pro-abortion legislation [FOCA], and any executive who would sign it or judge who would uphold it, or even a citizen who would lobby in any way in favor of it, would be committing a serious sin, objectively speaking. It is cooperation with evil in a totally unjustified way.”

Dr. Mark Miravalle, a theology professor at the Franciscan University of Steubenville, said of a Catholic politician voting for FOCA, “I think you would have to conclude that it would be a formal act, a formal cooperation [in the act of abortion].”

The purpose of FOCA, he continued, “is to ensure the right of a woman to have an abortion.”

When asked about a pro-abortion Catholic politician seeking to receive Holy Communion, Dr. Mark Miravalle said, “Canonically, based on scandal, and based on proper protection of the Eucharist, no pro-abortion, pro-choice Catholic politician should be admitted to receive Holy Communion.”

Children's Defense Fund Won't Defend Unborn

The CDF, led by Marian Wright Edelman, will not take a position on the Freedom of Choice Act

The Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) is proposed federal legislation that would remove nearly all restrictions on abortion, and President-elect Barack Obama has said that one of his first steps as president will be to sign FOCA into law.

“The Children’s Defense Fund has never taken a position for or against abortion,” said Edelman. “We don’t think we’ve got anything to add to that debate. We’re concerned with the children who are here – and I want both pro-choice and pro-life people to make sure that every child that comes here can have a safe and decent and safe life, and I stay functioning on that line. So I don’t have a position on that.”

Edelman was honored Monday at the National Press Club by U.S. News and World Report as one of "America's Best Leaders" in 2008 for her work with the Children’s Defense Fund. According to its Web site, the CDF is a non-profit child advocacy organization that has “worked relentlessly for 35 years to ensure a level playing field for all children.”

The Freedom of Choice Act would abolish all federal, state, and local restrictions and limitations on abortion prior to “fetal viability.” In the Senate, the bill was sponsored by Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), and co-sponsored by Sens. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) and Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) among others.

Catholic Bishops' Statement Warns Obama on Abortion

"Aggressively pro-abortion policies, legislation and executive orders will permanently alienate tens of millions of Americans, and would be seen by many as an attack on the free exercise of their religion."

In a direct challenge to President-elect Barack Obama, America's Roman Catholic bishops vowed on Tuesday [November 11th] to accept no compromise for the sake of national unity until there is legal protection for the unborn.

About 300 bishops, gathered in Baltimore for their national meeting, adopted a formal blessing for a child in the womb and advised Chicago's Cardinal Francis George, president of the conference, as he began drafting a statement from the bishops to the incoming Obama administration. That document will call on the administration and Catholics who supported Obama to work to outlaw abortion.

"This is not a matter of political compromise or a matter of finding some way of common ground," said Bishop Daniel Conlon of Steubenville, Ohio. "It's a matter of absolutes."

Several bishops said that Catholics could not in good conscience vote for a candidate who favored abortion rights after Obama pledged to pass legislation that would overturn state's restrictions on abortion such as late-term abortion bans and requirements of parental consent.

Bishops Thomas Paprocki of Chicago said such legislation could threaten laws that allow health-care workers to refrain from carrying out procedures that violate their conscience, putting Catholic health care institutions in jeopardy.

George agreed that losing federal funds would put Catholic health care facilities, which make up a third of the nation's hospitals, out of business. Closing Catholic hospitals would put many patients seeking charitable care from those facilities at risk, he added.

In crafting the statement to Obama, the bishops urged the cardinal to indicate a desire to work with the administration in areas of economic justice, immigration reform, health care for the poor and religious freedom. But they stressed the church's "intent on opposing evil" and "defense of the unborn child."

Under Obama, Taxpayers will Fund Abortion

Reversal is anticipated on the Kemp-Kasten Amendment, which states no U.S. funds “may be made available to any organization or program which, as determined by the President of the United States, supports or participates in the management of a program of coercive abortion or involuntary sterilization.”

Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) said she is confident that President-elect Barack Obama will reverse the Bush administration’s decision six years ago to stop the $40 million in annual funding to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) because of its support of China’s one-child policy – a policy that includes coercive abortion.

In July, Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte submitted a letter along with a report explaining the U.S. decision not to fund UNFPA for the sixth year in a row.

“The United States opposes coercive abortion and involuntary sterilization. I have determined that by providing financial and technical resources … to [China’s] National Population and Family Planning Commission and related entities, UNFPA provides support for and participates in the management of the Chinese government’s program of coercive abortion and involuntary sterilization,” he wrote.

During his campaign, Obama said he supports the 1973 Supreme Court Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion in the United States.

He also promised Planned Parenthood that he would sign into law the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA), which strikes down all federal and state restrictions on abortion, including the ban on partial-birth abortion, and will establish abortion-on-demand in every state and the U.S. territories.

Obama also has said he supports “comprehensive sex education” in public schools that would include abstinence and information on “safe sex” practices.

The leading abortion rights organizations in America say they are confident that Barack Obama will push for their full agenda, including passage of the Freedom of Choice Act, comprehensive sex ed and “reproductive rights” that include “affordable" birth control.

Planned Parenthood, NARAL (National Abortion Rights Action League) Pro-Choice America, and the Center for Reproductive Rights have each publicly congratulated the new president-elect on his victory.

Barack Obama, and that hard work resulted in the reaffirmation of our commitment to the values of freedom and privacy,” Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America said in a statement.

Obama was the most pro-abortion presidential candidate in history.

In a speech to Planned Parenthood on the 35th anniversary of Roe v. Wade -- the Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion – Obama said: “Throughout my career, I’ve been a consistent and strong supporter of reproductive justice, and have consistently had a 100 percent pro-choice rating with Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice America.”

Obama also pledged to push for the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) as president. FOCA was introduced in 2004, “to prohibit, consistent with Roe v. Wade, the interference by the government with a woman’s right to choose to bear a child or terminate a pregnancy, and for other purposes.”

The proposal would overturn all existing state regulations on abortion and partial-birth abortion, if enacted.

Now it is up to the president-elect to make good on his promises, the abortion groups say.
