In just the past few months, several Bay Area so-called health clinics have closed entirely, while others are regrouping to keep the doors open, as funding dries up.

Planned Parenthood, Haight Ashbury Free Clinics and Lyon-Martin Health Services are just some of the San Francisco centers involved in the shakeup. Many of these clinics are getting squeezed by funding cuts from private and public sources while demand for their services from increasing numbers of uninsured patients is rising.
Major changes in the health clinics started last fall when the local Planned Parenthood affiliate lost the right to use the name because of its financial problems, a decision that left San Francisco, San Mateo, Marin, Sonoma and Alameda counties without any Planned Parenthood clinics for several months.
Lyon-Martin Health Services, which serves transgender people and women in San Francisco, has been teetering on the brink of closure for months and recently hired a new interim director to try to turn things around.
New Leaf, another center serving lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender residents in San Francisco, closed in October after being hit with increased rent and health care costs. It provided mainly mental health, substance abuse and HIV/AIDS services.

Golden Gate Health Community (GGCH), a former Planned Parenthood affiliate and major provider of abortion services in the San Francisco Bay Area, will close all of its facilities this month.
The organization, which was formerly known as Planned Parenthood of Golden Gate, changed its name last year when it lost its affiliation with Planned Parenthood amid suspicions of financial mismanagement.
As a Planned Parenthood affiliate, the group made headlines in 2003 when it was implicated in the death of 18-year-old Holly Patterson, who died of septic shock after taking the RU-486 abortion drug. After experiencing severe cramping, bleeding, and vomiting, Patterson was initially told by the clinic to take more painkillers. She was eventually hospitalized and died three days later.
The organization has also drawn attention for its controversial advertisements mocking religion and depicting pro-life demonstrators being shot by a “superhero for choice,” and for its role in defeating California ballot initiatives requiring parental notification for abortions performed on minors.

“Golden Gate Community Health, formerly known as Planned Parenthood Golden Gate, closed its operations on February 28, 2011 after almost 90 years of service to the Bay Area,” said a March 1 news release from the organization. “Golden Gate Community Health operated health centers in Alameda, San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin Counties. The closing was caused, in part, by delays in State patient reimbursements and diminished donor support.”
When its former affiliate renamed itself and continued operating under the name Golden Gate Community Health, it set up a showdown with Planned Parenthood for millions of dollars in state and federal funding. Planned Parenthood divided up Golden Gate’s former territory between Planned Parenthood Mar Monte, based in San Jose, and Planned Parenthood Shasta Pacific, based in Concord. Part of Planned Parenthood Shasta Pacific’s new territory included San Francisco. Planned Parenthood Mar Monte expanded Planned Parenthood operations into Alameda and San Mateo counties, also once a part of Planned Parenthood Golden Gate’s turf.

Abortion is Election Issue with Some Candidates
The "hot button" issue of abortion is trumpeted by a minority of candidates -- even some Republicans with a pro-life record avoid the issue. Yet, pro-life organizations continue to back such stealth pro-life candidates, as some social conservative strategists believe it's a losing position.
Voters should scrutinize their local candidates' positions; some previously pro-life politicians have wiped "abortion" from their websites.

Anthony List,] will be targeting Ohio Rep. Steve Driehaus and Indiana Reps. Joe Donnelly and Brad Ellsworth, who is running for Senate. Musgrave said Rep. Alan Mollohan of West Virginia was also a target of her campaign, and he was defeated in the Democratic primary by anti-abortion candidate Mike Oliverio.
Meanwhile, Democrats for Life has launched a website aimed at refuting mischaracterizations about the law and highlighting the Whole-Life Heroes, the 16 anti-abortion Democrats who backed the reform bill.
David Kozak, a political scientist at Gannon University in Erie, Pa., said the outcome of the abortion skirmish could have an impact on the race.
As with many things in politics, money could influence the effectiveness of the issue campaigns.

Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, a leading abortion rights group, called the Obama administration's exclusion of abortion coverage from newly created high-risk pools "wrongheaded and inexplicable."
[Norman Ornstein of the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative-leaning think tank] added, however, that in an election cycle dominated by the sluggish economy and high unemployment, abortion will have little impact when voters go to the polls in November.
"This is not going to be the factor that determines these elections, even at the margins," he said. What will "is a combination of the pessimism that people are feeling about the state of the world."

Haiti: Planned Parenthood Appeals to Increase Death Toll
Days after the devastating Jan. 12 earthquake, the International Planned Parenthood Federation Western Hemisphere Region (IPPF/WHR) sent out a fundraising appeal to help rebuild two clinics that were destroyed in Port-au-Prince and Jacmel.

The clinics are operated by PROFAMIL, a "member association" that provides "sexual and reproductive health services," including abortions. The fundraising post said that PROFAMIL is setting up a temporary stationary clinic and mobile-health units to provide "basic first aid, as well as obstetric care and family planning."
Outrage over the appeal quickly spread through the pro-life community and its related blogs. Rita Diller, national director of Stop Planned Parenthood, said on LifeSiteNews.com that the group was "using the disaster and the suffering in Haiti to raise money to perpetuate itself."
Defenders of Planned Parenthood insisted that critics were jumping to the wrong conclusions. Dawn Stacey, a former Planned Parenthood pregnancy-options counselor who now serves as About.com's contraception expert, said on her blog that the mobile units would "bring needed services to people who are totally isolated."
. . . Planned Parenthood has a history of using natural disasters to promote its agenda. After Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans in 2005, Planned Parenthood offered free emergency contraception, better known as "morning-after" pills, to terminate pregnancies.
After the Sept. 11 terrorist attack, Planned Parenthood of New York City offered 12 days of free reproductive health services, including abortions, emergency contraception, HIV and STD testing, and counseling.

"By honoring a mother in your life with a gift to the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, you'll be making a gift that protects and advocates for the health of millions of mothers and families."

“Once again, the generosity of the American people is one of the great untold stories of our time,” Bush said in announcing the proposed funding increase. “Our citizens are offering comfort to millions who suffer and restoring hope to those who feel forsaken.”
Even prior to the announced doubling of PEPFAR funding the AIDS relief plan was the largest commitment ever by any nation for an international health initiative dedicated to a single disease. PEPFAR has made available antiretroviral drugs to literally hundreds of thousands of AIDS sufferers since its inception, and has helped prevent AIDS infection in countless others.
At the same time as Bush has announced the unprecedented increase in funding for PEPFAR however, a number of senators, led by Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) have introduced a bill that, if passed, would strike down a PEPFAR requirement that says that a certain amount of the program’s funds must be spent on abstinence education and promotion.
...since the initiation of the program in 2003 pro-abortion/contraception/family-planning organizations have repeatedly accused the Bush administration of ideological bias and of hindering the fight against AIDS by requiring that money be spent on what they believe are ineffective abstinence programs. Instead these groups call for the widespread provision of condoms as the most effective means of prevention.

Pro-life/pro-family advocates, on the other hand, point towards the consistent success that abstinence education has had in lowering the infection rates, and point out the serious dangers of pushing condom use as a primary means of fighting AIDS, given the failure rate of condoms. In 2003 the United Nations AIDS agency (UNAIDS) admitted that condoms have a significantly high failure rate in protecting wearers from the transmission of AIDS.
In Uganda, on the other hand, where abstinence was stressed as the primary means of AIDS prevention and the use of a condom as a last alternative, AIDS rates fell dramatically. Pro-family advocates are wondering why the very small abstinence requirement is being contested when it has obviously helped save so many lives.
... A serious concern about the Bush initiated AIDS program is that the United States’ Global AIDS Coordinator, with the role of leading the implementation of President Bush’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, is Mark Dybul, an active and “open” homosexual.
Dybul was sworn in by Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice October 10, while his homosexual “partner”, Jason Claire, held the Bible.
