Researchers have previously created live baby mice using engineered eggs and sperm, but until now have struggled to create a human version of these ‘primordial germ’ or stem cells.
The team has compared the engineered germ cells with natural human stem cells taken from aborted human foetuses to check that the artificially created versions of the cells had identical characteristics, ‘The Times’ reported.
“We have also discovered that one of the things that happens in these germ cells is that epigenetic mutations, the cell mistakes that occur with age, are wiped out,” said Surani, who was involved in research that led to the birth of Louise Brown, the world’s first test-tube baby, in 1978.
Jacob Hanna, the specialist leading the project’s Israeli arm, said it may be possible to use the technique to create a baby in just two years.

Jacob Hanna, from the Weizmann Institute, added: "It has already caused interest from gay groups because of the possibility of making egg and sperm cells from parents of the same sex."
However, he said they are aware of the vast ethical concerns their findings raise in terms of the potential for designer babies: "I am not in favour of creating engineered humans and the social and ethical implications need to be thought through."

Supreme Court: Homosexual Behavior Illegal in India
India's Supreme Court ruled that the historical law against homosexual sex shall remain in place in the world's largest democracy unless or until the Parliament changes such laws. The highest court decision negated a lower court ruling from 2009 that decriminalized homosexual behavior.

Worldwide Abortion: The War on Girls
In her new book "Unnatural Selection," Science writer Mara Hvistendahl examines how the trend toward choosing boys over girls through sex-selective abortions has spread through the developing world, particularly in Asia.

But exported to Asia and eastern Europe they have been intricately linked to an explosion of sex selection and a mushrooming of female abortions. Hvistendahl claims western governments actively promoted abortion and sex selection in the developing world, encouraging the liberalization of abortion laws and subsidizing sales of ultrasounds as a form of population control.
Moreover, she also blames the UNFPA, the UN's main population agency, for refusing to own up to its role in funding sex-selection.

In nature, 105 boys are born for every 100 girls. This ratio is biologically ironclad. Between 104 and 106 is the normal range, and that's as far as the natural window goes. Any other number is the result of unnatural events.
Yet today in India there are 112 boys born for every 100 girls. In China, the number is 121—though plenty of Chinese towns are over the 150 mark. China's and India's populations are mammoth enough that their outlying sex ratios have skewed the global average to a biologically impossible 107. But the imbalance is not only in Asia. Azerbaijan stands at 115, Georgia at 118 and Armenia at 120.
What is causing the skewed ratio: abortion. If the male number in the sex ratio is above 106, it means that couples are having abortions when they find out the mother is carrying a girl. By Ms. Hvistendahl's counting, there have been so many sex-selective abortions in the past three decades that 163 million girls, who by biological averages should have been born, are missing from the world. Moral horror aside, this is likely to be of very large consequence.

In 1979 China signed a $50m four-year deal with a UN body designed to help it control its spiralling population through family planning. It was the largest foreign aid package Beijing had accepted in almost 20 years.
But the funds became entwined in China's one-child policy that was just taking hold, and instead of sponsoring an education drive for small families, the money was used to pay for posters in Chinese villages proclaiming "You can abort it! But you cannot give birth to it."
The story of the complicity of the UNFPA, the UN's main population agency, in the tyranny of China's forced abortion policy is just one of the examples given in [Hvistendahl's] book that explores western involvement in what has become a modern scourge: sex selection.
"It took millions of dollars in funding from US organisations for sex determination and abortion to catch on in the developing world," she writes.

Obama on Jihad: Islam is a Great Religion
Responding to a question at a "town hall" meeting with students at St. Xavier College in Mumbai, India, President Obama satisfied Islamists and pundits in India, but his own explanation of jihad and the greatness of Islam plays differently with American victims of terrorist attacks:
"The phrase Jihad has a lot of meaning within Islam. Islam is one of the world's great religions and more than a billion people who practise Islam, an overwhelming majority, view their obligations to their religion as the one that reaffirms peace, justice and fairness," the President responded.

In their opinion Obama's comments on jihad at Mumbai's St Xavier's College earlier in the day was a clear attempt at separating the violent campaign from the basic concept of jihad.
"Jihad can in no way assume the form of violence against the innocent and those who are perpetrating such violent acts have done great disservice to Islam," said Kamal Farooqi, a prominent member of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board. "To that extent President Obama is correct," he said.

Mr. Obama’s short performance came after student dancers doing a show for him implored him to join in.

Sexualized Society = Meaninglessness of Life
Personal and economic freedom of young adults in India has resulted in rampant unmarried sex and abortion, including use of abortifacients.

Doctors report that use of the ["morning after"] I-pill, which can prevent pregnancy if taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex, is soaring. But they also worry that young women are misusing the pill by taking it too often or in place of contraceptives.
Many young women report using the emergency contraceptive pills several times a month instead of using condoms, increasing the risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases, gynecologists say. This year, dozens of ads for the I-pill, also known worldwide as the morning-after pill, have flooded Indian TV channels, highway billboards and women's magazines.
Many gynecologists and health workers say that the pills have helped women avoid abortions, which are legal in India but are often performed by untrained workers in unsanitary conditions. Health workers say the pill's availability also empowers women, who face many hurdles in the country's tradition-bound, patriarchal culture.
As many as 7 million abortions are performed in India annually, and more than 20,000 women die of botched abortions each year, according to the Mumbai-based Federation of Obstetric and Gynecological Societies of India. The group says that the number of deaths is probably higher in reality because many families and health workers are afraid to report them.
Few restrictions have been placed on the pill's availability. In interviews, several high school and college students in New Delhi and Mumbai said they were using I-pills but not informing their parents. More than 70 percent of India's population of 1.16 billion is younger than 35.

Global investment in family planning and female education could slow down global population growth, reducing future emissions and tackling climate change vulnerability.
Demographic factors will play a significant role in determining future emissions. The most obvious such factor is the global population, which is expected to rise to around nine billion by 2050.
Rising population is significant not only as a driver of emissions but also as a key factor in determining the vulnerability of developing countries to the impacts of global warming. In almost all of the climate change adaptation plans submitted to the United Nations by least-developed countries, rapid population growth is mentioned as something that either exacerbates vulnerability or impedes adaption. More than half of these least-developed countries will at least double in population by the middle of the century.
Ensuring universal access to family planning services and investing in female education is a pivotal climate change solution, Louise Carver of the Population and Sustainability Network (PSN) told the the Manchester panel. Some green activists have long advocated a greater focus on population control in the climate change campaign.
In a position paper adopted by its board of directors in November 2007, the Sierra Club said, “Given the grave implications of population growth, the Sierra Club urges greater effort to explain how population pressure is affecting the environment and stronger support for the program – family planning, health care, and education and opportunity for women – that most effectively encourages smaller families.”
Identifying an average of two children per family as a requirement to stabilize the world population, the paper said the Sierra Club “welcomes non-coercive, culturally sensitive policies that will help lower birth rates, stabilize global population, and make a smaller population a realistic possibility.”
In 2007, an Australian academic argued that a government campaign to encourage bigger families was flying in the face of the fight against climate change.
Rather than offering couples financial incentives to have more children, he said, a tax should be levied on parents who have more than an agreed number of children, “in line with the ‘polluter pays’ principle.”
The Chinese government, which enforces a controversial and often coercive birth limitation policy, has listed its population control efforts among its contributions to combating climate change.

Global investment in family planning and female education could slow down global population growth, reducing future emissions and tackling climate change vulnerability.
Demographic factors will play a significant role in determining future emissions. The most obvious such factor is the global population, which is expected to rise to around nine billion by 2050.
Rising population is significant not only as a driver of emissions but also as a key factor in determining the vulnerability of developing countries to the impacts of global warming. In almost all of the climate change adaptation plans submitted to the United Nations by least-developed countries, rapid population growth is mentioned as something that either exacerbates vulnerability or impedes adaption. More than half of these least-developed countries will at least double in population by the middle of the century.
Ensuring universal access to family planning services and investing in female education is a pivotal climate change solution, Louise Carver of the Population and Sustainability Network (PSN) told the the Manchester panel. "Disappearing Daughters", a new book by an Indian woman journalist, Gita Aravamudhan, published by Penguin Books, calls "female foeticide" "an organized crime."
"The ultrasound machine has mutated into an instrument of murder," she said. Aravamudhan writes in the preface that the book started as a journalistic "story" like any other, but soon escalated into the biggest issue she had ever investigated. "Female infanticide is akin to serial killing. But female foeticide was more like a holocaust. A whole gender is getting exterminated."
A recent report by UNICEF said India kills almost 7,000 girls per day by abortion. Recent statistics show that the population of India is heavily weighted towards males with only 927 females for every 1,000 males, a contrast from the usual 1050 females in other countries. UK-based medical journal, the Lancet estimates the number of girls killed by abortion in India at 10 million over the last 20 years.
It is a silent and smoothly executed crime," Aravamudhan writes, "which leaves no waves in its wake. It is happening while we, as a nation, slumber. In some parts of the country almost two generations of women have been exterminated before I completed this book and there is still no solution in sight."In an interview with The Hindu, Aravamudhan, described as a writer on "gender" issues for 27 years, said she was shocked to find that female "foeticide" was most common among the wealthy and well educated.
"Foeticide happened among the rich, the powerful, the educated; those who were aware of family planning!…There was a deep link between female foeticide and factors like wealth, education, success of family planning, and medical progress," she said.
With most international aid organisations working in India pushing abortion and smaller families, a book such as this contrasts with official government-sponsored population control campaigns. LifeSiteNews.com editor John Henry Westen, during a trip to India last year, reported that even among the strongly Catholic Christian population of Kerala, small families are considered "moral."
Westen interviewed Sunny Kattukaran, the leader of a pro-life group in India known as Trust God (Pro-Life) Ministry, who laid the blame squarely on western-based population control movements.
"The Americans, the UN and other funding agents, when they release some funds as loans they ask our statistics on birth control, and insist on family planning criteria, only then do they pump money," Kattukaran said.
It also looks like health clinics are participating in the genocide by killing newborn baby girls...

The Indian government plans to set up a series of orphanages to raise unwanted baby girls in a bid to halt the widespread practice of aborting female fetuses, according to a senior government official.
Dubbed the "cradle scheme," the plan is an attempt to slow the practice that international groups say has killed more than 10 million female fetuses in the last two decades, leading to an alarming imbalance in the ratio between males and females in India, Renuka Chowdhury, the minister of state for women and child development, told the Press Trust of India news agency in an interview published Sunday.
"What we are saying to the people is have your children, don't kill them. And if you don't want a girl child, leave her to us," Chowdhury told the agency, adding that the government planned to set up a center in each regional district.
"We will bring up the children. But don't kill them because there really is a crisis situation," she said.
Do American abortion rights advocates base that sense of elevated morality only on the reason given for an abortion? Are they against sex-selection abortions only?
