When it's game time at schools in Missouri, it's time for prayer . . .

“Students in public schools may pray or engage in religious activities or religious expression before, during and after the school day in the same manner and to the same extent that students may engage in nonreligious activities or expression.”

A public school basketball team prays before every home and away game. Last March, they prayed together with the Skyline girls basketball team in the middle of Mizzou Arena at Columbia before the Class 2 state championship game.

Rep. Elijah Haahr, R-Springfield, called House Bill 1303 his “signature bill” of the 2014 session. Some state lawmakers questioned if the bill protected liberties already protected by the Bill of Rights, but the bill passed the House and Senate and was signed into law.

A policy enacted by the Crane R-III Board of Education keeps teachers or coaches from taking part in prayers with students.

The policy is backed by state law. It reads, “To the extent required by law, district employees or officials shall not lead attendees of a district-sponsored event in prayer or any other religious ritual, nor shall they direct, whether implicitly or explicitly, a student to lead attendees in a prayer or any other religious ritual. However, this policy shall not be used to deny any student, employee or district official any personal legal right of expression.”

A political science associate professor at a well-known evangelical college in suburban Chicago is wearing a hijab to class and everywhere else during Advent to show “religious solidarity with Muslims” and to launch a Christian movement with Islam by wearing the mandatory head scarf for oppressed Muslim women.

The professor says as part of the Advent season, she will wear the hijab “to work at Wheaton College, to play in Chi-town, in the airport and on the airplane to my home state… and at church.”

Hawkins notes that she checked first with the Council on American Islamic Relations [CAIR] to make sure it was not offensive in any way for non-Muslim women to wear the hijab and she invites other women to join her effort as a way to express support and unity.

Perhaps you are an atheist or agnostic who finds religion silly or inexplicable. Perhaps you are a Catholic or Protestant Christian like me. Perhaps you already cover your head as part of your religious worship, but not a hijab."

"I asked whether a non-Muslim wearing the hijab was haram (forbidden), patronizing, or otherwise offensive to Muslims. I was assured by my friends at CAIR-Chicago that they welcomed the gesture," she explained. "So please do not fear joining this embodied narrative of actual as opposed to theoretical unity; human solidarity as opposed to mere nationalistic, sentimentality."

Since her controversial Facebook post last Thursday, Hawkins said that at least ten other people, including students, friends and even a mother of one of her former students, have told her that they will be taking part in wearing hijabs this Christmas season. She is not certain if all of them plan on wearing the hijab throughout the entire Advent or just for a day or two.

"I think that is the kind of unity through religious diversity that I am trying to accomplish through this is to have unity with women who are easily targeted because they wear their religion on their head," Hawkins stressed. "I really find it imperative to think about what it means to coexist as religionists. There are Christian missionaries who uphold these models of the faith who are doing the same thing as a way of reaching out to Muslims even as they try to spread the gospel. I am not sure if we see this is a way of sharing the gospel or as an act of religious solidarity. I think people do it all the time, just not in the U.S."

"I think woman wearing a cross or a man wearing a cross isn't necessarily deemed Christian but a woman wearing a hijab is always assumed to be Muslim, even though Jesus' mom wore a hijab. Mary, the mother of God, wore a hijab," Hawkins highlighted. " The context in the time is fortuitous to remind ourself that in some context, this is a cultural element of dress. Some of my friends who are missionaries in the Middle East wear the hijab while they live there everyday."

UPDATE 2/10/16: From "Wheaton College 'Same God' Prof. Says Jesus Is Her Rock on Difficult Journey From Advent to Lent" by Samuel Smith, Christian Post Reporter

. . . Wheaton Provost Stanton Jones recommended last month that the school begin the termination proceedings for Hawkins, who was placed on administrative leave in mid-December after she asserted that Christians and Muslims worship the same God.

On Saturday, it was announced in a press release that the school and Hawkins "found a mutual place of resolution and reconciliation." The statement added that the two sides "reached a confidential agreement under which they will part ways."

Although Hawkins issued a four-page theological statement on the matter days after she was suspended, the institution still felt that more theological discussion was needed before she could return to teach. Hawkins, however, made it clear to the administration that she would no longer have theological dialogue over the matter.

[Wheaton College President Philip] Ryken said reconciliation is not always easy or perfect, but the college and Hawkins are "moving forward in genuine friendship, wishing each other well and wanting to bless each other in our work."

The debate over Hawkins' comments continues to resonate throughout the Wheaton College community. Even as Ryken and Hawkins stood together in Chicago, roughly two dozen students, alumni and religious leaders were gathering outside the school's Edman Chapel to announce the launch of a nationwide fast that calls upon the Wheaton community and other evangelical Christian institutions to "confess and repent of the sins of racism, sexism and Islamophobia, and recognize that all humans have dignity and are created equal in the eyes of God."

As president, Ryken said he is committed to restoring "what is lost and repair what is broken" on campus. To do that, he has asked the college's board of trustees to review ways the college can improve how it addresses faculty and personnel issues in the future, particularly when questions arise that relate to the college's statement of faith. He added that the school stands for religious freedom and against the repression of anyone, including Muslims.

Wheaton College theology professor George Kalantzis said Hawkins provided great spiritual and moral leadership, as well as a safe and inviting learning environment, on a campus that greatly needed it.

Morristown Elementary School basketball coach Scott Spahr agreed to distance himself from praying students after school officials showed him the threatening letter from attorneys of the American Humanist Association (AHA) accompanied by a photograph of Spahr in an apparent prayer circle in the gym.

Scott Spahr was photographed standing at center court holding hands and bowing his head in prayer alongside the Morristown Elementary School girls' basketball team and the opposing team from Waldron Elementary on Dec. 1. Principals from both schools received an e-mail from the American Humanist Association last Friday asserting Spahr's presence was "a constitutional violation." Spahr agreed to stop participating in the prayer circle after being notified of the complaints.

Spahr told ABC News that he was "dumbfounded" by the AHA's reaction. He said his students invited him into the circle and that the AHA misinterpreted the incident.

"That's always been a player-led prayer circle," Spahr said.

"We're talking about 10 and 11 year-old-kids and they're confused about the whole issue," Spahr said.

The letter from AHA was sent last week to Morristown Elementary Principal John Corn and Waldron Elementary Principal Christy Merchant, both in the Shelby Eastern district  — and the two teams that played and prayed that night.

"The coach graciously agreed he would step away," [Shelby Eastern Superintendent Robert] Evans said. Spahr was not disciplined in any way and will continue to coach. "I appreciate Scott not wanting this to be a distraction for (the teams)."

Evans denies there was any acknowledgement of a violation, and Spahr couldn't be reached for comment. But he has been writing about the incident on his Facebook page, where the prayer circle photo is now Spahr's cover photo.

Stefonknee, who then went by her given name Paul, began dating a woman named Maria in high school, and they later married. Maria was surprised by Paul’s love of women’s clothing, but was initially supportive, and even bought him an outfit.

‘The next day, she bought me a black pleated skirt, a white blouse, and a grey camisole… so then I had an ally.’

But while Maria was supportive of her husband’s cross-dressing, she did not accept him as transgender.

. . . Stefonknee has now found acceptance at Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto, where much of the congregation is made up of LGBT members who have formed a special support group just for her.

Ohio Abortionists Dump Babies in Kentucky Landfill

Yesterday, Ohio officials announced results of a five-month investigation finding that all of the Planned Parenthood abortion clinics violate Ohio Administrative Code 3701-47-05 by cooking babies and then sending them to a common landfill.  Abortionist spokespersons responded saying that their handling of "waste tissue" meets the "humane manner" requirements of the law.

The AG’s investigation focused on three facilities: Bedford Heights, Cincinnati and Columbus. DeWine launched the investigation to determine whether the facilities were selling fetal tissue, or abortion trafficking, in violation of Ohio law.

While the investigation did not find that fetal tissue was sold by any of the Planned Parenthood affiliates, the disposal methods used violate Ohio Administrative Code 3701-47-05, adopted in 1975, which requires that a “fetus shall be disposed of in a humane manner,” DeWine said.

According to his findings, all three affiliates sent fetal remains to companies which disposed of the fetuses in landfills.

According to the Attorney General's office, the three Planned Parenthood offices that perform abortions in the state contract with Stericycle, a medical and pharmaceutical waste management company, and [Marietta-based] Accu Medical Waste, a medical waste management disposal company.

Stericycle did not return CNN's calls. And a person answering the phone at Accu Medical Waste hung up on a CNN reporter.

Joe Schmansky, assistant attorney general for charitable law, said investigators found such a ["steam-cooking" pressure chamber] disposal system had been in place since at least January 2014, the earliest date of the records they studied.

"I think it will come as a shock to Ohioans to find out that fetuses are being cooked and then they're being put in a landfill and they're going to be mixed in with yesterday's garbage," DeWine said.

DeWine said his office, in conjunction with the Ohio Department of Health, would likely file court papers by Monday seeking an injunction for Planned Parenthood to dispose of fetal remains humanely. DeWine suggested "humane" disposal methods could include burial or cremation, though he said he didn't want to provide an exact definition.

A Planned Parenthood official defended the way her organization disposes of such remains and said DeWine's allegations were politically motivated.

State investigators found that Planned Parenthood affiliates in Columbus and Cincinnati contracted with Accu-Medical Waste Co., while a Bedford Heights clinic near Cleveland sent fetal remains to Stericyle, Inc. However, Stericyle officials said it was company policy not to accept fetal remains; DeWine said he did not know where those remains went.

Accu-Medical Waste confirmed to investigators that fetal remains and other biological waste are placed in auto-clave devices, which use high temperature and pressure to kill germs and infectious matter. The material is then taken to an unspecified landfill in Kentucky.

[Ohio Right to Life president Mike] Gonidakis said his organization is working with three Republican state lawmakers, Reps. Robert McColley of Napoleon and Kyle Koehler of Springfield, and Sen. Joe Uecker of Miami Township, make improper disposal a first-degree misdemeanor, add more oversight for humane burial and cremation, and require providers to inform women seeking an abortion about how the fetus would be disposed.

The school superintendent of a large Chicago suburb immediately acquiesced to demands by the Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) to ban coaches from participation in student-involved prayer, but the school football team issued a statement of defiance saying prayer would continue and dared the atheists to come and "watch us pray."

Naperville Community Unit School District 203 Superintendent Dan Bridges said Thursday that he will enact a ban on coach-led prayer at all Naperville Central High School and Naperville North High School student athletic events.

The Freedom from Religion Foundation filed a complaint this week after seeing a photo appearing to show Naperville Central High School kneeling in prayer before a Nov. 14 game against Waubonsie Valley High School.

An attorney for the organization replied Thursday in a letter to Bridges that the ban doesn't "go far enough" to assure religious rituals are kept out of district-sponsored or sanctioned events.

ABC7 Eyewitness News received a team statement Friday morning from Daniel Bumpus, a four-year member of the Redhawks football team. He said the players held a team meeting and prepared the following:

"We, as a football team and a family, give Coach Stine our full support. He is the best coach in the state and cares about each and every one of us more than any other coach cares about his players. We are proud that he is willing to stand up for his faith and for the example he sets for us. From "Naperville Central coach told he can't lead players in prayer" by Katlyn Smith, Daily Herald (Chicago suburbs) 12/10/15

Two days after receiving a letter from a group that represents atheists and seeks to defend the separation of church and state, Naperville Unit District 203 officials have told Naperville Central High School head football coach Mike Stine that he cannot lead his players in prayer.

Superintendent Dan Bridges reviewed the complaint and "determined that a voluntary prayer intended as a moment of reflection was offered," according to a statement released Thursday by a district spokeswoman.

"We are aware that a coach-led prayer is not appropriate," the statement read. "The head football coach has been instructed that neither he nor his staff may lead his players in prayer. This message has been communicated to the athletic directors at both high schools to ensure that this expectation is shared with coaches of all sports at all levels."

The Freedom From Religion Foundation was contacted by a local member of the Madison, Wisconsin-based nonprofit organization about Naperville Central personnel . . .

[FFRF] officials filed a complaint this week to a "team prayer" that preceded the Nov. 14 Redhawks football team's game against Waubonsie Valley High School. Naperville Central physical education instructor and team coach Michael Stine either organized or sanctioned the prayer, said Freedom From Religion Foundation attorney Ryan D. Jayne.

. . . Jayne, in a letter of reply Thursday, told Bridges foundation members "appreciate this assurance, but it does not go far enough."

"As explained briefly in our original letter, it is unconstitutional for public school employees to participate in the religious activities of their students," Jayne told Bridges.

Stine did not return a telephone message left Wednesday at his district office. District 203 Board of Education President Terry Fielden did not immediately reply to a telephone request for comment.

The "Walk a Mile in Her Hijab" event Wednesday, hosted by the 10-member organization, was designed to allow non-Muslim female students the opportunity to wear the head covering and gain a better understanding of the Muslim faith. "This event is to hopefully denounce negative stereotypes," [MSA president Yasmeen] Abdallah said.

Six members of the [MSA] group spent the morning placing hijabs on 17 non-Muslim girls who wanted to participate in the project. They also talked about the meaning of the hijab and facets of the Muslim religion to students who approached them.

Teachers and students at the school were encouraged to ask questions about the hijab when they came across a student wearing one.

Abdallah said the event was a good experience, one she hopes will become an annual event.

Florida Bans Prayer at Christian Football Game

Although the Florida District 2A Championship slated Cambridge Christian School of Tampa vs. University Christian from Jacksonville, state officials barred a 30-second prayer from being said from the PA system prior to the matchup at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando. Nonetheless, the teams and fans joined in unamplified prayer to start the game.

“The facility is a public facility, predominantly paid for with public tax dollars, makes the facility ‘off limits’ under federal guidelines and precedent court cases.  In Florida Statutes, the FHSAA (host and coordinator of the event) is legally a ‘State Actor,’ we cannot legally permit or grant permission for such an activity.”

He adds, “If they can pray there, we can pray here, and I want them to be able to pray there and I want us to be able to pray here. So I think his reasoning is flawed at the core of it.”

The fear of lawsuits is making us vanilla clones of each other. Different views, ideas and perspectives should be shunned in favor of a one-size fits-all approach to life, education, opportunity and even sports. That is, unless you fit into one of government’s preferred and approved classes of people who deserve special treatment — of which being a Christian is not one.

Libby says this situation isn't a matter of free speech. She says Lammert is an administrator and therefore should not post things of this nature.

I am writing to take responsibility and apologize for a post that I made on my private Facebook account yesterday. I mistakenly left my setting open to “Public” and in doing so made a post that offended some members of our community and beyond. I deeply regret doing so, take full responsibility, and hope that those I offended will accept my apology.

With true humility, I write to apologize for the offensive statement that I recently posted on Facebook. I did not intend this statement literally when I wrote it–it was an exaggeration–but soon after realized that it was unintentionally hurtful, offensive, and divisive at a time when more than ever we need compassion and understanding.

In short, I did not mean what I said and wish with all my heart that I could take it back. But I need to take responsibility for it nonetheless, because I wrote it. It does not represent who I am or what I believe, but I wrote it. This post is an effort to at least begin to make amends.

Had I simply written what I meant, the post would have reflected my urgent distress at the epidemic of mass violence in our country, which more recent events have proven to span all social groups. Ironically, in my effort to point out that we run the risk of simplifying the problem by singling out a particular ethnic group, I did exactly that to the group to which I belong. It was careless and rash.

Maria Libby, the superintendent of the school system, criticized the Facebook post but defended Lammert's character.

"I think that there are people in the community who are quite upset over the post and may not be happy unless that assistant principal is fired," she said.

Libby said the situation has been handled appropriately but did not provide details on what actions were taken. She said he will not be fired.

Indiana Competes, which includes Eli Lilly and Co., Cummins, AT&T and Anthem among its ranks, plans to hold events around the state in the coming weeks to publicize the issue ahead of the legislative session that begins in January.

[Last April, the] law was changed amid the unrest. But in the aftermath, business groups and other supporters of gay and lesbian rights have pushed for a statewide ban on disicimination in housing, employment and public accommodation based on a person's sexual orientation or gender identity. Religious conservatives, however, object because they believe it could force Christian businesses owners to violate sincerely held religious beliefs.

The Indy Chamber has organized the coalition, using its office space in the Chase Tower. Joining the coalition, called Indiana Competes, is free for businesses, but donations are requested, said Indy Chamber CEO Michael Huber.

Micah Clark, executive director of the American Family Association of Indiana, which has fought past efforts to pass statewide LGBT protections, called the business coalition "an unnecessary politicizing of the workforce."

Ron Johnson, executive director of Indiana Pastors Alliance, also criticized the coalition, saying, "It's really buying into a false narrative … that there is a large population of LGBT workers who are being discriminated against."

"There are Christian … business owners … who are being fined and discriminated against. Those are the people we should be trying to protect," he said.

Senate Republicans recently detailed a plan that would extend civil rights to include people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. Business groups and other supporters, for example, would like to see housing and public accommodations made for those groups.

It would also, however, leave religious or religious-affiliated groups — such as private schools, adoption agencies, social service and charitable service agencies — exempt from abiding by any protections offered. It also would prohibit the state from taking any action against those groups that don't abide by the protections. The state could not evoke tax exemptions, deny tax deductions, withhold grants or contracts, or deny accreditation or licenses, under the plan.

Additionally, the proposal allows small businesses with fewer than four full-time employees to refuse providing marriage-related services or goods on religious grounds, and transgender people would have to prove they'd had at least 12 months of medical care and actively lived as the sex to which they identify before they could use a coinciding restroom or dressing room, or file a complaint to the Indiana Human Rights Commission.

And any person identifying as LGBT who files a "frivolous" complaint to the Indiana Human Rights Commission would be fined $1,000, under the proposal.

Protections that 20 municipalities have carved out for the LGBT community, meanwhile, would be superseded, a point over which the Lake County Council expressed disbelief. That council passed an LGBT protection ordinance in May.

The proposed legislation - Senate Bill 100 - would generally bar discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in housing and employment.

The bill also delves into the issue of bathroom usage in schools and public places by stating it is not discriminatory or unlawful segregation to have restroom and shower policies, as well as dress codes, based on sex, sexual orientation or gender identity.

According to conservative group Advance America, "making gender identity a protected class will give men, including sexual predators (rapists and child molesters), legal access to women’s restrooms throughout Indiana, as well as women’s locker rooms in a fitness facility and other locations like public pools thereby placing women and girls at risk of being harmed!"

UPDATE 2/2/16: From "Indiana gay rights bill is dead: 'We took a beating from all sides'" by The Associated Press & Chicago Tribune wire reports

Indiana Republican lawmakers abandoned efforts to strengthen protections for lesbian, gay and bi-sexual people on Tuesday, opting not to vote on a measure designed to restore the state's reputation following a national boycott over a religious objections law last year.

Efforts to find a balance between the civil rights of the LGBT community and religious liberty had satisfied no one, said Sen. David Long, leader of majority Republicans. He said efforts to pass a gay rights bill were dead for this legislative year.

The measure abandoned by Republicans was faulted by Democrats and LGBT rights activists for not including transgender people and allowing broad religious exemptions. Religious conservatives said it would still require people to provide services for same-sex marriages such as flowers or cakes even if they had religious objections.

Some evangelical Christians welcomed its demise, saying it would have whittled away religious freedom. American Family Association of Indiana director Micah Clark said the bill was a "fatally flawed concept."

The end of the debate marks a huge win for religious conservatives, who have been battling a changing cultural tide on gay rights issues. It also relieves political pressure on Republican Gov. Mike Pence, a born-again Christian who last month questioned the need for such legislation, as he seeks re-election.

Pulling the plug on legislation deals a blow to influential Indiana businesses that pushed for LGBT rights, and to advocacy groups that have, until now, successfully fought to advance the status of LGBT Hoosiers.

It was a swift death for the gay rights proposal, Senate Bill 344, which was carried by Republican leadership in the Senate. Last week, a Senate committee crafted and gave initial approval to the proposal to extend civil rights to gay Hoosiers, but not transgender people, with some exemptions for religious organizations, faith-based groups and small businesses providing wedding services.

Social conservatives and tea party activists who were upset with recent legislative losses on same-sex marriage and the so-called RFRA “fix” had pledged to exact revenge on Republican lawmakers who crossed them again.

NJ Atheist Official's Hissy Fit re: Christmas Tree

Charlene Storey, a Democrat councilwoman in Roselle Park, New Jersey, threw a temper tantrum and spontaneously resigned her post because the majority borough council voted to rename the "Holiday Tree Lighting" ceremony to the "Christmas Tree Lighting."  However, after a brief cooling off period, she rescinded her resignation in trade for the creation of a council diversity committee, which she will lead.

Hokanson said growing up in Roselle Park the event was always called a "Christmas Tree Lighting." Now, in his first year as mayor and master of ceremonies of the event, he wanted to change it back.

He said "Christmas" was removed from the name years ago after a lawsuit over Jersey City's holiday display.

“I’d like to have council’s permission to change it from the Annual Holiday [Tree] Lighting back to the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting if that’s all right with everybody,” stated Mayor Carl Hokanson at last night’s Mayor & Council meeting. He was referring to the popular winter annual event currently known as the Annual Holiday Tree Lighting And Gala which will be held next Friday. He announced his proposal by producing a flier he had included in every council member’s meeting packet which is usually distributed days before a meeting.

Councilwoman-At-Large Charlene Storey immediately commented, “Well, I’ve got to say Mr. Mayor, I have checked that out and every other town in the area calls it a holiday lighting or a tree lighting. I think that this is moving away from inclusiveness to exclusiveness so I cannot support that.”

Mayor Hokanson responded, “Well, again, that’s everybody else. That doesn’t have to be here. I’m just asking if that’s what everybody wants.”

As the meeting progressed, during the Borough Engineer’s report, Councilwoman Storey left the dais. Almost five minutes later, the Council President returned momentarily to pick up her coat and belongings then left the meeting for good without saying a word to anyone. Later on, Mayor Hokanson appointed Councilman Kelly – the longest sitting member of council – as the acting Council President.

But to change it from a neutral term back to a religious one was clearly meant to put religion back into the public event. And to underscore religious division at this time in the nation and world is, to me, as wrong as wrong can be.

. . . All four members of the Council who voted for this are male, white, Catholic and members of the Knights of Columbus, a religious organization that every year posts a large sign urging, “Keep Christ in Christmas.” So I find it hard to accept that to them, a “Christmas” tree is a secular tree.

. . . I am a non-Christian and a non-believer. My husband and I are Humanists, as I’ve pointed out in campaign literature and in my bio on the Borough’s website. We believe it’s our duty to do good in this life as a matter of principle, not as a religious obligation.
